Abu Mohammed Abubakar bin Mohammad al-Sheikawi also known as Abubakar Shekau was the famous leader of the Boko Haram group. He served as deputy leader to the group's founder, Mohammed Yusuf, until Yusuf was executed in 2009.

Shekau was known for his brutal executions that he publicized, his use of women and children as suicide bombers, and his wholesale kidnapping: he orchestrated the kidnapping of the Chibok schoolgirls.
