Ashley:

What's up? Y'all it's me. Ashley.

Aaron:

What's up? It's Aaron. Howdy.

Garret:

I'm Garrett.

Ashley:

And you're listening to nostalgic. How you living?

you living? What

Ashley:

everybody here is equally kind.

Aaron:

We practiced that many times. I hope it turned out

Ashley:

All right. So if it's not obvious, we were talking about in living color but before that

Aaron:

first. I'd just like to thank everybody for the comments, the likes, the shares, because they're awesome.

Ashley:

Told you we'd grow on you. Boom.

Garret:

Yes.

Aaron:

all right. So there's no really notable deaths or birthdays, That's a good thing. Cause some of these have been really sad to be honest with you.

Ashley:

Yay. No deaths. Woo.

Garret:

it'd be nice to have a birthday, but like I'm glad about there's no,

Aaron:

Yeah. That was a couple birthdays, but nothing that jumped out.

Ashley:

it wasn't noteworthy, so, oh, there's that?

Aaron:

Happy birthday, but not happy enough to where we're gonna mention. You're not important enough for Nosalgic we're cruel

Ashley:

maybe next year.

Aaron:

Yep. we do have some nostalgic news though. what you got Ash.

Ashley:

So in my news, you can rent out the mystery machine. We just did did cartoons and Scooby do was a big portion of it. I think Garrett, you said was one of our most shared posts. it's for the 20th anniversary. the stop animation was in 2002. So it's been out for 20 years Matthew lard is the one that's renting it out. And I'm Airco that because I don't know if if that's a publicity stunt It's parked on a beach in Southern California for$20 a night. for only three nights and they put it up like, okay, on June 14th, we're putting it out. And whoever books, books, but I just thought that was pretty cool.$20 a night though, it was$20 a night.

Garret:

I would expect it to be going

Ashley:

for more. And it was only, June 24th, 25th and 26th, Two guests. So you and another person would stay

Aaron:

if you rented it, what would you have to do?

Ashley:

a donut I don't think you can drive it

Aaron:

would you quote movies? Would you smoke a bong and have it all smokey, like shaggy and then

Garret:

I think it would wear off quite quickly. maybe that's why it's 20 bucks. Or maybe it's a crossover with screen.

Ashley:

Oh, no. And the other thing I had was in an auction house in Dallas. They were doing, an auction that was specifically old VHS movies. And, Tom Wilson who played Biff in, back to the future, sold a near mint condition, VHS of back to the future for$75,000. the, the whole auction for the day made 580,000 selling all BHS Goonies jaws, and Ghostbusters were some of the other notable ones that they sold. wow.

Aaron:

I actually had the original star wars trilogy still sealed and I opened it to watch it.

When did you open it?

Aaron:

Probably four or five years ago,

Ashley:

you can't even say you're a kid. You're like, I was 35,

Aaron:

know, and if it's worth money, I don't ever want to know.

Ashley:

Yeah, I don't even wanna look that up.

Aaron:

so some, interesting nostalgic news that I had was it is reported that Johnny Depp could be returning to act in beetle Jews, two

Ashley:

He is UN cancelled.

Garret:

I know he lost some roles, I guess I didn't see him as canceled,

Ashley:

but He was deem a wife beater. So until the trial started, I think even right before that, he was being shunned a little bit. He obviously had supporters. I mean, he is Johnny Depp, but

Aaron:

Well, isn't that what the whole, trial was about was because he lost those roles.

Garret:

well was the defamation suit, but that's yeah, because she was saying all the things about him that weren't

Aaron:

true. Yeah.

Ashley:

Yeah. So cool.

Aaron:

Mm-hmm so we've all seen the new season of stranger things spoiler alert. Kate Bush, which had a, huge song in the eighties running up that hill is a big part of the series.

Ashley:

It's on the previews though. so it's not that much at

Aaron:

this point. Okay. she wrote, produced and owns 100% of the songwriting publishing and licensing rights of that song. And since the series came out she's earning around a million dollars a week. From that song. What?

Ashley:

Can you imagine, this song came out in, was it? 86, 85, 85. She's been sitting on it, now all of a sudden she's making a million dollars a week from her.

Garret:

I think she was pretty successful though. I think she was indie before there was Indy

Ashley:

I would definitely say that. I was listening to Spotify recently and I was listening to a Heim channel or something, which you know, I do the thing where it's like, listen to the artist radio and this song came up and I literally thought it was a new band, I was think it was like a Betty who you know, just bringing that sound back. Gotcha. Right. Cause that's what it sounds like. So then when it was on the show, I was like, oh my God, this is that song.

Aaron:

Can you imagine, since 1985 She probably gets a royalty check every now and then for, a decent amount from plays. Yeah. And then this series comes out she gets a check in and like, ah, just throw it in with the rest of them. And then she opens up and

Garret:

she's like, I want two slices of cheese on my Whopper. But like, If you remember those eighties, drug commercials where they were like,

Ashley:

this is your brain on jugs.

Garret:

Yes. There was one before that, and it was this girl, she was in the alleyway and it just shows this person who's obviously at their very lowest and it's like, don't give up and it's like,

oh geez,,

Ashley:

we're definitely gonna link it in the show notes. Now we know that.

Aaron:

those drug commercials were awesome.

Garret:

They were,

Aaron:

I always think of the one it's like, where did you learn this from? He's like, I learned it from U. Okay. I say that all the,

Ashley:

also commercials keep coming up So we will do the commercials,

Aaron:

Yes. Episode

Ashley:

mark it down. All right. Now can I say we're doing a living color?

Aaron:

I mean it's your world,

Ashley:

Yeah, I make the rules. I'll your word?

Garret:

in living color. One of my favorites. this series, was groundbreaking It was new. The cast, wasn't known very well, a lot of fresh players it aired from April 15th, 1990 to May 19th 94. the creator was Keenan ivory, Waynes of the Wayne's family. And if you don't know, the Wayne's family has 10, siblings. There's a ton of these guys. that family was busy. but we got so many creative artists they're all in each other's productions, which is awesome. how it got started was he did two movies, Hollywood shuffle, and I'm gonna get you suck up. after these movies were successful, he had a lot of film studios lining up to say,

Hey, let's do business together,

Garret:

And Fox network, showed up But if you remember Fox studios was like a startup around

this time,

Garret:

they were not a known broadcast company. So they were trying to get their foot in the door and get people to watch them, they were creating series, like married with children. And, series that were a little bit more rough around the edges, the Simpsons, I think the Traci Alman show might have been on there as well So, they went to him and he was like, I'm doing film. I don't really see myself doing TV. And they're like whatever you want to do, we will let you do it. And he was like, when somebody comes at you and they're like, you can do whatever you want. He took that as an opportunity to, do what he wanted. Ken and everyone's love SNL, but he was thinking of doing something that was shorter skits, more, character oriented, and doing it from the, viewpoint of minorities and giving them more of a voice there hadn't been a television show that was a sketch comedy that was African American or, any other race, but white. it was an introduction for everybody into a different world and viewpoint than everyone was used to.

Aaron:

before this, it was mainly like Saturday night live Which usually did politics or commercials. But like you said, not normally, topics that like the African American or minority community would do,

Garret:

Right. The advertiser show is a contemporary comedy variety show. he got with his family, he got with David Waynes he had a sister come in. Kim Waynes, There was Marlin, there was Sean Waynes that came in and he was a DJ there for a little bit, all called S SW one.

Aaron:

what's funny too, is they make fun of having their family on the show, They're like, damn, she got more kids than miss Waynes just stuff like that. So look out for that

Garret:

yeah. So, when they filmed the pilot, the executives were shaking because they thought it was too edgy. They thought they would offend the African American community and they just weren't sure what to do with it. So it sat for six months. then, this producer that was working on Garth answer, a N C I E R if I'm saying that. Right. he ended up taking this tape and showing it to, a media outlet and they loved it. They were like, why isn't this on the air? he faxed the response to the executives and it was green lit like that.

Ashley:

One of the things I did read. And maybe you can confirm or deny is at one point they had moved where they were against the super bowl and they gave them a run for their money on views. Like people were watch.

Garret:

yes, that's true

Ashley:

Millions of viewers were watching super bowl. And they were like, oh, we can't contend with that. But people actually tuned into a living color too.

Garret:

the first episode that was watched was on Sunday, April 15th, 1990, following an episode of married with children. The first episode was watched by 22.7 million people making it the 29th most viewed show of the week.

Ashley:

Nice.

Garret:

It started off strong, especially for what it was, promoting

Ashley:

The representation for sure.

Garret:

mm-hmm Yeah. the Miami Herald had said the show was smart and Saucey and it's self-aware it just had a lot of good reviews, for its cutting edge is the majority of what people were saying. And I think for myself, there was 2 27, that was African American, there was Cosby. but they were more like wholesome shows. but this, was making fun and putting a different perspective on stereotypes, on normal day things that people, I guess, wouldn't show and they were putting it in your face.

Ashley:

Yeah. It's always weird when you're a kid, the things you remember, I'm like, oh my gosh, I didn't really get any of this stuff I just remember like funny outlandish characters, but I didn't get a lot of the jokes, also, the episodes are like so short. they're really are only four to five skids in each one. for some reason in my mind, they just lasted forever.,

Aaron:

The first couple, the fly girls in the dancing part lasts like six minutes into the episode

Ashley:

and they introduce the fly girls every time,

Aaron:

So the theme song, heavy D and the boys did the, theme song all five seasons season one and two were the one that we probably all remember the third and the fourth season And that was the one that was like, how you living? What,

Ashley:

you live?

I loved those intros.

Garret:

Cuz now they don't really do intros to anything anymore. You get a, a very short one. But those were just fun. and created

Ashley:

I thought so too. And I thought it was pretty advanced each one was really tied together well and catchy and I mean, we were all singing it before we even rewatched

Aaron:

Right something that I saw was for the first few episodes, they used an exotic looking logo for their show. But they had to change it because there's band called living color that claimed that they stole the logo from them and they threatened to Sue'em. Yeah, But I think they still got away with using the name because of in living and they spelled color differently. Oh, The band spelled it C O L O U R.

Ashley:

did they sing anything notable?

Aaron:

I could not tell you one song. They saw

Garret:

they got the name though, from way back in the day, when, color was brand new, they would say now in living color, you know, came. I didn't came from

Ashley:

like live and in color

Garret:

Yeah. Mm-hmm

Ashley:

So fun facts on the fly girls This is a big part of the show. you're gonna see'em you're gonna see'em in between skits there's outfit changes. One of the cool facts is that Rosie Perez choreographed the fly girls We all know her from white men. Can't jump. And most recently the flight attendant,

Garret:

I didn't know. She was a trained

Ashley:

dancer. I didn't either. I watched an interview with her and I was like, wait a minute.

Aaron:

speaking of white men can jump you know, they're redoing that movie. Jack Harlow

Ashley:

who's Jack Harlow?

Aaron:

You don't know who

Jack

Aaron:

Harlow is. he's actually a local, Louisville rapper but he's blown up. that's who we just went and saw at Forecastle

Ashley:

does he have curly hair? Yes. I've seen him on a couple shows. I didn't realize that was him. He was on SNL. Not that long ago. I thought he was good in the show. okay. I didn't know any of his music,

Aaron:

but yeah. He's gonna be Woody her's character in white man,

Ashley:

and that is extra nostalgic news. I do wanna give an honor over mention to, a woman named Deidra Lang because she danced in all five seasons. from episode one she was there the whole time. Other than that, they switched out,

Aaron:

You go Deidra.

Garret:

Yeah. That's awesome.

Ashley:

Good for her some of the more famous ones. There's one Lorianne Gibson who danced in season five. she's a famous choreographer who works with P Diddy. especially On the show making the band, but she's choreographed. Missy Elliot, Katie Perry, lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Britney Beyonce.

Garret:

awesome. If that launched her career.

Ashley:

And she's also a judge on, so you think you can dance? So the next one is, I should have done what Erin didn't listen to the name, but Carrie Ann and NABA and NABA, she danced on season one through three. she won a talent show in Hawaii for dancing at 18. And then she lived in Japan and released three records as a teen pop star. her next big gig was performing with Madonna mainly as the pole girl on the girly show tour. for this tour, Carrie Ann had to shaver head and also train with circus trainers in a stripper.

Aaron:

I've been to a Madon concert and the poll work at those concerts is it's something I've never seen anything like it before crush

Ashley:

she later went on to dance with one of, Garrett's favorites, Ricky Martin,

Aaron:

the

Ashley:

also if you watched, Austin power's gold member and you remember Fu you and Fu me she was one of those,

Aaron:

And the horse she wrote in on

Ashley:

And then, she was on dancing with the star. I don't, watch it. So I don't know if she's still on there, and the last one is the most notable of course, which is JLo, who did season three and four. Who? Jenny from the block. so one thing about JLo in the book homey don't play that there was, a writer who wrote it, who wasn't on the show, but he interviewed a lot. And he said that there was some tension between JLo and keen and ivory or something. I didn't read the book. I don't know what it is, but they mentioned that there might have been some tension there,

Aaron:

if she did have, tension with any of the Waynes, then she had a big problem. Cuz she had tension with all of them.

Ashley:

he's obviously the one that's running the show. but I don't know what it was. I should have looked more into it, but I don't wanna get too far. right. So she's now judge on. So you think you can dance. She was a backup dancer for Janet Jackson. She's done movies. Like Selena and Aconda of my favorite was the cell, which I hope we end up doing one on because it's amazing. and she is a half of the famous bene the Rebe because

Aaron:

yeah, I was gonna say bene yeah. How many times has she been married now I dunno. Um,

Garret:

305. No.

Ashley:

And only, you know, one kid, two kid. No, I think she's got two. I was just hearing something recently about her, her having her kids sing a song with her. It's been on the news. they

Aaron:

sang the in living color theme song. I saw that. What

Ashley:

did they really?

Aaron:

I was bullshit.

Garret:

oh,

Ashley:

I'm so gullable

I know we were both like really?

Aaron:

So

Ashley:

that is famous fly girls. Those are the ones that have made a splash afterwards. Mostly cor choreograph. Yeah, choreographers choreography.

Aaron:

I really was sitting there watching your brain work Like I was like,

Ashley:

choreographer

I saw

Ashley:

you know how you have the word that's like, it does that limit limit every day.

Aaron:

So in the first season,, the show started with the fly girls dancing, S w one was kicking some beats. And I think the first episode, literally was six minutes into it and they dance through different sets then they all go to a door and open it up and introduce Ken and ivory Waynes. so after the first season they started bringing musical guests in kind of like Saturday night live. But most of them were, hip hop artists or, popular artists at the time. the first musical guest was queen Latifa. She was actually the only one that was on there twice. She was the very first guest and came back in the third season. they had some big names at the time. Of course, heavy D was on there. He did the theme song. Chris Kros in Vogue, easy E the far side Rex in effect red man, naughty by nature Jodeci. Public enemy and arrested development just to NA oh, oh my gosh. Tupac. How could I Yeah, that was the one I really wanted to say first, but, then they had third base was on there. I don't know if y'all remember third base, pop goes to, we, it goes, we, it goes pop

Ashley:

I totally got caught up in a recipe bowl. I wanna be like Tennessee, Tennessee, That's such a good song.

Aaron:

We'll play some horseshoe So we'll start going through some of the actors on the show, where you may know them from where they're at now and some of our favorite skits, characters they played. some of'em I remember well, but I, look and they were only on there one time. as I'm looking through here and it says one episode, I'm like, man, I remember that from, 20, 30 years ago now. So, The first character I'm gonna talk about is Ken and Iry Waynes. Obviously he was the host of the show. He was the one that the fly girls introduced. he had a big hand in producing the show and directing the show. Garrett went over how he got started. Yeah. So before he even started with Eddie Murphy and I'm gonna get you sucker, he actually had some small rows and like cheers chips, hill street blues. He was heavily influenced by Richard Pryor. and Then after him living color, don't be a menace to south central on the hood. Yeah. Uh scary movies, one of my favorites, white chicks, one of the things that I thought was funny was, he was canceled from Fox, for making fun of everybody and then, later on made millions of dollars making these movies that made fun of all the same stuff, Yeah. Right. And some of his most famous characters, that I really liked, he was the father on the Butman.

Mm-hmm

Ashley:

Buttons. It

Aaron:

I don't know really how you describe the Butman.

Ashley:

It sounds ridiculous. Let's just say

Garret:

that it

Aaron:

does.

Ashley:

There's people with butts on their head.

Aaron:

butts are always funny. And then when you put Butman Ashley and I, I have the last name, butter words. So it's like,

Ashley:

oh yeah. It's a lot of butt jokes there. A lot of butt jokes, especially if you were like signing one of those things that only the first four letters of your last name was there. It was always like a butt I'm like, great. That's not gonna stick

Aaron:

So when we get our Aldi pickups print this big logo and put it on all your bags and they only put the first four letters. So our just has butt all over everything.

Garret:

my God

Aaron:

every time I pick up I'm laughing, the people delivering the bags, don't think it's very funny, but I'm like, you gotta think it's funny when you get an order for, but yes,

Ashley:

also, when we were talking about getting the adult humor, this came out in 1990 and I was seven. buts were freaking hilarious at seven

Aaron:

and just the way they, like, man, my, pants have a hole in them and so they would look down in them and then the butt would be like in the hole, just the way that they incorporated it in there. Yeah. one of my, favorite character that he probably played was Frenchie. it was almost like a Rick James

Yes. greasy soul glow hair.

Garret:

Oh, I saw the one where he goes to the AA meeting.

Aaron:

So something that I saw was funny. this character originated from a night out with Eddie Murphy and Rick James. No. Yes. um, cocaine is a hell of a truck

Ashley:

I think I know the night it was on the Chappelle show. Charlie

Aaron:

Murphy so they were out and I guess, Eddie Murphy and Rick James were off doing something and it's called cocaine. Probably. So they left him alone in Rick James's dressing room. So keen and ivory Waynes thought it would be funny they said he put on a red leather outfit and a wig. when they came back, they thought it was so funny. So they took him out, on a night on the town.

Ashley:

I have to admit, like, when I saw the leather outfit, it reminded me of Eddie Murphy and his beginning of comedy where he always used to wear the magic. Oh yeah. You're right outfits.

Garret:

I didn't even equate that.

Aaron:

Okay. Yeah. And they said the night ended with Rick James inviting Keenan to join him, to go out with him, dressed like that. He was pretending to be Eddie Murphy's cousin from Augusta, Georgia all night is what it

Garret:

Pretty amazing. That's funny.

Aaron:

I love that. And so some of the other characters, he did, some impressions of Arsenio hall. Rick James Jesse Jackson.

I loved our city hall

Garret:

Like that was when he was like the, and he had the big old butt. I was like, apparently our like he hated it.

Aaron:

Yeah, I probably would. If, and you guys might remember his impression of, Mike Tyson? Yes.

Ashley:

Well, because I've been rewatching the episodes and he shows up in most of them now. it was such a big hit that he kept doing it, you know? Yeah.

Aaron:

he also did Don Cornelius little Richard. And then another one that I thought was pretty funny was, the homeboy shopping network where it, yeah, but he was Iceman. I still remember. it was like mow money, mow money, mow money. I don't know if y'all remember that it

Ashley:

Oh, I love it. they had the payphone, They were like, stop it as a standing by and they go over the payphone and at one point they pull out a satellite dish

Aaron:

a

Garret:

I never got it. Cuz I was like, I don't understand why this is so funny. it wasn't until I was an adult and I was watching it recently and I was like, oh, it's cuz they stole it.

Aaron:

Yeah, this is all criminal

Ashley:

And it's the home shopping network

Garret:

But as a kid, I just didn't get it

Ashley:

Yeah. You're like, why are they selling all this crap?

Aaron:

Yeah. And the, the last one I saw was how to get more money without spending your money. and it was kinda funny. They were like trying to set scam the government it's good. so that's, keen and ivory Wayne's in a nutshell. But I saw on here that he actually quit after the four season, no, during the four season, because Fox showed episodes from the previous season without his permission. And he was so furious that he hid a tape of fully edited episodes above the ceiling, in the pounds of his office. So nobody from the network could find them ding. Yep. they said he eventually gave him the tape and he left along with some of the other cast members. But we'll talk about them after a while.

Ashley:

All right, who's next?

Garret:

who's next?

Ashley:

Oh, wait a minute. Hold on. You didn't talk about Wanda. Was that keen and Iry is that, oh no. That's

Garret:

Oh my God girl. Beat yourself.

Aaron:

Sorry was really loud. No, I'm a Rocky

Ashley:

I was like sitting there waiting

Garret:

I kinda saw you. And I was like, what is

Ashley:

she? Yeah, well you kept going like, oh, in this character. And I'm like, eh, but now I know it's Jamie.

Garret:

And on that, So I loved Kim Waynes. I thought she was just absolutely fantastic on the show. but I've always been attracted to like strong female personas, And she's definitely one of them, especially on that show, she was just

Ashley:

Kim Colson might have some other things to say about that. I'm just saying you wait till I get to her.

Garret:

oh, okay. Well, I mean, they were all strong, but like she had this confidence she's like six foot tall she's gorgeous. and her comedy is so raw, but funny. And it's a combination of what do they call that? is it slapstick where it's like physical humor? Yeah.

Ashley:

I'd say slapstick. Yeah.

Garret:

I mean the way she emos everything, she's hysterical. I was watching this Oprah thing, and they were interviewing them years later, but, they were saying that Kim was the start of wanting to be in show business. Like she would dress up in her own outfits that she created and she would do her own skits, she kind of was wanting to be in Hollywood before any of them really did anything, but she was in Hollywood shuffle And I'm gonna get you sucker, cuz her brother was the one producing it and then she was in Eddie Murphy raw. but she was just an interviewed fan. So I don't know if she was actually a fan or if she was acting

Aaron:

well, Keenan had some writing in that. So I'd say that was probably a scripted character.

Garret:

Oh, okay. I didn't know that. and so those were the ones before she got into a living color. she was on a different world as a, girl named Allison, but she was only on for one season. and then she was on, do you guys remember the TV show? dream on it was on HBO. She was a guest star on that show. Then after that, she was on a living color and she was on the main cast for season one until season four. Some other things you may know her from. She was in the house and she played Tanya Riley Harris. She was the main cast on season two to four. she's been in a few things, but not anything crazy. I saw her net worth was 8 million and I was like, okay. I was like, oh, I thought it would be higher. but I was like, whatever, it's still pretty good. yeah, yeah, still good.

Ashley:

I mean, it's no Kate Bush, but you know,

Garret:

you know, I'll take, yeah, no kidding. she's rolling around in money. so some of my favorite skits that, Kim did is the snacking shack. So Old school diner, like what you would find in like a small town. And it's old ladies in their old school, uniforms. And she's the one that serves everybody and she'd be like, come here, baby. You know what you want? Because

Aaron:

Tommy Lee Davidson the cook and he would throw stuff up. Yes. And bring the bell.

Yeah. But it, it would always be wrong.

Garret:

So they would say like, it's chill and who he'd be like, chill, pick it out. Yeah. Chill.

Aaron:

Bring the bell. I do remember. Or he'd

Garret:

be like, or he they'd say greens and he'd be like, beads, pick it up. He'd like, he didn't say beads. He said greens. He's like pick it up. Um,

Ashley:

yeah. And I feel like they were ordering and she would be like, no, no, that's not what you want, baby. You want this? I can't remember who was in it, but she was real sweet on the guy.

Garret:

oh, That was Jim Carey. And Kelly Cofield. which were the only white characters so she was serving them and she would reach on her bra and she'd be like, you want some pecan pie baby? or one of the old ladies would be soaking their feet in the water after she served them water glasses out of there, they would see it. it was like one thing after another. like, the lady would complain and they'd be like, there's something on my fork. Can I get new one? She'd be like, oh baby. That's just the dry cabbage.

Aaron:

And she would like rub it on her tongue and rub it away

Garret:

so it was just her being this old woman serving her guests, like she would her family. And it was just humorous.

Ashley:

yeah, I thought it was funny cuz Everything makes said she did not do, but it was still in such a sweet way it reminds you of your grandma,

Garret:

correct.

Ashley:

And you know, that came from somebody in their family,

Garret:

Oh, God had to have one of my all time favorites though, was Bonita Patrell.

Aaron:

Oh, for sure.

Garret:

She was the one. She had her rollers in, she had a Rob on and she'd usually be outside her window And like, the camera would be honest. and she would talk to you. She would break the fourth wall and then she would tell you what was going on. her biggest thing is she would be like, Hey, and she'd say hi to her neighbors. And then she'd talk to you and be like, yeah, that's so and so, and this is what they're all about,

Aaron:

but you ain't hear that from me. Yes. But you ain't hear that from me.

Garret:

So she would gossip, but just say, I ain't one to gossip. The reoccurring sketch was Ms. Jenkins. She would look at you and be like, oh, who are you here to see? And then she would like, Ms. Jenkins. Why would you tell me you're here to see Ms. Jenkins? she's like, that's a fine woman, a fine woman. And then she would gossip about her and be like, just don't let her take a wig off. She was just so funny and she actually reprised that role. some 20 odd years later in 2020 to encourage people to vote, which I thought was really cool. so she did that one, definitely a favorite. Mr. And Mrs. Brooks, The old couple

Ashley:

Hey, Mr.

Garret:

Brooks. so Ashley and I would always say we stayed together even though we'd never dated or anything, but we've been friends for so long.

Ashley:

they're like a married couple.

Aaron:

You guys were.

Garret:

So it was her and, David Allen Greer and they were a married couple and they would act all friendly and lovey dovey to each other when their grandchildren or whoever was in the room. But as soon as they left, they would like, be like, oh Mr. Brooks, can you go get me a, bandaid out of the pantry and he'd go get the bandaid. And then as soon as he closes the door and acts would fall, or some sort of trap would spring, cuz we're trying to kill each other.

Aaron:

Yeah. I, do remember that now.

Garret:

there was boob traps all over the place and then they would just talk shit to each other the entire time

Ashley:

and at the end it was like, but we still together

Garret:

So good. She did Traci Chapman. I don't know if she, she did it once or twice.

Ashley:

on the one I was watching recently. She's like sitting in the window sill and just talking about things that are going on outside,

Garret:

yeah. Cuz she's like I'm Tracy Chapman in a red fast song. So she would like, look and see what's going on. you know, kids today don't respect their elders. And then there's like a wife and husband trying to murder each other and she's like singing about it. it was pretty good. And then, one of her most famous ones was Oprah she did get a little flack for it. So on Oprah she's constantly

Ashley:

eating

Garret:

Yes. and she's always telling the men to like shut up. She's always on the women's side she's like girlfriend, what's your problem. And she would sit next to'em and eventually like the girl up and put her on her lap and She's like rocking her and then she would tell her own story and you're like, oh, I know what your problem is. Cuz Tedman won't propose to me. And she would start eating just making fun of like Oprah being fat. And I don't know this for fact, but apparently Oprah took offense to this I wanna say she brought it up at one point, but, I don't know if that's true or not cuz I was doing so much research. I was like, I can let this slide, but eventually in that, skit, she eats so much food. And she gets so big that she blows up. Oh

Aaron:

I remember that one

Garret:

so, those are some of the funniest skits and her humor is just so spot on and She's hysterical.

Ashley:

So I am gonna talk about my first one is Sean Waynes. Like you said, he's DJ S one., he becomes part of the cast, in season two. So, they have little skits with him in the beginning like one time he, locks Keenan ivory in the, door, so He can't come out and then he's out there talking while he's locked in then one Ken Ivy Comes out and he's like, Hey, is that my shirt? And he takes his shirt off and he gives him a shirt. And then I think Damon comes out and is like, Hey man, are those my shoes? So he ends up DJing in just his pants. So Sean had these little skits, but he wasn't actually introduce his part of the cast until season two.

Aaron:

Side note. Was it DJ twist that took over for him I'm pretty sure it was

Ashley:

I think so. yeah. So stuff that you're gonna know him from, white chicks, I loved white chicks. It's one of those that everybody's like, oh, it doesn't really look like them. So what, it's still funny, use your imagination a little bit. It's yeah. So, like we were talking about earlier, Ken and ivory did scary movie, the whole franchise, Okay. well,

Aaron:

he had the first, the first couple. Yeah, first

Ashley:

two. Oh, okay. So the, yeah, scary move in one and two, he played Ray who was the, the gay football player.

Aaron:

but he was a gay, but he was,

Ashley:

Yeah.

Aaron:

So don't mean to cut you off. Do you remember the Wayne's brother show where Marlon and Sean had a show? So I have

Ashley:

that from 95 to 99. I never watched it though.

Aaron:

Oh, it was hilarious. It had pops from Friday. He was their dad. Oh yeah. And ice Cube's mom was on the show also they ran like a newspaper stand and a little diner. I think it was on WB, And it was the same thing. Their jokes pushed the limit on what you would think, like they were talking about Kuta Cola you know, and then they were like, I cut my foot off from one of these, just some of the jokes that they made were pushing the edge, yeah.

Ashley:

I mean they learned it In living college. That was the boundary. so besides those two, you're pretty much gonna see a lot of their IMDBs are, I'm gonna get you sucker. they ended up in scary movie. Don't be a menace

Aaron:

he goes ashtray and, don't be a Menez. I had that tape. I watched it so many times the tape wore out. you wouldn't hate watching it with me because I've been telling you the joke before it even happens.

Ashley:

lock me up, throw away the key

Aaron:

yeah. I can't even say the part that comes after that, I just, I love all the hood movies, you know, all the movies that it makes fun of. It's one of my all time favorites. all the S were in, except for Damon, I think,

Garret:

he was a big movie star though at that time.

Aaron:

yeah, he was above that. He was doing the last boy scout and, Bulletproof. Well, I think that came later, But keen and I was the postman he would pop up and we go message, Yeah. Uh,

Ashley:

few other things you might have seen Sean in was he, was Dominic and hanging with Mr. Cooper, which was one that was around for a while.

Aaron:

I remember the show. I don't remember him though.

yeah, I don't, I don't remember him either.

Ashley:

yeah, I watched it on and off. I don't remember a lot except for Mr. Cooper he also was on MacGyver for a little bit. He played robo I really don't have much more on him, except for that. He currently is touring like a comedy tour. Actually, most of the ones I, looked up are, but it's not anywhere else outta California.

Aaron:

just making the loop

Ashley:

Yep. If you wanna see him yeah, that's really all I had about Sean

Aaron:

so did he have any, I don't remember him having any main characters on the show.

Ashley:

no. I'm like, why don't I have any characters for him,

Garret:

I think because, like in Saturday live, you have your main cast and then you have your reoccurring cast and I believe he was just a reoccurring cast for either all or most of it.

Aaron:

Makes sense. so my next character is Jim Carey, which was James Carey on the show. he was on the show for all five seasons. he actually got started there from Damon weighs, Damon wins and, he or him, or however you wanna say it, they did work on some stand up previously. So when Damon got on the show, he went to Keenan and was like, you have to bring this guy on. Jim Carey actually auditioned for Saturday night live, but lost the role to Charles rocket, Which was the villain on dumb and dumber. The guy that actually is holding the husband hostage. I don't remember him being on Saturday night live, but that's what, my notes say.

Ashley:

So we all remember Jim Carey

Aaron:

exactly

Ashley:

Big mistake, huge

Aaron:

And so you'll remember Jim Carey before He really hadn't done much. He did a,, movie called rubber face, which never really took off, but, he credits Keenan forgiving him, his start on TV and in the movies. the first couple seasons Jim Carey was in every skit in one way or another. they rode him hard, man. This isn't a Jim Carey episode, but just a few things he actually auditioned for the role of farmer Ted in 16 candles. Oh yeah. he was considered for the main role in Edward scissors hands at one time.

Garret:

Oh my

Ashley:

God. Yeah. Okay. But side note, the guy who played farmer Ted was in Edward scissor hands too, as the boyfriend.

Aaron:

Ah, oh, actually it says that yeah. Hall played the villain.

Ashley:

Yes.

Aaron:

Okay. So I get this. He originally was cast as Dr. Evil in Austin Powers. No, but he turned down the role for liar

Ashley:

liar. Okay. Liar. Liar was good though.

it's kind of an iconic movie

Aaron:

imagine these movies though.. Okay. So he was first considered for the role of captain Jack Sparrow in pirate to the Caribbean.

that would've been a completely different movie.

Aaron:

and Charlie and the chocolate factory. Both given to Johnny Depp. Yep.

Garret:

I will say, I probably would've preferred him in Charlie and chocolate factory. I did not like the remake.

Ashley:

Well, after gene Wilder too, I mean, right.

Garret:

who wants to follow that?

Aaron:

Yeah. J just a few more. He was considered for the, voice of buzz light year and toy story, but Pixar's couldn't afford him.

Ashley:

Oh, Tim Allens of second.

Aaron:

He was originally cast to play the lead in elf

Ashley:

Huh? That movie, has a cult following.

Garret:

El would've been good for him.

Aaron:

I'm just trying to think of these movies if you think of Carrie

Ashley:

I know, I think that's why we're so quiet. trying to imagine

Garret:

I'm envisioning it. Yes,

Aaron:

and that's what I did when I saw these also I'm like, wow he was considered for the role in shaggy, in the first Scooby do the live action. instead of one that we talked about earlier,

Garret:

That would've been too much.

Aaron:

so After, in living color. His career absolutely blew up. we all know, ACE, Ventura, dumb and dumber. liar, liar, the mask. he's currently playing Dr. Robotnik in Sonic one and two. Jim Carey was the first actor to get paid over 20 million for a movie.

Ashley:

Wow. Wow. Mm-hmm

Aaron:

which movie? cable guy in 1996. And

Ashley:

that one wasn't

Aaron:

even one of his best moments. I know. Oh, it move was terrible. Wow. and the first actress to get paid over 20 million was Julia Roberts, for Aaron Brockovich. but it took her four years after get a girl.

Garret:

Yep. You go girl, great movie.

Aaron:

I watched an interview with, Jim Kerry about in living color and he said he pitched the butt talk. That's in ACE Ventura to Keenan ire Waynes about a skit on the show. And it said that Keenan hated it so much as they almost actually got into a fight over it because he said it was so bad. and one thing that I read was that Jim Carey proposed a, make a death wish foundation like make a wish foundation. About a kid whose post humus wish was to go to an amusement park. They turned it down, but they made a design for the kid that was gonna have the death wish. Which end up turning into fire marshal Bill's costume. so speaking of fire, marshal bill, that was probably his most famous characters on there. Fire marshal, bill burns. I'm sure you guys remember him.

oh God. Yeah.

Aaron:

He was the guy that came in to a situation and was supposed to be giving pretty much a safety lesson and it turned into a disaster every time. and he also played, VE Delo. Oh, I love

Ashley:

Vera de I wish I had a sound effect for that. I did not think it was

Garret:

funny story about Vera Delo. So in high school, I almost went as Vera DeMilo and Xena warrior princess. Like if they had a baby, I was gonna go as Vera DeMilo warrior princess

Aaron:

that would've been awesome.

Garret:

I couldn't find a Xena costume, so I, didn't end up doing that, but I loved that character. It was hilarious.

Aaron:

And yes, he was supposed to be a female, but it was, Jim Carey with pigtails,

Ashley:

Usually a bikini

Aaron:

Yeah. Mm-hmm And one of the episodes I watch was you remember the milk commercials, right? Where it shows the kid getting bullied. And then it shows'em drinking milk and they grow big. And then, like, oh, you're not bullying me now that I'm growing. Right. And it was like, it makes instead of milk, it was steroids. So it was like a little kid and then she was eating steroids and then, she ends up whooping the guy's butt when she gets big.

Garret:

voice on that was so funny that raspy, like let's get some, like, I don't know, whatever she, yeah.

Ashley:

She had a list. Why do I feel like she had a list?

Garret:

I think she did have a sort of a list

Ashley:

like a th is that a list? Why would they put an S in the word? why would they put an S in li Isn't that like, kind of cruel

Garret:

But now that you say it, it's kind of funny.

Aaron:

What was it? Where the, they lost her li and then they did something and got it back. And like you son of them when he got hit. Yeah.

Ashley:

What it was, what was it on though? Sorry, son of a bitch.

Aaron:

the cable guy. it was a cable guy. Yeah. It was probably the only funny part. We were just talking about how terrible it was and we were laughing at it, but

Ashley:

his 20 million movie.

Aaron:

but yeah, she did, You, they would just do skits of her. I on once you said live fast, but I'm still gonna die young and pretty. And they did like a pretty in pink skit and a hand that rocks, the cradle, single white female. But like I said, he was in a lot of things. he did, Charlie Manson, the overconfident gay man. Uh, he did a vanilla ice. I don't know if y'all remember that, where he was dancing, but he was offbeat. Oh, he was so bad. all the backup dancers were killing it and he was just, yeah.

Ashley:

And he is like making up weird lyrics. Like it was yeah. Talking about him being white. I think even.

Aaron:

he did Morri Povi do you remember Bob Jackson? The karate instructor?

Ashley:

yes

Aaron:

So you remember the character, he only was on there one time, one skit that's well, it's

Ashley:

just because I've re-watched it oh, okay.

Aaron:

it was almost like a fire marshal bill, but he was a karate instructor and it just went to disaster

Ashley:

Handed up, getting stabbed and beaten up

Aaron:

but my favorite character, I think that he played on all of them was the background guy. I don't know if you guys remember it, but I don't, it would be like a newscast and he would be walking behind it and realize that they were recording. So, like he would just do all kinds of stuff in the, the background,

Ashley:

Just make faces or, I mean, he's so good at

Aaron:

Yeah. Like faces fall, like where you're walking down the stairs, one time he, he gets, abducted by aliens. In the background and then he comes back down and he's like in all this space gear

Garret:

I do think I remember this

Ashley:

that sounds awesome was that more than one though? This was like a recurring. Yeah,

Aaron:

it happened more than one time., they just call him background guy to me, it was so funny because it was something I would do or and I saw somebody else in the background I would laugh,

Ashley:

Especially knowing him now most of it was probably just improv too.

Aaron:

Oh yeah. and that's one thing I wanted to say about him was Jim Carey is like a human special effect. A lot of the stuff that they had to do, he could do it, he could fall and fly back up real quick or make the faces,

Ashley:

you ever watched just his bloopers in movies, liar liar specifically cracks me up every time.

Garret:

Oh yeah. That one was funny.

Ashley:

the stuff that he does is just off the cuff and it's always gonna be good. Definitely one of the biggest names health. oh, for sure. definitely. Or the biggest,

Garret:

I would say the biggest, yeah. Yeah. You

Aaron:

right. James Carey. Mm-hmm

Ashley:

that was in living color. I hope you, loved it as much as we did

Garret:

we decided to do a two-parter. so everything that we missed in this episode will be covered in the next episode.
