Power of Man #393 - "The Disease of Me," with Michael Bugary!!!

Michael Bugary, in his words: "My name is Michael Bugary I am a motivational speaker and author of the book ‘The Disease of Me: How Losing My Professional Baseball Career, Drug Addiction, and Brain Cancer Saved My Life. I played baseball for the University of California, Berkeley and for the Boston Red Sox organization. I suffered a career ending arm injury during my second professional season and I fell into a deep depression. I turned to drugs and alcohol as a solution. As my addiction progressed, eventually to heroin I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor slightly smaller than a tennis ball in my cerebellum. After multiple brain surgeries, nearly two months of intense chemotherapy and radiation I found myself physically, mentally and spiritually broken, once again turning to substances as a solution. 
For years I struggled with depression and intense chronic pain, side-effects from my cancer treatment. Turning my life around wasn’t easy I had a lot of help. I had to learn to become truly honest with myself and take personal responsibility for my actions and choices both past and present. Through exercise and meditation I learned to manage my pain and I began to work on my relationships with God and with other people.  My selfish pursuit of attention, validation and athletic glory led me down a self destructive path. I spent a long time trapped in the prison of my own mind, unable or unwilling to ask for help. I have learned to be grateful for the adversity I have experienced and learned what helps me the most is helping others.
