Welcome back to another Life After Medicine episode. Today we're going to be talking about the life-changing magic of using chat GPT as your new BFF and personalized brainstorming partner for your career search. In the episode, you will learn why all the Googling and all the scrolling job boards isn't helping you get any clearer and the factors besides your degree. That you need to consider when searching for a career, and then three ways that using chatt PT for your job search can completely change the game. I am super excited to dive into this episode because I'm really starting to harness the power of chat GPT in so many areas of my life. And so I thought I would help you guys harness it in this particular area. If you're interested in how I use tragedy, GBT, just in other areas of my life, like how I use it in business, how I use it to uncover subconscious blocks and reprogram and do mindset work. How I use Chad GPT to design my skincare and haircare routines. I literally feel like he's my coworker, my executive assistant, all of the things. And so yeah, if you guys are interested in more, just like. AI use cases in everyday life. I'm also happy to do some of that too. Just send me a message. Let me know what kind of AI topics you're interested in, but onto today's event, which is how to use chat GBT to get unstuck in your career search. So I got an email the other day from someone who signed up for the free event. I did activation codes and she was telling me why she signed up and she said, I'm trying to figure out what to do, but I'm feeling really stuck. And I asked her to elaborate a bit and she's like, well, I have no idea what kind of job to look for. And as somebody with like x subspecialty y background, I'm just not qualified for many things. And then I don't wanna do something meaningless, like, um, and it doesn't matter what this person's subspecialty or background is because whatever it is. You all feel unqualified, right? So it's like you use the one thing that you are to say that you're unqualified, but everyone feels that way, and this is something that I see so often. It's really this combination of not knowing what you want specifically, but then also not knowing what's available to you and not knowing what the options are. You're doing things to try to look for the options, but none of the things you're doing are really jumping out at you. The reason that you feel stuck, it's not because there's no good options. It's not because you're not qualified for anything, it's just because you haven't found your unique path to meaningful work. And that's because no one has shown you how to do that at all. And the way that. Most of us are programmed to think about careers. We have no clue how to do that. So it makes sense that you don't know how to do that and that you haven't found your path to meaningful work. And really the way that we're taught to do it is the things that you're doing right? It's like going to Google and like Googling something like nonclinical jobs for doctors or like alternative careers I can do with my medical degree and. one of the problems with Googling things like that, is that's only taking one variable into account. All you're doing is trying to find new jobs based on your old job, right? Or new jobs based on the, this one variable of your previous education, your previous degree, that's kind of one variable domain. And let me remind you, you, you're not really thrilled with the current job or career that you have. So why is that the only variable that we're taking into account? No, it's because that's the way we're trained to do it. And then when you do that another problem is because it's just taking this one variable into account, you're just getting a bunch of generic cookie cutter options. It's those same list of five to 10 ideas like MSL, um, pharma, whatever it is, and you're looking through this list and. For some people, they want those things and that's great. And if you're that person, you're not listening to this podcast right now because you already found the thing and it was, it spoke to you and you're great, but you're here'cause you don't feel inspired by any of those. Those feel meaningless to you and, and you don't need a new job, right? You don't need one. You don't want to just go into something else and it's the same kind of vibe that you're in now. Like, that doesn't make any sense. You want. Something that feels better, right? Like you want to upgrade, you want something that feels more inspiring, that feels more meaningful and fulfilling, and that also doesn't burn you out, and it's not draining you all the time. And so it's like you want those combinations, but the only thing that you're taking into account when you're trying to figure out your next role is the one factor that you don't even really like to begin with, which is your degree also, doing it in this way can make you feel really limited because you get back this list of options and then you're like, oh, well these are my only possibilities. It's like if you took a career aptitude test growing up and they're like, well, you got flight attendant. There you go. Well, I just got my fate handed to me in a sealed envelope so it sort of falsely limits your options. So then maybe sometimes what you do is you start. You were like, I'm gonna find some outside of the box ideas. And so I'm gonna go into Facebook groups and just like see what other people think. Like what else could I do if we're really getting outside the box or you're like listening to podcast episodes. But honestly doing that, that could work, right? That's you could stumble upon someone else's story, someone else's experience that like piques your interest that you're like, oh yeah. But especially in like a Facebook group, if. It just depends on who's paying attention to their feed that day. Maybe there's someone who has a great story that would totally inspire you or like they know exactly what, where you could look, but they just don't respond that day. And so this is all just like variables up to so much chance Podcast episodes. Maybe the host interviews somebody that inspires you. Maybe they don't. But, and again, that's again, still limiting because just because there's certain people on a podcast or certain people in a Facebook group, that doesn't mean those are the only pathways either and. The whole thing is just not a very reliable strategy. And it could also take a really long time and that's probably why you're still here. Stick it around with me.'cause you're like, yeah, that's not exactly working. Um, and so what I tell my clients and like what we do all the time is it's like you don't need a list of nonclinical careers for doctors. When people are saying like, can you tell me what my options are? I'm like, you don't. I can't give you like a list of options that are different from the ones that you've Googled. You don't need another like Facebook comment suggesting some kind of random path or generic path for you to take. And you really don't need to aimlessly scroll job boards without any idea of what you're looking for, what filters to put on, what kind of things are actually going to be helpful. What you need is a list of options that reflect you. You need a personalized list of options, right? Not just options that are based on your degree, but ones that also factor in these other domains. So I'm gonna go through these domains that I have found to be very important so one is, do you wanna do. Employment roles or entrepreneurial roles. This is a really important domain and it's a very, it's a pivotal branch point, and you might not completely know, but I think you do have some idea, like, do you want to try something of your own that's a really pivotal thing to know is like, do I wanna be thinking about business ideas or do I wanna be thinking about roles where I can get hired and have a job and be employed? Another domain that's important are your values. So values, the way I think about them and how they relate to career, it's what is most important to you about your career? Like, what do you wanna get out of your career? Is it okay if it's something where you're punching the time clock and you're, it just pays the bills and that's it. You can just like hit it and quit it? Or do you want it to have meaning and purpose? Is making a big impact, making a big difference in the world, something that's important to you or Maybe the most important thing about a career is that it just doesn't take over your personal life, that it doesn't like intrude on everything else you wanna do. And then another part of values is it's like, where do you wanna spend your time and energy? So if I know your values. And you're living by your values. I can basically predict what your calendar's gonna look like, right? If your value is some kind of time freedom or flexibility, you probably don't have a bunch of rigid appointments in your calendar that you can't get out of. If your value is family, you probably have a lot of weekends and time blocked off to be with your family. If you're valuing growth, you're probably doing a lot of activities that help you grow. So maybe you're reading a lot or you're progressing in certain hobbies or you're in book clubs or masterminds or something that is challenging you to grow. Your values are really important when it comes to career, because if your biggest values is freedom, but then you're working. 80 hours a week in the hospital. Those are very conflicting. And if your biggest value is wealth, but you're working at like a Starbucks for minimum wage, again conflicting. Or if your biggest value is security and then you're trying to make a business work with a unstable income, like that's not gonna work for you either. Or if creativity's a value, but you're in a role that is super analytical, it's just really rigid, like you're following procedures and processes and there's no space for creativity. All of these things really matter, and so identifying your values is a huge part of finding a career that's the right fit for you. Another domain is strengths. A huge factor that determines whether you feel fulfilled at your job is if you are using your strengths on a day-to-day basis. People who are using their strengths at work. They feel more fulfilled, they're less likely to burn out, they're more likely to just report job satisfaction. They're less likely to quit their jobs. Like using your strengths is this huge predictor of fulfillment in career. So you wanna know what your strengths are, but, and you wanna make sure that any career path you are thinking about. It allows you to spend time using and developing your strengths and a significant amount of time, like we wanna be spending about 70% of our workday using our strengths in some way or another. That's where that that satisfaction really comes from. Another domain to think about are your non-negotiables, there's two ways to look at it. One is, what are your deal breakers? Like, what are the things that, if your job has this. It's a total no for you. When I was doing this exercise with my friends, a lot of us are all, um, like nomadic working remotely, and every single person was like, it has to be remote. It cannot be in person. That's, it's a complete no for me, that's an example of a non-negotiable. But another thing would be like, what do you have to have for your work to feel. Like sustainable, aligned, like maybe you have to have healthcare benefits because you're the only person in your family who can have that. And so that's really important to you. Or maybe you're in a place right now where direct patient care is a no, that needs to be absolutely not even telemedicine of any kind, like that's gonna be a no. And so non-negotiables are just. Sort of the bare minimums and the standards of the things that you either need in place or you need to not be in place in order for you to feel fulfilled at work. Another domain that's important is your curiosities and your interests. Using our strengths at work helps make it all meaningful, but also working in topics that are interesting to us and working with like people, like population groups that are interesting to us. That's also really important So you wanna think about who are the kind of people you're interested in helping? What are the topics that you're interested in? You don't need to include all of your interests in one career, but it's really nice and adds a lot of fulfillment if something you just care about naturally. Is also part of your day-to-day job. It actually saves a lot of energy to not have to force yourself to care about something and you just naturally care about it. You tend to learn more about that topic. You tend to just excel more in that area because you're just interested in it. The final domain to think about is your degree, right? So that is like your medical education, your background, any other certifications you have. Maybe you have other, you know, like A MBA or an MPH, and that's important to think about too, but only from the sense of. Which ones you want to leverage, right? Just because you have a degree or you've taken a course or you're certified in something, it doesn't mean you have to use it. It's just something that if you want to leverage it, that's another leverage point but do you see how much more holistic this is when you're thinking about all of these things and factoring them all in together? That doesn't mean you need to find one path that. Checks every single box, but we wanna take all of these into account as we're thinking about what your next career path is. And by doing this, you get a significantly more holistic approach. And this my loves is exactly why I created drum roll please. Career path. GPT, this is my masterpiece, my greatest invention. No, it's probably not the greatest, but it's a great one. Um, and so career path, GPT is your personalized career idea generator, and what it does is I have built it to brainstorm options that fit you specifically based on these domains. Based on these different inputs, so it doesn't spit out another generic list of options. It's this AI powered tool essentially that gives you customized ideas based on your values, your interests, your strengths and non-negotiables, all those things we just talked about. And so the way it works, the thing that I have created, the career path, GPT, is. You get a worksheet and a YouTube video that really walks you through how to do all of this. Um, but you're gonna answer seven simple questions that relate to these different domains. That helps you assess your inputs and I explain how to do that. And then you plug these inputs, these seven different inputs into the done for you prompt that I've created, which is a very extensive prompt. But all you have to do is place these seven different variables in the places like you'll see how to do. It's like a plug and play thing, and you put all of that into. Chat, TPT. Even if you have the free version, that's totally fine and it generates 15 aligned career ideas for you. And it's not just the idea, right? It goes deep and it goes hard. It gives you job titles, real companies that hire for those positions, gives you linked in search terms and kind of other sometimes. A, a job title can vary in different like industries or, you know, people get creative with that. So it just gives you different, like adjacent job terms that probably job titles that like refer to the same position. And then if you are doing, um, there's branch points you can choose if you're doing the entrepreneurial path, you're doing entrepreneurial ventures. Then it gives you different business ideas, pathways towards monetization, a business model and other successful businesses that are doing something similar, either like in that exact area with that same business model or something a little bit different, but related. And so then you can use all of these, like the, the companies that it gives you the. The businesses that are already doing this. Then you just have all of these starting points, all of these different things you can, and then you can even change the variables, right? You're like, okay, well, I said entrepreneurial this time I wanna stay employed, and then you can get a whole 15 more ideas, right? So it's like this endless iterative process where you can change different inputs and then get different outputs, and then you can just have this endless amount of ideas and things to work with. Why is this a game changer? Because it gives you career ideas that actually make sense for you. It's not generic, it's not cookie cutter at her. It is highly specific. To all of these different inputs that make up you the way that it knows you. After you put these things in is wild. I was testing this with some of my friends and they're like, I've actually done this before. Oh, this is something I've thought about. Oh yeah. And it like, it knows you in these ways that you're like, whoa, this is me. These are exactly for me. These are my career paths. My options not like random ones for anyone else. It's for you. Along with that, maybe there's some you've thought about before or some that you've already done. It also shows you possibilities that you didn't even know existed. There's so many jobs out there. There's like so many companies that hire for roles that you're like, oh, I didn't know that was a thing. And so what career path GPT does. Is, it helps expand your mind to, to make connections that maybe you're like, oh, I didn't realize this was a job, it opens your mind to different, exciting, realistic paths that you might not have considered and you might not have known existed, you wouldn't have known to look for them, but once you see them, they click. And then it also gives you a real starting point because like I said, it doesn't just say try pharma or try, um, it actually gives you job titles, companies, businesses. So you can start a process of making a list of like aligned companies and you can start reaching out to them. There's searchable job titles on LinkedIn. There's a career direction summary it gives you too, which is like, focus on these things and the intersection of this and that and, and that also helps. It's gonna take you from feeling stuck to one, realizing, oh wow, there's so many possibilities. I don't need to be stuck. And then actually having real ways to action on this and move forward. So you can actually start looking up the job titles. You can actually start applying to new roles. It's a really powerful starting point.
