"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Thank you, Sammy, and welcome everybody to a very exciting episode of Fletchcat. I'm your host, Laker Jim. Joining me as always are Jake and Big Bob. Boys, I feel like I just woke up from a Fletch fantasy dream and I'm not really sure if it's real.

Jake Parrish

I'm a little speechless right now. I'm still trying to gather my thoughts. Give me a minute. We're all a little speechless.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Okay, let's not keep everybody in the dark much longer. We're really excited to jump on here and share with you that we were able to see an advanced mini teaser for Confess Fletch. Almost like a trailer, but more like a TV commercial, a 30-second commercial. Now I can assure you, this is real.

FletchCast Intro

Yeah, I assure you.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Not fan-made. It's the real deal.

FletchCast Intro

Correct.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

And it didn't come from the Matola or the McDonald camps. It came from another source that we can't disclose. Now the only negative, and that believe me, this is the only negative. It's got no audio. No audio at all. So what we're going to do is try to break down scene for scene, using our investigative reporter skills to analyze what we know from the book and try to do our best to explain what might be going on in this scene. Again, we don't have volume, we just have video.

"Big Bob" West

We don't have volume, but luckily Jake is an expert lip reader. That's right. It's going to be fine.

Jake Parrish

It's going to be fine.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Now, I should advise you, unless you just want to be completely surprised once the trailer drops, there may be spoilers in this podcast. So let's get started with breaking down the mini teaser trailer for Confess Fletch. Ready. As the trailer opens up, we see a fishing boat. I believe it's I believe it's called a trowel. We see the fishing boat around dawn or sunset, and immediately after we see Fletch sitting in the hammock on the boat. So John Ham is relaxing, got his shirt open. He's got a wine type shirt, and he's relaxing on the boat.

"Big Bob" West

Yes. He's got a very fletch body. Would you agree? Yeah, he does. Yes, he does. It's almost like Chevy's 1985 body, exactly.

unknown

Right.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

But you got to give it to John Ham for getting into Chevy Chase shape for this film.

Jake Parrish

What exactly is the regiment for something like that? I want to backpills.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

So then there's a cut to a picture that's taken, you know, within his view. And we believe this is a picture of Angela, his fiancee. Yep. Actress Lorenza Izzo. Correct.

Jake Parrish

Which would make sense, right, Jake, as far as the book goes. Absolutely. This is definitely Andy. This scene is not in the book. And I'm curious where it takes place. I think this is in Italy somewhere. And maybe he's just not with Andy right now. Um, that's just my guess.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Right. It gives you the feeling like he's missing her.

Jake Parrish

Yes.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

But it's just taped up to like a fun visor or something. Then the next very next scene, we see John Ham riding a scooter of some sort. Vespa. Looks like a Vespa.

"Big Bob" West

Yeah. Clearly again, clearly in the It'll be again.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Yes. Fletch is wearing a black motorcycle helmet and sunglasses as he zooms by. And then the scene cuts to black. And in purple impact font, we see the name John Ham. The very next scene shows Fletch walking down a hallway, a very elegant hallway. Yeah. Could this be the hallway that leads to the apartment he's renting?

Jake Parrish

I'm pretty sure this is Haran's art gallery.

"Big Bob" West

At least it could be makes sense because there is art on the wall that's being highlighted by lights, and there's archways and everything, and marble floors.

Jake Parrish

It also could be, like you said, Jim, it could be a hotel.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Right. It kind of sets up what's happening to happen next. Right. Then what we see is the screen divided into three. On the far left pane, we see the close-up of a woman's dead face. In the middle frame, we see Fletch looking down on this woman. And on the right hand frame, we see her entire body laying on the floor in a green dress.

Jake Parrish

This is definitely in the book. The only difference is that she was naked in the book. What's interesting though, in the middle frame, though, what is what does John Ham have on his head? What does Fletch have on his head? He's got the Laker hat on.

"Big Bob" West

He's got the purple Laker hat. He's also wearing a watch. I wonder if that's a championship Laker watch. Oh, yeah, maybe it is. Something else to note here, too. John Ham is wearing it's either a light blue or a white button-down shirt and a tan uh sports coat. That's going to come into play in the next couple of frames as well.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Yeah. Now it looks like this is happening again at almost like sunset, the way the sun is coming in through the window. Which Jake, I believe, correct me if I'm wrong. Didn't this happen very late at night?

Jake Parrish

Yes. So, yeah, because Fletch didn't come into the airport from Italy into Boston until that evening. So this is definitely when he first comes into the apartment and notices there's a dead body on the floor.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Okay, the very next scene we see, we see Roy Wood Jr., who plays Detective Monroe, and he's showing Fletch, still in the Laker hat, a looks like a surveillance video on his phone. And John Hammond kind of looking like, I don't know what that is. It looks like it's the dead woman laying on the rug, correct? It's hard to tell. Most likely it's something incriminating. Yeah. Next thing we see is Detective Monroe arresting Fletch, handscuffed behind his back, kind of forcing him against the cop car.

"Big Bob" West

Right. And he's still wearing the same white button down, doesn't have the sports coat on, but still the Laker hat.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Right. So most likely the arrest follows the scene we just previously saw, but this does not happen in the book because Fletch does not get arrested that night.

Jake Parrish

No, no, not at all. In fact, just the opposite. Remember Flynn's nickname, it's reluctant, Flynn, that he is very reluctant to arrest people. So this is just the complete opposite.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Yeah. But if he finds the body when it's still somewhat light out, and he is arrested that same night in the darkness, then a good amount of time passed between finding the body and getting arrested. So I know in the book he goes out to lunch, but I think that happens before he finds the body. Yes. I know he pours himself a drink. He's very relaxed. When he calls the police uh to report the murder, yes. Uh he's very relaxed, and I think that throws everybody off. Interesting. Next we see an older gentleman painting in a field, waving and happy.

Jake Parrish

Who is that? Who is that painting? I believe that this is Andy's father. Okay. That is my assumption that this is back in Italy. This is Andy's father, perhaps, because the very next scene is the countess sitting in that same field or in that same area.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

The the man painting blows our kiss, she she raises her glass in a toast type way. But Andy's father is dead when the book begins. So possibly a flashback. The next scene, black. The word in the purple font is a continuation of the John Hamm slide. John Ham is, and I think we know where that's going. Then we see Fletch in bed. He pulls the covers over him, and who pops up? It's the Countess. It's the Countess in bed with Fletch.

Jake Parrish

Yeah. Now this did happen in a book. Yes. When I saw that, I was like, oh my god, that's awesome. They kept that.

"Big Bob" West

This is one of those scenes where we really struggle without having audio because I'm sure there's some funny dialogue and banter just based on the face that Fletch is making, that John Hamm is making. He looks like he's upset, doesn't understand how he's gotten in himself in this situation. So again, if we would know, if we had any idea of what was being said, it would be we'd be much more helpful.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

But we do know that the Countess does seduce Fletch in the book. Yes.

"Big Bob" West

Yes. Well, I don't, but you guys do.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

The very next scene we see set in a kitchen of some sorts, and we're not quite sure where this kitchen is. But we see the actress Annie Momolo, who plays Eve, and she's having a conversation with John Hamm, and directly behind her is a huge oven fire that has started. She seems completely unaware of it, and John Hamm's trying to be, you know, he's trying to focus on what she's saying, but he's very distracted by the fire behind her, and kind of can't believe that she's so oblivious to what's going on uh in the kitchen. It's a really funny scene.

Jake Parrish

My theory on this is that is a neighbor of the apartment that he's renting in Boston. Because he did have an interaction with the neighbor in the book in Boston, there, although not the same age, but I'm but she was a bit of a drunk, a bit of an alcoholic. So I think that could be Fletch talking to the neighbor and asking about the person who actually has the apartment and about the murder. That is some dynamite investigative journalism there. Thank you very much. Thank you very much.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

We then cut to another scene of a very pretty woman.

"Big Bob" West

Pretty sure that's Andy. That's Andy, right? Yeah, I think that's really hot. Really hot in this scene. Beautiful smile. She's got an orange dress. Different kitchen, though, right?

Jake Parrish

You think that's different? Definitely different kitchen. I'm thinking this maybe might be back in Edalin.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Okay. Yeah, makes sense. So Fletch and a few people are convening around the center island of the kitchen while Andy is dicing up some vegetables or something. Right. A tall gentleman just turns and cracks Fletch right in the face, sends him flying.

"Big Bob" West

Knocks him out cold. Fletch sees it coming and just takes it like a champ. Andy jumps, covers her mouth, like, oh my god. There's also another woman behind Andy. So I'm wondering if this is like a dinner party. I'm not sure what's going on here. Do you think this is maybe like a flashback scene where this is where he first meets Andy, and then maybe that's her boyfriend and he's hitting on her, and that's why he gets knocked out? Yeah, I mean, it's possible.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

I agree, it's definitely a dinner party because the next scene, Fletch is in the same outfit with other people from the same party. So I would agree it's a dinner party. It probably is in Italy because the guy who punches Fletch is wearing a scarf tied around his neck. Very Italian-looking shirt he's wearing. Not necessarily a Boston style, but if you guys remember, there was an on the set photo of the actress playing Andy, who was posing for photographers with her arms up. She's wearing the exact same orange dress. Yes. So could this have been an Italy interior shot that was filmed in Boston? Yeah. Right, right. Could it be a flashback, like Bob said? Possibly, because Fletch in the book is never physically in Italy. So they might have just backed it up, backed the story up past the beginning of the book. Um, but right now we can only speculate.

"Big Bob" West

And and look at the the Schmorgersborg of appetizers.

Jake Parrish

That's a scenery party. There's a lot of food on the table. That's why I'm thinking this may be back in Italy, or maybe uh yet, like you said, party.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

If you listeners at home could see what we're looking at, but it's so unfortunate that we can't show it.

Jake Parrish

No, no, we don't want to get sued. By the way, Fletch or John Hamm makes a great face when he's talking to the, I guess, potential neighbor with a fire behind her on the stove. He makes this face that's just like, uh-huh. Oh my god, it looks really funny. That's a good call. Really funny, really funny.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Okay, the very next scene we see Fletch have a gun pulled on. Okay, now he's wearing the same outfit he's in when he gets punched in the face. Right, right.

Jake Parrish

So it's probably the same dinner party, but it's not the same person, it's not the same person that has the gun on him now.

"Big Bob" West

I mean, for all we know, that could just be someone he didn't pay his dinner check to.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

I mean, I'm sure he'd be happy to pay it, but Fletch is batting a thousand tonight here. During this dinner party, he gets a gun pulled on him, and Fletch kind of throws up his hands, like, hey, buddy, you know.

"Big Bob" West

So, one one thing about this guy pulling the gun, he doesn't look like he belongs to this dinner party. He's wearing like a red, what do you call those? A red, like zip-up kind of like a hoodie or something.

Jake Parrish

Yeah.

"Big Bob" West

He's got his hands up.

Jake Parrish

He looks like him, looks great. He he looks great.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Kind of looks like the scene where uh the mattress police when uh like he's like so you're saying she moved out's morning.

"Big Bob" West

Yeah, doesn't look like Ham was punched in the face when he's got his hands up. So I'm wondering about when that happens and this happens and so on. But but yeah, you gotta wonder again, with no audio, it's hard to tell, but why is he getting a gun told on him by this guy? And what has he gotten himself into?

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

The shot is literally set up almost like the original Fletch poster, yeah, with the hand and the gun, and all he needs is just a roll of IDs. So then we cut the black and we see in purple letters Fletch, the word Fletch. Donham is Fletch. Yep. Donham is Fletch.

"Big Bob" West

I got goosebumps when I saw that.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

So the very next scene, uh, we see a very close-up of Fletch's California license. Right.

Jake Parrish

And he's got a really stupid like picture. It's great. He's making it really funny.

"Big Bob" West

He's got a face, he's got a face he's making like as if he's as if he's drunk or tired or sleeping, you know, the kind of thing that you you want to make that face so that if you are drunk, then you know, cop pulling you over.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Yeah, it's the kind of face you make kind of when you're not ready for the photo or the flash is too bright, your eyes kind of close. Yeah, mouth open. Now the footage we're watching is not the clearest video, but you can make out very clearly that the ID does say Fletcher, Erwin Maurice. Yep. His signature under his photo says Erwin Fletcher is signed Erwin Fletcher, and the date of birth on a California license is in is in red and kind of like a little bit bigger. And I'm squinting my way towards February 14th, 1967. Yeah. It's either 77 or 67. I think seven, I think it's sixty-seven. I think sixty-seven. Yeah, you have you got some eagle eyes, I tell you. Which makes Fletch 55 years old, 55. Which is on par with John Ham, a little older than Ham, but um way older than Fletch in the books. As we've mentioned in the past, Chevy was as well. Correct. Then we find out who's looking at the ID. It's Detective Monroe. Roy Wood Jr. is wearing a suit, tie, badge hanging from the tie. He looks down at the ID, looks up at Fletch. Right. John Hamm is now imitating the exact face that he's making in his ID.

Jake Parrish

Oh my gosh, so funny.

"Big Bob" West

Now, a couple things to note. This is now the third kitchen that they're in because you could see the refrigerator behind John Hamm, and you could see the the the range behind Roywood Jr. Right, right. But also John Hamm is back to wearing the blue button-down shirt and the the tan sports coat that we think he got arrested in and that he was wearing when he found the dead body.

Jake Parrish

Right. So this is definitely probably when the police first arrive at the apartment. He just doesn't have the Lakers hat on anymore. But I think this is definitely in the beginning, and that's why he's showing him his ID, which is really neat because he still has a California license, which I think is is really cool.

"Big Bob" West

I want to think he doesn't have the Laker hat on because he took it off so that he could match the photo better. Right, the photo.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

In the next scene, we see Fletch pop his head up on another boat. Now, this is a different boat than we saw originally, which was a fishing boat. This is a different kind of boat.

"Big Bob" West

That is a different boat. Yeah, it looks like an improvement. Yeah, definitely like a yacht.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

It's definitely a nicer boat with a sail. Yeah, it's more of a schooner. You then see an older gentleman in the foreground wearing a captain's hat, and Fletch salutes him wearing a navy sports coat with a yacht club patch right on the front.

Jake Parrish

Yacht club, yes. We saw a version of this when we had the first photos released. There was a still of Fletch in this uh blazer with the crest.

"Big Bob" West

Right.

Jake Parrish

So, but again, this doesn't take place in the book. None of this is in the book. This whole yacht scene is totally new.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Something about the wage Fletch just pops up out of nowhere.

Jake Parrish

That's funny, and then salutes this guy. And then salutes him.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

I get the you get the feeling he's not supposed to be on this boat.

Jake Parrish

Right. Exactly. You know he's messing around. Kind of like how he pops up from underneath the mattress, you know. Kind of pops up all of a sudden. I'm up.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Yeah, and he gives him sort of like almost a sarcastic salute.

"Big Bob" West

Yeah, I was just gonna say, you know, he's definitely up to no good. I can't wait to see how this all plays out.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

You then see the logo title scene. The word fletch is in purple in the classic fletch font. Rising from the L emerges confess diagonally from left to right in yellow. So we got yellow confess, purple fletch, the same exact logo that we've seen on Greg Matola's clapboard, as well as the back of the cast chairs, and was used on the Gregory McDonald book, correct, Jake?

Jake Parrish

Yeah, which is it looks great. I mean, it looks great. I love the purple and yellow, and the way they had confess come out at an angle. I just love that. Comes right up uh above the T and it looks it looks great.

"Big Bob" West

Yeah, Laker Colors.

Jake Parrish

Yeah, Laker Colors.

"Big Bob" West

That's a good call. 30 seconds in total, 30 second mini trailer. And I'll tell you, the the one takeaway I had on about you guys from this whole thing was he has very funny flex-like mannerisms in this. Right. Whether he if he's reacting to something, making a face, putting his hands up, whatever the case is, it looks very funny. Man, I can't wait for this movie to come out.

Jake Parrish

Yeah, I am really optimistic about it. I think it looks great. I think it looks really funny. Ham looks good. Ham is a great choice. I mean, yeah, I I looking at this, I am I was convinced before, but now even just seeing this video, not even hearing it, just seeing his mannerisms and his expressions, and I think it's gonna be great. I I I'm really excited about it now.

"Big Bob" West

The two things about the trailer, too, that I know that I wanted to make note of. Uh no Kyle McLachlan, no John Slattery, and no any Aceola. No Larry, no Frank, no Haran.

Jake Parrish

Well, this is just a teaser, you know, 30 cents. Yeah.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

You bring up a good point because if this was put together, we're guessing possibly as a sales tool or something, maybe for the distributors to see. Uh, you would want your recognizable stars visible in it without giving any plot points. You could have put Slattery and McLaughlin in there to just show it's got recognizable star power other than Ham. I'm surprised Haran's not in it. Yeah, I mean, he is the bad guy.

"Big Bob" West

Yeah, that's where I was going with that. He's kind of the standwick of the story. You'd think that he would definitely be featured, but again, it's just a 30-second teaser trailer. Who knows?

Jake Parrish

Let's just watch it all through. Let's just watch it completely through without stopping.

"Big Bob" West

Yeah.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

As incredible as this was to watch, the inability to hear it leaves you wondering did John Hamm voice over a narration throughout? Did a generic narrator voice over the story of Confessed Fletch? But most importantly, does the Harold Faltermeyer Fletch theme play during this trailer? You know, the whole time I'm watching it, I keep hearing.

"Big Bob" West

And I'm hoping that that might be the case.

Jake Parrish

I'm curious what this was cut for. I don't know if it was cut for distributors just to take a look at, maybe just to, you know, get a taste for the movie, if this is going to be something that's actually going to be I mean, I do think it's a great teaser because it just really shows off ham. And this this whole Boston setting, it's so exciting. And the fact that they shot in Italy too, just really seals it to me. That's really cool about the Vespa, though. I mean, we know that's not a book, but I know Bob, you were kind of on the fence about him driving a Vespa.

"Big Bob" West

Well, you know, I guess that has to do with the fact that he is in Italy. We'll see what happens when he comes to Boston, you know. Boston is a kind of town where you can get around at the foot for a lot of it.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

It might just be a way to show the setting of the beginning of the movie.

Jake Parrish

Yeah, I this is probably gonna be the first few seasons of the movie, is him in Italy. This is how we're gonna set up the character.

"Big Bob" West

I was gonna say, in all fairness, too, you you can't drive around Italy in a giant red Cadillac that has no brakes.

Jake Parrish

You know, you I like that he he slept with the countess. I thought that was great. Boy, I love that scene, that first apartment when the fire is in the background, and he gives her that look that that is so funny. God, I love that look.

"Big Bob" West

Yeah, that look and the one when he gets the gun pulled on him are great. Oh, yeah. You know what other look too is great, too? Uh when when Monroe shows him the phone, he kind of looks like he's saying, like, oh, that's yeah, that is pretty incriminating, you know. Like the way he guys reacts, it's really funny. He's got the facials down really good. Thank you.

Jake Parrish

I can tell you, as Fletch fans, we're excited, and I think you guys should be excited too, because I think the character is done right. Just looking at the video, it looks like a really nice balance between Confess Fletch the book and still some homage to the original movie, too. I I think it it looks Perfect.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

And I think what we're assured of is we're going to see Fletch in all kinds of crazy situations, all kinds of predicaments that only Erwin M. Fletcher can talk his way out of, bullshit his way out of. I think it's going to be very Fletch. Yeah.

Jake Parrish

I love that shot of him on that vest spot. I think that's hilarious. I think it's great.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

He's very interesting, very upright. He's very proper. Black helmet on. Yeah. He's in his sports coat. Oh, one in one in Rome, you know.

Jake Parrish

This is a true teaser. Yeah. Yeah. Doesn't it look funny though to you guys? Doesn't it look really funny?

"Big Bob" West

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It looks like it's gonna be exceeding expectations, you know. Just from what I the 30 seconds I saw, I'm I'm pumped up for this. I just want to hear it.

Jake Parrish

I just I want to hear I hear someone say fletch.

"Big Bob" West

I want to hear that. I want to hear that John Hamm Fletch cadence so bad. Yeah, and I want to hear the theme song. That's what I want to hear. Yeah, that's most important. It's hearing that Harry Faltenmeyer gold in our ears.

Jake Parrish

Play it through one more time, LJ. I want to watch it again. I've been watching it since we've had it. I've been you're really making our listeners salvate here.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Uh the one thing I will comment on is the fiance is hot. I mean, she's really she's gorgeous.

Jake Parrish

Yeah. I love the editing, I love how it flows.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Yeah. But literally every scene you think, only Fletch. How did you get yourself in this mess?

Jake Parrish

I know he's always in trouble.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

I know it's always like we don't know.

"Big Bob" West

We don't know what we're watching right now. You know, you never know with a trailer what what's gonna land where, you know, but but I think you're right. I think that the Italy scenes where he's on the Vespa, I think that's the opening of the movie, if I had to guess.

Jake Parrish

Unless they bring him back to Italy at the end. They didn't in the book, but um in Fletch's fortune, which is the next book, he's living in Italy again. So he does end up back there after he's in Boston. Interesting. I'm telling you guys out there listening, you're gonna be so excited when you see this.

"Big Bob" West

Hopefully soon. Wow, Cohasset Harbor is beautiful. What a gorgeous town!

Jake Parrish

Yeah, that's where all those yacht scenes were shot.

"Big Bob" West

Yeah, that's that's a big bunny, big bunny area, old mansions and everything.

Jake Parrish

And Jim, wasn't there some stills when they were out there in Massachusetts of like wasn't it like a clam bake or something like that?

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

Yeah, and the clam bake is where he's in the crested jacket. So I'm gonna guess either he stole the jacket off of the boat right before he got caught so he can get to the clam bake, or he goes to the clam bake to investigate whoever's boat that is.

Jake Parrish

I love that salute too. It's like a real smart ass look.

"Laker Jim" James Kanowitz

I love that salute with one eyebrow up. Yeah, one eyebrow raised.

"Big Bob" West

Uh and the countess scenes, those take place in Italy or those take place in Boston. Boston. She's after her husband's art.

Jake Parrish

Yeah, his paintings, yeah, that have gone missing.

"Big Bob" West
