Learning for L&D Professionals, with Joti Joseph
Show Notes

In this episode of L&D Go Beyond podcast, Amit Garg speaks with Joti Joseph, Director of Talent & Learning at Vontobel, Switzerland about learning for L&D professionals. Joti has 26 years of global experience in learning and development and retail banking. With her vast cross-functional experiences, she has a unique capability of seeing situations from multiple perspectives and devising solutions accordingly. In Joti’s opinion, about the podcast topic, it’s like going back to the basics and something that comes out from ‘common sense’, investing in our own capability, acting as role model for our learners and stakeholders to focus on, and with previous experience reinforcing upon always developing ourselves along with our community.

While recalling her experience with Upside doing an eLearning on ‘unconscious bias’, Joti emphasizes on how it taught her about being careful about generalizations. She also mentions that when we are focusing on our own capability, it’s the moment when we as learning professionals start thinking we’ve have cracked it, got this skill and know everything, that’s where the problem begins.

Joti shares her experience as a learning and development professional without being prescriptive, admitting that everyone’s journey is going to be unique. She says that she regards her project with Deloitte influenced her development as an L&D professional a lot.

Here are the key takeaways from this podcast-

  • User experience and culture as predominant factors in solving problems and adding value for L&D professionals.
  • Leveraging the power of influencing without authority amongst the two L&D superpowers.
  • Capability of saying ‘No’ to training and shifting towards ‘know’ for an L&D through slight tweaking of the environment, enabling performance and adding value.
  • Consulting & asking the right questions for L&D in the information overload scenario by emphasizing on ‘why’ and ‘who’ first.
  • Approaching data from L&D perspective and partnering with relevant expertise.
  • Feedback as a powerful learning tool & leveraging it as a wasted opportunity.
