Hello and welcome to Circle of Parks podcast episode number 166. Today we are doing a dining review on Disney's Animal Kingdom's Tusker House. There is far too much to see and do. We are here to help guide you through. But before we do that we must talk Disney merch, disney merch.
Speaker 1:So this week at DisneyStorecom there is a new line of the Disney Eats collection. This time it is Pineapple Swirl. So you have new pineapple ears with a dole whip in the middle and a green bow. The ears themselves look like slices of pineapple. I actually think it's really cute. And then the rest of the line. There's a Disney Eats Pineapple Swirl Lounge Fly Mini Backpack as well as a Spirit Jersey and a Starbucks Tumbler to go with it. So not going to list all the prices, I will say the ears are $39.99. But I just think it's a really cute line. If you like yellow, this will be the line for you to go check out Again Spirit Jersey, ears, loungefly and more. So please go check that out. And we have merch. If you go to our website, circleofparkscom, click on merch, it takes you directly to Tee Public and from there you can find things such as stickers, coffee mugs, sweatshirts, t-shirts and more. So please go check that out.
Speaker 2:All right. Thank you everybody for joining us. Episode number 166. Talking about Tusker House Breakfast, and yeah, if you're new to this show, we do this every single week. I'm zach, I'm britney and we are. We hope, to help help you have a better. I'm just messing this all up today. We hope to help you have a better disney vacation and break your week up and bring you to disney once a week. Now I know we've been doing a lot of these dining reviews. We've got three more after this.
Speaker 1:I believe so.
Speaker 2:And then we're going to get back to normal episodes. We've got some fun ones that we're going to do. I think it'll be fun for the listeners, fun for us to do, so look forward to that. But we've got three more to do after this. But this week we're talking all about Tusker House Restaurant and I'm sorry I sound bad. Allergies are like killing everybody here in Tennessee. It's hot, it's really hot.
Speaker 1:No rain, it was cooler last week.
Speaker 2:Cool last week, but yeah, so if I sound a little off, I may have a little bit of a cough. The allergies are just killing everybody here. Speaking of hot, let's go to Africa, right? Yes, we're going to go to Harambee Market and talk about Tusker House, Brittany. What does Disney say about the Tusker House restaurant?
Speaker 1:So yes, they say, a colorful restaurant with character. Step inside this lively Harambee Marketplace eatery and enjoy family-friendly surroundings. The plentiful buffet offers favorites for breakfast, lunch and dinner. While you dine, snap a photo and tip your helmet to Donald Duck, suited up and ready for his next safari adventure, along with his Disney friends as they travel throughout the dining room celebrating their latest expedition. It's a wild good time every time it continues to say favorites with a safari flavor. Say jumbo to a delightful buffet of fantastic favorites and new discoveries. For breakfast, munch on safari bread, mickey and Simba waffles, durban chicken and egg curry with jasmine rice. Lunch and dinner offerings include Moroccan spiced beef, berbere marinated pork, spit-roasted herb chicken and Cape Malay green curry shrimp. Younger travelers will find comforting classics like fruit and yogurt for breakfast, mac and cheese for lunch and dinner.
Speaker 2:All right, so it's time for history Now. Surprisingly, I could not find a lot about this. It was very hard. Yeah. To find even just some basic history about the Tusker House restaurant. I had to go through like page five of the Google searches to find anything about the Tusker House, and so what I'm going to do is I'm going to read from a couple of old dining reviews.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker 2:This one's from, I think, 2005 or 2006. And it's from a website called yesterlandcom. I think that's kind of a cool website name, yeah. So this one talks about the Tusker House restaurant and it says it's a colorful, african-themed counter service restaurant Interesting.
Speaker 2:Interesting, right. So this goes starts with Hotel Buridika. Never heard of that? No, no. Adventurous travelers flock to the Hotel Buridika in the East African village of Harambe. It's a popular place to rest before or after a two-week safari into the forest, wetlands and savanna of the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. And now you're here too, excuse me. One reason for the Hotel Buridika's popularity is its Tusker House restaurant the best place in the village for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. The best place in the village for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. There's also the hotel's Dawa Bar for African wine, specialty cocktails and thirst-quenching beers, but that's another story. So the Dawa Bar is still there. Yes, excuse me, all right. So this website has a picture of an elephant. It says Tusker House Restaurant good food. It's not there anymore. This was from 2005. So a little bit Been.
Speaker 2:A little bit Been a little bit A bull elephant, a Tusker on the Tusker House sign. Perhaps you would expect Tusker House Restaurant to offer a fancy buffet, but it didn't at the time it didn't at the time.
Speaker 2:Nope, this is an unpretentious place. You order at a counter in the hotel's two-story lobby, your food is served quickly, then you look for an empty table. You've probably already figured out that you're not really in Eastern Africa. You're at Yester Animal Kingdom and the year is between 1998 and 2007. Hotel Buridika makes Harambee Market feel authentic, but it's not a real hotel. Obviously, some of the if I'm looking at the pictures here, it still looks like the wall markings that's on there are still there to this day, but it's got a picture of what it looks like when you walk in and you know the big open-air market where all the food is Like it looks the big open air market where all the food is Like. It looks like an open air market where the buffet is Right right.
Speaker 2:That was all the quick service area right there.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker 2:Which makes sense.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:So as you study the menu, you notice it's more American than African. If you were expecting a Rio Maharagi, ugali, sukuma Wiki or Naima Choma, you won't find them here. What you will find is less exotic, but also it is quite delicious. Again, keep in mind. So this photo is from 2007. This is the menu. The entrees were a half rotisserie chicken served with garlic, mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Guess how much that cost in 2007?.
Speaker 1:I don't know, $7.99. Oh, wow, okay.
Speaker 2:Grilled salmon served with joll of rice and seasonal vegetables, also $7.99. Chicken salad topped with balsamic vinaigrette dressing $6.99. Vegetable sandwich $7.29. Fried chicken sandwich $6.99. And turkey wrap for $7.29. So not really adventurous African, no.
Speaker 1:No.
Speaker 2:And the kid picks were chicken drumstick, macaroni and cheese, and then the beverages.
Speaker 1:So definitely has changed, for sure, you know. But I'm glad to hear from the pictures you're looking at that some of the markings and stuff have stayed the same.
Speaker 2:The theming yes, all right. So goes on to say you say you want the salmon, good choice. The season the fish is seasoned well, the vegetables are hot but not mushy, and the tusker house version of jollof rice is even a nod to africa. Okay, so you do have your african influences there, and they got a picture of the salmon with the rice and all that. If you can see that oh yeah, so it.
Speaker 1:It does have the rice and I don't know, the seasonings look a little little different, maybe.
Speaker 2:Yeah so I will link this to the show notes on this podcast so you can read this article if you want to. Uh, not only have, not. Now you only have one more decision where to eat your meal. There are plenty of tables inside and outside. As you wander around, take a look at the authentic art and artifacts. If you don't mind eating while standing head out to the street, where there's often entertainment, could you imagine eating outside at Animal Kingdom?
Speaker 1:Well, I mean, there are places that offer outdoor seating and stuff, but yeah, it's hot. It's hot and knowing what the restaurant is now, that's just a little odd, no way.
Speaker 2:So it's got some pictures of the outdoor seating and so you know when you're going to go check. When you have to check in, you walk around that corner to go to the main entrance to Tusker House. After you check in, that used to be like a little seating area. Okay. So that would be kind of like a little nook.
Speaker 1:Well, explain this area you're talking about to those that haven't been there.
Speaker 2:Well, if you go check in at the Daba Bar and then once you've done that and they've called your table, you walk behind the Daba Bar and to the right there's like a little nook area, kind of like. It's not private area because you can get to it from not being inside there, but they had some tables set up with little huts and stuff.
Speaker 2:It looks kind of cool. So, anyway, when it's time to eat at Yester Animal Kingdom, satisfy your beastly hunger at the Tusker House restaurant. Tusker House restaurant was part of Disney's Animal Kingdom when the fourth theme park at Walt Disney World officially opened on Earth Day. So Tusker House was an opening day restaurant, but it's just wasn't, as it is now Right On Earth Day, April 22, 1998, surprisingly, while other parks offer numerous table service and buffet options, the new Animal Park relied almost entirely on counter service. The two exceptions were table table service chain restaurant Rainforest Cafe at the park entrance and Donald's Breakfast-saurus character breakfast buffet at Restaurant-a-saurus in Donnelland, USA.
Speaker 1:Hmm, okay.
Speaker 2:That's interesting.
Speaker 1:It is.
Speaker 2:Very interesting. It seemed odd and it would be corrected in 2007. So there's a sign saying Tusker House Restaurant closed for renovations. It seemed odd and it would be corrected in 2007. So there's a sign saying Tusker House Restaurant closed for renovations. Please visit Flametree Restaurant or Pizzafari. Don't go to Pizzafari, and this is a photo from 2007. Tusker House Restaurant closed on August 20, 2007 for a three-month remodel. That was its end as a counter service restaurant no more plasticware or paper cups.
Speaker 2:Before Tusker House Restaurant would reopen, the company behind Rainforest Cafe opened a second table service restaurant in the park, which was Yak and Yeti, serving pan-Asian food in the Napoli-steamed restaurant opened in the Asian section on November 14, 2007, and it wasn't a chain restaurant at this time, but it's still owned by a chain restaurant. Three days later, on November 17, 2007, tusker House Restaurant reopened as a full-service buffet. The name did not change. Guests were surprised to find a pricey, ambitious, african-inspired buffet where they had previously enjoyed relatively inexpensive American food. I'd be curious to see what the pricing. Ooh, it's right here. We'll get to that in a second. On the same day, donald's Breakfast-saurus character breakfast with Donald, daisy, goofy and Mickey moved from Restaurant-a-saurus, where it ended on November 2nd 2007, to Tusker House Restaurant becoming Donald's Safari Breakfast. There were no characters at lunch or dinner at first, so it all got moved.
Speaker 1:Right right.
Speaker 2:Tusker House added characters to the lunch on December 4th 2011, and to dinner on March 8th 2015. All right, so this picture is from 2019, and it's showing the prices for the breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Speaker 1:Didn't we eat there in 2019?
Speaker 2:We did Breakfast. We had breakfast $38, ages 10 and over. Guests age 3 to 9, $23. So still less than what it is now, but not too far off.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:And so they didn't have any prices from there. After Tusker House Restaurant stopped its counter service restaurant in 2007, guests not wanting the buffet feast had limited options. In Africa's section of Disney's Animal Kingdom, Tamu Tamu Eats and Refreshments, Kusafari Coffee and Bakery, Harambee Fruit Market and Dawa Bar, which is only a bar, there was a need for a place offering quick meals with plenty of seating. It wasn't until May 23, 2015,.
Speaker 2:Until Harambee Market opened Interesting Very interesting and it shows pictures of Harambee, the market and the food, which I thought the food at harambee market was actually pretty good right, but we're staying on tusker house yeah, so that's a pretty interesting history for for tusker house yeah, I think so.
Speaker 1:And then just how, as we know it now, it got moved over from dino land and all that. Yeah, but I thought the time.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think that's kind of cool, yeah, so if you would like to make a reservation at Tusker House, you know who to reach out to. Of course, you do, of course.
Speaker 2:The professionals at Main Street Travel. They are the official sponsor of this podcast and we use them for all of our Disney and non-Disney vacation needs. You know we, erica, she knows when we plan our trip, like hey, these are the dates we want to go the, these are the restaurants we're thinking about doing. Then, like a week or so out, she's like, hey, is this still your plan? Are these the days you still want to eat there the times, and just takes care of the rest for us.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and if you book Disneyland with our travel planner, Travel Planner Erica she's going to throw a hundred dollar gift card to you.

Save time, save stress, save money. It's just, it's a pleasure working with them.
Speaker 1:It truly is yeah, so please go check them out, yeah all right, so we've got a reservation for tusker house.
Speaker 2:What do we do?
Speaker 1:when you get there on the day of when it's when it's time to go check in yes, so, closer to your check-in time, you can check in via the my disney experience app or at the desk next to the dawa bar. Then, once you're ready, you will follow them along a path to the restaurant, which is what we were describing earlier. Uh, you walk behind the dawa bar and then kind of cut over to the right. Upon entering, you are immediately hit with a marketplace vibe, which is true especially right inside the doors as well as outside of the doors, and then, when you see the buffet area, inside is meant to resemble an open-air market. With that, it is shaded by bright textiles and looks like an authentic two-story building. There are different dining rooms, but they maintain the overall atmosphere yeah, so that's where the hotel came in.
Speaker 2:Like two, it used to be a two-story hotel, okay, so that that was the original theming of it right it's bright. It does resemble that market. You do get hit with those vibes and the detail in the dining room is again it's.
Speaker 1:This is animal kingdom the details are on point on point throughout. For sure now we ate at breakfast again at some point.
Speaker 2:Eventually we will do like lunch or dinner so is this the first restaurant we have repeated um sit down yeah, that's what I'm trying to think. Possibly, I think it is because we ate here on our second trip, when we went for breakfast and it was delicious.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I mean we've enjoyed it both times, but I would at some point eventually like to try it a different time of the day. But for breakfast for adults it's $47 per adult and $30 per child.
Speaker 2:So it's gone up a little bit since 2019.
Speaker 1:Yep, now you know it's a buffet, so you're going to have, you know, some of your classics and your traditional pastries. But they do have zebra coffee cake, multigrain croissants, blueberry mini muffins, chocolate twist, danish guava cream cheese, danish cinnamon buns bagels. They have the Mickey waffles, but also Simba waffles.
Speaker 2:I got to get Simba waffles here.
Speaker 1:Yes, I think I did too. And hard-boiled eggs, overnight oats, granola, fruit salad, breakfast potatoes, just sausage bacon, all of that stuff. And rotisserie ham, which I did have the ham here and it was really good, and Dooley sausage pieces. Fruits. You have breakfast cocktails. You can get an African Bloody Mary, african mimosa.
Speaker 2:Keep in mind, if you're on the dining plan, this is a cocktail is included, if you want it. One One, yes, yes.
Speaker 1:Then they have mocktails as well pomegranate lemonade, sparkling nojito or nojito grapefruit spritzer and watermelon lemonade. Then the non-alcoholic beverages. You can get a specialty character drink, lava smoothie, all natural lemonade, sparkling water, wild strawberry lemonade. Didn't they have the pog juice here too?
Speaker 2:They Smoothie all natural lemonade, sparkling water, wild strawberry lemonade. Didn't they have the Pog Juice here too? They?
Speaker 1:had Pog, yeah, and they just bring it to you continuously.
Speaker 2:Yes, and remind us what Pog Juice is Passion fruit, orange and guava juice. Yes, it is so good.
Speaker 1:So, so good. And they have a lot of other specialty cocktails, with some you know pretty cute names as well, just to kind of keep that African theming. And you have ciders and beers and wine as well. So that is the breakfast menu and again I've enjoyed the food. They did have some unique offerings. I was trying to pull up my picture again. I forgot what this certain thing was. I think it was called like millet or something like that. It almost reminded me a little bit of polenta, but a little different from that, but it was very good. They had some curried chicken dishes with rice. That was good, and again, carved ham, the zebra cake, coffee cake, so, and then there were some other unique items as well. So they did have a little bit of Africanrican dish choices, even at breakfast time. I think that way people, if they want to try and sample something. So and I remember that happening back in 2019 as well- yeah, because I think they want you to.
Speaker 2:Hey, this was good for breakfast. We need to come back for, like, dinner right lunch or dinner to you?
Speaker 1:a little bit, yeah, which makes sense, right? Yeah, so, but you know I thoroughly enjoyed it. Do we want to go ahead and talk about the characters?
Speaker 2:Well, talk about what we had. You can talk about what you had I just had. So I'm a basic breakfast guy, right? So I did have the simple waffles and just bacon and scrambled eggs. That's mainly all I eat for breakfast. I used to eat classic American breakfast and it was delicious. It's always going to be good.
Speaker 1:I don't think I've ever mm-hmm, it's kind of hard to well, you can make the eggs and be pretty bland right but I've always had just delicious breakfast here, so now yes well, and the boys, they did a little more of the traditionals but they also, like one of the boys, nolan, he got like some more fruits and pastries. Ryan loves croissants and things like that, so he, you know, they got a little bit more of that end of the buffet than we did, but they still ate some of the breakfast classics as well. But, yeah, the characters here it's a little more laid back.
Speaker 2:This is all you.
Speaker 1:But it is more laid back.
Speaker 2:Am I wrong? It is definitely a lot more laid back than your. What's the one in Contemporary? I'm going blank Mickey's Party.
Speaker 1:No, it's not Mickey's party, it's a chef. Mickey's, yeah so more laid back than chef Mickey's, more laid back than goofy's kitchen in California more laid back than Kate May, but we'll talk about that in a few weeks. Yes, but it you know the T, they do come to your table, you know, and they and they kind of linger as long as you're talking to them. You know, or you know they know not to necessarily force pictures on people that aren't standing up to get the pictures or that are interacting with them.
Speaker 2:We'll talk about that in a later episode. But here at Tesker House. Yes, yes, so they respect, you know, like they understand not everybody's going to want to hop up and get pictures.
Speaker 1:Some people might just want to keep on eating and just say hi, wave, and they move on. You know, like they understand, not everybody's going to want to hop up and get pictures. Some people might just want to keep on eating and just say hi, wave, and they move on, you know. So it is a more relaxing experience. But if you're talking to them and stuff, they'll stay with you for a couple of minutes and you meet Mickey Donald Daisy. What's it Goofy? Yeah, I was trying to remember if it was. Goofy or Pluton Goofy.
Speaker 2:And Minnie?
Speaker 1:No, no, minnie I don't think Minnie was here.
Speaker 2:Okay, so for someone who does not like character experiences and it's not that I don't like, I like seeing the characters, right. Right. Like I want to see the characters, I just don't want to interact with the characters. Yeah characters yeah, that's just me. Yeah, it's mickey donald, daisy and goofy, okay, and this I put up there with what's um topolinos terrace? Okay, yeah, I can as far as being tolerable for someone who does not like character buffets right it's not super loud. Their costumes are very unique only to Animal Kingdom.
Speaker 1:Right, they're in their safari gear and I just love it, and I think that's why you kind of might think that Minnie will be there too, but she's not. She does show up for a photo opportunity elsewhere in Animal Kingdom.
Speaker 2:At the meet and greet, yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah for the meet and greet, but she's not at the restaurant.
Speaker 2:So yes, it's very tolerable. They were very respectful. They could obviously tell I did not want to be bothered, but I was getting pictures of you. Ryan didn't want to be bothered either, but you and Nolan enjoy that stuff and I was taking pictures of y'all and they were very respectful of that and they did do a little dance, a little song, but it wasn't loud.
Speaker 1:Yeah, dance and little songs, but it wasn't loud. Yeah, it wasn't loud. And when we say they do a little song and dance, it's not all the time, I think, maybe once an hour or something like that, and it's not in your face, and it was very well done, I think.
Speaker 2:So this was again. This is the second time we've been here and I agree to it because it's a very nice, tolerable character experience.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and we did it, so our reservation was like at 10 am.
Speaker 1:It wasn't as crowded either at that point, right, and we literally like we had done this safari ride at like 930-ish, 940, something like that, and then walked over and checked in and got called back pretty much immediately. Yeah, over, uh, and checked in and got called back pretty much immediately. Yeah, and you know they make sure to you get like a autographed, pre-autographed card, uh, you know, for the characters that you're seeing, and that's really cute as well. We got to see mickey first, with him. At first I didn't stand up, but he still realized I wanted a picture, so he stood behind me, got a selfie, because I think some of y'all were at the buffet getting food, okay, because he came pretty quickly.
Speaker 1:And then Nolan came up with his food. He was patient, waited for him to put his plate down and then, you know, they hugged and took some pictures. And then Goofy. Goofy was next and you know, again, they spent as much time as you wanted. Daisy, she looks so cute in her outfit, uh. So yeah, just again, you know it's a, it's a chance to see them in unusual attire.
Speaker 2:yeah, and I will give this I will give this the zach stamp of approval. For people that don't like character dining buffets, this one's good. Yeah, you're going to be fine at this one.
Speaker 2:So, if your family are pressuring you to want to do one and you don't want to do one, suggest this. Everybody's going to love it, the food's good, the theming is on point, and maybe that's why I tolerate it, because I'm good with the theming here yeah, I think for you it is all about the theming and the fact that it's not all it's not screaming and yelling, they're not banging on things, they're not making you kiss your wife in front of everybody and trying to get pictures of it.
Speaker 2:You know like it's. It's not not that this is very chilled, laid back, good food I would definitely eat here again.
Speaker 1:Yes, now I do want to cover a little bit. I'm not going to read the lunch menu, just because I looked at the pricing for lunch and dinner and it's the same, so $62 per adult and $40 per child. Starters are breads and dips, such as naan breads and other breads with like tzatziki sauce and some other sauces, different salads. They have tandoori chicken, a certain marinated pork, green curry, shrimp, dorawat and braised beef tagine, and then for kids they have things such as meatballs, mac and cheese, chicken, broccoli, potatoes. They do offer plant-based offerings as well, and then they have some definitely some african sides spiced broccoli, south african spice, cauliflower curry and a few others. And then desserts include baby flamingo cupcakes, baby bee cupcakes, double chocolate zebra cookies. Wait, how did they make baby flamingo? Baby Flamingo Cupcakes, baby Bee Cupcakes, double Chocolate Zebra.
Speaker 2:Cookies. Wait, how did they make Baby Flamingo Cupcakes?
Speaker 1:The icing's probably got like a baby flamingo on it or something. Okay Mm-hmm. And then again tons of mocktails, non-alcoholic beverages I'm sure if you asked I would think they would probably do Pog Juice, but I don't know that for a fact. But it doesn't hurt to ask.
Speaker 2:I would hope so.
Speaker 1:Yes, and tons, especially cocktails, A lot of different margaritas it looks like A lot and quite a few martinis and mojitos and other mixed cocktail beverages. And again, wine, ciders, beer. So one of these days I want to try it.
Speaker 2:We'll go to dinner. Yeah, all right. So that brings us to Disney trivia. This was a true or false Was Did Tusker House used to be a quick service restaurant? And we talked all about that at the beginning. And it is true, it did used to be a quick service restaurant. And this week's winner is from X Sweeney. Yay, congratulations, this week's Disney trivia winner. So thank you so much for joining us on this episode. We will talk to y'all next week.
