Speaker 2:Thank you, everybody for joining us. Episode number 169.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:I was thinking 96, for some reason.
Speaker 1:We're like wow, Not quite Wow.
Speaker 2:We're talking about Beaches and Cream restaurant.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:We originally were not going to do a dining review on this, and then, after our experience, we decided that we should. Now we'll get to what we thought about it at the end of the episode.
Speaker 1:Correct.
Speaker 2:But what does Disney have to say about Beaches and Cream?
Speaker 1:All right, bring your appetite to this retro soda fountain where the burger is king and every day is Sunday.
Speaker 2:That's debatable.
Speaker 1:Hit the sweet spot. Treat your taste buds at Beaches and Cream Soda Shop at Disney's Beach Club Resort and revel in the nostalgia of the Atlantic seashore. Recall fond memories and make new ones as you sip on flavored sodas, malted milkshakes and more while listening to oldies on the classic jukebox. Slide into a beach ball bedecked booth and peruse a menu of fountain favorites, sweet surprises and hot off the grill items. Find yourself in burger heaven, or try the equally sublime grilled cheese and tomato soup. Chili cheese, tots and onion rings are among the other comfort classics offered.
Speaker 1:But the main event here is, of course, dessert. Find all your childhood favorites, plus some showstoppers like the Snickers sundae and the no Way Jose, a delectable creation with ice cream, peanut butter and hot fudge. For the ultimate experience, get a load of the kitchen sink, eight scoops of ice cream smothered in every topping we have. Plus, don't miss the popular souvenir milkshakes, even a few of the adult variety. A to-go menu of ice cream and beverages is also available, and you can even enjoy your goodies at a poolside table outside, overlooking storm along bay all right.
Speaker 2:So the history of beaches and cream soda shop. It opened in 1990 with disney's beach club resort and it reflects the same theming from the beach club of a seaside town, yes, modeled after. Cape May New. Jersey essentially Theming, draws inspiration from old-fashioned soda shops and diners from the 1950s, which diners are a big part of the food culture up in the Northeast.
Speaker 2:Okay, right, yes from things I've heard and seen on TV. The goal of Beaches and Cream is to offer a simple yet iconic American dining experience featuring classic American meals and desserts. In 2019, beaches and Cream underwent a significant renovation. Before the renovation, it was a very small seating area inside, so reservations were extremely hard to come by for Beaches and Cream. So the renovation added additional seating, making reservations easier to get, and it was a lot. We had not been in it before, so I don't know what it was a lot it was really.
Speaker 2:We had not been in it before so I don't know what it was like, but very spacious on the inside.
Speaker 1:Now, it is spacious, but but it is still on the smaller side a little bit like. I mean plenty of room, plenty of tables, but I could, I can't imagine. I guess what I'm trying to say is how small it was before, how small it was, yeah, yeah all right.
Speaker 2:So if you would like to book beaches and cream, you know to reach out to our sponsor, mainstream travel company. We use them for all of our disney and non-disney vacation needs. They can plan your walt disney world, disneyland disney cruise line adventures by disney alani and disneyland paris vacations. They can also plan hilton head island and vero beach disney resorts. And if you book Disneyland with Erica, she's going to throw a $100 gift card on that. It's her favorite park, trust me, whenever we're with her, we can't get her to shut up about it.
Speaker 1:Oh, it's her home park. She loves it, so keep that in mind if you're looking to book a Disneyland vacation.
Speaker 2:Go check them out wwwmainstreettravelcocom. They're on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. And again, my favorite thing I talk about it every single week you can call them 1-800-593-1262, Monday through Friday, 10 am 5 pm, Central Time. These are not agents that are working a day job and then doing this after. These are full-time agents in an office waiting to help you. Very professional. Again, call them 1-800-593-1262 monday through friday, 10 am 5 pm, central time.
Speaker 1:Tell them we, since you take advantage of those special offers, their services are completely free of charge yes, and again, I say it every time we don't have to keep up with the dates of when to make those dining reservations. It's taken care of for us. Just you know. A reminder a few days beforehand hey, is this what you're still looking at? And the days and the times, all right, and then it's done all right, so let's get to the menu of beaches and cream.
Speaker 2:Now this is a, not a. The food menu is not that extravagant no, it's not but there are some, some good items here there are.
Speaker 1:So are we going to review the whole menu before saying what we got?
Speaker 2:yeah, let's, let's go through that, not the whole menu. There's a ton of stuff here, but right so burgers?
Speaker 1:they have an angus beef burger comes with cheese, lettuce, tomato on a freshly baked bun. Served with choice of potato, tots, french fries or fresh fruit.
Speaker 2:Why can they not just call them tater tots? I know they're potato barrels, they're potato tots, I know. Just call them tater. Yeah, why do you, disney? Why do you have to be complicated with tater tots? They're potato barrels, they're tater tots. Just call them tater tots, please. I'm speaking on behalf of everybody.
Speaker 1:But that is one of the entrees. Now the price is $22. You also have a French dip sandwich toasted French roll, served with thinly sliced roast beef, swiss and au jus, topped with crispy fried onions. Served with choice of again potato tots, tater tots French fries or fresh fruit, and this is $20.
Speaker 1:I'm not going to read all the details of all of them, but you also have a cheddar, bacon, ranch chicken sandwich, beaches and cream grilled cheese. Now, this is with creamy tomato soup. You can add bacon or ham $5 each and you can substitute the soup for the previous sides mentioned. And they also have a Reuben sandwich. Or, if you need to go the route of an Impossible Burger, there's an option too, and all of these are priced anywhere from $16 to $22.
Speaker 1:Now your sides. We've mentioned some already, but they have onion rings. You can get a side of the tomato bisque. They have onion rings. You can get a side of the tomato bisque, cheese and bacon tots, chili and cheese tots, chili, a bowl of chili. And then for desserts, you have brownie a la mode, strawberry shortcake, cookie fries with dipping sauce, your kids menu. You have grilled chicken sandwich, macaroni and cheese, cheeseburger, hot dog, turkey sandwich, and you can have sides such as different types of fruit, and you can get a mickey mouse sundae. Then they have a lot of specialty shakes. Do you want to share some of these?
Speaker 1:no, because I do not like shakes okay, they have a pumpkin pie shake, chocolate brownie shake, a mickey confetti shake, strawberry mini shake. Then they have shakes and soda. So malts and shakes, frozen sunshine, which? This is? Rainbow sherbert, vanilla ice cream and ice cream and seltzer blended to perfection, topped with whipped cream and a candied orange slice ice cream soda. They have your root beer and coke floats.
Speaker 1:Now sundaes on the beach. They have fudge, mudslide, old-fashioned sundae with two scoops and toppings can include marshmallows, strawberry, pineapple, peanut butter, hot fudge, caramel, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, toasted almonds, cherry, extra toppings. They have old-fashioned sundaes three scoops, no Way, jose. So that's a peanut butter and hot fudge delight featuring chocolate and vanilla ice cream, peanut butter and chocolate morsels, whipped cream and a cherry. Then another one they're known for Snickers Sundae three scoops of vanilla ice cream smothered in hot fudge, marshmallow topping and Snickers bar pieces topped with whipped cream, chopped peanuts and a cherry. And then, of course, that kitchen sink serves four. It is priced at $38, and it has scoops of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip topped with hot fudge, peanut butter, snickers pieces, fresh baked brownie smothered in every additional topping. We have Also available Chocolate Lovers or Neapolitan.
Speaker 2:They also do a whole can of whipped cream on it too.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and then Ice Cream Creations you can get double hand scooped ice cream, waffle cone, sugar cone, souvenir shakes. And then they have some non-alcoholic beverages, hard floats and shakes. Some of those hard ones are Bailey's Sundae, s'more shakes, stout Float, Classic Root Beer Float, Tropical Sunrise Float, Grasshopper Float. And then they have some beers and seltzers and wine and cocktails.
Speaker 2:Okay. So what did we have? I had the bacon cheeseburger in tater tots. I added bacon to it they can do that and it was fine. Yeah, it was just fine. Wasn't bad. No, didn't stand out, it was just fine. Yeah, ryan had the grilled cheese and tomato soup and he said this was better than Jolly Holiday's grilled cheese and soup.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I don't know. I took a bite of it and I don't know it was good, but something about jolly holidays. I just it's just because you're in disneyland yeah and you're sitting outside in the original hub I guess, maybe that's it maybe I don't know, but ryan did enjoy, I mean, and it was good the bite I took um, but I still personally like the one in dis better.
Speaker 2:I will say it was better than my cheeseburger.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, nolan had the kid's cheeseburger and fruit.
Speaker 1:Mm-hmm.
Speaker 2:And then, what did you have?
Speaker 1:I had bacon cheeseburger and I'm trying to remember I think I got the onion rings.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you did, you did the onion rings.
Speaker 1:And the onion rings were pretty good. They weren't like spectacular, like the best ones ever, kind of thing, but they were pretty good. The cheeseburger bacon cheeseburger yeah, it wasn't anything special, we've had better at other places.
Speaker 2:It was fine. Yeah, it was fine yeah and since we were on the dining plan, we got desserts too, and I got the cookie sticks even though the server was trying to talk him out of it well, nolan wanted the cookie sticks and I don't get desserts, so I was like I'll just get them and nolan get what? Something else that he would like. So I got the cookie sticks and the server told us not to get them.
Speaker 1:But I I got them just because I didn't really care well, we were like he wants to try them and you were thinking nothing else. You can eat the dessert. He's getting off the kids menu and right so no one.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and the the server was not wrong for telling us to not get the cookie sticks.
Speaker 1:It tasted like cardboard with a couple of chocolate chips in them I don't even know if I tasted the chocolate I took up like we all took a bite of one and it was not good we're not just saying it tastes like cardboard, just to say it because it wasn't good. No, it legit tasted like cardboard it was not good there was no flavor whatsoever.
Speaker 1:You could see the chocolate chips in it, but I don't think I tasted them at all, and so I think anytime a server says that I wouldn't necessarily get that if the server tells you not to get something, don't't get it.
Speaker 2:Cookie fries with dipping sauce. Whatever they're cookie sticks, they're cardboard sticks. That's what they are. They're cardboard sticks with dipping sauces.
Speaker 1:Yeah, there was no cookie flavor to it whatsoever.
Speaker 2:In my opinion, it was completely artificial, 100% and just flavorless. Yes, yeah.
Speaker 1:I had the strawberry shortcake. Now I thought that that was really good. Would I get it again? Possibly there might be some other things I would try on a different day if we went back. But it was, it was good, and it's just your vanilla shortcake, strawberry compote, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. So I mean, I mean again, nothing like out of ordinary from a strawberry shortcake, but it was good and then Ryan had the brownie a la mode, did he like I don't remember he?
Speaker 1:liked it. It was, um, you know, a gooey, chewy brownie, hot fudge, vanilla ice cream topped, topped with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles, and uh, yeah, I mean, he seemed to like it. I don't think he was like, oh my gosh, this is the best, but he liked it yeah, and then nolan again had the mickey mouse sundae yeah, so it was like two oreo cookies for the ears, yes, and then like a scoop of vanilla ice cream yes, so britney, what?
Speaker 2:I'm gonna save mine for the last. What did you think of beaches and cream?
Speaker 1:well, like when we first got there, I did like the all the pictures they had on the wall.
Speaker 1:Very well themed Of the different Disney characters sitting at like soda shops or the beach and things like that. I really liked that theming and seeing like the jukebox and you know the setup of it being like a diner and stuff. So the theming I think is very on par. The theming, I think, is very on par. But I was let down a little bit when because because when someone orders the kitchen sink dessert that feeds four people for that thirty eight dollars, they do like make a A big thing of it. But but it was a lot quieter than I thought it would be. It wasn't all the bells and whistles that I thought would happen when people ordered it. I thought it was going to be a little more flashy and loud but it was just. I mean, they still said something but it wasn't like hey, you know. So that part. I know we don't like loud and stuff, but I was expecting it can I correct the statement you made?
Speaker 2:yes, they made a little thing about it, not a big thing about it. Oh sorry, I was expecting it. Can I correct the statement you made?
Speaker 1:Yes, they made a little thing about it, not a big thing about it. Oh sorry, I was saying I thought they would make a big thing.
Speaker 2:I know, but they made a little thing. There wasn't a big thing, it was a little thing.
Speaker 1:Yes, exactly.
Speaker 2:It was a small little bitty ruckus.
Speaker 1:Yeah, a little bit yeah, but I thought there'd be like the there's lights on the ceiling that I thought would be like flashing, more like alarm lights and and that they would really celebrate and sing or bang the pans or something you know. And it wasn't like that. The food definitely not our best experience. You know. I think you, if you're a big sweet tooth person, I think that's what you go here for and try some of the things that we didn't try, such as the shakes and sundaes and things like that. Because, again, the, the burgers we had, they weren't anything spectacular. We've had better at other Disney restaurants. But you know, if you're staying here or you're in the area, you know, and you want to give it a try, to see the theming and have some of these specialty desserts, then you know why not, but we'll, in my opinion, do. I think we as a family would go here again, probably not.
Speaker 2:Okay, so let me give a little bit of history on why we did eat here and why we unfortunately did, and I'm going to say, waste a dining credit here. So we had originally had this booked because our last day we were going to just enjoy Stormalong Bay all day long. That was the goal on our last day was from the time it opened until we had to go to the airport. Just chill at the pool, and we were like, let's go to Beaches and Cream, because whenever you first start hearing about Disney, beaches and Cream is one of the restaurants that comes up quite a bit. Yeah.
Speaker 2:So I think number one expectations were high for this place, because it's just something you always hear about, when you hear about oh you got to go to Beaches and Cream. Oh, you got to go to Beaches and Cream.
Speaker 2:Oh, you've got to go to Beaches and Cream. So, first, beaches and cream oh, you got to go to the beach. And then cream oh, you've got to go to the beaches and cream. So first, expectations were high. Two we originally were not going to use a dining credit for this restaurant. We're going to pay out of pocket because the prices are not expensive here right so, but we canceled.
Speaker 2:We were our hollywood studios night. We were going to eat at sci-fi dine-in. We've already eaten there. We were trying to eat at different places we haven't eaten at before. So we canceled that dining reservation to eat at ABC, commissary, which I do not regret doing.
Speaker 1:No no.
Speaker 2:ABC Commissary, was it?
Speaker 1:was good.
Speaker 2:Far exceeded expectations that I had. That grilled cheese sandwich was amazing, or buffalo grilled cheese.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it was a buffalo grilled cheese. Yeah, it was a buffalo grilled cheese, it was delicious.
Speaker 2:So I was like, well, we'll just use our dining credit at beaches and cream, right. So that was the backstory here. Now when we got there we were. Another reason we wanted to get it we didn't. Why we wanted to eat here is we didn't want to get out of our pool stuff then change and go to like the yachtsman steakhouse or like l and compass, because we would have had to change and it's not fancy clothes but not pool clothes either right, you know yeah.
Speaker 2:So we didn't want to waste time and do that when we could be enjoying that time at at the pool. So we thought this would be an easy, quick lunch.
Speaker 1:It was not quick no, it was not quick.
Speaker 2:It took our server and it wasn't even that busy. It took our server at least 10 minutes just to get a drink order. Now, I've been a server before. I try to be lenient with stuff like that, but I have expectations from when I was a server, of when I should at least acknowledge a table. Hey.
Speaker 2:I'm busy, I'll take a second. I'll get right back to you If they do that. I try to like be very lenient with that, but we go 10 minutes and not even get acknowledged. I have a problem with that. Yeah. So it ended up taking almost an hour and a half for this whole meal to be done. Right. Which I thought was absurd. So first of all, that was another thing.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and I'd forgotten about that part.
Speaker 2:Oh, I remember that part.
Speaker 1:Well. But now that you're saying it, I remember Sorry, sorry, I didn't get a lot of sleep last night due to one of our dogs. But what he's saying is true, you know, and like I'll be the first one to get impatient, waiting for even a drink order. But I'm kind of the same way, like okay, well, they at least said hi, be with you in a minute. Let me get this table's order, then I'll be over, something like that. But there was nothing.
Speaker 2:Communication is key. Yes, if you're laughing, if you don't even acknowledge us. We have gotten up out of restaurants after five minutes with no one even saying hi, right, yeah, that's just courtesy.
Speaker 1:That's when it's like not busy now, if it's obvious like this place is packed, like we will wait longer than that. You know, five minutes isn't really anything when a place is obviously packed, but at the time there were several empty tables around us right, yeah, so high expectations yeah didn't get acknowledged for 10 minutes.
Speaker 2:Number three I don't like sweets. Yeah, so there's three things for me going against this restaurant. And the food was just fine. Again it wasn't bad, it was just fine. So when I'm trying to think about what I thought of this restaurant, I'm trying to take my preconceived notions away from it and look at it at what it is.
Speaker 1:Right, and that's why I mentioned the theming this is what it is.
Speaker 2:It's themed really really well. Don't come here for the food, do not, is it fine? Yes, definitely. Don't use a dining credit for this. You're going to waste your dining credit. I think that's.
Speaker 1:What I'm upset most about is that we wasted a dining credit when we had the yachtsman steakhouse and ellen compass right, right there, but, as you said, the day that we did this though it, it fit for what we were needing but by the time we sat down got our food and been back.
Speaker 2:We could have gone to the room, put just regular clothes on and eaten at ellen compass, gone back to our room and been back at the pool. Yeah, that is true, and had better food, yes, but here's what it is. This is what you're going to come to this restaurant for. You're coming here for the shakes, you're coming here for the experience and you're coming here for the Sundays. I don't really like any of that stuff.
Speaker 1:So therefore, there is no reason for me to ever come back to this restaurant ever again, right, I think you know, we, we it's good that we experienced it. Yes, you know. So we can talk about it, obviously on the show, and just you know, not have that wonder, oh, I wonder how it is, I wonder how the burgers are and that kind of thing. And you know, and I'm going back through my pictures and you know, looking at the kids burger too, like that patty, it didn't really cover the bread.
Speaker 2:Um now, it was fine. It's not a bad burger, but it was just fine yeah, and now the grilled cheese and tomato soup.
Speaker 1:I mean, it was probably the best out of all I would agree to that and it is that creamier tomato bisque, for sure it's. It doesn't even really look like tomato soup when they first bring it was good.
Speaker 2:Yep, jolly holiday is better though, yeah, but we don't have that here and uh yeah.
Speaker 1:But yeah, the burgers weren't anything spectacular. You know the chocolate, what was it a la mode? Um, the brownie a la mode, brownie a la mode. It it was good, but I think it maybe had just a few too many sprinkles on it. It was like very covered in sprinkles okay in sprinkles, um, but again. The strawberry shortcake was was good, but again a lot of sprinkles, so just a lot of sugar here, but it was good.
Speaker 2:I just I don't. I'm not a big sugar guy, I'm just not. And now talking about the kitchen sink yes, this is the famous kitchen sink. I would rather die than do the kitchen sink.
Speaker 1:Well, I'm one Like. I do like ice cream, but I have to be in the mood for it. But once it really starts melting, I'm done. And so that much ice cream melting like I just definitely would not get money's worth out of it, I would rather die.
Speaker 2:So they put eight scoops of ice cream, all the toppings, a whole thing of whipped cream, and it melts within 10 minutes. So you're basically eating ice cream soup yeah, but that's why it's not appetizing to me whatsoever.
Speaker 1:It's for four people, so hopefully it can prevent that melting.
Speaker 2:Yes, but we've seen videos of people eating that and it turns into ice cream soup yeah, and it's just none of that. If you like it, great, I'm not hating on this whatsoever, it's just not for me. None of this stuff, none of the sunday stuff, is I just do not do sugar.
Speaker 2:Well, when we went to the festival of the arts and we got a lot of sugar items, I, he didn't feel good I did not feel good and I didn't even have that much, like we were waiting in line and I could feel my blood sugar spike up like I got really dizzy yeah and so me and sugar, I will have a little bit. I just cannot do it. I know I'm like one of those weird people that can't do it.
Speaker 1:You can have like a half thing of oreos, though, and be just fine hey, but that's why I like sorbets.
Speaker 2:yes, sorbets aren't as sugary, they have more natural flavors in them. But again, even then I'll just have like one scoop though.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that is true, and yes, he is a big sorbet, or even sherbert, but sorbet more so is not as sugary. But if you were somewhere and they had ice cream or sherbert, you would get the sherbert.
Speaker 2:But, if you're looking for a fun environment to get a dessert then this is a good place, not the cookie fries just don't get the cookie fries. But you want like a shake or a sundae, then this is a good place for that.
Speaker 1:I'm not trying to hate on that for that and I think, like for me, as far as maybe me by myself, I wouldn't go here for a meal. I might would just go here for a shake, maybe, but I wouldn't be able to eat, have the whole thing.
Speaker 1:I know how I am with that stuff, but you know, I might even you can't do a full shake no, but I might would go back one day and get a shake and have like half of one or something maybe you and nolan, yeah, take a break from epcot, yeah, and go out there or something no, no, we're not taking a break from epcot unless it's absolutely miserably hot, but we like Epcot too much right now. Okay, well, I'm just saying like.
Speaker 2:This is a fun restaurant, yes, and for what it? This is a place to go get a dessert. Do not get the food here, it's fine. I mean, if you want to, it's fine but don't have high expectations, do not have high expectations. Definitely do not waste a dining credit on this place. Pay out of pocket. Use your dining credit at ellen, compass or the yachtsman. There's much better food which I we should have done that oh, I plan on going back we will be going back.
Speaker 2:Uh, so again, is it a bad restaurant? No, I'm just mad that we wasted dining credit. Go here for desserts, yeah, if you're into that, I'm not not, but if you are, this is a fun, cool place for that.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:So would you agree?
Speaker 1:Yeah, I agree, I agree for sure the theming, you know all of that. I mean seriously, the theming is on point it is well-themed, yes, all right.
Speaker 2:So Disney trivia Not a lot of like history or stuff I could find about it. So just what is the name of the famous dessert at Beaches and Cream? It is the Kitchen Sink. And from X this week is Sweeney. Congratulations, sweeney, you are this week's winner. Next week we're going to be talking about the rites of passages for Walt Disney World. You know them, we know them, and if you don't know them, we're going to go on a crash course next week. Some are good, some not so good, but if you've been more than once, then I think everybody can agree. We've experienced all of these, would you agree?
Speaker 1:probably so we haven't gone through it all yet. Well, I mean like what we're going to talk about.
