Hello and welcome to Circular Park's podcast, episode number 187. Today we are talking about first-timers must-eats in Hollywood studios. There is far too much to see and do. We are here to help guide you through, but before we do that we must talk Disney merch. This week DisneyStorecom. They have a few new items focused on Cinderella, because it has been 75 years since Cinderella first came out. So one of the items is a Cinderella 75th anniversary Dooney and Burke crossbody bag for $248. Very classy, features Cinderella and a few other unique characters and you know it's just super cute. Light blue kind of takes over the whole bag in like a tan color and again, it's just very well done. It's not too much in your face. So that is one item off of this new Cinderella line that's celebrating the 75th anniversary. And then when you're on their website, you will see plenty of other items as well, from shirts to Lego sets, coffee mugs and more. So go check that out.
Speaker 2:Thank you, everybody for joining us. Episode number 187. We're continuing with our series of first-timer must-eats in the parks. This week we're in Hollywood Studios, yes, and there's some unique places to eat here that are very unique to Hollywood Studios only, Correct. And now some of these. You're not going to be able to eat at all these places your first time.
Speaker 2:No, no but this should give you an idea of maybe where you want to start looking at to eat at and what's going to be good for your family, and I think we've got a good list here.
Speaker 1:Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2:So, first on the list, this is the iconic Hollywood Studios. This is classic 1930s glam. Hollywood is the Hollywood Brown Derby. Now, this is based on the original Hollywood Brown Derby from Hollywood, and this is where the Cobb salad was born. So, brittany, what do you think about Hollywood Brown Derby?
Speaker 1:The food was good. To be honest, I was a little let down, though, with the overall experience, but I also think it was when we went. It was in 2021. Certain things hadn't come back to its fullest yet after the pandemic and everything. And the way they presented the Cobb salad isn't the usual, but I mean, was it good? Yes, I mean, you have your roasted turkey, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, blue cheese, avocado, classic dressing, chicken. I got mine with chicken or you can get it with shrimp, and it was priced at 28. Again, good, a lot of food, but it's all about. It was known for how they bring it and present it to you and mix it up in front of you, and I didn't get that experience. But I think it was because of when we went.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and I got the filet. It was fine. It was a Disney filet, nothing to write home about. You're really paying for the experience here, right, and this is signature dining, so it's two dining credits. I think that would be a waste to use dining credits here.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:Especially when the Cobb salad's $28, $35 with chicken and $38 with shrimp. But here is a little cheat if you will, you can get the same menu and sit outside at the lounge and not have to make a dining reservation, and all that.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:And I've heard this is what most people people that want to eat the food but don't want to get the full experience this is what they do, so I think next time we do it, maybe we go to the lounge.
Speaker 1:Possibly yeah.
Speaker 2:Instead of doing the full restaurant.
Speaker 1:No, don't get me wrong, it was very nice inside. You know, different types of memorabilia and pictures and all that was really cool to see and all that was really cool to see.
Speaker 2:but I just I think I I was personally just let down a little bit because of, you know, I didn't get the full salad experience yeah, and that was disappointing to me too, because when we first sat down, our server was like now we're going to slow you down here, help you relax a little bit, and which is fine, but then, once they brought the food out, we never saw them again right, it was like what yeah, yeah until it was time to pay they didn't come and check on us no more drink refills.
Speaker 1:I thought I was a little off put by that right and it could have just been that day and again the time frame with everything from 2020. You know that still was going on in 2021. I'm not sure.
Speaker 2:However, this is an iconic Hollywood Studios restaurant that, as a first timer, this is a place you're probably going to want to go eat at, just for the experience. Also, pre-covid, you could dine with an Imagineer here.
Speaker 1:And that would have been.
Speaker 2:That would have been amazing if you could still do that If they could still do that, but they never brought it back. They never brought it back.
Speaker 1:And again, you know it was still a cool experience. You are going to hear a lot of people say, oh, you need to try Hollywood Brown Derby, whether you go about it with the reservations or go to the lounge. You know it is something to try. But there are a few other places we're going to talk about as well.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so where are we going to next?
Speaker 1:Next is 50s Primetime Cafe.
Speaker 2:All right, tell us about 50s Primetime.
Speaker 1:So 50s Primetime. You know everything about it is from the 50s, From the decor, a lot of the food offerings is what was traditional a little bit more back then as well. It is what was traditional a little bit more back then as well. The. But the booths you sit in and everything around it like it reminds you of, like, possibly, your grandparents or great grandparents, depending on your age, like their furniture. They may have had the old TVs they had old like TV shows playing on some of them, the curtains, you curtains, just everything. They made the kitchen areas and stuff look like a kitchen would have in the 1950s and the appliances and all of that. So it's definitely spot on when it comes to theming and the food was pretty good.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think the food was pretty good too. Speaking of little trinkets and stuff, I saw quite a few items in there that my grandmother had in her house. I was like, hey, I know that.
Speaker 1:And little pieces of furniture here and there, same for me and certain family members. And now, to go along with all of this, your servers now they may come off, be prepared, especially if you are there with little kids.
Speaker 2:If you're introverts, this may not be the restaurant for you.
Speaker 1:You might feel a little awkward. Yes, because they're all about like use your manners, don't put your elbows on the table. And they, you know this is the 1950s, so they don't know what cell phones are. So walkie talkie away, or put that box. You're on away, you know, and um, just kind of pick on you a little bit here and there, like an aunt or uncle would yeah, and so the this is a sit-down restaurant and it would be one dining credit.
Speaker 2:If you're using a dining credit, I do not think this is a good use of a dining credit, because the prices here are not that expensive.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:The fried chicken is $27. The sampling of mom's favorites, which is what I got, is $32. It is fried chicken, pot roast and traditional meatloaf. I'm not a big meatloaf fan, but the fried chicken and the pot roast were delicious and that's $32. Again, way below what your dining credit is being valued at. Even if you get a drink and dessert, you're still not getting the value out of it. But you're coming here for the experience. The food is just, it's comfort food.
Speaker 1:It is, and I think what Zach ordered is the way to go, because you are getting a sampling of all of those things. You know, I I think that particular day I was craving more of like pot roast and so I got the pot roast, which was a bigger serving of pot roast with garlic, mashed potatoes, brown gravy garnished with carrot, celery and onions.
Speaker 1:But if you get the sampling, you're getting a little portion of that, as well, for four dollars more, for four dollars more, and you're still getting to try the fried chicken and the meatloaf and it's going to fill you up.
Speaker 2:Yes, and this is also, uh, their lounge area. It's called the tune-in lounge. This is where you can get the peanut butter and jelly milkshake. Now we're going to try it. On our last trip we did not get to it, but this is a good. If you're looking for a unique dining experience with good comfort food, this is going to be the spot to go. I don't know if we'll go back here. It wasn't quite. I, our server, wasn't that into it, and even if they were, I don't know if I would have been like oh, we've got to go back there right, you know, like it was good, but yeah, it's not a, you know.
Speaker 1:Oh, I can't wait to come back now the next place we're going to.
Speaker 2:I do want to go back, because the experience was awesome the experience was worth it, yes.
Speaker 1:So the next place is sci-fi dine-in theater and it is what it is. It's a it's a dine-in and the booths you sit in are like you're sitting outside in a car, like dine-ins used to be. And the food overall the food was really good. I think my entree I would get something different, but overall the food was good. But it's the experience.
Speaker 2:You feel like you're outside at the movies and you're watching old sci-fi so to go a little bit deeper into the storyline here, yes, you're at an outdoor theater like a dine-in theater. It's actually when you walk in if you notice there's like wooden um framing set up and all that stuff. You're actually walking into a movie set of a drive-in theater because you're at Hollywood, right, everything's a movie set, right. So that's into the original story is. This is a set that you're walking onto or walking into.
Speaker 2:But anyway, it's classic Americana food burgers, chicken, salad, sandwiches, cheese, barbecue burgers, fries, onion rings, all that stuff. Is this going to be a great value for your dining credit? No, but the experience is great. I loved it very, if very relaxing if you're wanting an hour to an hour and a half of just decompressed time. It's kind of dark in there. The movie, like the little clips, are really good walt you get to see walt in there and the burger was good yeah, it was a really good burger. Is it the best?
Speaker 1:no, but it was really good and we got the onion rings for an appetizer. They were big, you know, quite a few of them, I mean family of four ate off of them. Just fine for an appetizer in the, and they were priced at 11 dollars. Uh, you had gotten the burger, did I think Ryan got the burger too.
Speaker 2:We all got burgers. Me, ryan and Nolan all got burgers. $25 for the adults Okay.
Speaker 1:I couldn't remember if Nolan got chicken.
Speaker 2:The kid burgers are Well. Maybe Ryan and Nolan got something different, because I don't see a burger on the kid's menu. Yeah, there's burgers there. Maybe he got the macaroni and cheese.
Speaker 1:He either got the mac and cheese or chicken bites, but you know, and either one of those is $12.50 or $11.50. I had the chicken salad but not the chicken salad sandwich. They gave you another option as well. That's not listed on the menu. If you don't want it like on a multigrain croissant and want it on a wrap, they can do it in a wrap, and so I did that and it was. It was still good, don't get me wrong. It was, but I think maybe that particular chicken salad is meant to be on a croissant.
Speaker 2:Um, but I think if I go back I would probably get a burger okay, yeah, yeah, I really so if your family's more introverted, this may be the better way to go.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:Because you got the servers. But you can chill. You need a little break from the kids. Put them in the front, you and mom can sit in the back. Let them kind of be there and you be you, and it's a good, relaxing experience.
Speaker 1:Yes, I really thoroughly enjoy it, and we didn't get like any of the shakes or sundaes or anything, but a lot of tables around us were and they looked good, really good.
Speaker 2:Yes, all right. Next on the list isn't a sit-down restaurant, but you do well, you don't need a reservation, you can walk up. But recommend sorry, reservations are highly recommended and we're going to go to Galaxy's Edge with Oga's Cantina. Yes, highly recommend this. If you don't even like Star Wars, doesn't matter, this place is so cool. You got DJ Rex in there spinning the music. It's such a unique themed lounge bar area that I think is a must do for your first time going.
Speaker 1:Yes, I agree. Like again, you don't have to be huge on Star Wars or know anything about Star Wars. It's a great experience, just the music, just everything. And the drinks are so unique as well. Yes, so you have drinks such as the Fuzzy Tauntauntaun and it kind of makes your lips tingle and feel numb, for a little bit.
Speaker 2:Yes, I did have this and that's what it does for it's. It's cool yeah, you know I know I didn't get it again no, but it's.
Speaker 1:It's cool to experience. There's a few other drinks that do special things, whether it looks like, you know, like dry ice, like kind of smoky a little, yeah, the dry ice will do that.
Speaker 2:I like the jet juice for 18 bucks. It's maker's mark bourbon, anchos reyes, chili liqueur, pomegranate liqueur, white grape juice and lemon juice. It's. I'm a bourbon guy and this is a good. I like this drink.
Speaker 1:It's really good yeah and you always get the auto rim, which is basically the margarita yes, now I've had, I've tried the fuzzy tontine and I think I've tried the best spin fizz possibly yeah, you said that one was too sweet for you yeah, but the outer rim has been my go-to ever since I tried that one. So, and again, it's like zach said, it's like a margarita, but it's really good and our youngest, nolan, likes to hyperdrive.
Speaker 2:It's powerade mountain berry blast, white cranberry juice, black cherry puree and sprite. And then our oldest, ryan, and our youngest Nolan likes to hyperdrive. It's Powerade Mountain Berry Blast, White Cranberry Juice, Black Cherry Puree and Sprite. And then our oldest, Ryan, likes to carbon freeze, which is Powerade Lemon, Lime, Wild, Strawberry, Blueberry and Green Apple Popping Pearls. The carbon freeze is the one that has the dry ice in it and it makes the popping pearls go up and down it and stuff like that.
Speaker 1:So that's pretty cool, cool. And they have several other options that are without alcohol as well.
Speaker 2:Yes, so pretty good. And then they do have, uh, several beers on tap here. The one that is you can only get in galaxy's edge is the gold squadron lager, and I've had it several times. It is really really good, and the snacks they do have added they've added snacks here. They did not have good snacks before, but now that cheese roll, I think, is the same thing that we had in Disneyland.
Speaker 1:That's what I'm wondering. But then this other thing has me interested too.
Speaker 2:Okay, the flatbread.
Speaker 1:So before they only had like a Ooh chorizo beef. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. So before they only had like pork cracklings kind. I'm saying so before they only had like pork cracklings kind of like Pork cracklings, no, but what's the other word for them?
Speaker 2:Pork rinds yes, thank you that. And like it was like lunchable, yeah, it was like pork rinds and roasted meats and cheese, but it wasn't.
Speaker 1:Wasn't good, wasn't good, and then they had like a snack mix with the spice dip, but people are like nah. But if these other items are similar to what we had when we were out in Disneyland, then we may be spending a lot more time here, because they have this cheese roll that says it's a spice dusted pretzel bun stuffed with herbed cheese in a dipping sauce. Then they also have a thruster roasted bantha flatbread which is non-flatbread topped with spiced chorizo beef and a four cheese blend. So those have my attention, yeah.
Speaker 2:All right. So now we're going to move to quick service restaurants and there's three here that you may want to try. Number one, I think, is backlot express, because this is old school mgm hollywood studios. Yeah, there is a lot of old memorabilia here, a lot of old pictures. They've taken a lot of stuff out of here, but if you go and look in there and kind of take some time and walk around and look at the pictures, you'll see some pictures of Eisner and some really good stuff. So remember in who Framed Roger Rabbit, when they were driving the Toon cab, the vehicle that they had made to film that actual screen use was in there. It's not there anymore.
Speaker 2:But the pictures are still there, though, where it was, so I think this is just old school MGM.
Speaker 1:Hollywood.
Speaker 2:Studios. You got to go check it out. In my opinion, yeah, it's been a little bit, since we've eaten here, but I think for that aspect as a first timer, would be a cool place to sit or go eat yeah, I think we went like our first or second trip.
Speaker 2:It's been a long time, but you know, the prices are are decent and mobile order mobile order and this is where you're going to get your burgers and chicken tenders and stuff. But they also have some more unique items. They have a cuban sandwich, a teriyaki chicken bowl and a southwest uh salad with chicken and a smoked pulled pork burger burger. Yeah, uh, they're your typical burgers and chicken strips. I have not had any of the new items, but I have heard that they are good.
Speaker 1:I have too. And then for sides, I mean you can get your french fries, or you can get french fries with cheese sauce.
Speaker 2:They got buffalo fries, and then they have buffalo fries too.
Speaker 1:So you know, again a little twist on some things yeah.
Speaker 2:And we will be coming back here again for snacks, okay, so keep that in mind. Another place that is kind of old school mgm grand hollywood studios is abc commissary. This has been here a long, long time and this is like you're in, the commissary of abc studios right and we just recently went here and I wish we'd gone here sooner they have.
Speaker 2:After covid they completely revamped the menu here and, oh my yeah, it is so good. You had I had. Well, where'd he? This may be the most perfect grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had. It is grilled sourdough toasted with buffalo chicken, monterey provolone cheddar and cream cheese, served with a side of buffalo sauce and your choice of side. It's creamy. It's just got that buffalo flavor. It's a little bit spice on it, but not too much. This is the perfect sandwich in my opinion.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so good, Ryan got it too. Ryan got it too. He really liked it.
Speaker 2:Yes, we devoured them, and they also have healthier options as well. I forgot what you got.
Speaker 1:That's what I was trying, because I know I had debated between these two and now I'm sitting here, right was it that? Or was it the mediterranean salad with chicken?
Speaker 2:I don't know, we were so tired by this point anyway, they have shrimp tacos. They have pork, carnegie pork, carnitas tacos and a mediterranean salad, and it for 12.99, 11.99, you're not going to beat those prices no it's. It's really good.
Speaker 1:I think it was the shrimp tacos they were really good.
Speaker 2:It steamed well.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:You know it's like old school Hollywood studios, so I think this is another great option for a first timer.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, for sure. And again, like the prices. And you know, don't let that like buffalo chicken grilled cheese, throw you off. It's not like super spicy or anything, uh, and so yeah you took a bite of mine too it was good because, well, y'all were like oh yeah, so let me try a little bite, so good all right.
Speaker 2:Last quick service that I think a first timer would, we think a first timer would enjoy, is docking bay seven food and cargo. Now this is in galaxy's. This is a quick service restaurant there and y'all have not eaten there. But I have Because the menu here is definitely unique.
Speaker 1:Like I would be fine with it. I just don't know about the boys.
Speaker 2:Trust me, they would be fine. The prices here make this a very good value for your quick service dining credit, because they are more expensive. But you're getting better quality food here as well. So I had the Andorian fried chicken tipyip. It's crispy chicken served with macaroni and cheese and roasted harvest vegetables. It's $16.29. They don't use chicken breast. This is not a chicken breast, this is a chicken thigh. Much more flavor, much juicier. So good, so delicious. The theming in here is definitely on point with Galaxy's Edge. The Kashuk beef skewer looks good. The Batuan beef and crispy tapato looks delicious as well. That's $18.99. So you're definitely getting a good value for your dining credit, your quick service credit, here.
Speaker 1:Right, I might. Would try the I don't know how to say it.
Speaker 2:What is?
Speaker 1:it Persianad hot chicken tipyip.
Speaker 2:Sounds about right.
Speaker 1:So crispy chicken glazed in a spicy chipotle sauce and served with white rice and a relish of sweet corn and some other things too Plantains and cilantro and peppers. I might, would try that.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and they have the fried chicken tipyip for the kids too, and it's served with macaroni and cheese and roasted vegetables. No one likes that stuff, he would be fine here.
Speaker 1:He'd at least eat the chicken.
Speaker 2:He's picky with his mac and cheese, but yeah, it was for like a fried chicken at a quick service place. This is the best I've had. It was so good and the theming here is on point for galaxy really great theming I I do. Really like this place a lot right uh, so we're gonna move on to snacks now. Yay, uh, britney, this one's all you, me and nolan, I wouldn't. I can't say this one oh my goodness I can't say it.
Speaker 1:Oh my goodness I can't the jack jack num num I can't, I can't say so you can get this at the market in Hollywood Studios it's over in like the Pixar Plaza area and it is just this really big chocolate chip cookie with like chocolate chips and big chocolate chunks in it and it is so good. Definitely something I think you need to split at least with one other person, because it can be a bit rich and sweet, but it's good, it so good. Definitely something I think you need to split at least with one other person, because it can be a bit rich and sweet, but it's good, it's good. So if you like chocolate chips, you have a sweet tooth. This could be a snack for you.
Speaker 2:It is a very good cookie. I'm not again, not big on sweets, so I took like one bite of it. But I will say the one in California Adventure was much better. I thought so too. It took like one bite of it. But I will say the one in california adventure was much better.
Speaker 1:I thought so too, but null was softer, null and light, the one at hollywood studios better. But yeah, I think and I don't know if it was because of the time of day too because we got one of the first batches, like the first ones when we were in disneyland and dca okay, so probably yeah that could have made the difference the other ones have been sitting underneath heat lamps for a bit yeah, because it was a lot later in the day. Yeah, yeah, well there you go.
Speaker 2:All right, what's next for snacks? Oh, this one's good. So ronto roasters back in galaxy's edge this is considered a quick service kiosk, but this is a snack too.
Speaker 1:I'm considering it a snack yeah, it depends on how hungry you are.
Speaker 2:But this is the Ronto Wrap. It's where you go into Galaxy's Edge and you see the droid roasting the meat over the fire. Not the fire, but the pod racing engine is heating it. Yes, and in the morning, this is when we've eaten here. I've had for lunch too.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but the morning's so good.
Speaker 2:The Ronto Wrap is roasted pork, grilled pork, sausage, peppercorn sauce, tangy slaw wrapped in pita bread. So good, so delicious.
Speaker 1:Well, or do we get the Ronto Morning Wrap?
Speaker 2:Oh, the morning wrap, yes, eggs with everything that you just said?
Speaker 1:Yes, yeah.
Speaker 2:I've had both. They're both very, very good. Yeah, and it's in Galaxy's Edge Right.
Speaker 1:You have to get like fully experienced. Yeah, I was iffy on trying it, but don't let like the look of it necessarily throw you off, because it is really good. It is very delicious.
Speaker 2:Yes, alright, we got two more. And again we're staying in Galaxy's Edge, because it is a very unique place. And what are we getting?
Speaker 1:We are going to the milk stand, the milk stand the famous blue or green milk Team.
Speaker 2:Well you're, I am team green and they're nine dollars and 29 cents each and it is a must do every time we go just about the one.
Speaker 1:There was one time we didn't and I think we were like, oh, we should have, even if it's just for a few sips, yeah, yeah you gotta get it.
Speaker 2:it's good. Yeah, I think the green is more floral.
Speaker 1:It's citrusy yeah.
Speaker 2:I like the green, it's just it. The blue is not bad, I just like the green better.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I would agree, Like it is a little more floral and slightly more citrusy. The blue it's fruity, but lighter. Maybe I don't know.
Speaker 2:It, yeah, yeah. I just like the green better than the blue. The blue is not bad, not bad and I.
Speaker 1:I could drink the green as well, but I just prefer the blue.
Speaker 2:Yeah yeah, all right, and our last dessert. We're going back to backlot express, and this is a dessert, a snack you can get only here, nowhere else in Walt Disney World, and we're getting the Wookiee cookie for $6.99. And let me tell you the new one's not as good as the old one was. Right, they changed it a little bit they changed it just a bit, but it is still awesome. It's two-wheat milk cookies with vanilla cream filling, garnished with a milk chocolate wookiee sash on top quintessential. You gotta get it so good.
Speaker 1:Absolutely love it every time yeah, and like I know on videos and stuff even that I've watched of people like saying how it's changed, they still say as well that it's good it, it's just not quite the same.
Speaker 2:It's not quite the same, all right. Anything else you'd like to add to that list?
Speaker 1:No, you know I mean those are going to be, you know, more specific, obviously, to Hollywood Studios. Of course, though, like in all the parks, you know, you can always get the popcorn buckets, all of that stuff as well.
Speaker 2:All your Mickey-shaped snacks.
Speaker 1:Yep, you can still get that, but what we just talked about is what is more unique to this park.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and when it's your first time going, you kind of want to get that experience too, right so that's what I yeah.
Speaker 1:I just didn't want people to be like, well, what if we wanted popcorn or a Mickey bar?
Speaker 2:Yes, they are still there. Go for it.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:All right, so again, no more Disney trivia. Wah, wah wah. But we're back to Would you Rathers on Instagram, and we asked you, the listener, a few questions. So the first one was would you rather eat at 50's Primetime Cafe or Sci-Fi Dine-In?
Speaker 1:Which we would prefer sci-fi.
Speaker 2:We prefer sci-fi. However, it was a tie Our listeners. It was equal number shows each.
Speaker 1:Interesting, okay, yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah. And the next one was would you rather blue or green milk? In Galaxy's Edge Blue Team, blue won. Oh More people prefer the blue than the green.
Speaker 1:All right, so I guess I'm in the minority, but there were a few people that did green, yeah yeah, but everybody more people preferred blue, so okay, yeah.
Speaker 2:Anything else you'd like to say there?
Speaker 1:no, no, I just uh, you know, hopefully this will help you in making your choices, whether it's dealing with reservations or just narrowing down for quick service and snacks. But whatever it is you decide to do, I'm sure you will enjoy it.
Speaker 2:Yes, so thank you everybody for joining us. We hope you've enjoyed this episode. Next week we're going to be going to Epcot.
Speaker 1:That will be tough. That's going to be so hard.
Speaker 2:That might be a long list, it's going to have to be the ones you think about when you think Epcot and not festival food. Yeah, so like the maple popcorn, right? Yeah, but that's what you think about.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah. So, all right.
