Martyrs (2008) is a French-Canadian horror film directed by Pascal Laugier, known for its extreme violence, psychological horror, and role in the "New French Extremity" movement, following two young women, Lucie and Anna, on a brutal quest for revenge that uncovers a secret society torturing people to reach a state of martyrdom and transcend death. The film is infamous for its shocking and graphic content, shifting from a revenge thriller to a philosophical and deeply disturbing exploration of suffering, culminating in a controversial and enigmatic ending where Anna becomes the final test subject.
