Podcast guesting is a powerful way to grow your business, increase visibility, and build authority—all while sharing your message in a long-form, engaging way. But are you truly ready to be a guest on a podcast? In this episode, I break down three key signs that indicate whether you’re prepared to maximize your podcast guest appearances.
3 Ways to Know If You're Ready for Podcast Guesting:
1️⃣ Do you have a place to send listeners? Before guesting, make sure you have a way to keep the connection going—whether that’s an email list, Facebook group, free resource, or your own podcast. Having a clear call to action will help convert listeners into engaged followers or clients.
2️⃣ Are you open to sharing your personal story? The best podcast episodes are built on storytelling. Your audience will connect with you through your journey—so be ready to share your experiences in a way that builds trust and relatability.
3️⃣ Are you prepared to share your episode when it airs? Podcast guesting isn’t just about showing up—it’s about leveraging the opportunity! Promoting your episode helps expand your reach and strengthens relationships with podcast hosts. If you're not comfortable sharing, it may be time to do some inner work or refine your messaging.
🔹 Bonus Tip: Have a basic technical setup! A simple microphone, headphones, and a quiet space are all you need to sound professional.
If you’re excited about guesting on podcasts but don’t have the time to find the right shows, my Podcast Guesting Accelerator is available! I’ll do the legwork to find aligned opportunities for you, and we’ll work together to ensure you feel confident in your speaking points.
All right, let's dive in. This one is gonna be all about are you ready to actually guest on podcasts? Because the answer sometimes is no, you're not. This idea came about in a conversation when I was actually guesting on someone else's show. We were talking about podcast guesting and how to get started. And she asked the interesting question and she said, How do you know if you're not ready to guess on a podcast? And so these are the three big red flags that I believe show that you are not ready to guess on a podcast. Now, guessing on podcasts can be a huge opportunity strategy that you can use to grow your business. Visibility. This is long-form content that's searchable. People can find you through this. It's different than a social media post. Speaking on podcasts builds your authority, really allows you to gain confidence in your message because you're now practicing it over and over as you're speaking on these shows. You can hear more about this in episode 150, how to pitch yourself to podcast my do's and don'ts. Let's dive into three ways, three big red flags that would indicate that you're not ready yet. But also when we go over each one, I'm gonna tell you how you can fix it and become ready, right? So short answer, yes, it is possible that you're not ready to guess on a podcast. Here's the long answer. Number one, the first way to know Do you have a place to send or direct the listeners after the episode? What I mean by that is think about do you have somewhere to lead them to? Do you have an email list? Do you have free community, virtual community like a Facebook group, your own podcast, free resources that are no-brainers that they should go and download? You don't need to have all of these. In fact, I suggest talking about only one, leading them to one place. But if you don't have any of these, it's not going to be as effective as it could be. Set something simple up. None of these things should take you very long to set up. Well, I guess a podcast maybe would take a little bit more time, but an email list is a quick setup. Things like that that you can get going really quickly so that this doesn't slow you down in this journey and this in this podcast guesting journey that you're going to embark on. But definitely have something that you can lead them to. You don't want to just speak and have this great conversation and then fall flat and have no next steps that they could take if they really jived with you. Now, when you're thinking about these offers or resources that you might have to lead them to, think about what you already possibly have created. Or what offers do you have, like paid offers that you would love to have these listeners turn into potential clients, turn into paid signed clients. Think about what resources would lead to that. So which one leads to that single dream signing? Sometimes we have lots of resources, lots of freebies. Which one? Because they're probably all great, but they're probably also all different. So which one leads you to the dream offer, the dream signing of that client? That's the one you're gonna go with. This also helps you have cohesiveness along with what you're gonna talk about. And then when you know what you would like to talk about and speak on, that's how it's gonna become so much easier to go find these aligned podcasts that need guests on these specific topics. This is the bread and butter, the magic, if you will, of making this be a really great experience for you that could potentially convert into followers, into paying clients. And for the host of the show that you're on, brings your listeners that also would be in alignment with their show because you are in alignment with them. So it's this beautiful blending of connections, collaborations, and things like that. When we get clear on what are we gonna speak about? Having two to three specific topics, think about what makes you different as well that excites you to speak about. This is gonna make it so much easier to book yourself on podcasts because you're gonna be able to put this out on your social media and threads account and all the things and say, Hey, I'm I would love to speak on X, Y, and Z. Who needs a guest on these specific topics? This is where you're gonna start kind of getting a breadcrumb trail of people saying, Yes, that topic I want you on for, or someone's gonna refer you and say, Oh, you should be on so-and-so's show. But if you don't have that clarity, that specific topic, then it's hard for a host to see that they need you on their show. Okay, so to recap, number one, have a plan of where you're gonna lead the listener after they've listened to your episode. This can be kept very simple, but you should have them going somewhere. Next steps. Number two, are you willing to share your personal story or journey? Okay, if you're not, that's probably a bit of a red flag. Now, I I don't mean that you need to be ready to share all your dirty laundry or tell every single thing about you. I do not mean that. But storytelling is what makes for the best podcast episodes. Most of the time, the host is going to ask you about how you got to where you are or tell me about your personal story or something like that. And that piece is how someone listening is going to connect with you. That's how someone listening is going to feel seen and feel validated by you. And when we hit those deep connected feelings, like when you feel seen, that is what drives us people, humans, to potentially act, which would include following you or getting on your email list or downloading a free resource. So that human side of you, that story that goes along with, oh, I sell this or oh, this is my service, is almost more important and that you're more willing to share that than you are to just get on and talk about very like factual or salesy. If you're just gonna stay in that realm, then it's just not going to convert as well because people are really easy and quick to see through that. So be ready to share like a little bit about yourself because that's what makes you unique. That's what makes people connect with you and want to buy from you and follow you instead of someone else. Okay, number three. This one seems a little bit obvious, but I will tell you uh being a host of the last four years and producing over, I don't know what we're at, like 170 some episodes now. This is not apparently obvious. Number three is are you ready to share your episode when it airs? Now you might be thinking, what people don't share the episode? Like, what's the point? Um, exactly. But this actually does happen where guests get on and they don't share the episode when it airs anywhere. Now, this doesn't mean you need to like blast it out to your email list. That's amazing if you do. And I think that if you feel hesitant about sharing the episode, there's probably a few more underlying things that are happening here that we might need to address. So if you don't feel confident in sharing an episode that you just spoke about your expertise on, shared your story on, there might be some inner work that needs to happen. Is there a lack of confidence in what you're sharing? Is there some inner work and inner mean girl that we need to deal with? Because we should be excited and pumped, the most excited about the podcast episode airing, right? It's not a just about having the recording with a with a great host. That's really fun. But the exciting part is when it airs and we get to share it and use that as content and use that as our authority builder and use that as long-term searchable content that potential clients could find you because of this episode. So definitely be ready to share the episode. If you are not, then do not accept the guest spot on that podcast. Because I will tell you something that we should all keep in mind when we're trying to guest on podcasts is as the host, as the producer of a show, guest episodes are the most time-intensive episodes that you can shoot. A solo episode, boom, no time at all. I can crank these out in less than half an hour from recording, editing to publishing. A guest episode, you need to communicate with the guests, you have to schedule a time, you have to prep questions for the episode, you need to get their information from them, you have to then record, you edit, you schedule and publish the episode, you write show notes, you then create graphics and you share them with them that they could share. There is just so much more that goes into a guest episode. So keep that in mind. Yes, we like to think like, oh, you're sharing your expertise on that show, like you're doing the host a favor, but also the host is doing you a favor. Like, this is not just a one-sided thing, this is two-sided, and we want to make sure we're holding up our end of the bargain basically by being ready to share that. Otherwise, it doesn't feel very good because this has happened to me where I've had a guest on and then they don't share. Be ready to share. And if you're not ready to share the episode, then you know, I think there's probably some inner work that needs to be done, some confidence building. Maybe you need to practice your speaking points. Or honestly, you could hire a coach or a mentor like me. We can book a call. And that's one of the things that I do help my clients with is really feeling confident in what are we going to talk about? How can we share our story? How can we be concise and how can we get our message across in a very authentic, genuine, human way? So don't be shy about heading to the show notes and booking yourself a slot with me if this is one of your holdups from getting started on guessing on podcasts. Okay, let's throw a bonus one in there. This is just real quick, but do you have the technical setup ready? And I don't mean that this needs to be a very big, expensive investment. This can truly just be get yourself a microphone, have a set of headphones that you probably already have. You don't need a fancy pair, just anything will do. My microphone is like $35 on Amazon. I can link that in the show notes for you. But you don't need something fancy. And then on the day of the recording, you just really need a quiet spot. And if you can swing it, find some natural light, that always helps. If you have ring lights and things, cool, but you don't have to have all of that. But a microphone and a set of headphones, that's gonna really go a long way in making you sound really clear and professional when you guess on the show. Okay, I hope this helps. You are likely more ready to guess on a podcast than you think, and just remember that we all get better. You might be starting out on your very first episode. Let yourself be a beginner. You don't really usually walk into an arena and be an amazing speaker or be the best at something. So that is okay. Your people will want to be along for that ride. You have to try in order to be able to get better, right? So if you're thinking this is great, but I don't have time to find podcasts to guest on, you can literally hire me to do that work for you. It's called my podcast guesting accelerator. It is available this month. I do have spots open and it is where I will do the legwork to find aligned shows for you to pitch to and connect you with. And we will meet and have that call so that you can feel super confident and prepared in your speaking points and make sure that we are in alignment and have a lot of cohesiveness from your free resources to your paid resources to your speaking points. And you're gonna really knock your podcast guessing spot out of the park. Are you ready to guess on podcasts? If you are, hit me up so I can help you out with that. Otherwise, take a step in the direction of reaching that goal and go post on your social media the two to three topics that you would love to speak on right now. Go, okay, bye.
