Fabulous Film & Friends
Ep. 51 - The Northman v. The Green Knight with David Johnson, DMD & Roseanne Caputi
On this very special 51st episode of Fabulous Film & Friends we’re making good on our promise to pit 2022’s The Northman written and directed by Robert Eggers and starring Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Bjork and Willem Dafoe against 2021’s The Green Knight, written and directed by David Lowry and starring Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris and Ralph Ineson.
My guests this week are series regulars Dr. David Johnson and Roseanne Caputi. Welcome back to you both.
The synopses to both films are simple:
In the Northman Prince Amleth endures a string of hardships, including posing as a slave to get revenge against his Uncle Fjølnir who murdered his father, the Raven King Aurvandill and married his mother Gudren. With the help of a Slavic Witch named Olga, Amleth, systematically carries out his revenge plot until he realizes he has a choice to give up a mission of vengeance for love.
In The Green Knight, King Arthur’s ne’er do-well nephew Gawain embarks on a quest to find his true self after he answers a Christmas challenge from the mysterious Green Knight. Along the way he encounters robbers, headless ghosts, naked giants a cute, lovable little talking fox and demons, all in service of his self-discovery.
Why are we pitting these two films against each other? Are they similar?
