Courage Over Comfort: Listening to God's Nudges
Ever hesitated to offer a kind word, fearing it might come off as awkward? I did too, until a recent hike taught me a valuable lesson.
In this episode of Evoke Greatness, I share a recent personal encounter
Picture this:
I am out on the mountain and I feel a nudge from God in my heart to encourage a fellow hiker I was passing on the trail...but when the moment came, I chickened out.
I was disobedient.
I immediately felt God say, what if when you needed me to pour into you, I got too scared.
He convicted my heart in that very moment.
That day He gave me second chance. He allowed me to cross paths with her again. I jumped at the opportunity and that small act of kindness lit up their day in a way I never imagined.
This experience was a powerful reminder that when God puts something on our hearts, we need to act.
It doesn’t matter if it’s messy, awkward, or scary. Those little nudges can make a massive impact.
This message is for YOU. If you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it. Courage over comfort. Do it scared. Do it messy. Do it awkward. Just do it.
A rising tide raises all ships, and I invite you along on this journey to Evoke Greatness!

Speaker 1:Welcome back to another episode of Evoke Greatness. This is going to be just a short one, just some thoughts that I had while recently taking a hike. Whenever these things come to me, I always like jot a little note down on my phone something because I feel like it's perspective and it's something that could be valuable to someone else, and so it's something that I enjoy sharing with other people, and so I wanted to just record a short little episode sharing this experience and encouraging you to follow the nudges. You know those internal feelings that we get. So I was hiking the other day and I get these nudges when I see people doing something that I know is difficult for them, when I see somebody working out at the gym, when I see somebody running, when I see somebody on the mountain and I know that they have to put forth a lot of effort to do it. And so I see this woman. This is a big mountain, so I can see her coming towards me and I have this overwhelming urge to tell her that she's doing a great job. Who doesn't need to hear you're doing a great job, especially when you're doing something that is challenging. She started walking up towards me as we were going to pass each other on the trail and last minute I just second guessed myself and I'm like what if she's like? What a weirdo? And so I didn't say it, I didn't tell her when I had the opportunity and I had a divine nudge saying, hey, pour into this person. I didn't do it because I got scared. I didn't do it because I thought she might think that's super weird.
Speaker 1:Immediately after passing her, I'm like I said to myself God, I'm sorry, because I feel like I get those nudges from God. It is God putting something on me to pour into someone, to say words of encouragement. That is like a love language for me. I love encouraging other people. There are times when I need encouragement and God puts those right people in my life with the right words, and sometimes it doesn't have to be something big, but it's the gesture and it's someone thinking about it and actually being obedient to say what's on their heart.
Speaker 1:And so I pass her. I think to myself oh my God, I can't. I'm sorry, god, I didn't say it. I didn't say it, I was disobedient. And immediately in that moment on my heart God put what if, when you needed me, I got scared? What if, when you needed me, I got scared? What if, when you needed me, I didn't say it no-transcript, because I thought you know what that's? What obedience is right. When God gives us a nudge to do something, it is doing it scared, it is doing it weird, it is doing it awkward, it is doing it, it is being obedient to it. And so God said all right, girl, I'm going to test you today.
Speaker 1:And I thought about that woman. I thought about what if I would have said something, what if that would have? What if that was? She was tired, she, you know, like we're, it's hot, and what if she needed that in the moment. So God gives me a second chance. We're on the trail and we're going around one big mountain and so oftentimes there's an opportunity to pass somebody a second time. And what was so interesting is she was going uphill and I was going downhill when I passed her the second time and sis was worn out. Her face was bright, red, it was hot and sister was worn out. There was nothing on the face of this planet that was going to get me to stop saying oh girl, you are doing great. I just want you to know you're doing great. And so I like start kind of pumping myself up, like have the courage to do it, as I see her about to pass me on the trail again and I said with conviction. With conviction, I said I just want you to know you are doing great. And this girl's face lit up, y'all. Her face lit up. She was tired, she was worn out, she just wanted to be back at her car. And the words I said, the words of encouragement that God put in my heart earlier on the trail, that I was disobedient on, I had conviction in my heart and he gave me a second opportunity. There was nothing that was going to stand in the way of my obedience in that moment. And so I want you to remember that this carried this woman back to her car. She was tired and those words of encouragement carried her back. To remember that this carried this woman back to her car. She was tired and those words of encouragement carried her back to her car. And guess what? It's a win-win, because do you think I felt crappy after I said I just want you to know that you're doing great? No, I felt great.
Speaker 1:It's like you throw positive energy and vibes at somebody and they absorb it and then boom, it comes back and hits you too. And so I want you to think about the things that God is nudging you to do. He is nudging you to do them for a reason, and he is counting on your obedience, and so I don't know what it is for you, I don't know who your woman on the trail is in your life, who you're getting nudged to give some words of encouragement to. But do it scared, Do it weird, do it awkward, do it sweaty. Do it because God is trusting you with that message. He trusted me with that message. He had to give me two chances.
Speaker 1:Look, I get the disobedience thing out of fear. I've done that far too many times and with age and with wisdom I try to really pay attention to. God is giving me the opportunity to pour into someone else, and I know I love it when people capitalize on the opportunity and they're faithful and they're obedient and they pour into me. It is my responsibility to honor God, to be obedient when he puts something on my heart. So someone out there I'm convinced someone out there needs to hear this. There's something on someone's heart where you're like.
Speaker 1:Sonny made this for me today. This message was specifically for me today. I hope I hope that it lands with somebody like that. I can just trust and put out there with intention that God gave me this experience and put it on my heart to send this out to y'all who are listening, and so I hope it lands well. I hope that you have courage. I hope that you can muster up the bravery and the obedience to be able to step into what God is calling you to do. I hope you all have an amazing rest of the week and I appreciate each and every one of you.

I'll leave you with the wise words of author Robin Sharma Greatness comes by doing a few small and smart things each and every day. It comes from taking little steps consistently. It comes from making a few small chips against everything in your professional and personal life that is ordinary, so that a day eventually arrives when all that's left is the extraordinary.
