I didn’t build my business after getting sober
I built it while struggling quietly behind the scenes.
But when I put down the drink, I picked up something way more powerful: clarity, confidence, and a whole new way to lead.
Now, this podcast is where I spill it all
The lifestyle, the business growth, the mindset shifts plus the truth about what it really takes to stay sober, scale a business, and show up unapologetically.
If you're a big dreamer who wants more out of life (and maybe less wine with it)… you're in the right place. So grab your latte, your to-do list, or your running shoes.
Let’s get into it.

Degree Wellness Takeover: Luxury Recovery, Contrast Therapy, and Evidence-Based Wellness in St. George, Utah.
The Samantha Parker interviews Mike and Hope, owners of Degree Wellness in St. George, describing it as a luxury wellness and recovery studio offering evidence-based modalities including contrast therapy (infrared sauna and cold plunge in private suites), cryotherapy, full-body red light, compression massage boots, IV therapy, and nutrient shots (e.g., B12, D3, glutathione, NAD+). They discuss benefits such as reducing inflammation, improving energy, nervous system regulation, mood and anxiety support, and recovery for athletes and everyday clients, emphasizing privacy, comfort, and consistency. They share protocols (typical sauna/cold/rest timing, temperature range 44–47°F, and a guideline of about 11 minutes of cold exposure per week for beginners), safety cautions (ask a doctor if pregnant/breastfeeding/postpartum or with certain conditions), and anecdotes about improved sleep, reduced pain, and the studio’s community feel. Hey guys. Welcome back to the Samantha Parker show. We have been doing our takeover series, which has been so fun. So today I've got. Two of my favorite people. Welcome to the couch. Yeah, thank you. Thank you. Happy to be here. Yeah, I don't think I've ever said that. I'm all welcome to the couch.
So this is Mike and Hope, and they are the owners of Degree Wellness and Degree Wellness. I'm gonna let you guys explain what it is. It's just really cool. It's a brand new place here in St. George, but you know, they have like contrast therapy. They have all the things. So how do you guys. Describe degree wellness like in a nutshell.
I'll start. Degree. Wellness is a luxury wellness and recovery studio that uses evidence-based therapies like the contrast therapy, coal plunge cryotherapy, infrared sauna compression, and IV therapy to just help reduce inflammation improve your energy, help regulate your nervous system, and just support your overall health and wellness.
Yeah. Yeah. We're, we're all about just helping everybody feel, look and be their best. I mean, I feel like I look pretty good when I go over there. It's for sure. I think my first experience of it was, oh, this is super bougie. I think I said that like 10 times. Yeah. I was like, oh, this is nice. And then when you realize.
That you can do cold and hot. So the cold plunge in the sauna in a private suite, I was like, sign me up. Yeah, for sure. Because I think like the week before that I had been, I'd gone somewhere else 'cause I was really sick and I was like, I just need to go to the sauna and the cold plunge. But I, you know, I came in pretending like I wasn't sick.
And then when I got in the sauna, I was so happy that no one was in there. 'cause usually it's packed. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I laid like face down with like a towel under my face and it was just like all the stuff was coming outta me, you know? And I was like. I hope no one comes in. Yeah. Yeah. So I love like the privacy of it, right?
Yeah. And that's really part of the design, right? That it's not, it's meant to be upscale. So when you go to recover, when you go to detox and do all of those things, really it's kind of a me time, self-care type of a, of a feeling. And so we've created the space so that, you know, it's easy to do that and feel comfortable like you're in, you know, a nice, comfortable suite.
Mm, you're not in a public pool or you know, that kind of a situation. So, no, I love it. 'cause you've got like, all this stuff is right there. You can shower. You've got bathrobes, you've got shoes. I watch Netflix. You know, the best part is every time I go, my show is still right there. Yeah. Well, no one else is watching my show, so I've kept that show just for degree.
You guys know what I watch. I don't go in and look at people's profiles. Yeah. Well usually my show, I use your profile. Oh it's owning Manhattan. Oh yeah. I just keep watching it and I'm like, it's fun to watch what you're there. Oh, that's good. I think I've been watching The Witcher in there. Oh, the Witcher?
Yeah. It's been good. At least as long as you have Henry Cave after that. I don't know. I don't, yeah, I watched the first season after that. I just kinda like, it's a little dark. Lost it. It's fun. It's fun. I lost the plot. Yeah. Okay. Did you guys do like hot and cold plunge before? Is this something that was like a passion?
Because I know this, you bought a franchise. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So were you guys into this before? Well, so we've all been athletes. We had a, our daughter played division one soccer, so she's done all the things. She did the cupping, she did, you know, injections. She's done you know, ice baths. I mean, I don't know how many times we poured ice into our own tub because she came home with aches and pains and, and so I've been coaching for a long time.
I was an athlete. I played baseball, so I was familiar with it. But we weren't necessarily looking for that. It wasn't like necessarily a passion, but when we were looking for an investment that we wanted to be a part of. And we found degree and heard the story behind it and experienced what you've experienced the modalities in, in that environment.
We fell in love with it and decided we wanted to share it with other people. So did you guys fly out or travel to a different Yes. Where'd you go? Jacksonville, Florida. We went out where? It's based out of, that's where all of her, the. The corporate studios are out. So we went, flew to Jacksonville, Florida, met the, the lady behind Degree Wellness Amanda Watts, light cap, and got to experience what she's, how she's created degree.
She purchased two original studios and. Curated it into degree wellness with the evidence-based therapies simplified it added the injections and the I ims and just really made it something beautiful and we got to experience all the services there when we went out and we flew across four different time zones and drove home to another one and no jet lag.
And we thought, this is, this is something real. Oh yeah. That's what I love is I actually. Don't feel, and I know that like I'm compounding my running and stuff mm-hmm. But I don't feel like gassed. Right. Like my body feels good. Right, right. You're, you're, you're not drained and you still have the energy to do what else needs to be done.
Mm-hmm. I love it. I mean, getting in the cold plunge isn't like super fun, you know, I'm not like, Hey guys, let's all get together and. But I don't find it that bad. Right. You know, and some days I can tell my body's kind of like, eh, no. Yeah. This is, I'm feeling a little stressed. I don't wanna be in here as long, but I also don't push myself to stay in super long.
Right. Well, you don't have to. I mean, the evidence, the, the science is, you know, anything that kind of hijacks your system and wakes it up is gonna make a difference. And then you get to where you extend a little bit longer in order to kind of break through those walls and feel those benefits. Yeah.
Okay. You guys keep saying evidence backed. What do you mean by that? So there's been studies done on cold therapy, there's been studies done on the infrared sauna that shows what it does to your body, your nervous system, your sympathetic, your parasympathetic, and how it's affecting that in a positive way.
Okay. Yeah. So there's like actual science behind it. Yep. Yep, for sure. Okay. Do you know the difference? I don't think this was in my questions I sent to you, so don't kill me. But this is something I kinda went down a rabbit hole and I listened to a ton of podcasts and read a bunch of stuff, is like men versus women in the cold plunge.
Because one time like, well this is a different place. We're not naming names, but there's a lot of cold plunge bros in the cold plunge, you know? Right, right. And they were kind of making fun of me the one day, 'cause I just do like a pretty short dip. Sure. You know? And they're like, oh. And I was like, listen guys, there's science behind this.
Mm-hmm. For sure. But I think for women, you don't have to stay as long. So I actually just read this last night and the reason why women. Don't need as long is because we have it's, we have more fat content on our body, and so the cold plunge actually activates that brown fat, which we have more of. So we get more benefits in less time than the men do.
And it also affects us more because we have more of that fat con, composition. I was like this, I don't know if fat words visceral. Yeah. The, the fat, the fat composition that Amanda does in a woman's body. And so we fill this the benefit sooner. Oh, interesting. Jenny from men counseling as well. She was telling me some of it is like a nervous system thing too.
So it's like women don't need to have like that huge spike. They like to stay more grounded. And I had read a long time ago, like as long as you can get like your Vega nerve, is it Va Vagus? Mm-hmm. Vega Uhhuh, Vaga Nerve vagus, I think. I'm all darner all the way in you're really getting all the benefits you need, right?
So if you can get like all the way up to your neck and even just like 30 seconds. Yep. That's what I've been reading. And so that's kinda what I push myself for is like 30 to 60 seconds. And especially when you're doing the contrast, when you get into that warm air your. Blood vessels are opening up, they're expanding.
Right. And then as soon as you get in the cold, I mean the minute you hit the cold, they contract. Mm-hmm. And that is what flushes the toxins out. That going back and forth. That's why you do Okay. A session. You go back and forth 'cause that's what's going on. Yeah. How many times do you think people go back and forth?
Because I'm always wondering like, what should I be doing? I've, I've heard people will do one time, one sauna, one cold, one sauna. I've heard people say, oh, I did it five times today. So it really depends on your body. Yeah. And what. Your stress prescription is and what you can handle that day. And the typical protocol is you do 10 to 12 minutes in a sauna.
You do two to three minutes or whatever you can in the cold plunge, and then you have a two minute rest. And so like a, a 45 minute appointment is really 30 minutes of contrast and 15 minutes that you're changing, showering, those kind of things. So yeah, that's kind of how we've timed things. The 60 minute gives you enough time to do a a third.
Time in each. Yeah. So I usually get three cold plunge. Yeah. You know, and then sometimes if I'm feeling cold, I'll like, stand in the sauna Yeah. For a minute, you know, I'll warm up. Warm up. Yeah. Right. And then shower and change and all that. Yeah. And that really comes down to preference too. So there is benefit to ending on the cold because when you end on the cold, your body is gonna continue to burn calories, trying to warm yourself back up.
And that thermogenesis will burn three to 500 calories depending on the person. Oh, Dr. Steve was telling me that. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, he's like, you should go over and do cryo because you'll have to spend all this energy getting your body warmed up. And the other thing at degree is, you know, we do red light and cryotherapy.
Yeah, I was just gonna say, wait, we didn't mention all the other things. Yeah. So you guys have a cryotherapy chamber? Yes. Where we call it, that's what we call it, cryotherapy chamber. Yep. It's a big, deep freeze tube of dust. No. Yeah, no. So it is like a giant freezer, but it goes down to 175 below. So it really just depends on, you know, again, the person and, and what you're conditioned to.
It has similar benefits to the cold plunge, but you don't have to get wet. Mm-hmm. If, if you don't have a lot of time, you can come in in 10 minutes. And do you know your. Cryotherapy session. Get that boost of endorphins. It makes you feel good. Yeah. Creates a lot of energy and takes care of a lot of aches and pains.
Red light is great for your skin. It does. We have full body red light. So the nice thing about a private suite is, you know, you can go in there. The more skin you expose, the more beneficial. So you can go in there. Nikki? Yep. Nikki, you can suit. I mean, I do all this stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Well, honestly, not cryotherapy because you gotta be bundled.
Yeah. There's a few things you better cover over there. But yeah. So it's great for producing collagen in your skin. It's great for arthritis. You know, we have people with arthritis that will come in there and do red light poop circulation. Oh, cool. Yeah. I have a hard time standing there. I'm just standing there doing nothing.
Right. I have to put AirPods in and listen to something. Oh, oh, genius. Yeah. Yeah, so I'm, that's why I've never done it. I'm like, I don't wanna stand there. Yeah. Yeah. And some people will set their phone just on the cabinet there and throw on YouTube or whatever, a podcast or whatever, so, yeah. Yeah. It'd probably be good for me just to stand there and contemplate life, right?
Yeah. Stand there in our own thoughts. Exactly. Like, dear God, here I am again in Red life. Okay, so the cryo. Therapy chamber. Let's talk about that for a second. 'cause it's kind of intense, and I have to tell you guys, I didn't, I didn't like it. Were you there when I had, I was having my meltdown. Uhhuh.
Yeah. Melted. Yeah. Yeah. Because you go into a freezer ish. Mm-hmm. And you shut a door and you are in a box. Yes. Yeah. I just, yeah, I don't, and it wasn't that I wouldn't do it again. I just genuinely didn't. I was struggling and it was so interesting. 'cause I'm not usually that person. Right. But I was in it with my friend Ashley, and she was like, are you okay?
I am like, no. I literally had my, like, my hands above my head and my head down. Yeah. And I was like, I am gonna freak out. I'm gonna like punch this glass door and it's not, and then all of a sudden she goes, look, you can just push it open. Yeah, yeah. Right. Yeah. And I was like, oh yeah. Oh yeah. Okay. Yeah. You can get out you want.
It's not like, it's not like we lock you in there. No, no. You can get up when you want. Just having like a. You know, nervous breakdown for a minute. Well, it's, it's a different same benefits, same, just a different way to get your cold therapy, but yeah. You are, I, I always say I feel a bit like a superhero that I can step into a freezer and stand there.
Yeah. Oh, Ashley was like, oh, it was great. It was so easy. Yeah. I'm like, that's awesome. I'm gonna stick. Well, did they throw the headphones on you? Because we have a lot of people that have their song, like we have one guy that every time he comes in it's ice, ice baby, and Oh, put it on, put the headphones on, and you get in there and, and the time goes by really quick.
Yeah. Oh, I love that. And you come out feeling amazing. So, oh, did hope tell you about how like I had multiple visits in a row where other people's Bluetooths were connecting into my sauna? Oh, yes. Yeah. I have to tell how funny the first time was. So it was a phone call in Spanish. And I have to tell you, it was like full volume and it was some guy on the phone, full Spanish.
It was funny 'cause me and my husband were in one of the smaller rooms. Uhhuh. Yeah. And I was, we were done. So I was like showering off and all of a sudden it's just blaring and I'm like, Jake, turn it off. And he's like, I can't turn it off. And I'm like, Jake, make it stop. And he is pushing all the buttons, turn the whole sauna off, you know?
And I'm like, you gotta make it stop. I'm like, they're gonna think we're like crazy. So I, yeah, there's some learning curves that we got opened because the, the Bluetooth it, you know, it doesn't know the difference, so you have to connect to the right one. Well, our customers didn't know that, and so we would have people go into one suite and you know, they'd pull up the Bluetooth on their phone.
They'd just connect to one and not realize they're connecting to the one next door. So I could have totally done it, you know? Yeah. So we. We put up labels and, and kind of educate people when we take 'em in there and it, it, it's, I mean, it's away. Funny. We did have that a few times. The second time was great though.
I was in the sauna and I'm like, it has to be an old guy. Which you guys confirmed it was an older man. Yeah, I know who it was. And it was like George Strait. George Strait. Yep. Alan Jackson. And I was like. I was in there just vibing. I was like, who were you when the world stopped turning? That's awesome.
You know? And I'm like, I'm like, this isn't bad. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you're wondering, well, what are they experiencing? If they're not hearing it, they're probably turning it up, you know? I know. Do you think they just left it? He left it playing. Yeah. Sometimes that would happen too, is they would leave it connected.
Yeah. And if nobody goes in there for a while and then someone goes into that suite, then it, it's there. I thought it was great you guys, honestly. Yeah, it didn't, little bit surprise. It was a little bit tricky. Keep figuring out at first, but yeah, my husband and I thought it was hilarious. Well, it makes me wonder on the other end, you know, 'cause if you're ever driving down the road, so I'll pull into the garage and he'll be in the the car that I always connect to.
Oh yeah. And then suddenly he's got my phone call, but I'm thinking. Who is that person think they were talking to? If they couldn't hear the conversation? No, they had to have been able to hear it because it was full. Like both ends. Of the both ends. Yeah. Yeah. That's funny. That's probably why it was so loud.
It was just hilarious. Yeah. Yeah, because I'm like yelling and he's yelling at me and I'm like, this is great. Our older clients, they're, they're not real savvy on the technology, so they tend to Bluetooth though, I feel like is a mystery. Yeah, right. My George Strait client, he's like, here. Put it on. So we we help him now.
Yeah. Yeah. That's so cute. We connect for him. I feel like I need to be friends with him. I really liked his playlist. There you go. Yeah, it was good. He's awesome. Yeah. No, I think it's great and. Like, we like to do date night there too. Do you get a lot of people who come in together? We actually do.
Mm-hmm. Yep. It's a popular spot for the date night because it's just the two of you mm-hmm. In that room. You, one of you can be doing the contrast. I mean, we got a lot of, some of the women that don't prefer the cold punch, so they'll hang out in the. Sauna while the husband does the contrast. And I've got some husbands, they don't do the coal plunge.
My husband doesn't love the coale. Yeah. So their wives will do the, so it gives opportunity for both, but it's just, you're in a room together, you are activating the fight or flight, and you're relaxing. So there's a lot that's going on there that's really beneficial for you. Yeah. And it's a good space to, you know, talk through things and, and Oh yeah.
You know. Sometimes it's like focus time together too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You've got that bougie suite and all to yourselves and throw all kinds entertainment on all things. It's nice. I like it because like my husband and I, you know, I don't drink and I haven't drank for like two years. Mm-hmm. But we used to go out for drinks and so it's.
Always like, well, what do we do now? Yeah. You know, what do we do with our life now? Where's our hangout spot? Yeah. So it's kind of nice to be like, oh, we could go over to degree. Yeah. You know, it's great. Especially at Valentine's, we had quite a few people. Oh yeah. Even from OUTTA state that came in or out of town that came in.
Oh, that's fun. So it was good. I love that. Yeah. Okay, so who is degree really for. Degree is for everybody. Degree is for everybody because everybody needs some type of recovery and wellness. Whether it's a long day at home with the kids and you're sick of dishes and you just need some new time. It's for that busy executive who's been in and out of, appointments and meetings all day need some time to just reset, recalibrate get a little bit of energy. It's for the retiree that wants to keep going, play their pickleball, their golf, hang out with the grandkids. It's for the wellness advocate that's trying natural remedies and natural modalities to keep their health up.
And obviously the athlete, the athlete's an easy one to recovery and improve their performance in everything that they do. So it's really degrees for every body. Yeah. One, one of our modalities, the compression massage, a lot of our runners will come in right after a race because it flushes out the toxins.
Mm-hmm. They get that lymphatic massage and, and you know, really helps them recover faster. Yeah. I'm doing that today. So I have contrast therapy. I just did 45 minutes, which it's gonna be really short, and I was like, boo. And then I'm doing the boots Uhhuh. Oh, perfect. They're awesome. The other thing a lot of 'em do is they'll come in and get a bag of IV just.
Oh yeah. Get that hydration because yeah, I love a bag of vy. As soon as you get out there running right, sweating your guts out. So, that helps them be energized so that they can not only perform well, but recover better. Yeah. And you guys do other things too. The other day I was there and I got like a shot, like a nutrient shot, nutrient shot, quick nutrient shot.
Mm-hmm. Yep. Lots of different nutrients. The B12, the D three glutathione. We have a zen shot that has a couple things in it, and we do the NAD plus. So I think there's six or seven quick little nutrient shots that you can come in. I'm a huge fan of NAD. Yeah. Yeah. I keep telling everyone, I'm like, if you're not taking NAD.
You know anyone like my age and above. Yeah. Our age and, yep, that's right. Yeah. If you're dealing with any kind of brain fog, any kind of, any of those type of issues that we all get as we get older. NAD is like the Miracle cure. Oh yeah. I took it, it's amazing last night and I was like, I was saving it because I don't like to take it every night and I just, I mean, I.
By taking it, you have to inject it, you know? Yeah, sure. Inject it into this nice little fat pad I got, you know? I'm Well, there you go. But I get excited because in the morning I wake up and it's like, you're awake, your brain is awake. Yeah. I'm like, oh, this is nice. Yeah. Well, we, we offer it in two ways.
I mean, you can get the injections like that, but we also have a protocol you can come in and get it an iv. Mm-hmm. I've seen that. So you're getting that hydration as well along with it. Yeah. Yeah. I like that you guys do IVs. I think they're just so good and it's nice to have a more accessible these days.
Yes. You know, where it's like, even if you're just feeling under the weather or like you genuinely like need one, it's so nice. Yeah, right. Well, you can even just come in and get a bag of saline if you're dehydrated, because you know, we're all chronically dehydrated, especially living in the desert. So yeah, I do drink a lot of water, but yeah.
Yes. Yeah. Well, and we have a private IV suite, so any of the IVs that if you do wanna do an any d. Some of those that take a little bit longer because they wanna drip it slow. Mm-hmm. You could sit in there and throw your Netflix on and, or if you're just a slow drip, like me, we call it, apparently call a power nap, you know, we'll have people come in and do the compression with oxygen and an IV and oh, and just take a nap.
This is so you guys. The red light. Like the light facial. Yeah, light facial. Yeah. There you go. Light. I'm the red light and I'm like waving. So in the light facial. Yep. Yeah, so I just think it's really cool in there. Do you guys just go in and you're like, this place is cool? Oh, yeah. Yeah. I can't get her to come home at the time.
She's just, there're still I. I kind of feel like that about kiln sometimes. I'm like, well I could just sit on the couch and Yeah. Yeah. You know, not go home. Yeah. Okay. So then I also think there's a really big mental health component here that you guys haven't addressed. 'cause you know, when you feel good in your body, you feel good mentally.
But really, why do you think people feel so good when they're leaving? 'cause it's not just that my body feels good. Right. I feel good. Well, one of the things that those cold therapies do is it's great for anti-anxiety. I mean, you probably can think of the anxiety you feel just to get into the cold.
Mm-hmm. But once you kind of break through those walls it's amazing for reducing anxiety. But it also the going through that process boosts your endorphins and so it improves your mood. Same with red light. Red light will improve your mood. Do you guys words, were you guys fans of Legally Blonde?
Did you watch it? Yes. And she's like, she exercises so she has endorphins, uhhuh, and happy people just don't kill their husbands. That's right. That's what I was thinking of. Yeah, exactly right. Yeah. She couldn't have done it 'cause she was happy. So yeah, it's. We'll see some murder mystery here along, and they'll be like, Hmm, did they go to degree?
Yeah. No, it couldn't be her. So maybe that'll be the storyline. Yeah. Oh, perfect. Perfect guys. Yeah, I'll be there every day. Storyline. There you go. I know Cindy went over and did it. Did you? Cold plunge? Yeah. How long did you make it? I think a minute. The most I did. Yeah. Ooh. Yeah. Good job. Yeah, that was cool.
I brought my sister in once and she loved it. Yeah, yeah. Did she? She did that. She sat in there and I'm like, what are you doing? She's like, just hanging out three minutes. I'm like, do you have feelings? I was like, this makes sense. This is tracking three minutes and she'd never cold punch before. Oh, wow. Oh, that's awesome.
I've had older clients that came in, saying that they were, were not gonna do it. Not gonna do it. And I just always encourage 'em just to at least try it. And they came out and they said, I thought I was gonna hate that. And I think it's my new best friend. Mm-hmm. They love it. Yeah. Yeah. It's great for getting rid of the s and paints too.
My husband said he wants to go more with me. So I got him some cold plunge socks for Valentine's Day. Oh, there you go. Oh cool. Yeah. 'cause he says it makes his feet cramp. I don't know. Yeah. Well, yes, you lose your heat out of your hands and your feet and your head, so Yeah, that makes sense. Do you guys wear like the socks or anything?
I don't, no, no. Yeah. No. It's just one more thing I gotta deal with. I know. I'm just sitting there on my birthday. See you guys? Yeah. Okay. So what are the kinda like mis inferiors you guys hear when people come in? Like, is cold plunge safe? Cold plunge is safe? What about if you're pregnant? That's a good one to ask your doctor.
Okay. I, I probably wouldn't do it pregnant because there's more of my skin being exposed. I don't want more exposed, but that's, that would be something we'd, we always advise anybody pregnant breastfeeding or postpartum. Always check with your doctor first. Yeah. But as far as everybody else. Cold plunging is safe as long as it's done.
Where we do it, it's regulated, it's controlled. We keep the cold plunges at a, you know, average temperature between 44 to 47 degrees. So it's not warmer, but it's not the super cold, and your appointment time is limited, so you can't over stress your body. Mm-hmm. And give yourself hypothermia by all means, because it's in a controlled environment.
So, yes, cold plunge is good for your body. Okay. Is there any other things you guys hear from people? Yeah, sometimes, you know, some of the older clients will come in and, oh, they've had, they've found a skin cancer or something like that. Mm-hmm. So they're worried about can they do red light or can they, do, you know?
Oh, definitely can. Yeah. And there's, there's some things that you'll read that it's great for it and others where the doctor will, you know, be against it. So for the most part, we found that we, again, we we're not health professionals, so we'll send 'em to ask their doctor, but most of the time they come back and they're excited because he says it's actually gonna be good for their skin.
Oh yeah, I would, I would think red light would be great for skin cancer and different things, but I mean, who knows it well, from what I'm learning, it depends on the exact type that you have. Oh, okay. So it's always best to consult a doctor. True. And things like that. You guys are like, listen. Yeah. What about what kind of doctor we got as well?
Dr. Steve. Oh yeah, Dr. Go see Dr. Steve. He probably gets so sick of me. I'm like, Sam's random thoughts of the day and he's like, I'll text him like the most bizarre questions. He's so smart though. Yeah. I'm like, this guy knows so much about everything. Yeah. That's awesome. He's pretty sharp. Okay, so how often should someone come in.
I, I'll let you go ahead. The, if you've never cold plunged before, you need to keep it about 11 minutes a week, and that's gonna depend on what you can do anywhere from two to three to four sessions a week. 11 minutes a week is kind of your, your max that you wanna do to your body. Yeah. I would like to be over there at least three days a week.
You guys aren't open on Sundays? We're, we're waiting for our clients to push us to do that. That's our one day that we get a break. Oh, I know. I'm all, as a business owner, I'd be like, yeah, listen guys. Neither's Chick-fil-A. Yeah. There's been a lot of, so I mostly do my long runs on Sunday Uhhuh, and then I'm like, oh, I wish degree was open.
Yeah. Oh. Well, we figured there'll come a time, it's easier to add it than it is to take it away. Oh, for sure. So we thought we'll start this way and see how it goes, but also I get it, you know? Yeah. I totally get it. Yeah. Okay, so who benefits the most from this? Wow. I don't know if I could say there's any one person that benefits.
It's a trick question, but I think the key with any of this stuff is consistency, right? It's, it's one thing to go do it with a group and you know, it's fun to do it once in a while and you're gonna feel good that day, but really to get the results you need to be consistent. And so I, I think that we find our busy moms that come in, you know.
It's a mix of, you know, mental break as well as the physical benefits. And so, you know, two or three times a week is great. And then we have we have Sarah Edwards, she's a big competitive runner out there. We have a couple other athletes that are in there. Yeah. I see literally four or five days a week athletes.
The I follow over there Yeah. Sharing on their Instagram and it makes me so happy. Yeah. We, we've got an older woman why shouldn't. Well, she's, she's, she's my age and she's got she's not old then. She's not old. Then she's got severe what's the term? What's the symptoms? I can help you.
It's an inflammation. What, what's the disease? Rheumatoid. No, no. What's it called? Yeah, we're all gonna draw blank in here. She's got a chronic illness. Yes. Yeah, she has a chronic illness and one of the side effects is she sleep. She would sleep upwards of 12 hours a day. Sounds nice, but awful.
Right? Yeah. In the first month of coming to degree, after we opened, she got down to seven to eight hours a day of sleep, and so she was able to wake up with her husband when he woke up, so she literally gained four hours every day of her life back. So that's amazing. It depends where you're at in your life, and I think.
You know, everybody has a benefit to it, you know, and who benefits the most? Kind of depends on where you're at and where your body's at, where your brain's at, where your emotions are at, and how you benefit from it. And to autoimmune your reaction to it. Auto, right. Autoimmune. That's what I was looking for.
That's right. Autoimmune. Oh, okay. Yeah. Autoimmunity. I was trying to think of like specific things, you know, and I'm Isn't so many ways. Yeah. Just an autoimmune disease. So it just, who benefits the most? It depends on what you're going through, and I think there's people that are most committed to it.
Mm-hmm. Yeah. You know, if you make their regular part of your day, your life, the consistency they benefit the most. Yeah. The consistent ones benefit the most. Yeah. I like going early, so you know, seven 'cause then it can be done by eight 15, then I can go home. Then it can be here by, you know. Usually we start appointments at like 10.
Yeah. Mm-hmm. Which is, it's not a bad life. I got a good life. Right. Yeah. But I do get up at five, you know? Yeah. So I've been going, yeah. You got your five to nine before your nine to five. Mm-hmm. Today I'm going at five 30, so just like right after work, so. Mm-hmm. I think it's great. Yeah. Yeah. It. There's just so many benefits that go into it.
Oh, we haven't mentioned some of my favorite things. Okay. Do you guys wanna know mine? Sure. What? The little fridges. The little mini fridges. Mini fridges. Stocked with glass, ice, cold water. Mm-hmm. And the lavender infused towels. Oh, I love the little towel. Yeah. You do too. Yes. I'm like, I put it on my face in there.
I do too. I put it on my face. Yeah. After. Every time I cold plunge, I like, I did try to stick my face in the water yesterday for the first time, and I was like, I can do it. And all of a sudden I was like, it's like I've never taken a breath before. I was like, I'm like, don't like that. And I like the, the towel and put it on.
Yeah. Yeah. We want you to be comfortable in there. And you know, obviously when you're in that warm sa. You know, you're gonna get thirsty, so I know sometimes I'll pound like the two waters. Yes. Yeah. That you put in there. Yep, yep. Or I, I even put 'em in my hydro. I can take it. There you go. If you ever need, I, it's a storm water, but I'm like, I'm taking this with me.
Yeah. If you ever need more, you just holler. But yeah, I like the lavender infused towel. I can sit in the sauna for 30 minutes and then the last 15, I just lay it on my face. Yeah. It's you gets me through the last 15. It's like a little extra bougie touch. Yeah. You know? Yeah. There's a, oh, the hype.
Didn't Ashley from the hype come in the other day? Yeah. Did she did, yeah. They give you like lavender towels, uhhuh after your workout. And they're cold uhhuh because they used to work the front desk there and you have to soak 'em in water and put'em in the fridge. But you get one after like your spin or Pilates or whatever doing over there.
And I'm just like, wow, this is bougie. Yeah. You know, they can pass them out. Well, it's that extra touch that means that we care about you and how you feel. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And I do really feel like when I go over there, all the girls are super nice. Everyone's just really friendly and it's just, it's nice, you know?
Yeah, yeah. Like you don't feel awkward. Right, right. We call 'em wellness associates 'cause that's their job is to help you come up with the right protocol, help you pick the right. Membership have you find, you know, what's gonna work best for you. And so, you know, they go through quite a bit of training in order to do that job.
Yeah. And I feel like you guys are kinda creating like a little community over there. We're working on it. Trying, yeah. Yeah. So what really, sorry, let me like, I'm all pause, edit. Cut that. Come on man. What kind of environment are you guys really trying to cultivate? Over a degree. A positive, comfortable.
Welcoming environment for whatever stage of life that you're in, whether you need to cry it out, yell it out, celebrate it. Just be, it's the place for you to go and it should feel upscale. Yeah. It's like what you talked about with kiln. You know, when you come in here, it's just a professional environment.
Yeah. Somewhere you wanna hang out. Mm-hmm. Yep. And that's what we're trying to do at degree is, you know, we want it to be a place where, you know, it feels good when you come in the door. Yep. I mean, we have the, you know, the salt wall, as soon as you walk in, the air you breathe is already healthier, so. Oh, and it's pretty too.
Yeah, it's very pretty. It's pretty cool. I know the one day I was like, can I touch it? Yeah, if you can touch, it's actually cool to the touch. It is. Yeah. I like it. It's awesome. And it's actually, you guys are located just across the parking lot here at Kiln? Yes. Yes we are. So like this is the best place in town to be.
Yeah, for sure. It is. I actually really love this corner. You know when they first started building here. And are you guys, how long have you guys been in St. George? 15 years. Almost 16. So we're 12 years. But when they first started building over here, I was like, that's wild. It's just gonna all wash away.
'cause you know how this whole area would just flood all the time. Oh yeah. Yeah. And then they put the Maverick in Uhhuh. And I was like, in my head, I'm like, that Maverick's gonna wash away. I don't know. Like they didn't. Yeah. We all saw that one storm that just wiped everything out. Everything, yes. That storm.
I remember that storm vividly. We hadn't lived here too long. It was so funny 'cause I, we lived in Santa Clara at the time and our front lawn and our yard had started to flood and it was starting to like hit the garage level. Oh man. And all of a sudden my grandpa like rolls up in his Chevy and he's like, do you wanna go for a drive?
And I'm like, in this? He's like, yeah, let's go check it all out. So we got in and like drove around and he's like, whoa. Like we were looking at all the flooding and I'm like, you were batshit crazy. Yeah, he was my favorite. There was somewhere, there was houses going down the river and. Yeah. Yeah. Crazy stuff, you know, that you'd never see.
Well, don't worry, I got a tour. Yeah, I bet My grandpa was just fun like that. If only you'd have filmed it. I know. Is that right? I wasn't, I wasn't that person then. I still, I worked, still had a floral, worked at a floral shop and Yeah. I hadn't even started like what I do now. Yeah, yeah. Very short after that though, I did.
So this may all have 11 years in business. Oh wow. That's awesome. So I think that's pretty cool. Yeah, that is pretty cool. You're doing a great job. Oh, thank you. Yeah. I always tell people, in fact, this girl the other day wanted me to meet at Starbucks. She was so cute. And I was like, yeah, I'll totally meet you at Starbucks.
You know, Uhhuh. And she's like, had all these questions and I'm like, what's happening? But she just really was like, how did you build a business? Yeah. And I said, brick by brick. Yeah. Yeah. You know, and I'm like, I don't have a, how? I was like brick by flipping brick. Yeah. Because every day's different or that's quite different.
Quite a compliment though. If you got somebody that wants to emulate you, that's cool. No. Yeah. And it wasn't that she wanted to like, you know, stamp my business and make one. Right. She just was like, it's so cool to like see you online and you then she was like, I couldn't believe you responded to your dm.
And I was like, if I never respond to a dm, someone should check my ego, you know? Right. Maybe like, okay, you've gotten a little big for your roaches. Yeah. Yeah. But I did. I thought that was really cool. I was like, you know, I'm like, can we be friends? Can we go for walks? Do you wanna go to degree? Go. Yeah, there you go.
Do you wanna go to to degree? I walk. They wanna have meetings and I've brought up over degree. Yeah. There's a, we have a lot of executives that come in there and do business meetings in there. Yeah. Calls. Hey, someone wanted to meet this week. Oh, it was Mike from Red Rock Media. And I said, the only time I could meet you, Mike, is if you wanted to meet me at the gym.
Yeah. There go. And he's like, I can't do that. I'm like, then we gotta meet next week. Yeah. That's one cool thing about the infrared sauna is it doesn't have to get as hot as a traditional sauna. So people, when you sit in there with a laptop and do work Yeah, I take my phone in and then I take it out when it starts to get slow.
Yeah. Yep. Right. Yeah. Plus I'm like, okay, that means I need to Right. Right. Take a break from it anyways. Right, right. But it's nice also just to like chunk out all your messages. Yeah, for sure. And just be done for the day. That's what I do in the red light. Okay. So just quick fire here and we'll wrap up.
Okay. Do you guys prefer the sauna or the cold first? Sauna. Well, yeah, that was dumb. I always do. People get in the cold pun, they must be psychopaths. I actually have a client that comes in and he will cold plunge and then go to the red light. Oh, okay. That's his psychopath. No. Do we know what he does in his spare time?
Jujitsu. Yep. That's true. I knew it. I told you guys psychopath actually. He's awesome. He's super cool. Yeah. Yeah, he, he's got his routine and that's what's so awesome is that everybody has their own routine that works for their body. Yeah, no, for sure. Yeah. Okay. Morning or evening sessions? Ew. I would say morning.
It depends on what I'm doing. Like two days a week I'll do red light and cryotherapy, and I like to do that earlier in the day. Mm-hmm. And just have that energy boost that I get from cryo. Yeah. But when I'm doing the contrast, I, you know, I just love to chill in there. Take my time. And so usually I don't have time to do that unless it's in the late afternoon or evening.
Yeah. I like to go in the morning. I do come over in the evening as well. I like to just go home and be with my family in the evening. Mm-hmm. Yeah. You know? So I know today I'll be feeling a little antsy, like, I gotta get home. Yeah, yeah. Yep. Yeah. You know, my kids are just, they're getting old man.
Yeah, yeah. Goes fast. They don't need me there, and they're like, what are you doing home? But you know, I like to just be in their faces with you. Yeah. Yeah. My 14-year-old, I can never find him, but that's our 18-year-old. Where is he? I don't know. Yeah. And friends. Oh, he's on Pine Valley. It's the electronic stuff, you know?
Right. Yeah. Yeah. I had to pedal my bike everywhere or walk, so I wasn't making it far. Right, exactly. My mom could drive around and find me, but he's like, I'm like, where is he? Think, God, we can track our locations though, you know? That's right, and I'm. What is he doing at Walmart? Yeah, exactly. Yeah. The one day I was coming down we live in Bloomington, so I'm like coming down like the main road to go out there, you know?
Mm-hmm. And I see this kid on a scooter and he is got a frosty in one hand. And I'm like, please don't let that be Caden. And he's like, he goes and he's blast. Yeah. Down the street. Yeah. Street. And I was like, oh, that's Caden. Yeah. And now that they got those powered scooters, man, you never, never know where you're gonna come.
Yeah. Like did he just take himself to Wendy's? Yeah, he did. You know, he did himself to Wendy's, but also I kind of love like a little bit of independence for him. Yeah, for sure. It's good for him. Okay. So most surprising benefit people have reported to you?
I, I. Most surprising benefit people have reported. I, you know, the one with the client that got four hours of her day back. Yeah. That one shocked me. Yeah, it shocked me because it gives, was very dramatic. Gives actual proof too. Yeah. Actual proof. Yeah. Well, we have a kid professional rodeo guy that broke his collarbone mm-hmm.
Or hurt his shoulder. He's had multiple shoulder surgeries and his girlfriend had bought him a membership. And you know, it's not the typical customer thing 'cause he is younger. Mm-hmm. Right. And he loves it. He's there four days a week and he, we asked him what is the, what is the biggest benefit you've sewn?
And he's, I can sleep without pain. Yeah. Oh, and how awesome is that? Yeah. And that's so moving when you Yeah. Your business can do something like that for somebody. It's, yeah. No, it's awful to be in pain. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's so cool. Have you guys had people, like after major surgery. Surgeries. That was a big word for me.
I mean, he was one of 'em. He was one of 'em. Yeah. We have had yeah, a lot of hips injuries that are coming in for red light. The, the cold to reduce the inflammation, to speed the healing. Anytime you can reduce inflammation and increase the blood flow to the injured areas, you're gonna improve your recovery and speed or healing.
So, yeah. Yeah. I was just talking to Dr. Swindlehurst this morning at Rev River Health. Mm-hmm. And he refers people over for the red light. Oh, rad. Yeah. And you can get 'em in there for all the things. That's it. You're like, listen guys. Yeah, they, it's so cool over here. Yeah. And you know, we've had Dr. Steve over a couple of times.
Oh, he loves it. About his wife. So Yeah. He talks about it all the time. These guys that are in the profession that know what's good for you. Yeah. It tells you a lot when they're, then they, they're a part of it. The first time we brought 'em over, I mean we were doing content, you know? Yeah. But he's like, how long do you stay in the cold punch Sam?
And I was like, I don't know, maybe 30 seconds. And he's like, well then I gotta make it a minute. I'm like, okay. And then he did the boots and he is like, how high do you do it? And I'm like, I, this is not a competition. I'm like, I do not know. Oh, that's awesome. He's so funny. Okay, so I wanna mention this before we end the podcast.
I think everyone should go over and just give it a try because I think once you go in mm-hmm. And try it, it's amazing. Mm-hmm. And it's only $25, so you're not out anything to try it the first time. Right, right, right. If you guys go to the website, it's like an introductory offer right there. Mm-hmm.
But if you guys want come over to my Instagram, if you comment. On any post or even just send me the word degree, it'll send you the link for the $25 offer. 'cause I have a lot of people do that. Yeah, yeah. They're like, how do I get it? And I was like, just DM me degree. Yeah. You know? Yeah. And they're like, oh look at that.
You were so funny yesterday. 'cause you were D messaging me and you were hitting all my trigger words. And I was like, I'm so sorry. He was DMing me and it was like degree. And then he said Scottsdale and it was sending him all these different Oh yeah. Awesome. I was like, sorry. I'm like, man, she's quick.
It's the automation. Yeah. Oh yeah. No, it's great. But I was like embarrassed 'cause it was sending ones that had nothing to do with anything, you know? Yeah, yeah. No, it was good. Yeah. But if you guys DM me degree, you can find it there. I think you guys are super, super awesome. I think, you know, always starting a new business too is like a little act of bravery.
Mm-hmm. For sure. You have to put yourself out there. It'd be a little bit crazy. Mm-hmm. And you know, you have those days where you're like, what have I done? Yep. Oh yeah. And then you have those days where you're like, I am amazing. Yeah. It's a wild ride for sure. Yeah. It's been really, really rewarding. The, the emotions have probably been the most surprising thing for me because of what people feel when they come in and they experience what the therapies have done for their bodies and the emotional reaction that they have to, that that's been.
Really awesome. Like it just fills the bucket. Yeah. You're doing something that really changes people's lives. Mm-hmm. Because I'm sure you looked at a lot of franchise, you know, you could have opened a subway. Oh yeah. Yeah. You know, but you're doing something that literally changes people's lives. Right, right.
It's pretty cool. And we're, and it, we're building relationships because of that. Right. Yeah. And there's a lot of people that we've got to know that we never would've otherwise. Yeah. Oh, for sure. You know, you guys are gonna get to that point though, where you're in the grocery store and your kids are like, oh, dang it.
You know? They're like, hi. You know what I mean? I've never really had best friends, but I'm getting a lot of best friends right now and it feels really good. Yeah. I have to say, you guys were so kind. One of the things that really. Stuck out to me the most. As you know, my grandma just passed away. Mm. And I was coming in, in between, you know, while I was like, Hey, she's passing, you know.
Then I was leaving town, coming back, and one of the girls at the front desk was so kind that day she was like, are you okay? And I was like, no, you know? And I was like, just thank you for being nice to me. Yeah, that's good to hear. So that like meant a lot to me. That's good to hear. Yeah. So anyways, we can find you on Instagram.
What's your Instagram handle? LiveWell St. George. Yep. And then what's your website? Degree wellness.com. You kinda have to dig through locations to find us, but yeah, if you go to locations and then St. George, you'll find us, and I'll just DM me the word degree, right? Yeah. But on the website, degree wellness, you'll be able to find a lot of information about the brand, about degree wellness, about all the therapies that are in there.
The IVs, the nutrient shots and everything, degree, they're on that page as well. Awesome. And I have the app, so I just like book everything on the app. Is that something you get after you join or You can download it any time and you can book a session that way. Okay. 'cause that's so easy just to do.
Yeah, it's, I screwed it up so much though. They had to text me yesterday or the day before, and they're like, did you know you booked two at the same time? I'm like, thank you, because no, yeah, we usually, usually call to confirm. Make sure everything's ready. I know the one day you called me and you're like, do you know you have this and this?
And I was like, oh my gosh, why can I not book this? So you guys are great. Honestly, thank you guys for taking the time to be on the podcast today. I appreciate your time. Of course. You know, keep doing the work. Yeah, we'll do appreciate it. Thanks for having us. Yeah, thanks.
