Vicki talks with Donny and Maura about her 2020 book “Growing Up on the Gridiron: Football, Friendship, and the Tragic Life of Owen Thomas.” Vicki shares with the co-hosts who was Owen Thomas, how she researched for the book and, the love of football. The trio discusses the 2015 movie “Concussion” and how the discovery of CTE by Bennett Omalu affected the NFL and the sport of football.

Vicki Mayk has had a long career as a journalist and an editor of university alumni magazines, most recently at Wilkes University. Her nonfiction book, Growing Up On the Gridiron: Football, Friendship, and the Tragic Life of Owen Thomas, was published by Beacon Press and tells the story of a player who also was a milestone case in the research into football’s concussion crisis. She joins us to discuss Concussion and the events that started the controversy about head injuries in football. Her love affair with football began at the age of nine, when her father first took her to a Pittsburgh Steelers game.
