Hi, I'm Melody and I'm Candi and you're listening to Quirks, Bumps, and Bruises.
0:00:08 - Candi
So on today's episode, we are talking about things that you would bring back from the time that you were born. We asked Wendy to come back in here with us and she was talking this morning about bringing back stereos Stereos, Because you were born when I was born in the 1970s.
0:00:26 - Wendy
but I have fond memories of those back stereos Stereos, because you were born when I was born in 1970s, but I have fond memories of those big stereos. You know, with a turntable you put your cassette in there.
0:00:34 - Candi
You're not talking about a boom box.
0:00:36 - Melody
No, I know what she's talking about?
0:00:38 - Wendy
I'm talking about a big stereo.
0:00:40 - Melody
It's like a piece of furniture.
0:00:41 - Wendy
Yeah Right, yeah Right, it's got speakers. Speakers on the side. You got your turntable in the middle a little further down, you can when you say turntable, what's a turntable?
0:00:55 - Melody
man, I feel old. That's a record player. Do you know what a record player is? Yeah, yeah, these big round.
0:01:01 - Candi
Vinyl things can't. So that's a record player, is what you call a turntable. Yeah, okay, I know what that is, but these are literally pieces of furniture.
0:01:10 - Melody
In fact, my dad still has a piece of furniture like that. It's long Candi, it's like a long table looking thing almost. But the center of it will open up and inside of it is where you put your records.
0:01:24 - Wendy
Wow. I actually have one that my grandmother had. I still have 8-track tapes that play in it, Like I have that in my house.
0:01:34 - Melody
Wow, and it still works.
0:01:35 - Candi
Now that is old. So what was first? Records or 8-tracks, 8-tracks.
0:01:40 - Wendy
That was first Mm-mm. No, mm-mm.
0:01:43 - Melody
Records. Records are first 8-. That was first Mm-mm.
0:01:44 - Wendy
No Mm-mm Records Records are first.
0:01:45 - Melody
Eight tracks are before cassettes, eight tracks, and then cassettes, and then CDs, and now everything's going to digital?
0:01:51 - Candi
Yeah, because typically everything gets smaller, right as we progress, except me.
0:01:56 - Melody
I'm getting bigger as I progress.
0:01:58 - Candi
Same. You're not technology, though. That's okay, that's expected, that's expected.
0:02:03 - Melody
So, Candi, what was something you wanted to bring back? I remember you, Candi, had a thing for jelly shoes. I still do.
0:02:10 - Candi
Do you remember? Were jelly shoes popular with either one of y'all, or was that just mine?
0:02:16 - Melody
Because this was the 80s, early early 90s, Jelly shoes were popular for my children.
0:02:19 - Wendy
Oh, okay, not for me. Well, they were a little popular with me because I remember like going out and trying to get different colors.
0:02:26 - Candi
Oh, I love them, oh my goodness and my favorite thing, because I'm so ADD. I've always been a child with ADD and I would be able to like pick the rocks out of the bottoms of them.
0:02:38 - Wendy
Yes.
0:02:38 - Candi
Remember that Off the heel of them and I remember just that was the coolest thing.
0:02:50 - Melody
If I could get all the rocks out of them, like while I was sitting listening to the teacher, like it was just so cool she didn't have very much. Yeah, now, did you decorate your jelly shoes? We didn't. You didn't have that. I thought there were little things that you could put on top of those, or something or is that another kind? Of get me started on Crocs.
0:03:04 - Candi
So yeah, jelly shoes, really big hair. I loved when I was a kid, like crimp Do you remember? Crimping your hair is what they called it. My mom would do that and my hair would be like eight sizes larger than it typically is.
Now, that's 80s, right, yeah. But see, I was born in the 80s so I didn't really get to enjoy the fashion that's 80s, right, yeah? But see, I was born in the 80s so I didn't really get to enjoy the fashion of the 80s. And I would love to be able to enjoy that, because I love those bright, bold colors. Yeah, sweat bands, just cute stuff.
0:03:36 - Melody
Well, I enjoyed the fashion of the 60s and the 70s, the 80s and the 90s and the 2000s.
0:03:41 - Candi
Bless your heart. You wore a lot of clothes.
0:03:43 - Melody
I have gone through a lot of things, but kind of off topic here, I never was a fad chaser. No, I'm still not a fad chaser, because here's my, here's my theory on that. Candi knows this. Just because it's in fashion doesn't mean you need to be wearing it, it's true.
0:04:03 - Wendy
True, so good, I'm so sure I don't need bell bottoms If you write well.
0:04:07 - Melody
So you, you may love them. They don't mean you need to be wearing them. If you don't believe me, just go to Walmart. Exactly, take a look around. Oh my God, that's all I'm saying. Take a look around. So I never did. I was always behind. There were these ugly shoes back in the day called Wallabies.
0:04:28 - Candi
Which came back when, like middle school for me yes, that was popular.
0:04:34 - Melody
Ugliest shoes ever.
0:04:35 - Candi
Now, I missed that one. I must have missed that one.
0:04:37 - Melody
They were just ugly, but they were so popular. And I just remember telling my mom and my mom would say would you like a pair? And I'm like why? Because they're ugly, they're hip. I never was pressured to be the hip, cool person. Never Remember the denim skirts. I didn't wear denim skirts. I went to public school.
0:05:00 - Candi
So Candi can talk to you about denim skirts. I had to wear the denim skirts when they weren't cool, so this was after the fact. We just had to because that was a part of modesty. That was a part of our school's recommendations. I did not appreciate the denim skirts.
0:05:12 - Melody
Apparently Wendy liked them and she went to public school and wore them.
0:05:15 - Wendy
No, no, no, no, y'all are mistaken. No, these are the denim skirts that were above the knee.
0:05:20 - Candi
Oh honey, no. Mini skirts, that were denim skirts. Well honey, no I know Jesus.
0:05:26 - Melody
Should we stop and have prayer right now for Wendy? I didn't say I'll wear them now, yeah, so let's talk about fads now, shall we Y'all? And I love you too. Here we go. Well, you know what I'm going to say.
0:05:42 - Candi
Leggings. I know and I know.
0:05:44 - Melody
I'm going to get down the road for this from a lot of people, as you should, yes, but that is one of those things.
0:05:56 - Candi
It just because they're popular don't mean you need to be wearing them. Honey, it ain't popular for me, it's the comfort, because every bump Exactly.
0:05:59 - Melody
Crease, wrinkle and everything you got shown through them.
0:06:04 - Wendy
Things, no, no, you wear the long shirts and the cute shirts to cover that up and then you look two feet tall.
0:06:10 - Melody
If you're short, I'm okay with that.
0:06:13 - Candi
For the covers of the honey, I'm going to tell you you, put on a pair of leggings. You will never.
0:06:17 - Melody
You won't wear them again. No, I'm not wearing leggings. I don't have the body type for leggings, well, honey, I don't either, but I do.
0:06:24 - Wendy
I know and that's exactly my point. I think she's saying something about us. I think she is.
0:06:33 - Melody
So I'm going to get off leggings because I know 99% of women wear them A lot of you shouldn't be. You're the only woman who doesn't wear them. For the sake of America, I'm not wearing those. So you're welcome, America. Apparently, others don't follow the same suit. Let's go to another piece of clothing. I should say, or shoe, that I think I don't get it. What Crocs? We talked about it a second ago, so I get. Now. This is what I do get. I do get that. They are very comfortable. Are you wearing Crocs today, Wendy?
0:07:11 - Candi
Yes, I have my Crocs, she's got sandal, crocs.
0:07:15 - Wendy
They make pretty ones now. These are my favorite. I wear them all the time.
0:07:19 - Melody
sandals those I get, I get those. I'm talking all the time. Sandals those I get, I get those.
0:07:23 - Candi
I'm talking about the slide in, like the little mules that have holes in the tops of them that you can decorate now with those, and maybe I'm not talking about Crocs, except for I know the garden looking Crocs.
0:07:35 - Melody
If you want to wear those in the garden, I think that's fine. You wear those to church. You've got a problem? Oh honey, you can decorate Crocs.
0:07:40 - Candi
Now they have headlights for them. You can put clip lights on them now. Now, like, why, yeah, really, when you're outside in the dark you need a little vision and also you can put I have tie-dye Crocs and they are the cutest. They're like aqua and pink and they're tie-dyed and I have like rhinestone heart giblet this is the same person that likes jelly shoes rhinestone heart gibbets, and they're just cute, so you can dress them up. Now, honey, they're not just them. Garden shoes okay now.
0:08:13 - Melody
So I want you to be honest with me. Both of you, Wendy and Candi, both of you be honest. I'm gonna ask you a question do you think they are cute shoes?
0:08:21 - Candi
no, yeah, like the ones I have are, but like just the solid, bland ones. No, but I have. But do you?
0:08:28 - Melody
put those on with your what are they called gibbets, gibbets.
0:08:31 - Candi
You put those on with your cute gibbets that apparently have headlights and you look at yourself in the mirror and you go I just look so cute today oh, not necessarily, but I mean they're cute shoes and when I'm like going to the grocery store and the comfort that they provide, I get the comfort, totally get the comfort.
0:08:47 - Wendy
See.
0:08:47 - Melody
I don't get the comfort.
0:08:48 - Wendy
I've tried on the Crocs and I've wore them around a little bit. I admit that I bought a pair but I was not very happy with the comfort. Now my sandal parts. I lovec. Sandals are amazing.
0:09:01 - Melody
I would wear those in a heartbeat.
0:09:02 - Candi
Regular crocs I love. My husband has a camouflage pair and you can't see them, that's right. Isn't that right? Do you know how you take the band? That's the best kind For real. You know the band that you can like, take off and put them on in the back to help them be more like secure, which is even worse, jake calls it, I'm putting my four-wheel drive on and he'll put them on.
Yeah, yeah, it's crazy but you can wear those y'all. You can wear them anywhere and when you're done, just hose them off. They're the most wonderful thing. I love them.
0:09:36 - Wendy
Well, that's practical I mean if you stepped in the mud hole. All you have to do is just right, hose it off. And but think about it you're wearing a pair of shoes that you're hosing off.
0:09:44 - Melody
I realize how old I am in this conversation, so let's move to another shoe. Now I'm going to ask you this question Do you think they are pretty shoes Like? Are they cute, right, all right? Birkenstocks.
0:10:00 - Candi
No, well, they make a hundred different Birkenstocks, but are you talking about the ones with, like, the two large bands and the buckle like on them?
0:10:07 - Melody
I don't care what kind of Birkenstock, no, they make some cute ones Because you can put headlights on them.
0:10:14 - Candi
No, you cannot in those. If so, they're missing the market. They should be. But I'm going to say I just purchased a pair of these. Now I can't afford Birkenstocks because I work in the ministry, so I get the fake ones that are like a fraction of the cost. But I did just find some gold looking. They're really cute and stylish and pretty. So, yes, yes, those are, but they're very in fashion, are they pretty?
0:10:42 - Melody
No, and again, just because something is popular don't necessarily mean you need to be wearing. Let's talk about something you wear Missy, are them hey dudes? Yes, and I do. I do wear hey dudes. They are unisex shoes, which is kind of the wallaby that's warped into something. They look like, they look like bedroom slippers. I think they look comfortable to me. They are, and they really are comfortable. They really are If they look comfortable they're not cute.
0:11:07 - Candi
And that's true. It is, that is true. Crocs, yeah. So yes, those hey dudes are everything right now. They come in every color and every shade of everything. Men and women both wear them. They're unisex shoes, right, I mean? I think it's because they with everything.
0:11:21 - Melody
But I will tell you, Wendy, you didn't know, Candi and I back in the day, but back in the day we used to go to these concert events. It could be Singing in the Sun, it could be the Quartet Convention, it could be. Gatlinburg Gathering we would walk and stand for hours on end.
0:11:40 - Candi
Even me, yeah, and high heel shoes. You are my age now and I would never do that.
0:11:50 - Melody
Right, well, no, not quite A few years off. A few years off, oh that's crazy, isn't it? There's no way. Yes, and we would go. And yeah, there's pictures of us and like I'm talking heels, oh no, and this one especially, you would call them stilettos, right I? Don't know if it was a stiletto that high, but it was high. I can show you some pictures heels.
0:12:14 - Candi
Heels oh yeah, and didn't think a thing about it, that's just what you did.
0:12:16 - Melody
We were dressed to the nines. Now, when we go anywhere, we want to be in our pajamas.
0:12:28 - Wendy
I know, john, I know right Candi has changed the most. It's so funny to watch her change. Well, I was on the market then, you know she was, so she was wearing stiletto heels. She was, she was so cute Candi was.
0:12:36 - Melody
She would dress to the night. She would look adorable and I loved it.
0:12:39 - Candi
I love, I love. I still do. I can't wear it now just because I can't fit into anything cute. But who wants to wear it now? I know right, but I loved it and yeah, I mean, it was a different time. And I've had a hip replacement since then and I'm sure I'm sure that's why you probably had the hip replacement because of the shoes that you wore.
0:12:59 - Melody
That's what I'm talking about. That's what I just said.
0:13:13 - Wendy
I'm sure that's why I had to have it. The only time I wore heels like really high, like stiletto heels, was my wedding day, when I got married, really, because my hubby is like six, three something and I'm like four, two, yeah, and and so I wanted, just for once, to be a little taller for pictures for pictures for yeah, but I will tell you it was kind of hard walking down the aisle in those heels. Had to practice a couple of days to wear those things.
0:13:32 - Candi
Oh, yeah, I'm gonna tell you, I've seen some friends of mine who are my age and older who are wearing shoes like this now and I like it because, as a not tall person, I enjoy anything that can add some extra height and they have these shoes. They're like, I guess Melody platform shoes were those popular, so now they are. They're like making sneakers with platforms so they're more comfortable, but they give you a little bit of height. So, yeah, I've been looking at those.
0:14:02 - Wendy
Well, let me ask you this when did wedges come in? I can't do those.
0:14:07 - Melody
I like wedges because it gives you a little bit of support. I'm actually wearing those today. You're not having your body on one little skinny heel. You've got a little bit of support with wedges.
0:14:19 - Wendy
Maybe I'm just not coordinated enough. I just don't think I. I grew up with tennis shoes, adidas, new Balance and now Pumas, like that's what I wore, but they're always cute.
0:14:31 - Melody
