Most of the ocean floor has never been seen by human eyes. Below 200 meters sunlight disappears entirely. Pressure becomes crushing. Temperature drops to near freezing. For most of scientific history the assumption was that life in those conditions would be minimal or absent.

That assumption turned out to be wrong in ways that are changing multiple fields simultaneously.

Israeli marine scientists exploring deep sea environments off the Israeli coast have found organisms thriving in total darkness under extreme pressure near methane seeps on the ocean floor. Some of these organisms survive conditions that biology previously considered incompatible with life. Understanding how they do it has implications for medicine, for climate science and for the search for life in environments beyond Earth.

This conversation examines what Israeli deep sea research has found and why scientists working on questions as different as cancer treatment and Mars exploration are paying attention to what is being discovered beneath the Mediterranean.
