In the last installment of this series, Pastor Jackson stresses the importance of a servant doing the will of their master, and not just doing things according to their own preferences and comfort level. When the Master returns, will we hear well done or will He find that we buried our assignment? Take a listen and share!

This is our last installment of this particular series, and I do apologize for not being here on last week. Uh, we had some other uh obligations that we had to take care of. We were not able to uh get the podcast done. But here we are again on this week. Uh, this is part six. Again, this is our last installment of this series. Does anybody want to be a servant? I pray uh that you all have been blessed by what we have been sharing uh thus far. Scripture uh this week, scripture, Matthew chapter 25, verses 14 through 30. Again, Matthew chapter 25, verses 14 through 30. I'm gonna break that down into three sections as we go through uh our notes on today. I want to make this uh statement very quickly before we get uh to our notes on today. Uh Matthew 25 uh is one of the most important uh chapters in the Bible. I encourage you all to read Matthew 25. And again, when you think about things that are happening in the nation right now, uh read Matthew chapter 25 to find out what Jesus said, uh, the Christian attitude and how we are supposed to treat people, really being servants. Uh, Matthew 25 outlines what Jesus uh kind of drilled into us about what it means to be a servant. And I got a clue for y'all. It deals with the less fortunate, it deals with people that are not like us. We are called to be servants, we are not called to be rulers over people. So I encourage you all uh to read Matthew chapter 25 in its entirety, but uh for the purposes of today, uh we're gonna look at verses 14 through 30. Uh, and so let me say this as we open on today, as we open this last installment of this series, um, we talk about being a servant. And uh, I think one of the things that's happened to us uh as society has kind of uh changed our mindset as it relates to being a servant. And we have uh we have decided that servants are beneath. We have decided that servants do not deserve any type of honor or any type of respect. Uh they're supposed to wait on us hand and foot. And so when you hear the word servant, again, when you hear it in a in a worldly sense, uh we we tend to see it as a demeaned position. We seem to see it as slavery, as subservient, right? And uh subservient, rather, forgive me. Um, and so I think this has kind of messed us up uh because as the question uh in this particular series says, does anybody want to be a servant? Now, Christians, those of us in the faith, uh we ought to all, we ought to have already had a different view of what it meant to be a servant, because we understand that our Savior said he came as a servant. But you gotta be in Bible class, you gotta study your Bible so that you can understand that the connotation that the world has put on servant is not the one that God intended. And so when we uh when we kind of gloss over, we kind of look past the word servant, and really when I really digging into what it means, and by the way, this affects how we treat people in society who serve us. Like if you're in a restaurant, uh you're dealing with a waiter or a waitress, uh, this mentality, y'all, affects how we treat people who are serving us. And we have uh treated the position of servant, I'll say this very quickly before we read scripture, as if the position of servant has no honor. And this is probably why uh so many of our churches are so uh title obsessed, because we want to be seen above instead of seen as a servant. So when Jesus, as we kicked off the series uh uh so many weeks ago, when Jesus says the greatest among you must be the servant, uh, we have decided, no, I'm not gonna be anybody's servant, and still claim to be Christian, and yet Jesus constantly talks about being servants. So, how do we get this messed up? How do we get this screwed up? So let's go to scripture very quickly. Again, I told you Matthew chapter 25, verse 14 through 30, but we're gonna break this down into three sections because there's a lot of verses here, and I want to dig into those verses and uh uh coming up here at the end of the month of the Lord said so uh at FTK. I'm gonna teach from here. I taught Sunday school from here uh at the end of last year because I knew what our theme was gonna be coming into this year a season of service. And so I talked about being a servant, y'all. And and I'm telling you, uh, you can teach these things in church, but not everybody wants to hear. We're gonna see this in the scripture on today. So let's go to Matthew chapter 25. Let's start here. Matthew 25, verses 14 through 18. We're gonna start right there again. Matthew chapter 25, verses 14 through 18. Again, as usual, for those of you that are watching on the video side, I will pull that up on the screen for you. We'll share it from the New Living Translation. So, one more time, Matthew chapter 25, verses 14 through 18. Here is what the Bible says from the New Living Translation. Again, the kingdom of heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants, y'all see that, and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last, dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip. The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earn five more. The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master's money. That's Matthew chapter 25, verses 14 through 18. So now, Jesus is giving giving an illustration. The Bible says the parable of the servants, right? Other translations may say the parable of the talents, but a talent is a measure of money. It wasn't a measure of ability, right? Uh uh, so uh we'll that's deep Bible class. We'll get to that another time. Now, Jesus starts off by saying the kingdom of heaven can be illustrated this way. And y'all, as Christians, uh, we are trying to get to heaven. Uh, we are trying to be with Jesus. And he says the kingdom of heaven can be illustrated like this. Now, Jesus is giving you an illustration to help you understand something spiritual. So he says, I want to give, I want to paint a picture for you, right? So watch this, y'all. First note, God hasn't gifted us according to our aspirations, he's gifted us according to our abilities. Are y'all here today? He says he called the servants together and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. And the Bible says he gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last, dividing it in proportion to their abilities, in proportion to what they were capable of, the God-given abilities. And God has not gifted us. I want to say it again. God has not gifted us according to our aspirations, he's gifted us according to our abilities. And so when God has bestowed a gift upon you, and scripture tells us that everybody has at least one, God has given you the gift according to the abilities that He's given you. Now, why does this matter in the relation in relation to servanthood? What we do in the church, y'all, all of us are not responsible at the same level. Some of us are responsible for more because we have been given more abilities. God has gifted us to do more things. Hear this: it doesn't make you better than anyone, but it does give you more responsibility. And I think we've got it confused because we see people in our natural state, not our spiritual state. In our natural state, we see people with more abilities. And sometimes, y'all, we get jealous. And then sometimes some of us that have more abilities, we demand titles in the church because I'm have more abilities. I should be called this, I should be called something other than just servant, uh, servant with five gifts. I should I shouldn't be uh referred to as the same as servant with one gift. Give me the title that says this servant has five gifts. Y'all understand? And so we have chased after these titles, and we understand that titles are given in the Bible. When the Apostle Paul talks in Ephesians about how God has given apostles and preachers and bishops and teachers in the church, and we we understand that, but y'all, that's for our that's that's for us. And it relates and as it relates to what God is saying, God is saying you all are servants, you're servant with more talent, you're servant with less talent, but you're all servants, and you all serve a purpose. And I'm gonna give all of you something to do for the kingdom. I've shared this to y'all before before I move on to my next note. I shared this with y'all before, as you all, some of you that follow me, you know me, you know I know how to do a lot of things. Here we are podcasting right now. We've shared uh through from the many books that I've written, right? I'm pastoring, I'm I'm um, I'm preaching, have a radio broadcast. God has gifted me with a lot of things. My family was here, they would tell you there's a lot of stuff around the house he knows how to fix too. God has given me certain abilities, but every ability that I have, y'all, has servant attached to it. Everything that God has equipped me to do, he expects me to use it to serve people. Will it bless me? Will he bless me for using it? Absolutely. But the primary goal ought to be use this as a servant. You use it as a service to the people. Serve the kingdom with all these gifts, all these talents, all these abilities I've given you. Be of service to the kingdom. So again, God hasn't gifted us according to our aspirations. Y'all hear this today before I move on. I want to make sure I draw this out a little bit more. I know that we all have some aspirations. I know there's some things that we want to do in life. And I got news for you today that God has gifted you with certain things to be of service to the kingdom, but you can add to your talents. You can always grow your gifts, you can always add. We're going to talk about it today. You can add some things, and God will allow you to add some things that fit your aspirations. But God has gifted you to serve the kingdom. I hope you all understand. I hope you're making that distinction. He hasn't gifted us according to what we think we ought to be in life, he's gifted us according to the abilities that he has placed in us, right? And so it's according to our abilities. Next note, the main responsibility of a servant is to do the will of their master. The main responsibility of a servant is to do the will of their master. So, as a servant, by the way, this is why people are struggling in the church. Strangely enough, people are struggling in the church to be called servant because they don't want to have to serve, they don't want to have to do nobody else's will but what they want to do. And by the way, you can delegate to people all you want. If they don't want to serve, and I'll talk about that today, they're not gonna serve. But the main responsibility of a servant, so if I call myself a servant of God, my main responsibility is to God. Lord, what would you have me to do with how you have gifted me, how you have empowered me, what would you have me to do, God? Your will, as we say, as we say in that model prayer, right? Your will be done. And again, I say this to our people all the time, I say, you gotta stop just saying things that you don't mean. Hold on to it until you're ready to mean it, right? No, no, you know, y'all here today. Don't tell me you love me if you don't really love me. Because it's because y'all, y'all, y'all with me. I know the ladies are with me there. Don't tell me you love me if you don't really love me, because there's something that comes with that. There's an expectation that comes with that. When you tell me you love me, there's something that comes with that, right? And so again, the main responsibility, the main thing as a servant of God is to the will of your master. What does God want me to do? Not what people want to do, not what my aspirations are. What does God want me to do? That is the main responsibility of a servant. Next note. We all have at least one gift, and as I've already mentioned, but we're not all interested in a servant's work. One more time. We all have at least one gift, but we're not all interested in a servant's work. Again, if people don't want to serve, you can delegate all day, they're not gonna serve. You can say, I need you right here. If they don't want to do it, they're not gonna do it. And God help you if they show up anyway and they don't want to do it, they're not giving you maximum effort. Y'all hear me? They're not gonna do it right. They're gonna do it halfway. You're gonna wish you had done it yourself. Y'all hear me? Everybody has a gift, God has given everybody something. But right here in the text, uh, we're gonna see it. Everybody's not interested in doing a servant's work. And you find that out, again, I hate to say this, but you find that out at the church level when it's time to do some work. People love to come to worship service. They don't want to come to work. They say, no, I came here to get this, get my praise on, get this, get that, get that. I didn't come here to work. No, I don't want to be an usher. I don't want to be a trustee of the church. I don't want to help the pastor do anything. I don't want to be a part of any initiatives. I don't want to be a part of the youth ministry. I don't want to be, I didn't come here for all that. I came here to get my praise. I came here to hear a word for me, but I did not come here to work. And y'all, everybody's got something to do in the church. I stress the FTK all the time. I said, you can't keep sitting down on your gift. Everybody's got something to do. It's not just the pastor. And I was sharing with my Thursday Bible class a couple days ago before I get to the next scripture. I said, I said, the one thing uh that we love to be a part of in the church is the idea ministry. Uh, we love to be a part of the idea ministry. Pastor, I think we ought to do this. Pastor, I think this will be great for the church. Pastor, I think we need to have this right here in the church. And then when you look at them and say, okay, well, when do you want to get started? Oh, no, no, no, Pastor, I don't want to do it. I just think we ought to have it. Y'all find out how to do it, but I think it'll be nice if we have it. I don't want to do it, Pastor. Because people love ideas, right? They want to be a part of the idea ministry. Amen. So let's go to next verse. So again, we look down at verse 18. One servant, before we get to the next scripture, verse 18 says, again, but the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master's money. The person who just received the one gift, they said, I'm gonna bury this gift. I'm not gonna do it, I'm not gonna do anything. I'm just coming to church to be seen and to sit down. Now let's go to Matthew chapter 25, verse 19 to 23. Let's go here. Uh, New Living Translation, as usual, we'll pull it up on the screen for you, those of you watching on the video side. Again, Matthew 25, verses 19 through 23. Here is what the Bible says. After a long time, their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money. The servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward with five more and said, Master, you gave me five bags of silver to invest, and I have earned five more. The master was full of praise. Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate together. The servant who had received the two bags of silver came forward and said, Master, you gave me two bags of silver to invest, and I have earned two more. The master said, Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so I now give you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate together. That is Matthew chapter 25, verses 19 through 23. So now we see here that there's a celebration that happens when we do what God told us to do with what He has entrusted us with. And God says, I'm going to add more responsibility. And I remember time before I get to my next note, I remember a time uh on the job where we wanted to be promoted. We wanted to be promoted. And we understood that yes, there's gonna be more money at the next level, but there's also gonna be more responsibility. And those of us that desire promotion, we didn't shrink at that. We said we welcome more responsibility. But y'all, we'll get to it in the next section. We got some people that said, no, I I got one gift and I buried it. That lets you know where I am. Next note accountability to the master is what will be required of every servant. Accountability, the Bible says that the master came back from a long trip, and he says, and I can hear my grandmama say, give an account. Tell me what you have been doing since I've been gone. Let me throw this in for free. What were you doing when nobody was watching? I tell my 13-year-old all the time, I said, This is how I know whether or not you're obedient. Not by what you do when you're in front of me, but what you do when I'm not there. Do you do the work? Are you responsible when I'm not there? Or do we have to be with you all the time in order for you to behave? Accountability to the master is what will be required of every servant. So whatever God has invested in you and given to you, He's going to come back around and say, What you've been up to. Y'all, and I say this and I pray that you receive it in the right spirit. When the Lord calls me home, I want him to be able to say, He used every tool, gift, and ability that I gave him. And the evidence is before all of us. I want, I want to hear well done, as we as we used to say, like we say it all the time, right? If you want to hear well done, you gotta do well. I want the master to be able to look at me and say, I gave you this month. Talent and then you worked hard and you turned it into this. And as you went, you gained more responsibility. I want to hear that, y'all. I want to hear that. But the accountability is what the master will require. Let me move on because I'm running out of time. Watch this. Next, God wants to hear what you've done for him, not what you did to them. Remember, I told you Matthew 25, especially the rest of this chapter, after these verses we're studying today, Matthew 25 will tell you exactly what God expects out of us as Christians. How he expects us to serve the less fortunate, those that are in prison, those that are hungry, uh, those that are this, those that, those that are foreigner. Uh, all of Matthew 25, Jesus outlines this. And God wants to hear what you've done for him. He says, I want you to tell me what you did for me. And I, y'all, I believe that many of us are running around. Like when we get to the kingdom, God is gonna be sitting around listening to our complaints. I got news for you today. God is not going to ask you what you did to them, how they treated you. I've told this you all this before. I said, God is not going to ask you about what anybody did to you when you come face to face. He's gonna ask you what you did. He's gonna ask you about your actions. Y'all, y'all see, when the master comes back, he says, everybody give an account. The person with the five, he didn't say, What did the one do? The person with the two, he didn't say, What did the one with five do? He says, What did you do? God wants to hear what you've done for him, what you've done for the kingdom. This is what I want to hear. Don't don't bother me about what you did to other people, about how you fixed the country, how you rounded up all the immigrants and threw them out. God is not going to ask you any of those things. God is going to say, How did you treat people? What did you do for me? And you doing all that other stuff ain't for me. That was for you. Next note serving isn't done. Hear this serving isn't done according to our preferences, it's done according to what God has required. So now I told you all before we get to this last set of notes here, that sometimes people won't serve in church because it's not their preference. Let me tell you a challenge uh uh that pastors have. I I know that I've had it, uh, is you seeing what people have been gifted to do according to God, and you saying the Lord needs you in this position because you recognize the gift, and people say, I'm not doing that. Because it's not what they want to do. And it's a challenge, y'all, in the faith, because you have to get people out of what you want to do and get them into what does God want you to do. I'll say this very quickly, and I've shared this to y'all before. And I said, I said, anytime somebody asks me, Pastor, they will say to me, Pastor, I'm trying to find my purpose, trying to figure out what my purpose is. I said, Your purpose will never begin with you. If it's a God-given purpose, and everybody that has purpose is God-given, if you have a God-given purpose, it'll never begin with you. Your purpose begins with other people. God did not send you here to be self-serving, he sent you here to serve. And so at the end of the day, when you have people who won't serve at church, sometimes it's because it's not what they want to do, it's not what they envision themselves. And again, God, you're not serving according to your preferences. You're serving according to what God has required. Remember, I said to you all already today, before we get to this last scripture, God hasn't gifted us according to our aspirations, He's gifted us according to the abilities that we have. You can still have aspirations, but when it comes to serving God, you need to do what He told you to do. I'm gonna be over a little bit today. Y'all bear with me. Let's go to scripture. Last few verses. Let's deal with that servant that didn't do anything with their gift. Matthew chapter 25, verses 24 through 30 again. Matthew 25, verses 24 through 30 again, New Living Translation. We'll pull up on the screen on the video side. Here is what the Bible says. Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn't plant, and gathering crops you didn't cultivate. I was afraid I would lose your money. So I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back. But the master replied, You wicked and lazy servant, if you knew I harvest harvest crops, I didn't plant and gathered crops, I didn't cultivate, why didn't you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it. Then he ordered Take the money from this servant and give it to the one with ten bags of silver. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. Now throw this useless servant into outer darkness, where there'll be weeping and gnashing of teeth. That is Matthew chapter 25, verses 24 through 30. Y'all see what happened here? The person said, I buried your gift. You gave me something, and I chose not to use it. In fact, I buried it. When a pastor says, I see you in this capacity, we buried. Here, you can have it back. Y'all know how many people have walked out of church because they didn't want to do what God called them to do. They said, You can have it back, God. Ain't that something that God can gift you and you say, I'm just gonna give it, I'm not gonna do nothing with it. Matter of fact, I'm gonna bury it and I'll give it back to you, God. We gotta be careful. Next note the refusal to serve is a rejection of the master. The refusal to do what a servant's job is, the refusal to do what you've been called to do is a rejection of the master. Where you have decided I'm not going to do it, and you think you're hurting other folk, but they're not the ones who gifted you, they're not the ones who called you to the work. When you don't want to do for people, you're rejecting the master who has gifted you to do for other people. Now, something else that was said in the text here is that listen, if you got one gift, don't be worried about somebody with five gifts. Work your one gift, and God will bless you with more, and eventually you might have five or ten gifts. But you got to work what God has given you. I'm telling you this, I didn't always know how to do all the things I know how to do, but I work with what I had, and God grew my gifts. Are y'all here today? But refusal to serve is a rejection of the master, and it's not a rejection of the pastor. You you can dress it up however you want. If the pastor asks you to do something, if leadership asks you to do something, you decide you don't want to do it, you ain't rejecting me. Because as you see in the text, whatever it is that God has gifted you to do, if you don't do it, God will take that gift and he'll give it to somebody else, it'll still get done. And one of the things, let me say this, I've I'm I'm over today. One of the things I think that that we've screwed up on the church is that we think that if we don't do something, that God can't get it done. Oh my, I wish we didn't have that mentality. But God has a way of showing you that what you don't do, somebody else will do. As a matter of fact, I will take what you have and put it in somebody else. And it'll get done. Next note, next note. If you refuse to serve, the least you can do is give support to the cause, but even that's not enough. So he says to the one with the one gift, he said, Listen, if you weren't gonna do nothing with it, you could at least put it in the bank. And so I could draw interest. Now, the scripture talks about the fact that the servant makes up an excuse. The servant says, Listen, I was worried about it, and I know that you uh you come and get harvest that you didn't plant and uh you gather uh that you didn't cultivate. And I want y'all to be clear on here today that that is the service description of the master. Nothing in scripture tells you that that the master is actually like that. That was the excuse the survey gave. This is why I didn't do it, because you, you, you know, you're hard on people, and I didn't want to do this and so on and so forth. But the master plays along. He said, Well, if you feel that way about me, then why didn't you at least make sure I got a return on my investment? If you thought I was this kind of person, why didn't you just contribute to the cause? If you're not gonna serve, at least put the gift up so that something can come out of it. At least invest in what they got going on in the church. But y'all, and I know a lot of people will do that. I don't want to serve, but I get my money, I get my money. I'm telling you that ain't enough. I know you think like you're doing, you feel like you're doing something. That ain't enough. You're called to serve. Some days it ain't your day to serve. Support the others that serve. But when your time comes, make sure you own your post. Because just giving money is fine. God knows how to bless that, but he called you to serve. Well, at least I gave some. I get I got news for you. He called you to serve and give. Because some of the servants are giving too. Most servants are usually givers too. You don't got to worry about them giving, they're giving and serving to make sure that what they have to do takes off. And so, again, if you refuse to serve, the least you can do is give some support. But I want you to know that support ain't enough because he's called you to serve. Last note, those that won't serve won't find a home in the kingdom. Again, I encourage you to read the rest of Matthew chapter 25. And people will say things like, Oh, you know, God loves you too much to send you to hell. And I've told people, God ain't sending nobody nowhere. He ain't sending nobody to hell, and he ain't sending nobody to heaven. People are making choices, and the scripture tells us to cast them into utter darkness. There won't be a home in the kingdom for you if you don't know how to serve. And when I say serve, I mean genuinely serve from your heart. Not just showing up, but actually being willing to be there and giving and serving as God has gifted you to serve. That's what we're called to do, y'all. And if we don't want to do it, you won't find a home in the kingdom. That's not what Pastor Jackson says, that's what your Bible says. I encourage you, read Matthew 25. That's all we got. I'm over. I pray that you all were blessed by what we had to share very quickly. Let me give you our tag as we always do.
