Tammy:
Welcome back to The Complete Guide to Wedding Photography for Couples Getting Married.
I’m your host, Tammy Blalock, and today we’re talking about a shift that makes me so excited — the world is finally starting to value authentic, candid wedding photography over posed, orchestrated images.
And let me tell you… I’ve been screaming this for years.
[Short music transition]
Tammy:
For the longest time, wedding photography was all about the perfect pose, the perfect lighting, and the perfect backdrop. Everything was meticulously directed — hand here, chin there, bouquet at this angle.
And look, there’s nothing wrong with beautiful, posed imagery. There’s an art to that, and it takes skill. But what’s happening now is that couples are realizing something deeper: what makes a photo timeless isn’t perfection — it’s emotion.
It’s the messy, real, unguarded moments.
The laughter you didn’t plan.
The tears that weren’t scheduled.
The look between you and your partner that no one else noticed.
That’s the kind of photography I live for.
Tammy:
And here’s the funny part — I didn’t always feel this way.
When I first started, I actually thought photojournalistic photographers shot documentary-style because they didn’t know how to pose people. I thought it was a lack of skill.
But after years of shooting, studying, and growing, I realized I was wrong. Completely wrong.
Because being a true photojournalist — someone who can see the story without controlling it — actually takes more intuition, trust, and awareness than directing ever did.
I’m not orchestrating moments anymore. I’m documenting them.
And there’s a massive difference.
[Short music transition]
Tammy:
So when I see couples today gravitating toward images that feel real, I can’t help but smile. Finally, the world gets it.
Candid, documentary-style photography isn’t about chaos or laziness. It’s about honesty.
It’s about having the patience to observe, the intuition to anticipate, and the restraint to not interfere.
If you want wedding photos that make you feel something ten, twenty, or thirty years from now — look for a photographer who documents, not one who directs.
Tammy:
Because when the makeup fades, the flowers dry, and the cake is gone, what lasts is the emotion you can still feel in your photos.
Those are the moments that become legacy.
