Homelessness Could Happen To Anyone with Salvation Army Case Manager Belinda Robbie

Tess Griffin Season 1 Episode 46

Belinda Robbie is a Case Manager who has supported women & children at The Salvation Army Ballarat for the past 12yrs. At just 17 years of age, Belinda found herself homeless and expecting her first child with the support of services like the Salvation Army she was able to get back on her feet and find a home.
Inspired by her own experience in this system and wanting to give back, Belinda went on to study and is now supporting women & families who were just like her all those years ago.

The Salvation Army Homelessness Ballarat offers a range of services & programs assisting families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. This is something that could happen to anyone, it only takes one or two significant life events that can turn everything upside down. An illness, losing employment, losing your license, relationship breakdown, family violence and the list goes on!

In this episode, we chat about some of the common judgements and misconceptions when it comes to homelessness, why it's so important to advocate for these families and why you should never judge someone who has found themselves in this terrifying situation. Homelessness is far more than “rootlessness”. Homelessness means being without a safe, sustainable and private place to live. In Ballarat, over 60% of persons seeking housing assistance from specialist homelessness services did not get safe and secure housing in 2020-21.

As this episode goes live it is National Homelessness Week, every day this week here in Ballarat you can join “Walking for Homeless” around Lake Wendouree. If you are unable to attend and you would like to support this cause and the incredible work that the Salvation Army is doing in our community please see show notes for all links and information on how to donate to this worthy cause.
