You know that one that felt like it was a long time ago already?

spk_1:   1:28
Yeah. I don't know. I think everybody's under agreements. For some reason, this whole thing has made the world freeze right. It feels like it's been six months, and I guess I finally stopped counting. But technically wouldn't we would just be finishing Supercross, right? Yeah. So it is. It is weird, but jumping back for us, it was, ah, to be honest, it was an extremely frustrating season. We thought we were going in with one of the best set up sweetie we ever had. Hands down. You gotta know your own guys. But Blake has never been going as fast as he was heading into Super Cross. And I kind of got a separate there. You've got to writers so kind at that point where I like to talk about the two separate. So just on Blake's forefront, it was fourth of Anaheim, and that's usually his Achilles heel. Next weekend was gonna so so in there and then Anaheim to was the race tow us. That never happened. But if if you want a crash, we just feel like that was gonna be the Phoenix year before he was he was gonna win and it happened so fast for those who remember Don't TV didn't even catch it. But it was lap three. He just did what Blake does. He found his groove on lap three, closed, honestly, cause on video, almost 20 by clings on. Kenny went right by him in the second set of boobs. Can you made a nice back block past back And two turns later he caught a square edge that was left over from Dragon the start and just went down hard. And that was just one of those things that just each one of these top guys were at a point where one little thing gets in her head and it just seem to be like a bad luck. Bad luck. Bad luck finally got back on the podium at San Diego and just really that's the story of our season. He was never We weren't injured with anything this season. What speed wise, practice wise. Just by set up wise. Everything was there that we honestly kept thinking each weekend. All right, we need toe, not podium like we need to win. Can't pack in this thing. Tampa, which is, you know, home, home for us. So we're extremely excited again, going really fast that night and then right off the bat and the heat race. He was in that wicked, wicked crash, and he ended up we didn't know at the time. But just from the whiplash of the crash unit up, Blake will have migraines at his migraines, affect his vision, and it's hasn't happened much. It's happened a couple times over the years, and I can relate because I have the same type of migraines that's pretty much running back to the truck where women think everything was, get ready for the main event, could still got up unqualified, and then all of a sudden he just came down from the lounge in was freaking out by My visions on my vision is going, and that's just how it comes on. Within 15 minutes, he couldn't see at a left portion of like his whole left. Prefer was just done, and we we tried everything we could for the 45 minutes we had in the walk down until they May guys that we weren't lining up. It's the first time I ever had to do it like that. So jumping from there back to Bogo went into this season, I think Justin was filling the best he had ever felt on a motorcycle. Second year on a team was happy, A little bit of rough start, but Speed was there. And then, you know, he, like every knows, it has had pretty hard and he still still fighting that battle right now. So

spk_0:   4:39
that was Glendale. Wasn't.

spk_1:   4:41
Yeah, I was very skeptical was around round four, but he was. He was out for a solid minute and 1/2. It was again, one of those things people. It seemed to go quicker than it did. But when you go back and laps it on video, you know me when he was out for a good while. But it's kind of goes back with what I said a minute ago. It seems like it's been this really, really long time, but it's not that he had a drastic head injury. Anything at a good concussion and like we all know, the concussions take a couple months to heal. But in the big picture, it's only been 3.5 months for him. So again, he's not ready yet. But you don't mean I'm not trying to make it sound overbearing. It just all fits with the weird timeline.

spk_0:   5:21
Well, his replacement sure looked familiar.

spk_1:   5:24
Yep. And then you slide in that position. So and he had what? I think we're 4 to 50 races as a rookie. When he got set up with us that very first year, you earned your stripes outdoors and everyone knows he was with us for 34 years there. And, ah, this year was his first year, really doing it on a different team in a different experience. So it all felt full circle. He was back in the saddle. We were excited. He was excited, raises his first race, does gets his best result of the season and put ready to roll in. Monday morning comes and everything's cancelled, you know? So on readies on anything one.

spk_0:   6:01
You know, I saw Blakes crash of Anaheim and nothing gave me a migraine. He got slapped down so fast and so hard. There it was kind of, Ah, quick and ugly end toe his race there.

spk_1:   6:12
Yeah, it was, You know, it's one of those I'll say before I explain what happened. This was not the track workers fault at all. It was just one of those tracks that ups and what it was was you had across, you know, you cross across the starting line, then you had a split section, and Blake had been going to the outside every time. That was his line. On that quick little set up with Kenny, he switched to the inside. And when they, you know, your race line would built up, you know, build up like a burn that carried over into the the start straight away so they would drive. You just dragged the start straight away. So it left, like, you know, like an edge. And it was a pretty good lip, you know, a good 12 16 inch lip. It was lap three. When he made that move, he hadn't gone inside, but 20 bikes, three laps. You know, that's enough. People had run where it looked like there was a berm, but he didnt know is if you watch it, he goes in thinking he's headed in a rut, you know, like it was just the perfect rut. He has no idea. I mean, it. It folded it taco, the front wheel. That's like, that's how bad it was. And people in C I mean, talk about it. That's why he couldn't even finish. He finished her race. You tried, but he couldn't go anywhere.

spk_0:   7:21
We'll have you in the home team been doing during all the, you know, time off here.

spk_1:   7:26
I logged up my fourth back surgery here in the last four years, So

spk_0:   7:30
yeah, I thought you had some surgery, so maybe a little bit well timed.

spk_1:   7:36
Yeah, there's no, well timing on that part. I just honestly don't even want to get into it. It's has been a struggle that started with big surgery four years ago and then another and another this one. Hopefully it was with new doctors. Switch things up just at the end of the day. In my opinion, I ended up with the best of the best in this stuff that they figured out. It's kind of like we all gotta learn hard lessons in life. Sometimes I worked with good doctors before, but these guys, it was finally getting with the guys that I needed to be with, and there ended up being not a minor issue, a major issue that was wrapped up in my lower back, my lower lumbar to my steak room area that had to do with the very first surgery that was done four years ago. That was overlooked. So it it was the cause of all the problems I've been having over the last four years, which have been drastic. But then again, that's not the story I want to talk about right now. Very confusing. Nothing has matched up for what I've had to go through vertebrates, fracturing and getting levels fuse when I wasn't even doing anything. And now we finally found out why, minus a big infection I ended up with last week. Aside from that, the back surgery went great, and I feel even even mentally because it ended up having having to do with my spinal column my spinal fluid in my spinal column in the flow of that which affects your brain. So I mean, mentally I feel better, you know, pain wise. Yeah, I'm recovering from another three level fusion, but, oh yeah, mentally, it's It's refreshing at the same time. Like Burner keeps reminding me when were were at home resting. So about flying every week and all that. I mean, you know, there's never a good time, and I definitely don't want to say it's a good time right now, but yeah, I guess it was the time to get it done. It all worked out

spk_0:   9:24
well. I'm glad to hear that. Men with the season coming to a screeching halt as a team owner, what goes into it? You know, it's right now we that there's still a lot of unknowns, but, you know, do you just sit the guys on the sideline and tell him, Hey, we'll get back to you when it's time to go. Are you in constant communication? How how does it work

spk_1:   9:47
for us? The first thing I will say is, I mean, I'll tell the way we went about it, you know that there's like we all know this things crazy because the whole world and it's it's everything so endemic we'd never been through before and been through hurricanes, and you think you've done stuff, you know, that said I gotta first to say when it came Not not the beginning, you know, as this thing got, really, and weeks went on when it got ugly, like it did for a lot of people. I was I was scared to death with my own crew and team, because this is survival, you know, and every every person on the team. You know, I hate to go off naming, naming everybody. Every single person works for brother brother's. Amec's backed myself in the situation 100% and I say we've become closer as a team than we ever have. So somewhere along the line and we back up and talk about other things and patterns. But where I met now compared to the start and knowing the trust that I have in my guys, and more than that, feel the trust that they have in me when you always doubt yourself, it's I feel like this is going to make us better and stronger when we get on the other side. Yeah, so that's just I have to thank my crew for believing in me having my back, trusting me with all of our sponsors and where we're going, what we're doing with something that they ultimately no is not in my hands, but they know we're doing the best we can do. So thank you to all my guys straight up. You know, it's a tough one for us because we still got everything coming. We're going after the national championship. You know, Supercross, if you want to get back there and do as good as we can and win races. But we want that outdoor championship bad. So that's the crazy part is that thing. There's still so much good that can come out of this year. So you got to keep keep going and I'd say without naming names, we all know there's some buzz out there. I think there were some some writers that did some pretty you know, me, I'll hold back my my words from saying bad words, but things that just would have been harmful for the sport, for their own selfish reasons. And I'm very proud of my guys for riding through this at the same time. The confidences is un, really, you know, there, they're ready to go ready to race tomorrow. Already race in four weeks. Whatever it's gonna be so trying to maintain, that has probably been the hardest part. Because, of course, finances are way down. But again, that's where I went back to thinking the team, cause nobody's used it as an excuse. No one's taking a vacation here. You know, we're all first and foremost practicing, you know, all the safety that we all are doing. So you're trading responsible? Yeah, absolutely. So in that where your star crazy and we're at, I've Burt and I were talking about this the other night. What if this would happen 20 years ago in Moto? You know, 15 years ago, before off, everybody had their own private tracker facility. That would have been that would have been nuts, you know, Then these guys really couldn't be riding. So that's something that again you take for granted where we're at, but not everybody. But we both know. I mean, if you're a top guy, you got your own place or you're part of a place. And if you're a good privateer, you're you're tight with someone who's got their own place. So and that part, you're able to practice, you know, all the safety issues we got going on social distancing. Keep your numbers that while being able to get your job done privately. So whatever was back in the day, everybody would have had the right. It is two or three tracks and Southern California when they couldn't that would have been interesting.

spk_0:   13:26
It's funny because, you know, I've seen some fans say, Well, why are we even trying to go back to racing here for the last half of the season

spk_1:   13:34
and going through the roller coaster stages? I would go like this for me. It all started after Daytona. I was driving home from Daytona because it's local for me, obviously, and my mom jumped way off topic. My mom has been a flight attendant for Delta Airlines, and she just retired this past November at exactly 50 years. So she flew for 50 years and she been going through that. Her You know, the part. Sure, whatever retirement type set up a Delta, and it's kind of been ongoing. Deal. Farewell. She calls me to tell me, and my mom can talk. Man, she goes through this whole thing about show she's she's dumping her stuck, and she's getting getting at all this stuff because of the markets crashing and all these things were coming and happen. And I'm just like, What are you talking about in my head? You know, like I knew a little going on, but I had no idea. And literally she was She was, like, four days ahead of when it when it hits. So in the racing world, that's when it hit that between Daytona and Indy. All of a sudden, when there to make the announcement that we weren't racing in India was it was a shocker. But I still remember thinking it was a one week, Thank you know so just fast forward and go through the stages. I say first you had the This is gonna be quick and didn't really believe it and had to settle in. Then you had to really start counting it out. Then you start realizing how severe it was, and then that's when you again. I don't have a lot of sponsors, and then we have great sponsors. So rightfully everybody's being affected. Well, that came in different phases. You know, some of those had already started. Some of those started excel fast you know, And then other ones that you were counting on, You didn't think we're going to do anything that needed to do something. But again, it was done. Was done in the right way. But all that scary cause you don't know. So then to me, there was the Then there was the freak out. You know, the scary part. The payroll protection programs came in. Um, we still haven't gotten that, you know? So I've been on a business side. It it was right in the middle of trying to just that we had a schedule back surgery. I had been trying to fit it into the schedule and what I was going to do, They knew he needed to get it done before outdoors. And I definitely going to get into gross internal store. He's but something bad happened literally overnight and, ah, the next day, when he was he was scheduled. That fast, I was being told by the doctor we had to be in the They are by the next act, I think, was the evening my wife and I were trying to adjust everything on the fly and then, like you and I talked Before we jumped on this, she couldn't go into the hospital. So was dropped me off for the door in way to trust the surgeons and just go for it. You know, it's Nintendo. I'm waking up from surgery like that fast. Those five or six days in the hospital alone. You're doing everything from a phone, and after back surgery, you can't move without a nurse. So, uh, that part was just in the middle of it. So for me, of I had to get home from that. And when I got home, that was when the very first payroll protection program was released. So the first week home, I spent way too much time in my home office with my bookkeeper tryingto do everything we could. And at that time, I thought, This is cake. I thought we were in and ended up all that was the first wave when they cut out all the 10 99 subcontractors. So that was the first week of wasted time. So it was that for me there was doing with the surgery, doing with that, having to do it all for the crew and then the next month, rolling on and again, the severity started to kick in where the bigger deferments had to come in. And I was scared, you know, just some being dead on its I was I was just so scared to go to the guys, and then it started. I want to stay with Blake Guide to Go toe, Blake. No big secret. There is the highest paid guy on the team and love him like my brother and everything. But you just don't know in these times you want to, but telling you right away, man, I was I was scared. So what? I didn't being scared was have my wife drive me out to his place and talk to him in person. And it was Blake, you just blew me away. There was Don't even finish your sentence. You know, I I got this told till this date, and when I got to get to this state, I'm gonna go to work for my dad and keep and keep riding and out there. And when we when we go back racing, we're going back racing. You know, like Blake has that mentality that what do you What do you mean? You know, like What I'm trying to say is in his mind, he's like, Why do you think you're letting me down? I haven't won a championship yet. We got a lot of work to Dio, you know, it it set the tone. And it wasn't that none of the other guys weren't already in the same mode. That's just between burner and I, you know, kind of where it really started. And then, you know, management from there and just again at each each guys I went went through everything. Not that it brought a tear mine, but inside it did. You know, he just I just didn't think everybody was gonna be like that, you know? So and then, um just one thing I'll tap on real quick cause we could get into it later. But on that note, Justin was a tough one because Justin's done with this head injury. That's massive, you know, as far as when he's going to get back on and things just aren't getting over that hump for him. He's finding every every normal day life, but he just can't can't get past that home where he has been Incan cut with concussions in the past it have gone away by at that point, you know, So you're doing with all this and you're trying to in frame time. So once I talked to Justin, we had also go and make the decision that regardless of what was going to pay an out, where we're at is he definitely won't be starting. Let's just skip the Supercross part for right now, but we're not raising out. He's not gonna able to raise outdoors on the notation that by mid July could be, you know, mentally, July would be the next phase of him, even seen if he can get his leg over the motorcycle, which were just not willing to risk and trying to back him and help him give him the support. And he knows how he feels inside cause it's him. It's just he's got to get somewhere on a bicycle in his heart rate to, ah, a safe level, you know. So on that note, it pretty much he's out for for outdoors. But if he can get back here, you started feeling better than he would be back on the bike and start riding. So what? That said, Benny is officially in as Justin's replacement and on, Like you said, we're not set. But if we let's just say in our faces, if we can get racing Supercross like we're all hoping May 31st then he's in for Supergrass and then my knees immediately in full time for outdoors. And if, towards the end of the outdoor season or middle of the outdoor season, however, it pans out because obviously that's gonna be a longer later scheduled in normal. If Justin started feeling better and can get back on the bike, then it's Justin Spot. You know, if we end up not racing supercross until October and November, I'll tell you in September, because I yeah, I just don't have any idea. So back to the notation. It was just each guy was a different conversation. Tohave and everybody having each other's backs, I think, just gave everybody within the team comfort at the same time. Now, the last phases it started to for me at least, maybe it's been the time off. Maybe it's been, you know, from them to even. It depends on who your banks try to find balance, but there's three things I look at at this point, it was a reset button. Like we're going, it's all gonna turn around. I'm just full believer in and all that. This thing got blown way out of proportion. But it is what it is right now. It's given me time for the first time in honestly, probably four years. You know, since Blake first started winning and everything changed for us, I personally again had three back fusions, one next fusion and a complete labour done and my shoulder in the middle and had a nasty concussion. It's just been a blind four years, so I'm motivated in my mind is reminding me of the old me. It's got I got so many ideas going on, I had to start making if you saw my desk. There's just yellow. No pads everywhere. So on a note there, I'm just taking advantage of it now, like this is reminding me that this is what I want to do and you know it in a stage there. Two months ago, I'm freaking out over the firm instance and not knowing where things gonna go in business and everything, and now it's at a point once you know everybody is there for you to get back to racing Like I said. But when we do, everybody's all in. And who knows if there'll be some all guys and whatnot? I understand if certain people won't be ableto do what they can do and who knows what next year will look like or be like above. For me, my focus has never been so clear on what I want to dio and what we need to do to do it, you know? So that said it last night. I called Burner. Forget what time it is. Sounds tired. I'm like, were you doing? I'm getting in bed. Look at the clock. It's 11. 30. I'm like, Oh, crap. Like, you know, I'm not gonna tell you my crazy secret idea, but I'm like, Hey, I'm gonna blow it off the wall road quick. What do you think of this? Of course I could see his face, you know, right now I'm just rolling his eyes, probably looking at his way of ago. God, here he goes. And, ah, that's just where I'm at. I'm honestly ever get here in my voice right now. That's that's where I have turned to start that there's not stresses. Don't kid me and wrong, you know, But for myself, I just them excited. And I'm seeing the guys riding right now and they're writing God, They're going so fast, you know? That's why for us, it's twitchy. We we want to raise tomorrow. This we're just ready to go.

spk_0:   23:19
Yeah, well, I'm sure you and and the the rest. The teams have had communications with Supercross and outdoor Cruz. What are we looking like at the moment?

spk_1:   23:29
To go on the defense and to separate the two first? It's It's really reassuring and nice to see No, and have they came together for one, you know? Yeah, this could have so easily been the time that, you know, 11 kingdom tried to take over another, and they didn't. So I I just think I'm all for coming together for the better of the sport. That was really good. Yeah. Yeah, you know, that said, I think it's one of those things where it's nice to know outdoors has a saying when we're going to start when we're gonna raise him. We have a guarantee at this point, and, um, I can't go into great detail because it's other people's business, but it's kind of put out there. Will I think we'll be racing in July and it's gonna be a different schedule, but it'll it'll go with Supercross. You have to. I It's like when you were talking about the fans, if anybody could know. But it's the common sense. You just you can't tell the whole story. You can't get people's hopes up for things that are out of your control. The fell guys like Prader immunity and those guys. I mean, I don't think they've slept in a month or more, especially the last month since the, you know potential right at the end of the tunnel popped up. But you know, when the Phoenix thing was spinning and it was gonna happen, we were told from the very beginning, there's been me back up, just given insight. If you want one secret, I don't remember what our first phone call date was, and I honestly lost count. We've got to be up to around phone call conference called 12 13 14 Somewhere in there, from where there's roughly 2025 26 of us. For all the key team owners managers that felled came together and at us all on conference calls from the from the get go, you know, So nobody has been in the dark. We've all been there for for every potential step of the way. And when this portentous Phoenix thing happened, it was it was made very clear to everybody. You know, moves were being made, but there was a 15 day window. And if the state of Arizona had a spike, the whole thing yet shut down. And I think that's one thing where everybody you As the days clicked on, we all thought it was gonna happen. But that's where one thing that's left out, people might not know is every phone call. You know, we were talking every two days on these conference calls. During that, I think we made it about 12 days. And then, you know, the news came Government's office called Felled, and they had to go on a hit the reset button that in the big picture, though it was just the clock had to start over in recount and other new 14 days, 15 days. So nothing changed. Other than bumping up back again with outdoors, roughly going when it's gonna go. We still have that gap. It's for The Last Call had, obviously questions going. Other things going on in other states. Other possibilities, that's all you know. I know some things, but nothing's a concrete thing and definitely that my place to say, nor are they far enough along to get into it. But I I would say by the end of this week, I think there's gonna be news one way or another. And at the same time, you know, I look at it and best way to say is, What are our real plans? Our plans are hoping, hoping that Phoenix is gonna come through him erasing May 31st. So you know, the other thing is, and it's this part isn't isn't a secret, but I'll clear five for any of the fans out there who don't know. You know, even in the beginning, it was gonna be one place, one venue, and what's going on there is it's Do you want to get back racing or not? You know, for the sport of motorcycling to potentially have been the first sport back on television, period is incredible, and at this rate again. We only got bumped back two weeks to get back on their and be one of the lead for sporting events. Is is un really massive? Yeah. We're not gonna have fans in the stands, but television. It's just like I don't know what the actual record was. But, you know, the NFL draft was the largest NFL draft TV rating Wise times time, something Maybe you would know better than me, but I know it was at least times to It was it was insane.

spk_0:   27:40
People, people are hungry for entertainment and diversion, everything else. Right now, you only watch the headlines on the news so much before. It's like, give me anything else, you know?

spk_1:   27:50
Yeah. So what? There's two things here is why stay in one venue? Because if you knew what they were having to go through, you know what? The CDC Just every guideline, you know, the mandate. You know, they just for an example, you just start off thinking you're gonna have a, you know, a massive five page mandate and five days in your mandates. 25 pages long, you know. So there's a lot of things that have to happen. Well, if we can all be locked in toe one place in one facility, you just eliminated so much risk. You know, trying to go from a different state to a different state, just from a different airport to a different airport right now is so unknown. If you can lock in and get one, we need to take what we can get and give everybody the safest, best way to go about it, you know? So that's that's the reason. There it's gonna move fast. So I don't think fans, they're gonna move in. But again, the TV opportunities the sport always wants to try new things like we all know. But we've been racing on Saturday nights for the most part, sometimes in the day for so long now, well, this gives us an opportunity. And again, there's no set schedule. I can tell you the ones that were thrown on there, but they've changed all the time. At one point we were gonna dio it was gonna be sat. What was it was going Friday, Monday, Friday, Friday, Monday, Friday, Then it was like a and I might even be off because they spend so many again. But you know, there was like, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, You know, Sunday, Wednesday, the thing. The thing there is I'm loving that part because you're going to get to tap into something that we normally wouldn't get to Dio. And now we get to go sample, you know? And then when you're stacking races, what's everybody doing at home? You know, they're binge watching anything. Well, what if we actually have a week? There were within seven days you have three rounds of Supercross. People who have never seen it are gonna watch it. 23 days later, It's on again, you know? I mean, you could being an all just reality. You could You could double the viewership of the sport outside of the industry within a week, you know? So I'm going to kind of stop on that mark where my whole phase of where I'm at now with everything I'm just trying to look at the positives and the change. They can come from all this and stop dwelling on the negatives because we can't do anything about the negatives. Anything.

Yeah, So I guess we hurry up and wait and wait to see what happens here. But I appreciate the update here and glad to hear you're feeling better, too.

No, it's it's nice to talk to someone about it. That's why you, for those who want walking, that this came from me texting you the other night. You know what you doing, But but again, it's been like again, Felt is doing a good job. And writers we're talking and stuff, but for the team guys, there's Yeah, there's so much going on behind the scenes and my personal life isn't really enjoyable for anybody. Listen to. But one thing I'd love to say is people have been and I went to the writers is I'm not gonna throw one of the bus or what they said. But what if we can get Supercross in, you know, or would you rather just do outdoors and get Supercross in the fall? And and that's kind of where it wants to see the split season. We really want to finish the Supercross season, and that's the thing. Is fans no fans or not men? When that gay drops were racing, you know, like it's gonna be just as intense as it's ever been. All the TV stuff goes into play like it does. But again, once we once we get back, it's just you're back. And at the end of the year, you even get to sit back and sample. Look what happened with racing with a gap in there, you know

spk_0:   31:25
well, in some ways, I think it might even be a little more intense because before it was every week and then they have time to go back and cool off between rounds. If you condense it, that second or third race. If there's rivalries, it might get a little more heated than normal. I don't know. We'll see

no 100% like, you know, the bonuses were still there, so yeah, it's it's That's where I go back to again. It's like you know where so many people are already focused on 2021. But there's two championships to yet be decided one way or another were racing them, you know, we're gonna finish him, and one thing that's gonna be interesting is we were talking about how everything has been in slow motion. When we start racing, is it still going to go in slow motion or is all of a sudden time gonna blow by. I mean, that's that's that's that. That one's when you just said the intensity part. That's I feel it is gonna be like that's gonna be the play there. You know, guys, they can keep it calm are gonna be good guys that rush it, it's gonna be It's gonna swing things up, that's for sure.

Yeah, well, everything's moving countries moving. I'm a fan of our president, so I'm, uh I'm positive. I think I think everything started to go and and they're still be bumps in the road ahead. But I hope to see the whole racing family soon and again. Just get out there and get after it. Hopefully leave that manager towers smiling instead of punching the metal.
