54. Breathing & Bedwetting: What’s the Connection with Dr. Piya Gandhi
Jun 25, 2024 Season 3 Episode 54
Renata Nehme, RDH, BSDH, COM®, OMS™

Could persistent bedwetting be a clue that a child is struggling to breathe during sleep?

In this episode of the Beauty of Breathing Podcast, Renata Nehme speaks with board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Piya Gandhi about the possible relationship between disrupted breathing, poor-quality sleep, and nighttime bedwetting.

They explore:

✨ The difference between primary and secondary bedwetting
✨ How fragmented sleep may interfere with normal nighttime hormone regulation
✨ Signs of sleep-disordered breathing that parents can observe
✨ Why mouth breathing, restless sleep, grinding, drooling, and unusual sleep positions matter
✨ How tongue posture, oral restrictions, and jaw development may affect the airway
✨ When enlarged tonsils or adenoids may require further evaluation
✨ Why lip taping should only be considered after proper screening
✨ The importance of early intervention and multidisciplinary care

Dr. Gandhi explains that children do not choose to wet the bed, grind their teeth, or sleep with their mouths open. These symptoms deserve curiosity and compassion, particularly when they occur alongside snoring, heavy breathing, behavioral changes, daytime fatigue, or a return of bedwetting after a previously dry period.

The discussion also highlights why treatment should be individualized. Depending on the child, evaluation may involve a pediatric dentist, pediatrician, ENT, sleep specialist, orthodontist, or myofunctional therapist.

Dr. Piya Gandhi is a board-certified pediatric dentist specializing in pediatric airway health and oral dysfunction. She practices in Houston, Texas, at West U Pediatric Dentistry and Tanglewood Pediatric Dentistry.
