⁓ man. So many things. So many things. ⁓ Part of it was because I was so tired of being confused. I was so tired of being confused about what stuff makes an impact, like what actually might matter and what doesn't. And also, you know,

annoyed about greenwashing and like knowing that so much of it is probably greenwashing but not knowing what is greenwashing. have a cat trying to come up here. ⁓ she does. I'm covering it.

And it's funny because so much has changed since we started, but I came up with the idea because I had this other random podcast that I started on my own and I realized, Holy ssh, Nikes. I cannot keep up with the amount of work that it takes to do a podcast. even though was a lot of fun and

So then I came up with this idea.

and I didn't know what to name it yet. don't, I don't, maybe it did have a name. I can't remember at this point. ⁓ And then we got to know each other and we really wanted to start a podcast. And I was like, well, I kind of have a bunch of shit that I created for this one. And I looked at the Google drive and I was like, ⁓ I actually have more than I thought I did. Cause I had a couple of episodes laid out and yeah. ⁓

Yeah, crazy. So crazy. And then I was so grateful. was like, please, God, do it with me, because I can't do it by myself. And also, I don't really want to just sit here and talk to myself. It's not nearly as fun.

A lot of podcasts that I've listened to, if you go back to the very beginning, it's just one person talking and it's like, I don't want to listen to this. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, that was like the early days of podcasting when it was like,

this isn't a radio report. It's not journalism. It's different. It's a conversation. Yeah. Yeah. And we had worked together and we're trying to start a podcast at the company we worked at together. So I already had the equipment. So it was like, well, I got to do something with it. So, yeah. Yeah. But you'd already had, you had the experience, you knew what tools to use. Um, yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, I had definitely learned trial by fire.

And we had talked with ⁓ someone who had advised through the company that we were, yeah, we were so ready to do this podcast at this company and we just got shut down. And it was like, well, this is a much more fun topic anyway for us.

Oh yeah, we did. We got a bunch of advice. That's right. Yes. Yes.

Yeah, and I was really excited too because I originally framed it. was like, okay, because we had never really talked about sustainability stuff. And so I framed it to you and I was like, I don't know if you're into this or not, but if you're not, it could be like, I explain stuff to you and you try stuff for the first time or something. And you're like, no, I love it. I'm so into it. And I'm like, good. Okay. That's so much easier.

Right. Yeah.

Even better. Yeah. Yeah.

Well, but also you were already doing all these DIY things. Like I was doing like consumer sustainability stuff, you know, like trying to like you're saying like trying to buy products that are less harmful. But you were actually doing like DIY things that I had never considered, like making my own dishwashing detergent or something. Yeah, but you wanted to do it. You had research. OK, yeah. Well, and that's yeah, it's such a great impetus to do these things, you know.

Yeah.

Well, that actually started because of the podcast. I didn't do that before. True. That's true. Yeah. And see,

it's so funny because I think of you as somebody who like, uses, like doesn't really use paper towels. Like I just, I don't know. I just feel like you're so much better than me.

It's yeah, we had kind of,

I think we had kind of, well, okay, no, we both had this desire to be better citizens from a

carbon footprint perspective, right? Like what matters, what doesn't? Like, should I get an electric car? Should I, you know, is that, is that the moral imperative I need to have right now? Is it, you know, only shopping at thrift stores? Is it, yeah, not buying Walmart brand stuff, you know, for some, you know, something like what, what is the moral imperative there as, because we both agreed that like corporations are the problem, you know, not us personally, but.

Yeah.

What can we do that actually makes an impact that, you know, does make us feel better, but isn't just about making us feel better. So that we aren't diluting ourselves, you know, and, we've both been trying, you know, like I put a bucket under the shower when I warm it up to water my plants with things like, okay, it costs me less in water. it, know, not, not necessarily making an enormous impact, but it feels good, you know, and I can justify that. And it feels like something I do to save water. Okay. In a drought ridden state. Okay.

Mm-hmm. Yes.

This is great. ⁓ But yeah, is my organic cotton leggings, are they going to make a difference? Like what matters? And so I think we are both really interested in doing that research.

Yeah.

Yeah. And

that's true. guess I had been really interested in, because the first one was about cleaning stuff. Our first season was about cleaning products. So I was really interested in DIY cleaners, that kind of thing, and does it work? And I kind of knew I was never going to get around to it unless we had the podcast. Unless there was some reason. Yeah. Because it's kind of scary to change your habits. I don't know.

Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Yes, you had to an excuse to do it. Yeah.

right. Right into quit buying

a product that you've maybe your mother bought too, you know? And is this, you know, am I going to make like mustard gas by accident by mixing these ingredients, you know, things like that? Just again, because just because it's natural doesn't mean it's safe, you know, or affordable or, you know, all of those questions. And so, yeah, doing that kind of research was like a really good excuse to really start doing it.

Right.

Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. And for me, think, I really kind of opened my eyes with the whole GMO thing. Cause I remember just being so annoyed because I did all this research about GMOs and even grist, which was like super far left, super environmentally like eco warrior kind of spirit over there at grist. And I think in some ways,

Yeah.

They don't see the humanity in it and they're kind of like too far sometimes, but even they were like, they did this massive study on GMOs and their conclusion was, ugh. It's kind of like, ugh, that's not really what we should focus on, you know?

it's not the big... Yeah, it's kind of a look over here so you can't see all the things we're doing over here kind of thing.

Yeah, but then I would see,

I remember this truck, or was actually like a van that was decorated in this, either like a big giant ear of corn or something, but it was like an anti-GMO activist that would drive around DC, have music blasting, and they would be like, that was his life, was being anti-GMO. And there's a reason for that because, know, I don't know. It yeah, it was just like.

That was so interesting to me and I was like, what the fuck? This all is so crazy. Yeah.

Yeah, it changed like to change your perspective on that. ⁓

Well, so I was gonna, I kind of had this separated into kind of...

know why we started and then I was going to talk about our listeners. So maybe I'll do that and then we can come back to what we've learned more. I mean, we just started on it, but just I pulled some stats and things. So again, we started in March, 2023. Our most popular videos are okay. Episode 11 was DIY dishwasher detergent. That is our most watched video.

most listened to, most downloaded. on, on YouTube, it's 578 all time views, which is like, know like everybody's like less than a thousand is nothing, but it's, it's a lot for us. We get like, I think 95 is the closest. yeah. Yeah. On YouTube. we don't really market to YouTube and we're not, it's, it's there because I listened to podcasts on YouTube. So, you know, that's where we put it. But after that, it was a homemade laundry detergent.

which was also in season one. And then our April Fool's Day joke about cat poo dog treats. That was a popular one. It was only like a minute and a half long. So yeah, so those are on YouTube, but on Buzzsprout, which is where what we use to upload all of our podcasts to the various providers out there. ⁓ Homemade Laundry Turgeon also high downloads. And then our Thread Up episode where we talk about, we called it FFFF fashion.

Yeah, that was one of the bigger ones. that's so interesting.

I wonder,

so that's interesting because at first when you said that it was like the laundry detergent, I was like, maybe people like hearing about positive things that they can do every day and that like work and that, yeah, it's like worth trying because we've tried it. But then the DIY dishwasher detergent is the exact opposite. So, ⁓ big fail.

was our first, yes, it was the fail, right? So, and I don't know why

it gets, I don't know why it's been like the algorithm has pushed it or something on YouTube and it's gotten so many views or if it's just like... ⁓

Yeah, or just people

are kind of interested in it on their own and they're like, this, why doesn't this work? Like, huh, that's cool.

Yeah.

Yeah, I mean, because

one of the things we never do is we're not really like, we record these episodes weeks out, so we're not doing like topical news conversations. This is not we're not talking about like what's going on in the news or politics today. We do talk about overarching themes of those are like on an annual basis kind of thing, but not like this week because this week in news would be terrifying. I yeah, I don't know how we're both upright just even.

So we're never going to views from mentioning hot topics in the news. We're just not. And I like that about us too, I think.

it's kind of like more evergreen. Like we're not chasing the trend.

Yeah. Well, yeah. And that we're kind of a respite because you can, you can overdo it. You can go down the rabbit hole and just be, I think, you know, there's such a thin line today between being informed and being overrun. So everyone has to find that for themselves. And, ⁓ I know that this helps us also find something else to think about, you know.

So it feels kind of weird that I'm like, I'm like hoping my family isn't listening to this. Like, she's perfectly fine. But we actually already recorded this other episode and already had a lot of tears before we recorded it, having conversations. But, ⁓ actually one of my other favorite podcasts, they talk a lot about grief and they aren't talking about grief, but it's just sort of like an underlying theme because that's just what happened in their lives. So yeah. And so.

Anyway, I'm sure that will be a continuing theme because both of us now have lost our mothers in the last year. Right.

Yeah, I'm like a year and two months ahead of you in losing my mom.

And yeah. It's the shittiest club to join.

That's what I said. was like, feels like a club and I don't want to be a part of this club. Yeah. Cause it's sort of like you kind of pick out other people that you know and you're kind of like, yeah, my friend, one of my good friends husband's lost his mom too. I don't know. It's sort of like weird. You like pick out other people and you're like, I'm not alone or something.

And it's like you're kind of, yeah,

but you're not, you're kind of blind to it until it happens to you. It's a, it's, and like the difference between losing your mom versus your dad. mean, losing any parent, losing both parents, it's very different. And it's just you, it's like puberty. You can't understand it till you go through it. People can warn you all they want and tell you what it's like. And it's going to be different for everyone. There's some underlying themes that are the same, but it's going to be a different experience for you. And it's.

Yeah, I remember feeling very different after I had my first period. I was like walking around with a different posture, like awkward and like, how do I be? I am 11. I am woman. Crazy. No. Yeah. Yeah, it's weird. But yeah.

Joy still happens, you know, it's okay to laugh. I'm reminded of this Daniel Tiger book that I read to my daughter about losing a pet. And Daniel Tiger asked his dad, is it okay to still laugh even when I'm sad about Bluefish? Because he lost his fish. And his dad said, of course, or maybe it his mom. Anyway, they said, of course it's okay.

Can I, he said, can I still play with my sister and like have fun? Yes, of course, it's okay. So that's where I'm at.

It's like hard not to feel like you're gonna be judged for how you grieve too.

100%. I always think about like those, those true crime shows where they're like, well, we know the husband did it because look at his face when they tell them and everybody grieves differently.

I've actually I've been thinking about that. was like, I feel so bad for people who get instantly judged based on the reaction because you don't know what you're going to react like.

broke down into tears too hard. You didn't cry hard enough. didn't... Everyone will have a different opinion. Or like, you told a joke or you, you know, sang a song or you went, you know, skinny dipping with your friends or something, you know, like that's not how a grieving person acts, you know.

actually this book I'm reading talks about that and how she laughed at her husband's... she was laughing with the priest or whoever was running the funeral director maybe and as people were walking in and they looked horrified that she was laughing and she was like, dude just give me a break I don't know.

Am I supposed to rip my clothes and tear my hair out and cover myself in ashes all the time? I mean, sometimes you want to do that, but like, yeah.

So most of our listeners are Apple users. So we have more than half are on iPhones and most people download Apple podcasts. 36 % of our listeners download us to Apple podcasts and then Spotify, which is like 20%. So, then random other apps, random ones. and it...

I used to have

some of the random ones and they were just such garbage that I had to get rid of them.

Yeah,

Android or Google got rid of their podcast listening thing and they just use YouTube now. So when I download on YouTube, that doesn't show up on our stats, I think. So it might show up as an Android user, but anyway, 72 % of you listen from mobile devices or at least download from a mobile device, which tracks. That's how I listen to podcasts. Now, okay.

73 % of our listeners are from North America, followed by 19 % from Europe. Yeah. So we have like, and I don't know. Yeah, we should, but I don't know if one in five people are really in Europe or if you're all using VPNs and hiding your location, but I don't think so. Cause it was pretty spread out. Like, well, anyway, I'll get into these numbers. 68 % are from the U S and then we've got 11 % in Great Britain.

our biggest cities are, surprise, surprise, surprise Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then Austin, Texas, and then North Bergen, New Jersey, which is interesting. I have some friends. Yes. From, okay. And then Frankfurt, Almain, in Germany. So that's our fourth largest listing or downloading base is in Germany.

And then Portland, Oregon, and then Taylor, Texas, which I think are my former coworkers. So I was like, I probably know who 90 % of these people are who are down. I'm like, I know who lives in Dallas. I know who lives in, you know.

I don't know if it's because this doesn't say like

how many of the same listeners from Albuquerque. I don't know how many of them are retaining. Like, I don't know if if this is just my sister downloaded all the episodes and my dad has downloaded a few and then, you know, or if it's like when I downloaded episodes when I was in Albuquerque, you know, because I've been there a lot. So it doesn't tell me like it's, you know, like, for instance, we had a couple hundred downloads this weekend. ⁓

That's when we get the most downloads. think people are like prepping for the week, but it might be you'll notice that it'll be like the new episode got 30 downloads last week's episode got 15 and then the last 15 episodes each got one download each. And I'm like, somebody was downloading for their commute. So, you know, it's the thing with downloading is like, I don't know how many of you actually listen to it or like people who didn't download it, listen to it. So it's, it's kind of hard.

And that's when you get toasters and refrigerators and fans. And I mean, all of these things are useful, but you don't really need a toaster if you have an oven, you know, but they started creating a need for electricity and they're doing the same thing with AI is that these data centers take up all the space and all this energy and they've got to justify them somehow.

And then I had sort of a come to Jesus moment, if you will, where when you said the quote about

you cited a statistic that like 90 % of humanity will never fly on an airplane. And I've said this before, but like, I realized it is so privileged of me to be like, nothing matters.
