Speaker 3First time on this podcast and it's been since 2018. I've done any sort of podcast, so I'm excited to get back into it.
Speaker 1Jeez, okay. So what got you into this one? Why did you want to join Roy?
Speaker 3That was Roy's idea, actually. I'll let him run with that.
Speaker 2Yeah, I just thought maybe have a little bit different perspective on the stories that we have and and and just kind of what we did in our travels and things like that and our experiences and and I took it. I mean we went everywhere together this summer. So to not include her in that, like I need to include her in this too, you know so.
Speaker 1I'm glad I asked that question. Yeah, yeah, you guys are almost like rodeo. Uh, royalty man, you know, there's always, you know, the king and the queen right there.
Speaker 2So yeah, I mean the rodeo clown and the rodeo queen. There's a song about it somewhere.
Speaker 3Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's a song called rodeo queen by aaron watson, and roy had actually never heard it until our wedding day, yeah, and it's about a rodeo clown falling in love with the rodeo queen, which is kind of fitting here see, roy, man, we got to change that behavior.
Speaker 1man, that behavior, okay, just that. That negative thinking and self-talk man, I don't want to hear that, okay. So welcome, jesse. First time in a while, first time on this one, roy. Last time you were here on the podcast it was, well, I put it out November 20th 2022. Yeah, episode 112. I put it out November 20th 2022. Episode 112. Can you believe it's been going on that long?
Speaker 2It is wild. It felt like that was like yesterday and like so much has happened since then. Just a lot of cool things and oh man, it's been a ride, man, it's been so much fun.
Speaker 1Yeah, and I thank you for allowing me to be part of that journey. Man, you know be watching you on Instagram live when I can get to you. You know, there's no like seeing you live man.
Speaker 2Yeah, I checked out a few of your episodes this past week and it's like holy crap, this dude's got a lot going on. This is so cool yeah, so cool man. Yeah, you listen to the connor dean one I listen to connor and I listen to, uh, um, the gal, she had the, the middle name, the. That was really cool. Praise, bella, praise, praise. I thought that was neat. That was that was me. Her episodes.
Speaker 1Killing it man. She approached me and I was all like Okay, and found out where she went To school. I was like well, if I've Got the boys on, I'm gonna get the girls On. And so she did a pitch and I was Like alright, and then you know, wiley, shout out To Wiley always you know, you know, uh, we talk about him and uh made him blush. But yeah, that guy is a good guy man, he's very professional, so shout him out, um but, since, uh, what was it?
Speaker 1since I was, uh, put him on. You know, uh, I just had to, you know, put her on. And if they continue to come on, I'm still, I'll be TVCC's biggest fan whenever they allow me, so hopefully the coach comes on soon. Totally. Yeah, that's cool. So lots have gone on, lots have changed, and you've moved up. I'm going to say it. You've moved up and onward. Yeah, take a butt and take a naze dude. How does it feel?
Speaker 2It feels awesome, man. This is like it didn't really sink in until, kind of after season was over, because like when you're in the middle of it, you don't really realize, kind of, where you're at sometimes and how big it is. And then, like you get done after the year's over and it's like whoa, we just did all that. Like that is just like I was at the sisters, like I was at sisters rodeo working in, I was at, you know, working, high desert stampede, working can be these these awesome great rodeos, to be a part of. Gosh, it's been a dream come true, man. I mean totally, totally never and never thought I would make it this big. It's just it's, I don't have words for it. It's wild, I know, I know, and it's, it's big, it's just it's I don't have words for it.
Speaker 1Why is that, roy? I know, I know, and it's cool, it's good, it's okay. Why is it? Why is it shocking? I mean, you're quite the athlete. You're quite the bull fighter, you know your stuff.
Speaker 2I guess not so much shocking, but just more. I just feel more blessed than anything to be. I mean, there's, there's just a small percentage of the world that that rodeos in general and then a smaller percentage of that that get to go and do it at an elite level, um, and and to be around these guys and to be a part of, you know, some of the biggest rodeos in the Northwest, um, I just feel humbled and and totally blessed to be a part, just just to have a part in it. So, and that's my, that's my whole thing there.
Speaker 1What about you, Jesse?
Bullfighting, Rodeo, and Silversmithing
Speaker 3It's just been so fun. So Roy and I, the first time we ever chatted, we actually FaceTimed while he was at a rodeo. He was in his hotel room just hanging out and we chatted for probably an hour or so and that was when he was first coming back into bullfighting.
Speaker 2That was literally the first night I came back to fight bulls, so we we talked on FaceTime the first night, the first night I came back fighting bulls, so that was pretty cool.
Speaker 3Yeah, and then after that you know we met. Then COVID happened. Everything was shut down, which actually means for some really interesting dates for us. I know he's told you about this one practice pen. He would go down in Reno to and fight bulls for someone and just hang out and still just get back into it. And those were our dates.
Speaker 3I worked EMS at that time and so I would have a nice string of days off and then I would drive down to his house in Southern Oregon. I lived near Portland and so I'd drive down and we would drive six hours to Reno and then six hours back. So you really learn how to get to know someone when you're in a car with them for that long. So to go from that and then watch him go to CCT and just become I'm going to say it like one of their favorite bullfighters and then to go all the way to the professional level, it has just been so fun to see and it took some time to make that jump um for him but it was just kind of all in god's timing um 100. So to get him to, to see that and just keep going up and up and get to do it with him, I'm completely blessed.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, it's elite level man. You know that right, you understand that when there's professional in the name. Yeah, but still it's not some guy off the street, you know, on the corner saying, hey, let's go fight bulls, let's go do protection, you know, I mean there was some there was some work involved in this, to to get there and then there.
Speaker 2I mean, there were some times that I was very, very blessed to be where I was, like in the, in the right place at the right time, um, and you know. So, just just all kinds of stuff it was, it was just cool.
Speaker 3So I remember when we were first married, he we were kind of talking and he kind of thought you know, oh, I'm married now I'm probably not gonna rodeo as hard. And he thankfully told me that because I was like what are you talking about? I love rodeo.
Speaker 2You love rodeo.
Speaker 3Why are you going to stop here? Let's keep going up and up if you want to. I'm here for it.
Speaker 2That was cool, that was cool.
Speaker 1So PRCA and PBR and then CCT, always CCT, right, are you going to continue with CCT?
Speaker 2I'm doing a few more shows with the CCT. I actually got their finals, uh this last January and bought that. That was my fourth one, so that was cool to to go back to that, but more focusing on pro rodeos and trying to build it, build it up there, um uh, my goal uh for right now make columbia river circuit finals. That'd be a a good, attainable goal for now. And then, you know, as far as making nfr one day, that's still a few years down the line. It's just a time thing and you just got to put in the work and keep grinding and just see where God takes me with it.
Speaker 1And not only do you have the PRCA, pbr, but you're also Jesse's model man.
Speaker 3Yeah, he's so good at it, right Pretty.
Speaker 1Oh you're turning red, bro. Oh, I turn red. Yeah, You're, you know, husband and model. You're definitely a natural at it, but you model for our business, Rockin' J Designs.
Speaker 2Yeah, I do. I haven't got paid for that yet.
Speaker 3Totally willingly right, willingly, willingly.
Speaker 2We would do these shoots and it's like 30 degrees out and I'm in a t-shirt. It's like smile, look happy in a t-shirt. Like smile, look happy. All right, okay yeah, hurry up.
Speaker 3It was cold enough. His, your smile just got frozen.
Speaker 2It was fine yeah, it stayed right there.
Speaker 3Right, smile after that, oh yes, oh, I run rock and jay designs, which is a silversmithing and apparel company, and uh, it's funny, I actually learned silversmithing and apparel company and it's funny, I actually learned silversmithing from Roy's dad because he learned it from Roy when he went to college for it and he also rodeoed there as well. But yeah, so on the apparel, I don't make him model the jewelry, that seems a little mean, but he's really the male shirts mean, but he's really the male shirts. Yeah, modeling shirts and sweatshirts and hats, yeah hey, you're a good sport, roy.
Speaker 1yeah, yep, I, I had to put the model on there, man, I mean dude. No, that's great, add it to the resume. Yeah, so silversmithing, it's not easy, correct?
Speaker 3It's not very easy. No, I have a lot of calluses on my hands to prove that, but I absolutely love it. Why does one person get into it? I just actually asked Roy's dad once. It was actually New Year's Eve and we were at his house and he had a little silversmithing shop and I just said you know what? I'm just curious, what does it take to build a piece? So he went down with me to his silver shop. We picked out a stone and I built my first piece that day, and after that I was just kind of hooked.
Turquoise and Silversmithing
Speaker 3I was interested in leaving the job I had at the time with a Western fashion company, and so it was just kind of something to supplement there. And then I ended up leaving sooner than I planned, right after we bought our house Things just there. It was just the right time for me to leave and so I just jumped headfirst into it and people started buying things, thankfully, and it's just gone and gone from there. So I do that. And then I also do real estate as well. So it's nice to. I'm a very analytical person, I like numbers and um, so real estate satisfies that. And then silversmithing I get to, uh, take care of my creative side you're selling because you got a darn good model.
Speaker 3Exactly yes. Roy's like stop, Stop it's been this red in a while.
Speaker 1I love it, Roy. Hey, you wanted to have a podcast with the wife.
Speaker 2It was my idea. I know, I know, I know.
Speaker 1That's awesome. That was my idea, I know. I know. I know that's awesome. I do watch, you know, rockin' J Design on Instagram and I like the fact that you share some of your silversmithing, you know, with us with the videos and everything else, and it does not look easy at all, so I had to ask you know.
Speaker 3Right, yeah, it's dirty work and and warm requires a a couple different torches, so you got to be a little tough to do it.
Speaker 1be willing to get dirty okay, what's the easiest part of what you do?
Speaker 3oh my, my gosh Taking pictures after.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 3Um, honestly, I love shopping for stones. That's my favorite part, um, because I can. I'm not one to draw out pieces where it's interesting. When Roy Silversmith, he draws everything out, everything. I am not that way. I look at the stones and just can see it in my head how I want to do it, um, and what I want to make with them, and so that's my favorite part.
Speaker 2So I end up shopping for stones a lot very, very artistic in that way yeah finding and going to like stone shows and just finding stones and then have an idea already in your head and then creating it. It's pretty amazing really.
Speaker 1Average price of a stone.
Speaker 3Oh my gosh, it varies.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 3Because I mean, there's so many different stones out there. There's some really common ones that are easier to get yeah, like obsidian onyx really common ones that are easier to get. Obsidian onyx, things like that are super easy. And then there's really hard to get types of white buffalo. Well, white buffalo's all the same, it's just there's less of it. Now there's some turquoise that's really really hard to get a hold of, so it's pretty pricey. Um, yeah, it gets really interesting trying to average turquoise right now.
Speaker 3Oh my gosh, I'm pretty good at finding deals, um, but I would say $25 for like my cause, I'm good at like. I said $25 for like my cause, I'm good at, like I said, I'm good at finding deals. I would say $25 a stone, but then there's some that get way, way bigger and then there's some that are cheaper.
Speaker 2Yeah, it depends on the size, for sure.
Speaker 3I like big stones, so I'm looking at bigger ones, of course you do. I do.
Speaker 1What lady doesn't I mean you got to really question.
Speaker 3There are ladies out there that love the dainty jewelry. I'm not one of them.
Speaker 1Go big or go home, correct.
Speaker 3Uh-huh.
Speaker 1Yeah, what's the worst thing about the business? The?
Speaker 3worst part is definitely the grinding portion. So you've made your bezel. It's all all the pretty stuff around your bezel setting is done, it's soldered on. Now you got to shape it and that's the worst part, because, um, it's just really, really messy. I wear an N95 respirator, I wear safety goggles, I wear a canvas apron. She looks like she's in a lab, I look like I'm in a lab, but it's just if I don't do all of the things. Oh, and headphones, because it's so loud I started noticing I would have ringing in my ears if I was using my rotary tool and didn't have headphones on. So I wear all the things and when you're having to wear that for, you know, an hour, it gets pretty uncomfortable.
Speaker 1So yeah, okay, so that's, that's the worst part yep and yep, in my opinion for sure okay question why do ladies love turquoise? Why turquoise? It's pretty. It's pretty but it's expensive.
Speaker 3Yeah, well, you know, it's not as expensive as diamonds. Whoever said diamonds are a girl's best friend has not met turquoise turquoise.
Speaker 1So it depends on what you know if the lady's into the western uh lifestyle that's true.
Speaker 3That is true, although it is really fun when I because I do occasionally have booth set shows um, I'll do a couple rodeosos, I've done the cricket river races and there's people that you would not expect to buy jewelry, buying jewelry and it's really, really fun, cause, especially, they'll ask a lot of questions about the stones and the process and it's an opportunity to educate and that's what I that's my favorite part about doing the booth.
Speaker 1Okay, how many times a year do you have your booth?
Speaker 3I don't do it very often and there's a reason for that and it's actually because I'm extremely lucky. So, because Roy travels so much to rodeos, um, I have developed a reputation for bringing all the jewelry with me to rodeos. Um, I have developed a reputation for bringing all of the jewelry with me to rodeos. I have a fancy little box for it. I look like a Mary Kay lady with my little box of jewelry.
Speaker 2She just got this case and she just straight pimped this jewelry around. It's awesome.
Speaker 3Yeah, I wear it. And then people ask about it or people have heard that I carry it with me or have seen my website, seen Instagram and Facebook. Somehow they know about it. And then they come to the trailer and shop.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 3So I've done that. During we were at Eugene Pro Rodeoo, there was two timers that came by. They left to go get money and then came back with the clown's wife and they they all bought jewelry. And then I have, um actually sold pieces off of my body, which is so it's so cool.
Speaker 3I did that at um circuit finals. We were at the after party and a guy came up with his buddy and was like hey, my girlfriend really likes your necklace. Who made it? Um, you know where'd you get it? And he was like well, I actually made it. And um, I sell them. Yeah, I make them and sell them. This one's available. And he's like how much? So I always carry little boxes, cause I like to have the nice packaging and the polishing cloth and everything for people. And so he Venmo'd me, I packaged it up and he went on his way and surprised his girlfriend.
Speaker 1Saleswoman One heck of a saleswoman. Oh my gosh, is it difficult to get rid of the jewelry that you wear?
Speaker 3It can be. I definitely get attached to some pieces. There's only one piece, though, that I've actually made and will not sell. Well, I guess I should say two. One is the very first piece I made with Roy's dad, and then just one of the first pieces I made that I just really really loved how it came out and it was all by myself, so I was just really excited about it. So I've kept that one. But when I make some really big pieces that I know took a lot of time and effort and I was very proud of the design, it is a little harder to see those go. But when people love it, that helps.
Speaker 2It is a little harder to see those go, but when people love it that helps. Okay, there was one. There was one that she it was like that cactus set that she made and I was like, man, you should keep that one, that one's pretty unique. And she sold it. I was. I was actually kind of bummed out. She sold it, but that's part of it.
Speaker 1Model turquoise yeah.
Speaker 2No, I like. I like the jewelry too, because that's what I learned in school. So it's pretty neat and to see how far she's taken it. I used to do it and try to sell it and try to make it work, but she's taken it so much further and it's just very cool to watch.
Speaker 1She got the lady touch. Oh yeah, that's something we don't have yeah, yeah but turquoise. Why is it so difficult to resist?
Speaker 3I think it's the color. I don't know what it is, but it's something that you can just see from so far away. And you know, we're like bugs, we're just attracted to it.
Speaker 1That's a good way to put it. Yeah, Royce.
Speaker 3He knows it's true. That's why he laughs.
Speaker 2At least I don't have to buy it anymore, she just makes her own.
Speaker 1I'm pretty sure you're buying it, don't?
Speaker 3keep anything for myself anymore, but I wear. I wear it so much. I literally just, you know, get dressed and then go to my little Mary Kay box and decide what I want to wear that day.
Speaker 1So given any rodeo, especially the NFR, how decked out are you on your stones in a given day, especially a well, I, you know, I'm every piece of jewelry I'm wearing I've made at that point.
Speaker 3That's crazy. This this year was actually really hard, though, because I was in a leg brace, a ankle to thigh, knee brace, and so my outfits were not near as exciting for nfr. You know how the nfr can get ladies go all out for it all time of the day, and I fully intended on partaking in all of that. Didn't quite happen, but I always had all of the jewels on. So I actually had some good luck in the fact that I was so busy building other people's jewelry for NFR that I didn't get a lot of time to make something for myself like specific.
Speaker 3But my favorite piece that I wore I actually made the only way we call it is like a thigh necklace. So I had a. I had a dress with a slit on the thigh and then I had a I think it was nine stones altogether in a piece that moved with my leg that I could wear on my thigh to show through the slit, and then it could also be worn as a necklace. So that was definitely my favorite piece that I brought to NFR. Um, just cause that was all my own design, I was very, very proud of it.
Speaker 2Then you made a. You made a second piece too.
Speaker 3I did make a second one for um an NFR photographer that she wore.
Speaker 2She shot, she shot at the NFR. It was pretty cool, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3And so she actually wore it on stage during the um back number ceremony.
Speaker 1Okay, wow, big time.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1Rocking Jade Designs making it big time. Well, congrats. I'm proud of you and one of these days I was going to ask you what's the ultimate goal.
Speaker 3Oh my gosh, I honestly I've been so busy, taking it one day at a time, that I haven't made super big goals. Um, I know everyone wants a booth at the NFR, but I've been so lucky just at the fact that I can sell it off of me. The thing is that it's 10 days, so making one person making that much jewelry. Anyone who goes to NFR has multiple people making for them or they're buying, you know, wholesale to supplement. So if I want to do that, there's going to be some logistics like that that I need to figure out. But never say never.
Speaker 1Well, I know you made it, if you and if and when you make that booth. Okay, I'm like when, when, when you know if Rowdy Berry can be there all 10 days and do his thing? You know hustle and bustle in the rodeo scene as well. You can do that too.
Speaker 3We're there, we're at NFR almost almost the whole time already, just because I'm also a director for the high desert stampede, and so we both go to convention, roy and I. I go to the committee part and he goes to the bullfighter part, the contract personnel part. Okay, so we're still really busy during the day. Yeah, we're busy running around all over. Good way to be.
Speaker 1Yeah, still South points, your your base home base.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, yep, yep, will it always be pretty sure, unless they decide to change something. But I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon.
Speaker 1When, how far out do you uh purchase your uh hotel?
Behind the Scenes at a Rodeo
Speaker 3your room so we're really blessed in the fact that, since I'm with high desert, our block of rooms is taken care of. Through them, we've actually already secured our rooms for next year. They actually did it while we were in vegas. They, the front desk, got a hold of our treasurer and took care of it. Then which was awesome, I thought you were director of that, I did, yeah. Yeah, high desert's really interesting because I'm actually, by being a director, we are actually shareholders of the rodeo.
Speaker 1So because it's so new, yeah, okay, big time Look at you and fun rodeo wise too.
Speaker 3It's fun because I work during high desert stampede, I work the timed event gate, I run all of the production out of that side with our stock contractor, secretary red hat, hayley bridwell. So I'm actually headphoned up, mic'd up, um, so that I can talk directly to her, and our shoot boss on the other side so that we're coordinating everything behind the scenes. So it's fun that I get to be on the timed event and during the rodeo and then roy's working the rough stock end, okay.
Speaker 2So we don't hardly see each other during high desert stampede, like it's separate ends of the arena and we're just running like chicken with our heads cut off.
Speaker 1So it's great that's the one in redmond, correct?
Speaker 3yes, yeah, first weekend in april, it's so difficult to get tickets. It's so difficult to get tickets it is, yeah, yeah, especially friday and saturday, we've had sold out shows and then we actually sell standing room only tickets after the first 15 minutes have gone by into the show. That way everyone's seated and then it's. It's just the mezzanine level that we're selling, so we never thought we'd have to do that.
Speaker 1Even finals. You got to have a spot You'd be a sponsor, to get tickets to that too. It's crazy.
Speaker 3For the NFR. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1No, the finals.
Speaker 3Oh, circuit finals.
Speaker 1Circuit finals finals, circuit finals or CCT finals, cct, oh yeah, cct that one's packed CCT finals.
Speaker 3That's a really fun show.
Speaker 2Jason sells that really well yeah, with his VIP.
Speaker 1Yeah, alright, roy sells out really well yeah with his vip, yeah, yeah okay, all right, roy yes, sir man, man, oh man, it's tough to get from jesse to roy now because, man, I didn't know jesse was this big time man I've got a lot going on you guys, I don't how you guys do it. How do you guys have time? I mean, you guys spend a lot of time together, but wow.
Speaker 2Yeah, no, the summer was definitely a blur and it went by super fast just because of how busy we were. Yeah, but it was. It was fun as a ball.
Speaker 1So do you? Last time I talked to you man, you were questioning it. You know you were invited. Permit wise nfr. Have you embraced the life of elite athlete?
Speaker 2yeah, and I, I think I think you have to. Um, there's definitely um, you know. Know, you're still the new kid when you get to the pros. Like, this was considered my rookie year this year, so you know, I'm still learning things and learning how to, and I'm not just fighting bulls in the arena, I'm in the back pens running horses around, running stock and keeping the show running. So that's another element in and of itself.
Speaker 2Like you got to earn those guys's trust in the backpins and and um, I mean, like a lot of these bucking horses and bulls, like they're upwards to 50 hundred thousand dollar bulls and horses. So, yeah, you got to take care of them, make sure you don't hurt them, and then turn around and fight bulls for the pro guys that are going down the road and making half a million dollars a year, um, so it's, it's a. It's a different ball game for sure, but I mean, in the end, I mean treat it like, treat it like any other rodeo and um, you don't, so you don't, you know, overwhelm yourself, um, you know what's, what's your goal this year, man?
Speaker 2uh, definitely make the columbia river circuit. I think I a a legit shot this year. Um, like I said, last year was just learning the ropes and and figuring things out, so this year make a big run for that. Um, you know, I'm I'm working on my conditioning more and staying fit and watching how I eat and things like that, because I think that that goes. That goes a long ways.

Rodeo Stories and Bullfighting Experiences
Speaker 2Ronnie, yeah, I mean, that could happen. But like if I'm going to do that, I need to take care of myself now, and so I'm looking at the long game and try to get as much out of it as I can yeah, you've been.
Speaker 1You've been taking some hits though, man, yeah, I took a couple last.
Speaker 2Sorry it was. Yeah, it was two, two, it was. Well, it's jason finals two years ago. Uh, I actually got a bull around the length of me and got underneath my vest and broke a rib. Yeah, the dang thing. He ran the length of me and I get up and come out of the arena, took a couple deep breaths and like okay, nothing's bubbling, and go to try to put my vest back on and I was missing panels on my vest. There's like three different panels on my vest and I was missing a rib piece. Where'd it go? It's still out in the arena.
Speaker 2He shredded that thing. So a couple of the bull riders like give me some tape, let's tape this thing back on, let's go. And we fought six more bulls and I didn't feel it so much then. But that night I think I slept two hours and it sucked and then I had a performance the next day to go to. That was that was the. You decide if you want to do this or not. Yeah, so that was one that was not fun welcome to the big leagues, right, right yeah for sure, for sure.
Speaker 1Well, big time rodeo means big time people, man. Who's been the one that you watch when you have time? On any sport, though?
Speaker 2Oh, like events. Oh, event, or like rodeo events and things like that.
Speaker 2Yeah Gosh, who was it? I was watching TJ gray a lot this year because, uh, I actually lived with um with them for like a month in Derry, oregon, cause I rodeoed. I rodeoed with uh, his brother, levi college, rodeoed with him and TJ was always hanging out and everything and and, uh, it was really cool to see TJ do what he did, because the kid was always hurt. Even when he was younger he was always breaking an arm, breaking something, and he never really got a chance to showcase his talent and um him making the NFR number one. I mean making it, I mean, you know, he didn't have the greatest finals, but like we were so proud of that kid and just so stoked and it was super cool to see him there and to know him from such a young age like that and to see him there that was pretty surreal.
Speaker 1Okay, all right. What's the worst part of the rodeo for you? Worst part of the rodeo yeah, is it the waiting game when you're not doing stock?
Speaker 2I'm pretty I'm pretty busy the whole night, I guess after the rodeo, because we got to feed stock and you're up till 2 or 3 am like I'm ready to go to bed. I got hay and every, every place imaginable and like I'm ready to go to bed but I I can't say it's the worst because, honestly, it's something that I love to do and you just kind of, you just kind of embrace it you get one, you get with you know one within the uh, the bull and the stock and stuff like that yeah, yeah, no, you really.
Speaker 2You really get to know the animals when you're in the back pens and you learn a lot back there alright, man bullfighter.
Speaker 1How many different ones, and who was the one that you were like, wow, I'm bullfighting with?
Speaker 2it had to have been Eric Schwic schwent and logan blaisdell for sure, because that that was actually um. When I first thought about fighting bulls, I was watching those guys because they made it look, you know, so cool and so clean and the stuff that they did, and then to be to be able to fight with with those guys, um, that was. That was pretty cool to be along alongside those guys. Logan blaisdell got nominated for um, nominated to go the nfr. He was top five. Didn't make the nfr, but still he top five. That's. That's a. That's a very big achievement in pro rodeo. And then um eric made the eric made the nfr open that, that new uh, that new event.
Speaker 2So that's coming up. So both of those guys are are amazing, amazing to work with logan's a big dude. Right, he's very big, it's really it's really funny because like I work, so like there's matt acres, there's logan and eric, and they're all pushing six foot and I'm five, nine, and then I watch myself on the cowboy channel and I just look like a little midget running around out there like it's like it's.
Speaker 2So I mean, yeah, it's fine, but you know they're, they're big guys yeah, logan looks like a bull man. Dude, he's a stud man he took some, some hits, um that last year, well the year before he got hurt, you know, yeah, and I was so bummed out because I thought for sure that was this was going to be his year to make it, because if you get a nomination, well the year before, he got hurt, you know yeah, and I was so bummed out because I thought, for sure that was, this was going to be his year to make it, because if you get a nomination the next year, you're probably going to get it, you know, yeah, so him messing his knee up, yeah, it sucked okay, up and coming.
Speaker 1Cct rider man kid, no kid. Who's the one I tried to reach out to, that one that you told me to Still waiting.
Speaker 2Oh, are you? Yeah, so who's the one? Gosh, the one I'm watching right now. I like watching Wyatt Davis at the finals this year. He bucked off at two bulls that if he rode he would have won the finals for sure. He rode one the first night, gosh, they rode the crap out of some bulls. Um, he would have been in the high 90s on that first bull. He took him to like seven five hole, and then the one he had the day after that he took him about the sixth hole. But once, once, that kid, he'll get a little older, a little more mature. He's going to be unstoppable. I think he'll be the next one.

CCT Rodeo and Future Plans
Speaker 2Oh yeah. Those bulls buck him off His hand doesn't come out of the rope Like the longest hang up I've ever worked was his. The longest hang up I've ever worked was his. Was his, oh my gosh, yeah, his, his dad bought me a case of beer after that one.
Speaker 1I bet, yeah, he's a tough. He's a tough kid man. I remember when he got in that uh, you know he was in the hospital, man, but yeah that was scary back on. I didn't think he was gonna be back on it, man, but dude yeah yeah, miracles, oh totally. But yeah, he's a senior now, isn't he? I'm pretty sure yeah I think.
Speaker 2So I'm pretty sure I keep thinking he's older than he is because, uh, like I, I'll ask him. And he's like man, you're that young like geez, good dude, well, and even just being around him, he's just a mature kid.

So, um, and then I really also like watching justin houston. Just because he's also gone into the pros he still comes back to ccts, but he's always willing to help kids too. Yeah, um, from what I've seen, he's really willing to give back to the sport, and I respect that a lot too.

Speaker 3Yeah, yeah, he's really good at landing in the wrong spot. Really has to save him a lot, but.

Speaker 2Yeah, all right, all right. So what is the goal for 2025, for me or for both, I don't know. We we're just enjoying it right now. I got some pretty good pro rodeos coming up, um, and really just just building off of that, um, and just kind of see where it takes us. Like I said, um, columbia river circuit would be the goal, for sure, um, but yeah, just keep building on those rodeos and it's that's.
Speaker 1That's pretty much it there what's your first event this year?
Speaker 2uh gosh, I got, I got one for the cct in prineville. I'll do that one. Sisters, yeah, sisters would be in June, that's a for sure one. And then jump into Newport, right after that Eugene Canby and then Cashmere, colfax, washington, up around there Colfaxax huh yeah, yeah, well, have you been there?
Speaker 1it's, it's dinky it's small oh yeah, it's, it's fun.
Speaker 2I enjoyed, enjoyed going up there. It's, it's it's fun. It's a different, what northern washington's kind of a different world, I think it is.

Speaker 2Yeah. The beginning of August. So tiny, just the cutest little baby it was. It was cool. Walker, our, our, our dog was just totally like in love, in love with it.
Speaker 1They were sitting on the floor and it just had his head just staring at the thing yeah yeah, it was cool, oh oh yeah, not gonna say anything, not gonna say anything wow roy said that's fine. Wow, roy said that's fine, hmm, any any little ones bullfighters soon or no?

Speaker 3Oh my gosh. Well, I still always want to travel with him. So that's why I work the way that I work for myself, and so I'll keep silversmithing kind of the same pace I've already been doing. But I'm super excited actually about real estate, because I just went into business with my dad and so, um, it's I mean literally weeks old business Um, he's been doing it, uh, real estate, since 2006. So I can learn a lot from him and it's just I'm really excited to get to go into business together. So it's kind of of that's my main focus right now is building that business. So, um, but again I get to do it on the road. You know, really the only parts that I need to be in town for is showing houses and like going to inspections and things like that. So for the most part I'll get to travel.
Speaker 3Roy and I want to go back to what Roy said actually, because he listed, you know, the rodeos he had. Has he actually had all those last year and I think it's so cool? So he mentioned it, worded it perfectly the other day Every time you go to a rodeo like a new one, it's a job interview. You go to a rodeo like a new one, it's a job interview and the fact that all of these that he went to want him back is just like the greatest compliment. And it's really fun for me because I went with him to every single one and I've gotten to know people and made connections.
Speaker 3I'm really close with some of the committees um, canby's, my hometown rodeo, and I mean I know the High Desert crew, okay, I guess you know, okay. And then I love Newport. It's Newport, washington. Yeah, that's a great rodeo committee too. So but I just wanted to swing back around there because that's my just. I love traveling to rodeos, I love getting the trailer ready, I love making sure we're ready to roll as soon as he's off work and just getting to support him as much as I can. So that's I. I look forward to the rodeos just as much as he does.
Speaker 1So do you think the reason why he's coming back is because of you?
Speaker 3I guaranteed, yeah, we, we joke that I'm his manager.
Speaker 2I honestly couldn't do without her, Cause, like, like she said, like I'll come home from work and it's literally come straight home from work, shower and and and head to the rodeo, and she's got everything ready, Trailer's ready to go, and and uh it. It's a huge help to have her in my corner, for sure it's awesome.

But, um, they're thinking maybe, maybe the year after that. So okay, but yeah, james, james text me and he's like there's no pendleton this year, like now, and no, yeah, he was pretty bummed out. I really like to work with James because we just click well together and we really enjoy hanging out with each other.
Speaker 1Oh yeah, that reminds me the two names that come around that I've run into. You know the kids. You know just down-to-earth cowboys who just you know the kids. Well, you know just down to earth cowboys who just you know. I'd ask them like who influences you? You and hank. Uh, hankinson always comes up man oh, really that's cool.

It's kind of like done fajita style and and then, you know, they have really good house made guacamole and have all that on the side, and then they have awesome margaritas.

Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I'll tell you. I asked because I need to make a trip down there. Might end up going to Prineville since Pendleton's not going. But definitely haven't been drinking, man, I haven't been drinking man, I haven't been drinking you haven't? No, I my last beer, believe it or not. I had three beers when I first got there in vegas first day.
Speaker 1Second day three beers yeah I ended up getting sick the final day and I was just like no, but I think I just had. I had bubble gums and I think that's what got me ill.

Speaker 1But then when I got home had to start treatment, for you know cancer, and so I haven't. I've been afraid to do anything to inflame my system and. I stayed away from it. It feels pretty good. It feels pretty good I don't miss it.
Speaker 2But man and honestly, like me, I went like the whole month of july didn't drink at all and even going back further than that, I quit drinking for like six months. There for a while, that was like the best my body ever felt. Yeah, um, it's just, it's so amazing, like I mean in all reality, like it does poison your body, like you drink that much of it's gonna affect you. Um, but like, yeah, like, even when I, even when I have a by a beer or a margarita or whatever, usually it's one or two and and then it's usually not not much and my body thanks me for that, you know, yeah yeah, so I had to ask the place because you know I normally go to an initiative yeah love initiative.
Speaker 1The food is outstanding, but, man, I just don't want to have smell that beer and yeah so to that point, um carnival.
Speaker 3Actually, I remember seeing one of their facebook posts. They're doing dry january, so they're making all of their signature cocktails non-alcoholic, and I'm sure they'll keep doing that. And because they're they're so good though they're everything's like fresh squeezed and everything.
Speaker 1Okay, it's good since you're a real estate agent. How's the uh the market in the redmond?
Speaker 3um, it's so busy. Yeah, I mean, roy does excavation and he's always busy. So we're constantly building, constantly selling.
Speaker 1Is it becoming a metro area Part of Ben? You guys like going to be Tri-Cities yourself?
Speaker 3I think that would be quite a ways away. But you know I'm not going to try to predict the future there it could happen, it might not, I have no idea it's, it's growing rapidly.
Speaker 2It would take it would take a few years for it to join, but yeah, it's. It's the place to be right now redmond.

Speaker 1do you miss not fighting with him like you have been in the past?
Speaker 2oh yeah, I, I like working with that kid and I still, I mean I worked. Every event that I did go to cct, it was with him yeah, and I'm I'm really comfortable working with him.
Speaker 2Um, yeah, I think he's. He's the next kid coming up. I think that should go get his card, um, but I don't know, what's that, I don't know. I think I don't know. I think he's just don't know. I think he's just. I think he just enjoys where he's at right now and you know, there's nothing wrong with that at all. What? What makes you happy makes you happy, so just roll with it, man.

It's great too because there's like a lot of, you know, everybody wants to talk, wants to talk to those big guys and they don't they don't really want to talk to the college, the college athletes, and those college athletes they do have a story Like um, you know, I made, I made the, the college national finals, um, and anybody that goes there, um, that that's a, that that's a, that's a big rodeo to go to, um, yeah, you know, and to make that that's a big accomplishment and, you know, for some of those kids to make that that's pretty cool yeah, even the high school level, man washington is I know oregon's pretty good, but man, the washington kids, they take it up a notch man, maybe it's because I have a couple at the school and I I interview a few of them in and around washington and man, they, they're very competitive, man, and oh, totally yeah, they're friends, but man, they talk the most crap about each other.

He talked to me a bit and then he ignored me. Speaker 2I'll go pretty much anywhere they ask me to go, just kind of how it works. If somebody gets hurt and they need a guy and they call me, I'll go. So I'm not scared to go to Texas or go clear across the country.

Speaker 2Don't like like some people say, don't forget where you came from, Right oh totally, and if you have to, that's and that's the part like when you make it to these big shows like. So my first night at sisters, like, was a very humbling experience. Like it was a Saturday night I happened to get in because um eric schwint had gotten hurt saturday night and like that's the biggest, that's the biggest crowd, yeah. And then, like jb mooney was out that night, stetson wright was out that night, kai hamilton, I think, won it that night, and to just be there and be a part of that, it was just like, wow, why me God? That was pretty cool. So anytime I'm at those big rodeos like that, it's just awesome to be a part of it.
Speaker 1When they called you up and you hit the dirt and you're, you're working right. Yeah, how was your heart rate, man?
Speaker 2It was racing, for sure, but the but the time like leading up to it was was the most the the more drama. Dramatic, I guess I should say. So. The Wednesday night, um, I was just there pulling gates like they just hired me for that, and one of the bullfighters got. It was, uh, danny newman got ran over first bull out and he was out for the x bulls. Well, I already had my permit, so you know, legally I could have fought that deal and and Eric and Logan ended up finishing the X-Bowls and then we went through. Was it Thursday night? It was, yeah.
Speaker 3I thought it was Wednesday.
Speaker 2No, it was Friday night. Friday night on Fulham Gates and Eric no, eric hadn't gotten hurt yet um, I was, yeah, I was pulling gates and a bull rider got knocked out right in front of the bucking shoots and that bull went to the corner of the arena opposite of the outgate and I'm kind of standing over this guy and I know that bull's gonna come back and I'm just in my street clothes and here, sure enough, here comes this bull and I just it was just a little move to get him away, but somebody, somebody filmed it and got a really got a really sweet video of it. It's on my instagram. But uh, somebody filmed that. And then, um, I think it was the next night no, it was a day performance.
Speaker 2That saturday eric ended up pulling his hamstring really bad, and he was, he was fighting it off, and I mean that that guy's so tough, like he didn't. He didn't want to give a spot up and I don't blame him, like you never want to do that. And it wasn't up until an hour before the rodeo that I, that he's like okay, you're, you're in, roy, and that was pretty crazy in of itself right there, like, okay, let's go do this. And and then that that was pretty wild, just like an hour before the. The show is just your heart, just my heart was just racing the whole night you know.
Speaker 2And then now that I've gotten to know everybody there and everything they you know, they they want me back and actually filled in, for I filled in for logan last year because he messed his knee up, and then they want me back this year.
Speaker 3So, um, just just some great stories there yeah, I want to add to that story, uh, just a little bit. So they you know Brock had caught it on camera, filmed it and he's a professional videographer and Ben and sisters posted that video of Roy making that save and I don't think he even knew it, um, but people ended up seeing it. A lot of people that come to sisters go a second night, things like that. They want to come to Saturday night and the crowd when they announced roy was so loud it was the loudest I had ever heard that crowd until you know, a really great bull ride was made, um, but I don't, you probably didn't even notice that I didn't your ear was so loud, people knew it was you and I don't think you caught it, but it was really cool.
Speaker 3I was up in the plaza yeah filming and, uh, it was just wild the roar. I loved it, I didn't hear.
Speaker 2I didn't hear the announcer the whole night like it was just yeah, I was totally in the moment.
Speaker 1You're in the zone man yeah okay, you've been doing a lot of cardio.
Speaker 2Yeah, some, some cardio. I've been. I've been trying to run on the track a little bit more. Um, not like crazy miles or anything Like I don't I don't know how many miles like runners do a day or anything like that, but I don't know get one or two miles in, try to do that quite often. And then I got a the stationary bike over here. I'll, I'll, uh, I'll ride that and put on bullfighting highlights and and just do that too, and then, along with some other workouts that I do so well if I make it down to prineville.
Speaker 1Last time I I went there right the next day. I ended up trying to do smith rock. I did smith rock, but I spent the night in um in my truck and then, man, that was the coldest night ever. It was the coldest night ever, but that's why I said I tried to do smith rock. I did do Smith Rock, but, man, I just couldn't get warm. The weather's fine and I do go to Prineville. How about you do Misery Ridge or Misery Hill with me?
Speaker 2I feel like you might outrun me dude Distance-wise.

Speaker 2So game on, I'm not a long distancer by by any means. It's just pure to like, just to keep my keep it up enough, you know that's, that's a.
Speaker 1That's a huge training ground. Man, you can get some miles in you can definitely get your cardio. There man the world like elite runners, train there, you know, you got to get a few of them and bend. You know that's cool yeah.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Yeah, quite a few of them been. And every now and then when you go to Smithrock you see him, you're like oh man, this you know, you know he's. He's the big dog, you know, he's like tj yeah, you know, mooney, you know, and yeah, dude, it's crazy, it's crazy that's wild.
Speaker 1You know what else is crazy? The fact that this podcast has gotten a lot of the rodeo guys running. Really, yeah, that's good for them. Yeah, it's pretty cool, man. It's pretty cool because I don't know. Man, the western world is a lot more honest than the running world. I'm gonna tell you that. And the love that I I get from you guys, man it. There's nothing compared to it and the fact that I have the western guys saying, hey, you got me running, you know yeah and then the run.
Speaker 1The psalm runners say oh, you got me in, you know. First first rodeo I should have done this a long time ago, but yeah not not too many people, but a lot of the rodeo guys say hey, man, you got me running, I was in a funk, I I started running and thank you. You know it's pretty cool man.
Speaker 2So yeah, really good for you.
Speaker 1Yeah Well, it says the person that's not running.
Speaker 2Yeah, I don't run. I don't like to run. I honestly I don't like running. I just know it's good for me Right To get away from the bulls. Yeah.
Speaker 3And I want to.
Speaker 2I want to have a long career To get away from the bulls, yeah, and I want to have a long career. Yeah, and Jessie's there every step of the way, right? Yeah, she had to take a little break because she had hurt her knee, but she's back to running now.
Speaker 3I'm so happy to be, back. I like running Genuinely like running I've done a couple half marathons, nothing longer than that, but yeah, um, that's, yeah, one of my favorite ways to get outside that and riding my horse, so that's how I get outdoors.
Speaker 2I think our first date. We went on like a three mile walk or something 2.75.
Speaker 3Yeah, it was around a, there's a. He took me to breakfast for our first official date. He drove four hours to take me to breakfast. That was the first sign that I knew I should give this guy, um, a little bit of time and give a little bit of a chance, because he drove four hours for breakfast and then he walked around. There's a golf course in oregon city that has a track around it and it's got a little bit of everything in it. It's really fun. I I went and ran it all the time when I lived over there and, yeah, we went on a big walk and he kept coming back. So, yeah, I didn't scare him off love at first sight.
Speaker 1And now look at you guys, man, for four years, now four four years yeah it's.
Speaker 3Yeah, I'll be five in august.
Speaker 2Yeah, yep oh yeah, the last time I talked to you we're living in a fifth wheel and then we've bought a house. Since then, we've been in that for two years yeah, see, time flies, time flies.

Speaker 2I mean, if they're out there, if I'll help a kid get up, but there's not a whole lot I can really do. No, no, I chase them and then, if the, when the kid falls off, I pick them up and send them to their parents. That's about all I could do. Do you do that, though? Do you do that? That's, it's pretty. Speaker 2that's fun. It's fun when they, when they ride them clear across the arena. I'll hold them up over my head and the crowd goes crazy, right. It's pretty funny.
Speaker 1I was going to ask is that the best part? Is that the highlight of your day?
Speaker 2Oh yeah, I like to see well any of the young guys coming up, whether it's the Wyatts or any kid on the steers doing well. It's the Wyatts or any kid on the steers doing well. I really enjoy seeing the next generation coming up. And that kid that I told you about, he's an individual that I've actually coached for quite a few years and he's finally really hitting his stride and doing well, and that kid has the hardest work ethic I think I've known from anybody, um, and it's cool to see him doing some cool things all right, I think we had enough.

Speaker 1So I was like, hey, that was wonder, man, 20 minutes all I want is 20 minutes and you know, we, we, we, uh, I try to make a joke by purchasing something like a birthday, a birthday did I tell you about this, uh-uh nah, so a birthday flyer. You know you can pay him, like you know, to say happy birthday and whatever. But I didn't do that. I was like when are you going to be on my podcast? And dude changed it up and he made the joke on me.

Speaker 1It's pretty funny man. So I told him the joke, told him how it went, uh. So what he said was like uh, not yet, but you know, purchasing merch or gear will get you a little closer. I was like so when are you gonna give me 20 minutes, at least 20 minutes yeah man, just you know, email me, email me, you know, monday, tuesday at this and like all right yeah, okay I'll do that, but then you know my dad and all this stuff and so went up to him again.
Speaker 1Tracy's like there he is, there he is, go talk to him, you know yeah she doesn't have a clue, you know she just yeah, she likes rodeo, but she doesn't know like the big name. She you know.

Speaker 1And she's like, there he is. I was like, okay, it's like dell man talked to you last year. He's like yeah, I know you look familiar and so, yeah, you're all talking to me. I was like, you know, just confident and everything else.
Speaker 1And he's like yeah email me, we can do it. You know what? Oh nice, how about you go to my ranch? I'm like, oh, this is out of you know nowhere. And he's like I'll even hook you up with the Airbnb. I'm like, really, yeah, I'm all like dude for real. He really yeah, I'm all like dude for real. He's like, yeah, man, I'm only two hours of you know such and such place and you know, just get a hold of me, I could hook you up, all right, and we can do it on my place. I'm like, are you kidding me?
Speaker 1that would be cool definitely do it, but man yeah like I'm not nervous, but it's like holy crap, man for this guy just to say he's, he can. You know I can go to his place, use his setup yeah man, it's like really I would jump on that dude.

Definitely know what you're going through, roy, or what?
