Alright, welcome back to the Hunting Roots Podcast. I'm Brody Swiss. You're beside me, the prodigal son, my firstborn son. I think it's fair to call you the prodigal son. Yeah. You have returned.
SPEAKER_02That's right.
SPEAKER_03We need something there to be. I mean, the gamekeeper guys have hump hump the horns or whatever. We need something. We need something. Maybe a turkey gobble or something. Look at Rimbo throwing the horn, throwing the horn, the gobbler horn at him. What in the world? All right. Well, that's fair enough. We'll call it the gobbler horn because that's what we're doing today. Talking about opening day. Beside me here in the captain's chair, Rimbo, uh, letting him run things from the captain seat today. Rimbo, how you doing? Doing pretty good. Hey, we're all good. It's been a good couple days. It's been a great start to the Tennessee Turkey season uh a couple days ago. It was hot for I don't know, just a minute or two. Uh that day was good, and then Sunday evidently was pretty good, according to some landowners that I communicated with during church. But then the last two days have been a mess. We're gonna talk all about that. This podcast is brought to you by our good friends at Onex Hunt. Onexmaps.com is the website. Go and check it out, pull it up, go to your app store on your phone, pull up this on X Hunt app, and I mean, man, if you don't have it already, get it in your phone, using it all the time for turkey season. We love it. Also, a big thanks to the crew at Mossy Oak. Mossyoke.com is the website there as well. Go check out the content. They got lots of great articles there. Uh great place to go and find your camo, your goods, your gear. Check it out all over the place on mossyoke.com. And you can find, and that's where we talked about it a little bit last week, Aiden. We talked about the fact that that's where we need to go and get some more gloves. My desk gear. Just give just give everybody a real quick rundown of the desk. We've got the beverages today of choice are the uh Arnold Palmer for Aiden and I, Arnold Palmer Light, the old half and half iced tea lemonade, tall boys there, and then Rimbo, what do you got over there?
SPEAKER_00Dr. Pepper and cream soda.
unknownDr.
SPEAKER_03Pepper, cream soda. That I love Dr. Pepper. I'm a Dr. Pepper man, but I don't like cream soda. Is that good?
SPEAKER_00It's really good.
SPEAKER_03Better than just regular Dr. Pepper.
SPEAKER_00Probably.
SPEAKER_03May have to try that. Uh but in addition to the beverages, what I'm getting at, the point here, is the gloves. We talked about it a little bit last week. All the stack of gloves. Moss yoke gloves here, but if you'll notice, Aiden, what what what hand are these? They're all left-handed.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Could you use those? You're a left-handed glance.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I've got two different pairs of gloves I'm using right now.
SPEAKER_03So you've got a mismatch? I do. I don't think any of these are the match, so. Well, you can go through. There's literally one, two, three, four. And I know there's another. There's four or five of them right here. They're all left-handed. Mossyoke, there's there's uh Obsession, there's another Obsession, Bottom Land, the old school Infinity. Yeah, it's all I mean, they're and they're good gloves. I got the pair of underarm gloves. I love those, but I don't know what the match is to it. Um anyway, lots of stuff. You can go get you some fresh gloves. I'm fixing to have to go get some fresh gloves at mossyoke.com. And uh let's get into it. This is what is this, Rimbo? 238 episode.
SPEAKER_00I think so.
SPEAKER_03238 rolling through. Crazy to think that uh 238 episodes, and we've never missed a week. And uh that's pretty cool. Talking about being consistent in your life. That's the one thing we've been able to do is keep this podcast consistent each week. 238 weeks, and uh appreciate you guys listening and hanging out with us each week. Aiden, it is good to have you back, and uh I know your schedule between school and work and um everything else you get into um doesn't allow you to be on like you used to and uh just busy, busy days. But we're glad to have you back, and the fact you are back means again that success and good times have come your way. Opening day here in Tennessee. Um who wants to tell everybody if they hadn't seen it on social media what happened? We killed how many? Two birds. Double trouble on opening day. And you guys listening have heard us talk about before the LZ. We've been to our opening day spot is just that. It's a place we go and and we know it's gonna be, you know, it's gonna be that fly down spot. If they're not flying down in the field, they're gonna get there pretty quick. And uh last year we had a situation where the field was grown up, wheat was in it, tall, over your knees, waist high, not waist high, but pretty close. Between over your knees, thigh high, wheat field, and frosty and wet and just nasty. We knew as soon as we walked in this ain't gonna work and they're not gonna come to this field, uh, at least early. So the bus last year opened today, but this year changed everything. Uh birds were all around. How many birds y'all think we heard, honestly?
SPEAKER_02Ten. Yeah, I was gonna say eight to ten. Eight to ten, y'all think we heard that many? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I've told folks we heard eight, seven or eight, and I think I think it's pretty realistic. But yeah, I I there's no doubt. I've been saying eight, but yeah, probably ten birds all uh all in all. And you know, you think about it, a lot of those we were hearing, we were hearing doubles, we were hearing several. You know, I remember one part of the farm we thought we heard a bird. It turns out there were four long beards over there. Uh later found out, and I mean just it was good. It was good. And uh just an exciting day. What was the weather? Do y'all remember? I don't even remember what it's been. I know it's been windy, it's all get out since then, but what was the morning like on opening day?
SPEAKER_00I really didn't think it was that windy. It was pretty good, wasn't it? It was a pretty good day for turkey season.
SPEAKER_02Aiden, what was the temperature? It was a little overcast, I think high fifties, uh maybe low sixties, but enough for uh long sleeve and you're not sweating.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, it wasn't bad. Um yeah, I think it was supposed to be 58 degrees that morning. And somewhere there about you know, mid-upper fifties, and uh wasn't bad at all. Kind of felt good. Um but I I think just the the temperature being cooler and there'd no wind and it was just perfect conditions for birds, and like I said, when it started breaking day, we were we were hearing stuff, hearing birds all around us, and uh that was pretty cool. I know Remy said, Man, I've never heard this many turkeys uh ever. And um it did kind of take me back to some of those old times. I remember back in the day of the 90s and early 2000s, you would go on a spot that was hot, and you would just hear just you know, not on us, and these birds were talking about. We're not talking about ten birds right there around the place we're hunting, we're just talking about ten birds as far as you can hear birds, we're hearing turkeys, and and that's what I remember back in the day, you know, just hearing birds just as far as you could hear, you're hearing turkeys popping off, and it's just a cool time. And I guess I guess it must have been good for a lot of people because we were seeing a lot of folks popping up with turkey pictures. And who who all do we know that killed turkeys the other day?
SPEAKER_02Let's see. Moody Boys, John Paul, and Blair opening day.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, did Blair kill that with a he killed one on the youth hunt last week with his bow. I assume it was, because I saw a picture and he just there was no bow. Usually if you kill one with a bow, you're gonna have that picture of you with a bow in the hand just to kind of flex a little bit.
SPEAKER_00So he's tagged out in Tennessee.
SPEAKER_03Tagged out in two days, that's pretty good. And then John Paul killed one that same day.
SPEAKER_02Uh Austin Fusing got one. Oh yeah, little shout out to Austin.
SPEAKER_03I saw him at church the other day, and I never uh he never came up and told me torque turkey store. He had his sweet girl friend with him, I guess, and more important than telling turkey stories, I guess. But uh so he killed one, huh? Got one, yeah. On Saturday or s that was early Sunday morning.
SPEAKER_02That was late Saturday morning.
SPEAKER_03Austin, congrats to you. Um who else? I'm trying to think who else. Um I'm trying to think who else got on bird. Remy, any of the guys from your crew, and I think most of your guys killed one the weekend before, right? We talked about most everybody.
SPEAKER_00Um I think Aiden Warlpin killed I think he killed one actually on the youth hunt though. We didn't need not on opening day.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't think we gave him a shout out on the youth hunt. Maybe we did, maybe not. Aiden Warlpin got him one at the buzzer uh last weekend. So it's been good. Um several buddies, and I I'm not gonna say uh who all killed. I mean, we got several buddies that uh some of our friends that killed turkeys, and I I don't want to say everybody's name because some folks they don't post pictures, they don't want people knowing they're killing stuff because they hunt farms that they just don't want people knowing that they're doing any good, you know what I'm saying, or that they've even got turkeys on their place or whatever. So um anyway, shout out to all those folks that have found success quick, early, um, and dirty. But man, listen, let's talk about opening morning. First bird, y'all remember what time the first bird flew down? Uh not excuse me, not flew down, but first bird gobbled. You might remember we kind of were watching the clock. I can't remember if it was like six.
SPEAKER_02I know it was it was later. I felt like you know, they should have been gobbling earlier than they did. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um Yeah, we we talked about that some. The fact that I just remember it seemed like they used to gobble earlier. And I know it's different for every farm you go to, birds are fired up more than others or whatever, but I just I feel like it used to be back in the day, birds would be gobbling in the dark. I mean, maybe that's just different, maybe it's you know, as the season goes on, maybe the early season, you know, when we used to open up two weeks earlier, maybe they gobbled earlier in the early season, that earlier season. Uh maybe it's later in the year they gobble in the dark. But um, like you said, I just these last few years, I've kind of paid attention to it more. I feel like it is. I feel like it's like, oh my gosh, about the time you're thinking, man, there ain't nothing in here. There's no turkeys here today. Then, you know, at 6 15 or 6 20 when it's when it's, you know, the sun's even starting to peak, uh one finally pops off. It's not as early as it used to be. I mean it's it's kinda like now it feels like, man, there could be a turkey on the ground already. And then they finally start opening up gobbling. But oh I I think the first stuff we heard we thought was Jakes, right? Yeah. We had a bunch of Jakes. How many did that end up being? They popped out in the field later on. Do you remember seeing four or five?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Four or five of them. And that was pretty crazy because we were taking pictures and those birds finally, I guess, coming to our calls, they they were popping out in the field as we were taking photos with y'all's. But uh let's just talk about what we used, what we did. We had birds um again, the closest things I think we had to us, I believe, best I could tell, was Jakes. But we also said it's got to be a gobbler in there. And I did feel like there was a long beard over there deeper into the woods, past those young birds and those jakes that we were pretty sure were jakes. But then we had some birds right behind us. Y'all remember we could hear those birds pitch off the limb. You know, you could hear that um that wing slap the limb right behind us. But then they flew down the timber, I think went to those goblin jakes. But then when the birds out to our right started gobbling, and they weren't in a spot that normally birds fly down from, and they didn't fly down into the field, but they hit the ground, we could tell. I don't know if y'all notice the difference. I mean, you can tell the difference in a bird up on the limb, just and then when he gets down on the ground, it's just a more um everything's different. The flatter sound, uh, the acoustics are different, and just everything's different when he's on the ground. It's just more of a just a flatter gobble. And I thought, man, he he's on the ground, and not only is he on the ground, but he sounds like he's coming, and then he gobbled down one time, sounded like he was toward the end of that field. I thought, this is good. And then the next thing we know, they're coming up back around our right. They're kind of going clockwright clockwise around this field. And I just, like I said, I thought, dude, these guys are coming. And that's when it got exciting. When we knew we got birds coming, and there was two of them. Uh sounded like two of them anyway. And um you next thing we know, you know, it's getting hot. And I think what calls do we use? Y'all even remember what we did? I used a box call, or I knew I used my mouth call at one point because y'all were making fun of me.
SPEAKER_02I don't think you use your box call at all.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't think you did. Didn't I always use it? I had that tall timer Gabriel out. I I thought I used it earlier on. Yeah, I did because I flew down with it. You remember I did a fly down cackle.
SPEAKER_02Okay, maybe you did.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, actually I am remembering you didn't know, actually.
SPEAKER_03Because you remember I said, well, let's let them know we're here. And uh we did the old fly down. I think I did two fly down cackles. And uh did that twice. One of them, um, well, several birds I think gobbled at that. And that's when we're like, all right, they know we're here. Um they're cranked up pretty good. And then they were coming on, and then um, like I said, they got tore up too, you know, you could tell it was at least two birds gobbling separate there. Uh, and then they popped out, like, dude, they're out in the field. We we couldn't see over the rise in the field, but you could tell they were in the field. Because again, a bird sounds so much different from in the woods to in the field that gobble. And um, next thing we know, man, they're they're kind of cruising to our right, you know. I remember kind of going around and Aiden, you and I have had that happen before where was it your bird last year where they kind of went walked across the field and went past us? You remember that? Was that last year's bird? And then he kind of they went kind of past us and we're like, dang, they're leaving, and then all of a sudden they hooked around and came.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that would have been two years ago because I didn't kill one last year. That's right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but you know, you remember the one I'm talking about, like they pitched down out in the field, or and we got it on one of the videos. Um they pitched down in the field and they're walking up the field, and I think, oh, this is perfect. They're gonna see the decoys, it's all good. But then they kind of skirted, you know, a hundred yards out there past us and like they're leaving. And I remember they kind of went disappeared over the hill. I'm like, what in the world, man? What's going on? And um, and then all of a sudden, they popped back up over the hill. Here they come over the hill, and then from then it was game on. They came right down there. I think that was the year before last when you um I think it was open day the year before last when you killed that one, maybe. Um we'll have to go back and watch it. But these birds did the same thing. They were going up that little field, kind of the ridge line in the field, and I could tell they were gonna go. Like, I was like, man, they're going right. They're gonna get behind us and you know, circle behind us or go on up the field or whatever. And I just remember telling you, you guys were set up in front of me, Aiden, you were on my right, and and Remy, you were on my left, and I was just kind of sitting behind y'all in these bushes we were tucked into. And I I I told you guys, I was like, I'm gonna try to cast this call down the field to my left. And I remember me, I kind of turned towards you and just put my hand up to my cheek and tried to throw that sound where it sounded like the left, you know, kind of throwing it back to the left to bring them back around. And sure enough, man, whether that worked or they just figured out what was going on, I don't know. But all of a sudden they went from gobbing hard and moving pretty quick to the right, circling around us. And also, man, I look up over the field, here's a strutter, pops over the field, and there's two of them, and they're marching, man, up above us, marching, just cruising down that field. Fast walking, mean walking, and uh, dude, it was so cool. And I think you saw which one of y'all saw him first?
SPEAKER_00I think it was me.
SPEAKER_02Very so I was behind the brush, so I couldn't see much at all.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you were kind of tucked in there a little too tight as far as what was right in front of you. I mean, it was good cover, but yeah, Remy, could you say, what did you say?
SPEAKER_00You said something like two long beards. First two long beards, and then I might have said like one was strutting or something. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That was so cool. And um it was a good setup where we could see, and I just I just picked up my phone. I had the camera, video camera on, but I just uh for the sake of moving, I thought, man, we got three big dudes here in the bushes. I said, we did not need to blow this with them seeing us and me trying to move this camera around and whatever. So I just turned the camera on, pointed it. I had it pointed at them kind of out to the right, but then when they walked behind that thicker brush, I just pointed it straight out at the decoys and left it and just started using my video uh my camera, my phone camera. And uh that's for the most part what I videoed the hunt with. But they walked out in front of us and they got how far did you think they got from the decoy? Anybody?
SPEAKER_02What do y'all think from the five yards? They they got close and then they noticed something was up. Someone didn't set the decoys right. He will he will remain nameless. Will he? Yeah, remain nameless.
SPEAKER_00Aiden, he will run uh remain lame remain lame. Nameless, Aiden.
SPEAKER_02Either way, the j the decoy setup was jacked up from the start.
SPEAKER_03Well, but you didn't jack it up. The wind, and we said we didn't have any wind, but some uh yeah, something enough to turn the decoy around. We did the same thing we always do, usually in those field situations. We did the uh Avian X Jake, um, the Jake decoy. I don't know what you call that Jake decoy if he's a posturing or a core uh I don't know what you call it, like a quarter strut or um whatever. He's just kind of bowed up a little bit. And we've been using that the last several years. I think it's called the H is it the HDR Jake or something like that. Um the uh Amy X HDR Jake. And we've just been putting that behind uh a hen decoy, and we've used the feeder hen decoy, I love that one a lot. Uh but this is just upright hen, and and so that's what y'all did, y'all set them up, but the wind and you know how it is. If you get that stake, it just isn't just perfect up and down, a little bit of wind to blow it, and then the way it that sucker just spins, then it's facing kind of downhill. So they were facing, they're like butt to butt.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like the Jake was facing away from the hen.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like they were walking a sub separate directions away from each other. And I looked out there and saw that. I was like, crap. Wow, come on, what are y'all doing? Y'all got the this is ridiculous. Y'all got decoys looking like that.
SPEAKER_00Okay, y'all, I put the hen perfectly where it should have been, and then Aiden, it was just up to Aiden to put the Jake right where it should be, but then he got it too much.
SPEAKER_02Should have held me accountable, bro.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, you should.
SPEAKER_00I am.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you are now too late. Too late now. But to your point, they marched, I don't even think they got five yards. How far do you think they were? You think they were the I think ten yards. Yeah, I was I don't know. I just feel like they hung up. I was kind of surprised, and then maybe it was five yards. We'll go back and look at it, but I just thought they hung up a little too far, or it surprised me, you know, like I said, and I should say it surprised me because uh it didn't really surprise me because like I said, we knew the decoys were kind of janked and they were facing opposite directions and just didn't look the most realistic. So that didn't surprise me, but I mean when they got down there and they stopped, I'm like, oh dang, what are they doing? Because normally, what do they do?
SPEAKER_02I mean, they go up there flog that Jake decoy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they come up in there, they don't like the Jake. They come in there bumping him, spinning him, flogging him. That's historically what we've seen. That's why we like that setup, because he does not like that Jake with that hen. And um But they come in and they were just I just don't think they were the bad boys on the block either, because they strutted up there, one strut and one was looker. Um but they got up there five, ten yards, whatever, and then they just kind of like put on the brakes. And again, maybe it was just the fact that that decoy was all janked up, but they just stopped. And the strutter's kind of looking and he's spinning and he's turning. And then what happened? A crow popped off, and we got both those birds. How far do you think those birds were from us? 20 yards?
SPEAKER_01Probably. I'd say so.
SPEAKER_03Crow pops off at in the distance, and those suckers at 20 yards. Both of them just slung it. That was pretty cool. I mean, have you ever heard one gobble that close to you?
SPEAKER_00I don't think so, actually.
SPEAKER_03That was pretty pretty tight. Um but they gobble and we're just eating it up. Now, Remy, you had a good shot because you were on the left and you could see past the bush. Hey, and you had a big old bush right in front of you, thick, not something you'd want to shoot through, and so you're kind of hung up. And I kept seeing out of the him through the camera, I kept seeing you working that barrel over and trying to get it to the right, trying to get it to the right. You were you were posted up on the decoy and you kept trying to get it turned around, especially when they when they stood up, and at one point you see that looker, he puts his head up and then he pops his head and looks right at us. Yeah. You remember that? Yeah. I remember seeing.
SPEAKER_02He saw Remy over there on that side. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he saw Aiden just uh sitting there looking at him.
SPEAKER_03He looks over at Remy and like, oh crap. And um, he looked over at us and it was I remember thinking, that's what I thought when he looked at us. I thought, oh crap, we're busted. And we pretty much were because he looks over at us and all of a sudden it's like he stretched that neck up, and I'm like, I think I told you, I said, you boys better be shooting.
SPEAKER_02And when the strutter came out of strut and tucked his wing, yeah. You got that on video.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, the uh yeah, he comes out of strut, and then I think it was a looker. They may have both tucked their wings, but the the looker, uh whether you call it tuck their wing, check their wing, whatever, you'll notice, and if you've never noticed this, you need to pay attention to this. But when a bird comes out of strut uh or whether he's just chilling, and then all of a sudden you see him tuck his wing or check his wing, whatever you want to call it. I've I've we've said that.
SPEAKER_00Well, and then just kind of like flap it out and then put it back in.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you see him tuck his wing. Yeah, he tucks it back in, like, okay, I'm tucking my wing back in, loading back up. He's packing up is what he's doing. He's like, okay, saw something I didn't like, I'm packing my wings, and I'm I'm I'm getting out of here. You know, he wasn't spooked, but he knew something was up, and he did that. I saw that one point where all of a sudden you see his left wing or right, or whichever wing, just kind of went, boop, and he tucks it back into his side. And when that happened, then I knew because when he stood up and looked over in our direction, I that's when I was thinking, oh doo-doo. But when he tucked that wing, I thought, oh, it's done. We're done. They're not coming because you know, the first time I thought, well, you know, they'll sometimes they'll all of a sudden they'll turn like they're not sure, and then they'll think about it and they'll walk back up to the decoys or whatever. You can give them some time and just you know milk it or whatever you want to do. But when you tuck that wing, that's a sign that it he's he's checking out. And they did, and that's when I got in a I don't want to say panic mode, but pretty close to panic mode was uh I was like, You boys gotta make it happen. And I remember using. You what'd you say? You were like, I can't see through the bushes or something.
SPEAKER_02No, I couldn't get on them. There was just so much crap in the way, and I was getting nervous that it was not about to happen.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Just let them eat with the 12 gauge.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you had the twelve gauge because that's what we had extra bullets for.
SPEAKER_02Um I'm not talking about just like some thorns, like this is a whole bush right in front of me. I can only see bits and pieces of the turkey, so no, it wasn't stuff you want to shoot through.
SPEAKER_03It was, yeah, it was it was branches and and tree trunks and heavy duty stuff that you wouldn't want to try to shoot through, uh, nor could you see through it. And so um when they did that, I'm I'm thinking, you're you're stuck, you can't see, you're like, I can't see her, I can't shoot her, you know, what I can't even see them. And they're both starting to leave, then I'm I said, Remy, you know, I was just like, Remy, somebody, you know, because I knew you were on that side, and I was just like, okay, they're leaving. We gotta get one, you know, at least get one out of this deal. We we don't want to have both these birds walk away. So I was like, Remy, you know, somebody. And when as soon as I said your name, boom, you shot and dumped the one and just melted him right there at 20 yards, 25 yards, whatever. Uh and when you did, I know I noticed and again just looking through my phone camera, um, camera phone, I saw Aiden's barrel come up like he was just like, oh, you just kind of relaxed your barrel off your knee and just pulled your gun up. It's almost like he sat back in his chair, too. Yeah, and the gun just kind of came up and and you couldn't see. Yeah. You just thought the shot and that you just figured the bird had had taken off. And I look over to the right side of the bush and I see the bird standing there, and he's just standing there 25 yards, 30 yards, whatever, just watching his buddy flop. And I was like, Aiden, you I was like, shoot him, and you're like, I can't see him. And I said, stand up. I don't know what I said. I think I said stand up and stand up and shoot him. He's right there. So you stand up, and man, you went to shooting, because then you could see over that but or kind of get through the bush. You're still shooting through a bunch of crap, I think. And you shot and he took off. I'm sure you just you know, just panic mode on that first shot and uh shot again. You hit him on that second shot, you think.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I hit him on that second shot, and then just boogie in that on the second shot? That second shot, he was running, and then he stops, and then I just got it on him on that third one and got lucky.
SPEAKER_03No, you put it on him. Any lucky, you just that skill out there. But here's the thing, you're shooting that 12 gauge, and and I'm not trying to make excuses for you or excuses for TSS or anything, but man, a 12 gauge at close range, like you know, 20 yards, it's so easy to miss. Even that 20 gauge. I mean, it's so easy to miss. That 12 gauge coming out of there, it's like a golf ball, man. And if you're just not right on them, it's easy to miss them. And I'm I'm kind of like I love the TSS stuff, but I just it's almost like you don't want them at 20 yards. You want them out there because that's what you saw. The further he got, the better your shots got. You know what I'm saying? Like when he got out there, it I don't know, how far do you think he's 40 yards where you finally killed him? Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I mean, he got out there at 40 and you smelt you just smoked and melted him. And I mean, um, and so that's uh that's the thing. Like I said, I love TSS, but it's almost man, it's almost like you bet you gotta shoot him further. I almost sometimes I find myself just wanting to go back to old school shells and shoot them 20 yards and and not have that super tight stuff, or or just change up your choke pattern. You know, you shoot TSS and then you put this super tight choke and um it's a recipe for disaster if you get them in there too tight. But but you shot and when you shot him, I think you were just were you about to black out or what? Because you just sat back down. I don't I wasn't even sure.
SPEAKER_02I was just in relief, man. I was I couldn't believe that it happened like that. Remy got his and I've just been on so many times where when you shoot multiple times, it doesn't work out well. Yeah, yeah. So I was just in a sigh of relief.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Well, and then that that third shot too, because that third shot, and I don't think we had any more shells. No. Did you have any more? I didn't. Yeah. So I've been on plenty of those hunts where you sit there and you empty your gun. I've learned to carry five nowadays. Nowadays I carry five, maybe four, but always one extra. Because I've had a number of hunts like that where you pow. And then that third one, pow, and he's still going on the third one. Maybe he's moving a little slower, whatever, and you're sitting there screaming, like, oh crap, I'm literally out of bullets.
SPEAKER_00Maybe that's just the Lord telling you to just like you don't need to be shooting five shots.
SPEAKER_03Do better. He's like, that's the Lord saying, hey, quit shooting, go home and practice, uh, whatever. Yeah. Um, but I've had that. I'm standing with a shotgun in my hand, I don't have another shell in my gun, and he's flopping or he's running and flopping, and and you go down there and have to just chase him down. I've been on some of those, and uh I've been on some of those where I had to beat him with the gun, you know, and the gun's empty, and I go down there and smack him with the gun because I don't have any shells, and um all and the above, you know, or all of those and everything in between, uh, have been those situations. I've had those times where I've emptied the gun and just throw the gun down when I'm I'm running and I finally just throw the gun down because I don't I don't I'm this gun's of y no use to me now. Uh I gotta chase him down, kill him with a big stick, but um but I was proud of you. And I mean you you made that last shot and you just kind of melted back into your chair. And at one point, and people can watch the video, but uh I think it was after your second shot. I feel like it was after the second shot. In fact, we need to play this. We need to get this audio, this hunt. Uh we'll cue this up and uh and play this and just let people hear it. But at one point, do you have that shorter version, Aiden? Um or any version. See if you can pull that back up. Um at one point though, uh while you're pulling it up, I'll uh it might have to do it on mine though to connect to that.
SPEAKER_02Do you want uh just the shooting?
SPEAKER_03Just the shooting incident. Let's actually have the gobble too. Let me see if I can find that or um Yeah, I'll just do it on this because mine's probably already connected. Remy, is this connected to the roadcaster? Let me see here. Oh yeah. Let me just try to find it. I'll I'll cut to the chase here. We're gonna let y'all hear the audio. Uh because at one point Let me back it up here. Alright, so this is this is several minutes in. This is when the birds are finally getting right up in front of us. Uh the birds are still behind the bushes here. Again, I want y'all to watch it. We're gonna try to post it tonight, uh, the video of it on YouTube. But the birds are getting ready to clear the bushes here. You guys remember this, boys, you can see it. Um right behind the bushes, getting ready to clear the bushes for Aiden to be able to see them finally. Um But we'll play the little crow sound, let y'all just hear how this lasts a few minutes before before things. I mean, you might have to crank it up some bit. We'll let you hear the audio bite on this one here before things got ugly. Yeah, here they are popping out. So your barrel, gun barrel right there, at that point still pointed at the decoy, and you finally can get where you can see them. But they're so close you just can't move at this point, obviously. That old crow let them up. And just it's crazy how those turkeys do that. Just right on the money. You'd think it's just one gobble. From a distance, you sound like just one turkey. You don't know they're gobbling at the same exact time. And they're just right there strutting around. One strutter, one looker. There's where he just looked at us right there. He actually looks at us and looks at a decoy and then looks back at us. You hear me right here. I'm like, all right, we gotta do something. He just didn't drum though, he wasn't too tore up. I think this is where he tucks his wing right here. Tucked his wing right there. He heard us whispering and now they're walking steady. He's like, alright, we gotta go. Alright, here I'm gonna burn. I'm gonna back this up. Let me back this up because here I want you to hear when I say Remy's name.
unknownShoot out. Yeah, we can shoot him. Remy.
SPEAKER_03Hey, then shoot the burning. Shoot the burner, right? Number two.
unknownYes, sir.
SPEAKER_05Um at the$100 port of shells right there, son.
SPEAKER_03I like to shoot them three at a time. Give me some, dude. Oh my lord. Alright. Brings back some that's some sweet man. Take me right back to it, man. I'm like, oh, I got a sweaty right there. Um so yeah, after your second shot, I heard it right there. After the second shot, I'm like, yes or no? Like, you know, because you shot and I was like, Who you hesitated or whatever. You were trying to get that beat on him, catch him. But uh you said after the second shot, he he kind of started wobbling or something. You'd hit him that second shot and he just kind of staggered, staggered running or what.
SPEAKER_01I'd say so. I I know I hit him, but I don't You don't remember much of it, yeah. It was just a blur of craziness.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. But I remember yeah after that second shot, like yeah, yes or no? What we what are we doing? 'Cause I couldn't see. I was just looking, pointing the camera and looking through the brush. But um then after, like I said, your third shot, you just melted back in your chair. And I'm like, I thought I'm like, oh dang, he missed him, you know, because you were just kind of there was no celebrating or nothing. You just melted. I think you just were the the roller coaster of it and just the adrenaline dump. Uh you melted back in the chair, and you're just like, oh my gosh. And um I stand up and I see two birds. I thought, oh my gosh, we do have two birds. And so, because I was heartbroke for it. I thought, oh man, he got in there and and ripped on them three and missed or whatever. But yeah, man, y'all, you made up for it and um made it good. Doubled up on open day, nothing like it.
SPEAKER_00It's crazy.
SPEAKER_03And it's such a cool way to start because, you know, like we talked about last week, usually on the youth hunt, we love to have where Remy, you know, you kill a bird, so you're kind of out of the way. You know what I'm saying? We got you done. Not out of the way, but you you know, you rolling your eyes. What the heck?
SPEAKER_01Don't worry.
SPEAKER_03You're out of the way. No, um, no, you got a bird, you know, you got a tag punched, and and so now we're off and rolling. You got a bird killed. And this year on the youth hunt, we didn't. It just wasn't much, we didn't have much time and busy Easter Sunday. Um, and we just didn't we weren't in it. Um and so we go into opening day now, instead of me and Aiden going to do our double, it's you two, which is awesome. I thought this is cool. You've never done an open and day deal like that and never been to that place, and it was just a cool deal. And so, man, made up for some lost time, I guess. Uh opening day, you guys both double. And the beautiful thing about it is now I'm up to bat, right? And so that's a pretty cool deal. And uh so just a great hunt. And like I said, you guys listening, uh, be sure to go to YouTube, Hunting Roots YouTube channel, and watch it. We'll try to get it. We gotta get it up tonight. Which one of y'all gonna edit this thing?
SPEAKER_02Probably y'all two.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I've been done uh doing a little bit, so I think Aiden should work on it a little bit. You dropped it. What do you think about it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, when you say a little bit, yeah, I think the key words. I dropped the footage down a little bit.
SPEAKER_00You did, or did you though, or did I do it? I did. I think I remember doing that.
SPEAKER_03I thought I dropped them in the final cut, and I was like, you gotta you gotta pull these down to the timeline, and then and then you look you did it. They're already in the timeline. So you basically your little bit meant you just confirmed that I dropped them into the timeline. Is that what you're doing? I guess that's my little bit. We'll see. Oh, well, they were all scrambled in the timeline, so I had to redo. Regardless, we need to get that up. Let everybody see that on the YouTube channel. Uh it's just a short and sweet video, not a lot of stuff, not a lot of content, just a quick and quick and dirty piece. But uh it was a fun one, boys, and I I loved it. As always, I love going and seeing you guys do your thing and just making memories, man. That's the cool thing about it, is you know, for as long as we live, and and you know, when I get uh old, older, whatever you want to say, you know, we're gonna talk about that hunt. You know what I'm saying? We're gonna talk about that hunt. We're gonna laugh about the good times and cry about the bad times and all the stuff. And um, you know, it's good. And those are memories for life and uh sweet, sweet memories. So all good there. Hey, here's a word from the word today. This is Acts 4.12. Listen to it. You've heard it maybe before. It says, And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. You know what, guys? I mean, y'all y'all have heard it before. Y'all have seen people before that have uh maybe not, you know, people literally, but you've heard stories and throughout time, throughout history, there's been people that said, hey, I'm it, I'm God. There's been cultists that say, hey, I'm you know, cult leaders that like, hey, I'm the Messiah, I'm I'm I'm your salvation, and you just follow me. There's been people that have claimed to be God, there's been people that have claimed to be the Messiah. And uh and this verse is so clear. There's salvation nobody else. There's no uh other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. Jesus is it. Jesus is it. And it's kind of ironic when we have this verse pop up and it's on a week when Trump has pulled another crazy stunt and he posts a picture of him as Jesus. I think he's saying he was just saying it was a doctor, he was a doctor, not Jesus. But the world's in an uproar over this picture that Jesus, you know, of Trump in a Jesus robe laying a hand on somebody like he's healing him. And and I ain't getting into all the politics of it. It's it's stupid, it was stupid, it is stupid. Um Trump's Trump's done a lot of great things, he's done a lot of crazy things. This is one of the silly things that got put out there, and I think he's pulled it back down after everybody's like, dude, you you are not Jesus. Don't depict yourself as Jesus. That's blasphemous, blah, blah, blah, whatever. Uh, and I don't care if it's Trump, if it's if it's, you know, all the other religions out there where somebody said, I'm I'm I'm pretty much Jesus. I've got you. I'm your hope. I'm your healer. Um, it ain't happening in anybody else other than Jesus. Jesus is our only hope. I don't care who your who your daddy is, who your president is, uh, who your mayor is, who your teacher is, uh, who your world leader is, whatever. They can offer all the hope, all the promises, all the stuff they want to, but it's all about Jesus. Jesus is our only hope. Everybody else is gonna fail. Everybody else is gonna let you down. Even your family, your best friend, your spouse, your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your sugar booger, your boo, whoever, they're gonna let you down. I don't care if it's a Democrat or Republican, they're both goofballs. They're gonna let you down. Our hope is in Jesus. Your salvation is in nobody else other than Jesus. If you don't know him, you better figure it out, man. I'm telling you, you need Jesus. Jesus is where it's at. And so I want to encourage you with that today. Boys, it's been good having y'all. I'm looking forward to killing a turkey. I'm glad you guys got a tag punch because now you kind of slide on back. Papa Bear is up front and center. I'm going every day. Hey, and you got school tomorrow, right?
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_03Back to school and work. Rimbo, you might get to go with me. We'll talk, Mama, tell mama you got to do a late start for your school and I always do a late start. There we go. It's turkey season. Living on turkey time, you start school and work a little bit later, and uh it's all good. Guys, I want to encourage you to chase him with all your heart, soul, and strength. And we'll see you right back here on the next one. Shoot straight. God bless you sounded like a martian. You like, God bless. You sound like it's not even over yet. It's over.
