Many will be familiar with Tom and his legendary horse racing heritage. His family is racing royalty.

Tom's grandfather, Bill Waterhouse, was the biggest bookie in the world in the 60s and 70s. His father, Rob Waterhouse, is a bookmaker and part-owner of one of the world’s largest betting syndicates.

His grandfather, T.J Smith, is the most successful Australian racehorse trainer of all time. 

His mother, Gai, has won over 130 Group 1 races, is a Melbourne Cup winner, and has trained horses for the Queen.

Founded in August 2019, WaterhouseVC invests in businesses related to wagering and gaming.

In this short chat, Tom runs through the really interesting strategy that his VC Fund uses to produce extraordinary returns. And they have been extraordinary.

This is the first part of a wide-ranging chat they had about gambling and how Tom's fund invests, with a further episode after Easter.

Henry was certainly surprised about the philosophy behind the fund.

They even touch on his mother's appearance as a 'Time Lord' in a 1978 'Doctor Who' episode.

OPT is a biopharmaceutical company committed to improving vision in patients suffering from retinal eye diseases. They are developing a novel therapeutic to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME), which is soon heading for Phase III clinical trials.

Dr Megan Baldwin was appointed CEO and Managing Director at Opthea Limited (formerly Circadian Technologies) in February 2014, and has over 20 years' experience focusing on angiogenesis and therapeutic strategies for cancer and ophthalmic indications. It has just been announced that she is now moving to Chief Innovation Officer and Founder, as the board has appointed a new CEO and CFO with more experience in commercialisation. Looks like a smart move from OPT.

Prior to Opthea, she was employed at Genentech (now Roche), the world leader in the field of angiogenesis-based therapies for cancer and other diseases.

Her experience included several years as a researcher in the group of leading angiogenesis expert Napoleone Ferrara, before moving to Genentech’s commercial division, and having responsibility for corporate competitive intelligence activities. In these roles, Megan developed extensive commercial and scientific knowledge in the field of anti-angiogenic and oncology drug development.

Megan holds a PhD in Medicine from the University of Melbourne.

In this episode, Henry chats with Peter Harold, CEO of Poseidon Nickel (POS), following a disappointing recent update. Marcus has done a number of podcasts with Peter, and the company has been one of his key recommendations.

For those of us new to the story, Peter is a process engineer with over 30 years' corporate experience in the minerals industry, specialising in financing, marketing, business development and general corporate activities.

Until recently, he was the Managing Director of Panoramic Resources (PAN), a company he co-founded as a $3m IPO in 2001. Peter steered PAN through the financing and development of the Savannah Nickel Project in the East Kimberley, and the acquisition and re-start of the Lanfranchi Nickel Project near Kambalda, with the company reaching a market capitalisation of $1.2bn in 2007. He was more recently involved in bringing the Savannah Project out of care and maintenance, and back into production.

Peter has extensive experience in base metal mining project feasibility studies, financing, developments, operations and marketing.

Black Swan will be the focus of this update following the recent announcement on delays from power issues and metallurgy.
