You know what I'm just thinking ? It's so easy for us to create our own popes in our lives , and what I mean by that is that when we depend too heavily on our pastors online preachers , whatever case to read our Bibles for us , to study our Bibles for us and then tell us what it says , we're basically pulling our own well-being back to pre-William Tyndale , in other words , like he fought hard and ultimately lost his life so that you and I could sit down with God's Word and read it for ourselves . And I can't help but wonder how many people are satisfied letting someone else study God's Word for them .
Emeal ZwayneAs you all know , friends , I often highlight Oscar's abysmal failures in life , which all , by the way , traces our roots back to the fact that he daily consumes rotten motor oil in the form of something he calls black coffee . That's offensive , but , being the ever-merciful , gracious , tender , gentle , meek , lowly , humble and selfless friend that I am , today I'm going to highlight one of the very few victories in Oscar's life . Oscar , tell the people about the recent basketball triumph that you coached your team in .
Oscar NavarroThat's not even my victory . It was so fun Last Friday I get to coach my 12-year-old son's basketball and so much fun with those kids . And last Friday they were down by 12 points going into the last quarter and I just like I got them together and I'm like , hey , don't , because 12 points for 12-year-olds is a lot . I mean for six minutes left and I just said don't worry about the score , stop , because kids love to look up at the scoreboard and it distracts them . So I'm like , don't worry about the score , stop looking at it , just pretend like you've got a 0-0 game and it's six minutes long . Go win this quarter . And they went out there and got a really good run together and we ended up winning by one point .
Mark SpenceWait , this was the championship game .
Oscar NavarroNo , no , no , no . This is just a game like my kids in . You know what I mean , but they ended up winning by one point . It was like almost a buzzer beater . It was like four seconds left when we scored and went ahead . With four seconds left , one point victory .
Mark SpenceMy son , ethan , wants to know if you want to join him and his friends in a basketball game I told him . Yes , I'm in .
Oscar NavarroAs long as they'll take my old man game .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , Luke and Danny and Ethan . They all play .
Mark SpenceI just played last , oh yeah .
Emeal ZwayneRyan , are they going to form a team ? They want a team .
Oscar NavarroI just played . In my last night we played my league game . It was our first playoff game and we won by eight . So next week is the championship game .
Emeal ZwayneI'm in , let's do it . Oscar , you're still playing with a destroyed foot . What is your deal ? I ?
Oscar Navarrojust run in circles because I can't go straight .
Emeal ZwayneSeriously , Ray , did you ever play sports ?
Ray ComfortGrowing up ? Yeah , but I'm growing up Too soon .
Emeal ZwayneWhat did you play , Ray ?
Ray ComfortI played rugby , you played rugby . Yep never touched the ball once . I'm not kidding he was the water boy . I did some running . I hate running . I actually hate running . I used to hide in a hedge until the guys came around the second time . Did you really ? At school yeah , I'd hide in this big hedge . When they came around the second time I joined them and the teacher was really thrilled with it .
Emeal ZwayneWhy'd you hate it so badly , Ray ?
Ray ComfortBecause I couldn't breathe . That's all . This is small-minded detail
. Did you play sports growing up ?
Emeal ZwayneEasy . I played streetball , like basketball . I wanted to play soccer . That didn't work out . You know my parents didn't drive . When I was growing up we moved here from Lebanon . My dad was 70 , almost .
Oscar NavarroHis name is Abraham , my mom never .
Emeal ZwayneYou know . She was a homemaker . She never ended up driving . I was dependent on my siblings . I did karate and I only got as far as my white belt .
Mark SpenceIs that how you start off with a white belt ? Yeah , you start off , basically .
Emeal ZwayneI remember I got test days . Okay , I got your white belt , give me your 500 bucks or whatever it was . I tried to play soccer . I did theater for a little bit , A little bit of acting , because one of my teachers I was the 10 man in our sports play . I said sports , I'm talking activities , but streetball , yeah , I grew up playing basketball .
Ray ComfortI forgot , I played hockey and I played yachting .
Emeal ZwayneWhat is ?
Ray Comfortyachting , yeah , yachting , little yachts , peaclass yachts .
Oscar NavarroElectronic .
Ray ComfortNo , no , they're real yachts . Is it like the early ?
Emeal Zwayneage why ?
Ray ComfortAHS or whatever is yachts .
Emeal ZwayneRay , a yacht is a giant , enormous big . This is called Peaclass Were . They dingies they're really small dingies .
Ray ComfortYeah , those are fun . They go fast . Yeah , you got to bend down because the thing comes across .
Oscar NavarroYeah , I learned to sail on one of those . How to sail on it .
Ray ComfortYeah , how to sail on it . It's only three short times . I played a little hockey and then I got into surfing . Oh , you were a surfer .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , that's right , you didn't play hockey too . But wait , you didn't play ice hockey .
Ray ComfortNo , we'd no ice In New .
Emeal ZwayneZealand , we'd just played grass On the grass .
Ray ComfortYeah , it's fun .
Oscar NavarroI played hockey no it was hockey .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , so Mark your mystery to me , because you were like a massive jock , I mean , that was your life Really . Oh yeah , you were like I mean cross country .
Ray ComfortSo what are you talking about ?
Mark SpenceOh jock , no , not cross country or track .
Emeal ZwayneNo , no , I know you did football , but you also did track .
Ray ComfortExcuse me when you say massive jock , what are you talking about ? Because a jocky is a short guy that rides horses .
Mark SpenceSo that's most of the world . So what are you talking about ? This is the most confused .
Emeal ZwayneA jock is a guy that plays sports .
Ray ComfortYeah , that's an American . Most of the world doesn't know that . Okay , jock Got it .
Oscar NavarroWhat was the name of your horse .
Emeal ZwayneCan you imagine , seriously , can you imagine Mark as a jocky ?
Ray ComfortHis legs would be dragging as you went around the track , he'd walk like .
Emeal ZwayneThe horse would go like one mile an hour Anyway , mark . So yeah , I know , you did obviously football , that was your big thing , but you also did track .
Mark SpenceYes , football and track . Yeah , I wanted to play basketball but had a run in with the head coach of the varsity team with that and it ended that . But yeah , 14 years of football and then track was really a lot of fun you would have been a phenomenal basketball player .
Emeal ZwayneI remember back in the day when we were pastoring together .
Mark SpenceRemember we played a lot of memberships .
Emeal ZwayneI called you daddy long legs . He had to run across again and I was like mark , you never played basketball .
Oscar NavarroI couldn't believe it were you always tall or did you have like a ?
Mark Spencelate chris , I wasn't born tall , so mark you were , you were you were 6'3 , just for the listeners wait , are you really ? Well , I am getting shorter as I get older were you 6'3 mark nah at my peak . I was 6'3 I'm probably 6'2 right now . That's gravity , yeah , the high heels are without we've done that program here we
go again .
Emeal ZwayneOkay , but mark , the reason why I said you're a mystery to me is that your kids hardly played any organized sports . Right ?
Mark Spenceyeah , ethan did there's a little bit . Yeah , uh , noa played , yeah , ethan played basketball , that's right with with my boys , and he played baseball . Okay , baseball and basketball . So why , though , why didn't your kids really play a lot of sports ? I didn't push it on them , you know , my , my dad kind of vicariously lived through us with sports . Uh , I was just heavily addicted to sports . Yeah , I always had a sports page in my back pocket , you know , in high school and even the first couple years of college well , you wanted those statistic yeah , I just had to know everything , everything that every name of your bookie , yeah and uh .
Mark SpenceSo so I didn't , I didn't want to push that onto my kids . Yeah , I wanted my kids to kind of do what they wanted to do .
Ray ComfortSo how do we get on all that ? I just remembered I played cricket too . That was coed , though , right ? No , this is cricket , and um , I used to go out for a duck every time .
Emeal ZwayneYou know what a duck is no , ray cricket is the most foreign thing in the universe , yeah , so for americans , cricket is when you search for crickets and you eat them no , this is very much it's very much like like baseball , but a flat bat and you don't run around , you run right , it's not like baseball . They play for like three days .
Ray ComfortIt's more , it's more terrifying than baseball , because the ball is much harder , it's like a rock , and it is .
Emeal ZwayneHave you held a cricket ball ? It's crazy , yeah , it's crazy , and they don't use gloves to catch right , well , they do .
Ray ComfortThey do use gloves and they got masks and they do , but they have what's called slips and they stand around the batter and it's the most dangerous place to stand . And so there's one day cricket , which is very exciting .
Emeal ZwayneThere's three day cricket , which is very boring ah no , but ray , I thought the people out in the field , when they're catching the ball , they don't have gloves on .
Ray ComfortOh , they don't yeah , that's what I'm saying .
Emeal ZwayneNo , the guy behind the , behind the but don't people out in the field catch the ball with their bare ? Hands , yeah , yeah , that is human , that is a human hand rugby like football without helmet and pads , and then catching this .
Mark SpenceThis basically a pool ball , yeah with your bare hands well you know , ray has a hypothesis as well when it comes to rugby . With american football , we wear helmets and it gives us a false sense of security that we're okay , that we can run in , and I think he's 100 right , you know and we start bashing each other's heads in and then we get concussions . Well , with rugby , I see them do the exact same thing , but without helmets oh well , not to mention you've .
Ray ComfortYou've got a an instinct to protect your head always when you hit the ground in american football wearing helmets . You hit the ground , just bounce , and that's why you get the concussion . Yeah , but mark , do you bounce more oil ?
Emeal Zwaynemark , you're right , they do . They do it anyway .
Ray ComfortRight , the same thing , except the bonuses they get cauliflower ears oh , on top of that disgusting that oh yeah , anyway , sorry if you for those who flower ears , just type in cauliflower ears , rugby players also for all of our professional finders listening right now , we'll give you easy's address .
Emeal ZwayneThat's true , your ears fighters and wrestlers get the cauliflower ears too .
Ray ComfortNo , thank you I had four sets of people at huntington beach get interviewed . In each of them head cauliflower ears . I thought what does god try to say to me , he that has ears to heal and I'm here , why do the ears .
Emeal ZwayneDo that , why not ? And why is it this permanent ? Like you can get him drained , can you really but ?
Mark Spenceeven drained , yeah you didn't get a fluid .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , is that what it is fluid in there , wait , you're telling me every person with cauliflower ears can have them .
Oscar NavarroNon-collyflower well , no , because if you , I think , if you , you know what I don't know , I'm , I'm going on speaking you're making it up if you wait too long , you can't .
Ray ComfortBut I do know that some people have gotten their their ears drained so all of those that are listening with cauliflower ears , this is great news .
Emeal ZwayneFeel free to love you , we love you , our friends .
Ray ComfortAll right , here's a easy as a cauliflower face that's how you know we are unedited moments like that exactly .
Emeal ZwayneOkay , here's a comment from mason for life . I love this podcast . This podcast is second only to the bible and prayer for insight to overcoming temptation . I particularly love when they sometimes mention my generations , generation z , over use of earbuds , earbuds and refer to them as two sewage pipes going into our ears . I forgot this whole comments about ears . I , although I always laugh and wonder what they would think of me listening to every podcast through my earbuds . Thanks for the encouragement .
Oscar NavarroKeep it up thank you , mason for life .
Emeal ZwayneHopefully you don't have cauliflower ears as you listen to those podcasts . But what we think is , uh , it's wonderful , we're encouraged and uh , thank you for taking the time to write so you're saying we're coming up to about 200th program yeah , what can we do to celebrate that like a champagne against the wall ?
Emeal Zwaynewe should light something on fire , we should have a taco man in here while we're doing the podcast , can you imagine ? Yeah , so there you have it , friends , and the spot guys was the 10 command you just like give up halfway through by the third episode .
Ray ComfortHe just stops saying it's called a cauliflower tongue oh , this podcast is about you .
Emeal ZwayneBy the 10 commandments coin friends . Many of you don't know this , but we used to press pennies with our teeth . Well , with our teeth , oh boy , those were the days . Man , what did ?
Mark Spenceyou say with the eyes , or do with the eye teeth , what is that's ?
Ray Comfortright . I used to joke that we press the pennies with our teeth and did the eyes with their eye teeth yeah , those were the days , man . We used to get buckets and buckets or bags of pennies yeah and uh it had to be new pennies and we put them through this insane penny machine that would always break and when a break it gets white smoke that was poisonous . Would come out of it , daniel , alive or horrified , because we can't . Anything you touch mechanical doesn't get fixed so we got rick to do it .
Emeal ZwayneRick , he went sane , and then now the smoke poor guy . And now we have the 10 commandments coin . Friends , we didn't have to mess with all that , but it's a really cool silver coin . It's got the commandments on one side the .
Ray ComfortIt is metal . By the way , it's not plastic , it's metal yeah , it's metal .
Emeal Zwayne10 aluminum , aluminum I will say aluminum .
Oscar NavarroThis is one of my favorite things to be . You know , because people , because of the weight and texture , because it's metal , it feels like it has so much value . Kids love these things . Yeah , grab them , they cherish them , they , they put them on their bookshelves like they love holding on to them .
Ray ComfortAnd not only that I've never seen anyone rip one up yeah , so make sure to check that out , friends .
Emeal ZwayneSo it's got the gossips . Thank you , ma'am . So on side , the gospel on the other , and they're just great to give out . There's a nice little bag with a dollar sign on it yeah 50 in a bag yeah , and there's also a gold one that you can give away as a gift . It's not real gold , but it's gold that one yet . Huh , it's not real gold it's 80 a coin , yeah , so make sure to check it out , friends .
Ray ComfortAnd the living water is mug you can get the mug and fill it with coins the gold coin is a tremendous gift to give to relatives .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , really , yeah , it's really , it's nice yeah , I think it's about five dollars or so , so it's not too expensive , but you know it's good enough to see value .
Ray ComfortIt looks like real gold .
Emeal ZwayneIt's not yeah , so make sure to check that out . The living water is mug . Fill it with coins and over . Get the evidence . Study bible at living waters dot com that's a good jingle .
Mark SpenceDo it again , but make it sound nice living waters dot com .
Emeal ZwayneThat was pretty , you have to admit I like it that was so bad .
Emeal ZwayneAll right , friends , poor william tendell . Of all of all the episodes , we have to have this kind of introduction for one of the greatest grace men of god of all time . Yes , friends , we are today talking about bill tendail . Willy t yeah , willy t uh . Tendell guys , is
more of a giant . I think that most people realize I was listening to Steve Lawson's sermon about Tyndale and oh , it was so good . I highly recommend it . If you look it up on YouTube , I just put in .
Ray ComfortShould we say who he is for those who don't know Steve Lawson , he's not Tyndale yeah , that's where I was heading .
Emeal ZwayneGood , yeah , so Steve Lawson Just gives a lot of good insight I gleaned from some of it for this . But yeah , tyndale was , he's a old-timer back , born back in ? Yeah , but he hails from from the . Yeah , for he was born in the 1400s , 1494 , boy , I'm just botching this whole thing . He was from Western England , right there near the Wales border , came from a rich family of land owners , went to Oxford at age 12 who didn't ? Yeah , that was actually normal back then , right , yeah , it was kind of preparatory . They would go and they prepare them for the higher end college classes . But he was within the realm of the whole Oxford . What were you doing in 12 ? Oh , boy , good lump . Yeah , what's the good rest ? He was at Oxford for 10 years and then he went on to Cambridge and there are some they call him the father of the English Bible . Yeah , he was the first to translate the Bible in English from the original languages , greek and Hebrew . He did the whole New Testament , half of the old , and then died . We'll talk about that .
Ray ComfortWe do . What's that I hope we do ? I'm so horrified by what happened .
Emeal ZwayneOh , it's unbelievable ends up coming to Christ in 1519 , and this was about two years before Luther nailed the 95 thesis to that church store and went and burgh . Famously , he was basically born into the Reformation . You know , if you would , and a lot of it what came down to ? What was going on back then at what was called the White Horse Inn near Cambridge , where people would get together and have Bible studies and study Luther's works also a great podcast . Yeah , michael Horton . Yeah , that's right , and and so he ends up .
Emeal ZwayneNo , michael Horton and some other guys at Westminster have a podcast called what horse in , yeah , and so that ended up , you know , he went to the White Horse Inn Gathering and ended up , you know , coming the grips with the fact , wow , this is what scripture says .
Emeal ZwayneAnd he got you know , salvation by grace , through faith . And he ends up getting born again and ends up going back near where he grew up and became a tutor for a wealthy family , kind of like their chaplain sort of . And this priest comes over one day and they , they start having interactions , and the priest , one time , over dinner , as Tindall was coming , to realize , wow , the great majority of those that claimed it , no , god , right back then , that the Catholic Church , it was what , the , what was known as the church . And he realized , wow , these people , the majority of them , don't know God , they're not converted . And he realized it's because they don't have God's word . And so he got , he began to get this passion to get the word translated into English . It was illegal at that time to translate or to even own a translation of the Bible in English , and so so he's with this why is he ?
Emeal Zwaynepower . Well , yeah , the power of the Catholic Church . It was in Latin and they kind of they determined the Latin is his language of the Bible , even though obviously it wasn't . But they kind of made it that and most of the people didn't speak Latin , the common people . So there was power and control . If they don't know the word , then they , they can't criticize our unbiblical practices , which were for their own . You know , wicked means right ? So , yeah , so the priest Basically ends up saying , hey , we're , we're better off having the Pope's law than God's law . And this is where that famous quote came and then I'll open it up to you guys where Tindall said I defy the Pope and his laws . If God spares my life , I will cause a plow boy to know more of scripture than the Pope in Rome .
Emeal ZwayneWow yeah , and so , yeah , from there , tindall heaped up a whole lot of trouble on himself . He he went to his bishop , the bishop of London , thinking he'll support him in an English translation . Because of political reasons he said no .
Oscar NavarroAnd then Tindall knew he couldn't do it in England , so he hopped on a boat , flew to the European continent and Basically was there 12 years , yeah , and hiding you know , just thinking it's so easy for us to create our own Popes in our lives , and what I mean by that is that when we depend too heavily on our pastors Online preachers , whatever case to read our Bibles for us , to study our Bibles for us and then tell us what it says , we're basically pulling our own well-being back to pre-William Tindall , in other words , like he fought hard and ultimately lost his life so that you and I Could sit down with God's word and read it for ourselves . And I can't help but wonder how many people are satisfied letting someone else study God's word for them .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , that's heavy mark and a lot of times we don't think about the sacrifice that others made to bring God's word to us and to preserve truth for us . You know , we just think reformation . Our mind just goes into this general Sort of realm of all the reformers . They were great , but but man , they were paying with it for their blood many of them .
Mark SpenceIt's left us kind of scratching our heads like why couldn't he finish the Old Testament ? Why couldn't he do this ? Why do they have so much opposition from the Pope ? And we think we have to remember . You know , though , God uses people . He doesn't need people and you're done .
Mark SpenceWhen God says that you're done Right , I mean the apostle Paul . He wanted to reach the Jews and God says , no , I'm not going to have you reach the Jews , but it makes sense for Paul to reach the Jews . If anybody is Jewish , it would be Paul that is Jewish . He says , no , you're going to reach the Gentiles Right Within God's economy . It's so paradoxical , it makes no sense whatsoever . Somebody who seems to be so knowledgeable , so apt to be able to reach a people , and God says , no , I'm going to continue on with the next person . And we read the last chapter and we see that God wins . You know , I was in the British library and I was coming and I came across . There's only three of William Tyndale's New Testaments in existence that we know of , and one of them is there in the British library and I remember looking over at .
Ray ComfortBritish Library .
Mark SpenceAnd the British Museum is completely different . But the British Library I'm looking over at it and I'm just kind of like tripping out . You know , looking at this , a lot of these New Testaments were purchased within the Catholic Church and then they were burned . You know , when they gathered them and I remember , just looking over at it , you know it's so colorful , right , these old texts and stuff we had left there . You know , it's kind of a surreal moment because of all that had happened . We were trying to get some witnessing encounters and we cross the bridge over there at the Tame River Was it , the Tame River , the .
Mark SpenceTames , the Tames I'm trying to think of that . Is that what separates the London Eye ?
Mark SpenceI think , it's the Tames , yeah , and so we come over to the other side and we have the big film crew and we're going through this garden and I look back and my wife disappeared and one of the cameraman goes you lost , laura . And I go baby , you got to keep up with us . I go , I don't want you to get lost . And I go over to her and she's just staring at the statue of William Tyndale that they have there in London . Wow , and just in awe of looking at it and the words , the inscription that is on there of amongst many other things amongst scriptures , where Lord opened the King of England's eyes , which is reported to be his last words that he had , that's right . And just a couple years after that , then the Bible became accessible and all the perishes correct .
Mark SpenceYeah , and so , like my wife caught it right away and we walked right by it . You know the monument that was erected in his honor because of the work that he did for the English Bible Wow A
huge .
Emeal ZwayneYeah . And , ray Mark , I'm so glad you made that point , because I was thinking the same thing as I was , you know , reexamining Tyndale's life , and that is he didn't finish the Old Testament , but he did .
Mark SpenceRight . He finished the work which God set before Exactly .
Emeal ZwayneAnd yet , Ray , logically speaking , we would look at that and thank God , this man , he never got married , Tyndale . He basically spent 12 years in hiding with the single passion of getting God's word into the common language of the people . And England was unique in that regard because almost every European country had the Bible in its common language except for England . But , Ray , we would look at that and think logically God , why did you take him out before he could finish that work he was so passionate about ? But God works in ways we can't comprehend .
Ray ComfortSame thing happened to Matthew Henry . He didn't finish Matthew Henry's commentary , he died before he could . Yeah , God's ways aren't our ways and we can't figure it , but I just got to share that . I was delighted as I researched William Tyndale to see how evangelistic he was . I didn't realize it . You kind of think theologian Bible translator . He's just in a little room by himself with a pen .
Emeal ZwayneNo way .
Ray ComfortRight , but , like some of us quotes , the law and the gospel are two keys . The law is the key that shuts up all men under condemnation and the gospel is the key which opens the door and lets them out .
Mark SpenceThat shows me as ah , it's not just you know the God's law , blah , blah blah .
Ray ComfortAnd so that delighted me to know this and that it also made me grieve even more with such a horrible death . What was his crime ? We're going to look at that in a few minutes . I get Right . What was his ?
Emeal Zwaynecrime . Yeah , exactly , and his impact is so massive and Ray , you nailed it right Again it was because he looked and saw hey , most of the people here in England aren't even converted . Well , how do you convert people without the word of God ? They're left in darkness , you know , he said . This is a quote from him . He said I perceived how that it was impossible to establish the lay people in any truth , except the scripture were plainly laid before their eyes and their mother tongue . I mean that's , and we just take it for granted . I mean we have how many Bibles we have on our shelves ? And and , and really it traces its roots backs . What happened was King Henry ended up realizing because the eighth yeah , henry , the eighth , right , you know , and he was , you know , he started to realize because he had one . He , at one point he thought , okay , tyndale's having an impact , let me bring him into my court and let him kind of work with me . Tyndale laid some conditions . William didn't accept it , and so then he wouldn't let him back .
Ray ComfortAnd then Tyndale didn't want to come back , you said William didn't accept it , henry didn't accept it .
Emeal ZwayneWell , yeah , Henry wouldn't accept the conditions .
Ray ComfortOh , okay .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , and so he ends up staying . But then they ended after he finished the translation , at least the New Testament . They smuggled about 18 to 20,000 into England and even after Tyndale died the King started to see his influence . It was like this is huge . And then he , he commissioned a translation and and all that . But Lawson called him the leading light of the English reformation . He really sparked it . You know , for England Martin Lloyd Jones called him the first Puritan , and then you extrapolate that right , because it was , it was through the word of God getting in England that the Puritans rose up . From the Puritans came the Pilgrims . The Pilgrims end up seeking religious freedom and come to America . So our roots , even in this country , in a sense trace themselves back to Tyndale .
Ray ComfortSo was the printing press invented just before that , or ?
Emeal ZwayneThe printer press was invented yeah , just just after , and that's where you know it became more possible to disseminate and print . I mean I mean it was . Yeah , it was , at first there were hand copies , and then the and then the printing press came in and that's where it started to spread , you know , with Luther and his works and Tyndale . But yeah , I mean it was , it was phenomenal what God ended up doing .
Oscar NavarroIn the midst of that , you said we take for granted the fact that our Bibles are readily available to us . You're right , we Westerners , we who have Bibles readily available , we who have them on our phones , we who have 10 of them in our homes and hardly ever think about them or read them . But I remember hearing the story about this pastor that I met and he was in the business of smuggling Bibles into areas in which they're illegal and he was telling me this story about smuggling Bibles in the Middle East in just very dangerous locations . I mean we're talking about like Backpacking into countries because you knew you couldn't get him in there anywhere else for the sake of delivering the Bible .
Oscar NavarroYeah , and he said he told me the story about this one time , how they like walked down into this basement of this home and somewhere in the Middle East and he meets his group of people and and he pulls out the Bibles and he starts handing them off and this one lady hands it to her and she just starts weeping . He said she clutched it into her Chast and fell to the ground and started crying and when she was finally like done , sobbing , she explained to him that she had been a Christian for ten years and only had seen a Bible once and never owned one for herself , which makes me just realize like she understood something about the word of God and the power that it has and the way in which he Reveals himself to us through the word . That made her cherish it . And if I'm being honest like that gives me Conviction . Yeah , I don't cherish my Bible the way she did .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , I heard stories back in the day , you know , when the , when the Soviet Union opened up to the world , communism fell . I remember someone talking about how , you know , they were going over to the the Soviet Union and they were giving out Bibles , and they just talked about how people would take them and like , go and and hold them , hold them to their chest and just begin to weep like I have God's word , you know , and here our Bibles are sitting on shelves collecting dust . You know it's it's , it's really tragic and you know , mark , the Lord is gracious to not only give us his word , ray Comfort .
Ray ComfortYes , no , not a question . Got a YouTube . There's a video called missionary footage captures a motion of Chinese Christians receiving Bibles for the first time . Wow , it's only fifty , say fifty seven seconds long , but you see them all weeping and crying , just like what you're talking about .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , yeah yeah , the blessings that we have mark . You know we often talk about the number of Different Bibles you can get on your phone , you know .
Mark SpenceI think twenty thousand . Yeah caps on your phone .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , I was twenty thousand absolute , yeah , bibles and and not just that but but even Biblical helps and commentaries and Greek and Hebrew lexicons and Books , and I mean even biographies like Willie tees , william Tyndale's life and stuff like that . What can you say to believers right now to stir them , especially the young ones listening to us again , not ex , I'm not exclusively them , because doesn't matter what age you are , but but especially the younger ones who have more energy and time and brain power what would you say to them to encourage them to buy up the time when it comes to making use of these things ? We're right in pair , yeah .
Mark SpenceYou know it's a good question . I , I mean , I wish I knew what that secret sauce was to do that ? How many times have we desired to maybe go back in the past and Maybe relive something ? Oftentimes we'll hear somebody ask the question you know , what would you say to a , an 18 year old ? Mark Spence when an 18 year old is , is setting us up . Yeah , and I say that to kids all the time
. What I would do , you know , and what I would study , how I would redeem the time .
Mark SpenceAnd I think the best thing we could do is be an example , because I don't know how to light that fire underneath someone unless you have that fire yourself . That's the how flows , the overflow of your life , where somebody looks in and says man , I want to mirror that behavior and that passion . And may we have and see Speakers and preachers raised up , where somebody leaves and says I want to know God the way they know God . Typically , what do we have ? Somebody shows him , says I want to preach the way he preaches . Or we go to a concert man , I wish I could play and sing the way he plays and sings . No , something is entirely different and foreign . What we need to know our God in such a way that when we talk about that , it becomes contagious behavior , covacius and desirous from an individual who says I want to know God , the way you're talking about God , and that would start with us .
Mark SpenceSo I think that that starts in that of remote place when nobody's looking , that we're not just treating the Bible as a textbook , but that blue book and and to crave it and to yearn for it and say , lord , unless you speak to me , I'm here in vain . Search me and try me and see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting . And there will be . As Was it Martin Luther Ray who said get on fire from God and people come from . John Wesley , that's right . Get on fire for God and people come from miles around to watch you burn . That . That is what are we doing Individually ? How many times have we listened to a sermon and said , man , I wish so and so was here . That was perfect for them . Yeah , no , we need to kind of stop thinking like that to some degree and To take things more personal , and I think that that fire will be carried off onto our kids and their friends and Surrounding , but it starts with us .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , I'm on , yeah and so . So , ray , let's get to Tyndale's death . And and what happened ? He was again in hiding . He went to Germany , which , because of what was going on with the Reformation , he knew that he'd be safe there . And so he goes there . He's in hiding . They always wanted to get him right . They always wanted it to be able to get him to put him to death like they did with , they tried to do with all the reformers , but they couldn't get to him until finally , the sky named Henry Phillips , who was quite a loser there's another way to put it but he was . What do you really think he was really , he was known to be a real kind of dirtbag and he was an Englishman .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , an Englishman , and he ended up sort of infiltrating that community and pretending like he wanted to kind of learn from .
Oscar NavarroI was like a spy .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , he was a Judas good way to put it , yeah . And so one day he ends up convincing Tyndale to go out to lunch with him , and so they they're leaving the place where Tyndale was hiding , and they were ready for him and they caught him . You know , basically he was in , he was in Brussels , in Belgium . They ended up putting him to death , so they strangled him first .
Ray ComfortThat's it sounds . I'd prefer strangulation to burning to death .
Emeal ZwayneWell , it was a mercy , because he was a scholar you know , it was not kind of like an honoring him , he was a scholar . When , I gonna let you , they did burn him . After that they did but they didn't . They didn't burn him alive , so they strangled him .
Ray ComfortBut that's not exactly exciting , because the blood vessels in your eyes burst when you're strangling horrible .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , so they did that . And then they put gunpowder all around his body , let him on fire . He basically blew up as one ended up happening to him and , as you had mentioned , ray , his last words God opened the eyes of the King of England .
Ray ComfortThat was Mark that mentioned that , oh , but although he did say it , yeah , mark .
Emeal ZwayneIt was Mark yeah .
Ray ComfortSo what was his crime again ?
Emeal ZwayneTranslating the Bible into the people's car Heresy . It makes me use .
Ray ComfortHe was fume when I think of his death , but I didn't mean it as a Fume yeah yeah , so his crime was translating the Bible . Yeah , how evil is that . And , by the way , it was the Catholic Church that did that .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , it was . And so , you know , we look back on all of this and I love that saying that says Jesus should receive the reward of his suffering and that's applicable , right . But I think we're so individualistic , so narcissistic , so egocentric as a culture and it's crept into the church that we don't ever think about honoring the memory and the sacrifice of those that have gone before us . It's just all about us , you know , and man like , how heartbroken would Tyndale be to see God's Word now in the hands of the masses in the English language and yet just neglect it . Never memorize scripture , never study scripture , never meditate on scripture . It's an utter travesty . And , ray , there's a spiritual warfare dynamic involved in getting into God's Word . I mean , you did a video not long ago about the satanic and demonic activity when you start to share the gospel with someone . You showed there's a picture of the girl on the thumbnail and her eyes are like looking away . That happens right in witnessing , absolutely .
Ray ComfortYeah , I wish I could have filmed when I was witnessing to Diana the what was the Carlos ? I couldn't believe the spiritual warfare that was going on . I would remember I was in a college and a guy comes along and sort of tractor making a noise . I said to Carlos oh Diana . I said Carlos , what's he going to do ? Get a chainsaw out . And saw down the tree . Two minutes later he did . It wasn't a proper chainsaw but I was like he's cutting down the tree .
Ray ComfortI thought , man , this is a battle . So we just waited for that to pass . And then helicopters come over , almost hover over the top of us , and I said there's a battle going on here for what we're talking about . And he smiled because he understood that . But yeah , and so basically what came against Tyndale was demonic forces . Yeah , satan didn't like what he did .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , and Mark , that same diabolical fallen angel and his minions are still at work in that regard . When it comes to us getting into the word , like with witnessing , there's that spiritual warfare . We see it in getting into God's word too , don't we ?
Mark SpenceYeah , we just need to do it . Nike has that mantra just do it . And their logo . By the way , they paid $35 for that logo .
Ray ComfortSomebody's missed out on a lot of my days .
Emeal ZwayneSomeone just did it . They ended up actually giving them more money later .
Ray ComfortOh , did they really . It's $15 .
Emeal ZwayneThey got it up to $50 .
Mark SpenceYeah $16 .
Mark SpenceYeah , we just need to do it . How many times are emotions and our thoughts ? I kind of get the best of us . We're just kind of wondering where we're at . First thing I do when I wake up in the morning is I read the word , and I'm a way to work . I usually go back and forth between a couple of different audiobooks and I was thinking , no , I want to get back into the word . So I just continued on listening to the word on the way . But there are so many distractions and so many lies and the only way you'll know what truth is is if you get inside the word , and if you're not inside the word , you're going to believe lies are true . So we need to hide God's word inside of us more than anything and become more convinced that God is real than what we see around us is real .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , yeah , oscar . For people listening who may be newer believers or even who have been believers for a long time , but they're like I just don't even know where to start . Like where do I start in the Bible ? Okay , I start in Genesis , that's fine . I get into Exodus okay I . Then I get into Leviticus , numbers Deuteronomy . It can be painstaking and then they feel lost . So what do you recommend in terms of where should someone start if they want to become a serious student of the word ?
Ray ComfortThe evidence .
Emeal ZwayneBible . I live in waterscom no no , no the evidence study .
Oscar NavarroBible . First let me just say that I've been there , I've shared with you before
. When I first became a Christian I kind of I was like , oh man , I'm a Christian .
Emeal ZwayneThere's a joke behind that , oh man Christian .
Oscar NavarroBut I went , you know , someone was like you need to get yourself a Bible . I went to a boarder's book store and I remember looking up the shelf and there was like hundreds of Bibles and there was different options and I didn't know what NIV was in KJB , you know , and for whatever reason , the first Bible I grabbed , pulled off the shelf , looked at the price tag and it was like a hundred bucks and I was like no way and I put it back and I walked away because I didn't understand the value of God's word and I didn't know which Bible to get . Somebody gifted me God's word and I remember sitting down and studying it for the first time and it being incredibly difficult and , if I'm being honest , it was incredibly boring .
Ray ComfortWe just started .
Oscar NavarroI don't remember Probably Genesis , which is really good . Now I realize it . Was it a preface ? It was a preface . Yeah , that's what it was . But here's my point .
Oscar NavarroFirst , I've been there before . If you're a new believer , if you haven't read the Bible in a while , if you're not a believer and you just want to sit down and read it , here's something that I've learned is that anytime I come to a place where there's tension between me and God's word , it's not because there's something inherently wrong with God's word . It's because there's something wrong with me . I'm not used to the beauty and the goodness and the power that's available to us and I've used this metaphor before , but I will continue to use it because I think it's so helpful and that is that there isn't a type of acquired taste for the beauty of God's word , but once you acquire it , a world , a kingdom opens up to you that is so satisfying to your soul .
Oscar NavarroSo the answer to your question , the first thing I would say , is don't give up on it . The second thing I would say is make it easy . Study it with a friend , pick a Bible study . There's so many amazing Bible studies out there that will walk you through small portions of God's word and help you understand the narrative that's happening there . So make it easy , use tools and resources that are available to you so that you have an easy route to understand the power that's available to you in the Word of .
Emeal ZwayneGod Even sermons online . We have so much available in that regard . And if , mark , someone just finds a series on a book in the Bible from a trusted Bible teacher and starts to just listen through that , that'll kind of give them a sense , especially if it's a good exposer . It'll give them a good sense of Scripture and kind of help them . Yeah .
Mark SpenceYou know I was talking about commentaries not too long ago . Somebody says , I'm sorry , what is a commentary ? And we kind of take that word for granted , but it really is supposed to come from a trusted teacher who's going to come alongside you and explain different things that you're reading and , if you're starting to dive deeper inside the Word , there are a lot of really great books and commentators and commentaries out there I might recommend to somebody . Ray had mentioned Matthew Henry . It's a free commentary that you can get online because he is so old and it's past copyright , public domain .
Mark SpenceYeah , you know the B series with Warren Wearsby . You know another great place to start . But then there's some really great people that are live today , like John MacArthur , who has exposited through God's Word . When we say exposited , it means just opening up God's Word and telling us what it says . What did the original author mean and say when he was writing to the original audience ? And puts proper culture and customs and traditions in their proper place . Yeah , right , so there's a lot of really good commentaries and commentators that are out there . Start with somebody simple perhaps , like Warren Wearsby or Matthew Henry .
Ray ComfortYeah , also , the Amplified Bible is a great way to understand Scripture . So when I have read the whole Amplified Bible , I'm holding back from making the usual joke . We kept the neighbors awake because we're reading it so loud . But yeah , it's just great to read because it takes Jesus wept and opens it up and it's a 40 minute read of that verse , yeah .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , there's just so so much available to us . And also getting a book that helps you understand the Bible . There are books on how to read the Bible , very simple ones . I mean just a plethora of them , if you just look them up online and then you can learn the different genres in Scripture the prophetic and the poetic , and the epistles in the New Testament and the gospels and the apocalyptic , which is the book of Revelation , and then you start to kind of get a sense for hey , this is what it is . And then hermeneutics we've done an episode on that before and that's how to interpret Scripture , how to understand it in its proper context .
Emeal ZwayneSo there's so much out there , and thank God for a man like William Tyndale , who was willing to stand up and risk his life and go against the flow in order to touch others , and you know he's been said by some to also be the father of the modern English language . English wasn't really standardized back in that time . The dictionary , like a real solid English dictionary , didn't come out until the 1700s , and so he really helped to create more of a standard and even coined like lots of phrases through his translation , which carried up phrases like in the twinkling of an eye , a moment in time . Let there be light , my brother's keeper . Signs of the times lead us not into temptation , but deliver us from evil . Steve Lawson highlighted all these , so that's you know it's . It's amazing what an impact he ended up having .
Ray ComfortAnd speaking of giving out God's word , if you're a layperson and you want to do something wonderful , join the Gideons International . I was in for seven years I think Scotty's in it , my son Daniel's in it where they give out Bibles to hotels and motels and schools and , all over the place , millions and millions of copies of God's word .
Oscar NavarroSo if Tyndale had caught a glimpse of even just what the Gideons do , he would have been kind of excited , that's good you know we talked about the reality that William Tyndale would look now and see so many people in our culture just have Bibles sitting around doing nothing and he would be burdened . The flip side of that is , I think William Tyndale would be so blessed that God used his faithfulness , that there are millions of Christians that are sitting around having devotions with their children opening God's word in English Amen . So God has done a good work with his faithfulness . Yeah , big time .
Emeal ZwayneSo , yeah , so praise God for that , and friends , again , we mention it every podcast . We do it for a reason and this is fitting as we're talking about the translation of God's word in English but the evidence study Bible is just a huge resource that we believe can help you , and a lot of you who have been listeners to the podcast have gotten it and you have written and have told us wow , this has really impacted my life . So it's the Bible , and Ray has compiled a lot of wonderful information . A lot of it has been contributed by himself , but other quotes and answers to objections and difficult questions and anecdotes , and I mean it's , it's packed and we think you'll be encouraged by it . So remember to check it out . Don't forget the Ten Commandments coin and the gold one as a gift for your friends and family , and Living Waters mug . Why are you laughing at me ? Comfort .
Ray ComfortThat voice was really good for the gold coin , coinkoy coin for your family .
Emeal ZwayneAll right , friends . There you have it . Don't forget to give us your comments and thoughts and questions at podcastatlivingwaterscom . Give us that rating , give us those comments and , yeah , be a good person . Thank you for joining us . Be a good person . We'll see you here next time on the Living Waters podcast , where we have no idea what we're doing . Glad William Tyndale knew what he was doing .
