Speaker 1

All right , so we pick it up here . In verse seven , a woman of Samaria came to draw water . Jesus said to her give me a drink , for his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food . Then the woman of Samaria said to him how is it that you , being a Jew , ask a drink from me , a Samaritan woman ? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans , is the commentary . Jesus answered and said to her if you knew the gift of God and who it is , who says to you , give me a drink , who man ? Don't get emotional air up he would have asked him and he would have given you living water . Right , that's the way Jesus framed that . If you knew who's asking you for it , you would have asked me Remember to wash behind your ears , or wash for some parts of the country .

Speaker 1

Turn the lights off when you leave a room . I'm gonna count to three , one , two . Don't make me finish counting . Turn off the TV . I said turn off the TV off because I said so . What did you say ? We don't play with our food . What am I reciting , guys ?

Yeah , so I had a stick and I just whacked it back and forth and hit whoever I hit , and whoever was innocent this time be guilty next time . So I kind of aimed it out Reconfort Parenting tips for .

Speaker 2

And your kids are grown up .

Speaker 3

I'll say to Laura I'll go . You're fidgety , do you have to go potty ?

Speaker 2

That's a nice way to put it . I say to the dog every night yeah , yeah , out in the lawn , go potty , yeah potty . She goes on command now , which is great , oh does she Really . I just say go potty treat .

Speaker 1

Yeah , seriously , this dog must be , of all dogs , the dog that has ever gotten more treats than any other dog . Yeah , lots of treats . Why , Ray , do you do that to your dog ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , well , when I put her sunglasses on , she gets a treat . When I take them off , she gets a treat for her in the glasses , because I wanted to know that I'm happy she's wearing sunglasses .

Speaker 1

What happens if you don't have a treat to give her ? I make around the head . Not true people , not true . Does she obey Ray ?

Speaker 2

Ah yeah , she's a great dog , except every day and she's done a I'm not exaggerating a thousand times . The glasses come off whenever she meets someone . I'm not kidding , what do you mean ? Whenever I stop and say , would you like to come on YouTube , she's ripping her glasses off . She keeps them on all the way around there , all the way around back , but all the way back home , but she takes them off every time . I meet a new person and I say don't do that .

Speaker 1

How does she do it with her ?

Speaker 2

paw . Yes , she puts a paw up and pulls them out . I don't know how to stop it without saying I can try staples . No no they don't sell anything to do with dogs , Mark .

Speaker 1

Stiples . Pull your pants up , don't put your finger in there or your tongue . Don't put your finger in there or your tongue . It's like a light socket Electrical socket's right . I'm not kidding . What did I just say ? Don't make me turn this car around , not you turn this car around . Go ask dad , go ask mom . Okay , so maybe I said a couple of these . You know you have Mark . It's interesting . You know , when I think back on things , my mom and my dad would say to me as a kid I mean , they really get ingrained in your brain Put that gun down , shut up you idiot . Basically what I heard . But yeah , anything come to mind that you guys remember .

Speaker 2

Yeah , do you know what to do if you walk in a room and a kid's pointing a gun at you ? You know what to do ? I read this years ago and I thought this was really good . Just say look at that , distract them .

Speaker 3

Oh , and then what ?

Speaker 2

Well then you go for the gun or something I don't know what comes next ? But you distract the kid .

Speaker 1

I look over there . I know that trick .

Speaker 2

What are we ?

Speaker 3

laughing , for I saw something similar . If you ever have an issue with like a home invader right , Somebody breaks into your house and they're there to rob what you need to say is listen , I was here first . Maybe you get the other side of this couch and we can split the proceeds Split the proceeds .

Speaker 1

You know that's funny . You know you think about , yeah , the things that you don't expect people to do . I remember , Mark , years ago , when we were in Europe we were doing the Europe tour . You remember that right ? Yes , a good friend of ours that had gone with us , some guy in the airport was acting all crazy with him . We weren't there because he had gone ahead of us , but he told us about it when we met up . He said some guy was like acting all crazy and he just went , raaah , oh Val , he put his hands up and there he goes , raaah , and the guy's like oh , what did ?

Speaker 1

he do , he just took off .

Speaker 3

Acting like a velociraptor . Oh , I thought he was crazy .

Speaker 1

I did that one time to a guy . He came up to me and he was asking for cigarettes , to give him money to buy cigarettes at a gas station . He's like , hey , man , give me some , I wanna get some cigarettes bro . And he was like a spoiled kid . He came out of his mom's car but he was maybe , you know , early twenties and come on , man , you know . So I'm like and I just started rapping freestyle . I did , I just started . He's like whoa whoa and then I gave him a gospel track , then left . But yeah , the unexpected Ray . What did you hear most often growing up as a kid from your parents ?

Speaker 2

Oh , you don't think .

Speaker 1

Oh yeah , your dad used to say that .

Speaker 2

Yeah , he said it to a 10 year old and I was like I said before . You know what that does to a 10 year old ? Absolutely nothing , cause I didn't think .

Speaker 1

I didn't worry him at all , so he was right . Yeah , boy , I remember .

Speaker 2

He said that because I was on the top of our . He just knew I'd been on the top of our big garage jumping on it and saying it moves when I jump .

Speaker 1

But it's true , ray , you kind of don't think . Yeah , like Peter and Petrus , you don't think about consequences like today . Oh , by the way , friends , you may notice , as I said on the last podcast episode , there's a missing voice .

Speaker 2

This is on video .

Speaker 1

You're seeing on video . Well , you've seen , but you heard or didn't hear a missing voice Oscar Navarro is not here . He's not here , but we have a dummy here in his place . And this goes to what I was saying earlier . Ray , you don't think , cause you're trying to make the dummy sit and you didn't even like think about it . I said it doesn't sit down , now make it sit down . Yeah , it's gonna bend , but you could have cracked it . You could have brought an audit kit , audit kit . Yeah , you don't think ahead .

Speaker 2

By the way , this isn't a dummy . This is Ernest , oh Ernest .

Speaker 1

Yeah . We've got three dummies in our store Ernest , I don't have a name Ernest .

Speaker 2

And so it's a nice name .

Speaker 1

I've heard a radio program years ago that I heard it was called Frank and Ernest . Isn't that clever , frank and Ernest . Oh that's good , yeah , anyway , yeah , I remember my mom would constantly yell at me to fix the towel in the bathroom after I wiped my hands .

Speaker 2

I mean straighten it up .

Speaker 3

Wait a minute . You had to be told to clean something .

Speaker 1

I know right , that's probably what did it to me , my mom . My mom was so fastidious . If she was on the other side of the house and you washed your hands and went across to that towel and dripped water on the floor , she would hear it .

Speaker 3

It was weird . That's where you get it .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah , my mom was very , very tidy and clean and neat , that's nice . Yeah , what about you , mark ? What abusive words did you hear ?

Speaker 3

From your parents . Stop being the smartest man in the room I heard continually . Stop bouncing up and down . I had endless energy On your Pogo stick . No , I would just kind of bounce . I was so fidgety , you're doing it now with your legs , I would just bounce continually . So I was like 110 pounds at six foot eight . I mean just skin and bones always moving . So they're always telling me to stop bouncing .

Speaker 1

You know , I've noticed . I don't know if it's gotten worse with age , but I rarely am not bouncing my leg up and down when I'm sitting .

Speaker 2

You guys do that too , that's in the book 101 things Shaking my leg , 101 things husbands do to annoy their wives . That's in the book Really , yeah , cause it's very common .

Speaker 1

Is it common ? Is it like a man thing ?

Speaker 2

It's a man thing , but I've explained it in the book . It's all to do with rhythm . We just can't help it move with a rhythm of life , and that's what's happening .

Speaker 1

Seriously , I cannot . I catch myself all the time .

Speaker 2

So if we jumped now and held your leg , your whole body would start going like that .

Speaker 1

But I'm thinking people must get annoyed . You know , and I'm not noticing , I'm doing it , but I'm always shaking my leg .

Speaker 2

Is he looking at airports ? Men do it . I've watched them . I've tried to film them from a distance . Men do it in airports where they're just sitting there . You do it , Mark , you shake your leg . He's doing it now . I was watching .

Speaker 3

No , I'm keeping it still purposely . You know , right after your father passed , a few days after your father passed , we were on a flight up to Sacramento and I noticed you sitting on the plane with your leg fidgeting . Like there was intervals of like 10 seconds of goodbye , and then you would just shake it uncontrollably , was he asleep ? And then you just stop .

Speaker 1

No , he was awake . You don't do that , mark , I'm sure I do . You do it , ray .

Speaker 2

I'm trying to stop myself doing it now . It's psychological .

Speaker 1

Is it like a dog wagging its tail ?

Speaker 2

It is . It's so similar . Like I said , it's to do with rhythm . We just want to move it . It's caffeine .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I got rhythm , I wanted coffee . I wanted to move with them because I got rhythm . Ooh , bustin' rams . All right guys . Enough of this silliness , ridiculousness .

Speaker 1

We have a comment

Woman at the Well Lessons

Speaker 1

rams . This is from Jean Ginny Kay . Jeanie Kay , essential to the Christian Walk . I love this podcast . I appreciate the wisdom and humility these four godly men have to offer three today . I do recommend they start putting a recommended book list or mentioned book list in their notes , because there's so many recommendations I want to read in the future . I love how silly they are , but never downplay the consequences of sin and the urgency of salvation . This is my first podcast that I've left a review for , because everyone needs to know about and listen to this podcast . Easy is my favorite . Don't hate me , ray . Oh , you're my favorite now . Jeanie Kay , thank you so much .

Speaker 3

Well , I could recommend a book based on what you were talking about earlier today about all of how to raise your kids , which is Shepherding a Child's Heart , by Ted Trip Absolutely Really great book , highly recommended . If you have a child out of control , you're wondering how do I raise these kids ? Where do I begin ? Start with that book .

Speaker 1

Speaker 2

And they get the booklets now too . I started putting the little booklets in . Oh yeah , just under four million of those booklets have sold . Oh , those booklets are phenomenal .

Speaker 3

So make sure to get those friends . Don't forget the Living Waters mug and the evidence study Bible all at livingwaterscom . Woo , great comfort . You're good , but we try that in a whistle . Living Waters .

Speaker 2

You cannot smile in whistles impossible , I try .

Speaker 1

You know , my daughter Julia is brilliant . She could not figure out how to whistle .

Speaker 2

As a baby , as a child .

Speaker 1

As a kid for the longest time . Yeah , they go . She couldn't whistle and she didn't know how to blow her nose . She , how do you ?

Speaker 3

not know how to blow her nose .

Speaker 2

Well , that's what I no , but most kids are like that . You put a handkerchief or a tissue of them , they blow and they go .

Speaker 1

No , you tell her blowing she would sniff , like it's so adorable .

Speaker 2

Adorable one of she's going to be embarrassed when she hears this .

Speaker 1

No , she'll love it , cute little Julia's . Yeah , beautiful woman of God now . Yeah , all right , friends , make sure to check that all out .

Speaker 2

And she's very spiritual , good , very Godly .

Speaker 1

All right , friends , today we are talking about lessons from the woman at the well Now , Ray , when I told you that this was something that we should discuss or maybe Mark came up with- the idea ?

Speaker 3

No , I don't remember . Wait before you ask or before you say , what are we going to say ? I went to chat in GPT and I said tell me a knock knock joke concerning the woman at the well . You did not , I did . And this is what it said Knock , knock . Who's there , well , well , who Well ? Well well , look who's here for a refreshing chat with Jesus at the well .

Speaker 1

No , that's a chat . Oh , man Ray , you need to tutor chat GPT on some things yeah . I love it yeah .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I love it .

Speaker 1

It has some positive elements . Well , what happens ? I get asked .

Speaker 2

I really get asked to write an article about something and I think what do I know about that ? So I just type it , like Mark did , and I get these thoughts that just provokes thought . I don't copy word for word , but it provokes thought . I never thought of going in that direction . It's really good for that .

Speaker 3

It removes the writer's block is what you're saying .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I think that .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I really don't use it much at all , but the few times I have I'll ask for like bullet point kind of ideas , like you do , ray , and then from that it gets your creativity going . You're able to do that . How do we get on that ? Oh , knock , knock . Oh yeah , I think is asking AI to tell them jokes .

Speaker 3

I tell them I go that was a terrible joke . Give me another . I go no , make it so bad that it's a dad joke . And then those are the ones that I like Wow .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I blew up today .

Speaker 1

We'll often use it with well , we've used it a number of times with Ken Ham where we'll just do these little poems , We'll just plug in a few words and it'll come up with this funny little Pwn Diddy , diddy or poem , whatever . All right , guys . The woman at the wet .

Speaker 2

How do people get past the ?

Speaker 3

first five or 10 minutes , I have no idea . Do you want to ? Maybe you read it the portion , so we have context or anything .

Speaker 1

So let me just first say that this is an account that is very dear to me because it gives us insight once again into the heart of Jesus . In our last episode we talked about Cornelius , and so we were dealing there with a Gentile and this was like whoa , what are you talking about , gentile ? And today we're dealing with Jesus interacting with a woman , which was a big deal .

Speaker 2

No , she's a big woman too , the woman of some area , some area , ray , you've been waiting a whole time . Well , you started it , but this is a big deal .

Speaker 1

You pushed the button . I know I said the wrong things , so anyway , this is significant because it once again gives insight into Jesus' heart , not only toward Gentiles but toward women , and so we pick up the story in John 4 , beginning in verse one . Therefore , when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John though Jesus himself did not baptize but his disciples he left Judea and departed again to Galilee , but he needed to go through Samaria . So he came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar , near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph . Now , jacob's well was there . Jesus , therefore , being wearied from his journey , sat thus by the well . It was about the sixth hour . So , guys , let's pause there for a second . It's a little longer , even longer , two seconds , three seconds and talk about Samaria in general . The Samaritans , we know , were not very admired by the Jews . So , mark , give us some insight .

Speaker 2

It was mutual , though it was not .

Speaker 1

Oh , it was yeah , but yeah .

Speaker 3

I mean that's right . I mean , you consider , I like the way it started off , though , when you're saying this is that Jesus needed to , or he must , go through that area , and then he sends his disciples on ahead to a different area . I just love the way it's all pictured . But even the Samaritans , they would come up with new names for the different areas , right , mount Jerizim is probably the base of where they're at , but the Jews would call it something else , anything that they would agree upon . The only thing that they would agree upon was that they just did not like each other . Right , there was just this animosity one for the other , and this is the first place where we see Jesus revealing himself as those words , as the Messiah . Like , where did Jesus ever claim to be the Messiah ? This is it . Here's your text John 4 , 25 , 26 . He's the Messiah .

Speaker 3

Yeah , there was a hatred amongst them , so this is a very taboo for Jesus to go there . And bear in mind that this woman is going at the heat of the day . Yeah , she probably tired of the ridicule , tired of people making fun of her without any friends , going at the least desirous moment , when it's really hot , getting water . And then there's a guy there as well , and this guy confronts her and then talking to her and she realizes I perceive that you're a Messiah . I mean , I perceive your prophet right , and there's the issue there . So Jesus is meeting this woman right where she's at , and that's what he's done in the past . That's what he'll do in the present as well . But there's animosity amongst each other , for sure .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and Jews did not typically travel through Samaria .

Speaker 3

That's right . They would go . They would take miles . They'd go to go around Samaria . They wouldn't go through there .

Speaker 1

And he would have , you know , in the normal course of things , done that . But Jesus had a mission , that's right , and he was doing the unthinkable in that culture on two fronts first of all , interacting with Samaritans and , second of all , a Samaritan woman . Yeah , and Ray , I mean Jesus . He really was in a sense , if you would , counter-cultural , in the spiritual sense of bringing truth to people .

Speaker 2

Well , he was the law incarnate , so to speak . He loved his neighbors himself . God is love and Jesus is love , and love doesn't have any bounds . And you know what thrills me about this ? This is the view touched on it .

Speaker 2

King James says he must needs go through Samaria . That word must can either mean a thousand wild stampeding elephants or it can mean it's essential . I think it's the second one . It was essential that Jesus went through Jerusalem . So I went through Samaria , and that's because of that woman . And he needed well , god doesn't need anything , but he needed to go to a place called Kaikora in 1972 , where there was a young man who was 22 , who was crying out for reality , and he reached down and touched my life as he touched this woman's life . So this thrills me to think that he needed to go through Samaria and he needed to go to that place called Kaikora to save this wretch , this unclean thing , or all is an unclean thing . Scripture says all because of his grace , and words can't express the inattix , we'll see , of my gratitude and that it's just exploded in me for the last . Every time I meditate on that moment , I think I regularly say well , tears my eyes , lord , thank you , thank you for saving me , and it's so inadequate .

Speaker 1

God condescending . And Mark , you think about how this moment in time was destined . It was predestined by God to happen . There are no accidental moments in God's economy , but everything that happened that day to lead that woman to go out at that time and Jesus to intersect with her , it was all preplanned by the Lord .

Speaker 3

It wasn't on her calendar that day to interact with the Messiah , but it has always been on the calendar of Jesus leading up to that moment we mentioned inside of our what is it film . People say , well , I don't deserve a second chance or , in this case with this woman , a sixth chance or a seventh chance , and we point out that , listen , you didn't deserve her first chance either . He's the God of second chances and third chances and fourth chances , and I want you . As you read the story , there's something very significant that stands out to me , and that is she's nameless inside the Bible , that her name is not mentioned there , but Christ knows her name right , that God knew what your name was going to be when your parents were juggling between half a dozen names . But what's important to note here perhaps why her name is not mentioned , is because she's not the focal point of the story .

Speaker 3

Christ is and the work that he has done right . So it doesn't matter what you have done . Your sin is no match for the grace and mercy of Christ . You could be a thousand times worse than you currently are , a thousand times , but you are no match for the forgiveness found in Christ alone if you come to him on his terms , amen . This woman with multiple men and who knows what came of this and what she's living with and what she's living through and the ramifications of it . But God just says you know what ? Let's have a chat .

Speaker 1

It's such a great reminder , mark , because I think , while we talk about the use of the law and evangelism and the importance of breaking the heart to heart with the law , there are those who have been schooled by the law . There are those who recognize they are radical sinners . They're imprisoned , you know they've committed all these crimes , and they are on the other side of it , thinking no way . God would never accept me . And for this account , to be here in scripture , just like Paul talking about himself being the chief of sinners , is a reminder to us of why Christ came . And with those , I think , who see themselves so wretched , there's a deception of self-righteousness from another angle , of needing to attain it . I need to attain righteousness by myself in order for God to accept me . So they try to clean up their lives when Christ says come to me , you could never wash away what you've done , but I can do it with my blood .

Speaker 3

You know God , with his accusatory finger pointing down at the sinful nature of man , that hand changes and it opens , and then it embraces the sinner . That comes to him Right . Vance Havner said Christ did not come to rub it in , he came to rub it out . And oftentimes we are reluctant to come to God or to confess our sin and we think well , what's going to happen next ? Well , what's going to happen next is you're going to find forgiveness . What you're going to find next is a pathway towards righteousness . What's going to happen next is you're going to realize that God has the ultimate plan for your life that you could never even come up with . That's what's going to come . That's what's going to happen when you come clean and you confess your sins before God .

Speaker 1

Amen .

Speaker 3

That's good .

Speaker 1

All right , so we pick it up here in verse 7 .

Encountering Jesus With Living Water

Speaker 1

A woman of Samaria came to draw water . Jesus said to her give me a drink , for his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food . Then the woman of Samaria said to him how is it that you , being a Jew , ask a drink from me , a Samaritan woman ? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans . As the commentary , Jesus answered and said to her if you knew the gift of God and who it is who says to you give me a drink , Don't get emotional . Arab , you would have asked him and he would have given you living water . Right , that's the way Jesus framed that . If you knew who's asking you for it , you would have asked me .

Speaker 2

Well , it really shows us her reaction , as the natural man receives not the things of Spirit , of God . And she thought he was talking about physical water . And she said give me this water , they thirst not . And he said if you knew , I'm going to start off on a little spiel that I use regularly . But Jesus , if I may say this , was tapping into something we should tap into too . This woman had eternity written upon her heart . There was something in her that cried oh , I don't want to die . And that's so often overlooked when we're witnessing .

Speaker 2

When I witness to someone more than often , I'll just say right at the beginning are you afraid of death ? And they'll say a little bit . I say a little bit . Are you kidding ? It's a horror beyond words . Someone's going to put you in a box and bury you six feet under the ground . It's horrific . I said the Bible says you're haunted by the fear of death all your lifetime . I can see their eyes widen and I can read what they're thinking . They're thinking how does this guy know ? I think I've mentioned this before , but it's just such an important point . I know because the Bible says you're haunted by the fear of death all your lifetime and we need to tap into that .

Speaker 2

And it's like the illustration I regularly give of a waitress in a restaurant . See three businessmen come in , sit at a table . They're willing and dealing millions of dollars . Three-piece suits , little suit cases , little cases on the table . Is she intimidated ? No , she just walks up and say can I take your order ? Why is she so bold ? Because she knows she has what they want . They're there to eat food and so she's bold in that . That's her confidence . And we have what this world wants more than anything . That's a cry in every human heart oh , I don't want to die . I don't want to die . We have we're not religious . We have everlasting life as a free gift of God .

Speaker 2

Jesus was not an ordinary man . Never a man spoke like this man . He said I am the way , the truth and the life . Christ , who is our life , he that has the Son , has life . I'm coming . He might have life . This is the source of life that lives within the Christian . And we have life in Christ . And if the world knew what we had and this is what Jesus was saying if you knew who it was that was speaking to you , you'd ask him he'll give you living water and we can learn from that , tap into the sinner's will to live . I can open the eyes of an atheist and make him , within two minutes , desire what I've got in Christ by just saying Old Testament God promised he'd destroy death . New Testament tells us how he did it . Are you interested ? Wow , and he's an atheist . He said , yeah , go on , tell me why . Because God's written eternity upon his heart . Wow , so good .

Speaker 1

Say , yeah , we can meditate on that forever . I mean , oh man , couldn't slip that through . All right , yeah , mark , that is a man . So she's sitting there and she's like what are you doing ? Like this is and and he was probably evidently to her by just as demeanor , you know a rabbi . And she's like wait , what are you doing here ? You're not even supposed to be talking , you're asking me yeah , like , maybe he's up to something nefarious .

Speaker 3

Yeah , like , why are you out here to meet with me with nobody else around ? And then from the gentle words in the spirit for which he delivered the message , it was quickly evident of who he was and what he wanted that she has nothing to offer him , but he has everything to offer her .

Speaker 2

Boy , if we knew who Jesus was . I mean , it's just , it's so mind blowing that this is . I asked someone the other day . I said do you believe God sees everything ? And they said yeah , do you know that he sees the middle atom of the atom that's in right in the middle of the sun . He sees it , he knows what's inside the atom that's in the middle of the sun and this earth fits in the volume of the sun a million times . God sees that atom because he made it . And if we knew that this was God manifest in the flesh , this was God in human form , we would just become jelly . It's just , it's too mind blowing . And he was saying that if you knew who it was , that's if you can get the revelation that this is God manifest in the flesh and he can destroy death in your life , that's all you need to know . That's enough to bring you to his feet .

Speaker 1

Yeah and Ray . For us as believers , knowing who Jesus is and knowing Jesus , it just magnifies the atrocity of hearing someone blaspheme his name , doesn't it ? Yes , absolutely yeah . I've heard people professing religious people blaspheme the name of Jesus like it just rolls right off their lips , and these are people that are like they're in church or like they're doing and just blaspheming .

Speaker 2

Jesus , and even the name , the word Jesus , J-E-Z comes from a derivative of Jesus . Using it as a curse word . And but Jesus is another one that's quite popular , that is . I can't even mention what it actually is , but it scared the bejesus out of me is what they say , and it shows the absolute contempt people have for Jesus Christ . He said I , the world hates me because I testify of its deeds that they're evil . And what greater contempt can you show for God than to use his name as a curse word ?

Speaker 1

That's your way . Yeah , big time . All right , so the story

Living Water and Spiritual Understanding

Speaker 1

continues . Verse 11, . The woman said to him sir , you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep . Where do you get that living water ? Are you greater than our father Jacob , who gave us the well and drank from it himself , as well as his sons and his livestock ?

Speaker 2

As well as his sons . I get the joke . Ah , bam , bam bam .

Speaker 1

So , mark , this , I think , is another good case and point where the natural man does not understand the things of the spirit of God . It's almost like with the disciples , right when Jesus was with them in the boat crossing Galilee , and he mentions the leaven of Herod and the Pharisees and they start freaking out oh no , it's cause we didn't bring bread . Their minds were on the physical . And he says , man , having eyes you not see , having ears you not understand . And he references the two times he fed the massive multitudes and how many leftovers they took up in terms of baskets . And he's like you just don't see . But here she has , she's her mind's fixated on physical water .

Speaker 3

Yeah , and oftentimes we'd see with Jesus in the parables and the apostles they would say well , now you're speaking plainly to us . You know I don't understand . You know all of this and how it works . I just know where I need to be . I need to be drawing near to the Lord . I need to be opening up commentaries and books and trusting Him . You know , I had a friend that became a pastor we do out in Idaho and before he moved to Idaho to become a pastor , I asked him are you sure the Lord is calling you out here ? He said I'm not sure , but I'm taking a step of faith and I trust that he's going to do what he needs to do . You know , and it lasted for a season and he ended up coming back . You know not Idaho Montana excuse me .

Speaker 3

Yeah and Listen , I don't understand why I can understand certain things . Or when I go to communicate something to one of my kids or my wife and they're just not getting it , and then all of a sudden somebody else comes along and says something , says hey , did you know what EZ just shared with me ? And I look over at my son , noah , and I go Noah , I've been sharing that with you since you were three years old . But sometimes things just click and that's how God uses the body . So don't grow weary , just keep learning , keep growing .

Speaker 1

Now I'm an organized summary . No , okay , you know what I mean . You know what I mean . I'm just kidding to say , oh man , you've been explaining who you're talking to .

Speaker 1

Yeah , it's our Oscar sit-in today . Sitting in for Oscar , all right . So verse 13, . Jesus answered and said to her whoever drinks of this water will thirst again , but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will thirst , but the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water , springing up into everlasting life Ray . Your eyes are closed and deep , deep .

Speaker 2

Well , I'm thinking never a man spoke like this man . Never a man said the things that this man said . Jesus , compared to every other spiritual leader , is like the noonday son compared to a flashlight without batteries there's no comparison . I mean never a man .

Speaker 2

Look , listen to what he just said Whoever drinks the water should be a well springing up to everlasting life . He said this . He said Marvel not at this . In other words , something's coming up that's kind of hmm , little , pretty heavy . The hour is coming when all that are in their graves shall hear my voice . That's like billions of people , and they'll be raised up in judgment . He's either crazy or he's got in human form , right .

Speaker 1

I know I was reading in my Bible reading . I was on the Sermon on the Mount and Matthew five and man just so rich Reading the words of Jesus talking about loving our enemies .

Speaker 2

How do we get them ? I mean , who was there , or their shorthand , or what ? No tape recorder .

Speaker 1

Well , like he said , the spirit of God will bring to remembrance all things that he taught them and you do . There are those moments as a believer Mark , I know you relate to this where you're reading certain portions of scripture and you're like there is no way a human mind could have conceived this and it's his spirit bearing witness in us . I mean the spirit of God teaching us all things and revealing .

Speaker 3

This is defined revelation , yeah before , when I became a Christian , I could not explain what happened to me . And before I was a Christian , I was believing in evolution , I was pro-choice . And then there's this paradigm shift , right , my whole life had changed and the only way to explain it is that I became a new creation , that I had a new heart . But I'm reading that in the text , I'm like yes , exactly yes , that's what's happened to me , and what I couldn't put into words was already put down into words inside the word of God .

Speaker 1

Wow , and as a new believer , I remember I was brand new and hardly got through . You know much of the Bible yet , but I was in a continuation school . I was probably a month old in the Lord and I had to write a paper for English class .

Speaker 3

Continuation school because , because I'd kind of kicked out of two high schools .

Speaker 1

I should be the dummy sitting in this seat , unbelievable . And . But I remember I wrote this paper and I basically wrote my testimony . I remember I wrote in there this portion and I wrote how can a blind man ask one who is blind to guide his path , lest they both stumble ? And I remember then later coming across that in scripture and I'm like , oh , you know , it was just so , like whoa and yeah , and you just think of how do you explain everlasting life ?

Speaker 1

I remember one time walking into the office at school for something and there's this girl , real , beautiful , popular girl , sitting behind the counter and I had this permanent grin on my face . I could not , and I tried to bring it down . I could not for the life of me , bring that smile down and I was just like . I was so consumed with Jesus . He had so revolutionized my life . I was just like she's , like what's wrong with you ? I couldn't even talk , I just pointed up I'm like she's like she's just shaking her head , you know . But yeah , you can't put it into words , but those who know him understand , those who have tasted of him know .

Speaker 3

My spirit bears witness , with his spirit , that I'm a child of God . Somebody come along , says you're deceived .

Speaker 1

Okay , yeah , just don't get it .

Speaker 2

I've joined . I've joined , I've joined speakable . Let me explain it Easy for you to say yeah .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and I love how Jesus described it . You know , like this water welling up within you , that will a fountain of water springing up in the everlasting life , just like this geyser , you know ? Pfft , ah , I love it . The woman said to him , verse 15 , sir , give me this water that I may not thirst nor come here . To draw Again her mind back to the physical , she's like whoa , there's this like H2O . It'll keep me from having to come all the way out here .

Speaker 2

And boy , how we take it for granted running water , right , I mean , it's just like you didn't have that , don't go there just yet , because I want to go there in a few months .

Speaker 1

Oh , okay , I went , gave it a . So Jesus said to her , verse 16 , go call your husband and come here . What a random thing to say . That's true , yeah . The woman answered and said I have no husband . Jesus said to her you have well said the word wells , you saw Well well , well , what are Jesus was ?

Speaker 1

using a play on here . You have well said I have no husband , for you have had five husbands and the one whom you now have is not your husband , and that you spoke truly . You guys know , like Conviction , yeah , like what that must have been like . Mark , I know you've had times in your life where you've just said to someone I think you're doing this and they're like , oh and , but that moment of like when someone is peering into your soul and into your life , you know , and so he calls her out , just brings it out right there .

Speaker 2

Seventh commandment .

Speaker 1

Yeah , what's he doing there ?

Speaker 2

Right , bringing the knowledge of sin , appealing to the conscience . Paul said I had not known sin , but by the law , and it's the law that makes sin exceedingly sinful . And so that's what was happening .

Speaker 1

Wow . So now look at how she responds , verse 18 . The woman said to him sir , I perceive that you're a prophet . Our fathers worshiped on this mountain , and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is a place where one ought to worship . Jesus said to her woman believe me , the hours coming when you will , neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem , worship the father . You worship that which you do not know . We know what we worship , for salvation is of the Jews , but the hours coming , and now is when the true worshipers will worship the father in spirit and truth , for the father is seeking such to worship him . God is spirit , and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth . So , mark , he points out to this woman all these things about her , and she well , you must be a prophet . But then immediately she pivots right and said well , how do you know ? Then , just like , well , okay , well , the Jews say this and the Samaritans say this , and so what do you say ? So what's going on there ?

Speaker 3

Well , I love the fact here that Jesus is pointing out the fact that the father is seeking after those who worship him in spirit and truth . And there's also a two point takeaway here that we are worshipers . Our worshipers reflect who we are and what we do on the day to day basis . Tozer said at one time I don't desire you , lord , but I desire to have a desire for you , and at the moment that's all I have to bring you . I know that I should be desiring you , but I don't desire you . But I desire to want to have a desire for you .

Speaker 3

And he's being honest and truthful before the Lord . So to be truthful , to worship him in spirit and in truth , is twofold . One is you're being honest . This is how I'm feeling . It doesn't mean you're gonna give God a piece of your mind . There's reverence as you approach God and as you try to figure things out . But more importantly than that is the idea of worshiping God in honesty , of who he is . Yeah , right , I mean , how many times have we gone to God in prayer and we said God , I just asked that you'd be with us right now . He said that he's gonna be with us Right .

Speaker 3

I pray that you provide for us . He said he's gonna provide right , and we almost have wasted words to some extent , not knowing God , not knowing his word . So the more you know God has revealed inside the word , you're able to worship him in truth . You could be honest and you could just approach him who he is and you know that you have what you ask as you pray according to his will .

Speaker 1

Wow , yeah , you know , Mark . Our pastor this past Sunday said something that was really profound in terms of what you're referring to like asking God questions . He said you can ask God questions without questioning God , and that's a good dichotomy there , right , Like you look at the Psalms , right ? I mean , there are sincere questions in the midst of pain and lament and mourning , but there's a difference between that and questioning .

Speaker 3

God's not on trial . We need to be careful on how we approach him . You know it very well . May be that we walk away saying you know God , your ways are above my ways . I don't understand this , but I understand that I'm walking by faith . I understand that you're in control and that's okay . It's well with my soul , yeah amen .

Speaker 1

All right

Encountering Christ

Speaker 1

Ray . Now here this powerful point . The woman said to him I know that Messiah is coming , who is called Christ . When he comes , he will tell us all things Jesus said to her . I speak to you , am he ?

Speaker 2

I don't know if the word he's in the original . It's an italics and multi-bible , yes , yeah .

Speaker 1

Yeah , but he's , yeah , he's revealing to her here that he is the I am and I'm just trying . It's just like one of those moments where you can imagine you know , a time stands still and you're just like faced with reality . And I love the way it picks up and it says and the disciples came . You know , and who are you talking to ? It says then the woman left her water pot , went her way into the city and said to the men come see a man who told me all things that I ever did . Could this be the Christ ? And they went out of the city and came to him . Wow , I can't talk , right , okay .

Speaker 2

I'll pick it up here . Say something you remind me of when I burst into tears . And I watched Ben , wasn't Ben at the 10 commandments ? I went with my dad as a new Christian . I didn't realize what had really happened to me and suddenly on the movie screen I hear I am , that I am .

Speaker 1

Now I just burst into tears , and that's what Jesus is saying to this woman .

Speaker 2

well , I am . I am here , but I absolutely love this . Where she left her water pot ? She left it . Water in the Middle East , especially in those times , was life . You don't leave your water pot , but she left it and we take water , for which is so for granted . We clean our teeth , we have a shower , we water our lawn , we wash our washing , we have tea and coffee with you know , using water . We just take it for granted because it's instantaneous . But she had to go to the well and the heat of the day fill up that well . Well , because that's life . But she left it . Why ? Because she found something infinitely more important . So priority just overtook her . She had found everlasting life in Christ . So she went to those in that village , to those men , to tell them and I left my water pot 52 years ago . My water pot was not your will , but mine be done . That was my water pot . I just left it . It's no longer my life , I belong to you , and so my priorities changed and every Christian needs to leave that water pot .

Speaker 3

And this is a great picture of not underestimating the power of your testimony . Yeah , right , and this is what she's doing . Come and learn from a man who told me all that I ever did Right , and she is coming clean . This guy knows all about me and he's receiving me . He could do the same for you . This is what happened to me . Listen , all I know is this I was once blind , but now I see , and you could be forgiven as well , and you can see as well .

Speaker 2

This is a great testimony . The great commission going to all the world and preach the gospel is for every Christian , male and female .

Speaker 1

Amen , amen , we'll put Ray yeah , and you know you're right , mark the thought that she went back to all these people in the village who told me all that I've done . They're like we know what you've done . This guy knew and he talked to you and how powerful you know that she immediately began to testify . Yeah , you know right .

Speaker 2

She didn't go to a seminary . Yeah , she had a knowledge , she knew Christ .

Speaker 1

She was touched by the Savior and wanted to proclaim them to others . And so the disciples come . You know talking about what you're eating and whatnot . And then I love how it ends when it says that they then came to Christ . And it says then they said to the woman in verse 42 , now we believe , not because of what you said , for we ourselves have heard him and we know that this , indeed this , is indeed the Christ , the savior of the world . How awesome that they came themselves and they discovered for themselves , not just because of what you told us , but we have encountered him ourselves and we know that he is who you proclaimed him to be .

Speaker 2

And in verse 35 , do you not say there are still four months , and then comes harvest . Behold , I say to you , lift up your eyes and look on the fields , for they're already white to harvest . This comes on the heels of what we've just read . This woman was ready , and I had the joy of yesterday seeing a man carrying a water pot and got to share the living water with him .

Speaker 1

Really .

Speaker 2

There's the water delivery man yesterday came to the ministry carrying one of those big bottles and empty bottles and I stopped him . I didn't have my camera , my microphone , but I said you wanna come on YouTube ? He says yeah , and so I had to stand really close to him to get the sound right Cause I just used my ordinary phone . But he was ready and in fact I said what's that thing hanging around your neck ? He says it's a Bible and it was a little medallion of a Bible .

Speaker 1

Oh , are you serious ? I'm serious .

Speaker 2

I said okay , you're gonna hit me when you die ? He says , yes , sir , why ? Because I'm one of the good people . That's what he said . And I brought out the cannons and he was go , whoa , whoa , and it was just absolutely wonderful . And when we went through the Lord , he realized he was condemned . He put his hands up and said God , take me now . And it was very emotional and I ended up praying with him . So the fields are white under harvest . Just gotta go out there .

Speaker 1

Wow , ray , that's amazing . Ray doesn't go to the well , the well comes to him , like Chuck Norris . Yeah , oh , that's great , ray . Well , how encouraging

Remembering Jesus

Speaker 1

. And friends , I hope that from this your soul is stirred . First of all , remember who it is that Jesus Christ is , who he is in you , who you are in him . Remember when you were first saved , right , like what Peter says , if you lack certain virtues , it's because you've become short-sighted and you've forgotten your purification from your old sins . You forgot your redeeming moment , which means you've forgotten your redeemer . So you need to get back to remembering him , return to your first love , like Jesus said in Revelation . Let him stir your soul , awaken you again and be eternally minded so that , wherever you go , you can bring people the real , everlasting water of life , who is Jesus Christ . Amen , yeah , all right , no stupidity , I can't do that now , friends , just remember to check out all that stuff . Thank you for joining us . We'll see you here next time on the Living Waters podcast , russell .
