Authenticity Over Modern Conveniences

Speaker 1

Jesus doesn't fit into our mold , right ? You cannot have Jesus on your terms . You can only have him on his terms . And if you come to him on his terms , it's not so much that you have him but that he has you , and no one can snatch you from him . Judas betrayed the pearl of great price with 30 pieces of silver , and in so doing he bought a one-way ticket to hell . What are you willing to give in exchange for your soul ? Judas cries from the grave that it only took him 30 coins . What are you willing to give For what ? Will it profit a man if he were to gain the whole world and yet he forfeits his soul ?

Speaker 2

No TV , no computer , no smartphone , no radio , no movies , no cars . Ray Comfort , as you pet your ear , for whatever reason , what would you do ? Read books ? Go and buy a new laptop ? No , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no . No computers , no TVs . No , nothing , ray .

Speaker 3

No , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no no no no no no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no , no , no , no , no , no , no no no no , no , no no no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no .

Speaker 3

No no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no no no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no , no doors , I'd go crazy would you write your first , first book on ?

Speaker 4

was it typewriter ? Hey ? My friends or was it the old chisels ?

Speaker 1

there was a typewriter oh , thanks a lot , I thought zaskoska's being so sincere now . Ray wrote on vellum for the first book .

Speaker 4

What was it like writing a papyrus ?

Speaker 2

so , ray , um , okay , first of all . Um , why would you go to a book ? In your brain is has you become so spoiled by a computer that you couldn't go back to typewriter or write right typewriters around right by hand ?

Speaker 3

so this is what you're saying . There's all those modern things there . You have to go back .

Speaker 2

Typewriter is a lot of fun would you write a whole book by hand , right ?

Speaker 3

yeah , that's what you do when you use a typewriter Use your hands on the typewriter , use a pen and type .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I can't .

Speaker 3

I've got the scruffiest writing you've ever seen Amen . When I was about 10 years old , a teacher came alongside me , said I'm going to teach you cursive . Do you know what cursive is ?

Speaker 4

Yeah , when you write your signature , it's like an R and then someone sneezes . It's like real shit . That's exactly it .

Speaker 3

And I swim the same way . I used to go to the Olympic swimming pool and I'd dive in and my wife would go on a fits because I'd end up almost drowning by the time I got to the other end . Wait , but you surfed Same . When I dived , I'd go off the diving board . I'd think , like a I don't know , like a what would that be , the feet are dragging along the bottom of the pool my feet drag , and it's just the same with riding .

Speaker 3

I started with a good ah right , and my hand does its own thing , and I've always been like that .

Speaker 2

But , oscar , that's why he surfed , because he couldn't swim . Did you swim better back then ?

Speaker 3

No , I've always been a lousy swimmer . That's why you got so good at surfing because you didn't want to fall off I could be the fact that I lack legs , because you need legs to be able to swim .

Speaker 1

That's what it is Kirk used to rebuke you for your signature . Remember that .

Speaker 3

Oh , yes , yeah , he would take time with his and it looked great . Mine is just a mess . Look , it shows that it's authentic .

Speaker 2

It's not some machine , but Ray . Why did you never learn to properly type ? Why ?

Speaker 1

pick , pick , pick , pick , pick , pick .

Speaker 3

I didn't know I was going to write books .

Speaker 4

You peck you peck with your finger . You sound like Gollum when you did that . No , it's not just that .

Speaker 2

He pecks , he looks at the keyboard . That's the beauty of learning how to type properly . You don't have to look at the Wait , wait , didn't I try to get you to do that ? And you did a program and your fingers started hurting .

Speaker 3

Yeah , it's finger-sounding . But you see , when I was in school , I could have gone with all the girls and learned typing , but we didn't . We learned woodwork .

Speaker 2

Woodwork .

Speaker 3

Yeah , that's where we went to Woodwork they went to .

Speaker 2

I would have rather gone to typing if I knew it was going to be typed Best class I ever took in my life was keyboarding in high school and this was before we had like mass computers .

Speaker 1

I took it like sixth grade oh it was the best thing I ever did . I didn't know you knew a musical instrument .

Speaker 2

Yeah , a recorder . Keyboarding , a keyboarding , waterboarding , waterboarding I don't think it sounds that fun . Okay , but let me just say this real quick Real quick One of the worst things that has ever happened in the entire history of the universe . No , is that kids are no longer taught cursive . Cursive is the most glorious thing imaginable when it comes to writing .

Speaker 4

I don't feel like we lost anything . No , no Wait . Do you use cursive ? I know how to , but I don't use it .

Speaker 3

Oh , you're a bad

Debate on the Use of Cursive

Speaker 3

person . I'm sorry . I used the word cursive before . I'm not sure what it means . Is it when you use your whole arm to write no ?

Speaker 1

no , no . Cursive instead of the pen never comes off the .

Speaker 2

Yeah , it's a cursive writing Like when you're Well my teacher tried to teach me how do writing like you know , how , the letters on the keyboard , how it's like one letter at a time . No , cursive is when it all blends together , like how you sign your name . Yeah , you understand . No , are you serious ?

Speaker 4

cursive the day we find out . Ray comfort doesn't know cursive ray .

Speaker 2

Can you write cursive ? Do you know what it is now did ?

Speaker 3

mark tell you I couldn't do it . I can start off the first letter and then it just .

Speaker 2

I don't get why ?

Speaker 3

Why does it matter ?

Speaker 2

Are you kidding me ?

Speaker 1

Mark , do you write cursive ? No , I hate cursive .

Speaker 2

I like .

Speaker 1

My daughter , ella , writes cursive and it looks beautiful .

Speaker 2

You guys are driving me nuts Right now . That's why we have Phones and laptops .

Speaker 1

Okay , friends .

Speaker 2

Write in to Podcast at livingwaterscom and please tell me You're a cursive person .

Speaker 4

There's no chance you're going to get less than five emails .

Speaker 2

No , you're not even going to get one . I'm so shocked right now . Your cursive is terrible .

Speaker 4

Do you like cursive or do you like the idea of cursive ?

Speaker 2

That's the only way I write . Rarely do I ever just print , Listen . Cursive is so efficient , You're not constantly lifting your hand moving .

Speaker 4

So it's a matter of efficiency , not beauty . And it's beautiful too , lifting your hand moving , so it's a matter of efficiency , not beauty .

Speaker 1

Efficiency , and it's beautiful too .

Speaker 2

Yours is not , it is very efficient .

Speaker 1

I'll give you that oh come on , you guys .

Speaker 2

That's why they invented the laptop . I'm angry , mad , bitter , resentful . All right , friends , here's another one of your cool , classy comments . Speaker 4

Rachel Zwing , she also has another one called Exhausted Wives . Easy , that was good . There we go . That's a buddy , Oscar .

Speaker 2

It used to be nice having Oscar on the show . All right , friends . Time for another one of our radically revolutionary resources . It's time for another one of our radically revolutionary resources . This podcast is brought to you by how to Be Free from the Fear of Death book Ray . Why do you fear death ?

Speaker 3

I was scared to read the book I thought it would bomb . When I first did the tract I thought it would bomb . It's just too heavy to give to people and as I gave it out , I'd be like the local when I was getting gas and that I'd go up to people and they'd just snatch it up . Snatch it up because everyone thinks about that . So I wrote a book from it and the track , the little booklets , I think , heading for a million . Is it really ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's great . Yeah , well , it really helps that it also has Lynn Copeland . Did a great job . Lynn Copeland was wonderful . Yeah , wait .

Speaker 3

Lynn Copeland . Yeah she did all those little booklets , the booklets , not the book . Oh , booklets , no , this is the book .

Speaker 2

No , I'm talking about the booklet . Yeah , but we have the book . Two different products , we also have the book .

Speaker 3

But this is about the book you sound like one of my chickens ?

Speaker 4

Of course you did . How many are you ironing out ? 15 . 15 more .

Speaker 2

I'm trying to understand . On top of the 24 ? Okay , ray , isn't there a limit ? Look at how he knows .

Speaker 1

Like a little kid at Christmas time .

Speaker 3

I said to Sue we should get more chickens , because two big chickens died and they don't lay eggs when they die , so I thought we need to replace them . They don't no . So I said to Sue . I says we need to get some little chicks . She says , well , let's talk about it , let's do it in the future . She was pushing it . So I waited for a day and I went and got them . Can you bring ?

Speaker 4

me some eggs . That's the future . I'm eating like 10 , 12 eggs a day right now . You're not , I am .

Speaker 2

They say , they make you ugly Is it .

Speaker 4

You thought I was joking when I said that .

Speaker 2

You are crazy .

Speaker 4

I have 320 grams of protein a day .

Speaker 2

Is this another new one of those silly fads ?

Speaker 4

No , oh , like the steak diet you were on .

Speaker 2

That one was good one , nice one .

Speaker 3

Okay , yours is stupid Daniel's getting half of those 15 little chicks . Oh Wait , how do you get half of 15 ? Haven't you read Solomon ?

Speaker 2

Remember what Solomon said Street tacos , that's such a good catch , mark , that is so good . So , ray , what you said is completely just ridiculous , Made up . Yeah , so total lie , Complete fabrication . Oh , I tell you raising your chicks , you lied .

Speaker 3

You lame Chicks are so cute . They're being sent to us from Ohio . Oh , that's where we got our dog . It's coming through the post office On the 25th .

Speaker 4

I just imagine you getting an envelope and opening it up and a little chick pops out of it , ray .

Speaker 2

The incessant question I have for you is always why ? Why do you do the things you do ? I have for you is always why , why , ray , why , why do you do the things ?

Speaker 3

you do why ? Look , I've told you before I am normal . Everybody else is weird , you're bizarro .

Speaker 2

Look , okay , you get a chicken , nice Chicken , chicken . Okay , another chicken , right oh , chicken , chicken , chicken . Okay , like people get a dog , oh , it'd be nice to have another , another dog , maybe three dogs . Dogs don't lay eggs but you already have like 20-something chickens .

Speaker 3

Why ? Because we give the eggs to the neighbors . We throw them across the floor .

Speaker 2

Can you imagine raising eggs just so you can go egg your neighbors ?

Speaker 3

No , it's such a nice gift Eggs are so expensive . In California they're $5 to $6 a dozen at the moment . Are they really now ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , it's really crazy , ray . You never give us eggs , by the way , your own daughter . I'll toss some to you . You don't give us eggs . Shame on you . And you're never going to give Oscar , who abuses eggs 12 eggs a day .

Speaker 4

I enjoy them , do you ?

Speaker 3

eat the shells , that's egg abuse no .

Speaker 2

There's a lot of protein in the shells , that's right .

Speaker 3

All right , because eating egg shells is probably a cure to some terrible disease . No one's even tried .

Speaker 2

I'll give it a shot . Do it , Ray , Do it All . Right , friends . So yeah , don't forget the how to Be Free from the Fear of Death book , the Living Waters M-U-G , Because I'm tired of saying mug and evidence , study Bible , all that Living Waters .

Speaker 3

You are in the middle of mug , isn't that interesting , oh that's true , I like it , I like it , I like it .

Speaker 2

Okay , today Ooh , that had a nice sound , no , there you go .

Speaker 4

You don't ever have to do that one again , honestly , listen one more time .

Speaker 2

All right , nope , it's not good . No , okay , I like it . I like

The Haunting Legacy of Judas

Speaker 2

it , okay . Today we are talking about lessons from the life of Judas , our hero . Can you guys guess how we say our hero ?

Speaker 3

Our hero .

Speaker 2

That'd be an interesting she-shirt She-shirt .

Speaker 4

She-shirt . She-shirt Females only . She-shirt .

Speaker 2

Females only . Judas , our hero . I'm sure it's out there . Can you guys guess how you would say Judas in Arabic ? Judas , Judas . Wait , why do you do a mean voice for Arabs Ray ?

Speaker 3

What Judas ?

Speaker 1

This comes naturally . Why Ray Achtung ?

Speaker 2

I said well , take a guess . How would you say Mark ? If you were an Arab , how would you say Judas ?

Speaker 3

Oh , I got it .

Speaker 2

Yudah .

Speaker 1

I'd probably remove the .

Speaker 2

S , would you ? Yeah , what about you ? Oscar ? Hot dog , hot dog .

Speaker 1

Hot dog , I'm freaking .

Speaker 2

Ray , you got the closest , but you do keep the S Listen Yudas . Yudas got the closest , but you do keep the s listen you das , you das , you das . Yeah , that's how I grew up knowing about judas . In fact , there was a relative of mine .

Speaker 1

What do you mean ? That's how you grew up . Were you always called ? Well , I just know we had a .

Speaker 2

There was a relative of ours . My grandma always called you das really oh wow , you das hey , how old were you when you realized it was you grandma , grandma , uh , but boy judas , judas , uh , man , he is an interesting guy .

Speaker 3

So you , you had a catholic family , so that meant something calling a relative jew yeah wasn't ignorant .

Speaker 1

That's how you'd say it judas was a wee little man was .

Speaker 3

No , a wee little man Was he no , no , oh no .

Speaker 2

Yeah , but , yeah , but can you imagine , though I mean naming your son Judas , mm-hmm , yeah , meet my son Judas and my other son , hitler .

Speaker 3

No , adolf , adolf , Adolf , oh , and here are my daughters Jezebel and Potiphar's wife .

Speaker 1

No , potiphar's , this is part of her . Have you ever met a Judas ?

Speaker 2

I have not .

Speaker 3

Judah no .

Speaker 2

I wouldn't even name my child Judah because it's so close to .

Speaker 3

Judah , the beginning of one of my books . I spend quite a few pages talking about that how no one would call a kid even atheists won't call a kid Judas .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , it's really interesting and the thought of that . You know , there was a real man named Judas and there was a time and an era in history where he was living , walking the earth , functioning , making decisions on Christ and these different things that he was doing . And I think this is a fitting place to start Luke 6 , 16 , and its description of Judas . This was listing the apostles Judas , the son of James , and Judas Iscariot , who also became a traitor .

Speaker 3

How'd you like that with your name in the world's biggest selling book of all time ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , judas the traitor . Now , Ray , years ago we did an episode and we talked about Judas . I think I was in that one . I wasn't Judas , but I think I talked about it and you know , judas has become synonymous with being a traitor , with being just a dirty rat .

Speaker 3

It says in the book of Proverbs that an evil man's name will stink . I can't remember exactly how it goes .

Speaker 2

That's a re-comfort version .

Speaker 3

Yeah , something like that , and it really is true that it's carried a reproach with it right down through the years . Yeah , judas .

Speaker 2

Iscariot , judas Iscariot . Yeah , it really has , and I think that all of us , as Christians , have at some point or another .

Speaker 3

I know .

Speaker 2

I have , where you're just seeing your sinfulness , you're getting a peek into your heart and your cry is Lord , please don't let me be a Judas , Please don't let me be a Judas . And I think the enigma associated with Judas was that he was not suspected , and we can tell that from accounts we're going to get into .

Speaker 3

I said please Lord , let me be a Goliath .

Speaker 2

No .

Speaker 3

Well , we know the answer to that prayer .

Speaker 4

No , well , we know the answer to that prayer . No , yeah , you bring up a good point . Because Judas ?

Speaker 4

I think the thing that's most haunting about the idea of Judas is that he was considered one of the 12 . He was there for the Sermon on the Mount . He heard all the things that Christ had preached . Wow , he had witnessed all the things that Christ had preached . He had witnessed all of the miracles Christ had done . Lazarus he had witnessed Lazarus . Not only that , but in the scriptures it says that Jesus gave the 12 power and authority , so he himself was a part of healing the sick . That's the thing to me that's most haunting about the story of Judas is that Judas was like the kid that grew up in the home , a Christian home , the kid that served in ministry , the kid that knew all the Bible verses , the kid that went to a Christian college . You know , that's kind of contextually , that's the kind of person we're talking about . So , yeah , judas , I think his life leading up to the kiss that betrayed his savior , our savior , is the life that he lived , wow .

Speaker 3

I think it's one of the most telling portions , where the woman with the alabaster box broke the alabaster box .

Speaker 2

Ray , can you pause there , because that was the next one I was going to read . How dare you .

Speaker 3

What I was just thinking of doing is just having a pause .

Speaker 2

Yeah , just pause , ray , because I want you to to comment on it . But let me read it so we get content . John 12 , 3 through 6 um , ray , ray , go sit in the corner again . Take your dunce hat with you . Then mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard , anointed the feet of jesus and wiped his feet with her hair , and the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil . But one of his disciples , judas Iscariot , simon's son , who would betray him , said why was this fragrant oil not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor ? This , he said , not that he cared for the poor , but because he was a thief and had the money box and he used to take what was put in it . Oh , wow . So go ahead , ray .

Speaker 3

Judas was a thief and he had the money box and he used to take what was in it . But yeah , he complained . He said why was this extravagance done ? I mean he was saying this is just Jesus . What are you getting carried away for ? He's not worth 300 . He's worth about 30 pieces of silver . Wow , ray , I seriously got hardcore chills right now at that , because he never knew who Jesus was .

Speaker 3

He never saw him as the Son of God , god manifest in the flesh . I mean , how could he miss ? And yet we have multitudes in churches throughout the world that hear the words of Jesus read to them and they have no idea who he is . Wow , in fact , I had three . One of them was an atheist and I thought I'm going to play Jeopardy with these guys . So I says , you guys play Jeopardy ? And they said , yeah , yeah , I used to play it , I really enjoyed it . I says , okay , we're playing Jeopardy and today's subject is the Bible .

Speaker 2

And they went . Whoa , you sound like me now , ray , I do .

Speaker 3

The Bible , oh dear . Anyway , I says okay , number one , who was Goliath ? And the guy who knew who Goliath was , who was Jesus ? This guy says yeah , he was the son of God . I said you believe that . He says if I believed the whole thing , I'd believe that .

Speaker 2

That's a good idea .

Speaker 3

And then I said , who was Mary ? To this other guy and it was great for them to give me the knowledge , the way to heaven , what's the bible says we're ?

Speaker 2

having jeopardy . That's all we're doing . That is so good , right , it's a great thing to do . Wow , yeah , mark , you know I want you to touch on this . Um , he , it's . I love what it says , not that he cared for the poor , but he was a thief , right , and I often think of first corinthians 13 , you know , and it talks about all the things that we can do for people , um , and spiritually , as it relates to god , that we can do for people , and spiritually as it relates to God , right , we can speak with the tongues of men and of angels , yet have not love . We can sell all of our goods , we can give our , you know , to take care of the poor , we can give our bodies to be burned , and yet it says we can still not have love . And I've often said that what love truly is is not just the actions found in 1 Corinthians 13 , but it's genuine care toward the supposed object of your love . You truly care about their welfare , you care about the glory of God , you care about the welfare of other people .

Speaker 1

Yeah , he was a hypocrite . Our love must be with sincerity . I love that I have a message that was stirred on from Ray's message True and False Conversion and this message is all about hypocrisy and what genuine love looks like . And allow me to tell you a little portion of my message that I had put together and it deals with . No one likes a hypocrite , right . But Jesus never said to follow my people , he said to follow me . Remember , jesus didn't like hypocrites either . In fact , hypocrites put him to death , right . So because of this , the Bible must be our absolute authority , with Christ being our sovereign Savior .

Speaker 1

The Bible is brutally honest with all of its characters , and Judas is , first and foremost , at the top of that list . Judas he died thirsty next to the well of salvation . There's no greater tragedy than to be almost saved , because to be almost saved is to be entirely lost . In John 10 , jesus said I am the door . If anyone enters by me , he will be saved . Judas kissed the door , but he never entered into that and in so doing , judas was left unhinged . There's the door . The dad joke that's good .

Speaker 1

That's good .

Speaker 1

I got a handle on it , judas was at the side of Christ , but he was never on Christ's side . Judas sinned against the light so much that only darkness was left . Judas betrayed Jesus because Jesus betrayed Judas's expectations of what he wanted . Wow , jesus doesn't fit into our mold , right ? You cannot have Jesus on your terms . You can only have him on his terms . And if you come to him on his terms , it's not so much that you have him , but that he has you , and no one can snatch you from him .

Speaker 1

Judas betrayed the pearl of great price with 30 pieces of silver , and in so doing he bought a one-way ticket to hell . What are you willing to give in exchange for your soul ? Judas cries from the grave that it only took him 30 coins . What are you willing to give in exchange for your soul ? Judas cries from the grave that it only took him 30 coins . What are you willing to give For what will it profit a man if he were to gain the whole world , and yet he forfeits his soul ? And at this portion I just I beg people to come to their senses . You know , I was at a church in .

Speaker 1

Texas , mark , did you write those ? Yeah , man , those are really good . I was at a church in Texas and when I was done preaching a message , a deacon had come up to me and he said from what you're saying , it sounds as if I'm not saved , no . And I said well , are you ? And he says well , it doesn't sound like him after listening to what you're saying . And I went through this little list here and the senior pastor stood between me and this deacon and he said oh , earl , you've been faithfully attending and serving this church for 20 years . If anybody's saved , you're saved . I stood between the senior pastor in my honorarium and the individual .

Speaker 1

And I said listen it's better to examine yourself and to challenge yourself now than on that day when you hear those fearful , frightful , fateful wordsateful words depart from me . Work of iniquity . I never knew you . It sounds to me like you just need to go get alone with the Lord and to cry out before him and to pour your heart out before God and just come clean . Let him search you and try you and see if there'd be any wicked way in you . And then you turn to the pastor . I turned to the pastor and I slapped him across the face .

Speaker 2

Wow , mark , along with you never being invited to that church again . What a courageous thing to do and what a right thing to do . And I think the sad thing is that that's what's lacking today is we're not willing to do what Scripture alludes to in that , you know , he who rebukes a man will afterward find more favor than he who flatters with the tongue . Faithful are the wounds of a friend , and that guy on the other side of salvation , if he wasn't saved , will be so grateful for you and if he discovers he was saved , he'll be grateful for you because you helped him to come to that . You know confirmation , but I think that's so important to do , and I love what you said in terms of you know Judas's , but I think that's so important to do , and I love what you said in terms of Judas' hypocrisy and our love needing to be without hypocrisy , and scripture said that let love be without hypocrisy . Abhor what is evil , cling to what is good , and that's the thing . Right Is Judas cared for himself . That's the epitome of being a traitor . It's again yourself . It's all about you , your desires , your wants .

Speaker 2

And I love what you said about the whole expectations thing . He had a set of expectations . Obviously , jesus wasn't meeting them . Maybe he wanted wealth and power and he wasn't getting that in the way he wanted . So okay , so we'll move on here with looking at some more texts regarding Judas John 6 , 70 to 71, . Jesus answered them did I not choose you , the twelve , and one of you is a devil ? He spoke of Judas Iscariot , the son of Simon , for it was he who would betray him being one of the twelve Oscar . That's a pointed statement there , and yet I mean think of the significance of that Jesus chose Judas and he knew Judas was a devil .

Speaker 4

How do you reconcile that ? Well , I think

Judas Betrays Jesus With a Kiss

Speaker 4

it's . Jesus chooses Judas to follow him , but he doesn't choose Judas in a salvific way , in the same way that there are many who are members of our church but they are not members of the body of Christ right Eternally . This is actually a gift . This is a gift that God gives to us that we might be amongst both believers and non-believers , because it's ultimately God's patience towards those people to repent and believe . But here's the problem is that when you are face to face with Christ , the living God , the sovereign God , the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords , when you see his glory , you'll either love his glory or you'll hate his glory . And so Judas was exposed to the glory of God and he despised it . And man , that should be a warning to us all like expose yourselves to the glory of God and man , by the grace of God , you will love the glory of God .

Speaker 2

Amen , ray , would you say . This is a wheat , a tear among wheats , with Judas this is a tear amongst wheats .

Speaker 3

No , he can't .

Speaker 1

Why did you want me to say ?

Speaker 3

that no , he can say it well , yeah , good job . Thank you .

Speaker 2

Every time you do that , ray , from now on , you're going to get a . Oh no , I stop , I repent .

Speaker 3

Yes , I think if we want to play the hypocrite like Judas , god will give us enough rope to hang ourselves . Ooh , come on , come on . It really shows God's kindness in giving us a free will . He didn't override Judas' will . If you wanted 30 pieces of silver , you go and get it . You take the consequences . That's crazy .

Speaker 2

Yeah . So let's go on to Matthew 26 , 19 to 25 . So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and they prepared the Passover . When evening had come , he sat down with the 12 . Now , as they were eating , he said assuredly , I say to you , one of you will betray me . And they were exceedingly sorrowful and each of them began to say to him Lord , is it I ? He answered and said he who dipped his hand with me in the dish will betray me . The son of man indeed goes , just as it is written of him . But woe to that man by whom the son of man is betrayed . It would have been good for that man if he had not been born . Then Judas , who was betraying him , answered and said Rabbi , is it I ? He said to him you have said it . Wow , is it I ? He said to him you have said it . Wow , I mean Mark , just to think about that . And we have to remember . This is verses 19 to 25 .

Speaker 2

Before this happened , verses 14 to 16 , it says then one of the 12 , judas , iscariot , went to the chief priest and said what are you willing to give me if I deliver him to you ? And they counted out to him 30 pieces of silver . So from that time he saw opportunity to betray him . I mean , I imagine what was going on through Judas's mind , right . I mean it's almost like the person who did something that was wrong . Like they stole something at work and then they're having an employee meeting and the boss is like someone's been stealing around here , right , and they know it's them . They just did it and the sweat starts pouring . What do you think was happening right there ?

Speaker 1

with you . Okay , well , let's take it a step further . You know , I read the last three chapters of Luke today in my devotions and I read the portion about Judas betraying Jesus and it says that before that betrayal took place , it says that Satan entered Judas . Jesus knew that . Fast forward to the garden where Jesus is betrayed by Judas and he betrays him with a kiss .

Speaker 1

Right , it's been said , that's not what lips were designed for betrayal Jesus kissing Judas as a sign of endearment . You know , friend , why have you come that Jesus , even knowing what was happening to Judas , was still calling him to repentance , still calling him with the ability to change right change . Look what you're doing , judas . And he kisses him on the cheek , knowing that Satan has filled him at this time . He could have not done that . He could have when Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss sorry , I had it twisted . It's not what lips were designed for , it's not the direction for which heaven , but Jesus received that term of endearment when he could have , at that point , cut off his ear instead of Peter cutting off Malchus' ear . Right , yeah , yeah , listen , love is preeminent and Jesus obviously rose to a place that we will never be able to understand this side of heaven . What love truly is that agape , unconditional , sacrificial love ?

Speaker 2

yeah , yeah and and ray the deception that that is evident there and that judas obviously the disciples weren't pointing at judas and saying , oh , obviously judas , the guy with big eyeballs yeah , sounds like the big ears and the pitch nose you're stealing what I was just going to say . Oscar looked over at me .

Speaker 3

This is what I was . Say it , ray . Say it . I was going to say that Shaw teaches us that God sees the heart . Man looks on the outward . And they looked on the outward and saw Judas . And when Jesus said , why don't you betray me ? They didn't say , oh , that's all out to betray Jesus . They thought he had gone to give money to the poor . He was such a good guy , probably really handsome , whatever but he was an award-winning actor , an Oscar-winning , sorry , the first Oscar . Yeah , oscar , he fooled the disciples but ultimately he fooled himself . And that's what sin does , wow , it betrays us , Oscar .

Speaker 2

when I said large eyeballs , why did you look at me ?

Speaker 4

Are we going to get into the moment in the garden ? Yes , we're getting there In a moment , in a moment , in a moment .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so , but you know , it's interesting because all the disciples started to ask is it I , is it I , is it I ? I like the fact that it singles out Judas , obviously because Jesus was going to give the revelation . But I wonder if he just said is it I ?

Speaker 3

so that he would blend in and not be the only one to just be sitting there quietly . Wouldn't that be funny ? One disciple doesn't say is it I why ? Didn't you say is it I Right ?

Speaker 2

You have said it , wow , and I mean . But it seems like there were times again the disciples and the other accounts kind of give different perspectives on this , but they weren't clued in . I mean , if he said you have said it , you would think they would jump on Judas , tie him down , beat him up .

Speaker 3

But didn't the sob and the dish have great connotations of companionship and love and friendship you would hips in the bowl with me .

Speaker 2

Yeah , oh man , yeah , and , and I love you know , in that , in that scene , um , you know , yeah , anyway , we'll move on . What were you saying ? Were you saying that I was asking about the garden ? Yeah , yeah , we'll get there , okay . Now Matthew 26 , 19 to 25 .

Speaker 2

It says so the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and they prepared the Passover . When evening had come , he sat down with the twelve . Now , as they were eating , he said Assuredly I say to you , one of you will betray me . No wait , that's the one I just did .

Speaker 1

That's all right .

Speaker 2

Awkward 26 . Awkward Wheezy .

Speaker 3

We had an awkward moment , didn't we ? Those people from Australia ? They came to visit us and they left Remember that and you started waving and they were in the parking lot and I waved to some new visitors and they thought I was waving to them and they came back .

Speaker 2

They came back .

Speaker 3

And one of the guys says awkward yeah .

Speaker 2

And again Ray , only you , and my question remains why , yeah , matthew 26 , 47 to 50 . And while he was still speaking , behold Judas , one of the 12 , with a great multitude with swords and clubs , came from the chief priests and elders of the people . Now , his betrayer had given them a sign saying whomever I kiss , he is the one . Seize him Immediately . He went up to Jesus and said Greetings , rabbi . And kissed him , but Jesus said to him Friend , why have you come ? Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took him .

Speaker 1

Yeah , look , it's not . Why did you come ? As if Jesus didn't have an answer for that . It's much in the same way with Adam and Eve in the garden . When God said , you know where are you , it wasn't because he didn't know where they're at . It was like look where you're at , you know so it's . Hey . Why have you come , like examine your motives ? Why are you doing what you're doing right now ?

Speaker 3

Judas Was Judas expecting a big battle .

Speaker 4

Yes , because actually another version . It says why do you come with the sword ? And that I love . One of the commentaries that I read on that a few years ago talked about the fact that Jesus's point was that have you misunderstood me ? Because maybe Judas thought like oh well , the kingdom of God is going to come through power , it's going to come through strength , it's going to come through the sword .

Speaker 4

If we're going to go take over Jesus we need to go with the sword because he's going to fight . And so when Jesus says , why do you come with the sword ? It's like have you not understood me ? My kingdom is not going to come through power but through weakness . My kingdom is not going to come through the sword but through the shedding of blood , and I love that you brought up earlier , mark , that it says that Satan entered him .

Speaker 4

Isn't that interesting ? Because you've got this long series of events all throughout scriptures that start in the Old Testament and you almost have , like this story that is not complete . In the garden you've got Satan with Adam and Adam is standing before a tree and God is saying if you obey me , you will be blessed . And now Jesus is standing in a garden and there's Satan . He entered Judas , but God says the father says to Jesus if you obey me , you will be crushed , but they will go free . Wow , isn't that amazing ? It's like this completion of the story of the gospel in which Jesus is the better Adam Through his obedience , he is crushed so that we might be blessed .

Speaker 2

Oh , that's so heavy . And , yeah , you think about that moment in the garden , as Jesus was there and the disciples couldn't even stay awake trying to pray . You think of the turmoil , right ? I mean , he's sweating , as it were , great drops of blood and then , to add insult to injury , shedding , as it were , great drops of blood and then , to add insult to injury , this man that he unconditionally poured his life into . He knew the whole while who Judas was . He knew the whole while what Judas was gonna do . And having poured into him , having loved him , having eaten with him , now , that insult to injury , he's betraying him with a kiss and calling him rabbi . And the hypocrisy hail rabbi For 30 pieces of silver Ray . The way you put it earlier was so profound in terms of the worthlessness of Jesus to Judas .

Speaker 2

the worthlessness of Jesus to Judas .

Speaker 3

And think what he is to us . He is our life . Christ in you , the hope of glory . He's my hope . In my death , he's the very source of life itself . There's nothing on this earth you can give in exchange for what we have in Christ .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I've mentioned before how a friend of mine and I , when I was a newer believer , we would hang out in fellowship and I don't know why we would do this , but we'd go . Hey , man , can you imagine if someone offered you a truck full of cash , like one of those big U-Haul trucks Diamonds , yeah , diamonds , gold . Just all you had to do was deny Jesus Right and we would literally start cracking up laughing with all that there was within us at the thought of that , because of how unthinkable it was to us .

Speaker 2

You give me dirt for my paper .

Speaker 3

Even if it was cereal ? No , you wouldn't do it even for cereal , ray . A truck full of chickens .

Speaker 2

Wow , a truck full of chickens , yeah , and you can understand why Paul said he counts all things as rubbish . Rubbish , you know , compared to knowing Jesus , you know . Once you've tasted of him , you understand , you know . And hence what happened next Matthew 27 , 3 through 10, . Then Judas , his betrayer , seeing that he had been condemned , was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders , saying I have sinned by betraying innocent blood . And they said what is that to us ? You see to it .

Speaker 3

That is so powerful , isn't it ? And that's how Satan works . I don't care about you . I used you as a puppet , Richard Dawkins . I used you as a puppet to deceive many , and I don't care about you at all .

Speaker 2

Mark , that moment of emptiness that Judas must have felt . You know he got his little 30 pieces of silver . He's trying to give them back . We don't want it . That's on you . What's it have to do with us ? I would call that the epitome of remorse .

Speaker 1

When you can't reverse it . Yeah , worldly remorse for sure . Boy , you think of all the things , all the videos that you want to rent once you get up to heaven . You know Jonah in the belly of the well and you think of Peter walking on water . Hey , let's rewind that . I want to watch that , but you know Jesus being betrayed by Judas . You know it's not one that I want to watch . Yeah , it would have been better if he was never born at all . There's a good clue that he's not on his way to heaven .

Avoiding Hypocrisy Through Genuine Repentance

Speaker 1

I can't imagine .

Speaker 1

But as we're just going through this podcast here , I'm just taking inventory , just saying Lord , search me and try me , see if there'll be any wicked way in me , lead me in the way everlasting . The last thing you call me many things . Don't call me a hypocrite . I don't want to be found in that category in any way , shape or form . And obviously we do things that we shouldn't do and our feet get dirty , we walk down paths that we shouldn't walk or we taste vile things that we shouldn't taste from time to time . And Christ is there to clean us up , to wipe us off , to get us on a straight and narrow , and that doesn't mean you're a hypocrite . It just means you're growing . It means you're growing and you're going and you want God to search you .

Speaker 1

I mean , who can listen to this message here and not want to take inventory ? You said it on our previous podcast when we hear about somebody falling into sexual sin , like a pastor , we're not pointing a finger at that person saying how could you do that ? I could never do that . Take heed lest you fall . I'm like , oh Lord , have mercy on me . I don't want to defame your name . You know it's the last thing I want . Take me before I ever come into the place of adultery or doing something that is absolutely horrific , that's going to cause shame to your name , or mar what you've done in my life with my family and everything else you know you're not identified as a hypocrite because you've sinned .

Speaker 2

You're identified as a hypocrite because you've sinned and have failed to appropriate God's means to overcome hypocrisy , which is repentance . That's hypocrisy because God has given us a means to overcome hypocrisy , and it's called repentance . But when you sin and don't repent , using God's means of integrity to deal with hypocrisy , then you are a hypocrite , and so it's so important to do that . A hypocrite is the kind of person who knows what they're doing . They do it intentionally , and they don't care , and they pretend as if , though , they're the kind of person who doesn't or wouldn't do that , and so that's huge , and so it says right . They said to him , after he tried to give him the silver back what is that to us ? You see to it ? Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed and went and hanged himself , man Oscar .

Speaker 2

that is really , at the end of the day , the futility of a life that does not take God's pathway and that goes according to its own wisdom and its own dictates and is led by its own fleshly desires .

Speaker 4

Yeah , and it's interesting because you kind of pointed it out already which is someone might say well , why , like ? How did that ? How was that the end result ? Didn't he repent ? No , it says that he was remorseful . That is not repentance .

Speaker 4

Repentance and remorseful are two very different things . It seems to be thatance and remorseful are two very different things . It seems to be that Judas was remorseful over realizing that he was in danger , in danger of the wrath of God . But repentance is not Once you understand the gospel . The gospel is not just a get out of jail free card . If the only reason why you repent we talked about earlier , like the Judas , is the kid that grew up in the Christian home , that went to a Christian college , that served at the church , if the religious things that you do , if the moral things that you do , is simply a way for you to get a get out of hell free card , that is not repentance and that is not worship . Worship is adoring God , it's adoring your Savior , it's affectionate obedience to the one who was obedient to the cross for you . So it seems as though Judas is still just trying to look out for number one . Judas is still just trying to look out for number one , and number one has hung himself . Yeah .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and you know , and again , you know we've talked a lot about suicide and it's very , very serious . And you know we've all known someone who has committed suicide . You know even some of us at this table , family members that have committed suicide . My uncle committed suicide when I was just a young boy . I was named after him . In fact you know Emil and you know suicide at the end of the day is and again there are so many elements . There's a deception that Satan is the deceiver . I think he deceives people into that , but I think it's a lack of realization of the hope that there is in the Lord and what the cross meant and how there can be forgiveness , there can be redemption . You know , and it just absolutely breaks my heart , that Satan is such a deceiver that he keeps blinding people . I mean he deceived Judas into betraying Christ and then he deceived Judas into not repenting , and that's often his game .

Speaker 3

We have multitudes and pulpits who have a form of godliness and nothing but air ticklers , who speak of a God of love and mercy without being true and faithful and talking of his justice and truth and righteousness , not preaching sin , righteousness and judgment . They are betraying the Son of God with a kiss .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's so true , and the day of judgment is going to reveal all of that . And yet , friends , if you're listening and right now you're realizing maybe you're a pastor , maybe you're someone who's been tickling people's ears , maybe it's all been about the gain for you . Repent , don't be a fool like Judas . You know there are a lot of pastors that have committed suicide and I think , again , it's because they're blind to the gospel and the hope that's in the gospel . And a lot of it deals with reputation . How can I ever now show my face ? Look at what I've done . Look at the adultery I've committed . Look at the embezzlement through the church funds . Look at—forget your reputation , forget what people think of you . Recognize that you need genuine repentance . You need God's forgiveness . There are pastors that have recognized they weren't even saved . Maybe that's you .

Speaker 2

Turn to the Lord and then believers that have been struggling with hypocrisy turn to the Lord . You know how many wonderful , glorious stories there are of people who had been in radical sin , radical hypocrisy , and they were awakened to it and then they turned to the Lord . He set them free , he changed their trajectory and then he used them to minister to others . There's hope for you , please . He's the father of the prodigal . Turn to him , let him clean you up and don't go in the way of Judas . All right ? Well , there you have it , friends . No messing around today . You know what I talked about at the beginning . Check it out . Podcastlivingwaterscom . We'll see you here next time on the Living Waters Podcast .
