I used to say right in the middle of the sermon I thank God for saving me at a young age , when I was 22 . And I'd say I thank God he didn't wait till I was 98 , where I would say , oh God , please use me , and I'd fall backwards behind the pulpit and disappear and everyone thought it was greatly funny . And I thought it was funny and it was just carried on . Someone wrote to me after that sermon and said I love your ministry , but why do you mock the elderly ? And I've never forgotten that was like a dagger going into my heart . I'm not exaggerating , it just brings me to tears . I wept the other day just thinking of him .
Ray ComfortThis was like 45 years ago or something like that , and so it's very important to be very careful that we don't mock the elderly and we just realize that every elderly person is an Oscar and easy a mark and old skin .
Emeal ZwayneHey McFly , Name that movie .
Mark SpenceBack to the Future .
Emeal ZwayneBut my lips hurt real bad .
Mark SpenceNapoleon Domenech .
Emeal ZwayneOkay , campers , rise and shine , and don't forget your booties , because it's cold out there .
Ray ComfortI know this one being her no .
Emeal ZwayneWhat's funny ? What's funny ? What's funny is of all of them , Mark . You should know this one because it was repeated again and again , and again .
Mark SpenceOh , groundhog , day .
Emeal ZwayneYeah .
Ray ComfortThere you go , mark . Now these are bad movies , some of them .
Emeal ZwayneLiving Waters does not endorse or encourage the viewing of these movies nor is Living Waters or its distributors responsible for the contents of said movies or any movies in the entire universe , except for Living Waters movies . Viewer discretion is advised . Wow , did you read ?
Oscar Navarrothat .
Ray ComfortI did . You were predicting that I would jump in and say that , weren't you ?
Emeal ZwayneExactly , Ray Cover .
Ray ComfortBecause I try to watch Groundhog without you know the cleaning thing .
Emeal ZwayneI know you're every movie and you can't every movie and you can't yeah , yeah , yeah , vid Angel , or what's the other one , mark , reading a book Clearplay , what Clearplay , clearplay .
Ray ComfortYeah , those will help you with any movie like that Trouble is with those where they take all the cussing out . The box that I get the cussing in has to be emptied somewhere .
Emeal ZwayneThe cussing box that receives all the cussing . Why is that word ? It's such a nasty word , cuss .
Ray ComfortI think it's the connotation that comes with it .
Emeal ZwayneWait , isn't there something to say ? I've heard it used as a you little cuss . That's not a bad word is it ?
Ray ComfortNo , but it just means . I think it means naughty kid , probably down south . I thought that was my name growing up . Y'all , I thought that was my name growing up , y'all . No , I thought it was your name .
Emeal ZwayneAll right , but here's the one question I have for y'all what do these three movies have in common ?
Oscar NavarroWhat are the movies ? Again , back to the Future , ben-hur Napoleon .
Emeal ZwayneDynamite and Napoleon Dynamite . Oh Ben-Hur , they were all produced Back to the Future . Napoleon Dynamite and Groundhog Day .
Oscar NavarroThey're all feature films .
Emeal ZwayneNo idea .
Oscar NavarroThey all are at least an hour and a half long . They all deal with time travel , napoleon Dynamite yeah , remember , oh , the time machine , the time machine I got you .
Emeal ZwayneUncle Rico . Yeah , so , guys , I was thinking about this . And if you could travel to any non-biblical era , because you guys are so spiritual .
Ray ComfortOh , stop it . You guys are so spiritual , there's nothing out there .
Emeal ZwayneSo spiritual I knew you'd say something biblical . But if you could travel to any non-biblical era in history , can ?
Oscar Navarroit be in the future .
Emeal ZwayneNo , no , it's got to be the past . Where would it be in the future ?
Ray ComfortNo , no , it's got to be the past
. Where would it be ? The discovery of chocolate ?
Emeal ZwayneWilly Wonka . You know what's funny ? I saw a documentary on that and I mean chocolate goes a while back , but it was not what it is today . No , it was bitter , but it's been improved . They put chocolate with it . I just bought Rachel Chocolate . I just bought Rachel . I just bought Rachel . You hear that Easy . They put what Chocolate with it . That's what made it good . Oh boy man , I seriously have been a chocoholic since I was a little boy . Same here , guys . No , there was a first time we tasted the glories of chocolate . Yeah , like . My daughter Summer will record her boys . You know , every time they'll eat something for the first time . Did they ever do that with you guys ? Like the lemon ? Like , did you do that with your kids , mark ? No , they didn't have lemons the first time . They bit into a lemon , the face contorts and does all this stuff . But I just bought Rachel a . I did it with my dog . No , did you really ?
Ray ComfortLucy Lemon , I did it with my dog . Yeah , they did it with your dog . So they go , mmm their teeth .
Emeal ZwayneDo that again right , mmm .
Ray ComfortThey show all their teeth at once , like what are you trying to do ? I want to try that .
Mark SpenceThey keep taking it . Throw little pieces of lemon to your dog to catch . They just keep catching it . They keep doing it .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , they keep doing it , the peanut butter thing .
Mark SpenceOh , that's fun . Peanut butter on lemon .
Ray ComfortNo , you put the peanut butter on your finger and put it on the top of their mouth . And they keep licking or they keep talking to you for the next five minutes . Hey how you doing .
Emeal ZwayneThey must have used that in movies , right when they're trying to make dogs act like they're dogs . Mr Ed so do you guys , only for fun .
Ray ComfortYeah , but I just got no . Dogs were damaged In the making of this program I love dogs .
Emeal ZwayneBut Wet more ?
Ray ComfortNo , don't even , no , no , this is not Thailand , you carry on easy . So .
Emeal ZwayneThe what was I going to say ? Your memory improving A little . Oh , I just got Rachel A two pound Box of Seas Candies Chocolates For her birthday .
Ray ComfortThey need to change the name to S-E-I-Z-E . Seize , seize the candy .
Emeal ZwayneThe danger is there's one right by my house now .
Mark SpenceMark , it's near our home . We have friends that work there .
Emeal ZwayneWe can literally walk there .
Ray ComfortThey're owned by Weight Watchers .
Emeal ZwayneThe guy who owns a window company goes around breaking everyone's windows in the neighborhood . I've often thought about graffitis . Like the guy who owns a window company goes around breaking everyone's windows in the neighborhood During the night .
Ray ComfortBut you know I've often thought about graffitis . The guys that clean graffiti in the night . They go out with their paint cans , that's what they do at night .
Emeal ZwayneNo , but I popped in one of those and I end up eating most of the whole box . What about the candy I get for Rachel ? Yeah , and the chocolates too , but I popped in one the other day and it was like a moment of worship , not of the candy , but of the Lord to give us taste buds and to give us this substance .
Ray ComfortIsn't there 10,000 taste buds on your tongue ? Running around or doing a ?
Emeal Zwaynedisco . Seriously , imagine not being able to taste anything , but don't tell me that any of you here do not like chocolate , please .
Mark SpenceLove chocolate . Not a fan of Seas chocolate .
Ray ComfortYeah , I don't like Seas . It's a lawsuit .
Mark SpenceListen , the best chocolate is from like Germany or Switzerland , sorry , you have to go to Europe .
Emeal ZwayneI've been to Europe . I've tried their chocolate . Nothing compares to See's . See's is mostly sugar and milk . That's why you like it . This is coming from guys that eat Wienerschnitzel . I don't need to hear advice from you .
Mark SpenceThere is nobody in the world that's going to agree with you , unless they work for See's Candy . They're wrong . No , the best chocolate is from Europe . I agree , new Zealand has absolutely the best chocolate . I mean , I love it .
Emeal ZwayneNew Zealand . They don't even make their own chocolate .
Mark SpenceWere you raised budding to say something .
Ray ComfortHave I ever told you about my buddy friend who had no taste buds ? He wasn't born without taste buds , he just couldn't taste things because he had such sinus problems ? Never told you about Dudley Scantlebury ? I've heard his name . Let me tell you
the story . Dudley Scantlebury was a radio announcer , national radio announcer , and his accent was just like his name , Dudley Scantaburray . He spoke very eloquently and he had me on his program once and he had problems with his sinuses . He couldn't hardly even smell or taste . And so he had me in a studio and he said you know what a kill switch is ? Yeah , you stop the sound on a radio program .
Emeal ZwayneYeah .
Ray ComfortHe said Ray Comfort , great to have you on the program today . As he pushed the kill switch , this is good to have you here . The audience didn't hear the and I fell off the chair . Seriously he would constantly do that . Yeah , but not on air .
Oscar NavarroHe'd kill it on the kill switch .
Ray ComfortAnd Sue said oh , I heard the interview . What was all that grunting ? In there and it was me on the floor in the studio because I literally fell off the stool because I couldn't believe what happened .
Emeal ZwayneHow did the guy respond to you ? Mocking him like that .
Ray ComfortNo , I didn't mock him . It was just a joy to hear him do that . That's what they all say .
Emeal ZwayneAll right friends , time for a cool , classy comment . This came in as a letter , believe it or not , in the mail . My name is Matthew and I've been a pastor at a small church in Virginia for about 10 years now . I just went through one of the most difficult times of my life . Near the end of the year , I found myself struggling with rising anxiety . It became worse and worse until I woke up one morning early in January and had only what I can describe as a complete nervous breakdown . I couldn't function , eat , eat or sleep for three days . A major part of what was causing my anxiety were doubts of the Bible and Christ flooding my mind . Every morning my mind was filled with new reasons . God's word couldn't possibly be true . I felt like I was losing my mind , my faith and my ability to continue on .
Emeal ZwayneGod brought your podcast to my mind and things got worse . I had listened to a few episodes , but was not a regular listener , but I decided to see if you had done an episode on doubt you had . That one episode may have been one of the most important podcasts I've ever heard , because God's word is powerful . I believe it was Oscar who quoted . Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God . God began to transform me , to show me how I had neglected his word and had only been using it to teach others . He began to root sinful thought patterns out of my life and bring me into accountability and fellowship with other men in my life . He ignited in me a passion for evangelism as I became absolutely addicted to your podcast . Listening every day would not only calm the anxiety I was fighting , but fill me with God's word .
Emeal ZwayneThe last two months have been so difficult , but I am so thankful for what God has done for me . Pouring myself into God's word has driven fear away and filled me with a burning faith . Thank you , men , for your obedience to Christ . God may have used you to save my ministry and even my life , without you knowing . Thank you , ray , for writing God has a Wonderful Plan for your life and for the evidence , study Bible . Thank you , easy , for making me laugh even when I was in the pit of despair . Thank you , oscar , for speaking God's powerful word into my life . Thank you , mark , for challenging me to be a soldier for Christ . Thank you , crew , for laboring unseen . With the love of Jesus , matthew .
Ray ComfortWhoa , what a thoughtful thing to say .
Oscar NavarroWow , man , do we have his contact information ? Yeah , I'd love to reach out to him .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , I was given the letter . I didn't have the envelope with it , so I don't know . Matthew , if you're hearing this , email us at podcastatlivingwaterscom and give us your info , because we would love to reach out .
Mark SpenceWe'll put it in the description .
Ray ComfortWe need 400 Matthews emailing us . Send me all you've got .
Oscar NavarroYou know who you are , Matthew . Thank you , man , for that letter . That's so neat .
Emeal ZwayneBrother , thank you . That means more to us than we could describe in words , and especially because of what God did in your heart and the fact that you're on fire for him . We recognize you know that , being a pastor all of us here have pastored and we know the pressures that are involved in that and the enemy's attacks , and so may you continue to go strong and seek after him , and may he use you for his glory . Amen , yeah , all right , fran's time for a radically revolutionary resource . And lo and behold , what do you know ? Scientific facts in the Bible . A hundred reasons to believe the Bible is supernatural in origin . In keeping with what Matthew said , he struggled with recognizing the Bible as God's word . Ray .
Ray ComfortYeah , very excited . I just I didn't know how many had been printed , and over 600,000 have been printed . So I checked the publishers and they're letting us have a special print where we can bring the unit price down to under a dollar and make them available for around that price .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , how many copies have gone out ?
Ray ComfortRay Over 600,000 . 600,000 . That's just one lady trying to reach . I see them in airports all the time .
Emeal ZwayneAll the time same here . Yeah , no , I see them in airports too , In the trash can , when they belong . No , it's a good one . The cool thing about the book Two Friends for those of you listening is it's very short . It's not like it's like Ray , it's not , you know , it's not very long , but it's so , so good and powerful . And it's got little pictures in it too .
Ray ComfortYeah , Is it ?
Emeal Zwaynea coloring book .
Mark SpenceYeah .
Ray ComfortI like to say that to unbelievers when they say can I give you a free book ? Yeah , but I don't read much . It's got little pictures in it and it usually makes them laugh .
Emeal Zwayne600,000 . I'm sure it's going to hit a million before long . Scientific facts in the Bible 100 reasons to believe the Bible is supernatural in origin . And don't forget to get the Living Waters mug , from which you can chug in the Evidence Study Bible that's liable to bring about revival , all at livingwaterscom .
Mark SpenceWow .
Ray ComfortDid that hit key ? It did hit key , didn't it .
Emeal ZwayneThat one was really nice , really nice . All right , friends , today we are dealing with mocking the elderly . How to honor ray comfort , how to honor the elderly ? Yeah , boy , you know , ray , what were dinosaurs like ray and ken ham can tell us . We live together real well . Yeah , you know's .
Emeal ZwayneIt's amazing when , when you hear how young people talk about the elderly and you look at the um attitudes that people have , I remember a while back on YouTube someone had posted a video of an elderly person that they've secretly videoed , like in the gym and just mocking them . It just man . It broke my heart . But there is , I think , a telltale sign of a culture that has radically degenerated into depravity , and that's when you begin to see them mistreat the elderly .
Emeal ZwayneIn fact , there's a passage in Deuteronomy , chapter 28 . This is where the Lord is talking to Israel about the judgment that would come upon them if they were to forsake him and turn from his word and his law . And he says the Lord will bring a nation against you from afar , from the end of the earth , as swift as the eagle flies , a nation whose language you will not understand , a nation of fierce countenance , which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young . I mean Oscar . The Lord here is describing in essence a nation that is going to be used as a tool of judgment . He's talking about how wicked they are . He's explaining them fierce countenance , and one of their marks is that they don't respect the elder .
Oscar NavarroI mean , I can't think of that's where we're at . It's unfortunate because if you look through history , the elderly were honored and respected . Nowadays it's unusual , it's weird , it's considered a great sacrifice . If your parents or your grandparents live with you For most of human history and in most places of the world , that is just what you did . And if you think about it's not just the young , but think about what we do Generally speaking . As people get older , we don't know what to do with them and so they get sent off into retirement homes . They get sent off to be alone .
Oscar NavarroYears ago , my grandma she got to a place where she couldn't afford her condo anymore and we were trying to figure out what to do with her and the options were basically , she can move out of state , the only place she can afford to live , where she'd live by herself in a retirement home . She'd move back to Mexico , where she grew up but doesn't have the best medical you know resources available to her and we were talking and praying through it . And option number three was we can have her move in with us , and in full sacrifice , full , full transparency . I was the one that was hesitant my own grandma I was just , you know , man , this is going to cost us something . This is going to cost us relationally , this is going to cost us financially . This wasn't in our plan . And my incredible wife one day was like , yeah , but she was there for you . You know , she was there for me when my mom kicked me out of the house . And uh , and , and she was absolutely right . And so we , we moved homes and we had her move into it , move in with us .
Oscar NavarroAnd uh , we did that because someone told us the reason why the elderly suffer so much from depression is because they're alone . They said as they , this is someone who works in the industry . They told us , which is a friend of ours . They told us , as you get older , your friends start dying , your relatives start dying , your siblings start dying , your grandkids start moving away . No one starts showing up . You can't drive as far . Your world just gets smaller and smaller and smaller . And I just thought we can't let that happen to my grandma . We just can't . And so , yeah , it's like young people mocking , but it's also the way we set ourselves up as a culture . We almost , like , shove them off into the corners of society because they're well . Why ? Why is that why ? Because they remind us that we're all going to die someday . Seriously , maybe , I think . Sometimes we're like we're so afraid of people getting older because it reminds us of our futility .
Mark SpenceI saw a video of an elderly man go to his neighbor's house . It's all caught on a ring doorbell and he just asked if the person would open a jar for him and he said in passing , he just kind of passed it off and he just said all my friends are dead now I have nobody to open my jar for me . Like wow , he just kind of passed it off and he just said all my friends are dead now I have nobody to open my jar for me . Wow , I went on the Huntington Beach and I brought another petition , signed my petition to legalize Parasite , which is the murdering of the elderly , and I have kids signing my petition .
Emeal ZwayneThey actually signed it Mark , I've got it haven't released it yet . Wow , is that recent ? Did you recently do ?
Mark Spencethat . No , I did it at the same time as I was coming up with signing my petition to legalize abortion .
Ray ComfortYeah , mark , you should have done another one , just so . Thanks for signing those . Got another one about putting students to death . Who ?
Emeal Zwaynesigned this petition . Yeah , no , boy , it's so true , oscar man , I really think that there is this blind spot and I talked about it before . You know . I call it the , you know , invincibility , invincibility , invincibility , complex . That's right , thank you , ray . You remember that I'm here for you ? Oh , thank you , ray . Why is it ? When Oscar said my friends are dying , I did think of it Exactly , popped in your head . I just know everything that goes on , yes , and that was my first book .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , my friends are dying , but but it's this sense of forgetfulness . We're headed there . We're headed there and I can imagine the regret of someone who's elderly and they look back at how they neglected their elderly parents , how they mocked the elderly how impatient they were , and it's so beautiful when you see someone honoring the elderly , especially their own parents .
Emeal ZwayneYesterday I was having lunch with a dear brother and he was telling me how he said to his father-in-law you have a home , our home is yours . His father-in-law has gotten up in years and he just told him this is your home . I want you to know that and I love that . I love it .
Oscar , your wife was the one who said bring your grandma in , knowing that she's going to be with her all day and she's going to help take care of her . You know , my wife , rachel , did the same thing . I mean , we had my dad live with us for 12 years and my wife was helping look after him and she did it with joy and gladness . You know , of course , with all these things there's challenges and trials , but it all the more shows their love because they press on . Mark , you guys had your parents . Laura did the same thing . How long did your parents live with you ?
Mark SpenceMy parents lived with us for six years Now . I mean , let it be said that it's not always a conducive idea to have your parents live with you . Sometimes it's a detriment of your current situation and it can cause undue friction with your spouse or with your kids . So you really do need to seek after wisdom , specifically from your elders of your local church who are going to give an account .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , for sure . And sometimes , you know , I mean it's an issue of need , right ? I mean there are different circumstances , situations . Sometimes they need full medical care and attention . Other times maybe they're not elderly enough and they're prematurely brought into someone's home or whatever . But in those times when our parents need us and we have the capacity , the ability , the circumstances , aligned man , our hearts should be . This is what I want to do , of course under counsel , like you're saying , mark , but it's a disposition of the heart .
Ray ComfortMy parents lived with me for 20 years . I never told you that your parents lived with you for 20 years , yeah , and then I got married .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , I got married got married .
Oscar NavarroYeah , yeah , before he got me . Ray , you mentioned your first book earlier . What was it like writing ?
Ray Comforton papyrus we're talking about being patient with elderly people . I just got to commend my wife . She's the most patient woman in the world . Um , I was wrote to easy and said it was strange the other day because my wife complained just because I threw a ball for the dog and hit sue in the back . And then the next day I was at work and I threw a box to the trash and for some reason it curved to the right and hit her in the back and she complained again . Then I smashed a glass that night at home that wasn't me , it was the gravity thing again and then I spilled some milk . But the thing is about me getting old . I've done that all my life .
Oscar NavarroI've always spilled and smashed .
Emeal ZwayneNothing has changed .
Ray ComfortYeah , yeah , but I've mentioned this before on program two , I think when we started that . Regrets I have a few , but then again too few to mention . But one of my big regrets was something I did from the pulpit many years ago .
Emeal ZwayneIs it because you did it your way , Ray ?
Ray ComfortNo , it didn't , it was my way . Yes .
Emeal ZwayneI did it my way I didn't want you to sing it .
Ray ComfortIt brings tears to the eyes . To sing it , it brings tears to the eyes . Anyway , I was in a pulpit and I had this sermon . It was militant evangelism . And what are you doing ? Spence Taking a B-roll , B-roll ? Yeah , militant evangelism is one of my favorite sermons . It's got a lot of humor in it . It talks about three keys to an army's success . And I used to say right in the middle of the sermon I thank God for saving me at a young age , when I was 22 . And I'd say I thank God he didn't wait until I was 98 , where I would say , oh God , please use me . And I'd fall backwards behind the pulpit and disappear and everyone thought it was greatly funny .
Ray ComfortThis was like 45 years ago or something like that . And so it's very important to be very careful that we don't mock the elderly and we just realize that every elderly person is an Oscar , an Easy , a Mark , an Old Skin . My aunt , who turned 99 , said on the phone I can't believe it , I'm 99 . I could believe it because it wasn't me . But she was saying I'm still 17 , I'm still a young girl , but I can't move , I'm stuck in this body of death . And so with the elderly , we need to be incredibly sympathetic and things happen . As you get older . You guys just starting to move into that realm is easy when you forget something , oscar , when he can't do what he did when he was like 20 years old . But I was looking at my body and admiring it and then I said what did I just say about Martin and Oscar ?
Ray ComfortAnd I had my shirt off and I said to Sue no , I didn't . I said could be worse .
Emeal ZwayneAnd I had Sue say not much and I've got to confess I love her so much .
Ray ComfortWe're talking about getting old . I've got a mirror at home that I've had for years , but I've noticed in recent years the reflection of the mirror has degenerated horribly and so day before yesterday I got rid of the mirror . I put it in the closet .
Ray ComfortI'm not kidding it was a horrible move , but because it was getting so ugly . And and speaking of that , um , when you get older you put on weight and it's not the food you're eating . You're still on the same diet , still exercising self-control , but just things go flop and you get bigger in areas you don't want to get bigger , and so Sue noticed that our scales were faulty .
Oscar NavarroNo , no , serious .
Ray ComfortThey were faulty . Sue found they were faulty . They were saying too much , so we've got new scales and those new scales were faulty . Don't tell me you threw your scales away . No , but we don't use them anymore Stupid things . So , yeah , let's be empathetic with the elderly , because they're just young people on old skin .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , you know , mark , even you and I were talking recently about how we don't feel . Like you know , you're 52 now . Yeah , I'm 48 . But yeah , like you're saying , ray , a 99-year-old aunt , is saying I don't feel . What does it mean ? Do you feel ? How do you know what it feels like ? But it's true , internally I still feel like 17 . I'm young , I'm in high , school .
Ray Comfortstill , I could jump a six-foot fence in my teens . I could just run up to it and be over it like that .
Oscar NavarroI jumped a fence the other day . You did . We were leaving a comedy show and everyone was walking around this giant fence and it was like so jumpable and in my head I was like anytime , I mean , how many more times do I get to jump a fence ?
Mark SpenceI'm like .
Oscar NavarroI'm jumping the fence , so I jumped it just for the thrill of being able to jump a fence . Did you do it ? I did yeah .
Ray ComfortAnd I did great . I didn't fall down . When I was 21 , I jumped a fence it was a corrugated tin fence and I got all over , except for my leg . I got five stitches . No way and that's how we got our first dog , because the doctor had five poodles and I thought they're neat . So we went and got a poodle , but I got five stitches . I actually saw my own bone . I've never seen that before .
Emeal ZwayneThat's a big cut .
Ray ComfortYeah , it was , and I thought it was only a two and a half foot fence . I'm not kidding . I'm not kidding , yeah , but for someone like you that's like a nine foot fence .
Emeal ZwayneThat was a pole vault . But yeah , you know , mark , it's just , I think , that realization as we're getting older that yeah , things change , our spirit doesn't , our heart doesn't . I mean , it can in certain ways , we can mature , we can grow , but we still have that love for life and that vibrancy internally . But but I mean , we're noticing I can't do what I used to do . I can't . I watched a video this morning of a kid and rapping as well . Yeah , I could rap and rhyme .
Oscar NavarroI could do it all the time you can't do what you can't .
Emeal ZwayneBut I watched a video of this kid who had they had like this obstacle course in their house where he's swinging on things , I mean in the house . It was cool . It had like a rock wall and everything . And I'm watching this kid effortlessly do it and in my mind I'm like I can do it , but when the rubber meets the road . I can't . Did you try it right ? Oh no , but , mark , it's again an indication that we're living in a fallen world , and that's a part of the curse .
Ray ComfortBefore we get to Mark , can I just share something ? It's another confession , All right ,
Elderly . First In the 80s there was an advertisement on television where an elderly person would fall down and they'd say I've fallen down and I can't get up . Do you remember those ?
Oscar NavarroYeah .
Ray ComfortThat was the big joke of our generation . It was everyone was falling down . I can't get up . And now we're realizing it's not funny , I know .
Emeal ZwayneBecause you fall down . I know I wrote a song actually with that saying in it when I was younger . I don't sing it anymore . How's it go ? I've fallen and I can't get up , and then I won't get up , and no , I don't get up . Yeah , yeah , is that like an Elvis ? I don't know , but I used to sing it all the time .
Ray ComfortYou could have been good with pants on the ground . Pants on the ground .
Emeal ZwayneI know . So anyway , mark a fallen world under the curse .
Mark SpenceIt is , boy . My heart does break for the elderly . You know , if you see an elderly person instead of a restaurant by themselves , they weren't always like that . You know , there , there was somebody there . Why not just go and sit down with them or offer to pay for the meal ? Or , uh , I saw a video of a gentleman who , um , asked for dessert and he pulled out a candle and he's saying happy birthday to himself . Uh , at our , at our restaurant . You know , we , we , we need to be able to be there .
Mark SpenceI had asked ChatGPT for some practical things that we can do to be there for the elderly and this is what ChatGPT had said Offer companionship Spend time with the elderly by visiting them regularly for conversation , play games , reading books or simply sitting and listening to their stories . Provide transportation Oftentimes they can't drive around . They have medical appointments , grocery shopping , church services . Assist with errands , you know , pick up a food or prescriptions . Next , offer home maintenance help you know they can't typically get up on their roof to fix things or go in the backyard and pull weeds or things of that nature . Technology assistance you know they're not keeping up with the times .
Mark SpenceYou know , the things you think every time that there's an iOS update . They don't know what that means . Provide meals , home-cooked meals , something a little bit more than a microwavable burrito . Check in regularly , you know . Make those regular phone calls . Assist with healthcare needs , accompany elderly individuals to doctor's appointments , help them to understand what the doctor is saying to them and provide assistance with medication management . Support with financial matters . A lot of the elderly are on fixed incomes and fixed incomes don't know anything about raising inflation prices . You know they still have , and this is why it's not uncommon to hear about elderly going back to work and being a greeter at Walmart , and obviously there's nothing wrong with that , but it's not necessarily something that they plan for . And ultimately you can see and Dave Ramsey talks about this that you can see elderly eating cat food . You know , because it's cheaper than human food and they can find enough nourishment to keep going . Advocate for their rights and warn them about scammers , because scammers love to target the elderly .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , Wow , Mark , that's some good stuff . Nothing kills me more than to see an elderly person in a convalescent home that no one ever visits . Yeah , Can you imagine that ? You know you've raised your family , your kids , you've put up with all the challenges of life and there you are in a convalescent home , almost like thrown away . Your family doesn't come , no one comes . You know we used to do a convalescent home ministry years ago , Mark , when we pastored at our church , and you know we would go and we would sing , you know , with these folks and read them the word and seek to be an encouragement , and you just see their faces light up , you know .
Mark SpenceYeah , I regularly would visit a convalescent home when my kids were little babies . And you bring a little baby or a little toddler into a convalescent home , I'll tell you they light up .
Ray ComfortOr a dog . I snuck a dog in , snuck a dog In a bag A winter shish kebab ?
Emeal ZwayneNo , no , my own dog . Oh , you know , ray , you and Sue actually for a number of years looked after your elderly neighbor . Her name was Helen .
Ray ComfortYeah .
Emeal ZwayneAnd she was , just I know , so grateful for what you guys did for her . Tell us a little bit about that story .
Ray ComfortYeah , just started going over and saying hello and we took her a meal here and there and she got sick and she became bedridden and we'd call on her . It was tragic to open the door into a little house and say how are you , helen ? And hear her say just the same . And it was like it every day . I'd try to hook up a television for her because she was lying in bed 24 hours a day . Can you imagine that ?
Emeal ZwayneThe boredom of that , and I was very frustrated in knowing how to keep her occupied during that time , but it was very sad , yeah , and you guys helped her with her finances , you helped her with caretakers , I mean because she was a widow , and this reminds me of James 1 , 27, . Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father exists to visit widows and orphans in their distress .
Ray ComfortEasy . I remember a picture on her wall of this little teenage girl and I used to look at it and think what a sweet little girl and it was Helen .
Mark SpenceWow .
Ray ComfortIt was just a sweet little and that was a revelation for me .
Emeal ZwayneYeah , yeah , her husband had passed away . She had no children and she only had , I think , a nephew that lived out of state . Yeah , but she had no one around . But that's what Christians do you know we should be . There should be no widows on our block that aren't looked after by us .
Oscar NavarroOne of my greatest joys in life was making poached eggs or scrambled eggs or fried eggs . I'd go around there and do the toast and bring it to her in bed and she loved it . I love cooking . I think it's unfortunate in our selfishness we see people around us as caricatures . In our story , you know , there's my elderly neighbor and I don't think twice about it when they're when , to your point , they're people . She was a 12 year old little girl when one time you know they have stories , and that was that , to your point , they're people . She was a 12-year-old little girl one time you know they have stories , and that was that dawned on me in my early 20s .
Oscar NavarroYou know , I went over to my grandma's house . It was after I got saved . I went over to my grandma's house to have dinner with her and we sat down and I'm ashamed to say it was the first time I grew up with this woman . It was the first time where , like you , don't realize that your grandparents , they spend their whole lives out of joy asking about you . But here , for the first time , I was asking about her , about her childhood , about her ambitions , about her first job , about her first car , and I mean she lit up to tell me these stories , you know , and I saw her as a whole different person , a whole new perspective , a life lived far beyond living with me .
Oscar NavarroAnd so and I mean that goes true too and older people in your church , like they've been walking with the Lord so much longer than you , man , to take someone like that out to coffee and to sit down and let them , to disciple you , to allow them to , you know , we often it's funny because in church planting you hear often like people want to go to churches with people in their same season of life I want their kids to be my kid's age and et cetera , et cetera , et cetera . But there's so much to be gained by surrounding yourself with people that are not in your season of life , about people who can speak into your life , the people who have been in the season of your life , about people who can speak into your life , the people who have been in the season of your life , and that's a gift that the Lord is trying to offer us that we often overlook .
Mark SpenceI had visited a convalescent home for about a year with the best man at my wedding , drew Davis , and we went in there and he had his guitar and they allowed us to go inside the room and ask we would ask the people , would it be okay if we sang and stuff ? And you'd be surprised how many people sang and they know these old hymns , they're just familiar with it . And I remember there's this one elderly lady named Margaret and she apologized to us because she didn't get dressed up for the day and she was wearing what she normally wears all day long , which is her pajamas . But on Tuesdays when we'd go and visit her , she would get dressed with the help of the orderly , and this was the one time that she would get dressed up . We'd go and visit her and she it got to the place where she was not able to communicate . You know very well and but I would read some scripture and she would finish the scripture , but she was not able to communicate outside of just the scripture . And then we went in there one night to go and visit her and she had passed away . She wasn't there but the week before she had died .
Mark SpenceI remember going in there and she wasn't responsive in any way , shape or form . I'd read scripture , she wasn't responding , she was kind of grunting and I prayed that the Lord would have mercy on her and I was praying about her departure and reading scripture to her and she was comforted . And this one moment she was lifting up her hands . She was like you know , take me , take me , take me , I'm ready to go .
Mark SpenceAnd when we rounded the corner that following week to see her , we went in there , all excited to see her , and she wasn't there and the bed's just it's tidied up and there's now room for somebody else to take that bed . And that's the circle of life , right that , we will now soon be where the elderly are at , and the elderly are going to be where their parents are at . And I want to be a person who is just well spent for the glory of God , moment by moment , because we have to remember and I said this to my kids not too long ago that we have to remember that our parents and our grandparents are living their first life as much as you are . And because they're living their first life , they're learning things as they go as well as you learn things you need to be able to be there for them .
Emeal ZwayneWow , you know , when I was back at Biola University 18 years old and I started on campus there and there was this elderly gentleman named Ray Chandler and he used to be a missionary for Biola or he was from Biola , I think a graduate , and then he went on the mission field , he remained connected with the university , so it was so beautiful to see that when he retired they honored him , they gave him an apartment on campus a student apartment building .
Emeal ZwayneThey gave him free food he could eat in the cafeteria all the time and he became like the campus grandpa . That's so cool . And he became my very , very close friend . I kind of adopted him as a grandpa . He adopted me as his grandson .
Emeal ZwayneI never knew either of my grandfathers . They died before I was born and so it was so cool not just to have him kind of as an adopted grandpa but as a godly one , and I would just go at his apartment , I'd take a nap in
between classes . Sometimes We'd hang out in fellowship , we'd eat together and I'd sit there and he would weep . He'd weep , you know , over just seeing God move in a young life and I know that that was stirring in him memories of his youth and him serving the Lord in those days of his youth and , I think , also just being loved , you know , being cared for . I mean , ray , they're just discarding the elderly . Today Mark talked about that petition and the arrogance in young people thinking they're not ever going to be there , you know , and maybe their lives will be snuffed out short because they don't honor the elderly , you know , because they're wicked in that regard .
Ray ComfortI think for Christians it's part of being salt and light caring for the elderly . I find it difficult to witness to people that are older than me always have if I'm on a plane and someone's older . It was just a difficult mountain to climb for me . But it's an unfounded fear , because often elderly people are thinking about their immortality more than young people , and so we shouldn't be afraid to say what do you think happens after you die , Grandpa ?
Ray ComfortYou don't have to talk to them about lust straight away and all these things that make us feel uncomfortable . Just ask for their opinion . That's really helped me . Once again , with elderly people , do you think there's an afterlife ? And even sometimes I've been witnessing to some people and it's happened on the pier and just locally I'd ask how old they are . They'd here and just locally I'd ask how old they are .
Ray ComfortI'd say I'm 73 . I'd say your time's up , isn't it ? I'd say you're close to death . I'm that age too . We could be snuffed out tonight . So this is deadly serious , and so we've got to be bold with the elderly . As well as putting our arm around them , we've got to share the gospel with them , amen .
Emeal ZwayneTheir greatest need is the gospel . Leviticus , or Proverbs 20, . Leviticus 19.32 says you shall rise before the gray-headed and honor the presence of an old man and fear your God . I am the Lord . That's the biblical standard you rise and honor before the gray-headed and you honor the presence of an old man . Proverbs 20 . 29 , the glory of young men is their strength and the splendor of old men is their gray head . I hate gray hair but it's indicative of , you know , years of life lived and of wisdom . You know Proverbs 16 , 31, . The silver-haired head is a crown of glory . It is found in the way of righteousness . You know , and , mark , there's that element . You know . Yeah , ray , what's up , ray ? Where's your gray head , ray ?
Ray ComfortI hate gray hair yeah . I hate yellow teeth and gray hair . I'm going to whiten my teeth and color my hair Ray just . I'm growing old . Disgracefully , I'm not going . Gracefully , ray , just surrender to the process .
Oscar NavarroNo , I'm fighting every second of it . I'm holding on to my energy .
Ray ComfortRay , what was the Davidic kingdom like ? And I had what do you call it ? On your eyes . I forgot that operation .
Emeal ZwayneLASIK I had .
Ray ComfortLASIK .
Mark SpenceOh yeah , that was fun . God said let there be light . Yeah .
Emeal ZwayneRay flipped the switch . But , mark , you know the wisdom gained by people that have been around longer than this wisdom . Job 12 , 12, . Wisdom is with the aged men and with length of days understanding .
Mark SpenceYeah , you do well to listen to the counsel of the elderly . Obviously , if they're not saved , you need to measure everything against the weight of what the Word of God says . But you can learn a lot from somebody who's gone before you , learn a lot from somebody who's gone before you , a lot from somebody who's gone before you . Learn in the sanctuary , not in the storm Anybody can learn in the storm but if you learn in the sanctuary through somebody else's mistakes , through somebody else who's gone before you , then you're wisdom , then you're filled with wise , filled with wisdom because you're wise .
Ray ComfortI think it's interesting that I don't know who said it , but when kids 15 years old , when they're a teenager , they know everything . And then , when they hit 21 , they realize they don't know anything and their dad knows everything . Yeah , when it's too late , yeah , that's so true , yeah , and I love this . People who are born elderly .
Emeal ZwayneIt would really help . Benjamin Buttons right Proverbs 23 , 22, . Listen to your father who begot ?
Emeal Zwayneyou and do not despise your mother when she is old . That's so important . And then , 1 Timothy 5 , do not rebuke an older man , but exhort him as a father , younger men as brothers . That's our calling toward older men that we treat them as though they're our fathers and man , you can bless older people , yeah , by all the things . Mark shared what Oscar and Ray talked about going and visiting them , spending time with them , talking to them , just listening to what they have to say . That touches them in ways that you can't even fathom or even comprehend .
Ray ComfortI used to go around and listen to george denson , the elderly minister that I thought had died . Oh , yeah , when I was sitting next to his bed , but he hadn't . But I'd sit and listen to him tell me stories about the first world war yeah again and again and again , because he forgot that he had told me before .
Ray ComfortSo I used to count the flowers on the um wallpaper as he was telling me the story because I'd heard the stories before right , but you're serving that way , that's right I didn't want to let him know that I heard the story before , because he is getting great joy out of telling me that in the First World War men were so fearful to go into battle . He would read Psalm 91 to them . Yeah , and they'd hang on to every word .
Emeal ZwayneIt's a way to serve them . That's awesome . I want to read this thing as we close . That was written it's kind of well-known online . I don't know who the author of it is , but it came back to mind as I was prepping and I found it .
Emeal ZwayneThis is like a parent writing to their younger child . It says the day you see me , I'm getting old . I ask you to please be patient , but , most of all , try to understand what I'm going through . If , when we talk , I repeat the same thing a thousand times , don't interrupt to say you said the same thing a minute ago . Just listen .
Emeal ZwaynePlease Try to remember the times when you were little and I would read the same story night after night until you would fall asleep when I don't want to take a bath . Don't be mad and don't embarrass me . Remember when I had to run after you , making excuses and trying to get you to take a shower when you were just a girl . When you see how ignorant I am when it comes to new technology , give me the time to learn and don't look at me that way . Remember , honey , I patiently taught you how to do many things , like eating appropriately , getting dressed , combing your hair and dealing with life's issues every day .
Emeal ZwayneThe day you see me . See , I'm getting old . I ask you to please be patient , but most of all , try to understand what I'm going through . If I occasionally lose track of what we're talking about , give me the time to remember , and if I can't , don't be nervous , impatient or arrogant . Just know in your heart that the most important thing for me is to be with you , and when my old , tired legs don't let me move as quickly as before , give me your hand , the same way that I offered mine to you when you first walked . When those days come , don't feel sad . Just be with me and understand me while I get to the end of my life with love , I'll cherish and thank you for the gift of time and joy we shared with a big smile and the huge love I've always had for you . I just want to say I love you , my darling daughter .
Ray ComfortHow come you didn't cry with that ? I know ?
Emeal ZwayneBut yeah , you know , it's just remembering , remembering what our parents have done for us and friends . I just want to encourage you this is an opportunity for many of you listening right now to heed the conviction of the Spirit of God . When's the last time you visited your grandma or your grandpa ? When's the last time you picked up the phone to call your parents , not to ask them for something , but to just tell them you love them and how much you appreciate them , how grateful you are for them ? When was the last time you went over to that elderly neighbor's house to see if there's anything you can do for them , or just to get them something to bless them ? Man , we need to really step back and examine our hearts . We are on our way there and my hope is that we recognize we can be a conduit in love , and we always talk about people being made in the image of God when we're talking about babies . Those elderly people still bear the image of God and we need to love that image of God in them and love them .
You can't be dumb after that .
