Dylan Schmidt:

This is the show for creative entrepreneurs who have a message to share and want to live a life of freedom. Learn how to grow your network and net worth. Hear from exciting guests and more. My name is Dylan Schmidt and Welcome to Digital Podcaster. Welcome to Digital Podcaster. My name is Dylan Schmidt, your host and today I'm speaking with the return the greatest, most triumphant return in Digital Podcaster history. Don't let any other repeat guests hear that. But it's Liz Wilcox, ladies and gentlemen.

Liz Wilcox:

Hey, oh my gosh, I gotta

Dylan Schmidt:

pause. I don't think I've ever done that actually on here. Wow.

Liz Wilcox:

Yeah. Dylan is something else isn't here. We just love him. Let's give. Let's pause the recording and just give him a five star review. Okay.

Dylan Schmidt:

No, no, don't do that. Keep listening. So, basically, Liz is amazing. We had she was on a previous episode, if you want a more in depth episode, listen to that one. In this one. We're going to strictly talk about Liz his upbringing and how she came to be just kidding. I was like, I mean, that's nothing worse than like, what just get to the content. That was scared if you're listening to this podcast. That was opposite of everything. I told Liz. I was like, I just want to make this a rapid fire question. Face was just so priceless. That made my month possible. So really, I want to just do because a lot of people had questions after the last episode. And you are an email marketing whiz, I guess. Wizkid is cool, right? Like it's cool to Wizkid. And

Liz Wilcox:

yes, go keep going. He's doing great as me

Dylan Schmidt:

this encouragement. People want to do email, but they're like afraid to get an email. My audience is entrepreneurs, podcasters people making content, all that good stuff. And so I wanted to ask you just three quick questions. We don't have to elaborate and go super deep on them. But I want to make them actionable. And is it cool if we just hop in? Okay, let's do

Liz Wilcox:

it. All right. I feel like I'm like in the hot seat with Regis Philbin. And it's like, who wants to be in our millionaires? Do you mind if we get into it? Did Oh, no, no, no. Yeah,

Dylan Schmidt:

I have. I think I have something. No, that's not good. Maybe this one? That's scary music, but we'll use it. So that's good. Let's get you appear on a lot of podcasts? I do. What is your number one tip for appearing on more podcasts?

Liz Wilcox:

I'm really impressed the host and be a repeat guest which actually this a perfect example. Of that. Yeah, um, yeah. So really just knowing your stuff, and to be a to really impress the host, is to teach them something that they don't actually know. And also, and I've done this, actually, you know, hit the back button. 3060 seconds, I talked to the person listening to the podcast, like saying he's doing a great job, isn't he? I'm talking to you, the listener, not a lot of podcast, guests can do that, or even know how to do that. Right. But podcasts are very conversational in nature. So always include that. You know, that third person, you know, aka you right now. And that's really going to impress the host. And make sure you have buckets. Right. So I've got a few different topics I talk about, but of course, they kind of overlap. So normally, the host says, Oh, I only want this episode to be 30 minutes. 20 minutes, rapid fire. And so leave them wanting more. So they invite you back like cool when we didn't get to talk about that. And they'll invite you back.

Dylan Schmidt:

Incredible. I never look I learned something new. Dang, you're walking the talk.

Liz Wilcox:

I'm gonna take his job. Okay, Dylan. Next question.

Dylan Schmidt:

No questions. We're done here. I plead the fifth. You said something, though. I just have to say one thing is that speaking to the listener, so many people don't even even podcasters don't address the listener. So that's so cool. As a guest. I just have to highlight that. So do you believe in as a guest or as a host? Don't even do that. So what a freakin skill you got. Second question. And a breath before that. How? What I would say what's your number one tip on how to use email to promote your podcast episode as a podcast host?

Liz Wilcox:

That's a great question. So don't just send out newsletters saying hey, I got a new podcast up yo. I did an audit for someone a podcast host and all Have their subject lines were really like a lot of the same. It was like new podcast, and then the episode title, which is a really long subject line that you know, you're not even going to see the entire thing. So making sure when you're, you know, instead of just blasting out, Oh, I've got this new episode, make it an actual newsletter and you can listen to Dylan in my previous podcast episode about how to really get into that. But making sure you're sharing a personal update, right? Like, not just Oh, how I met Liz Wilcox, but like what you did today, right? I can't remember your dog's name, but like bringing that when, what Wednesday? Well, that's right. So Oh, yeah, Wednesday. So you know, bringing Wednesday into the picture, like, what was something interesting that happened? You know, maybe she barged in, or, you know, you even the sound effect thing When Dylan was trying to find the right sound effect a couple minutes ago saying like, Oh, I recorded this episode today. You know, I couldn't get the right sound effect, but we just went with it. You know, anyway, you know, here's last, you know, here's what I recorded last week, just sharing a little bit of that personal update. And again, I go weigh into that on the last episode. And not being afraid to email when there isn't a new episode, when you, you know, when Wednesday had to go to the vet, and you know, it just wasn't in the right mindset, or, you know, your guests canceled on you not being afraid to email and say, hey, you know, I didn't get a new episode out, but I just wanted to touch base if there's anything you need, or you know, point them to pass content, just really varying your emails in the inbox, right? This is the part where you know, you pull over you take the dish rag, you know, wipe your hands, write this down the ding ding, do you have a ding ding ding sound? Let me look. Okay. Come on Dylan. Rapid fire.

Dylan Schmidt:

All we got is no, wait, no.

Liz Wilcox:

No. Okay, I'm gonna say Ding, ding, ding. Here's the sound insert sound insert proper sound effect here. In the inbox, you want to be familiar. Oh, there you go. You want to be familiar, right? Like, I know who Dylan is. I know, Liz, but not predictable. You don't want them to think, Oh, I know what's in that. I'm going to save that for later. Right? You want to be familiar, but not predictable. So if you're just sending out, you know, subject line, new podcast every single week, and it's just, you know, got three sentences linked to the thing. I, Dylan, I know what's going to be in there. I'm not you know, I don't have time to listen to your podcast episode right now. I'll save it for later. Sidenote later means never right. If it gets to page two, we're not opening it. Right. So yeah, that's that's my story. And I'm sticking to it.

Dylan Schmidt:

Love that familiar, not predictable. Do I have your permission to get that tattooed on my lower back? Liz Wilcox, please do. Thank you. Thank you. So much. This feels like Did you ever see Billy on the Street? Have you seen Billy on this? Yes, it feels a little bit like this. Podcast edition. We gotta go like,

Liz Wilcox:

because we're on the internet streets.

Dylan Schmidt:

The podcast version, this is effect sound effects. That go I need more. I'm gonna download more after this. Alright, that is super valuable. And, and I asked actually, this on the last person I interviewed and this is probably not a best practice by any means I would ever recommend. But do you think it'd be a good idea to call this episode familiar? not predictable. Yes. Next question. Next question. Simplest way to get more email subscribers is is the million dollar question. Figuratively and physically. If one was wanting to manifest a million dollars,

Liz Wilcox:

yeah. Easiest way to get email subscribers asked for them on your podcast, Hey, are you subscribed to my email list yet? Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, whatever is, you know, whatever. The benefit of joining your list is if you've got a freebie and opt in a discount, you know, special behind the scenes content, whatever. Whatever the incentive is, just ask oh my gosh, open your mouth. No one is gonna hype you before you hide yourself baby.

Dylan Schmidt:

Yeah, hype hype train rolling through beep beep this I'm now making my own beep beep these are all organic sound effects. You're hearing people just so okay, this, as you were saying that it kind of reminds me a little bit of when? Well, I've always been completely nervous to ask for someone's phone number. And therefore Yeah, I'm like, no girlfriends in high school. One girlfriend but she was long distance. didn't really count.

Liz Wilcox:

But it's doing a great job, isn't he?

Dylan Schmidt:

That should be the title of this episode. But um It is really as simple as just asking. And then I guess it's having that confidence that someone will sign up for it. Because it seems like a leap right to just ask for I'm trying to ask from the people. Like, with like, if you're completely new to the game, it just seems like that seems too easy. Liz, like, What do you mean? Just you

Liz Wilcox:

ask for the easiest way to get away while you like, run Facebook ads. That's the hardest way. It might seem like the easiest. But Facebook ads are a like, crazy monster. So yeah, if you're like, oh, that's, that's too easy, or doing what you just said about? Oh, you have to have the confidence to do it. Like, am I wrong? Now we're just this is just the sound effect episode. Confidence doesn't come from anything but action, you're not gonna get confident. Asking girls out I mean, getting you're getting people on your email list until you actually go out. And you just ask, right? Do do it on your podcast in your emails, ask people to share your pocket. You know, same thing in your Instagram stories. You know, once a month, I talk about my email list and I say, Oh, are you on this? Did you get this? And you know, it can be it doesn't have to be any pretty link or anything. You can just say like, DM me your address, right? I'm just that is the easiest way to kind of jumpstart, especially as a podcast host, you are missing out, you know, we all want to get maybe we want to get sponsors. And we want to promote this person's thing. And oh, if I only just get 100 more downloads, I'm gonna have the confidence to reach out to that sponsor. Well, guess what? Be your own sponsor, Dylan. You can't see him, but he is like, breech girl. She's like, she is on the pulpit, y'all. Um, but really like just putting that like, you know, as simple as thinking of it as I'm going to sponsor my own podcast, with my email list. And if you're like, oh, I don't know what the value is. People, you are in people's ears, you know, 20 minutes to an hour a week, or you know, whatever, right? The length of your episode. They like you, the people and you don't want people that don't like you on your email list. Right? So they're not going to sign up. But the people that are like, Oh my gosh, I love Dylan, so much. Hockey. I want to hear more from him. podcast listeners, I feel like are a special breed. Like if you're in somebody's ears like they are committed to you, right? I actually don't listen to podcasts that much. Because I except Yeah, except Digital Podcaster. And shout out to miles Hanson, our mutual friend who passed as well, the subtle art of not yelling, I think, super, super dope podcast. But though, see, I'm talking about miles here, because he's in my ears, right? I like him. I'm on his email list. Right? Same with Dylan. So don't be afraid to you know, just ask for the you know, hey, do you want to be on my email list? Here are some of the benefits and don't expect you know, every single, you know, download to equal subscriber, that's not going to happen. But you know, it is a very simple way to get started with your email list. And those people that join those early adopters, quote, unquote, are going to help you build your list more they're going to share with their friends, right?

Dylan Schmidt:

Yes, I literally couldn't have said it better myself, because I'm not you. And that's true, that you're here, sharing this today. Thank you so much, Liz for sharing that. Where can people learn more about you and work with you?

Liz Wilcox:
