You're listening to digital creator with Dylan Schmidt. That's me, Dylan Schmidt. This is human Dylan Schmidt, by the way. If you follow me on social media, you've seen I've posted a few AI clones lately. I don't know how else to verify, especially through an audio format that this is indeed me. Maybe I can make a really random sound that AI couldn't make and that will be my identifier. I don't think an AI clone can make a bird noise yet or I wouldn't know how to type that in which would then have the AI clone produce that noise. Even pauses, it gets down. So my original plan for this Episode was actually to do it all AI with the professional AI clone that I just got back from 11 Labs. And so actually on Monday when I got the AI clone back I was so excited to make this episode fully The AI clone. And I'll tell you what, it takes so much typing to fill up an entire podcast episode. If I was making, Let's say just, you know, whatever episode and I just had, like, AI generate the content, that would be much faster. But actually typing it out which is what I would do. I wouldn't just give you some chat gpt read out. Actually typing out That many words for a whole episode was more work than just speaking it. And if you were just on the creator club call that we just had. I was just talking about this but, you know, I was like I don't know what the best workflow is. Do I speak it into a recorder then have that transcribed and then the AI then reads the transcript. That just seems like so much more work versus just speaking it like I'm speaking it now. So you got real Dylan, And maybe I'll do a future AI podcast episode or maybe just a segment or something so that we can see how it sounds more long form. But I still need to play with it a little bit more. Like I mentioned, I got my professional voice clone back from 11 Labs. They said originally it was gonna take about 4 weeks. It ended up taking closer to 3, and it sounds incredible. To put it simply, sounds better than I thought it would, honestly. And there's these little sliders when you're typing in your voice that you can move around, and it changes things like, just like tone. Kind of like how I'm saying this now, how I'm pausing as I'm talking. If you wanted to sound more creative, I guess, more nuanced like yourself, then you move the slider in one direction. If you want it to sound just straightforward, more similar to like just a Neutral delivery but it's still in your voice. Then you move the slider in another direction. And another crazy thing they have With this is you can use there's 2 settings. So one of them is text to speech, which is where you type it and then it speaks it in your AI voice. There's another one where it's like speech to speech or audio to speech or something. So my wife recorded a voice note and then I uploaded it in there and it changed what she said in the voice note. But my voice, it sounded pretty wild. Very you know, it doesn't sound just like me. It sounds like her voice, the way the nuances of her words, how she says certain words. But it was my voice. Pretty weird. Let's dive into some interesting topics going on right now. Talking about gear, d j I came out with their new d j I mic 2. I'm pretty sure before now, every other time I've talked about d j I, I've been saying d g I which is not accurate. They announced their new microphone and all the details about a week ago and it's already released which is pretty Exciting stuff. The microphone itself has already been out for a couple months. The transmitter part because it was part of DJI's Pocket 3 camera which I have. And the pocket 3 camera came with and the creator kit came with A wireless microphone that connects to the pocket 3 camera. And so I've been using that for a little while. But now the full package just came out like a week ago, which you couldn't get previously. There's a lot of competition in the space now with wireless small Bluetooth style microphones. But one, it's got this translucent cool look to it that is very reminiscent of, like, the nineties where you can see the inner workings of, You know, the microphone and my phone case is actually like a kind of a translucent thing, so I definitely am hooked just on the Aesthetics alone. But the case itself is like a little hard shell case very similar to Rode wireless pro, the newer Rode wireless microphone that came out last year, which I own. So I guess I own The new d j I mic 2 and the Rode wireless pro both feature 32 bit float internal recording which I've been playing around with. And it's really handy because you don't have to worry about clipping. So how that works is, you know, before you would have to monitor your levels, make sure they're absolutely perfect. Now I just kind of glance at the levels but I'm not worried about oh, this distorted the track and it Ruin the audio and I have to like rerecord or repair it. With 32 bit float recording, you don't have to worry about that. It just records it. And then afterwards, you can make sure that it sounds exactly how you want but it captures so much more information of the audio file. It won't destroy anything. Like, you don't to worry about clipping. You don't have to worry about it being too low because it has more information. It's kinda like, you know, with less information, it could only piece together so many parts of an audio track. The other thing that the d g a d I'm already saying DJI Mic 2 has is intelligent noise canceling. I look at this like this little microphone which is Picking up from multiple directions, it's closer to a dynamic microphone. It's closer to picking up the noise that you want, which is near the microphone source. So I think that's a really cool addition. And one thing I did want to mention about this DJI Mic 2 release is, You know, normally when new tech is released on YouTube, everyone goes kind of wild. Happens every year with iPhones, Max pretty much any electronic from any of the major companies. DJI, RODE, Sony, Canon, Apple, all of these major electronic companies. Youtubers will talk about them in Youtube videos because they make for great content. People are searching for it. It's just so easy. I mean, here I am talking about it and giving essentially, like, a little mini review. But it's really easy for content creators to talk about. And a lot of content creators will wanna stay in the good graces of companies so that they keep, You know, either getting sponsored by the company or they keep receiving gear. They're hesitant to say anything really negative. There's been creators making videos about the DJI Mic 2. And there's been some People that have been unhappy with the DJI Mic 2 with audio quality. And from what I can understand is It's just producing poor audio quality. It's sounding like it has this maybe intelligent noise canceling or just it's not sounding good And people are unhappy with the files. And it sounds like something that could be updated with like a firmware, update that you would just, you know, plug it to your computer and update it. And I've seen a couple Youtube videos that have called out this issue. And 1 youtuber in particular who I don't have his information Utterly available. But he was like, this is just a minute and a half review. I I'll do a full review when they update This microphone, because I can't actually do the review given how the audio quality is. So I think, you know, as viewers, we can appreciate that honesty from youtubers and that transparency. But in the comment section and what I'm seeing kind of buzz around the internet is there's a lot of people that are just Not that happy with the d j I mic 2. And they're wanting firmware updates or much improved than the d j I mic one. And then there's also, you know, people saying it just doesn't nearly sound as good as the Rode wireless pro. But as it stands right now, I don't see people raving about this product Even though it does have some cool new features like 32 bit float and the whole noise canceling effect. I'm curious for you. Are you kind of like over this microphone hype, or will you be picking up a DJI mic 2 or something else? There was a massive leak that exposed 26,000,000,000 records in mother of all breaches. It includes data from Twitter, Dropbox, and LinkedIn. Reading this article on the tech spot. 12 terabytes of data from sites including Twitter slash x, LinkedIn, Weibo, and more. There is a lot of websites on here. It seems like a lot of these records are aggregated from previous breach records that have already appeared as stand alone breaches. So it seems like something that has appeared before mostly. It's like a collection of those. But regardless, it's an absolutely fantastic reminder to keep your protection tight on your information. I have if you've listened to this podcast, you know already or if you've watch my social media. Maybe I've talked about it there too. I've had issues with my account getting hacked, my Facebook account, And of course my YouTube taken down but still working on that one which has nothing to do with a password hack. But I got my Facebook account hacked and I was continually getting it hacked. Even though I use a password manager, even though I use 2 factor authentication, and I make sure that I'm regularly changing my passwords. I have reminders to regularly change my passwords. I am Pretty cautious and I would consider myself aware of vulnerabilities that I have, in the kind of, You know, personal cybersecurity space. I'm not, you know, an expert at it, but I'm definitely not an absolute amateur added either. And, and I was still able to get my account hacked, given all that. So, you know, after that lesson of last year with my Facebook Account getting hacked. I just have to, you know, kind of accept that, you know, weird things can happen, and I might not always be able to pinpoint to exactly The issue I will say one thing that has helped me though because, I was able to get my Facebook account back. I still didn't get the Facebook page back yet. And Facebook, they didn't follow-up. I've I have over Sixty emails towards them expressing the severity of the issue, the whole thing, and, still have yet to hear back from them. And that was going on almost 5 months ago. So yeah. One thing that has helped, though, if you're like me and you use, like a Google Workspace, you have like a Gmail type account is you might have known you can you have your email address. Right? Like my email address. I don't know if I should give out my real one. I I've given it out before on this, show, but I'll just Make up 1 for the sake of this, example. Because now I feel like someone listen to this and they start trying to hack. Don't do that. But let's make up 1 for the sake of this show. Say it's dylan@digitalcreator.com. And that's my email. Dylan@digitalcreator.com. With Gmail. And I don't know how this is for other email accounts. But with Gmail, you can add in like Dylan plus, And then you could make any word there at digital creator.com. So I could do dylan plus sign podcast at digital creator.com. Someone sends an email to that, and it still comes to me. Now I've been using that combination, a secret combination, for, my social media and other things. And I have had no issues. I knock on wood. In addition to, you know, changing passwords regularly, Having complex impossible to guess passwords and, just staying on top of things have had no issues with that type of combination. If, you know, you're not feeling totally safe with just 2 factor For whatever reason, adding in that might be worth to explore for you. I feel a little bit more comfortable having this email that is unique only to that login. So say, for example, I hosted this podcast through transistor. I could do, like, Dylan plus transistor@digitalcreator.com. Now if my email and password get leaked and some data breach thing In it the transistor login information got leaked. It might say like Dylan plus transistor at digitalcreator.com. But I could change that. I could change that out to anything else. So I look at it. It's not perfect, but it's just another layer, of protection not having the same email for everything. Just my 2ยข. Lastly, nightshade, the free tool that poisons AI models is now available for artists to use. If you have been living offline, which I don't know how anybody could, many artists are speaking up about the Influence and the just plagiarism that AI is, you know, taking from their art. And then people are able to recreate, very similar works of art using DALL E, mid journey, things like that. So nightshade is a I'll tell you about it actually. There's an article that I'll link to in the episode description. Applies a tag to a image that subtly alters the image at the pixel level So other AI programs see something totally different than what's actually there. If you're in the Chat g b t open AI, Subreddit. You might have seen a similar thing. But basically, like, people are I'm finding, like, different prompts that just confuse, DALL E, chat t p t. And I haven't seen issues with midjourney yet, But they'll put in like a combination of words that seemingly don't make much sense or they're very simple and then they'll get a different result than you would think. And I think this AI, poisoning tool nightshade is a similar thing. Like, to our eyes, it looks like one thing to the way AI sees it is completely different. If you've used AI to look at images, You'll know that it doesn't always get it right. For example, I asked it to describe an image in great detail and it was just off about what was in the photo. It got, you know, 75, 80% of it right. But there were some fine details that completely changed the idea of the photo. Like if you read that but you hadn't seen the photo, you would think it would be completely different from then what was actually in the photo. And if you looked at it, you would immediately know, oh, that's this thing. And then you look at the AI description of the photo and you're like, no. That's not it at all. So this will be interesting. I don't exactly know how you stop. It's just gonna be an ongoing battle. You know? How do you stop hackers? You don't just you have to continually, you know, secure yourself. And there's always a new thing. Right? There's always a new thing. Just like how there's, you know, good of anything. And people have their thoughts on chat gbt and, you know, these AI tools. There's also, you know, Not nice AI tools out there. We'd like to think we know how all these AI models work. We really don't. You know? And for every good version of something, There's also a bad version of something and we, you know, wanna say like, well, this is how open AI does things. This is how, you know, these other Google barred or anthropic. These companies do things. But there's stuff going on out there that we don't have any knowledge of. Just like, you know, the data breach mentioned in the last, segment. Same thing with this. It's just gonna be an ongoing battle. And I think it's our responsibility as creators, especially for artists is to just be, you know, how can I Embrace this in a way that it doesn't affect my work? We only have so many hours in the day. You know? I was looking at how you actually use this Nightshade. And I would bet you, like, most artists are not you know, again, this is version 1. Most artists are not gonna be Aware of how to do this. Like, here's how the requirements for using nightshade works. This is what it says. Artists seeking to use nightshade must have a Mac with Apple chips inside. You're already like, Okay. M 1, m 2, or m 3, or a PC running Windows 10 or 11. The tool can be downloaded for both, OS is here. The windows file is capable of running on a PC's GPU provided it is one from Nvidia on this list of supported hardware. Some users have also reported long download times due to the overwhelming demand for the tool as long as 8 hours in some cases. Wow. Again version 1, it's cool to see this stuff out there but it seems like it is covering up a deeper issue that only time will tell that we you know, how we solve it and humans will solve it. But, am I am I crazy for thinking this is just like A band aid over a wound that we need to address. That wraps it up for this week. I'll tell you what. I've been, you know, experimenting with these new formats in this podcast, and I'm really enjoying it. One thing that has come to my mind though is it's Pretty radically different from what I have done in past episodes. And that is a little bit scary and definitely outside of my comfort zone. But on one hand it is exciting because I am exploring you know topics that are related to what's going on. It's not just, you know, educating the whole time. There's variety which is important to me as a creator. I wanna blend These passions into 1, and that's what I'm doing. And I would give this advice to someone else who was asking me is That's amazing. Cool. Do it. It's just gonna take longer to find your groove. And that's me speaking to myself. It's gonna take longer to find that groove because It's completely unique. It's not like there's a road map exactly of what it will look like. And if I can allow myself that flexibility to Sit with it even if it doesn't always feel right at times. I think that there'll be gold on the other side of the rainbow. But sometimes it's scary. Like not gonna lie. Like sometimes I'm just like is this the right thing to be doing? Why did I even kinda go down this path? But I feel good about the direction things are heading, and it feels in line with what I want to create and put out into the world which at the end of the day, what more could you ask for? So thanks again for being here. I'll catch you in the next episode.
