on Matariki weekend, we remember the legacies of service left by our spiritual ancestors in this church, and particularly those who have passed away this year for whom the grief is still fresh. 00:01:35.599 --> 00:01:47.840 At the same time, we we celebrate and receive with gratitude the good that God is doing in our midst in this present season and everything that we have received from Him. for sure about the future of this local church at Windsor Park is that it exists not for itself, but to serve our wider community. 00:02:09.439 --> 00:02:16.000 So the theme of our one-off message today is love like Jesus, serve like Jesus. 00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:20.080 And we're going to look at three requirements of serving like Jesus. 00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:22.719 And I'll warn you they're pretty challenging. 00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:24.639 So are you ready to get into them? 00:02:24.879 --> 00:02:30.719 The first is to serve like Jesus, we need to get on our knees. 00:02:31.039 --> 00:02:34.080 And I've learned about this since becoming a parent. 00:02:34.319 --> 00:02:48.080 Meal times are a little bit tidier now, but in those early days of solid food, the chances of a spoonful of food making it successfully from the bowl to the mouth of my son was extremely low. 00:02:48.400 --> 00:02:52.960 Baby feeding guides tell you to embrace the mess. 00:02:53.120 --> 00:02:58.479 But as each spoonful hit the floor, I was thinking more about limiting the cleanup. 00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:05.759 When it was time to clean up, I I tried to reach the bits I could and spot clean the mess that I could see. 00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:12.159 As I realized the scale of the situation, I reluctantly got down on my hands and knees. 00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:16.719 And although it was uncomfortable, it did make the cleaning a lot easier. 00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:21.759 I was closer to the floor, so I could see the spots that I might have missed otherwise. 00:03:21.840 --> 00:03:24.319 And I didn't have to keep uh bending down. 00:03:24.879 --> 00:03:29.759 While scrubbing the floor underneath the table, a thought came to me. 00:03:30.319 --> 00:03:34.159 This is a lot like many aspects of the Christian life. 00:03:34.479 --> 00:03:38.879 You don't have to get on your hands and knees, but it helps. 00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:48.719 Let's look at a perhaps the most famous example of Jesus demonstrating humble service from John chapter 13, verses 3 to 5. 00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:50.879 I bet you know where we're going. 00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:58.879 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God. 00:03:59.120 --> 00:04:05.520 So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:15.680 After that he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:25.120 Now, although this text doesn't explicitly say that Jesus got on his knees to wash the disciples' feet, you have to imagine that he did. 00:04:25.360 --> 00:04:29.120 Like I said, some things are just easier on your knees. 00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:34.720 Ultimately, though, this is not about body posture, it's about heart posture. 00:04:35.120 --> 00:04:42.319 Kneeling represents humility, a willingness to take the low road and to put another first. 00:04:43.439 --> 00:04:51.519 Mark, in another in his gospel account, reveals what we might call the philosophy of leadership behind Jesus' actions. 00:04:52.480 --> 00:05:04.560 Jesus called them together and said, You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 00:05:05.279 --> 00:05:06.879 Not so with you. 00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:14.879 Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 00:05:15.439 --> 00:05:23.680 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. 00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:27.120 That is Mark Chapter ten, verse forty-two to forty-five. 00:05:27.600 --> 00:05:37.920 After washing their feet, he says, Now that I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:43.120 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:56.560 And some of you will be relieved to know that I'm I'm not going to ask you to wash the feet of those you're watching with, but we all have the opportunity today and every day to practice humble service. 00:05:57.040 --> 00:06:01.519 I wonder how we could get on our knees in service today. 00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:10.160 It may be a small act, it may feel unseen, but Jesus, who taught us how to serve, will see it. 00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:15.519 And of course, this is not just about a one-off act or serving for one day. 00:06:15.759 --> 00:06:29.759 As we look to the future this Matariki season, our hope is that we can make humble service a habit, cultivating a lifestyle of service as we continue to build stronger communities by putting our faith into action. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:35.759 So our first point is that to serve like Jesus, we need to get on our knees. 00:06:36.079 --> 00:06:39.519 Perhaps literally, but definitely spiritually. 00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:47.279 Getting on our knees means getting over ourselves and serving with love and humility, just like Jesus. 00:06:48.240 --> 00:06:54.240 Our second point is to serve like Jesus, we need to get our hands dirty. 00:06:54.879 --> 00:07:06.879 If the story of Jesus washing the disciples' feet wasn't enough, there's a beautiful story in the Gospel of Matthew that shows Jesus' willingness to get his hands dirty in loving service. 00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:13.040 When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 00:07:13.600 --> 00:07:21.839 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean. 00:07:22.560 --> 00:07:26.000 This time it's the man with leprosy on his knees. 00:07:26.319 --> 00:07:33.600 And the word used here for leprosy could actually have been at any of a range of skin conditions that happened at the time. 00:07:33.759 --> 00:07:37.839 But whatever the precise condition, the outcome was clear. 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:43.680 Social isolation, ritual impurity, and an untouched life. 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:49.199 Lepers were known as unclean, the epitome of dirty in the ancient world. 00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:51.040 Untouchable. 00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:57.040 Imagine how you felt at the height of the COVID pandemic when someone sneezed near you. 00:07:57.279 --> 00:07:58.399 Unclean. 00:07:59.040 --> 00:08:04.160 That is nothing compared to how people distanced themselves from lepers. 00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:10.399 For them, this was not just physical, it meant complete social and spiritual cutoff. 00:08:10.800 --> 00:08:16.079 So of course, nobody got near them, let alone touch them. 00:08:16.399 --> 00:08:22.079 This man on his knees had long forgotten the warmth of human contact. 00:08:22.560 --> 00:08:25.279 So he doesn't ask Jesus to touch him. 00:08:25.519 --> 00:08:27.439 That would be ridiculous. 00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:30.800 He asks him to clean him. 00:08:31.279 --> 00:08:34.799 Perhaps if he's healed, people will come near him again. 00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:38.960 Perhaps if he's clean, people will touch him. 00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:44.000 So he says in faith, Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean. 00:08:44.879 --> 00:08:47.440 And Jesus was willing to do even more. 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:48.879 Verse 3. 00:08:49.679 --> 00:08:54.320 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. 00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:58.320 I am willing, he said, be clean. 00:08:58.879 --> 00:09:01.679 Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. 00:09:02.320 --> 00:09:08.879 You see, the man asked Jesus to clean him so that people could touch him, but Jesus flips the order. 00:09:09.120 --> 00:09:12.480 Jesus touches him so he can heal him. 00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:18.879 Jesus is willing to get his hands dirty as he goes about the Father's mission of grace. 00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:28.080 He touches the leper, eats with sinners, includes the outsider, associates with all the wrong people, and of course that includes us. 00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:43.759 We are all beneficiaries of the grace of God, the grace that comes first, the grace that didn't wait for us to clean ourselves up, but that reached out and touched us, as Paul says, while we were still sinners. 00:09:45.279 --> 00:09:55.840 And as Jesus said to the disciples after washing their feet, I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 00:09:56.320 --> 00:10:00.320 The question is, are you willing? 00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:03.519 That's what the leper asked of Jesus. 00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:05.919 If you are willing, you can make me clean. 00:10:06.080 --> 00:10:11.360 And Jesus was willing not only to heal from a distance, but to reach out and touch. 00:10:11.600 --> 00:10:14.799 And now Jesus asks us the same question. 00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:16.799 Are we willing? 00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:19.279 Are we willing to get on our knees? 00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:21.759 Are we willing to get our hands dirty? 00:10:21.919 --> 00:10:25.919 And lastly, are we willing to get out there? 00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:31.120 Because our final point is that to serve like Jesus, we need to get out there. 00:10:31.360 --> 00:10:39.919 The final characteristic of Jesus' service that I'm highlighting today is that it crossed all sorts of social barriers. 00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:48.639 Jesus seemed to go out of his way and quite enjoy breaking every preconception about who he had come to serve. 00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:56.000 Here's a quick list of just a few examples of Jesus' boundary-breaking ministry. 00:10:56.720 --> 00:11:03.120 Gentiles, he he heals a demon-possessed man in the region of Geresensinus. 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:09.360 For children, who could forget Jesus' famous line, let the little children come to me. 00:11:09.600 --> 00:11:14.080 As for women, the healing of the woman who had chronic bleeding. 00:11:14.399 --> 00:11:20.399 Tax collectors, a despised group of people, well he invites himself to Zacchaeus's house. 00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:26.799 And even the oppressing forces, he heals a Roman centurion's servant. 00:11:27.679 --> 00:11:39.600 And those are just five quick examples, I could give many more, of Jesus going beyond the expected norms of ministering to well-educated Jewish men. 00:11:40.559 --> 00:11:51.120 As we attempt to model our love and service on Jesus, we have to ask ourselves what social, cultural, or geographic barriers may hold us back. 00:11:52.240 --> 00:11:56.799 And of course, it is important to serve one another within the church. 00:11:56.960 --> 00:12:01.600 The New Testament is full of instructions to do that, and we should never stop doing that. 00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:07.919 But we also need to get out there and serve beyond the walls of the church. 00:12:08.240 --> 00:12:20.159 I can't claim to have done this maths myself, but some estimates suggest that over 90% of Jesus' public ministry took place outside of a synagogue setting. 00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:22.159 Sit with that for a moment. 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:27.360 What if 90% of our ministry happened outside of the church walls? 00:12:27.600 --> 00:12:34.879 At Windsor Park, one way we seek to keep an outward focus is through our Beyond the Walls ministries. 00:12:35.120 --> 00:12:42.720 And these are amazing local, regional, and global projects doing incredible kingdom work. 00:12:43.360 --> 00:12:52.080 And I love being part of a church that prioritizes supporting initiatives that are quite clearly beyond these walls. 00:12:52.399 --> 00:12:56.240 But we can't leave all the work to them. 00:12:56.480 --> 00:13:00.320 And to put it another way, we can't let them have all the fun. 00:13:00.879 --> 00:13:07.679 Because we are all called not just to support Beyond the Walls projects, but to get out there ourselves. 00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:14.960 Whether that's at our local school, university, volunteer fire service, or local bush project. 00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:22.399 What are the ways that we can get integrated into our local community and build serving relationships? 00:13:23.279 --> 00:13:28.799 Today has been all about loving like Jesus and serving like him. 00:13:29.279 --> 00:13:36.159 We've seen that serving like Jesus means getting on our knees, getting our hands dirty, and getting out there. 00:13:36.559 --> 00:13:41.600 And Jesus is still asking us the question of the leper. 00:13:42.159 --> 00:13:44.320 Are we willing? 00:13:45.360 --> 00:13:54.559 As we conclude, I want to read you a quote from someone who is well acquainted with costly service, Mother Teresa. 00:13:55.120 --> 00:14:00.399 And she once famously said, The fruit of silence is prayer. 00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:03.840 The fruit of prayer is faith. 00:14:04.159 --> 00:14:06.320 The fruit of faith is love. 00:14:06.960 --> 00:14:13.600 And the fruit of love is service, and the fruit of service is peace. 00:14:14.240 --> 00:14:20.960 It's a beautiful and poetic quote, and uh it speaks to you more and more the more times that you read it over. 00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:28.559 But Mother Teresa was, by all accounts, an extremely strong, determined, and disciplined woman. 00:14:28.799 --> 00:14:39.360 Yet she knew that the source of her love and service did not start or originate with her, but was born from silence, prayer, and faith. 00:14:39.840 --> 00:14:47.440 If the prospect of serving like Jesus feels overwhelming to you, remember that it's not about what we can do in our strength. 00:14:47.600 --> 00:14:54.960 It's about joining with God and what he's doing and giving out from the love that we have received from him. 00:14:55.840 --> 00:15:10.960 So, what we're going to do now is take a minute in silence where you can simply receive God's love for yourself and ask him in return to give you a sense of his heart for someone or some area of our community. 00:15:11.840 --> 00:15:20.799 Let's listen together, receive God's love and
