More than 5 million people are waiting for an elective surgery in the English National Health Service, and it will require innovative arrangements and policies to address patient need. 

Dr Michael Anderson from the London School of Economics argues that the independent sector, in other words private providers, could be one piece of the puzzle to get a handle on waiting times.
