Anyways, in this episode, we are gonna be talking about the last major carnival of the year. Because by now things are preparing for a certain carnival that is happening in February, aka Trinidad Carnival. And we have a very interesting fun interview with somebody from St. Vincent. Miami Carnival Highlights
SPEAKER_08Alright, so for our first section, I don't think I'm gonna be talking a lot. Because I'm not the person who travels most of the times anymore. So we're gonna switch over to our correspondent from Miami in this case. Charms, how was Miami Carnival?
SPEAKER_00Hola! Hola, estoy aquí, estoy aquí.
SPEAKER_01Okay, okay, okay. I am here. Um, Miami Carnival, I had an absolute blast. I mean, I could sit here and talk all day long about it, but I'm not going to. Because you know me, when I'm talking about something I'm excited about or you know, telling a story, I chat too much. So just cut it short, the highlights for me. I DJ'd for the first time in Miami at a major um a major event, actually, an event called No Borders, and I was actually lucky to get that board, that, that book in. Yeah, it was like somebody gave me a fruit through ball. It was like Messi gave a through ball to I don't know, Sharnaldo, and then Sharnaldo scored.
SPEAKER_08Well, this is a great start of the story, but yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08So international DJ Charans, go on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, even though of course I DJed to the the the walls, the grass, the bar stuff, the trees. But it was it was still okay. Like I still was so happy to be there, and yeah, Barry Hype was there as well. So he heard me play when I finished playing, he gave me a high five, so that's a good job. So you know your girl, your girl is making movements, so yeah, that was that. My favorite, favourite, favourite, favourite fet of the whole period was SSS, of course. So big up Freeze International for that one. I had a time, absolute time. I left blue looking like a Smurf. Yeah, Mass was played, literally, so I had a great time. I did Juvet with Red Ants. The last time I did Juvet was with Gen X. I mean, Red Ants is probably one of the bigger juvet bands. I mean, I had fun. Um, my only thing was trying to get drinks was so long, like literally, they had the women were just so slow serving, and then I was with like two of my other friends, and one of them gave me some dollars to give as a tip.
SPEAKER_08Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01From that point, RKO. No way, my drinks were not taking long to come.
SPEAKER_08No way.
SPEAKER_01Literally, so you've already paid a hundred and somebody dollars for your Juve package. So for you to now get your drinks quickly or in a timely manner, you now have to tip the bargirls.
SPEAKER_08Every single time.
SPEAKER_01Crazy, right? Every single time.
SPEAKER_08So you're basically paying for your drinks still.
SPEAKER_01Literally.
SPEAKER_08Wow.
SPEAKER_01Crazy. Crazy.
SPEAKER_08That bar sounds very American, to be honest with you.
SPEAKER_01No, 100%. You know the tipping culture over there. And then even the drinks they were pouring was like it they just tasted like juice. So then obviously, once once I started tipping, they were making my drinks stronger. I was like, oh, okay. So um, yeah, exactly. Oh god. Okay. Oh my god. I just realized what you said.
SPEAKER_07Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, moving on swiftly.
SPEAKER_07Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01So that was that. Had a time at Juve. I didn't go to the you know, the costume day, didn't bother with that. The parade, they call it.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, I did the same thing I did last year. Went to the Jamaican restaurant. They were playing. But this time the DJ wasn't as good as the one last year, man. He wasn't playing as much soaker. He was playing like more reggae and dancing with a bit of soccer. Yeah, but I still enjoyed, you know, still enjoyed. It was fun.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, yeah, so that was Miami Carnival in a nutshell. I did a few extra critical activities. I went to a gun range, did a bit of shooting again. I went to the cinema.
SPEAKER_08You actually saw a movie.
SPEAKER_01I saw a movie.
SPEAKER_08What movie did you see?
SPEAKER_01Oh, what was it called again? It it's the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. It's got Tiana Taylor in it. Uh I can't remember the name of it.
SPEAKER_08I have no idea.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I can't remember the name of it, but you know, if you Googled Leonardo DiCaprio, Tiana Taylor, um, you will see the movie it is. And I'm not gonna tell you guys what the movie's about because I don't want to spoil it, but yeah, the movie was decent. I enjoyed it. It the cinema was one of those luxury ones where you got like leather seats and it reclines, and you can order food from your seat and they bring it to you, and all of that jazz. Yeah, it was one of those.
SPEAKER_08Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, oh yeah, I enjoyed that for sure. Mm-hmm. So next year we go again. So anybody who missed Miami Carnival this year, next year we are going. So link me, let's arrange it.

That was fun, and I also went on the booz and back and now boat ride, which was also very fun. So those are two notable parties. Yeah, I'm really struggling to speak today. I don't know why. Um yeah.
SPEAKER_08So your favourite pet was SSS? SS is my favourite. Yeah, what would be your second favourite?

SPEAKER_01Second favourite is probably booze and back and now.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, quite sure.
SPEAKER_01The sea, sea edition, because they had a land edition, the sea edition, and then but it's do you know what? Booz and back and all were naked boat crews, are probably like on the same level, but boozing back and out they had food, and I kept going up for more and more food because you know me, I'm a green cow. And it's a good food then, so I guess yeah, boozing back and out then, because of the food.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, makes sense.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. That was fun. Yeah, boy. That was fun, right? Yeah, I'm not gonna say anything more about Miami Carnival, but what I am going to talk about is brawlin.

And I also know that there's maybe, at least for the people who watch the video, there will be a little surprise in it as well. We are here with G to the E to the Geo. Welcome.

SPEAKER_08I don't think this story could have been any better than this. Um anyway, Gio, please, how explain something about yourself and how you got into Soka.
Brawlin Event Announcement
SPEAKER_06So I um my my correct name is Giovanni, G-I-O-V-A-W-N-I Collins, but I was given the name Gio from um like my secondary school. So I attended St. Joseph Convent, Maraca, and I also when I was a chef, I used to be a chef as well, I was given that name for short. So I continued the name, but I didn't keep the G I O, I kept the G E O. So I got on to Soka from the age of 10, I'll say. Oh wow because I started to perform for um my primary school, uh, which is the area I'm from Greg's primary. I was named Super D. I was named Super D. Um and I was start I came second that year, it was 2010. I was in um grade five, the fifth grade.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_06Fifth grade, so yeah, I started the soccer scene from the age of 10, but that was just the junior soccer scene. From all yeah, from now to the senior soccer scene, I actually started soccer in 2020.
SPEAKER_01Okay, COVID times.
SPEAKER_08Exactly. I was gonna say, was that was that because of COVID or was it uh another reason you started?
SPEAKER_06I think it was not it was because of COVID, but it was also a lot of people around me that know um what my capabilities are in terms of writing music ads. Okay, it was like more of a drag, yo bro, you gotta do this, you gotta do that. And um, nobody ain't singing, nobody ain't you know, so I just had to pick up something and just make my people proud.
SPEAKER_01Okay, nice. Well, you've done that for sure.
SPEAKER_06Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01For sure. Sorry. Sorry. That was my intuitive thought. That one, I do apologize. Let me just stop talking now. Continue.
SPEAKER_06It's you gotta you gotta give it the it's a very, very catchy um to say yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, for sure. For sure.
SPEAKER_08It is, and I just wanna say because 2020 you started, um, and I also saw by the way the first song is about corona. I I've done my research a bit. Okay, now I forgot the name, but uh, I think it was as if Corona was uh was a female, right?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, uh I I I gave the characteristics of a female, which I also place Ebola as her sister. So like when we catch Corona, she gai na lop Michola, Stan Shangana Soldier, I come to Benchy. Yeah, it was uh it was already loving the personification.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_06Well, music is up, music is about figures of speech, you know. So yeah, definitely poetry, so you have to write the poetry.
SPEAKER_01Definitely. I have a quick question. Yeah obviously, based on that first song that you wrote that has great personification, etc. Were you good at English growing up? So you know, in English when you're doing your writing, you're doing poetry and stuff like that, were you would you say like top of your class or you know, one of those that was very good when it came to writing?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I wasn't always good at uh at writing and composition and stuff like growing up from since um primary school. I used to actually like write and read for primary school coming up, okay. Secondary school, I was still doing the um D D D Junior Soka Monarchs and Calypsos, um, five stuff like that. So, you know, I kept it for a while, but I actually started to write from the age of 12.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow, okay.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so coming up like and then like falling in love with a bit of um English literature, you know. I used to like I don't know a lot of Shakespeare, but I used to just like the way how he puts his his words and he writes his books. And if you could implement that into music, that'd be great. But then you can't you can't use that type of um like he he he shall not do it, and you can't do that stage.
SPEAKER_08So you know I would love to to hear the combination in your uh your number one hit set about listen Shakespeare and so far is a lot of it's a lot of stuff you have to do.
SPEAKER_06It's like yeah, you know, like yeah, you have to come and say, okay, do you want the the people that listen to you to understand what you're saying? For example, I I'm a huge fan of like Vibes Cartel and Skilly Dell, and they are great lyricists, right?
SPEAKER_08They are amazing lyricists, and if you listen to them, they are like Shakespeare as well, but in their own way, so you know I mean so um how did you transition into actual like let's say professional soca? Because you started early. Um, is it just a matter of knowing the right people to get your studio time and you just start recording, or was it somebody who told you, listen, you and me we're going to the studio right now, we're gonna start this thing? Like what happened?
SPEAKER_06Actually, I started off in dance hall. I'm gonna be honest.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, this is a common theme with the people we talk to. They start off in dancehall and then go into soccer. But carry on, carry on.
Introducing Gio From St. Vincent
SPEAKER_06I'm still very good at dancehall, hence the lyrics part. But when I got off into soccer, it was my cousin from he's in America, so he called me and he was like, yo, I just buy a beat. And I was walking on my way going to work and I had in my headphone. Then I played the beat, and I started to at that time I used to freestyle a lot. So I just freestyle, I freestyle the entire song, and then I made like a little video so you could get like the the the the audio and me singing the song and I sent it back to him and then he was like, Oh, I just sent this amount of money to this specific studio, head there, you know, and uh I put it down and then that is how I had my four soccer song after the the guy already arranged and he put it out and everything. But I mean that for me from then to about until I did it slipping with that, I would say it was a bit of a challenge because I had to learn a lot coming from the I had to learn you know your soccer songs can't be too wordy, um you have to young people need to understand what to say, you have to look for more hooks and more punch like that. So so is not about being the most lyrical, it's about making a song is like a piece of art. You're making a song that every like most of your people can understand because you're not doing it for you.
SPEAKER_08Exactly.
SPEAKER_06So when you want to see your people understand and they go with it, then you know, yeah, that is the song they like, and you just play around that line because to me is like there's a formula, but it's not okay. There's no specific way of writing a hit, but there's also a formula that you have to follow. So, like I said, you can't make it too hardy, you can't sing it too fast, you have to listening, and that's it. And that's also advice for those who are upcoming like myself, and also because I got that knowledge from other people like my peers, my my management, some of my DJ friends, and them guys just letting me know, gee, you're good, but you need to tighten up here so and do this. That's what I did, and I know it started to pick up for me. So I just hope the youth that listening that listens to this podcast, they will take a note from this and go around it and see how they can come on it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_01Nice.
SPEAKER_08Um, so that actually brings us to your music. So what I noticed, and we're gonna we're gonna dive into that, but you are versatile, and that has maybe to do with you like discovering different sides of your capabilities. Um but our number three is well the first and only in this top three at least, that is quite groovy. And I I really see that you you nailed the groovy part anyway. Um gonna steal your uh your shine for a second, but I'm gonna introduce uh introduce number three. So on number three we have Give Me That Wine Day. So Yeah, I because I understand. It's also like I I listened because you know, I I I got to know you via our number one, then I heard our number two, and I realized actually I've I've heard this before. I'm trying not to spoil too much by the way, but uh you know, um I I I've gotten to know you via those type of you know songs, and then I was like doing my research and I listened to that song. I was like, oh okay, that's that's uh something else, and it's nice.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Definitely. So how how did that song come about? How did that uh got created?
SPEAKER_06Uh gimme that windy. Um it was I would say it started off in a little state of depression, to be honest, because I was I was home, I was like home alone, I'm not going anywhere. I usually don't go anywhere. Like if I'm not um performing at a party, I'm not giving I'm going to attend to probably like help someone I know. I I'll not really be going out and stuff. I'll rather spend that time with my son. You know? It was a time like, you know, you're just home, you haven't been out, it's like you're you're you're living like a cave, man, you're not feeling anything. And I was on the balcony and I was like, it's been a while, since I go and take a line. And then I was like, Because my manager sent me that rhythm, and I was I will give you the exact time. It was 12 a.m. in the morning when my manager he sent 10 rhythms, and that rhythm was second. So after the first rhythm, I was like, nah, and I played the second rhythm, I was like, okay, I'll go back to that. When I played the third rhythm, the second rhythm just gave me that go back.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
Early Start, Writing, And English Lit
SPEAKER_06And I started to like it's been a while. It seems like going to take it. I was like, this is smooth. I like this. Yeah. And it was giving me the at the moment that's how I was feeling. You know, there's a lot of people that feel like that. Because sometimes you work too hard and and you be out doing so much, and you hardly have like a self-alone time or to go out. Probably if you like to have some drinks, you take a drink, if you like to take a smoke. Is whatever you feel comfortable in doing. But I wrote that like from my my feeling, and also I was touching in base with other other feelings because remember, we can feel the universe because our spirit is connected. So I was like, this song has to come from within.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_06And that's came up with um give me that wind. Also, with when I went to studio with with the with the help of um my management Rashid, my brother Sora, um, my my sister Angie. Everybody knows Angie by now.
SPEAKER_01Um to eat up the curry raw that's like your actual blood sister.
SPEAKER_06No, that's we we just like family.
SPEAKER_01So we don't like family.
SPEAKER_06Because we still want camp at the end of the day. Definitely. I I look at people I'm close with as family.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah, makes sense.

Anyway, let me stop you know the chit chat. Let's get into it. Your song, Shellins on the Whale Oil Rhythm. Talk to us about that song. How did that song come about? How did you create it? Just just talk to us about it.
Crafting Soca: Simplicity And Hooks
SPEAKER_06Again, again, I will say that song came about when we had writing sessions, but that was never meant to be a rhythm. But that song again, that Surah built that rhythm, and then when OG and Rumlad had the well for C. Yeah, we was there, but we had no song on the rhythm. So we reached to this point, like yeah, we need to get this out the way, and then they wanted to make it a rhythm. Right? So we there, we there, we saying this is what's gonna happen. Shell, shell it, open the game. So when I said that, and then my manager, my manager doesn't he like the he's does less be like the um the the the man with all the ideas sometimes. So he gonna say, okay, if he don't like it, he's gonna let you know he don't like it. Same for the producer. We just honestly just be open, and then I was like, yeah, we like that. And then everybody like come together, management, make sure everything good. Then Surah does walkie magic, and then Surah, I was like, Surah, we need to collaborate. Like, we need what I mean, and then we just do, you know, right now we shall mean yeah, and we kinda energy. I might and we doing that song, I was trying to give it like a skinny, fabulous vibe, which I think yeah, which I think we nail as well, because skinny is the biggest soaker icon.
SPEAKER_08Okay, yep, yeah, and you did, and honestly, I actually was surprised he wasn't on that song because I actually like when I listened to the first time, I was like, huh? Is that skinny or is it like I was confused for a second there, yeah. But yeah, it's the energy, the energy on that on that rhythm in general, but also in shellings is uh Gio.
SPEAKER_06And there's the soccer assassin, and there's Gio. So for me, it's like the soccer assassin is more of the energy post and the the the the vibrant one. But Gio is like this smooth criminal, no. I just like be calm and just like dominate him like as much as I can.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I like I like the alter egos, yeah. Sometimes you need it.

SPEAKER_06That is just that is just Geo, that is just Gio.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_08Fair. Sure, so you wanna do the honors? For our number one.
SPEAKER_01So at number one, we have my favorite song of yours. Many people's favourite. This song gets rinsed in the UK. I'll tell you that for sure. Any soccer party you go to, you are almost guaranteed to hear this song in the UK. At number one, we have slipping.
SPEAKER_08What a tune.

SPEAKER_08Please.
SPEAKER_01How did that song come about?
SPEAKER_06That song came about um again with the honors of my manager and also my producer. When I went to the studio, I had a total different song. I never had that song.
SPEAKER_07Oh wow.
SPEAKER_06Oh they all they like the song, they like the song that I came with, but I was like, it was like, nah, I think I see you doing something different, and we could probably give that song to someone else. And when we was there, it was like sit down, see dumb. So like it was something that Surah said in one of his old songs. Ben, um, that is how you like it, baby. Ben dung, let me slip in. And then my manager took that and I was like, Ben dung, let me slip in, huh? Ben dung and he was just repeating, repeating, repeating. Ben dung, let me slip in, baby, ben dung, let me slip in. See dumb, see dumb, see dum, see dumb girls. You know what I mean? And then when I went in conic. Yeah, my my producer, which is also my brother, he said, I wanted to sing it this way, I wanted to put it that way, harmonize it, hey, harmonize. And he when when it done, it was like harmonize magic.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06That's so I don't I sometimes I just wonder, like, what did that song do to reach Tay? But that song just did a lot of work. Even speaking about that right now, I'm right in front of the place where the song video where we did the that shop that shop and all the flowers around it were properly. Exactly. But that's the street. If you can remember clearly, I came out of that that direction and fall down where the flowers were, and the female was walking, coming on and saying, and when she reached, she said, G, are you okay? So that that's where the the magic actually happened.
SPEAKER_00Nice exactly.
SPEAKER_08That's our little surprise because you showed me before the episodes or before we started recording. I love that little like uh you know, little bit. Um, and also because it is quite a a uh creative video as well. How did the video come to life?
SPEAKER_06That video came to life again. Um, my manager, he's like the jack of all trades when you look at it. Because he he does videography and he also directs, but while directing, we did a lot of improvising, so it wasn't like a written direct.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay, nice.
Track 2: Shellins And Whale Oil Riddim
SPEAKER_06It was more of more improvising and he just coming up with ideas on the spot. I inputting ideas, other people inputting ideas, and we take a from each and every one of our pays and we make it happen. Because work as a team and not trying to be oh um who is who, and we we're not on that. We just work as a team. If you came and give us an idea, and when we just put it on in the credits, yeah.
