Welcome And Carnival Plans
SPEAKER_05Welcome to the Soka Chronicles. Welcome to episode 55 of Soka Chronicles, the podcast that brings you everything Soka. I'm Arka Yo, and I'm digitally sitting next to the one and only Charns.
SPEAKER_03Yo, Yo. Yaga Yaga Yo.
SPEAKER_05We are here once again back for another episode. Yo. Uh yeah, Sharns, how are you doing? You feeling the. Yeah, you feeling the carnival season starting already?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, boy, even though I'm not involved, but you know, I'm still you know gearing up for Kropova and Saint Lucia, you know, gearing, gearing. It is.
SPEAKER_05Must be nice. You got your tickets already for all the events?
SPEAKER_03No, not all of them, because not all of them have been released yet. I haven't got anything for anything in Barbados. Nothing's gone on sale as far as I know. I have two FET tickets for St. Lucia so far.
SPEAKER_05Ooh, what are they?
SPEAKER_03Blocco, which is a juvet.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_03And a boat party called Speed, I think it's called. I hope. Something like that, yeah.
DJ Puffy Sparks A Bashment Debate
SPEAKER_05It's not a quick boat party because if they speed through the water, then might not be very fun. Okay, that's my dad joke of today. Moving on. We will be talking today about some comments made in social media with some uh some big names. Um see what our opinion is and yeah, talk about uh some more events that are upcoming, and we'll go from there. So for me to start off, is uh I've actually seen a couple of bigger names, including, for example, DJ Puffy, who is by the way doing an amazing job at the moment of promoting Soka on uh Instagram. He's putting these uh these shorts out, and uh they are cool. It's just like a little introduction to Soka, so I think he's doing his part. I love it. Um but I did get um how do you say it? Alarmed not alarmed. I was interested by one remark he made, and he was the only one that made that remark, by saying Barbados or Bayesian bashment was best, was at its peak at around 2018-2019. And it's like we we want to go back to that time. It's I understand what he's saying. I think it was definitely a peak year, you know, with with the stiffy songs, with I mean, there's such a big hit that we still play nowadays, right? Charnes? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's so good. But music needs to move, right? You can't just stuck stay stuck in one like type of rhythm. I mean, King Baba does that, but that's a different story.
SPEAKER_02June bomb rhythm.
SPEAKER_05You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02And a monkey, monkey, whatever rhythm.
SPEAKER_05Take a monkey out of his sleeve rhythm. Oh no wait, that's that's a Dutch joke. Can't make that one.
SPEAKER_02Oh god.
SPEAKER_05No, exactly. So I I I do believe, and it's not just just Bayesian uh music or Ahsoka, it's also like Trinity Ahsoka is it's jab as well, like things change over years, you know. I remember what was 2024 or 3, there was like a little uh kumpa session. I think we even recorded an episode on that as well. You know, it it it's it flows as music should. You can't just keep making the same thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And actually, today we have somebody uh on the scene on the island in Barbados who wants to uh add his two cents to it, right, Charles?
SPEAKER_03That's right.
SPEAKER_05Who do we have on the other side of the line?
SPEAKER_03We have a previous guest on the podcast. I think it was back in 2021, to be honest. That he was on there, but then that was like episode two or three or something like that. One of the earlier episodes, we have one of the baddest producers in BIM, my brother DJ Kai.
DJ Kai On Evolution And Support
SPEAKER_05I just want to add to that, like he has grown over those years to a massive international success. Big up respect and all that stuff for you, DJ Kai. Uh, yeah, let's uh listen to what uh he has to say on this topic.
Why DJs Replay The Same Hits
SPEAKER_01Okay, so in terms of the brain bash movement, I do agree that there needs to be a movement. Safety people demand the bash and soccer, then there is definitely should be more support for bashments. Me personally, I think Dijon Swoker on the hall needs more support, but it's sort of like um put to the side because cropover is not as exciting of a quote unquote carnival, it's really a festival, but in the context of summer carnivals, um I realize that cropover generally is not as exciting. There's of course external and internal issues that contribute to this. And while I don't think that bringing back bashment swalker would help that, I do agree that there needs to be more support of the PH and Swalker, not just Bashman Swalker, because Page and Swalker is very diverse, there's groovy, there's power, there's of course bashment, but um yeah, in general there needs to be more excitement around Cop Hover itself. I don't think there's as much excitement there as there is for like Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, etc. Um Yeah. The idea that about the all songs being better, etc. etc. etc. I mean at the end of the day, preference is preference. Um personally, I just on that um train of just let people create what they want to create, whether you like it or not, you know, again it's preference, everything wanna be for everyone. I personally think that Blashman Sorker should definitely evolve because if we do go back to the War Songs quote on quote, yeah, it will be really cool and soft, but what will happen originally is what will happen again. In my opinion, it's going to get pretty still, pretty repetitive. Um and once again, you'll be looking to evolve the music. And yeah, that's really it. The lyrics, the um how the lyrics are created to make the sound bashment hasn't really changed. The beats behind it have evolved, but you know, bashment swaker as called it. My guys if he is Beijing Swalker. And such. So yeah, that's pretty much like my thoughts.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so just to summarise, I I really think um like trini's trini music um also does it, and I think music needs to flow. Um, but yeah.
SPEAKER_03He attributes it to other things, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so you know, obviously DJs aren't playing the music. Is it because it doesn't resonate with them or what? Because there have been some massive tracks that have come out. I mean, look at Van Grime Rhythm. Obviously, that's more got like a zest kind of feel to it, yeah, which is different to you know the standard bash Matsoka, but look how popular that that's got over a million plays.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, true. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03And that is still in pretty much solid rotation in different parts of the world that I go to. Do you know what I mean? Even Pressure Rhythm is pretty popular. So there have been some bash Matsoka tunes that have come out. Obviously, they don't sound like the old ones.
SPEAKER_05I mean, they released a remake of Bim, BAM, BIM.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, oh listen, that was a time. Probably over 2016 was a time, but we're not even gonna go into that. Um they re-released the scab out rhythm. So, yeah, so you know, scabital, no no no scabitot, no, no, no, and DB and a fair, no, no, no, Dibby, yeah. So um that one, obviously they've got scab out rhythm too, so they try to bring that back, but even that rhythm there, that's obviously the same rhythm as before, but I don't really hear that in rotation, I'm not gonna lie to you. I more hear the old ones, the old ones.
SPEAKER_05Well, that's the scab out rhythm you played, yeah. There's no need to keep recreating something that has already been created. Like exactly who who knows what people are going to be creating at some point and how much better that is, or worse, it could both be that, but no, definitely you gotta keep inventing yourself.
SPEAKER_03No, 100%. And obviously, if I'm hearing Bash Mitsoka played in the parties, it's always the old stuff that they play. I can't lie to you. So obviously, I hear what they're saying. There's there's a there's a like they have a point, you know, bash Matsoka was at its peak back then. I'd say, yeah, between well, I'd say up to what 2018, 19? Wait, when was V Neck rhythm released? I think that was 2019, though.
SPEAKER_05That was 18, I think. Yeah, because 18, yeah, somewhere there anyway.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, but those rhythms back then they are tough. And when I do play Bashment Soker, I always include those older rhythms, but then I also do include the newer stuff as well, you know what I mean? Makes sense. But I feel like DJs are more focused on playing what's super popular, so they're fighting to play Jap, they're fighting to play bouillon, you know what I mean? Or they're fighting to play the new um the new Trini rhythms like Party and those sort of songs there, you know what I mean? So it's like within that fight, bash Matsoka, or just even Bayesian music in general just gets lost because it's obviously Barbados doesn't just have Bash Matsoka, obviously that's unique to Barbados, but they have some wicked groovy songs, do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05Wicked, and that's been excelling last year to be honest.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, for sure. And obviously, like you said, that's why I decided to start Trident London and started doing Bashman or not Bashment Soka parties, but Beijon Soka parties in London to just give Beijing soaker that pedestal that it needs, that spotlight. And I feel like from that it's growing because now I'm starting to hear slowly, slowly, some DJs who weren't maybe playing the the Beige and Soka before starting to play it now.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03But I won't hear it in prime time sets though. Yeah, it will always be like sort of the warm-up sets.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, makes sense. Yeah, maybe uh I think you're on on the right track, right? Um just to come back on your point of um like playing the new music wins from the old music. I always think it's a balance because like well, we have a big example here now. We had uh Sound of Soka in the Netherlands, uh, a new formula playing of the Soka vs. Dennisal group that we had uh for the last uh I don't know ten years or more, probably. Um what I got tired of from uh Soka vs. Dennisol was that they will always play the same old uh soca. Yeah uh the amount of times I've heard wet it up is like I don't like the song anymore. Wet it's all I've heard it so many times. I'm tired. So this new new thing, I was hoping for some some fresh, you know, up-to-date Soka to be played. Wasn't the case. They did they did play the the very famous jab ones, you know, the uh jab decisions. Obviously, you have to play that, I guess.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_05They also play Wet It Up. Yeah, I always think it's about balance. So, you know, even in even in your event, you're not gonna play the same set every time you have an event, right? You're gonna switch it up. You're gonna there's so much music. I know a lot of DJs say this, but there is so much good soca, there is never a need to repeat songs to to play the same set as before. There's so much, you know, just listen and learn. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03No, definitely, but yeah, but we've had this conversation before where DJs want the crowd to be hype, to be jumping up, hands in the air, all of that stuff. And obviously, not all soaker music, all not all soaker music is gonna make them have their hands in the air. So DJs will look at that and think, oh, you know, the crowd's not jumping up or down, they're not, they ain't got their hands in the air, oh I'm not doing a good job. So I don't care that the DJ before me played hard fed, I'm gonna play it. And I don't care that the DJ before me played played Jab Decisions, I'm gonna play it. I don't care that they played burial, I'm gonna play it. Do you know what I mean? Because they just want that. It's like crap.
SPEAKER_05They want to repeat the, yeah, exactly. They want to repeat it. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03They're addicted to just getting that crowd response. But you can play a banging groovy song and you can take the the lyrics out and you can hear that crowd singing at the top of their lungs. Yep, you're still doing a fantastic job just because they're not jumping up and down. Do you know what I mean? But a lot of DJs don't see that, you know, and that's the issue that we have these days, which is why a lot of these soaker parties you're just hearing the same songs all the time, and then also they're booking the same DJs all the time as well.
SPEAKER_05You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03So it's like it's a vicious cycle, exactly.
SPEAKER_05Change it up, book somebody different, and exactly, exactly, because it will automatically bring a whole new set to you.
SPEAKER_03Exactly.
SPEAKER_05I understand it's it's you know, why change the winning team? I get it. And if if you're going for stability, then that makes sense, but yeah, no innovation with stability is what I would like to say.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I get it, I get it. And the thing is, people who go to these soccer parties, the majority of them are actual soccer lovers, so they will know music unless you have a crowd of like you know, really young people. Yeah, then you know, yeah, you got problems. But for the most part, if it's a soccer party, people will know music for sure. So you can dig into the pouch a bit, mix up those with the more popular stuff or whatever. Do you know what I mean? And trust me, people will leave there saying, rah, I haven't heard this song in ages. Oh man, I had a time, blah blah blah blah. There's a formula to it, man.
SPEAKER_05Yep, exactly. Yep, no, yeah, I I don't think there's much more to say than that. It's it's all about balance, it's about trying new things, it's about not being afraid to find to try to find that balance anyway. And uh, yeah, man. There's some there's some names though that are really trying, like yourself, Sharon. Uh there's there's a group of people that that are really able to uh to find that balance, you know, during while I play.
DJs Who Champion Bajan Soca
SPEAKER_03No, for sure. So for me, I'm gonna mention a few names, but obviously, this is the UK scene that I'm mentioning. So we've got Lex Lion. Obviously, Lex Lion is one of our resident DJs for Brawlin.
SPEAKER_06Yep.
SPEAKER_03And he wherever he plays, just know that you're gonna hear Bashman Soker. Yeah, like there's no ifs, no buts, you're hearing Bashman Soker in Lex's set because he reps hard for Bim. Like hard, hard, hard. You know what I mean? And he even started making um content where he was um bringing a bringing a Bashman Soker tune back. So I know one of them was like Yogi rhythm, which I hadn't heard in years, I forgot about that rhythm. Um and I was like, damn, I don't even have this on my laptop. Straight away, I downloaded that rhythm.
SPEAKER_05Love that.
SPEAKER_03So do you see what I mean? Yeah, so Lex is doing his part, he's been doing it. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05Yep, yep, yep.
SPEAKER_03AON Dynasty, been doing it. Do you know what I mean? Um Armani as well. I give Armani this. That man will always play Bajan Soga in it in his his sets. Yeah, he'll play a wicked Bajan groovy set, and it will be songs that I've not heard for time. It might be from like, I don't know, Cropover 2022 or whatever. Tunes that you won't hear unless a Bajan DJ plays him. Do you know what I mean? And I love it, absolutely love it. Super Nitro is not even Bajan, but recently he's an honorary Bajan now. Mate, he's he is an honorary, just like you, he's an honorary Bajan. That man has been pushing Bajan music, pushing, pushing, pushing, and I'm here for it. And the thing is with him, because he is such a popular DJ and he's such a uh well-booked DJ, he rarely you'll hear him playing a warm-up warm-up set. So when he's playing Bashman Soka or Bajan music, it's prime time. People are hearing it. Do you know what I mean? And obviously, because he is good hosting, he can give the songs life. Do you know what I mean? So I repeat that really respect.
SPEAKER_05That's another must-have skill, basically, yeah.
SPEAKER_03No, definitely, definitely. And obviously, we've got like DJ Pooley as well, Shep Beats, you know, we've got other DJs that will, you know, push the Beijing soaker, but it's not enough. We need more than just the Beijing DJs pushing it, we need the non-Bajans, especially like the DJs that are most booked.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_03Because then it's like if all of us are working together to push the genre, it has no choice but to rise. You know what I mean? It's a group effort at the end of the day.
SPEAKER_05Facts, facts. Yep. And to add, soca should not be a seasonal thing.
SPEAKER_03Oh god, no, it shouldn't be. It really shouldn't be. And we all shut up though. Yeah, we literally have this discussion like regularly.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_03Like it shouldn't be seasonal. No, but we I don't know, we need to work on that.
SPEAKER_05Yep, yep, yep, yep. And facts, and that's that's you know, brawling helps with that, for example. It it it just gives opportunities for DJs to play Soka outside of the season. So uh yeah, there's always something good from that.
SPEAKER_03We need more though, especially in the UK. We need more.
SPEAKER_05Obviously, in Barbados, I mean, hello.
Building Soca Parties In Netherlands
SPEAKER_03We don't even need to mention Barbados, but outside of BIM.
SPEAKER_05Can we talk about the Netherlands, please?
SPEAKER_03Puddham.
SPEAKER_05Can can I have more than one fat every five months in the Netherlands, please? Yeah, that would be nice.
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_05And now I'm happy with just soca. Any soaker.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, literally, literally. I think in the Netherlands, every other month would be good.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, uh every month would also be good, but yeah, the other month would be uh stable.
SPEAKER_03No, definitely, and then obviously grow, grow, grow, grow, like how um SVD grew, so dancehall, and then I don't know if the demand is there for it, then have something monthly.
SPEAKER_05You know, I I know that SVD was huge, they did uh like a bigger air uh bigger uh venue at some point as well. Um, I would be happy. So I know of a couple smaller vests. This is now very Dutch uh party scene oriented, by the way, and I apologize for the listers that are not interested in it, but as a you know, as an interesting view, um so we had some very successful, you know, um dance hall type of parties that were small, so you had like a venue for um 100-150 people, that's it. Uh not more, so at some point it's full, and you just you know, just too bad, you you too late. Um, but it was always a vibe. And they used to play like one or two Soko songs, it would always be uh Femme, of course, but you know, they tried. Oh yeah, once yeah, exactly. But it's it it always like I I I would like to see a Soka Fed like that, you know, like a small, um you know, a hundred people maybe tops, and that just and then grow from there, you know. If if there's a lot of people there, just do it twice a month instead of once every two months. It's it's like you know, grow grow in in in um amount of fets instead of in size of venue.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I I agree, but then why don't we we've we've had this discussion since if if I had the time, the investment money and the energy at this moment, then uh it would have been so.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_03I mean if we could, I reckon it it would grow, bro. I'm telling you that it would grow.
SPEAKER_05I I I want I there's few things that I rather have than that. There's definitely some things, but there's a short list, and this is on the top of things that I really would like to uh see happen, but uh it's uh it's one of those things at the moment, no, but maybe in the future.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's still something we can think about because who knows? We may get an opportunity. I don't know, a venue might reach out to us and say, Boom, you don't need to pay for the venue, just bring your people. Exactly. Why not? Exactly, you know what I mean? So Let's just keep an open mind.
unknownExactly.
SPEAKER_03See what might happen.
SPEAKER_05What did I just say earlier this episode? Being stable does not uh allow for uh innovation, so maybe we should be less stable. Let's go. Just don't be reckless and homeless and unemployed. I sold my house, but there's an event for 10 people now.
SPEAKER_06Oh sadness.
Song Of The Month Throwback
SPEAKER_05Well, I think that was the main thing I wanted to discuss this episode. Um but before we move on, we do need to talk about a song of the month charns.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Song of the months. The months.
SPEAKER_05I do feel it's time for a little something different. Normally we find the newest song and we we pick a song from there and we we put it on. There's plenty of new good music, by the way, so don't be discouraged to look for it on YouTube or whatever. But as we've been discussing bashments, I think we should play our favourite bashment song ever.
SPEAKER_03Well, well, favorite song ever. I have so many favourites, so I'm not gonna say this is my favourite song ever. Ever. I can't even speak now, Arkyo.
SPEAKER_06What's going on?
SPEAKER_03I will say that this song is up there. If you wanna see Sharms spinning pooch, as we say in in Barbados, if you wanna see me walking up stink, play this song, and yeah, it's a rap. It's a rap.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_03Especially if I have alcohol in my system. It's a rap.
SPEAKER_05I've seen it. I've seen it happen.
SPEAKER_03Oh god. Oh god. Yeah, we've matched up a few boat parties. I'll tell you all.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03In our Haiti.
SPEAKER_05Exactly. Exactly.
SPEAKER_03The song that we're going with this month, the song of the month, as Arkeo said, we're taking it back to when people say to when people say Bashman Soker was, you know, in its prime.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_03This song that we've chosen is by a previous guest that we have on the show.
SPEAKER_05Definitely.
SPEAKER_03One that, you know, said something that was not very nice to chance. You look like you're beat men.
SPEAKER_02Violation. Violation. If you've watched previous episodes, you'll know who we're talking about.
SPEAKER_03But if you haven't, the artist that we're going with this month. So it's Stiffy. And the song is Tip and Benova.
SPEAKER_05Yes, Caution Tape Rhythm. In 2020, this was released. 2020? Did I say 2020? Chee! Some bread to stay in Barbados. For listeners listening, this song is recorded um while both of us are a bit sleepy. Clearly, I'm a bit more sleepy than Sharms, but here we are, it's not a competition. This was released in 2017. Thank you very much. And I just want to stop and listen to this song, please, Sharnes. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, let's go.
SPEAKER_04This is the song of the month. Plug into hoop plug into hoop plug into the phone.
SPEAKER_05We are back in the studio and it's it's getting hot in the studio. We had to bust a little wine on this tune. Cheese.
SPEAKER_03Bus a wine.
SPEAKER_05That was uh that was a banger back then. It's a banger now. Bruh.
SPEAKER_03This tune is still in constant rotation in my sets. I can't lie to you.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, 100% makes sense.
SPEAKER_03Big tune.
SPEAKER_05The energy is there. There you go. You don't need more.
SPEAKER_03Come on. Come on. As soon as I fling this song on, guaranteed to activate the ladies' waistlines. Guaranteed. And if it doesn't, it's because their knees are hurting. Or it's because they don't know soaker.
SPEAKER_05Exactly. There we go. There we go. Yeah man. I do think it's time to um close our little uh talk about bashmentsoka little segments.
SPEAKER_03Can you stop smalling up the thing, RKO? I thought we were done with this. I thought we left this in 2025.
Upcoming Carnivals And Key Dates
SPEAKER_05Yeah, fair, fair. So I think we should close out our huge segment on Barbados uh Bashman Soka, and we'll move on to our extremely large segment on reminding everybody what carnivores are due in the coming months. For goodness sake! Your wish is my command, sir, that's no problem.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay, Genie.
SPEAKER_05So we have first up Jamaica, the 12th of April. Uh the big parade day, of course, there's more fets around that date. Um actually, very quickly, I saw a nice little uh remix from um Classic Frescobar with his song Fuck, what was it again? Dance Up uh with his song Dance Up. I think uh Elephant Man and somebody else was on that as well. So he's giving a little Jamaican vibe. Yeah, man, that's uh that's a good tune to check out. So epic remix as well. Sorry, just had to uh drop that in. Other than that, we have on 18th of April we have brawlin, and then St. Marta Carnival is the 30th of April, of course. So uh at least for the month April we've got to be. Go on, Charles, go on.
SPEAKER_03Are we not talking about carnivals?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah. So why have you mentioned we're talking about huge events in the world?
SPEAKER_03I see. I see what you did there. Brawling 18th of April in London town.
SPEAKER_05There we go. But it's a huge event, you know?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I see what you did there.
SPEAKER_05There we go, there we go. So at least everybody's caught up with what's happening next month. Be sure to be there, be square. Uh I will be I'll be square for three out of three of those events, but uh, you know, I'm uh I'm I'm gathering strength for you know a future session or whatever you want to call it. So um, I hope for everyone who's going, it's gonna be epic. And I'm of course it's gonna be epic.
Brawlin Ticket Warning And Hype
SPEAKER_03Yeah, for sure, but people Brawling April the 18th. Remember the last Brawling that we had for independence in November completely sold out three days before the event. From the that day it sold out right up until the day of the event, I had people begging, Seans, please, please, man. You can't just just sell one more ticket, like no tickets, no, because I've been promoting this bumberclot event, and I'm gonna swear, for eight weeks, and you wanna come to me at the end? Oh, Shans, what are you stuttering for? Huh? No, no more tickets, yeah. So, people, I'm telling you lot, yeah, it's a few more weeks left until this edition of Brawlin. If you are coming, get your tickets from early. None of this last minute business because it's jarring. It's jarring, and I swear I want to switch off my phone, but obviously, for obvious reasons I can't because I need to be in constant communication with the DJs. I don't know, the the venue owner might want to contact me on the day and all that stuff, so I can't even switch off my phone.
SPEAKER_05But all I'm saying is, I might actually call I also want to call to just get a video image of what's happening, but you know, exactly.
SPEAKER_03Exactly, exactly. So switching switching off my phone would not be very uh practical. So, people, just get your tickets from early so you ain't gotta beg me later on down the line. I beg. April 18th, head to the link www.tridentldn.com. I almost said code.uk, but it's not.com. So that is t-r-i-d-e-n-t-l-dn.com. I've got people flying over from the Netherlands. I've got people flying over from Switzerland, I got people coming down from Leicester, Birmingham, Manchester. Listen.
