As a Christian, it’s challenging to dress modestly in a culture that pressures you to be extra. The world says, “Look hot to get noticed.” But is being “hot” really the goal? Clothes are never just clothes—they reflect what we value. Christian modesty isn’t about rules—it’s honoring God above trends.

Hanaya misses Hiroto. She senses he’s still upset and avoiding her. One afternoon, fresh from a run, she spots him playing basketball. She lingers behind a tree, quietly watching. Yeona, back from a modeling gig, notices Hanaya and sneaks up mischievously, teasing her to spill who she’s been staring at. She plots a plan to help Hanaya—suggesting a hot look to win the attention of the boy she likes. Their playful banter soon shifts into a deeper talk about modesty, heartbreak, and eternity-minded choices.

John Piper:

Don’t just ask, “What’s wrong with it?” about your music, your movies, your clothing, your parties, or your habits. Don’t just ask, “Is it a sin?”—that’s the lowest bar you can set for your life.

Instead, ask: “Does this help me run? Does it help me run with all my focus, energy, and love for God? Or does it trip me up when I’m trying to grow in patience, kindness, gentleness, love, holiness, purity, and self-control?”

Don’t aim for just avoiding sin. Don’t settle for the minimal standard. Aim for the highest one. Take hold of the marathon that is your life and run it with purpose. Shape every choice—how you train, eat, think, and dress to be the most God-exalting runner you can be. Finish the race spent for His glory.

SPEAKER_01

Lord, I miss him. I hope he's doing okay.

SPEAKER_03

Hello, Miss Secret Lover. Oh, Yona, you scared me. Oops, didn't mean to. I was just passing by and couldn't resist sneaking up on a naughty girl hiding in plain sight. So who's got your eyes wandering? Hey, I I was just catching my breath after a run. Oh yeah. Catching your breath and catching glances. You are Hannah, right? Hanaya. Ah, close enough, too many names in my head. I'll get there. It's fine. You look really pretty, by the way. Thanks. But compliments won't get you off the hook. You're not escaping that easily. Spill it. Who's got your heart racing?

SPEAKER_01

We barely know each other. I'm not spilling my secrets yet.

SPEAKER_03

Then today's the start. Day one of the Yonah Hanaya Alliance. In ten years, we'll laugh about this exact moment.

SPEAKER_01

Ha ha ha ha. Okay. But I can't tell you who he is. Not yet. He's close yet far. And lately, he's been upset with me.

SPEAKER_03

Seriously? What's up with people here hiding their love lives? This school's a spy agency. Hirotho won't reveal his crush, you won't reveal yours. Is there some kind of no-romance confession club I don't know about? Maybe it's just some of us.

SPEAKER_00

Hmm.

SPEAKER_03

So this mystery boy is mad at you? You know, we can fix that. All it takes is showing him a side of you he's never seen. Let's rattle his imagination, melt his heart, make him daydream.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

How? He sees you in your school uniform all the time, right? Yeah. Are you on Instagram? No, not yet. School forum? Group chat? Yeah. Perfect. Friday I'll bring some outfits. You try them. I take pictures, you post them in the school group, or I will. Once he sees those pics, his heart will melt like vanilla ice cream in the summer sun. Look, these are some of my shoots.

SPEAKER_01

Uh, you know, it's okay. Thanks. I don't think I need to go that far. I miss him, sure, but I'm not desperate. It's not like my life feels empty without him.

SPEAKER_03

Hey, Tinkerbell, this world's a little wild. While you're peeking at him from the bushes, tossing longing glances, someone else will swoop in. You gotta fight for love, senorita. Look at this outfit. What about this skirt? It's pretty, but too short. And that top, bare shoulders? Exactly. You'd be the talk of the school for days. The hottest girl in school. But I don't want to be the hottest girl in school. You're too modest. Oh come on. Don't be shy. I thought girls here hike their skirts all the time.

SPEAKER_01

Not all girls. I did a few times, but I stopped.

SPEAKER_03

This one isn't vulgar. Just a little daring. Just a little sexy enough to make him go crazy.

SPEAKER_01

See, Yona, I don't need to try so hard. And not this way. He already likes me. Wait, really?

SPEAKER_03

As you are?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I just haven't responded to his confession.

SPEAKER_03

Why?

SPEAKER_01

I'm waiting. I have my reasons.

SPEAKER_03

Hmm. Sounds like you're kinda afraid to let people in. It can feel safer to keep others at arm's length to avoid the risk of being hurt. When you do that, you miss out on much of the beauty of life. Still, I get it. No rush though. Don't force yourself to come to a conclusion. You don't have to figure it all out right now. Time has a way of softening fears and bringing clarity. But be open to trying new things, even if they push you outside your comfort zone. Whether that's a bold change in how you look, dress, or simply carry yourself. It might feel weird at first, but you'll get used to it. And who knows, you might find a version of yourself you really like.

SPEAKER_01

I'm cautious. I can't just let anyone into my life too quickly. And about how I dress, it's not that I'm unwilling to try something new. For you, this might feel totally normal, especially if you're in modeling or an industry where looks are everything. Using sex appeal to sell, catering to beauty standards, even aiming for a certain look to make money. I get that's how the world works. But just because it's normal in our culture doesn't mean God is cool with it. I know, different people see style and fashion in different ways, and I respect that. For me, as a Christian, the Bible is God's word. It shapes how I want to live, and what I feel honors God. One thing it teaches is to avoid even the appearance of anything sexual. So, while I understand how a little sexy can seem harmless or even normal, for me it's not something I want to lean into. I feel most at peace and true to myself when I dress with simplicity and grace, still feminine and elegant, but without being flashy or revealing.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, I understand, but can I ask, why did you then hike your skirt up for a while?

SPEAKER_01

I did it under pressure, just to fit in. But it didn't feel like me. Hated it. So I stopped. One time I was adjusting my skirt to make it shorter, and my mom noticed.

SPEAKER_02

She said, Sweetheart, you've stopped being you. Don't lose your innocence and shyness. It's precious. Protect it. A little mystery lasts longer than flashy attention. You know, who really stands out? It's the girl who doesn't showcase her body to everyone she meets. That's the girl that the right guy, the one worth waiting for, is going to go after. He will see it, notice it, and love it. If you show a ton of skin, there's no mystery at all anymore. It's a big red flag for the right kind of guy you actually want to attract. If you're in a respectful, nice skirt and an attractive cute top, you can still be trendy and stylish without crossing the line. A little mystery goes a long way. That subtle approach will turn a guy's head for far longer than a quick glance and with a want to really know you better and not just look at you. But here's the bigger thing. Settle this. Why do you exist? Nail it, get it, settle it. If it takes a year, settle it. It's the most important thing you'll ever settle. Why do I exist? The answer shapes everything. The truth is, you exist. Indeed, the universe exists. To worship God, your creator, your heavenly Father, so that everything would be done in His way, for His glory. Hanaya, you were created to make God look great. You exist to glorify Him, not yourself.

SPEAKER_01

So, that's how I want to live. I want to live in a way that makes God look great in my life. That's my goal, in my choices, my relationships, my clothes, my career, everything.

SPEAKER_03

Whoa, I already love your mom. I seriously want to meet her someday. Maybe hang out with her and talk about life. And you know, you're kind of giving me major Herotho flashbacks right now. Like, the first day I saw him here, he just launched into God, sin, eternity, all that deep stuff. And I was like, hello? Yes, we have been in touch, we've texted before, but this is literally the first time we've seen each other in years. Maybe he was just looking out for me, because he knows the industry I'm stepping into can be kind of wild. And hey, I totally respect your faith and how real and strong you are about it. But isn't it possible for someone dressed like a saint to still be plotting the villain arc in her head? I mean, don't you think even someone dressed super modestly can still have a not-so pure heart or mind? And what about Christian girls in sports like swimming, gymnastics, track, or volleyball? Some of the uniforms can be pretty revealing. Aren't they dishonoring God by competing in these sports?

SPEAKER_01

Wow, great questions, Yona. You know, maybe one day you'll understand what Hirotho meant, but only if you let your beliefs be challenged. The way we're raised in family, culture, or religion can blind us to what's right in front of us. We can hear something and still not hear it. You only dig deeper when someone shakes the ground you stand on. About your questions. Yes, it's true. Modesty isn't just about clothes. Modesty and purity are issues of the heart. It's about your whole attitude. Dressing modestly is only one aspect. I can have mixed motives. I can also do the right thing for the wrong reason. God sees not just what I do, but why I do it. He sees the heart, not just the clothes. Purity begins in the heart. In competitive sports, the focus is on performance, not on showing off your body. Most girls aren't deliberately trying to be suggestive to get attention. The uniforms are designed to help athletes move and perform at their best, not to make a fashion statement. But for some Christian girls, it can still feel tricky. If the outfit feels too revealing, uncomfortable, or even unsafe, that's a real struggle. Some might feel like they should speak up, but often athletes don't get much say in what they wear for competitions. Here's what I think. They don't need to feel guilty. It's the intention behind actions. What really matters is their heart. Are they competing with integrity, kindness, and giving their best for God's glory? Their identity isn't tied to a uniform. They are saved by grace, rather than what they do or don't do, or what they wear or don't wear.

SPEAKER_03

Wow, Hanaya, your answers are seriously on point, packed with good stuff. I think I get what you're saying. But now I'm wondering, what about modeling? Like, does God actually have an issue with it?

SPEAKER_01

See, whatever path we choose, acting, modeling, music, anything, each comes with its own level of moral responsibility. Some professions hold greater power to shape people's hearts and minds. God will hold us accountable for the truth we knew in our conscience, yet chose to ignore. We like to think we can get away with anything, but people, especially younger ones, are always watching and listening. With everything we say and do, we're planting seeds in their lives. The question is, what kind of seeds? Beauty is a gift, but it's not a God. Same with talent, they're not for worshiping ourselves, and we can't serve God on our terms. It doesn't work that way. You can't live for fame, money, and God at the same time. If God is really first in our lives, we'll draw lines about the projects we take and how we present ourselves. Sometimes, honoring God means saying no to things the world cheers for: a certain role, a drama scene, a photo shoot, a brand deal. That can mean losing money, attention, and applause. God's not against success. It's about who's really on the throne of our hearts. One day, every hidden choice will matter. In hindsight, looking back from eternity, the things we traded for eternal rewards will feel so small and cheap compared to what we lost. Life goes fast, but God's rewards last forever, beyond anything we could dream or imagine. The Bible says no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him. But if eternity isn't real to you yet, the world's quick rewards will always feel more urgent and important. I often hear this line in K-dramas: live a long, healthy life. But the truth is, it's not the length of life that matters. It's the depth. It's not how long we live, but how we live. If you don't know God yet, some of this might not make sense. But once you truly know him, everything changes.

SPEAKER_03

Hmm. You've got my mind doing backflips. You know what? I think I'm gonna bug Hirotho about this. I've got a few questions for him. And I'm pretty sure you and I are gonna be talking about this more. So you two were close? Oh yeah, we were tight back then. Hirotho was basically my lifeline in math and physics. I hated those subjects. He totally lost patience with me a bunch of times. But he still cared. One day I forgot my physics book. Our teacher was scary strict, and if you didn't have it, the punishment was next level embarrassing. I was freaking out. Then, when the teacher told everyone without the book to stand, Hirotho sees my panicked face, slides his book over to me, and stands up himself. Took the hit without even blinking. I'm never forgetting that move. Wow, total hero move. Yep. Okay, back to business. If hottest is off the table, how about cutest? Just for fun? I get it, he's into you. But like I said, when he's annoyed or frustrated, someone else could totally catch his eye. Or maybe he'll stay loyal. We don't know. Either way, no harm in giving him something new to look at. Come on, it'll be fun. Check out this dress.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, yeah, this one is cute. And the pose? The expression? I love it, but will it work on me?

SPEAKER_03

Girl, you're gonna crush it. We'll tweak it a little, snap a few picks, and pick the best one.

SPEAKER_00

Alright, sounds fun.

SPEAKER_03

So is he your first love? Yeah. What about you? Do you have someone you like? Yep, I'll keep mine a secret too. Mystery makes life interesting. He likes someone else, but they're not together yet, so I'm still in the game. Do you really think we're gonna get our happy ever after? What happens if things don't go the way you're hoping? Honestly, I think it would crush me. I can't stand the thought of anyone seeing me when I'm falling apart.

SPEAKER_01

Hmm. I'm not sure how I'll feel. Maybe sad for a week, maybe too, maybe numb. Maybe breaking inside while looking fine outside. I don't know, but I'll move on. I'll live on. I just know it's not healthy to bottle everything up. It's not weakness to hurt. Every heart gets heavy, every mind gets foggy sometimes. We don't need to put on a show. We don't have to fake a smile or act like we're okay when we're not. It's okay to be real, to take a deep breath, to face our wounds head on, to talk to someone, to talk to God. Life is bigger than heartbreak. There's more to our story. There are still chapters waiting to be written. Jesus said, do not worry about tomorrow. So worrying is wasted energy. Some things are out of my control. And learning to hold expectations loosely. If my story doesn't go the way I hoped, God's still writing the melody. And when God writes your music, even sad notes make a beautiful song. When our little story gets woven into his big one, the music will be more beautiful than we can imagine. Even heartbreak becomes part of a bigger, more beautiful song. You know, we cannot avoid pain, but we can refuse to let it blind us to what really matters. We must chase a much bigger happy ever after. Our prime years fly by. We're all like grass. And all our beauty, love, and romance are like flowers of the grass that bloom for a moment. The grass dries up, the flowers fade. But those who do, the will of God, they shine like stars forever.

SPEAKER_03

Wow, your words are like the wind through the trees, refreshing, inspiring, and filled with quiet strength. You're full of surprises, Hanaya.
