Pastor Aaron Lage

This exploration of 1 Corinthians 1:1-9 challenges us to reconsider what it truly means to live with gratitude. We often treat thankfulness as a fleeting emotion—something we wait to feel rather than something we actively choose. But Paul's letter to the deeply flawed Corinthian church reveals a different approach: gratitude as a learned character trait, a posture we adopt regardless of circumstances. The Corinthians were quarreling, comparing spiritual gifts, and dealing with serious moral failures, yet Paul begins by saying he always thanks God for them. This isn't denial of their problems—he's about to address those head-on. Instead, it's a deliberate positioning that transforms how we view ourselves and others. When we focus constantly on our failures, we become paralyzed by negativity. But when we shift our focus to what God has done—His grace, His enrichment of our lives, His faithfulness—we discover an objective foundation for thankfulness that doesn't depend on our performance or feelings. The invitation here is revolutionary: stop cataloging your failures each night and start rehearsing God's faithfulness instead.
