And.

00:00:11 Speaker 2

Hi everyone.

00:00:12 Speaker 2

Welcome back to another episode of Senior Living Today.

00:00:15 Speaker 2

Today we have a special episode for our listeners.

00:00:17 Speaker 2

We've been collecting questions from you all season long, and today we are here to answer them.

00:00:22 Speaker 2

So to answer your questions, we brought together a panel of experts in the senior living industry and I'm very pleased to introduce Samantha Floyd.

00:00:30 Speaker 2

The director for the Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center, Melissa Todd.

00:00:34 Speaker 2

Corporate sales manager for the Ohio Masonic Communities and Michelle Whittaker.

00:00:38 Speaker 2

Member experience director for Western Reserve Masonic Community.

00:00:41 Speaker 2

Ladies, thank you so much for joining me today.

00:00:45 Speaker 4

Thank you for having us back.

00:00:46 Speaker 4

It's always a fun time, absolutely.

00:00:49 Speaker 2

So our questions for today are in no specific order and our panel is going to be answering the ones that fit their specific skill set the best.

00:00:57 Speaker 2

So Michelle, we're going to actually kick it off with a life enrichment question for you.

00:01:01 Speaker 2

We had a listener write in asking how they would suggest a new activity or event to be added to the calendar.

00:01:07 Speaker 2

So can you walk them through that process and how that works?

00:01:10 Speaker 1

So I love that question.

00:01:11 Speaker 1

So at Western reserve?

00:01:13 Speaker 1

We have an events and outings committee.

00:01:15 Speaker 1

It's made-up of about 10 of our community members.

00:01:19 Speaker 1

I meet with them regularly.

00:01:21 Speaker 1

They come with suggestions that they've received from other members.

00:01:25 Speaker 1

Along with some of their own suggestions for restaurants day trips.

00:01:30 Speaker 1

You know, plays theaters, things that they want to do.

00:01:33 Speaker 1

I think those suggestions and I basically.

00:01:36 Speaker 1

Make it happen.

00:01:38 Speaker 1

Everything on the calendar.

00:01:40 Speaker 1

Is suggestions that they've given me?

00:01:43 Speaker 2

I think that's a really special that all of the events and activities are made-up from what our residents would like to be doing.

00:01:49 Speaker 2

So let's talk a little bit about dining.

00:01:51 Speaker 2

Another question was, can I offer a recipe to the dining room manager?

00:01:56 Speaker 1

I have a great recent story about that so.

00:02:00 Speaker 1

One of our members was having dinner in our in our dining room with her husband and our.

00:02:06 Speaker 1

Dining Services manager was walking around talking to everybody.

00:02:09 Speaker 1

He asked her how her dinner was, she said.

00:02:12 Speaker 1

I don't like sweet potatoes, he said.

00:02:14 Speaker 1

Neither do I.

00:02:15 Speaker 1

So she shared with him that she found this recipe for vanilla sweet potatoes and she loves it.

00:02:22 Speaker 1

He asks for the recipe, so she gave it to him along with her apricot chicken recipe.

00:02:28 Speaker 1

Two weeks later, it was on the menu.

00:02:30 Speaker 1

Our chef loves to get recipes and try new things.

00:02:34 Speaker 4

Oh my gosh, stop it.

00:02:36 Speaker 4

That actually sounds.

00:02:37 Speaker 4

Really good apricot chicken.

00:02:37 Speaker 2

Yeah, that sounds delicious.

00:02:38 Speaker 2

I got that recipe.

00:02:40 Speaker 4

Yeah, you said vanilla sweet potatoes.

00:02:43 Speaker 1

Vanilla sweet potatoes.

00:02:45 Speaker 4

What A twist on a fall classic.

00:02:48 Speaker 2

Alright, so Samantha, we actually also had quite a few questions come in regarding the Resource Center and one of the most common questions we received was what is the Resource Center and what services does the Resource Center offer?

00:03:01 Speaker 2

So can you give a little bit of insight to our listeners on what your team does?

00:03:05 Speaker 3

Absolutely.

00:03:07 Speaker 3

So the Resource Center is the one call way to receive information and support.

00:03:12 Speaker 3

We help with clinical, financial and social needs and our focus is really helping those we serve to receive the resources they need in the best location.

00:03:23 Speaker 3

Whether that be on one of our campuses in their own home or elsewhere.

00:03:29 Speaker 3

We make referrals, we coordinate services, we do well checks and.

00:03:34 Speaker 3

And so much more.

00:03:37 Speaker 3

Really we are.

00:03:38 Speaker 3

We are here to.

00:03:39 Speaker 3

Meet each individual's unique need, whatever that may be, and we have coordinators that are located across the state.

00:03:47 Speaker 2

And then I think another question we had come in that kind of goes along with this is who is eligible to receive help from the Resource Center.

00:03:55 Speaker 3

Anyone can receive services from the Resource Center.

00:03:58 Speaker 3

You do not have to have a Masonic affiliation to receive information.

00:04:04 Speaker 3

Or receive support.

00:04:06 Speaker 2

Wonderful.

00:04:07 Speaker 2

That you are hearing that Samantha.

00:04:09 Speaker 3

And one additional thing is we do also make referrals.

00:04:15 Speaker 3

Or those that that need help getting connected to.

00:04:18 Speaker 3

Benefits and.

00:04:21 Speaker 3

You do have to have a Masonic affiliation to receive financial support from us.

00:04:25 Speaker 3

But certainly there are a lot of community organizations out there.

00:04:28 Speaker 3

So someone does not have a Masonic affiliation then we.

00:04:32 Speaker 3

Can still help connect them to other benefits and services that are available.

00:04:36 Speaker 2

That's wonderful.

00:04:37 Speaker 2

And for our listeners, just so you know, we will be putting the contact information for the Resource Center and the description for this episode.

00:04:43 Speaker 2

So that if you do need to connect with the Resource Center.

00:04:45 Speaker 2

You need services from them.

00:04:47 Speaker 2

You'll be able to contact them.

00:04:50 Speaker 2

All right, Melissa.

00:04:50 Speaker 2

The next one is for you.

00:04:52 Speaker 2

This listener wrote in.

00:04:53 Speaker 2

I am looking for the best location to move my mother and I keep hearing the acronyms DCRC.

00:04:59 Speaker 2

What does that mean and is that a good option to consider?

00:05:03 Speaker 4

Yes, we do use the acronym CCRC quite a bit.

00:05:08 Speaker 4

And in any healthcare or medical entity, we love our acronyms.

00:05:12 Speaker 4

So it's something that's thrown out quite a bit, but we do need to break it down for a lot of families.

00:05:17 Speaker 4

Just so they know exactly what they're looking for.

00:05:21 Speaker 4

And if they've found that, you know, if what we're calling a CRC is identifiable in their location or the territory that they're focused on searching so.

00:05:31 Speaker 4

CCRC is a continuing care.

00:05:35 Speaker 4

Retirement community.

00:05:36 Speaker 4

So I usually break it down in two parts for families continuing care.

00:05:41 Speaker 4

See C that means the.

00:05:43 Speaker 4

Constant ability to move from independent living through an assisted living level of care.

00:05:50 Speaker 4

Maybe siloed bio memory care assisted living, but the most important part of that continuing care is the fact that there is some type of short term rehab or long term care.

00:06:03 Speaker 4

Also considered a nursing home entity at the campus or location that you're looking at.

00:06:09 Speaker 4

So having all of those components makes up a true continuing care.

00:06:14 Speaker 4

And then the retirement community comes with everything that we do every day.

00:06:19 Speaker 4

For a senior on our campus that is 55 years or older.

00:06:23 Speaker 4

So as long as you fall within 55 to 105.

00:06:28 Speaker 4

Maybe even greater than that, we're supporting the seniors in our area in a continuing basis.

00:06:36 Speaker 2

Well, I think you made a great point there too.

00:06:38 Speaker 2

That continuing care retirement communities are wonderful option, but they are also location based.

00:06:43 Speaker 2

So somebody is looking in an area where one of the CRC might not exist.

00:06:48 Speaker 2

That's something to keep in mind that they are not everywhere.

00:06:52 Speaker 2

For the Ohio Masonic communities, we do have two.

00:06:55 Speaker 2

CCRC's we have one in Springfield.

00:06:57 Speaker 2

Ohio and one in Medina.

00:06:59 Speaker 2

Ohio, for those listening, if you are in those areas.

00:07:01 Speaker 2

Are interested in moving to one of those communities.

00:07:06 Speaker 2

Melissa, I think another thing that you hear often and that we got questions about is pets.

00:07:11 Speaker 2

Do we accept pets and what kind of pets are acceptable?

00:07:15 Speaker 2

We had some listeners right in asking about snakes and lizards.

00:07:19 Speaker 2

If we accept any exotic pets, so can you break down our cut policy?

00:07:23 Speaker 2

What we take?

00:07:24 Speaker 2

How many they can have all the stores.

00:07:26

Thank.

00:07:29 Speaker 4

Yeah, kind of the whole gamut around pets because a lot of individuals that any age have.

00:07:34 Speaker 4

Furry friends or as you may have mentioned, exotic reptile friends.

00:07:40 Speaker 4

But this simple answer is yes.

00:07:42 Speaker 4

Our campuses do allow pets.

00:07:47 Speaker 4

We most often see cats and dogs.

00:07:51 Speaker 4

So there is a 2 pet maximum in most of our standard size apartments.

00:07:59 Speaker 4

Some of our campuses do have very large.

00:08:03 Speaker 4

Garden ranch villas.

00:08:05 Speaker 4

Very unique floor plans that are very large square footage.

00:08:09 Speaker 4

I'm talking over 1500 square feet, so there have been exceptions for those larger floor plans to allow more than two pets.

00:08:19 Speaker 4

But ideally, as you know, an encompassed answer, it's a 2 pet maximum.

00:08:25 Speaker 4

And then occasionally we'll have a unique situation where there's, you know.

00:08:29 Speaker 4

2 cats in a small dog in a large apartment that we're able to.

00:08:34 Speaker 4

Talk about and.

00:08:35 Speaker 4

Just make sure that it's an appropriate environment safe for everyone.

00:08:39 Speaker 4

Not only the resident, but the animals and then their neighbors.

00:08:43 Speaker 4

As far as exotic pets go, I have yet to.

00:08:46 Speaker 4

Have an individual or family tell me they have a boa constrictor or a reptile.

00:08:53 Speaker 4

But I think we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

00:08:56 Speaker 4

And we do have some folks who, you know, double check with us and say, you know.

00:09:00 Speaker 4

I have a 20 gallon fish tank.

00:09:02 Speaker 4

I love you know, this type of fish and I've always, you know.

00:09:06 Speaker 4

Been fascinated by aquatic life.

00:09:08 Speaker 4

Is that acceptable?

00:09:10 Speaker 4

So tests we can have fish and aquariums, we've have had a few folks in the past with birds.

00:09:18 Speaker 4

So that's another type of pet that we have accepted in the past.

00:09:21 Speaker 4

But everything pet wise from you know, a cat or a dog.

00:09:26 Speaker 4

Does have a conversation about having a one time that fee?

00:09:32 Speaker 4

And that goes for all three of our Ohio Masonic communities.

00:09:36 Speaker 4

But I always rest assured to the family that it's one time you're not paying like an annual premium every month to have your pet live with you.

00:09:48 Speaker 4

It's one time, right when you move in and we collect that pet deposit you know upon entry of your furry friend.

00:09:57 Speaker 4

So that's kind of you know, what we hear a lot with families concerned that they would have to depart with a furry friend if they chose to move into a senior living community.

00:10:07 Speaker 4

And that is just not the case with us.

00:10:11 Speaker 2

Absolutely.

00:10:12 Speaker 2

Well, thank you for clarifying all the INS and outs of our pet policy for our listeners.

00:10:17 Speaker 2

Now we're going to talk a little bit about.

00:10:19 Speaker 2

Transportation and other listener question we've had come in asked about how transportation works in our communities.

00:10:26 Speaker 2

How do they sign up and where can they go with the community transportation that we offer?

00:10:33 Speaker 1

I guess I'll take that one.

00:10:35 Speaker 1

We offer we offer transportation for independent living and assisted living on our campus.

00:10:42 Speaker 1

We do a dealer shopping trip.

00:10:44 Speaker 1

Once a week, and we also offer a city.

00:10:46 Speaker 1

Loop.

00:10:47 Speaker 1

Where they can sign up and let.

00:10:49 Speaker 1

Us know what store they'd like to go to.

00:10:51 Speaker 1

And the bus will.

00:10:52 Speaker 1

Leave around Medina dropping off, picking them up where they need to go.

00:10:56 Speaker 1

It works out really.

00:10:57 Speaker 1

Well, when it comes to doctor's appointments.

00:11:00 Speaker 1

Things that are more scheduled, our transportation team handles that our Community member can call in and say they need to see a podiatrist to give them the doctor's name.

00:11:10 Speaker 1

Our transportation team will even schedule.

00:11:12 Speaker 4

That for them.

00:11:14 Speaker 1

And you know, pick them up and drop them off to their appointments.

00:11:17 Speaker 1

And that works out really good.

00:11:20 Speaker 2

I think that's such a great service that we offer as well.

00:11:23 Speaker 2

Not all senior living communities do offer transportation, so for those of you who are out there looking.

00:11:28 Speaker 2

Just keep that in mind.

00:11:29 Speaker 2

It's something to consider, something to ask questions about when you're touring communities.

00:11:34 Speaker 4

And I think Michelle said something too, like, you know.

00:11:37 Speaker 4

Our transportation team takes that next step.

00:11:40 Speaker 4

Because a lot of times they'll community members like I have an appointment this day at this time.

00:11:46 Speaker 4

But our transportation team has, you know, taken it upon themselves to say, hey.

00:11:51 Speaker 4

Maybe we can't, you know, figure out that exact time.

00:11:55 Speaker 4

But why don't you let us call the doctor and find a time that works for both of them?

00:12:02 Speaker 4

And that takes the resident out of feeling like the middle person.

00:12:06 Speaker 4

Because we know if the transportation team is scheduling it.

00:12:10 Speaker 4

We know it's an appointment that we can fulfill for that resident.

00:12:13 Speaker 4

So I never seen it go two ways, and that's just so unique to the Ohio Masonic communities.

00:12:21 Speaker 2

So, Melissa, I think you can help us out with the next question.

00:12:25 Speaker 2

But somebody wrote in recently, I have heard some of my friends mention the word waiver when looking at places for their parents to move.

00:12:32 Speaker 2

What is Medicaid waiver and is that something that any of our communities offer?

00:12:37 Speaker 4

Yes, it is a hot topic right now, and for good reason.

00:12:42 Speaker 4

That is because the Medicaid waiver program was recently rolled out at.

00:12:49 Speaker 4

The Browning Masonic community in Waterville. OH.

00:12:53 Speaker 1

So.

00:12:54 Speaker 4

Medicaid waiver is a state and federally funded program.

00:13:00 Speaker 4

It is something that not all communities offer.

00:13:03 Speaker 4

You have to apply to.

00:13:05 Speaker 4

Receive this service and receive this state and federal funded program so.

00:13:12 Speaker 4

Someone that you know would be eligible for Medicaid waiver at our Browning campus would be an individual that has.

00:13:20 Speaker 4

A2 year private OK spend down.

00:13:24 Speaker 4

So that means you know, they can afford to pay their monthly rent on our campus for 24 months and after that 24 month period we would.

00:13:35 Speaker 4

Work with job and Family Services and the local area aging office to submit their application to become a waiver eligible individual.

00:13:47 Speaker 4

And what that does is it takes their spend down that they have just completed over the last two years and it asks what is your monthly reliable income?

00:13:58 Speaker 4

Is that a Social Security or pension most common is and you know.

00:14:03 Speaker 4

How can we make continuing to live at Brownie Masonic Community affordable for you based on your reliable monthly income?

00:14:11 Speaker 4

So there is a lot of paperwork, but there is also a lot of support that our team.

00:14:16 Speaker 4

You know, provides in tandem with the Resource Center if there's connections and services that are needed to obtain some of the documents for the application.

00:14:25 Speaker 4

But we are so happy to, you know, be able to.

00:14:28 Speaker 4

Receive the this stamp of approval to offer Medicaid waiver because it really does hold you to a higher standard and a higher quality of care.

00:14:39 Speaker 4

And that's why, in the Waterville area, there are very few places that offer Medicaid waivers.

00:14:45 Speaker 4

So we are celebrating the fact that Browning has completed their application and even moved in their first Medicaid waiver eligible individual, so.

00:14:55 Speaker 4

Success is on its way.

00:14:58 Speaker 2

Well, thank you for sharing all the information on that.

00:15:01 Speaker 2

And so our listeners know, we do have an FAQ page on our website about waivers.

00:15:05 Speaker 2

So we'll go ahead and link to that in the description as well.

00:15:08 Speaker 2

If you have any additional questions, you can always call the Ohio Masonic communities.

00:15:12 Speaker 2

Melissa would be happy to walk you through any additional questions you have and then we have Julie.

00:15:17 Speaker 2

Who is our sales manager at Browning?

00:15:19 Speaker 2

Which Melissa mentioned is where we accept Medicaid waiver currently.

00:15:22 Speaker 2

And she'd be willing to help you as well.

00:15:25

Alright.

00:15:25 Speaker 2

The next question that we have is a little bit of a tough one.

00:15:28 Speaker 2

But how do I know when is the right time to move my mother to memory care?

00:15:33 Speaker 2

And so hard to know what's best.

00:15:35 Speaker 2

And I know this is something that a lot of our adult children struggle with.

00:15:39 Speaker 2

How do we know when that right time is?

00:15:41 Speaker 2

And Melissa, I'm sure you have this conversation with a lot of the adult children that you work with.

00:15:47 Speaker 2

So do you have an answer that you can help this listener out with?

00:15:51 Speaker 4

I do.

00:15:52 Speaker 4

And yes, it sounds definitely written by a loving family member because we hear it a lot.

00:15:58 Speaker 4

You know, how do I know it's time?

00:16:00 Speaker 4

Because there's going to be no obvious billboard as you're driving down the street that says it's time to move.

00:16:07 Speaker 4

You know, consider memory care over an assisted living for an independent living option.

00:16:14 Speaker 4

So I would you know, share with our listeners that.

00:16:17 Speaker 4

It's a combination.

00:16:20 Speaker 4

Of red slacks, right?

00:16:23 Speaker 4

It's not one definitive.

00:16:25 Speaker 4

You know day.

00:16:26 Speaker 4

In the life of your loved one.

00:16:28 Speaker 4

But it's a combination we always talk about.

00:16:32 Speaker 4

With our families safety concerns and that can look different for everyone.

00:16:36 Speaker 4

It's not just a focus on wandering or exit.

00:16:40 Speaker 4

Seeking their home could be, you know, more frequently getting lost.

00:16:46 Speaker 4

You know, while driving to very common places and your loved ones life, grocery store, bank.

00:16:53 Speaker 4

Church.

00:16:54 Speaker 4

It could be time and place.

00:16:55 Speaker 4

Orientation becoming more troublesome.

00:16:59 Speaker 4

Right before we moved my grandmother into a memory care.

00:17:03 Speaker 4

We noticed that she was, you know, arriving to church in the evening instead of in the morning for mass.

00:17:10 Speaker 4

And once that became a more.

00:17:12 Speaker 4

Redundant common.

00:17:15 Speaker 4

We've really started to seek expert and professional opinion to communicate some of those changes and that's when we kind of dug a little bit deeper.

00:17:24 Speaker 4

So notice some of the behavior changes.

00:17:27 Speaker 4

Is there increased confusion, increased agitation or increased fear?

00:17:33 Speaker 4

Those are some of the things we look at.

00:17:35 Speaker 4

It could also be increased friendliness.

00:17:38 Speaker 4

You know, if your loved one was always a very private individual and now they're opening the door for anyone who rings.

00:17:45 Speaker 4

That's a safety concern and a behavior change that's specific to their personality and it's no longer the person you once knew.

00:17:55 Speaker 4

So we definitely take those factors into consideration.

00:17:59 Speaker 4

But also we look at caregiver stress.

00:18:02 Speaker 4

So if you, the daughter, Son, niece, nephew are feeling and overwhelmed.

00:18:08 Speaker 4

Sense of frustration because you're having more caregiver stress.

00:18:13 Speaker 4

That's an important factor to consider.

00:18:15 Speaker 4

It's not just about your loved one safety or the increasing care needs that you're seeing.

00:18:21 Speaker 4

But you're now being impacted by the increase and the changes in your loved ones.

00:18:27 Speaker 4

So you have to weigh that heavily on the conversation table as well.

00:18:31 Speaker 4

But I really say safety concerns, behavior changes and the frequency of those will help guide you to knowing that's the right time.

00:18:40 Speaker 4

Because overall.

00:18:41 Speaker 4

Prioritizing safety and well-being, along with your own.

00:18:46 Speaker 4

Is going to be the moment that you reach out to the Ohio Masonic communities.

00:18:50 Speaker 4

And we can better help you with some deeper discussions to talk about the.

00:18:55 Speaker 4

The pain points.

00:18:57

That.

00:18:57 Speaker 4

They're becoming more that day today, but you got to just you know.

00:19:01 Speaker 4

Reach out a little bit before that crisis moment and start talking about some interventions that can be taken before there's.

00:19:08 Speaker 4

There's a hospitalization or crisis.

00:19:12 Speaker 2

Absolutely, and that's great advice, Melissa.

00:19:14 Speaker 2

So, thank you for sharing that.

00:19:16 Speaker 4

Sure.

00:19:16 Speaker 2

So Sam, we have another question for you this.

00:19:20 Speaker 2

Listener was wondering if the Resource Center helps people anywhere in Ohio because they don't actually live near one of our communities.

00:19:28 Speaker 3

Absolutely.

00:19:28 Speaker 3

We we do and you don't have to live near one of our communities to receive services and support through the Resource Center.

00:19:36 Speaker 3

We have an 877 number that anyone can call, no matter where they're located.

00:19:41 Speaker 3

And we have coordinators that are located across the state.

00:19:46 Speaker 3

So, wherever you are, wherever your primary residence.

00:19:50 Speaker 3

Is you can call in.

00:19:51 Speaker 3

We'll connect you with your local coordinator and.

00:19:55 Speaker 3

They are familiar with all the resources in your area.

00:19:58 Speaker 3

They can even come out and do a home visit and sit down with you and just talk about what it is that that you're needing and.

00:20:07 Speaker 3

So absolutely you do not have to be close to one of our.

00:20:11 Speaker 3

Campuses to call.

00:20:13 Speaker 4

Wonderful.

00:20:15 Speaker 2

So Melissa, we had another question come in regarding the rental model that we offer.

00:20:21 Speaker 2

But that they're actually talking with a friend who told them about entrance fees and the community they were looking at.

00:20:27 Speaker 2

So they were wondering if we can explain the difference.

00:20:29 Speaker 2

Between these two models.

00:20:31 Speaker 4

Yeah, we hear a lot of different families, you know.

00:20:35 Speaker 4

Because they're doing their research and I promote that if you don't it you know.

00:20:39 Speaker 4

Go out, get all the information, but identify you know what type of financial model each community you know is presenting to you.

00:20:50 Speaker 4

Because entry fees are something that we don't do, we actually give the option to do.

00:20:58 Speaker 4

If someone's comfortable with it.

00:21:00 Speaker 4

Because everything around financials and money is going to be a comfort zone conversation.

00:21:07 Speaker 4

So an entry fee community, plain and simple, if someone.

00:21:13 Speaker 4

Participates in the entry fee battle.

00:21:16 Speaker 4

It's saying you are giving a lump sum.

00:21:19 Speaker 4

Typically, large amount of six figures or more upfront.

00:21:25 Speaker 4

To that community and then in addition, paying a smaller monthly.

00:21:31 Speaker 4

Rent.

00:21:32 Speaker 4

Amount.

00:21:34 Speaker 4

So it could be saying, you know our entry fee is $200,000 and each month your rent is $4000 where at the Ohio Masonic communities.

00:21:45 Speaker 4

We don't make the entry fee.

00:21:48 Speaker 4

Mandatory someone can ask us about it, but we are just looking for a month to month rental pay your rent.

00:21:57 Speaker 4

It's due, you know, the first week of every month.

00:21:59 Speaker 4

That includes everything.

00:22:01 Speaker 4

It's all inclusive and we and that's how we.

00:22:04 Speaker 4

Decide and handle things because it can be very sensitive and overwhelming.

00:22:11 Speaker 4

You know, for a family to say, why am I giving you $200,000?

00:22:16 Speaker 4

What is the benefit of that and if the Community you're looking at doesn't have a good explanation for that?

00:22:21 Speaker 4

That's where I err on the side of caution.

00:22:25 Speaker 4

So I usually ask families, you know, what is your preference?

00:22:27 Speaker 4

What are you comfortable with and is it something you want to talk about and if not?

00:22:33 Speaker 4

We go forward with our normal brochure and our normal month to month rental options and that's how we take that situation.

00:22:43 Speaker 2

All right, Michelle, our next question is for you.

00:22:46 Speaker 2

This listener wrote in.

00:22:47 Speaker 2

It sounds like you have an abundance of activities on the calendar.

00:22:51 Speaker 2

Each month.

00:22:51 Speaker 2

Is this the case that all senior living communities and do all communities have a life enrichment team in programming?

00:22:59 Speaker 1

I would believe that all.

00:23:01 Speaker 1

Communities have calendars and a life enrichment team member in place.

00:23:06 Speaker 1

I would say if you're looking at a community that would be something you should look at.

00:23:12 Speaker 1

Like what activities are?

00:23:13 Speaker 1

Going on, what's on that calendar?

00:23:16 Speaker 1

Is this going to meet the needs of mom?

00:23:18 Speaker 1

Where she's at this stage in her life.

00:23:21 Speaker 1

I think what sets us apart.

00:23:22 Speaker 1

A little bit is.

00:23:24 Speaker 1

Our life enrichment team is in all care areas and our calendars are appropriate for those areas.

00:23:31 Speaker 1

You know to best meet the needs of that member.

00:23:34 Speaker 1

So if you're an independent living, obviously my calendar is going to look a little different than what the calendar looks like in memory care.

00:23:43 Speaker 1

So those are definitely things that you should look at and make sure those things are being offered.

00:23:47 Speaker 1

And don't forget, we allow our Members to make suggestions and families can also make suggestions too.

00:23:56 Speaker 2

Alright, so we had somebody write in asking about understanding pricing for different care levels and many of those care levels are covered by insurance.

00:24:06 Speaker 4

Oh, I think that one for me, isn't it, Alexandria?

00:24:10 Speaker 2

I think so.

00:24:11

OK.

00:24:13 Speaker 4

Yeah.

00:24:13 Speaker 4

We'll continue on with the pricing conversation.

00:24:17 Speaker 4

So, you know, pricing does.

00:24:19 Speaker 4

Depend on what care area you are looking at.

00:24:23 Speaker 4

So independent living has a different offering and package and cost man.

00:24:29 Speaker 4

Memory care and assisted living has a different cost services and you know quality of customizable care than independent living.

00:24:40 Speaker 4

So we've got to start with identifying what care level.

00:24:45 Speaker 4

We're loved.

00:24:46 Speaker 4

One is going to be best served.

00:24:47 Speaker 4

Is it independent living or is it assisted living or something else after we've identified that we kind of go off of the abundance of floor plans that we offer, right?

00:25:00 Speaker 4

So A1.

00:25:01 Speaker 4

Bedroom is going to cost less than a 2 bedroom and two bathroom apt 1.

00:25:06 Speaker 4

So then there's that level of conversation.

00:25:09 Speaker 4

What's the most?

00:25:09 Speaker 4

Appropriate floor plan for your loved one.

00:25:12 Speaker 4

And is that within the budget?

00:25:13 Speaker 4

But they were hoping for.

00:25:16 Speaker 4

And then the third thing I kind of do is we go over what's included in that care level in that floor plan.

00:25:25 Speaker 4

And.

00:25:26 Speaker 4

Figure out if there's any additional things that are going to be needed the insurance.

00:25:31 Speaker 4

Conversation comes in a few different ways.

00:25:36 Speaker 4

Your loved one is always going to use their insurance cards when they go to the doctor's.

00:25:41 Speaker 4

Appointments that they have on their schedule, it's always going to come into play when they go to the pharmacy on the shelves.

00:25:48 Speaker 4

City loop to pick up their prescriptions.

00:25:52 Speaker 4

So you know your insurance is important to the normal things that you're used to using it for.

00:25:58 Speaker 4

However, when we have.

00:26:01 Speaker 4

Have a hospitalization and they come back home to us.

00:26:06 Speaker 4

We do know that that is a trigger for your insurance to potentially get some additional.

00:26:13 Speaker 4

Cupboard therapy services.

00:26:16 Speaker 4

And that's where I think the three of us here have worked together a lot on.

00:26:21 Speaker 4

To get, you know, physical therapy or occupational therapy into someone’s home environment on our campus and we do use their insurance cards to do that.

00:26:31 Speaker 4

Because if there are covered services, we're always going to go that route first.

00:26:38 Speaker 4

And that's going to be specific to whatever insurance you have chosen.

00:26:43 Speaker 4

And then the third and last kind of entity where we get into insurance is if someone does a true short term.

00:26:52 Speaker 4

We have stay on one of our.

00:26:54 Speaker 4

CCRC.

00:26:56 Speaker 4

Continuing care campuses so they have had some type of health ailment, they.

00:27:03 Speaker 4

Most likely had a hospitalization.

00:27:06 Speaker 4

They are not ready to go back to their home villa.

00:27:10 Speaker 4

Apartment or original setting and they need to do a short term rehabilitation.

00:27:15 Speaker 4

Stay through their insurance.

00:27:18 Speaker 4

So it does come into play.

00:27:20 Speaker 4

It comes into play acknowledging that we have.

00:27:23 Speaker 4

CCRC campuses and we will use that insurance in every way we can.

00:27:30 Speaker 4

But your monthly rent is still going to be.

00:27:33 Speaker 4

Be considered private pay or an out of pocket cost that your insurance isn't going to touch.

00:27:41 Speaker 2

Well, thank you for clarifying that for our listeners, Melissa.

00:27:45 Speaker 2

Another thing I think you might be able to help with some clarification on is the term ADL.

00:27:50 Speaker 2

We had some listeners write in asking what that means.

00:27:53 Speaker 2

What that stands for, how that plays into the type of care that their loved one might need.

00:27:59 Speaker 2

So can you just explain what ADL's far and how that kind of fits into the care offered at a senior living community?

00:28:05 Speaker 4

Yes, back to the acronyms, that is.

00:28:08 Speaker 2

We learned.

00:28:09 Speaker 2

Acronyms are industry.

00:28:11 Speaker 2

Clearly.

00:28:12 Speaker 4

I'm so guilty.

00:28:13 Speaker 4

I wish I could give a guide to the family so they feel comfortable with our language.

00:28:19 Speaker 4

ADL stands for.

00:28:21 Speaker 4

Activity of daily living and if you broke down your.

00:28:28 Speaker 4

Loved ones day.

00:28:29 Speaker 4

From the moment that they get up to the moment they go to bed and then sandwich everything in between.

00:28:35 Speaker 4

Those are all their activities of daily living.

00:28:39 Speaker 4

So what time they get up?

00:28:41 Speaker 4

How they get out of bed, what their routine looks like.

00:28:44 Speaker 4

Do they have breakfast first or do they go to the bathroom first?

00:28:49 Speaker 4

Are they safe to do that?

00:28:52 Speaker 4

Motion of events when they get up.

00:28:56 Speaker 4

Meal preparation.

00:28:58 Speaker 4

Their mobility is considered an activity of daily living.

00:29:03 Speaker 4

You know how they navigate around their space.

00:29:06 Speaker 4

Is it independently on their own 2 feet?

00:29:09 Speaker 4

Does it include an assistive device like a cane Walker or rollator?

00:29:15 Speaker 4

So those are the activities of daily living we're looking for and it.

00:29:19 Speaker 4

Can be broken down even to, you know, their medication routine.

00:29:24 Speaker 4

That's part of their day.

00:29:26 Speaker 4

It can be broken down into.

00:29:30 Speaker 4

Preparing meals.

00:29:31 Speaker 4

Right.

00:29:32 Speaker 4

Do they fully still cook breakfast, lunch and dinner?

00:29:36 Speaker 4

Or have they substituted the you know topic?

00:29:41 Speaker 4

Easy, fast food to go meals or.

00:29:44 Speaker 4

Microwavable meals and why is that?

00:29:48 Speaker 4

You know, do they prefer that or do they just no longer have the ability to make a home cooked?

00:29:54 Speaker 4

Nutritious meal.

00:29:55 Speaker 4

So again, anything from the moment your loved one wakes up to the moment they go to bed and how they.

00:30:01 Speaker 4

Do that is considered an activity of daily living.

00:30:07 Speaker 3

Alright.

00:30:07 Speaker 2

And then our next question was in regards to home health and adult day options.

00:30:14 Speaker 2

So this listener was kind of wondering what the difference is between that and moving 2.

00:30:18 Speaker 2

Senior living community.

00:30:19 Speaker 2

As far as the amount of care that's offered, if care can be offered around the clock.

00:30:25 Speaker 2

So, Melissa, do you?

00:30:26 Speaker 2

Have any advice for them as far as what option might be the best and?

00:30:31 Speaker 2

What the differences are between them?

00:30:34 Speaker 4

So yeah.

00:30:34 Speaker 4

The difference between adult daycare and a full time, you know.

00:30:39 Speaker 4

Resident at one of our communities is going to be extremely different.

00:30:45 Speaker 4

Adult day programs are, I would say, harder to find.

00:30:49 Speaker 4

They're not.

00:30:51 Speaker 4

Robust and we want to make sure that.

00:30:54 Speaker 4

You're finding a good one that has a good reputation.

00:30:56 Speaker 4

Just like any community, because the essence is you're, you know.

00:31:00 Speaker 4

Dropping off your loved one for ASAP period of time.

00:31:04 Speaker 4

So with a set drop off and a set pickup.

00:31:07 Speaker 4

And there's usually a daily rate, you know, a cost that comes with that.

00:31:12 Speaker 4

Whereas if your loved one was truly submerged in the community.

00:31:17 Speaker 4

They have more likelihood to build friendships and build a routine.

00:31:22 Speaker 4

We see a lot of folks that you know, have used adult daycare.

00:31:26 Speaker 4

As you know, an intervention to cover something else, they needed to do.

00:31:32 Speaker 4

It's a one off situation that's really supportive.

00:31:36 Speaker 4

But living at a community is this 24/7 encompass support?

00:31:42 Speaker 4

It's 24/7, it's around the clock, whereas adult daycare is going to be just a set amount of time.

00:31:49 Speaker 4

So I'd say that is a great option, but if you're going beyond.

00:31:54 Speaker 4

That hourly.

00:31:56 Speaker 4

Type surveys.

00:31:58 Speaker 4

It's definitely time to look at a community that.

00:32:01 Speaker 4

Could be more full service.

00:32:04 Speaker 2

Absolutely.

00:32:05 Speaker 2

So Sam, my last question is going to go to you.

00:32:09 Speaker 2

This person wrote in that they are interested in volunteering with the Resource Center and they wanted to know what volunteer options are available and who they should connect with to get started.

00:32:22 Speaker 3

We would love to have more volunteers across.

00:32:25 Speaker 1

The state.

00:32:26 Speaker 3

So if anyone is interested, they should call our 8.

00:32:30 Speaker 3

7/7.

00:32:31 Speaker 3

Number and call us and talk to us once tier opportunities.

00:32:35 Speaker 3

Really someone can do whatever they choose or are able to if they want to.

00:32:41 Speaker 3

You know do well checks, make phone calls.

00:32:45 Speaker 3

Or, you know, we have some volunteers that help take clients to medical appointments or offer other transportation or help with yard work or.

00:32:55 Speaker 3

You know, just do visits.

00:32:57 Speaker 3

So there's so many options.

00:32:59 Speaker 3

And definitely we could not do.

00:33:01 Speaker 3

What we do without our volunteers?

00:33:03 Speaker 3

So I.

00:33:03 Speaker 3

Would definitely encourage and we would be very excited to have more volunteers located across the state.

00:33:11 Speaker 2

Just as a reminder for our listeners, we will have the Resource Center phone number and the description for this episode.

00:33:17 Speaker 2

So go ahead and call that number if you have questions about volunteering or would like to get signed up.

00:33:23 Speaker 2

Alright, so before we close out today, I wanted to go around.

00:33:27 Speaker 2

Are there any common questions that you get that you think?

00:33:30 Speaker 2

Would be beneficial to share with our listeners.

00:33:34 Speaker 4

I just.

00:33:35 Speaker 1

I was just thinking, listening to Sam, how much?

00:33:38 Speaker 1

And he wasn't brought it up a little bit to how we coordinate things on our campus.

00:33:43 Speaker 1

You know.

00:33:44 Speaker 1

Maybe Mom is an independent living, but there's a need there. I.

00:33:48 Speaker 1

Can reach out to Samantha Lloyd.

00:33:49 Speaker 1

She's going to call the family.

00:33:51 Speaker 1

What resources can we help?

00:33:54 Speaker 1

Mom, get on campus.

00:33:56 Speaker 1

I think that is very important to mention that because, yes.

00:34:00 Speaker 1

Our Resource Center does a lot of things across the state.

00:34:03 Speaker 1

But amazing things on our campuses as well.

00:34:06

Wow.

00:34:07 Speaker 2

Thank you, Michelle Allen.

00:34:08 Speaker 3

And yet some common things are like help getting orders for therapy.

00:34:12 Speaker 3

Or if someone wants a personal emergency response system, you know the full pendants.

00:34:17 Speaker 3

We can help make referrals and coordinate that or coordinate private duty home care.

00:34:22 Speaker 3

You know, in home care.

00:34:24 Speaker 3

So as Michelle was mentioning, you know whether that's help on our campuses or in their own homes is our common things that we do.

00:34:34

The.

00:34:34 Speaker 4

Yeah.

00:34:35 Speaker 4

I think one of the situations that comes to me.

00:34:40 Speaker 4

You know whether it's pertinent in the moving process or not.

00:34:43 Speaker 4

And then I kind of rely on.

00:34:46 Speaker 4

Michelle and Samantha at the Resource Center is, you know.

00:34:50 Speaker 4

There's some tough conversations that come along with considering moving to a retirement community.

00:34:58 Speaker 4

And most recently I was helping a family, you know.

00:35:01 Speaker 4

Have talking points to the conversation about driving and safety concerns.

00:35:06 Speaker 4

So we really do get that.

00:35:08 Speaker 4

Conversation.

00:35:10 Speaker 4

Sometimes on the front end, but more often.

00:35:14 Speaker 4

The three of us are working together with the family.

00:35:18 Speaker 4

After someone moves in and they're realizing, you know, family wise.

00:35:23 Speaker 4

Maybe it's no longer safe that mom or dad is driving and you know.

00:35:28 Speaker 4

How do we present other transportation options to them so that they can also see and hopefully make their own decision that?

00:35:36 Speaker 4

You know, driving isn't a necessity.

00:35:38 Speaker 4

Or could we take?

00:35:41 Speaker 4

A season off from driving it's ideal time we're having those conversations now as we head into the winter months.

00:35:50 Speaker 4

But I think we do get that conversation in question a lot.

00:35:53 Speaker 4

It's more often from families.

00:35:56 Speaker 4

But it's something that the three of us work together to try to provide a nice.

00:36:01 Speaker 4

You know.

00:36:02 Speaker 4

Intervention that everyone's in agreement with, or just bring up the conversation.

00:36:08 Speaker 1

Yeah, that's a hard conversation for them.

00:36:10 Speaker 1

To have with Mom or dad.

00:36:12 Speaker 1

And I've had families.

00:36:13 Speaker 1

Reach out to me.

00:36:14 Speaker 1

Can you help?

00:36:15 Speaker 1

We are supporting this, but I just I can't do it and I've met with the Community member and sometimes it just yeah.

00:36:22 Speaker 1

It takes that burden off of the family to have us go and talk to the member about the driving.

00:36:29 Speaker 4

Yeah, that that's probably one of the most common ones we're seeing right now with the time of year 2 is it's an ideal conversation to be having right now.

00:36:39 Speaker 4

So it's definitely up to him.

00:36:42 Speaker 4

In the conversations we're having with fancies.

00:36:47 Speaker 2

I want to thank you all again for joining me today.

00:36:49 Speaker 2
