Speaker 1 (00:00)
Hi, this is Jackie. And this is HomeBodiesOnly, where we welcome all bodies to join us as we break down and dissect HBO Max series. And this is part two of our recap of the White Lotus season three finale, Amor Fati. Here are the rest of our thoughts. Enjoy.
I have questions unanswered. Do you want to do that or do you want to do?
Speaker 2 (00:31)
Okay.
Well, let's talk predictions. I did predict that Gaitok would have to shoot someone. I thought he would feel bad about it, but c'est la vie, everybody's awful. We talked about Chelsea would die. You know, I said that from, look, the first or second, it was like early on, I was like, she's too good for this world. then Jim is Rick's father.
Speaker 1 (01:03)
father Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:05)
And I kind of.
Like, don't get me wrong, it's great to be right. You know, it's fun being right. But I kind of didn't want to be. Like, I didn't want Chelsea to die because she was my favorite character. I also thought the... I thought the Jim being Rick's father was a little cliche. It was a little too... This is the twist. It would almost be a twist.
if it wasn't that way. that sort of thing is so planned. Were there anything other predictions that we made I can't think of right now or?
Speaker 1 (01:46)
That's kind of in my questions unanswered is the predictions, I guess. You want to hear those? I said it earlier, I think. Why was Jim so mean to Rick? Like, that's his son. was like, what the heck was that about? And we won't know, I guess. What's going to happen with the Ratliffs? What is going to happen? I don't know. Was there, this is what's driving me nuts. This was when I was.
my predictions. I thought we were going to see a connection between GreGary and Jim Hollinger. I really thought there was going to be more to that. But again, GreGary has been in each season, he has been this, the thread, the common thread, the one thread that's been in every season. So is he going to be in season four now?
Speaker 2 (02:34)
Like the worst guy. Yeah. It's like a show that highlights the worst people.
Speaker 1 (02:41)
yeah, yep. Why is GreGary staying so close to the White Lotus when Belinda may not be the only one who remembers him, like from Hawaii, then there's Italy and he wasn't in Italy for very long, but he was there with Tanya. Like, I thought that was weird. It's a chain, like, come on, employees talk, they might know each other from different locations. Does Chloe know that her BFF
died. Like, what's that about? Did we know that? Does she care? Are Mook and Gaitok going to get married now that he's a killer? I feel like it was like a little bit like Grease. Like, remember in Grease, she went from being the goody. I mean, that's not extreme, but Sandy becomes the bad girl, you know, edgy. She can be all edgy with her leather.
Speaker 2 (03:36)
We didn't get a lot of falling action. You know, we didn't get a lot of, we didn't get a lot of time to see, you know, to wrap up certain plot threads and things like that. And I feel like that's what episode nine would have been. And they just didn't bother to do it. And I don't know why, you know, but like, I guess we don't need to know. We sort of assume things or we can predict things on our own with
Mook and Gaitok mean, like, you asked for this, honey. Like, you wanted him to be like this, great. He's moving up in the world as a private security stooge for this woman who ordered him to kill somebody.
Speaker 1 (04:22)
Maybe he'll start dating one of the Russian chicks and stick it to Mook
Speaker 2 (04:26)
I
mean, that whole thing too, like she just gets worse. Yeah. You know? And the fact that he doesn't do anything, he doesn't tell her who he is or what he wants. It's just disappointing. The lack of character in these characters is really disappointing and disheartening.
Speaker 1 (04:49)
The only thing and not make an excuse for Gaitok but I wonder if he just was like, I'm just tired of tired of.
maybe doing, I'm not saying I relate to it, but like doing the right thing, but not getting the girl, not getting any kind of acknowledgement, really.
Speaker 2 (05:10)
You would think because of the way they set him up that after this whole thing he would have a hard time sleeping at night. But he doesn't, he seems fine, which makes it worse.
Speaker 1 (05:24)
There was so much worship of Sritala also though, it seemed like by the people who worked there. Like more than just, okay, she has the money and she's the owner. It's like, it was kind of weird. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:35)
It's a little culty.
know, here's a question. Like, anybody want to get Lochy Maybe some metal medical attention.
Speaker 1 (05:46)
sorry, yes, I should have.
Speaker 2 (05:48)
Just like, all right, son, get on the boat. Like he almost died. What? Yeah. You don't want to like, nobody, like, nobody's like, Hey, what happened to you, son? Right. You know, why did you almost die?
Speaker 1 (06:03)
Does he know why he doesn't why he doesn't know why he threw up from a from a sha- a smoothie, you know like
why was Rick such a good shot? What the heck was that about? And he, he killed like a lot. How many bodyguards did he kill? You know, I watched it twice and for some reason the first time I think I honestly think that the laptop was on my lap and I was shaking it. Like I was like, like I just couldn't believe what the heck was happening. I was like, my God. And I didn't realize he killed like at least what three bodyguards?
Speaker 2 (06:42)
So based on his conversations with Sam Rockwell, he is a criminal. Yes. Like, he is definitely a criminal and came to money by dubious means. Yeah. And he is a bad person. You know, like, yeah, he screwed up. But like, Chelsea is the type of person who would like, it's like that old fable about the,
The scorpion on the back of the frog.
Speaker 1 (07:12)
They're a scorpion, right? Isn't that what they say?
Speaker 2 (07:15)
And you
know, she loves him and she wants to support him and you know, fix his pain, but he's still gonna kill her. And it's like, wait, now we're both gonna drown. Well, you know, that's who I am. That's who this guy is. And it's awful. It's just bloody awful.
Speaker 1 (07:32)
I just thought of something too. Well, I was thinking about it earlier. So I told Jason, a friend of mine had found out who the shooter was before. Like, I think I told you that. was like, maybe only three episodes has aired or something. And he was like, do you want me to tell you? I'm like, no. And he said, they hint at it in the first episode. That's what he had said to me. And I was like, so now I feel like I gotta watch the first episode and see if there are hints toward Rick.
But I don't know, I don't know, I don't.
Speaker 2 (08:05)
We don't get a lot in that, because I remember I rewatched the first episode. We don't get a lot of evidence about the shooter. We did surmise that it was a shootout, that that was way too many bullets for one person to be firing, unless he's trying to kill like 15 people. Right. But yeah, really think, it also, it just seems like, it almost feels forced dramatically in the writing to have him snap.
and go off the deep end. And I think part of it that was so horrible is like, it's not just your life. He knows this person has armed bodyguards. He knows the guy himself is armed. He's seen the gun, right? For him up to go up and grab the gun with his girlfriend 10 feet away, who he supposedly just loves and cares about, he has lost all perspective.
Speaker 1 (09:04)
yeah, he was out of his mind. That's what I think.
Speaker 2 (09:09)
But like, really? You know, like you can't stop. I mean, everybody's had those moments where you want to kill somebody on the subway. You want to run somebody over with your car. know, every I think we've all at some point thought about losing it. But you don't. Because you think five minutes into the future and being handcuffed and put into the back of a police car.
or disappointing your mother or, you know, maybe getting hurt yourself and you don't do it, you know, like, cause they never intimated. wasn't sane, you know, like he was just going to like snap and like, If he was going to do that, why didn't he just shoot him when they first met? Why didn't he let him talk? Why didn't they have a bigger scene then? Then he could have killed him in his own home and Chelsea would have been fine.
I mean, she wouldn't have been fine, but she'd be alive.
Speaker 1 (10:11)
Yeah,
I think that when he was talking to him in his home, I think he almost felt like, wow, this is just like a withered up old man. And like when he fell and he seemed helpless, he was like, yeah, forget it. I don't know, again, he's the owner of the hotel. So it's not like he's not gonna see him again. So that was kind of weird. But then I really think it's, I think for him snapping is to really show he was that.
messed up from this whole thing, blaming all of his life's problems on his dad being killed and never knowing his dad. And I think when, cause he was like, I'll get out of here. I'm going on the first boat. He was like kind of done, but once he insulted his mom, I think that he was like, no. Cause he had come there to really, that he felt like I need to kill this guy and then I'll be better.
then he didn't, but he thought he was okay. then when I think he just, yeah, I think he snapped and clearly wasn't thinking.
Speaker 2 (11:16)
Just, you know, slug the guy at the buffet or something and get kicked out. You know, don't like murder him. I mean, you know, it's a TV show and things go to extreme for dramatic effect, but it does feel a little bit sort of like, seriously? This is. And, you know, to me, that can feel like forced conflict where you have somebody doing something for the sake of the plot.
you know, more than what would like really happen or real circumstances. know, and things like, you know, like people not knowing what happened. Well, everybody would know what happened. There'd be a billion police surrounding that place. They had an active shooter. mean, right. People be the walls. Everybody would be cops everywhere. You know, I've seen shows, especially things that were like shot during the pandemic, where you're like, OK, where is everybody?
Like I remember watching the Marvel Hawkeye show and the climax takes place at Rockefeller Center at Christmas time. And there's like nobody there. And you're like, wait a minute. I live there. There's like a gajillion people there all the time. I've seen people there at three o'clock in the morning. Like this is just supposed to be like a Saturday night. Where is everybody? But like, yeah, there would be so many cops there. Gaitok would have been arrested for murder.
Cause you shot the guy in the back. You wouldn't be, you you, you don't get a promotion. get a sentence. you know, and the fact that Lochy went like, how do they know there's not poison still in the system? I know. mean, like probably what should have happened was, immediately rushed to the hospital, a stomach pump, put an IV line into him and possibly put them on dialysis.
Speaker 1 (12:57)
And why didn't he die?
Speaker 2 (13:12)
to get rid of whatever poison is still left in his bloodstream. I mean, you know, I don't think there was enough. There wasn't enough poison left in there, but like he did get really sick. But you don't know. Like you don't know that he's fine. could have a really, he could have a seizure on the boat. Yeah. You know, like
Speaker 1 (13:15)
Why didn't he die though? That's what I want.
Did you think he was dead?
Speaker 2 (13:34)
I thought he was dead.
Speaker 1 (13:37)
I
definitely, that I did not expect. I did not expect him to come back.
Speaker 2 (13:41)
And then, you know, when Chelsea is shot, you're like, no, is she, you know, is she dead or could she make it? then dirty Harry plugs Rick in the back and they go off the side and draw like, come on, dude, maybe she was still, you know, no, no, just gonna murder a dude from the back. Cause my boss told me to, mean, you know, maybe this thing is just an indictment on capitalism, you know, but
Speaker 1 (13:56)
You didn't even look at her.
Speaker 2 (14:10)
God, know, that's, know, what I've been asking myself a lot lately with some, with some entertainment in particular, like a lot of films and stuff when it's like, you know, the 12th sequel or the sequel that happens 25 years after the original or whatever. just like, do we need this movie? Do anybody need this? You know, like with this finale, I'm like, did I need to feel this way?
Do I want a TV show to make me feel bad? Right. About how, like, you know what TV show makes me feel bad? The news. You know, like look at anything now. You scroll on your phone for 10 minutes and awful, you know, do I need a TV show that makes me feel that way?
Speaker 1 (14:45)
Yeah.
Maybe what will make you feel better is if you did get sucked into the fandom of it and all the threads I have read about everybody felt completely the same as you, didn't want Chelsea to die, was upset about Gaitok, was upset about Belinda. So maybe that's what it is. Maybe the fact that everyone is on the same page with that gives you hope.
because that's the real people.
Speaker 2 (15:29)
I in a way, I also know people who are like, yeah, good for Belinda, like good for her. She deserves that.
Speaker 1 (15:36)
Well,
that's what I was going to ask you. I actually know I haven't talked to too many people about it, but who well, like from the thread from the threads or the chats, they nobody seemed to be happy with Belinda. That's why I wanted to ask you. My friend from work who also watched and is totally caught up. She was she was surprised. But then she said she's like, I don't know, would I have taken the money and not like that's what I was going to ask you. What do you think?
if you are offered.
Speaker 2 (16:07)
I think that's what Mike White is asking all of us with that character. think that's the question he's posing. If somebody had offered me $100,000, know, hey, anybody can use $100,000. When the son was like going back and asking for more money, I would have been like, why are you poking this bear? This guy's trying to get out of this for a hundred grand, and you're going to push a guy who we suspect of murder?
who give us money. He's already offered us a pretty good amount of money. mean, it's not enough money to do it, but whatever. like, if somebody is willing to pay 100 grand, don't think he'd be, you don't think he would take that same 100 grand and put a hit out on you? You know, like that's what I would think. I would be like, you know what, guy, I'm not going to say anything. Keep your money. You know, Bob's your uncle. Live in peace.
I'm getting the hell out of here on the next boat. And that's what makes it unbelievable that she gets...
Speaker 1 (17:10)
scared for your life. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:12)
She thinks she's just gonna get five mil, no strings attached. Like, yeah, people are rich. Also, like I said before, that's not the way that happens. But I think anybody who is gonna give you that kind of money wouldn't just like, here. I mean, in a drug deal, yeah, you put it in a briefcase and you know what I mean? It's a cash, but to do it with any sort of paper trail, because that can be traced back to him.
Yeah. Yeah. Like that's got his routing information and all that kind of stuff too. not only is he a criminal, he's a dumb criminal. You know, like why, why would this mastermind do that? So that was also, that was, that was, A, it was unbelievable. But B, in terms of taking the money, I'd be like, no, this guy's offering me money, but he can still whack me.
You know, he gets, you know, if this guy said, if this guy said one person killed, what's two?
Speaker 1 (18:16)
Now I think about it, like having her son involved at all, that's not protecting your son. So what if he's there? That guy has way more power. Yeah, no, it's a whole thing.
Speaker 2 (18:32)
Supposedly this guy's worth half a bill right half a billion dollars
Speaker 1 (18:35)
Right.
Do you know how f-
Speaker 2 (18:38)
Do know how much money that is in Thailand?
Speaker 1 (18:41)
Right?
Speaker 2 (18:43)
Like you can, you can buy a, you can live very, very comfortably in Thailand for, you know, probably half of what the average American household takes. Right. So to have that kind of money in that country, he is like one of the most richest, most powerful people. How do you know he hasn't bought the entire police force and couldn't just shoot you in his house and have somebody else just, you know, I'm like,
He is full on gangster rich. Like he could kill you so easily. And you're in Thailand. I once had a client that was in a foreign country and they wanted me to deliver their video. And I was like, I need to get paid first before I deliver this to you because.
you're in a different country, how would I have any recourse if you didn't?
Speaker 1 (19:46)
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (19:46)
I could say I could send you all of your deliverables and just be like, all right, bye. Bye. Come find me in Thailand. You know what mean? Like, what are you going to do? So like you're in a foreign country, you're in this guy's backyard, you're in his house and you're basically blackmailing him. I mean, first of all, the coupons that you need to do that. Yeah. You know, like this kid's trying to be a business major, but like, I, you know, you're right. That's his mother. I'd be like, listen, idiot. Yeah. This could
Backfire and we're both dead. You know, it's one thing for me to be in this situation, but you're my son You know, my whole job is protecting you your whole life Don't do this, you know, like just you know mother of the year guys Not not awesome. So Where does this leave us? What you know, like I feel like
And the fact that we're talking about it this much means the show is very effective. The show is doing what it wanted to do. I just don't know that I like what it did.
Speaker 1 (20:51)
like what he did to you.
Speaker 2 (20:53)
You you know, it does, I gotta say, it doesn't make me want to watch another season.
Speaker 1 (21:02)
Well, I heard that it might not come out for another two to three years. So maybe by that point, it's like when a woman goes through childbirth, they forget, supposedly. I will never forget. But you like you forget what it was like. So you're like, yeah, have another one. Like enough time passes. So maybe enough time will pass.
Speaker 2 (21:21)
The scars will fade and the pain will be forgotten. I don't know. It's just like, here's the thing. There's so many other things to watch. Right. You know, like there's so many other things to watch that don't make me feel awful at the end or lose, you know. would personally, I would like a show that a little bit at least restored my faith in humanity and didn't like flush it down the toilet.
Speaker 1 (21:47)
night.
Speaker 2 (21:51)
Just saying. You know, well, that would be nice.
Speaker 1 (21:55)
Charlotte, think it's Charlotte Le Bon who plays Chloe. I know her last name is Le Bon because I thought of Simon Le Bon from Duran Duran. I think it's Charlotte, think. She said you're gonna hate Mike White after the finale, so there you go. That wasn't a lie.
Speaker 2 (22:10)
No, mean, it's very effective. I just don't like the effect. And it doesn't make me want to gear up for the next season of White Lotus, but I know people will. But I also think that looking at it like we've looked at it, you take it little bit more personally. Because you're not just investing.
the hour that you watch every week. Nope. I'm investing hours in this. Yeah. So I don't know. You know, I feel like very well done and, you know, great filmmaking, great, wonderful acting, pretty solid all the way around in terms of like writing and execution. But yeah, I don't, you know, it's, you know, it's like,
Speaker 1 (22:42)
hours.
Speaker 2 (23:08)
somebody can make a really great tiramisu. Like they can make the world's best tiramisu. But if you don't like the taste of coffee...
Speaker 1 (23:17)
You're not going to like it.
Speaker 2 (23:19)
Nope. It's not your dessert. Yeah. know, be like, Hey, this is really good, but I hate this. Yeah. Because it's not my taste. you know, there you go. And I'm sure there's people who love it for all the same reasons. I, I didn't. Yeah. You know, there you go. Which is also, you know, the fact that it causes debate. That's very effective television, you know? All right. So what do want to do? You want to wrap up? Wrapping up this season of white lotus.
Speaker 1 (23:40)
Yeah. Yep.
Let's wrap up.
