Nicole's story...

We do recover- I consider myself a recovered addict, I am 43 years of age mum of 4 boys, wife, daughter, sister and aunt/godmother. Addiction does not discriminate.

I was addicted to ICE for a very small time in my 30’s,  (5-7 years) and it did not take long until my life began to spiral out of control.

Jail became a revolving door, I committed more crime to fuel my addiction so I could hide it from my children and family (so I thought)  until enough was enough.

Today,  I am almost at my 5 year mark drug free/crime free. I have spent the last 5 years studying AOD and mental health, I volunteered at a hospital detox and I’m now blessed to be employed in the community service sector helping others.

I do as much as I can for the community as a way of giving back and to help stop the cycle by being non judgmental, being kind, being part of a bigger plan of education, prevention amongst the community, helping people link up to services for support.

At the time of addiction, you just do not know what help is out there (if there is any) and then there is the stigma when you actually decide to go to get help, the wait times for public health is such a huge mountain to climb, you discover the rules attached to services - the criteria.

My goal is to work towards a better future with accessible services for everyone to access easily, remove the judgement, remove the stigma and educate.

Thank you so much Nicole for sharing your story demonstrating we can change and you are the change you want to see for others  in the world.
