Dr. Marie Osborn on Trailblazing
Marie Osborn is a trailblazer. She was born in Russellville, KY. Marie obtained a BSN in 1953 from Ball State University. She began her advanced practice journey in response to observing a great need for medical services in the small town of Stanley, Idaho. Marie is Idaho's first nurse practitioner.
In 1972, she attended the University of Washington - Harborview to earn a certificate as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner and worked with faculty to write up the first training manuals for practice. This was the same year that she founded the Salmon River Clinic. In 1974 she was in the first Nurse Practitioner class at the University of Utah. In 1976 she did additional trauma and coroner training at Cook County in Chicago and was the first woman to ride an ambulance in South Side Chicago.
Marie Osborn was the sole provider at the Salmon River Clinic practicing emergency and primary care, covering approximately 6000 square miles in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. She practiced and guided internships for a variety of professional students for nearly 30 years. Update: Dr. Marie Osborn was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from The College of Idaho during the May 21, 2022 commencement at the Caldwell college.
