S1E9: SIDE CHAT (carpe diem)

SPEAKERS

LILY, JENNY

JENNY  00:00

What did the psychic say the other day about your- she said politics but she also said acting.

LILY  00:09

Yeah, she also said acting. Yeah. Interesting

JENNY  00:12

Have you been thinking about that much?

LILY  00:14

Well funny because I helped _______ yesterday with her self tape. And I was like Iike, I'm not good at this.

JENNY  00:19

Like I'm a lover and a fighter, whatever.

LILY  00:22

Yeah, I was just like, I don't know, it's one of those things where I do feel like I would, I would get really into like method acting. I think I do like a lot of research. I think I would, if I got over that like hesitation of Oh my god, this is me doing this thing and just like put that away and be like, No, I'm this character doing this thing. Yeah, I could learn to do that. I do think I could be quite good. But yeah, there's that real kind of fear of that, which is really interesting, but I don't know might be interesting, just for me as a person to like, work on, challenge myself with, but she kind of just said that I'm a teacher, not a-She said, you're a teacher, not a preacher. So like, you're gonna want to learn stuff, and then tell people about it.

JENNY  01:05

Right

LILY  01:06

Which makes sense. That's all I'm interested in, is learning stuff and then talking to people about it. So yeah, I don't know, I don't know

JENNY  01:15

You could do stand up or improv. I'm thinking of ____ and I doing a stand up course together, or stand up comedy or improvisation. And I know, you're gonna say why

LILY  01:26

Why?

JENNY  01:28

For fun,

LILY  01:29

okay,

JENNY  01:30

and to challenge. And I think we'd have a lot of fun doing it together. And it would be challenging. I think it would be, it would help me clear my energy, which I'm trying to do. And ground me. And I'm holding, I'm holding this horse from ______.

LILY  01:45

I noticed

JENNY  01:47

Because I spoke to ______ this morning, and she said, and I told her about the podcast. And she said, when you're recording it with Lily, hold something from the here and now, that will keep you connected to now so that you don't get stuck in the past. Because I said, going back through the diaries and reading, it's kind of it's having a weird effect on me, and I'm feeling kind of weird, a bit weird about it, and it's sort of blocking my writing and she feels that it's sort of, that I need to do this, then it will help with the writing. And just anyway, that's a whole other conversation

LILY  02:23

That's interesting.

JENNY  02:23

Yeah.

LILY  02:24

That's just kind of pulling you back.

JENNY  02:26

Yeah. pulling me back

LILY  02:27

a bit mentally.

JENNY  02:28

Exactly. Yeah. So that's interesting.

LILY  02:33

Well that'd be fun. If you guys. Have you talked to him about it? Do you think he'd be interested?

JENNY  02:38

Yeah. I said to him, I said, Would you be interested in that? And he goes, Maybe, and I've sent him a couple of links to Melbourne Comedy workshops, I will say, I mean, it's like, to try it would be confronting, it would be scary. But I think ultimately, it would be very, it could be really liberating and fun. As I said to you, I want to tap into my fun side a bit more and find joy and enjoyment.

LILY  03:04

Yeah, and I think as well, like, even if it's not *the thing* just to be practising that kind of mindset of oh, I engage with the world. Because I feel like the older we get, the more we get stuck in that 'I can't do that thing. I can't do that.'

JENNY  03:18

Yeah.

LILY  03:18

And we tend to have a fairly jaded, in some ways pessimistic view of the world and of people who try in the world. I think, I don't know. I don't know if that's a very, like, Melburnian thing, but everyone's very concerned with like, not trying and being very chill and cool.

JENNY  03:34

Yeah, exactly.

LILY  03:36

To like, be enthused about something and into something. It's just like, it's not cool. And it's just, I don't know. Yeah, I'm over it. Give a shit. Engage, you know? So even if it's not- even if stand up's not the thing, it's just good to be like, Okay, we're gonna try something, try something new

JENNY  03:51

Yeah, it's not it's not about the stand up, it's not not about wanting to have a new career! [Laughter] in stand up!

LILY  03:57

Who knows? Imagine _______ just kind of becomes a sensation and I could kind of see it. In his stripey polos.

JENNY  04:05

I just think it would be fun. It was just something I thought of, and I'm all about at the moment: Why not? Do stuff. Live your life. Don't put things off. Don't just think about them as kind of some wacky fantasy and that it's not possible. You know, why don't do it? Like with the horse riding? And ______ got a skateboard. And then I was, I keep having these urges, wanting to skate again. And then I thought, Oh, you've got ______'s skateboard...

LILY  04:32

Yeah, use it.

JENNY  04:34

Have a go.

LILY  04:35

Hundy percent. I don't. I've got that. He's not getting that shit back... anytime soon.

JENNY  04:42

Yeah, but he might turn up in five years and I you know, in that time, I could be back in my...

LILY  04:46

Yeah, you can be like, 'I'll skate you for it, bro.'

JENNY  04:50

[Laughter]

LILY  04:50

And then do a cool trick and then you get to keep the skateboard.

JENNY  04:53

[Laughter] Could have a skate off!

LILY  04:55

Yeah, exactly.

JENNY  04:56

I'm seeing all these people on social media, roller skates are back.

LILY  05:00

Yeah, that's become a big thing.

JENNY  05:02

And I'm like, uh, no, I want to do skateboarding.

LILY  05:05

Do it. Just be really careful.

JENNY  05:08

I know. Like _______'s gonna get protective gear.

LILY  05:10

But- I still, the gear doesn't stop you falling.

JENNY  05:12

No, I know. I know. And it's not something you can practise on the grass, like you need to be on a hard surface [laughter]

LILY  05:19

Yeah, famously. But again, that's the fear, I guess, that we're putting to the side. And live your life, you know?

JENNY  05:25

Yeah. And I could just skate next to the nature strip and if I'm falling I just go over onto that.

LILY  05:32

Yeah, topple off!

JENNY  05:32

Anyway, it's just a thought. It's not necessarily something I need to do, because the horse riding is pretty- you know, the last ride felt a bit dangerous at times, but  Oh did it? also exhilarating. Well, I told you, I was like doing slalom through the trees. Going really fast. But it was great. Anyway, I just think yeah, carpe diem

LILY  05:56

Interesting. I really want to start the piano again. That's on my mind.

JENNY  06:00

Well, that's interesting, because I dusted it the other day, cleaned it. And I've covered it up to protect it because it's been open all that time. And I've put cardboard boxes around it to try and insulate it and put blankets and things on top. So yeah, and it crossed my mind: Maybe I could learn the piano.

LILY  06:19

Yeah, I would I Yeah, it's something now. It's just kind of entered my mind. And then every time I'm now listening to any kind of classical, I'm just like: I would love to play that and there's just so much emotion in it, to like be able to feel that. And I think

JENNY  06:35

Imagine.

LILY  06:36

Imagine

JENNY  06:37

You could do that. Yeah, well, it's there. It's there.

LILY  06:41

It is there. Yeah. Anyway, so it's on my mind.
