Lord, Teach Us To Pray
Although we can overcomplicate it, prayer is simply conversing with the one true God, Yahweh, our Father in Heaven, the Creator of the Universe. The Bible tells us to revere His position and remember to speak to Him in humility.
However, God can also handle the real, raw, cries of our heart as we see in the pages of the Book of Job, "The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord." Job 1:21 NASB In the Psalms, King David cries out to the Lord, but he always concludes with praising God and stating the truth about His love for His people despite the current circumstances.
When you pray:
1. Let Your Words Be Few. Approach God with humility and reverence. "Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore, let your words be few." Ecclesiastes 5:1-2
2. Check your heart motives: You may feel insecure or inadequate when you pray in public, focus on God, not on how you are coming across to the people around you. "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." Psalm 51:10 KJV
3. Pray without ceasing: You can pray while you're driving, doing laundry, when you rise, or lie down, before a meeting, or during a meeting. You can pray anywhere, anytime.
