Today’s guest Janine Pettit is smashing the gender stereotypes associated with RVing and proving how incredibly popular this lifestyle is among women. Janine is the founder of Girl Camper, she is also the editor in chief of Girl Camper Magazine, and she is responsible for a Facebook community of over 94 000 members. Today she takes us back to how she first discovered her love of camping and RVing and bought her first camper. She sheds light on how she established Girl Camper Magazine in her downtime during the COVID-19 pandemic, shares its successes, and gives some insight into what you can expect to find in each edition. She also explains how she is growing the RV community through her Girl Camper chapters, Camper College, RV shows, and other events, as the excitement continues to build for the Hershey America’s Largest RV Show in September. Apart from sharing her own love for camping and RVing with us, she also tells us the inspiring story of a widow whose life was completely transformed when Janine helped her discover the joy of camping. “I said to him, ‘Let’s take the kids to Europe.’ He said, ‘No way, they’ll never appreciate it! Take the money, buy yourself a camper and a tow vehicle, and go have some fun.’ And I did and I never looked back.” — Janine Pettit [0:03:50]

“We wanted to create a magazine in which we inspired people, we inform people, and we lead people. People are out there and they’re looking at what we’re doing, but if we don’t give them the tools to help them join us then we’re just being mean girls.” — Janine Pettit [0:06:38]

“If you’ve got your eye on an RV, a good thing to do is rent it through Outdoorsy, take it for a weekend or a week, see if you really like it, and then you don’t put your money down and get it home and think, ‘This kitchen doesn’t work for me, I don’t like this layout.’” — Janine Pettit [0:18:47]

“When I’m walking back to my camper at night and I see the little light on inside, I feel like my camper is waiting for me. I love getting inside of that camper at night. I get in my bed, I’ve got my book. It’s just so chill.” — Janine Pettit [0:25:01]
