Matt introduces the Contino Meter — a completely unscientific but highly accurate way to measure how much a Disney announcement actually matters to your own Disney life.

Not every piece of Disney news hits the same. Some announcements feel massive online but barely affect your next trip, while others may not dominate the headlines but completely change how you experience the parks. In this episode, Matt talks through the difference between Disney news that is interesting, Disney news that is exciting, and Disney news that actually moves the needle.

From Storyliving, overseas parks, boutique experiences, Disney Springs updates, and announcements that feel far away, to the things that really get Matt’s attention — Villains Land, transportation, nighttime entertainment, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, resort changes, and the Disney Bubble — this episode is part personal relevance scale, part Disney therapy, and part reminder that it is okay to care about what actually affects the way you do Disney.

It is not about whether an announcement is objectively good or bad. It is about whether it makes you say, “Now we’re talking.”

This happens episode nine of season one. We hope you're enjoying our podcast relaunch. And today we're gonna talk about a topic that I have mocked quite a bit in the past. But I'm calling this episode the continuometer. And it's basically about separating the noise from what actually matters. Like, think about this, right? Disney announces what a thousand things. They announce a thousand things every every year, right? And us Disney fans, this is like this episode is all about the pulse of Disney fans. How we're getting too high or too low, and we react to every one of them. All the news that come out, and not even it doesn't have to be a park news, right? And that's kind of what this is about. Over time, I've realized that not every announcement deserves the same amount of emotional energy, and that's where the continuo meter comes in. A catino isn't something bad, a catino isn't something Disney shouldn't do. A catino is simply something that has little or no impact to most of our lives, to most of our vacations. So what's what is a catino anyway? A catino isn't bad, it's not stupid, and it's not something that maybe Disney shouldn't do. It's simply news that matters to somebody, it just doesn't impact me at all. And I know that there's some people that are listening to this podcast that maybe when a Disneyland news comes out, that's a catena to them. They only know world. But let me give you some examples off the top of my head, real quick. Disney Adventure sailing from Signal. Man, I know the boat was outfitted from a German cruise line or whatever. And Disney made a great offer and they re-themed the boat. But man, the chances of me getting on a Disney adventure it's not impossible. But is it a couple decades away? Right? If they restation it somewhere. How about how about the heart of the catino? The story living by Disney. Disney's starting to build little communities again, right? And I think they, you know, they did celebration. And now we have Catino. Catino in California. And they're doing one in North Carolina. And it's great that imaginators are hard at work and building the clubhouse and the shared communities and the resort amenities at those at those places. But honestly, guys, they don't mean anything to me. How about how about this one? Some of you will be able to resonate with this one. How about when Disney talks about their member benefits only for DVC members? Like I am a DVC member and I'm still so far away from those members. Right? I can't sniff those lounges, guys. I can't. I can't sniff the moonlight magic. I'm just not worthy enough, right? How about the corporate restructuring? When I hear like titles change in, people I never heard of. Congratulations. And I know some of this stuff is like for shareholders. I get it. But whenever Disney announces one of these things, you know, I wish everyone the best. Catino. And today's episode isn't really about Disney. It's about how we consume Disney. So let's talk about the anatomy of a catino, shall we? There's different categories. There's the corporate catinos, the luxury catinos, geographic catinos, resale owner casinos, and announcement catinos. Let's get into some examples. Executive promotions, investor presentations, corporate milestones, quarterly earnings. How about how about when we listen to those investor panels and they talk about streaming versus linear? Right? And and again, for somebody that thirst on Disney Park News, they're all catinos to me. I don't care. I don't care about your streaming rights in India. I don't. It's catinos to me. It doesn't mean I have a high reaction or a low reaction to it. It just means I'm completely indifferent to it. It doesn't mean anything. And let's let's talk about again. We talked about the the promotions, the the musical chairs that's happening. For the most part, I don't care who is the director of human resources at Disney. I don't care. It's a catino to me. Are they gonna make better perks for me at the park? No, it's catinos, man. How about corporate milestones? I mean, unless it's back then with a celebration of some kind, a 50th, a 70th, 75th, whatever. Man, those corporate milestones mean nothing to me. Listen, I'm I'm glad that Disney celebrates their employees. I'm you know, the it's funny. I was down there at the end of January of this year, and Magic Kingdom, I had to squeeze Tron in, and I actually got ripped off, by the way. Um, listen how entitled I sound. But I'll tell you why. So we were at the the day that they closed Magic Kingdom early for um for the celebration day to celebrate employees with their with their long tenure, right? And they, if you saw videos later of it, you know, they whipped out a red carpet, they did some really great things for the employees in the cast. Cool, right? My personal thing was the park was open till 6, I believe. And I tried to get back in line for Tron at about 15 minutes to prior of um of the post, and they would not let me get in line. Now again, am I entitled much? I mean, I I probably would have been pretty upset if that was the only opportunity I got on Tron. We did get on Tron earlier, just a few hours prior, but still the operating hours said it'll 6 p.m. So it wasn't handled super great, but they just wouldn't let me on. Um, and that's not the only time that that kind of thing happened uh that week. Um, you know, just maybe put the operating hours one hour less then, you know, like so that at least people can prepare for it, but that's fine. I I know I'm probably coming off like an entitled jerk here. Um I didn't want to get in line after six, it was clearly before six. Anyway, no biggie. Quarterly earnings, man. I think when I first joined the Disney theme park fandom, I would get situated and made sure I could hear all the investors, um, all the investment panels, man, and the quarterly earnings. And they're somewhat interesting, right? They're not all continuos, but I love the questions at the end that just ask questions that are so irrelevant to my fandom. Most people like me, they want the great details on what's coming to the parks, right? And their other offerings. Not some crazy loophole that they're trying to figure out how to blend three or four streaming channels into one. Like, seriously, like some of this stuff is just fluff to me. How about the luxury catinos? Man, VIP experiences. When uh when I see things about VIP experiences where they're gonna cost $500 a person or $1,000 a person, dude, they're catinos to me. That's not happening. You know, it's so funny. I I really haven't given much thought to Lightning Lane Premiere Pass. Why do you think that is, guys? Well, I mean, why do I not give it a thought? Because it's not it's not realistic to me. I don't even think about it at all. It's the wrong that's a catino, that's a a catino type of luxury to me. You're getting lightning lane multipass. I'm sorry, light lightning lane premiere pass. And then ultra premium offerings. Right? The cabanas at Typhoon Lagoon or your little private little private cabana at you know on Castaway Key or there's a million of these, right? These luxury type of um boutique or or bourgeois, whatever you want to call it, um, experiences. They just mean nothing to me, guys. And then there's the geographic catinos. How about like adventures by Disney? You know, listen, I have travel agent creds. I'm not gonna say that I've that I'll never do one of these things. But to me, that's great. They added some uh itinerary in Egypt recently. That's a catino to me, man. First off, again, we could go back to the luxury catino. It's like the one thing that they have with the private jet where you can visit all the parks. Yeah, it's great, man. I'm I'm really I'm really excited for those people. They're all catinos to me. And Adventures by Disney at this point is a catino. It doesn't mean anything to me. How about we talked about the Disney Adventure being in Singapore and all the coverage that it got. They're catinos, man. How about how about when the Disney theme parks globally talk about their Christmas or Halloween offerings? Tokyo Christmas, Hong Kong Halloween, Shanghai Seasonal Entertainment. Look, they're all beautiful announcements, but they're not they're not changing my next vacation. And then on to the resale owner casino, man. Moonlight Magic, like we talked about. The the uh exclusive lounges, the exclusive perks. You know, I'm happy for all of you direct members, especially if you're listening. I'm just not invited to those. And then one of my favorite things, the announcement, Catino, and you guys all know this. Disney announces that they're gonna announce something later. And we just saw this recently with the Christmas parties. You know, Disney put up a mantle and they put up a few stockings over a couple days, but they were trying to breadcrumb to tell you that the announcement for the Christmas stuff was coming on, you know, June 26th or whatever it was. Catinos, man. If you're gonna announce that an announcement's coming, that's a catino too. Just by rights. And more on that, Disney will will string you along too, won't they? One of Disney's favorite things, right? Stay tuned. More details coming. Destination D23. Full reveal this fall. Check back later. You know what would have been better? The announcement. Just give it to us, man. Now listen, sometimes I get it. Maybe they don't know the full picture. They don't always have to know the full picture. But a lot of times they do, and they're just leaking out things slowly, because I guess their marketing department thinks that's what they should do. But think about how Disney stretches one project into, you know, a rumor that we hear, and then a parks block tease, and then a D23 announcement. And then we gotta wait another year for the destination D23 update, then it, then another D23 update, then a construction update with some imagineers doing videos and showing you behind the scenes more artwork. And then we get the opening date. One project, multiple announcements, maybe 10 announcements. Again, some of this is good, but it's it's teasing the announcement about the announcement, and that's what the Catino is. All right, let's leave that aside for a minute, and let's talk about the Disney fan personality test. I'm pretty active on our Discord server, um, hosted by my friends Jason and Phil from the DVC Pod. And I'm also a pretty frequent guest at WDW Magic Forums. You can find my post Matt Petto, M-A-T-T-P-E-T-O. And I've had a chance to really dive in and get pretty opinionated on a lot of different topics. Probably the most one that I was uh just a fixture on that really caused people to really come at me was my take on Muppet Vision 3D. You guys know that I've talked about that ad nausea, so I'm not gonna keep breaking that down. But my opinion was pretty simple that there was there could have been more reasons that Disney closed Muppet Vision 3D when it did, and it just wasn't about closing the land of save operation cost. Yeah, that could have been a reason, but not the only or primary reason. And I feel like with everything that's transpired, I'm I'm right about that topic. But still, I had a lot of people come at me about it, really hit me hard. So I want to talk about I came up with, let's see here, with five kinds of people that that really like to consume the actual news, right? And this is kind of off a catino, but this is more my love letter to the Disney theme park fandom, because I think you can put these people in all the same groups. One is you got the trolls, everything is terrible, and you can spot these people because they'll they'll end up having Josh Tomorrow as their profile picture with a real cropped up pick to make them look like he's like deranged, right? And look, man, the guy's a handsome guy, right? So if you're making Josh DeMaro look like, look, the range, man, you're you're just going next level, man. You got you got some demons you're battled, right? And and I'm not gonna drop names here, but you know these people. They're on the forums, right? They're on Twitter. And a lot of times the trolls, they'll mock everything and they'll comment to you with different things. Well, Disney will announce a price increase for the Christmas party, but in the same breath, they'll tell you how, you know, how weak sales are and how slow it is there. And Disney continues to sell out with these party tickets, man. They completely they except for Jollywood nights, that doesn't sell out every night. The other two parties, they sell out, right? And there's just so much demand for them. And they'll also be so so responsive on a Disney forum. I mean, listen, I'm I'm pretty responsive too, right? But they'll be super responsive to literally everything on a Disney World fan site. Like, what is going on? Why are you so responsive? And it's just because you're a troll, man. You just want people to see your posts, agree with them, and laugh at them, or you just want to be competitive with everybody. You don't have a strong opinion, you're just there to troll people. You'll tweet about Disney stuff multiple times a day, and we all know you're closet annual pass holders that keep renewing and you keep going. You're a fraud, you're a troll. And then these the art articulated grump, right? That's my next group, the articulated grump. And these are people that are, I would I would categorize them as intelligent, smart, well written. Some of them have really great backgrounds, and they'll even fill you in with on art, on um, on construction, on project engineering. Like some of these people are smart. And man, I could pick up a lot of information from these people, but then you realize they haven't enjoyed anything about Disney in 10 years. And every post will begin with the problem with modern Disney, it's the macro look. You can't get over all these micro decisions. You're so focused on what you believe is a macro issue that you don't give Disney the benefit of the doubt ever. Well, I'm excited about tropical Americas. Yeah, you know what? So is everybody. That's not a bold take. Everybody's excited about tropical Americas. They replace the carnival, man. That's not a bold take. So I appreciate the articulate, because you know what? Sometimes I get something out of those people. I really do. And some of them have good opinions, man. Like, and that's the thing, opinions they can differ. But they're not trolls. They don't deserve that category. They're not there just to dump nonsense. Even if they're just super constructive and they're being super negative, there's value in their post, right? It's still annoying sometimes. And then there's the nostalgia purist, you know, and these these are other people that I happen to respect quite a bit. One of them produces amazing videos. I'm not gonna name drop, you know him. He's he does great work in the community. And unfortunately, he's checked out, man, on Disney World. He's checked out on it. It's a shame. But everything peaked with Epcot Center and MGM Studios and Dreamfinder and Horizons. Like I get the nostalgia for those things in the past. The Osborne lights, they look beautiful, gang. They did. But it's also dated technology, right? And honestly, you could go to a lot of your a lot of your neighborhoods and see light displays like that. And again, I think these are very MGM rose-colored glasses, right? That as well, as good as those lights were, we still got a a proper land out of it that runs the whole day. And you're not looking at street facades. Give me Galaxy's Edge over the Osbourne lights. I know some people just really have uh uh, you know, they just think that the 1990 or 2000 or 1980 experience was the best at the world. But man, listen, I get it. You know, Disney was always a company for profit. Like, I and it's you know, I've again good poster at the forums believes his his dream is that you know Disneyland becomes a museum. Like it's just not it's not in reality at all, man. That's not what they're about. They are a pro it is a profit machine, and it doesn't mean that things now are are worse off. We didn't have the Skyliner back then. We didn't have four parks, right? We might have had one or we might have had two. Were things always better back then? Yeah, you could swim in the in the water, and now and now obviously you can't do that anymore at Bay Lake. Like, I get it, man. Some things are changed because of safety, some things are changed because of operations, some things change because they're not making money. And it's okay to have nostalgia for the past, but sometimes people just get so stuck in the past that they refuse to accept any change. The carousel progress has polarized the fandom once again. They want that show to be preserved forever. And it wasn't even the original show, but there's a place for your nostalgia and your memories, and a place for new stuff and for new memories. There is. You have to open your heart a little bit. And we did go through kind of a rough time with JPEG, and I understand that. I understand, you know, cutting some of the recent perks and the bean counters and the fact that there was no construction up, you know, after Tron and it took Tron forever. Like I know that there was all kinds of stuff, all kinds of things that would really make you think that the executives at Disney were these cold-hearted stinks. I don't believe that about Josh Tomorrow. It doesn't mean that I think he's a saint, but I don't think he's wired that way, man. I I've seen the way he acts with people. All right, the Optimist. This is the category I put myself in. And I aspire to be in. Disney isn't perfect, Disney isn't terrible, but maybe experience it first, judge it second. And I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than permanently disappointed. I'll never forget there was a post about test track version three. And for the most part, it was pretty positive in the beginning. And somebody got on there and w and and made a negative comment and some other negative poster that I would probably put with let's say the art articulated grumps, right? But they got on there and said, see, I told you I knew I was right. Like they were excited. That like Test Tracks version 3 didn't live up to somebody else's standards. It was a bizarre post. Like, that excited you that somebody else didn't like the attraction? Like, where's your fandom? And I kind of find myself, and I think many people that that listen to this podcast is the optimist. Yeah, you know what? Losing rivers of America is gonna be really a tough sightline thing to kind of view in my head if it's gonna be an improvement or not. But it was just a big river, and yeah, it connected the rides. It connected, like, let's put it this way. There was way more attractions around Rivers of America now when there was canoe things and boat expeditions, right? Now it replaced the river boat and replaced Tom Sawyer Island, which Tom Sawyer Island has had its quirks, quiet spot. There's other quiet parts of each part that you can find. Maybe not as much in Magic Kingdom, to be honest with you. But they just build one in Hollywood, they build one in Epcot. Animal Kingdom has all kinds of wandering paths. Magic could probably use a little bit of it, no question. But Tom Sawyer Island, not accessible, right? For all. And it's valued capacity. They're gonna put two attractions there. They're gonna draw way more people than the riverboat. Way more people than Tom Sawyer Island. And they're gonna build paths that are walkable so that you can get the villains land on both sides. So, will I mourn the riverboat? Will I mourn Liberty Bell? Yeah, and I think that could go in the nostalgia memories, right? But I can't wait to see what's coming. I can't wait to see if they can pull this Piston Peak ride off in this new area that I help that I hope is like what's out west with Grizzly Peak. You know, that's what I'm hoping for. So I guess my message, kind of the way I'm wired, is I want to give it a chance. You know, I was the biggest happily ever after fan, and I still am. But when they did Enchantment and they had it go off the first night, and I kind of watched it, I got sucked in. I thought, you know, this is a good show. I didn't hate it. I didn't understand why they changed it, and I still don't. I guess they just wanted to have something unique. But it wasn't like it wasn't like they went from Happily Ever After to, I don't know, a clown show, right? It wasn't like that. And I and I guarantee you if you looked up the reviews for it, it's probably like, you know, on touring plans, Disney Enchantment is a nine and and happily ever after is a nine person. It's like it's probably something like that. But I I was willing to give it a chance. I think that's the reasonable approach. Give things a chance. Look, I didn't like your stuff to be a bug to go away. We got batteries together. That's not a show I liked. Now I want to give it another run, but I really didn't like it at all. And that's not a a hot take. A lot of people don't like that show. But overall, I'm optimistic about what's coming. All right, and then there's the Pixie Duster, right? And I guess maybe I float in this area, but everything is magical, every attraction is perfect, every cupcake deserves five stars, and no criticisms allowed. I think that there are people like that. I don't think I'm one of them. You know, this is where I think a lot of people think that all Disney influencers are. And honestly, I think because I have a little footer in my um on my profile um that that I have this podcast, people think I'm an influencer. Looks listen, Disney's never done a darn thing for me, guys. You know, in terms of compensation or or conversations with them, like seriously, guys, like I'm a fan because of of things that I pay for, I get. I don't know how else to say that, right? And I and I feel like that's the pixie duster. The pixie duster, if you want to say there's certain influencers that just, you know, they just think everything's perfect, and yeah, maybe they're paid off by Disney a little bit. I think that there's people that fall in that camp. I think it's less than you think. But sure, I I still think it deserves its own category. So what do you guys think? Do you guys agree? You got the trolls, the articulated group, the nostalgia purists, the optimists, and the pixie duster. You guys agree on those five groups? I'd love to hear your thoughts. And look, I agree that there's criticism that's due. There's constructive criticism versus professional complaining. I criticize Disney because I love Disney. I don't criticize Disney because I enjoy criticizing Disney. Huge difference, right? It's the intent. Like, for instance, somebody recently posted about Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind that it's I don't think they said it's perfect, but they said they're not going to hear crap on Guardians. And gang, that's probably one of my favorite attractions, right? No question about it. But does it have flaws? You know it does. Something that's all screen based, something that pre-shows are a one-and-done, something that I feel like the cue is pretty uninteresting, something where you have the giant big blue box that is visible in spots from World Showcase. There is some flaws with Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind. Is it exactly what Epcot needs? Oh yeah. You needed something in your lineup to give Universal Sea World a run for its money. You needed a thrill ride. As much as I love Soren and Test Track, you needed something that was going to grab kids and young adults. But the theming, the theming's just okay. I mean, it's a cool starship out front. But what makes it special is the same thing that makes Tiana's Bayou Adventure. At the heart of it is it's just a really fun ride. It's a great roller coaster that's smooth. Tiana's is a is a logflume with scenes, right? But could it use some animatronics? Of course. Could I use probably a better story? Absolutely. Will I still drop $15 on Lightning Lane Single Pass the next time I go? Oh 100% I will. So again, there's that balance there. And then I always kind of, this has been a long tease that I've mentioned to you guys in my previous episodes, but I think it's like the Epcot Beacon test. And I and you've heard me say it before. If you hate the Epcot Beacons, you probably hate Air 2. Epcot Beacons doesn't do anyone any harm. It's beautiful to see, it's innovative. You can't see it during the day. It puts on unique shows each night. Absolutely gorgeous. So if you hate the Epcot Beacons, it's probably you. Sometimes Disney just nails it. Beacons is an example. Some people want Disney to fail. Some people don't watch D-23 hoping to be excited. They watch hoping to find something to complain about. Oh, Lakeshore Lodge looks like the Dime a Dozen resorts or hotels. I haven't seen anything since Animal Kingdom Lodge. I don't 100% disagree with you, but I think I think you're being a little harsh on Lakeshore Lodge. I really do. It's going to be pretty nice. Now, is it going to be nice staying at Fort Wilderness? I don't know. Might disturb your views a little bit, but it looks like a unique hotel with the A-frames, the cabins out front, the Lazy River, the amenities that it's going to offer. It looks really cool. And honestly, it's as a resale owner, I'm getting a little FOMO there. Okay. I might want to get in so I can I can book something at the Riviera with my points. Or Lakeshore Lodge or Disneyland Hotel. Alright, now we're talking. I've handed out a lot of catinos today. I talked about the type of Disney fan, the Disney theme park fan, but let's flip it. Because there are announcements that immediately make me stop what I'm doing. And this is the stuff that actually changes vacations. Capacity improvements, example, new lands, new attractions, new theaters, capacity projects. You might not love the Monstropolis idea, but man, pull it up on Google Maps. Google Maps just updated the the um the map view. Pull it up. Look how much expanded capacity, expanded land that that attraction's gonna do. That that attraction's gonna provide. I don't know why they stuck it in in that exact position so far away from the old Muppet Vision 3D building. My speculation is that they're gonna connect that with other lands at some point, either from the east side or the west side. I could be wrong about that, or maybe they just had to put it there so that you don't see the box everywhere in Hollywood Studios. I don't know. They would know better than me. But just take a look. It's adding a huge footprint. I couldn't go with animation courtyard, but all those things, they add capacity and capacity changes everything. Less waiting, more vacation. Yeah, they probably need some more spinners and that kind of stuff in Hollywood Studios. I agree with that. And maybe we'll get those still. How about when they make a transportation announcement? Skyliner expansion, walking piss, boat transportation, monorail improvements. If Disney announced a new Skyliner out tomorrow, I'm canceling my afternoon, man. Like I'm pumped up. Transportation strengthens the Disney bubble. And entertainment. A great strength for Disney. And I know I'm sure it was better back in the day. I'm sure those nostalgia ones are talking about citizens of Hollywood and mainstream, but there's a ton of entertainment still at the parks. But people don't remember the cue lines. People remember happily ever after, fantastic, starlight, luminous, live music, streetmosphere, character interactions. Disney creates memories through entertainment. And the resort improvements. The older I get, the more I realize the vacations start to check in. Better restaurants, lounges, resort entertainment, atmosphere, spaces to simplify, enjoy better restaurants, lounges, resort entertainment, atmosphere, spaces to simply enjoy Disney. Those are all things that make my trip better. And none of them are casinos. None. An atmosphere. Even the little things that they do music, landscaping, smells, kinetic energy, the little details. Look, nobody books a trip because Disney planted another tree. But everybody notices when the atmosphere disappears. Look at what they do in Animation Four Yard. Look at the plus I mean, look, maybe launch bag is a poor example. They plus that area. If they weren't gonna build this super elaborate attraction behind in that space, this is a huge win. And things that improved every guest's vacation. Shade, benches, walkways, bathrooms, better hours, transportation, capacity, entertainment could be seasonal or permanent. These don't win D23, but they improve millions of vacations. And bigger isn't always better. Disney fans always ask, what's next? Sometimes the answer isn't bigger, it's better. So what makes me refresh Disney Parks block? Transportation, I'm clicking. Nighttime Entertainment, I'm clicking. Cacity, I'm clicking. Resort improvements, I'm clicking. Corporate restructuring, I'll catch the recap, gang. I'm out on that one. The older I become as a Disney fan, the less I care about. Usually what gets the loudest applause at D23 when the Muppets show up and it's nothing. It's just the performance. Or when the music comes on and they're delaying in between the announcements. I'm watching because I want to know what is going to improve the theme park experience for most of us. For me. Alright, I thought it'd be fun to kind of close the episode down with rapid fire patinos. You ready? Disney Adventure Signport, Wrong Hemisphere, Katino. Tokyo Christmas. I'll watch it on YouTube, Katino. Hong Kong Halloween. Looks awesome. Catino. New Disney Springs Luxury Store. I'll walk right past that. Catino. Disney Springs shopping event. My daughter's care it. Catino. New Loungefly connection. I'm sure it'll sell out, Katino. Limit edition pin. I hope your eBay listing goes well, Katino. Disney Eat Guides. I'll give that one a half Catino. I'll decide when I'm hungry or when I'm there. New popcorn bucket. Congratulations to everyone already online. Katino. Corporate reorganization. I hope the new business cards look great. Catino. Investor day. Wake me when Josh talks. Catino. Trademark filing. Wake me when the concrete gets poured. Catino. New spirit jersey. My closet says no. Catino. Story living phase two.
