#189 – China: From Copycat to Global Innovator with Dr. Gang Lu, Founder TechNode Group
When Dr. Gang Lu started writing about China’s tech world, it was never meant to become a company. It was just a blog he kept during his PhD in the UK while reading TechCrunch every day. Years later, that blog turned into TechNode, then into a bilingual media outlet, then into events, and finally into Beyond Expo in Macau.
Gang looks back at a time when Western coverage of China was dominated by two words: copycat and censorship. He explains why the copycat label once had some truth to it, why it faded, and why today the direction of inspiration often runs the other way. As he puts it, copying no longer makes sense because the two ecosystems have grown so far apart.
We talk about hardware companies that keep surprising him, the fierce competition inside China, and the differences between early founders and the younger generation who grew up abroad and now return with new mindsets. Gang also describes what it felt like to move from hobby blogger to founder, why he still sees himself as a geek, and why smart glasses might become an everyday device once they stop being heavy or awkward.
