Special Guest for this week's show
The Golf Homie, JP Sovereign joined us for the show this week and it was a blast getting to listen to his perspective of the game. JP is a relatively new player to golf and it's bitten him HARD! He's only been playing for a few years and has already logged nine trips to Bandon!
We chatted about the Portland Golf scene, and his experience at the LIV Portland event. We dabbled a touch on some Presidents Cup talk and what took place with Max Homa and Danny Willett. Man, that was a costly 3-Putt.
We wrapped up the show talking about Bandon Dunes. If you enjoyed our Bandon Preview and wrap-up shows from earlier this year, you'll love this one as well.
A big thank you to JP for hanging with us. Be sure to click on the link for his IG up above and give him a follow. He has some great content coming out of the PNW!

JoeStill waiting for you to top that one intro. You're you're getting there though.
MattYeah, I I got um I get I got notes when to uh come in and come out. I'm trying to I'm trying to make it sound professional, you know. Oh man.
SPEAKER_03See what we're dealing with here, JP?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you guys are you guys are tryhards for sure. And I'm just playing. That was pretty professional right there, I feel it.
MattUh this is episode 183. Eventually we're gonna hit the mark and be like, damn, these guys actually know what they're doing. Totally. So uh Mr. Uh Golf Homie, JP, how you doing today, man?
SPEAKER_04Doing well, brother. Thanks so much for for inviting me out.
MattNo problem, man. Uh Joe has been a geeky fan of the Pacific Northwest for a long time. And uh he got to experience Bandon uh earlier this year and has fallen in love with the place. Chills already right now. Uh I just got some good spots myself, so I feel it. It just goes instantly, instantly. See, Jeremy, this is what you're missing. I know. Goose, goose. So, hey, tell everybody a little bit about yourself, uh, what you're doing up there in the Portland area, and uh what's going on uh with your golf life.
SPEAKER_04Well, I am JP Sovereign, um native of the Pacific Northwest. I was born and raised in the Portland area, um, still reside here. Um I just got into the game actually just a few years ago. So like middle end of 2020, like a lot of people um found golf and very quickly became a sicko. And so now I just eat, sleep, and drink the game when I'm not at work or at home with my wife and my my little cat. Um and and yeah, man, like I started a social media account because like all of my friends and family were tired of like seeing my my golf shares on my main gram. And so I just uh actually my my first account was called Suck My Par. Not a lot of people know that.
JoeOkay.
SPEAKER_04That was the that was the first name. And then we transitioned to something a little bit more.
JoeIt's like some Nardir stuff there. Like Nardwar would ask you that.
SPEAKER_04It was kind of yeah my par. Just trying to be, you know, trying to be controversial. That's my that's my nature. So no. Um, but yeah, once I got into the game and started kind of posting regularly, I I met a lot of people through social media um in the golf scene around here and then and then abroad, obviously, like all over the map, it feels like, which is how I got connected to y'all. Um and I fell in love. I mean, specifically, I think the the biggest impact um that golf has had on me is my first trip to Bandon Dunes, like like we were probably gonna talk a lot about on this on this episode. Um, when I went to Bandon for the first time, it kind of just changed my life and my perspective of like what golf is and um what it means for me personally. And you know, I've had a lot of opportunities to grow um both as a man and like as a golfer um in just the couple years that I've been playing, which has been a gift. Um, the game can bring you some highs and some lows, as we all know. Totally, totally very quickly too. Oh gosh, before you even know it, you're uh you're feeling like throwing a club. So um but yeah, that's a little bit about me. Um now I just like I golf as much as I can up here. Um blessed to be able to play year-round, even though it does start raining and doesn't stop for about seven months out of the year. Um but I'm uh I'm sick for it, man. I just anytime I can be out on the links with with good people and um you know experience the game, that's what I want to do.
JoeWhat's that beep? Sorry, I think that I think that might be my neighbors here. Someone's pizza's ready.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, somebody's pizza's ready or somebody's breaking into a car and is like Portland area after all.
MattOkay, I got a question for you. Since you're new to the since you're new to the game, um how has how has golf presented itself to you? I I know you you're kind of a standout individual, you kind of do your own thing. Not really a rules follower as old school golf would would say. And I hey, I don't I'm totally cool with that. I I'm not a uh old crude, I guess you could say. But how how has golf treated you and and how you present yourself to it?
SPEAKER_04That's a really great question. Um it's kind of funny actually when I started uh when I s when I first started playing, I look I remember looking in my closet and then like shouting out to my wife, like, babe, I don't have any golf shirts. Because I didn't like at the time I did not own a single polo. Um I've always kind of been like a you know vintage threads kind of uh streetwear type of person. And so um I honestly felt pretty uncomfortable, I think, like my first like six months, six to eight months around the game. Um, because I think I was trying to fit in with what I saw around me. Um and so it took me some time to kind of realize and learn that like golf, like golf can be whatever you want it to be for you, and like the way that you see and share your life with other people is the way that you can like see and share golf with other people. Um and so like I think I I think I definitely was like rubbed by the by the old head mentality that like you gotta be tucked and um you know make sure your polos on. If you don't wear golf attire, then you're gonna you're not gonna be able to play. Um but I I think just you know through different accounts on social media, especially Instagram, um and also just talking to people who have been in and around the game for a long period of time, um, I kind of learned that there's like a lot of avenues around the game. And I think I've just wanted to be a proponent of creating more uh more opportunity for more opportunity for people to just be themselves around golf and like not be a gatekeeper in any way, shape, or form, but um be more of like a like a greeter, like yo, like what's up, who are you? Like, welcome to the game, right?
JoeSo um yeah, it's so cool nowadays. Like there's you know, there's a stigma for sure, right? And there's so many like brands and people out there that have completely changed it in the past few years. Like it's it golf is streetwear, golf is uh Manhattan's golf is old fashions, it's cigars, it's hip hop, it's like there's so many avenues to take it in, and that that's what's so dope about the game.
MattYeah, you had have have you had any run-ins with some old school mentality players?
SPEAKER_04Uh definitely. Um there was actually there was a reel of mine that um it kind of like you know, it had it got a few spins on Instagram, and I was wearing, I was on I was at Pacific Dunes. I was playing Pacific Dunes, I think it was I don't know, 14, one of the coastal holes. I can't remember exactly which hole it was. Um and but it's on the back nine. And I was in a t I was in a t-shirt and wearing some uh they're actually Nike Golf, like they're like sweatpant capris, like sweatpant material, but they're capris, and they're like Nike Golf made them. I don't know if they ever released them because I got them kind of under the radar, but um I was wearing some like some capris that look like sweatpants and a t-shirt at Pacific Dunes because it was like 65 degrees no wind in January. And so I was just taking advantage of that, and somebody commented uh somebody commented like um you look like a hobo. Uh quit disrespecting the game. And uh we kind of we kind of had words, and a bunch of people that I knew on the on the gram just kind of went after this guy, and he was like sending me like pictures of his uh like his private jet and like his stacks of cash and just saying like you don't belong in the game. Um so I'm definitely like that was like my first real experience of like dang like people really actually feel like he's like you're standing on Halloween grounds, like respect the game. Um and I just was like I was kind of taken back to the roots of golf, like yeah, because all those shepherds were wearing polos and you know, like tucked into you know, like when they were creating this sport that we all play.
JoeYeah.
SPEAKER_04Um it's just like I feel like golf with a lot of things, like it started in one place where it's like it's this thing that we do to to pass the time. Um, and then it turned into like you know, the West, the West had to like go and like dip it in in uh corporate America and then.
JoeOh, dude, the West killed it, man.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So that was like my first experience. And then, you know, every once in a while I'm showing up to a golf course, like depending on where it is. I always like I try to like brush past the dress code, like at least respect it if I'm going to like a private, a private course or something. Um like I I you know, I'm definitely gonna pay my respects to like whatever their expectations are, but I'll try I like to challenge a status quo as well.
JoeOh, for sure. I I rocked when we played Solstice, I wore a t-shirt. I think I took my hoodie off after like four holes and I rocked a goat hill t-shirt the rest of the year. Yes. Shout out to Goat Hill. That's the spot.
MattYeah, with I I wore a uh I had a t-shirt underneath and a and a pullover on top of it because it was the breeze was kind of making it cold and then warm and cold and warm. I mean, it did feel weird being out there in a t-shirt, I'm not gonna lie. But that didn't bother me and I didn't I wasn't like clown and Joe going respect the game. No, I it's it's it's gonna take a long time for the golf mentality to change, and and I think it's going in a good direction right now.
JoeI mean, just like the Zoodie debacle, what, three months, two three years ago, like people were tripping out about a hoodie on it.
MattLike, get out of here, man. And now everybody wears them. Yeah. Everybody wears them.
SPEAKER_04It's funny, there was actually a there's a um there's a club out here, country club out here, that sent out a memo to all of their members. Like, I think this was last, like end of last year, saying that they do not allow hoodies on the golf course of any kind.
JoeRidiculous, man.
SPEAKER_04So like if you show up in a hoodie, like they will they'll literally kick you out. That's crazy, man.
MattNo, you get you get down down in the south too. There's some well, you'll you guys, Joe, you'll find out when we go to Atlanta. There's there's some can't wait, man. Places down there that Joe is still stuck in 1860. Well, we know that we know. Uh so what what's your uh go-to home track, I guess you would say?
SPEAKER_04Um, so the there's a track like probably 10 minutes up the road from me here in Oregon City, which is where I live. Um, we're about 20 minutes south of Portland. Um, and it's arguably like probably I would say nine out of ten like regular golfers in the area would tell you that it's like top two, top three tracks out here as far as munis go. Um it's county-owned. The property is county-owned. Um, and then actually uh one of my best friends from high school, her dad, his management company runs it um and manages the course. So that's my go-to track. It's called Stone Creek Golf Club. Y'all can look it up.
JoeYeah, uh post about that.
SPEAKER_04It's uh it's a Jacobson design. So Peter Jacobson, he's done a lot of the tracks out here. Um I'm not sure if you're familiar with who that is, but um he's a Pacific Northwest native, and uh yeah, he designed Stone Creek. It's definitely like a tail of two nines type of course. Like the the front nine is like you know, it's it's pretty, it's it's all beautiful, but like front nine is gettable. Back nine we call the gauntlet. So um it definitely kicks your kicks your teeth in a little bit on the back nine, but it's it's a beautiful track, and I'm like so lucky. It's like also one of the best draining courses around here, too. And when you get a lot of rain like we do, whatever turf is not squishing underneath your feet is like where you want to be.
JoeSo yeah, you need that. We get monsoons out here like crazy, and these courses just like don't soak nothing in and turn into lakes. Yeah, exactly.
MattYeah, the ground sucks up the water for about 20 seconds and then it's all on top. Clogged.
JoeThe uh one question we have asked previously on the podcast is like we're noticing like a huge onslaught of like players, and it's hard to get tea times and price increases. Are you seeing that up there too?
SPEAKER_04Um yes, yes and no. Um it just kind of I think I think this summer you we kind of started kind of finally seeing a regression. Um, so like a lot of people who picked up the game, maybe during COVID, right, were throwing their sticks on on like offer up and Facebook Marketplace because they because golf's hard, right? Because it is like it's it's not a it's not an easy game. Like it's not just like you know, picking up a basketball and shooting hoops. Um it takes dedication. And so I think a lot of people kind of were like, yeah, I had my run, like going to the driving range while it was cool, um, and getting out playing. Yeah, I mean when you when you can play golf like kind of year-round and have it be like pretty reasonably like conditioned, like it is over there, I feel like it might be a little different. But out here, like six months out of the year, half the guys that I know don't even play.
JoeYeah, fair weather, fair weather golfers out there.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. Yep, a lot of that. So, um, but I've definitely seen, and there's definitely been price increases. So just because you know it's it's regressed as far as how many people are actually getting out and playing, there's still been um you know a steady increase in tea time and you know what greens fees are costing and um your the opportunity to get a tea time, especially on like the good parts of the day. Um weekends are like insane. Um, but I'm more of like a twilight golfer, anyways. Like I like to play either early morning or afternoon, like when the sun's either rising or going down, just because I feel like it's more beautiful, anyways.
JoeTotally.
SPEAKER_04Um but yeah, it's gotten cra it's gotten crazy. There's a couple tracks. There's actually one I played on Sunday, which it's a it's a Muni. Um, but and this might sound like like cheap to you guys because you're down in Vegas, but um it's a it was a hundred dollars for like a wow 1 p.m. tea time um on a Sunday.
JoeWhich that's pretty wild. That's special.
SPEAKER_04Like a hundred bucks for a Muni, like it's um it's one of the top munis in in the area, like probably top three, like up there with Stone Creek, but I was just like, it hurt, you know. It's like that's wild. It's 50, it's 50 bucks or you know, 50, 60 bucks maybe um peak hours at Stone Creek. So and those tracks aren't very far from each other in terms of conditions, like they're they're really close. So it's it's definitely, and you've seen a couple there's a couple other tracks too that are like that, like Pumpkin Ridge, the public side of Pumpkin Ridge is like stupid expensive, it's over a hundred dollars around.
JoeYeah.
SPEAKER_04Um, unless you're playing like a Twilight or something like that, and it's still it's like 75 bucks. So geez, man, that's crazy.
MattYeah. So did you go out to the live event?
SPEAKER_04I did. Yeah, I was there the first the first two days.
MattAll right. You're the first person that we've had on the show that has actually been to an event.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
MattSo let's let's hear it. Uh totally however you want to say it, whatever you want to say, just let us know what you thought of it.
SPEAKER_04Well, I think that's like I might be coming from a different perspective than most people because I am kind of newer to the game, and so I don't have like this affinity. Like, I wasn't watching golf when Tiger Woods was like, you know, winning major championships. Like I literally started playing golf the year after he won Masters. Um and so and I never saw him through his heyday. Like I remember maybe it being on like when I was at my grandma and grandpa's house. But um I don't have like this affinity for like the history of the game in the same way that other people do. Like I respect it and I appreciate it and I love watching like you know old tournaments and stuff like that. But um, in my opinion, it's kind of like, oh, this is kind of an interesting take on golf. I don't really care, like I'll be honest with you guys, like as far as live goes, I don't really care about the like if somebody wins, I'm like, cool, somebody won. But it's not like where were they playing? Which tournament was it? Which which is definitely it's a lot like more like that for me watching the PGA tour, like certain events I definitely want to tune into. Um, and it definitely matters to me who wins. Um, but being at the actual event, it was my first ever pro golf event since I started.
JoeYou guys don't get a you you don't have anything else up that way.
SPEAKER_04L PGA tour, they they come here every year, but uh which which just happened this last weekend. Um, but but yeah, no like no PGA events up here anymore. Um and so it was definitely a treat in that regard. Like, and also what a lot of people told me, like I was there with um a buddy of a couple buddies of mine, and they were saying like they've been to them, they've been to the masters, and they're like, you have no idea how special this is. This is such an intimate setting with how close we're all able to be to all of these players. Like, these are some of the best players in the world, and we are literally standing like like right next to them on like every shot, every T-box. You could be just like right next to them. Um, and so the level of intimacy that I got to experience, like watching some of these like all-time great players tee it up was special, in my opinion, and watching like how those dudes have hit the ball is different. Um makes you just want to go to the range and like and then also like maybe give up. Um but yeah, man, like it was it was really cool. I've really enjoyed it. The way that they laid out that tournament, like at Pumpkin Ridge between like the private and public side, they literally took the best holes of both sides. Um, and so it was a really cool layout, and it was really fun to watch these guys hit it because you were like standing on the T-box and you're like, Yeah, I don't even think I could I could get get the ball through the fairway, let alone, you know, like get home in five. Um, and so it was it was just it was cool. It was it was definitely um you know special. I got to I got to dap up like DJ and Lee Lee Westwood and um Phil and like you know saw saw Bryson hit it on the range and um so it was cool, you know, like being able to be exposed to that.
MattNow did you go to the LBGA event?
SPEAKER_04I did not. I was I wanted to go on on Saturday, but I had to. So I'm coming off of a I just worked almost 90 hours last week. Oh, good lord. So I was basically dead to the world. Like three thirty. I was like working 3 30 a.m. to 6 30 p.m. every day. So um and Saturday morning I had to work like four hours in the morning, um, which is like my sixth day in a row. And so I was uh I was just like dead to the world.
JoeYou were thinking about it, but it was it wasn't gonna happen.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I wanted to go on Sunday, but I had a buddy's birthday party, which is why I went out to that other track and played yesterday.
MattSo uh one of our listeners, Chris Torres, was chatting with Joe earlier and was saying that he is starting to see a little bit of the players getting annoyed with the music and the crowd chants. Did you see any of that out in Portland? I know it was only the second event and they didn't have some of the premier players that they have now with it. But did you notice anything like that? Did anything catch you off guard? Like this may be a little bit too rowdy for professional golf, or did it seem fine?
SPEAKER_04Um, I definitely noticed myself actually like on the second day, especially, um kind of being a little bit of like a referee out there with some of the crowd. Because like some people just some people that were there watching, like watching these guys play just had no idea like what golf is like. And like also like it's hard and the greens out there were rolling crazy, and that you know, it's just like show some show some respect, you know what I mean? Like these guys are playing like for big money, and also like they're taking this seriously, so show show a little bit of respect. And like people just didn't really know where to be or what to do, like they were just kind of like three sheets to the wind, just having a good time. Um, and so I kept you know, it was a few times where I was like, yo, shut up! Like um quit moving, like, because people don't they just don't know. Um and I think that's part of that's part of like the Portland area, like not a lot of people get to go to pro events, so they don't really know like what the etiquette is. Um but I I didn't I saw a couple players, uh Louis Use isn't actually um he got pissed off a couple times um at some at some people in the crowd just because they just they just you know they kept talking or like they were like walking like straight across like beat like on the other side of the hole from him while he's getting ready to putt, like from like 25 feet, you know, and it's just like come on. Like he like he like stepped off his ball like three different times and then his caddy kept like screaming at people. So, you know, you definitely see you I was definitely seeing that, and I was kind of like, oh I wonder if that's just part of this like little bit of vibe. Um like I've never been to a PJ event. Um, so I don't I don't have anything to con you know contrast it against, but interesting.
MattYeah, that is interesting. Yeah. I I uh I didn't watch much of it this weekend. The the only highlight I've seen is uh Bryson getting taken out by a a rope. Yeah.
JoeI love seeing that though, man.
MattSo they got the the clip that they're showing a lot of, but have you seen the video of the other person from behind like to his left and in front of him that was recording? Because the audio is is hilarious when he's like, Fuck, come on, people, what's wrong with you? And then he's bent over, he's like, I can't see out of my right eye.
SPEAKER_04But like you can also see from that angle the um whoever like one of the volunteers was he was actually the one holding the rope.
JoeYeah, yeah, I saw that.
SPEAKER_04And so like nobody in the crowd was actually touching the rope. It wasn't like it had nothing to do with anybody. It was like, no, dude, like squat a little lower when you're going underneath the rope, I guess. You know, like what are you doing? It's nobody's fault. Yeah.
JoeOh, that was awesome.
MattYeah, I was I was I was waiting for the you know how that's it's it's got kind of a Euro vibe. I I was waiting for the guys to come out on the stretcher like they do in freaking soccer games. All them off. That would have been that would have been hilarious.
SPEAKER_04Did he keep playing? I guess he must have kept playing, eh? I have no idea.
JoeI think he did. I didn't watch much at all. Like like you said, like I I really don't care who wins at all. Like right, I cared more about Max Homo winning Fortinet, and Fortinet is Cam Smith won, and Joe, that was Joe's boy. Yeah, I love Cam Smith, man. But now he's it was sad.
SPEAKER_04I was I'm not gonna lie, it was kind of sad seeing seeing Cam Smith go because he was like just starting to round into form, and it was like this dude's gonna rattle off like 10 wins on the PGA tour this next season, right?
JoeAnd then it's just like time to go nuts. Yeah, I I was sad to see him go. Not like I not like I care uh that much. Like do what you want to do, but like right. That dude could have been like a champion, man.
SPEAKER_04Legend.
MattLegend, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I mean he's he still is. He won, you know.
JoeThat's true, that's true. But I like I don't care that he I don't care that he won. It does, it doesn't seem like it means anything.
SPEAKER_04Right. I just yeah, I just mean like his last major victory, though, right?
JoeBefore you know, oh yeah, oh for sure, yeah. That was huge. But it's oh yeah, yeah, it's definitely sad. Yeah, maybe in like 50 years it'll matter that that he won. Yeah, I mean, who knows? Who knows what's gonna happen? That's the thing. Like, could it there's so many roads this thing could take, and it's it's captivating the entire golf world, which which is cool and it gives us something to talk about on a podcast all the time, but like Yeah, so here's gonna take some time.
MattI'll do a quick little pro stuff here. So uh Taylor Montgomery, uh friend of ours, uh UNLV golfer, still trying to get him on the show, but now that he banged out a top three, he may be too good for us. Um, but yeah, uh shot a 64 on Sunday, just made some ridiculous putts because he I don't know if uh well JP may not know, but there used to be um what was the putting competition called um that was real popular where they had the stadium up behind Planet Hollywood. Uh do you remember what that was called, Jeremy? I did it a couple years too, can't remember. Anyways, but he won that one year. Um, so hell of a putter. So that was cool to see. Um took home $552,000 in his debut first on the PGA tour. First start on well, I mean, as a tour player, he was playing a couple other events. Played at Tory. Uh so when he started the day, he was five under and got to 13 under uh by himself in third, 552k. If he would have stayed at five under that spot, paid 24,000. Wow. So congrats to him for banking a cool half mil. Yeah, dude. What are you making on? He can take that money that the PGA tour gave him and say, here you go, don't need that anymore. Thank you very much. Um, and then Danny Willett. Uh, did you see the three putt? I did I saw it, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I did. Jeremy, did you see it?
SPEAKER_03I did. The the laughing smiling was a broken man. Oh my god. That was really hard to watch.
MattOh, and and it started when when Max made that chip because he was laughing and smiling that he's like, ah, yeah, he's still got a fucking short putt to win this. Go to hell. And then he three jacks. Uh so that putt cost him five hundred and sixty-eight thousand dollars. Oh my gosh. Right?
SPEAKER_03So and I mean, what's I don't know what his status is coming up, but I mean that also potentially knocks him out, yeah.
MattBut uh, I mean he still took um eight hundred and seventy-two thousand, so not a bad day. But uh yeah, that was a half million dollar putt that he missed to win the tournament.
SPEAKER_04That's gotta just crush your soul. Like, I mean, it would crush mine, like half a mil.
JoeDude. And from like eight feet, eight feet. I don't even think it was eight feet. I think it was four feet. Was it four?
MattYeah, I thought something it was four feet. Yeah, the second putt was longer than the first.
JoeInsane, dude.
MattYeah, I was I was watching the highlight with Erica and I'm like, hey, watch this. I said he he makes this, he wins $1.4 million. And he missed it. She goes, ooh. I said, hey, if he makes this, he goes to a playoff. She goes, ooh. It's like the most interested she's been in golf ever.
JoeUh I love Max Homer, though, dude. I'm happy to see him. Oh, I was so happy to see him win. Dude, Homer top three at one play with.
MattHe played so good. Uh Harry didn't have a good tournament, missed a cut by a couple strokes, but it's gonna happen.
SPEAKER_04But uh I think Max is poised to go off this year, too. Oh, for sure, dude.
MattThe those stingers he was hitting, oh my goodness, just amazing and so smooth. Just so it doesn't look like he gets flustered at all. And just as I love such a vibe. Great vibe.
SPEAKER_03And like that's like your ideal PGA Tour pro grinding for years, failing, failing, failing, and then just going off. That's the story you'd love to hear. Yeah, for sure.
MattYep, and then and this is the uh the thing that I I love about the PGA Tour that you don't uh you can't get on live. There there was 140 some guys that teed it up, and every single one of them had a chance. Every single one of them, all they had to do is play well, they can have it, they can have a chance. And it's just when you got 48 guys, they're the same guys. I mean, Dustin Johnson is light and live up, that four Ace's team has won four events in a row since they got Patrick Reed and uh Perez, and it's just it doesn't seem here's the thing, right?
JoeLike last year when we were talking about or last week when we were talking about the odds, like the betting odds, like I said 250 to one, Byeong hun on. Like that is not a bad pick. And he was he was running it like dude almost won. He was close. What do you end up like fifth or something? I guess 250 to one at the bottom, and was almost there. That's what's so good about this time of the season, like where not everyone's in it, like anybody can win. It's like any given Sunday. Like, it's I love that.
MattSo uh JP, gotta ask you. Uh are you excited for the President's Cup?
SPEAKER_04I'm actually pretty stoked. I think it's gonna be fun to watch. Yeah. I've never I've never watched one, so yeah, last one was 2019, right?
JoeThat was Royal Member? Royal Member.
MattHow much have you done to drink, Joe?
JoeUh just a few. You drink in Rose? Uh no. I'm I'm you know, I'm more sophisticated nowadays. I am a golfer, so I've switched to whiskey, bourbon, old fashions.
MattOh making your own.
JoeI'm trying to cut the weight. I was drinking white source beer. Trying to get that swing speed up for Georgia.
MattYep, that's what I got. This right here. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm drinking crystal white lemonade. Crystal light lemonade.
SPEAKER_04I'm drinking water, so oh man. Okay, remind asking the question again, pres President's Cover. Yes. So I've never seen one, so I'm I'm just kind of stoked to watch the vibes. Um, I'm assuming, or at least from what I've heard, I've you know, it's kinda similar to the Ryder Cup.
MattYeah, it is. It is the Ryder Cup, basically, but it's USA and internationals, not Europe. Right.
SPEAKER_04So uh being able to watch, you know, some of the best like tee it up against each other and like see a team format. I love watching a team format, that's just fun. Um when you can get behind your your country, your squad, um, and just go go nuts for a few days. I think everyone's gonna get a little rowdy, which is always a good time to watch. Um but yeah, I'm stoked to see it. And plus that that track, man.
MattYeah. I was watching uh live from the President's Cub, thank God that's back on uh this afternoon. And they actually have changed, they call it the Green Mile, which is uh 16, 17, and 18. That is now 13, 14, 15, and they're playing hole nine, eleven, and ten or something like that. They're the the closing holes are different, right? They they mixed it up.
SPEAKER_03Interesting.
MattYeah, um so the the the closing holes are now because nine is now eighteen. That's what it is, and then ten is now seventeen or sixteen. So it goes sixteen, then seventeen, eighteen, and they're crazy long. They said that it's almost sixteen hundred yards, those three holes. Wow.
SPEAKER_04Oh my gosh.
MattYeah. Wow, right?
SPEAKER_03But I mean, eighteen is like a such a good finishing hole.
MattIt's an icon, but it's it's now it's not, which I that's what I'm excited for. I didn't know they were doing this. Chamblee was talking about it and showed showed the change that they're doing. I'm like, holy shit, that is I mean, having those three holes, that stretch in the middle of the back nine is amazing.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_04Made things really interesting.
MattOh, for sure. Yeah, so okay, there are guess how many rookies on both teams combined there are.
JoeThey gotta primary primarily on international team.
MattWell, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I don't know, but yeah, probably more.
Matt14. Wow. What? 14 out of 24 first timers.
SPEAKER_03Because there's so many guys that left the international team. Yeah.
MattAnd well, and you got DJ that's not gonna be there. Patrick Reed that's not gonna be there. Not that he would have been there, but um so the first timers for the American team, uh Scheffler, Burns, Horschall, Morikawa, and Cameron Young.
JoeOur oldest solid though, solid.
MattOur most uh tenured or most um what would it be experienced President Cup golfer? You know who it is? You know who it is?
SPEAKER_03Tony Fino.
MattNope.
SPEAKER_03Rory Rory.
JoeRory. Rory likes Valhalla.
MattI don't know.
JoeI said he's not on the American team.
MattHe's not even playing. Jordan Speed. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Um and then on the international side, uh Tom Cam, Corey Connors, Mito Pereira, Taylor Pendrith, KH Lee, Sebastian Munoz, Christian, Bazaden Hoot, and Cam Davis are all the rookies. It's crazy. You know who their most uh players are? Yeah. And what what appearances is for him?
JoeSound like some might well be placed on the US.
SPEAKER_00Close?
MattTenth.
SPEAKER_03It was his tenth. Looking at looking at the roster unique look. Yeah. It's like the most unbalanced team, but I think the USA. I think the USA needs to be careful.
MattThere's some sticks. There's some sticks. Uh that Tom Kim, he just won uh at the end of the year last year.
SPEAKER_03He's got Ricky's caddy.
MattYeah, he's he's a stick. Uh Sung Jay is a stick. Matsuyama, you know, he's always gonna play well. Adam Scott's been playing great lately. Siwoo Kim has been playing good. Cam Davis. I mean, there's they got some players. It's it's not gonna be a walk in the park.
SPEAKER_04Rory's on the Rory's on the international team, yeah?
MattNo, yeah, he didn't get in.
JoeHe uh that was my fuck up. He's on the European. He's he's Ryder Cup. He's Ryder Cup. He was talking about how Can you not be both?
SPEAKER_04Uh-uh.
MattOh yeah, this is like uh But Rory loves him, so like that's Canada.
SPEAKER_03Interesting. Yeah, Rory's won there more than Square Hollow.
SPEAKER_04Rightfully so. Next Ryder Cup, though, is gonna be so good. Yeah, for sure.
MattOh well, yeah. That's I was watching the DP World Tour this weekend because that's the course that they were playing in Rome. They're gonna be playing it.
JoeOh, dude, a Dare Manor looks so sick. Wow.
SPEAKER_04So sick track. So sick, dude. That's one of the tracks that I it's on the list.
JoeLike, oh man, big time.
SPEAKER_04I drove, I drove right past it when I was in Ireland a few years ago before I was even into golf and was like, what is that? That looks cool. Come to find out it was a Dare Manor, like that place is crazy.
JoeDude, picture perfect, man.
MattSo how how many places have you gone around to play golf? Like states or yeah, wherever. How where how far have you broadened your horizons from Portland?
SPEAKER_04Well, I've been uh I know you've been to Bandon. Yeah, Bandon is like where I live when I'm not here. Um, but I've been as far south as San Diego, so played a few quite a few tracks down in the San Diego area. Um and then as far east as Montana, I played a couple of tracks out in Montana.
JoeUm good golf out there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, what what kind of sucks? What's that uh what's that Nicholas track?
SPEAKER_03Uh Anaconda?
SPEAKER_04No, it's yeah, it's in Anaconda. What is it called?
SPEAKER_03Uh Old Works.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, Old Works. So I was story time. I was going to I was gonna go to Old Works um on our day, the day that we were leaving, because we were in Helena for a wedding. And the night before we had had a very good night, um, and we're up until like three in the morning. Um, just one of the one of those ones.
JoeYeah.
SPEAKER_04And my wife the next morning was just under the weather. She was under the rug for sure. So kind of so kind. Um so we like I had loved like to the point where like I loaded up the entire the entire car. Um like she was just in the passenger seat, like, uh, you know, and so I was planning on driving down to Old Works, but I was like, I felt terrible about the idea of leaving her in the car for four hours while I'm out there playing Old Works. Um, and it was also like two hours out of the way to get down there. And I was like, well, this means uh that we're definitely gonna have to stay in Quarter Lane tonight if like this is you know, it's not a bad idea. Well, that was the plan all along, anyways, but like there wasn't like a slim chance that we're gonna be make able to make it like all the way to um like La Grand area, like Baker City, which is kind of like eastern Oregon. Um anyways, she uh she wasn't doing well, so I kind of made the executive decision. I was like, I'm gonna have to I'm gonna have to pass on old works this time around. And then like come to find out, like I've been talking with this dude um on Instagram for a while who lives like out in Missoula. And he's like, he's like, have you did you play old works when you were out in Montana? I was like, no. He's like, wow, man, you missed such a treasure. Um it's all it's like now it's like how long have you been married?
JoeDude, it's tough.
MattUh we just celebrated our our two-year anniversary in the you get up to 10, 11 years, she'd have been sleeping in the car. You'd have been playing.
SPEAKER_04I know, no kids, like we're only two years in though. So yeah, it was it was one of those uh those game time decisions that I just was like, well, take one for the team. And actually was what's crazy is I actually ended up driving all the way home from Helena that that day. So like I was just like, well, what's what's another five hours, six hours in the car? Like, let's just make the haul.
JoeLet's just get home.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So I yeah, I was a little bit sad, but didn't didn't get to play old works. I played this other track called Canyon River, which is in Missoula. Um sick.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Sick golf course. Like kind of got like a prairie style, um, runs right along this this Canyon River, literally. Um, and that was that was a good experience. The other I played like a Muni and in Helena, that was nothing to nothing to write home about, but dude, there's so much golf out there.
MattThat Eastern Oregon drive is a yawner, man. Good god. I think driving through Nevada is bad sometimes. My mom lives in Boise, and so we've gone from Boise across to the coast, and uh it's brutal, man.
SPEAKER_04It's so it's so flat and so boring, and just yeah, it's not a not a good time.
JoeHow far is that?
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh. That's on the list too. I was actually gonna try to get in get in that track this the end of this month, but my my buddies who were supposed to go with me, like nothing really worked out on the calendar. Um, I just did a little uh work with Suncadia, which is a resort kind of like two hours away from Gamble Sands. And so um I'm I've got like a stay and play up there that I've got a book at some point in the next year. Um so what I was gonna do is like hit Sunkadia and then go and do gamble as well, like on the same trip and then just make it a loop and come back. But not this year, gonna have to like you know put that one on ice until next season. Yeah, um, just because the weather's gonna be a little bit more.
MattIt's my number one course in America that I want to play. Really? It's on the well, I've I've got a lot of good ones off my list so far, but that I've had so many people that I know that have gone there that said, so underrated, so amazing, you definitely need to go.
SPEAKER_04Well, I've played, I mean, I played Chambers a couple weeks ago, and that was that was on my list for uh quite a while. Um, and it's I think it's it's Chambers, uh Gamble Sands, and Aldera are the top three tracks. Like they all like kind of switch places in like the top three in Washington state. Um, so I gotta get gamble. I've got a buddy who's a member at Aldera, so I'm I'm hopefully gonna get up there at some point too, this maybe even this season. So um, but yeah, gamble, dude.
JoeWhen we flew out to Bandon for the solstice, we flew into Seattle, and I was like, I was trying to talk, I was trying to talk Madden to like screw our trip from Seattle to Eugene. Like, let's just get the car here. We'll stop at Chambers and then hit Bannon. He wasn't having it. Chambers, no ick, man.
MattThe reason why I wasn't having it is because uh a week and a half prior to that, I just did like 4,000 miles where we drove from here all the way up to Linden, Washington by the border. Yeah, we did a we we did a family trip where we did uh Mount Rainier, Olympic National Park, and then Cascade National Park. And okay, and so yeah, so I had just done that drive.
SPEAKER_04You're like, hell no.
JoeOh we went like dude, I'll drive, like, not a big deal. Big chambers, bro.
MattWe went from Seattle, we left Linden, drove to Seattle, stopped in Salem to visit uh Willamette College for my daughter, and then drove down to uh Klamath Falls, and I was like, I told you guys no, I'm not doing it again.
JoeI was trying to leave the airport to go get some coffee or something. Yeah, I wasn't down. We had like we were we had an over uh layover. What how long were we in that Seattle airport? Like seven hours, dude.
MattIt wasn't seven hours, it was like four hours, especially when you're trying to go to Bandon.
JoeYou're like, dude, let's get the fuck on with this.
SPEAKER_04You know, you guys flew from Seattle to to uh to Eugene or to Eugene, okay.
JoeYeah, we did Vegas to Seattle, Seattle to Eugene.
MattOkay, I got a buddy that lives in Eugene, and we were gonna go play a course out there, but they had some rain damage, and so we ended up playing a different course, but that's why we were going to Eugene.
SPEAKER_04Which one were you guys gonna play?
MattUh Emerald Valley. Okay.
JoeGreat. Have you played it? Not yet. Great course. We did Diamond Woods instead, which was still super sick.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was fun. They got some they got some good tracks out there. Oh, we made off at like six o'clock.
MattEugene Country Club is sick out here. Yeah. Oh, Eugene Country Club is amazing. It is you're walking because we played that the first year I went to Bandon for the solstice, uh, buddy that I travel with quite a bit. He got us on Eugene, and oh my goodness, it the turf out there, it's just it's fake. It doesn't even, it just doesn't look real. It's so green and so soft.
JoeDude, I born born and raised in Vegas. I've never seen a place greener in my entire life than Eugene, Oregon. It's crazy.
SPEAKER_04So green. It's a beautiful place. I would yeah, I don't I don't mind Eugene one, but I have a friend actually, um, she's a photographer, like does a lot of golf stuff. She's from up here. Um, she just her and her husband moved down there. Sophie Mc McFowl. I don't know if you guys follow Sophie on Instagram, but she's a good follow. Um but she she just moved down there, and so Eugene is Eugene Country Club is now our home track. So she's always just like throwing up like just bangers from Eugene Country Club. you if you just want to have some golf envy.
MattSome of those holes are just incredible.
JoeSo next next June before the solstice we meet new gene play the CC.
SPEAKER_04You guys just fly to Portland. I'll drive your asses to Bandin.
JoeHonestly, that's what we said. When we flew out there, I was like, dude, we should have just drove the we should have just flew into Portland, dude. We went to the we went to have the layover like may fly into Portland. Who booked the flights?
SPEAKER_04Who booked the flights I'll put you guys up at the house here and we can play a track up here and then the next day we'll just drive down to Bandon. We'll all go together.
JoeSo before we got on the call, right, Jeremy was talking about because Jeremy was going to be down for the solstice because I want to hear this. Why is Jeremy not down for the solstice next year anymore?
SPEAKER_03Uh oh so here's here's what the conversation that Dan and I had in the cart the other day. Dan's the other guy that because Joe and Matt are now a package deal with the solstice.
JoeSo now me and Dan I don't want to miss another one in my entire life. It's in it's the most incredible experience in your life.
SPEAKER_03So two things. So one huge chunk of change. And I have really I have like long-term commitment issues. So if I'm going to go play golf I need like two weeks and I'm in like I'm fully in. A year that's kind of tough. Not a year nine months. The other thing we talked about this this might be something that you could shoot down really easily. I'm almost embarrassed to say this. But it seems like to enjoy the courses more you need to play them and take your time instead of rushing through them in the solstice you've never done the solstice right JP I haven't nope not yet.
JoeBut how many courses have you knocked out at Bandon in one day? You've done 36? Have you done 54?
SPEAKER_04Yeah I've done 36 um I did 36 and preserve um that's like the most golf balls I played in a day down there. Actually did 36 the preserve and shorts which if you count shorty's um that's what we did our first day there this last day it's but I mean this is just my opinion like once you get to banded man like the golf like your body it just enters a different like it just like enters a different level of like I can play golf. Forever and like yeah like your legs just will not stop moving. If you have golf in front of you you will see it through like that's just how it is at Band. Like I don't know at least for me like you know obviously you you know it can it can wear on you especially if you're used to riding and um I know down there in in Vegas it gets hot as it gets hot as hell and so you y'all ride like a lot but dude it's something about the it's like somebody was telling me that that the town of Bandon is in like there's several places in the world that are like this vortex of like magic. And like literally like it's scientifically proven that like Bandon Oregon is in that board like one of those vortexes of like it's just gotta go stand in the stones in the c in the in the lodge.
MattJust gotta go stand in the middle of the stones and you're good to go.
SPEAKER_04Oh it just like I don't know like I feel like I could play as as as many holes as I can get in I'm gonna get in until it's like until I can't see my golf ball.
JoeDude I wouldn't have stopped I wouldn't have stopped like we did we did uh trails wasn't in the rotation this year so we did uh we started on Bannon then we played pack and then we played uh Mac and then sheep and then I talked Matt into doing preserve because that's really all the time we had left so we did 85 I there's no way I would have stopped if there was still more signs. Oh I was I was still ready to go I was I mean the next day I felt like I died but I was the it's the most magical place I've ever been for golf like there's no way there's no there's no way anything tops that place there I just I don't see it happening.
SPEAKER_04I've said this before like like Sand Valley looks awesome I don't see it be beating Bandon I don't see Pinehurst beating Bandon I don't see anything beating Bandon like it's just like I wouldn't have stopped like you said there's no way like I had you know did that ease your mind at all Jeremy it made it much worse now he's going Jeremy though like I don't I don't think that I mean what would be what would be doable um for you man especially like if you're you're more of like an on a whim type of person is like if you can get time off especially with work or you got a flexible schedule like let's look at the weather and then like two to three weeks out we'll just make sure that there's going to be some decent weather and you can just like fly up here in the off season like January February March and fly to Portland and we I will take you myself we will go down for like two days and just like play bandit because like you can at that point on tomorrow. Yeah you could walk yeah like you can there's always golf there's always tea times available like a lot of people who who you know live out of state like they don't get the opportunity to go down like go that often because usually you're gonna stay on property but like the thing that a lot of people don't know is that if you don't stay on the property um like you could book your hotel out like three months in advance on just or like two months in advance and then call like two weeks ahead and schedule goal. So that's another way to do it just to like get kind of get your feet wet or get a band in experience in especially because like flights from from Vegas to Portland are so cheap. Yeah um like so cheap. And then like you know during the off season like it's a it's 150 bucks around a hundred I think a hundred bucks around at a certain part of the year it might be like 120 now but I mean and you can get like I went I mean and I don't know if they told you they probably did but in January this last year or I mean this year there was like 43 days straight of sunshine.
JoeYeah yeah ban Diego like like yeah San Diego yeah you know you know yeah um that's what I've been telling these fools like let's just go in January but everybody's scared that it's just gonna be downpour cold but like my birthday have you ever told you I wouldn't go in January so because you posted the other day that you booked your your you're gonna stay on property for the first time in January. Yeah after you posted that I was like uh let me look what's available right now and I saw I saw December I was like like a week before Christmas uh could I do that could I pull that off and I was thinking about it I didn't do it but you can catch like and that's the magic abandon like you can you can catch some 70 degree weather in the middle of December or January or whenever and it's it's gonna give you whatever it wants to give you that's the thing like whatever you're meant to get out there that's what sideways that you know totally fill fills your shoes in five minutes which I've had I've had once but I've been nine times and only been ran down once so yeah it's gonna give you what what it needs to give you that's the thing. All right.
MattLet's let's get the the JP Bandon Dunes ranking gotta everybody's gotta have a ranking all right so I break it up by like um golf holes versus like golf walk so that like I have like kind of two different like two different like top top courses.
JoeOkay.
SPEAKER_04My favorite my favorite walk at Bandon hands down is sheep brand like it's just it's just so good.
JoeIt's like a stroll like you're in the park.
SPEAKER_04You're in the park but like you're just especially that like final stretch you know like 16 and 17 like there's just something about walking to the green on 16 and then just like standing there. Like I've got like I've got the largest goosebumps right now that's why like you guys will follow me on the gram. Like you see like I post 16 Sheep Ranch all the time because it's just like it's the one place that I've stood like I've had tears streaming down my face standing on that green. Just because there's I don't know man like there's something about the entire property. You're looking at the entire property but you're also like you look like you just like even if you just look down the coastline like you're so far out in the middle like in the middle of the ocean kind of right um that like everything every you just feel like you're in a separate world. Like I'm not even at the coast anymore. I'm just in the middle of like golf paradise. But it's like this moment that I just feel like everybody everybody needs to experience that like 16 at sheep ranch.
JoeHere's my thing on 16 at Sheep Ranch I I flew the green on what is that three that part three where it's the double green yep so I flew it so I flew it to like the 16th green and I walked down there. He got it early and I got I got the experience way too early. Like it hit me I was like holy shit what is this like I I need I should have I wish I didn't hit my ball too far off the green because that moment like on 16 would have just been like way too epic and I just I experienced it too soon. I think I actually had the same exact I had my I had my long on number three too and yeah it was it was kind of a little bit hill and you're just like whoa holy shit I was not prepared for this moment.
SPEAKER_04I didn't like look around like I didn't quite hit it like that far to where I was like fully around the corner so I couldn't see the entire hole but I just like saw there and I was like what is this and then somebody wouldn't let they wouldn't let Joe putt from down there.
MattThey told him to pick it up and go to a drop area. Yeah yeah they didn't want people putting down there anymore and I'm like that's kind of BS but I mean I get it there's balls coming in from the T box so yeah yeah and depending on where the wind's blowing like you can get rock in the forehead so for sure especially because everybody tries to flight one in there and like not everybody knows how to flight one and so I hit the the first we played in the afternoon on a uh we got there Sunday so we played Sunday afternoon after trails and it was it was a little windy wasn't crazy but I I hit I think a five iron off the T and then in the solstice I hit driver. Yeah yeah so it was ripping oh it was like 50 mile an hour wind how the ball was staying on the T was I mean and this was our last round and so that home stretch you know as you're coming back towards uh the 18th T it's it's all downwind or all upwind and I don't think I've ever had more fun putting a ball in the fucking ocean in my entire life right there was that video of him hitting on the on the the champions tees for 17 that are right next to the 16th green yeah uh oh my goodness that was unreal it was a blast oh my gosh so what's next after sheep so sheep ranch favorite walk um second favorite walk at bandon is gosh it's probably gotta be OG Bandon um I think that like just some of the some of the views and the way that like the way that the grains disappear um that first hole so epic first hole at Bandon yeah it's so good I call that the volcano yeah that one's pretty sick um I man there's so many good holes like that short that short part four that you have to that you have to hit like uh no it's on the front um that you have to hit like a I don't know you can hit like a you could probably hit like a five iron six iron five iron six iron or you can hit like a three wood um but then you like because it's like that like sharp dog leg right yeah and then it opens up and there's the green and there's the ocean and you're just like what yeah that that hole is oh that's got I mean that might be my favorite like one of my favorite golf holes on on OG Bannon but um OG Bannon's probably number two for a golf walk.
SPEAKER_04Three is gonna be trails all day because trails just is so sick. Four as far as a walk goes um old Mac and then I don't know it's probably Pacific Dunes then old Mac as far as the walk goes um Pacific isn't Pacific which is this might be controversial but like Pacific's not one of my favorite courses at man it's probably because it's like kicked my teeth in so much just the green complexes at Pacific are so they're just so crazy. They elude me because like if you're just not nice with it off the T all day at Pacific like and you're in any poor position and like I just try to like you know I try to be a hero probably a little bit too often when I'm at Band. It's just really hard to score well at Pacific Dunes especially in a wind or in you know in some weather so Pacific kind of yeah it's it that's the reason why it's lower on the list. But also like very underrated uh as because like I think the big courses get all the attention but like preserve is probably like it's if if we're just like rating like golf holes and like views and like what the heck is this preserve is right there. Preserve is like right there top three like greatest part three course ever ever. Like no one can tell me otherwise it's so you played have you played preserve barefoot? I haven't yet no changes I'm planning I'm planning on it with this with this you know big trip in January like I've I plan on doing all the things that I haven't really gotten to do because I'm not staying on property.
MattYeah so we play we showed up on Sunday morning played trails went to sheep and then did preserve after that right is that what we did yeah that sounds great right and so Joe says I'm gonna do this barefoot because he's heard all the rage about doing it barefoot and I'm like after solstice no this was before the solstice I didn't play I didn't play barefoot until solstice until the last round you did didn't you I thought you played no play played barefoot the last round yeah are you sure I know my jury's still out on that one because I was I was like you're crazy to go barefoot when we got the solstice coming up because you're gonna step on a root or you're gonna step on a twig it doesn't matter what's gonna get into it it doesn't really matter anyway. Preserve barefoot is the greatest golf experience you'll ever experience in your life and we did it as the sun was going down and so the last holes the last two holes were in the dark it was incredible. Oh that sounds like a good time we we we leave preserve we leave sheep we go over to there and uh my my buddy Scott who's a caddy out there he caddied for me for the solstice he met us and we tell him like hey we're gonna go play and they're like uh just so you know there's no services out there so if you fall you're on your own okay I think we we we'll be okay we'll be okay but oh my goodness that was dude three club challenge barefoot at Preserve after playing 72 is the greatest experience of my life so far.
SPEAKER_04It was so much fun so much fun I love the holes out there like Preserve is just I've played Preserve every single time I've been to Bandon except for this last the last trip that I took um man and it's just because we couldn't get on it was so or no it was it was shut down because of the um the junior amp. Oh yeah you couldn't you couldn't play it during the junior amp which kind of sucked but really that's weird. Yeah they had like they had a bunch of like camera stuff like set up over there to be able to like get like on a couple of the holes yeah so it was just they just shut it down for for a while but um okay so favorite golf courses abandoned as far as the golf holes number one for me is old Mac. Nice um that's just in my opinion you just have to hit so many different shots out there to even so many advanced is the course you can be the most creative on. Oh by far and there and there's just some some sick complexes out there like some of the green complexes they're so big they're so freaking insane they're that first part three was it four or five no not the second part three on the front the after that long ass par four that green is insane depending on where the pin is too like you can almost hold out on that on that one which is kind of wild like if it's short left like front left that little bowl area yeah yeah man like I I put one I the last time I played old Mac birdied that hole I I nearly got a hole in one that was like second closest I've ever been to a hole in one I had it that was like 12 or 13 inches away from the hole. Wow you did you just because you just hit it in the right spot and it just like trickles down that backstop and it's just like this is this is the sickest thing ever.
JoeBut you get in the wrong spot and you're four putting so dude when we were there we because the pin was up front left in the bowl and me and um our playing partner for the solstice we were on the back fringe like straight ahead back fringe and it was like they were betting us like this is three putt guaranteed $20 on it we bowl two putter which was sick.
SPEAKER_04Let's go that was that was funny like triple tier um this the crew yeah the creativity you have to have to like have a decent round at at old Mac is just you know it's just so fun.
MattAnd I'm just like a walkthrough history dude yeah so much good stuff like the you know the ghost tree hole like that's just like just right out right out of the E Ritz hole yeah yeah I mean punch bowl like there's so many um did you see that they're they're building a a sports bar yeah that's gonna be nice that overlooks 18 oh man that's gonna be so amazing yeah they said they said it'll be done I think July of next year June July next year so pretty pretty stoked about that um so number one is old Mac by far uh number two is trails um trails is just I don't know how you guys feel about trails but man trails it's my it's my favorite course yeah it's such a yeah I I'm I'm trails old Mac.
JoeTrails for me it was it was like the first like golf experience I had out there and I was just so hyped up dude like I was like so stoked to be there and I shanked it off the first T like first two T shot yeah first two T shots that first T shot's no joke though you have no idea what the hell you're doing sometimes if you look at it you're like where the where where's the golf course? Yeah I was so pumped dude I was like so stoked to be there and it just it took me six seven holes probably to calm down and yeah I need to trails is the number one course I need to play again because I I didn't fully digest it.
SPEAKER_04And when you're so hyped on your first round I feel like I tell this to every everybody that I bring to Bandon for their first time which I've had a handful of guys like go with me down there like very first experience um I tell everyone like okay so first thing that you need to know about your first round at Bandon is you're gonna putt like shit. Yeah second thing you need to know is you're gonna be so out of your element because it's like it's so insanely like awe inspiring just being on the property and like seeing the golf seeing this this type of golf because you've just never seen anything like it in your life um that you're you're gonna probably overpack so don't overpack like put a couple like leave a couple of clubs in the car. Like don't bring everything that you think that you might need just like grab half of it. Because that'll just make your experience so much more enjoyable. You won't be over as overwhelmed like trying to like you're gonna be forgetting stuff like you're gonna be making sure that you have all your it's just like pack light and just enjoy the walk as much as you possibly can for your first trip. Because yeah it's gonna it's gonna rock your socks off. So yeah number two is trails number three this one's hard um I'd probably say number three has got to be OG Bandon it's just man there's some bangers out there on that on that golf course and it's just like you know first track and a lot of people I I always tell people I love 18 at Bandon at OG Bandon and they're like why and I'm like nobody understands that but I just like there's something about having such a wild experience like especially for your first time if that's like your first time ever being near the ocean playing golf there's something about coming around like coming around the bend and seeing the lodge just in all of its like glory right there and like that that 18th green that's just a gray golf hole anyways Bandon feels like you're playing golf in the Lion King bro like that's that's what I thought like I'm like I'm playing golf in the Lion King movie.
MattHe's in the Serengeti.
SPEAKER_04Oh it's just special man and like yeah my first trip to Bandon we had like a six club win both at Bandon six six to seven club win at both at Bandon and at Sheep. Um and that so I think like my like I was just survival you know like golf didn't matter it's like you hit the ball in the air and it's like it's going 10 yards.
MattBut but man like those those those freaking holes are so Matt makes fun of me because I like pretty much cried when I stepped on 16 T box he was in we were at we were at the airport in Salt Lake waiting for our our flight home and and he's looking through his photos on his phone and he comes at 16 and he he's got grabbing a napkin and he's doing this shit. Like are you fucking crying right now?
JoeDude that I respect that so much. Yeah that moment on 16 was like special man just taking back to a special place.
SPEAKER_04Yep yeah Okay, so three, um, and then four, it's probably gonna be sheep. If it's gonna be pack dunes. Um, I don't know. Like, pactoons has some crazy good holes. I don't know. I'm probably let's see, that's the thing, is like you could switch it all up and it's all okay. It's yeah, that's I mean, like you can't do it. They probably they're probably gonna keep switching places. And like I've the last time somebody asked me this question, they were a little different. Um just after every trip, I think like I like one one course will grow on me a little bit more and it'll like change places, and then I'll go and have a better experience at a different one, so then that will change places. Like it just I've been nine times now, plan on going 150 more, and um it just never gets old. I can I gotta learn more about the the golf, the golf course and Lynx golf every time I'm out there.
MattUm and I'm just absolutely are you are you gonna entertain doing the solstice? Is that something you want to try and do, or is are you much more just a casual 36?
JoeBecause Jeremy's out, so we we need someone else.
SPEAKER_04Um I would, I mean, I'm definitely not opposed to doing the solstice. Um what I honestly would love to do, um, and maybe I'll maybe I'll do this for one of y'all, but I would love to come and maybe not play the solstice, but come and carry the bag for one of you guys.
MattOh, there you go.
SPEAKER_04Or like switch it up, or like just like, you know, um just to just to be out there for the solstice. Um I don't necessarily want to loop the entire thing carrying the bag, but um but carrying the bag. Yeah, there are not. Um and the ones that the ones that do, like they deserve to be in the caddy hall of fame. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um Scott's a trooper.
SPEAKER_04I yeah, I can't even like, especially if they're if you're double bagging, like, no, forget about it. No, forget about it. Um you better be yeah, you better be carrying like six clubs and in like the lightest bag you've ever seen.
MattUm you better not lose a ball because you've got three.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, three, three, and you're holding all three of them.
JoeSo this is one of the things that they gave us for completing the solstice, right? It's a Seamus head cover.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
JoeIt says uh Survivor on it, it's got the solstice logo inside, 72 on the top, and it has all the logos on it.
SPEAKER_04That's so sick.
JoeDo you know?
SPEAKER_04It's a little blurry, so I can't quite see. You'll have to send you off to shoot me a picture of it on the gram or something, but that's sick. Seamus does some cool stuff for them. Seamus does cool stuff in general, but yeah. Um, okay. I think I got them all. I mean, that's the thing again. I gotta shout out Preserve because like Preserve is just Preserve is like just connected to a band any banded experience. Like I tell everybody, like, if you're gonna go, like, you can't skip the preserve. Like, even if you don't get to play all the courses, don't skip the preserve.
MattDon't skip preserve.
SPEAKER_04In fact, in my I tell like Preserve would be my first stop at Bandit.
JoeI think on my rankings, Preserve ended up where where did Preserve rate on mine? Two, two seconds behind pack, your least favorite.
MattI think it's a great way to introduce yourself to the facility. 100% is playing preserve. Yeah, totally. Okay, so if you get a hole in one on the preserve, does it count?
SPEAKER_04Oh, absolutely.
MattOkay. You're a new golfer, so I gotta ask, because a lot of people a lot of people will will say uh par three course, par hole in ones don't count.
SPEAKER_04A hole in one is a hole in one. Thank you. If you if you see if there's a box to fill in a score and you can put a one in it, it's a hole in one.
JoeYeah.
SPEAKER_04You know what I mean? Like, I don't care where you are. Doesn't have to be a full round of 18, it can be nine holes. You can sum it all in one.
MattOn a closest to the pen contest, if you get the closest to the pin but don't make the birdie putt, do you win? These are these are dilemmas that I have as a running golf league.
SPEAKER_04I feel like if you don't I feel like it's one of those things, it's like you yeah, you kinda almost have to certify the fact that you got KP, you know? But also, if KP is like seven feet.
JoeYou gotta make par.
SPEAKER_04Like yeah, well, I mean at least you gotta make par, but but you know what I mean, like I got I played a tournament earlier this year at a par three track actually, and like the longest hole is like a 200 yard, like like a 200 yard shot. And I got KP from like I think I was like seven feet. Like there's like a hundred people in this like seven feet took it, and I was like, how did I yeah? I mean, but I feel like you know, you just never know, right? You never know.
MattOur friend Julian this past Saturday hit it to 11 inches and missed the butt. Did he really got yep? That is the story.
JoeJulian?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that was my first ever, that was my first ever uh KT.
JoeNo, what hole was that? On an eight. He beat me, he beat me and missed it. No, see see you wrote that you what what did you hit? You hit 10 feet, right, Jeremy? Yeah. He did not he did not hit it to 11 inches. I saw this because it wasn't 11 inches, it was like 711. It wasn't it wasn't 11 inches. You got that wrong. So either wrote it down. So I don't think yeah, I don't I really do not believe it was 11 inches. It was probably like 311 or something like that. I was playing, he was in my party, he was in my car.
MattYeah, I know, I know. That's why I was gonna ask you because I sent him a message. I go, how how did you miss 11 inches?
JoeHe goes, bad read. Speaking of, when you get out here, JP, you gotta go to Coyote Springs, man. Coyote Coyote Springs?
SPEAKER_04No.
JoeDude. Like, we gotta get you to Pyu and Coyote Springs.
SPEAKER_04I've played so I've been down to Vegas for for golf once. Where did you play? Uh Golf Sutherland. Um Golf Summerlin? Summerland, yeah, sorry, not Sutherland. Summerland.
MattThat's Highland Falls, Eagle Crest, and Palm Valley. Highland Falls.
JoeYeah, I've got good views out there. Number 13 is good.
SPEAKER_04I played Highland Falls and then where else did I play? Or probably Bally High.
SPEAKER_00No. No, Pain the Desert. Painted Desert.
SPEAKER_04I thought I got I I think I got two rounds in while I was out there. Maybe I just played in one. I don't remember.
MattWell, we just had our we just had our uh league VGN Vegas Golf Network tournament out at Coyote Springs. Um, and then somebody uh last week on Twitter is Austin, it's at Toof Doc 13, T-O-O-F Doc 13. He says, I'm flying in from out of town next weekend for Mitch's Revenge. Maybe a little Mitch's Revenge preview on next week's show. So uh I mean the Mac T-Boxes aren't getting any play.
JoeSo yeah, Mitch's Revenge is so Coyote Springs, since you have never heard of it, it's uh Jack Nicholas, like super pissed off. Like the greens are insane. Um but Mitch's Revenge is this Saturday and they tip it out to what is it like 75?
Matt7800 because the tips are yeah, it's like 77, 76, 77.
SPEAKER_04So they put that. So it'd be like 6800 for like my my climate.
JoeAnd that's that's like up boxes, right? It's like up up. I think the back plays 72, 73. The blacks play 76.
MattThe black blacks play 76. Okay.
JoeYeah, it's it's tough, dude, but it's like the best.
MattIt's probably like 71 Portland area.
SPEAKER_04Okay, okay. That's a I mean, anything close to 7,000 is like sick long.
MattYeah, it but it they put the pins in stupid locations, like on the top of domes.
JoeIt's like Green's keepers revenge, like set it up as well as possible.
SPEAKER_04Well, well, usually wins that tournament.
MattWell, they have a special pool if you break 80. And I think last year, I didn't go last year, so it was the year before some guy had done it, and it was his second year doing it. So I don't know. Didn't two people do it last year? I think so. Two or three. Broke 80? Yeah, broke 80, yeah. Dang. It is ridiculous. It's ridiculous.
JoeBut it is the best $50 you will spend on golf in your life.
SPEAKER_04$50 to play in that. That's just the tournament's $50.
JoeWell, the course typically is $50. The tournament's $80.
SPEAKER_04And it's is that the re so the resident rates, like when I was there, that was kind of one of my one of the reasons why I didn't play more golf, I think, was like the resident rates were stupid good, and then like the rates for out-of-towners was like five times. They get raped. Now that I've got homies down there, I think I would get the resident rates.
JoeWe play Pie Ute for like $60 because our buddy Tom is a member out there, and Pyute for out of towners is $180, I think.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, $180 to $220. That sounds right. I think it was like $220 when I was there.
JoeYeah.
SPEAKER_04Because we went, we went during like well, it was off, it was off season for us, but like peak season for you guys. Yeah, it wasn't as hot, and it was just everything was stupid. It was like th I think Bally High was like $350 or something like that.
JoeBally high is ridiculous for us too now. It's like $150 for us. I'll never spend more than $80 on that place.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I've heard like a lot of mixed reviews about Ballyeye.
JoeLike it's just like it's the same hole over and over and over for the most part. There's some good holes out there though. The outside holes are good, but the middle is redundant.
MattIt's worth checking out for sure. What about Red Rod?
JoeThe private side or the public side?
SPEAKER_04Uh I don't know.
JoeThere's two up there. So one's Arroyo, it's the public side. The um layout, there's no way anyone would ever walk that in their entire life. It's impossible. It's ridiculous. You you get thrown for a loop. Uh, we have not played the private side yet, but it's coming.
SPEAKER_04Sick.
MattYeah, there's only a few, there's only maybe three or four courses in Clark County that you can walk. Yeah. Out of the 60 courses that we have.
SPEAKER_04I was gonna try to play uh because it was still open when I was there, was uh what is it, Royal Lynx?
SPEAKER_00Royal Links. Yeah you can walk Royal Lynx. That's no longer available anymore, though. Yeah, you'll need claw hoppers. Yeah.
MattThe housing track.
JoeSuch a shame, man. That place was sick.
MattYeah, you missed out. Royal Links is that was a fun, fun golf course. Yeah, man. Bummer. Fun, fun golf course. Well, hey man, thanks so much for hopping on with us. We love chatting with with uh different golfers from different parts of the country, and you got a great perspective of what's happening up there in the PW. So we really do appreciate it. Uh we got President's Cup this week. Uh we're counting down the days to Georgia, uh five iron in the league. Man, it's gonna be a good week of golf. Gonna be a good week of golf. Joe, Jeremy, if you guys don't got anything else, uh, we'll let Joe uh wrap it up and take us home.
JoeI just I just want to double check while we got like one of Bandon's ambassadors here because Jeremy. Did uh JP change your mind on going to Bannon for the solstice?
SPEAKER_03I mean he he definitely got me more interested in the courses, but I I almost feel like I want to play him on a separate trip.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03And then do the solstice after. So does that mean Dan is out also? Dan's his own man, but it seems sort of like we're on the same page.
JoeDan's not gonna turn down Bandon. Sounds like a big one. He's maybe not. Yeah. So JP, we got a fourth. So uh if you if you don't want to carry a bag and play, we got a spot if we can get in.
MattOkay. Give everybody your IG handle so they know how to follow you and and check out your stuff.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so on Instagram it is the golf homie, and that's pretty much the only the only spot that you're gonna find me active is is Instagram. So yeah, the golf homie, just at the golf homie.
MattNice.
JoeAll right, Joe. All right, yo, thanks for tuning in to the Chasing Daylight this week. Uh, we appreciate all the listens, all the live followers, viewers. Uh, shout out the golf homie. Thanks for joining us. Uh, as we mentioned before, we're going to Georgia next week. We've got a lot of golf to play, a lot of golf to cover, and uh tell your homies, and uh we'll see you next week. Later, you can see that.
