324: Navigating Vegas Golf: Course Conditions, Equipment Choices, and Wildlife Encounters
Ever witnessed a wild kingdom moment while lining up your putt? We sure have. This week, we share an incredible nature story from Legacy Golf Course, where a roadrunner hunted, caught, and tried to devour a baby rabbit right before our eyes—something none of us had seen in decades of desert golf.
Golf equipment dominates our conversation as we dive into TaylorMade's nostalgic approach with the upcoming R7 Mini Driver release. Unlike competitors who simply shrink their current models, TaylorMade taps into golfers' emotional connections with classic clubs while incorporating modern technology. We explore the ultra-tacky Roo Grips from Grip Master that might transform your short game, proving that sometimes the smallest equipment changes yield the biggest performance improvements.
The eternal golfer's dilemma surfaces: do you haul your beloved clubs across the country for just one round, or face the uncertainty of rental sets? We share horror stories of senior-flex "Walmart specials" and surprising successes with rental clubs that made us question our own equipment choices. Meanwhile, Vegas golf courses face maintenance challenges that remind us how even prestigious facilities like Pinehurst occasionally struggle with conditions—a humbling reality for golfers expecting perfection.
Our tournament talk highlights the upcoming Vegas Golf Network event at Las Vegas National Golf Club (6:30 a.m. start, one spot remaining!) and professional events, including the LPGA at Black Desert Resort and Epson Tour at Spanish Trail, featuring the talents of Dana Fall and Yana Wilson. Whether you're chasing daylight on the course or tracking golf's most significant events, our insider perspective brings you closer to the game we love.

Speaker 1:So, thank you everybody for tuning in on Instagram. Thank you so much for tuning in on YouTube. We are live there as well. And, yeah, thank you to much for tuning in on youtube. We are live there as well. And uh, yeah, thank you to our show sponsors and supporters. You know who you are and we love you for it. Uh, how you guys doing this evening bueno bueno good everybody good I yeah, it's good stupid echo in my.
Speaker 1:It doesn't start until we go live and it's driving me absolutely crazy, so well you've obviously played black rock uh resort, so you should be good, you're living yeah, I, I'm. I'm wearing this for a reason this week they're the lpga is there?
Speaker 1:girls are there, yep yeah, the girls are there charlie hole's up there, gg stall's up there playing uh. And then you know, we also have the Epson tours in town. Right now, dana Fall and Yana Wilson are playing out of Spanish. That starts tomorrow, so good luck to them out there. The PGA tour is in Texas at TPC Craig Ranch, which is hilarious. Anytime I hear Craig Ranch, I just think of the Craig Ranch out on.
Speaker 2:Craig Road. And it's just it'll and it's just it'll. Such a dump, it's such a dump. Thank you, it was a fucking huge dump oh, it was a.
Speaker 1:It was an utter just trash dump place and uh, so, oh, dude, it was.
Speaker 1:It was bad. It was true. Yeah, it was a, but anytime I see craig ranch Ranch, I think of that, and so it's like TPC Craig Ranch. They just don't jive with me. Let's see what else we got going on. Oh, I had a birthday round last week. Thanks everybody for the birthday wishes. Rocky's in the chat, what's up, rocky? I had a birthday round out at Legacy with Jeremy Trey and John Capp. I had a good time out there. Then played national on Thursday with the world famous Chris Torres and a couple of the Tropicana guys and VGN guys, because VJ's, you know he's in both. Let's see. The Grass League is going on in Arizona right now. The qualifier is what they're doing for the team to draft. People are trying to get in. That is taking place. And then Joe, I went over and hung out with Joe while he did whatnot. Yeah, you did. Wow, that is an experience. And I said to him afterwards I'm like, dude, much credit, because you were doing that by yourself. Wow.
Speaker 3:Wow.
Speaker 1:And so for the people that are doing whatnot and are having success and they're a one man show, which it's almost impossible- it's almost impossible. Uh. So that was fun to watch. It was fun to see how the things go on the back side of it and uh, yeah, yeah, it was, yeah, yeah I appreciate your help.
Speaker 3:It was, uh, it's crazy. I mean, there's people constantly asking you for things and it's, oh my god, it's non-stop and I was like I I'll be on the keyboard.
Speaker 1:I got the mod thing, Don't worry about it. I'm like what the fuck's going on?
Speaker 2:I watched a lot of it and it seemed. It seemed a little, a little chaotic at times.
Speaker 1:Oh man, it's not with you, Joe but just like in the comments.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I mean, I mean he it's, it's wild, bro, it's. It really is pretty fucking crazy, but it's, uh, it's a lot of fun. And shout out all the homies that tuned in. Uh, we're gonna try and continue to do it.
Speaker 1:We'll see what happens, but um, hey, rocky real quick, rocky, you said you're headed out to grass league. How come you guys didn't go do the qualifier thing? I thought for sure you would have already in.
Speaker 3:They're already in, oh, they're already not Real quick, rocky.
Speaker 1:You said you're headed out to Grass League. How come you guys didn't go do?
Speaker 3:the qualifier thing I thought for sure you would have. They're already in. They're already in. Oh, they're already in.
Speaker 1:No, not already. Yeah, so if you can't, what's the Grass?
Speaker 2:League thing. What are we talking about here? Oh hear me.
Speaker 3:It's a new, they're a new tournament at the the grass clippings, uh the the lit course in Arizona, where the tournament.
Speaker 1:Yeah, a lot of influencers are out there. It's team golf. Uh, different cities have different teams.
Speaker 2:Yeah, um, and this is part of that influencer league.
Speaker 1:I don't know if it's influencer league. No, we're not. In Valois it should be. It's just a different format of golf.
Speaker 2:That's cool. I want to play grass clippings.
Speaker 3:That looks fun. I really want to play grass clippings.
Speaker 2:I want to go there and check it out.
Speaker 3:Hey, shout out to the Golf Fathers Go check out their Pacific Coast series. I thoroughly enjoyed that series. I thought it was great enjoyed that series.
Speaker 1:I thought it was great. Oh, he's gonna be at the draft tomorrow filming with bev boy nick.
Speaker 1:Okay that makes sense all right, all right, yeah, nice. Yeah, grass clippings look fun, but it's just another format of team golf and, uh, they have a lot of uh like really good play, like uh. Let me bring this up here. I met this gentleman, uh, michael herrera. He's a local, uh, he just moved to vegas. Oh, he's been here a couple years, um, but he's a callaway staffer and he was out at national. Uh, he knows julian and trey and those guys and uh, he, uh is hanging out with him for a little while and we can't even beat trump again to go for the scramble and let's thank you for being honest.
Speaker 1:oh, thank you for being honest, the Rock is a great guy.
Speaker 3:The Golf Fathers are great dudes. Go follow their YouTube. Barely made podcast with that voice, I mean. So I commented on this video earlier.
Speaker 1:He's doing the breaking par from each set of tees. So he did the forward tees on the front nine and I mean, before I knew it I watched the whole thing. I mean it was great content, it was enjoyable. And I sent him a message just before he started and like, hey, you ever want to have a guest on to do that again? That was fun. I would totally do that with you. So we'll see if we can make that happen. But that news just came out earlier today. Go watch it. It's pretty funny.
Speaker 2:Not really funny.
Speaker 1:It's just good. It's good stuff, it's good content.
Speaker 3:It's entertaining, you want to be entertained, you get entertained, that's what it is.
Speaker 1:It's funny because we all know that course very well. I've played so much golf there back when I used to work over in the auto mall.
Speaker 3:It was $25. Now it's $120 or something like that Too much.
Speaker 1:Everything is too much right now, uh, so I love it. You know you can play that course blind.
Speaker 1:It's, it's, it's, uh, it's a fun, fun track, so hopefully I can get out there with him and do that when you get back in town next week rocky, then we'll we'll try and get something going on for that, uh, but oh yeah, so, uh, michael herrera, let me tell you this this dude is a stick, oh my god. Julian told Julian told me he's like just watch his ball flight. Watch his ball flight and it's beautiful. It's absolutely a beautiful thing to watch. He has some of the coolest Callaway gear. He has a AI Smoke 5-wood triple diamond tour and it's got that really deep face on it, dan. It's, oh my god, it's, it's absolutely a thing of beauty. And then he pulled out an all all blue new jailbird with, with no lines, just, oh, so good that I showed him my. We were, we were total nerd now showing different, sharing each other's different clubs and everything.
Speaker 2:So, uh, but he was out well, yeah, told nerd golf geek told her guilty I am too, though it's always cool to see shit that you, you know. The tour guys get you know that normal guys aren't privy to Some of their equipment is just like fuck man. It's so sick.
Speaker 3:Did you see Johnny Wonder today? He said that TaylorMade's releasing the Proto TaylorMade irons. Did you guys see that or no?
Speaker 2:The Roars Protos. Yeah, the Roars Protos.
Speaker 3:And then you know, like I think Scotty plays them, tommy plays them, morikawa plays them and they're gonna release like a a thing. I don't know how many sets or anything, but they're gonna release those like tailor-made blade putters. Uh, and congratulations to uh rory winning the masters, completing grand slam. They're gonna and he he was talking about how he wants to do a video comparing the, the tw? Uh blades to the proto blades and like how there's so many nuances even in the blades that look the same. He wants to like do a video based on the differences the differences.
Speaker 3:So he said he's on a quest to uh do a video by next tuesday nice, yeah, yeah, uh.
Speaker 1:So something I saw on the golf course that I've never seen before. Uh, I've been playing a lot of golf in this desert for a long time, never seen this. So, uh, wednesday morning, we go out, we're playing legacy, and uh, we're on the fourth hole, the downhill par four, and um, uh, jeremy and trey were paying, playing from the tips and john and I were playing up a box and and we're all pretty much in the same area off the tee on that hole, and John and I over in the in the rough, and we see a, a road runner, come running out of a bush with a baby rabbit in his beak. Nice, and I was like Whoa, I didn't.
Speaker 1:I knew they ate, you know, rats and lizards, but rabbit. And so I said, hey, he scared it and and it dropped it. And then the the other, the adult rabbits, came out and were like trying to, you know, fend off, you know, I mean, they got nothing. All they could do is pat them with their paws, you know they really can't do anything and uh, so they, the little baby hops back into the bushes.
Speaker 1:And I was like, wow, that was freaking wild. So, uh, we, you know, the other guys hit. And then john says to me, he goes, dude, he got it. And I'm like what? And we look, and sure enough, he went back in the bush, got it and was running across the fairway with it to the other side and he sets up on the little berm up there and he's taking his head and he's slamming the fucking rabbit into the ground and he killed it.
Speaker 3:It was like holy shit, I've never, never seen a a roadrunner do that before I'm like you used to be my one of my favorite birds, but now you're a little terrorist you're an asshole maybe all courses are laced with game, you know that's like you know, if I was homeless, I would just camp out next to a golf course, and then I you know, it's the bunnies. Yeah, birds, bunnies, yeah exactly, cook them up in like a little garbage, can grill yeah, keep them in the cooler from the, the fairway that the from that's like a nature is metal moment you saw there should have come.
Speaker 2:I was no, I said I go hang on it because trey was talking to me.
Speaker 1:I'm like hang on, a second trey, I'm recording a wild kingdom moment. And I was like oh, trey probably doesn't know what wild kingdom is, but yeah, it was it was wild I've never I mean I've seen.
Speaker 1:I've seen, you know, a rabbit get a full-grown rabbit get taken by a hawk seen that happen at at uh royal links on number seven, when you're going away from the clubhouse, those red-tailed hawks that lived over on those foam poles used to watch them shred rabbits in the fairways all the time. Easy pickings, easy picket. But I've never seen. I've never seen a roadrunner go after a baby rabbit. That's pretty cool.
Speaker 2:That's pretty cool to see that it was wild.
Speaker 1:Legacy. I had to defend Legacy in the Facebook Las Vegas Friends chat because it's here right now.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 1:And I like Legacy. I remember Legacy back in the day when it was gorgeous, and every time I'm out there, that's all I have visions of. But you know they're going through some shit right now and you know I was talking with Trey the golf Trey, not our friend Trey there at Legacy and he told me he's like hey, I'm going to give you a heads up.
Speaker 1:We got some rough patches. You know we've had some water issues, some irrigation issues, so I just want to give you a heads up. I said well, I appreciate that, thank you for telling me that, but look at here, that's Legacy, that's number five, that's the par five.
Speaker 2:That's the irrigation issues.
Speaker 1:Well, this is the good, I'll say. It doesn't look bad. No, and that's the thing you got to take the good with the bad.
Speaker 2:I don't have a bad photo. I didn't take a bad photo Okay. So that doesn't look bad.
Speaker 1:No, and you can see the lines on the green and there's some areas that are absolutely fantastic and there's some areas that are absolutely trashed and unfortunately, unfortunately, most of those areas that are bad are on the greens right now.
Speaker 1:So it's it's, it's tough for them and it sucks because everybody's charging prime race right now because the weather and and they just can't, and I feel bad for them. But you know they they're trying. They're trying really hard. It's not like they don't want the course to be good, and that's the thing. The Las Vegas golf groups and. I was just talking with Robbie Nick a little while ago because apparently Cascada has lost their greens.
Speaker 2:Really, really.
Speaker 1:TBC Vegas has lost their greens and I told him I'm like, yeah, t vegas has lost their greens, uh. But I told him I'm like, yeah, tbc vegas has lost their greens, but palm valley is primo right now it's like go go figure, go out to coyote springs.
Speaker 2:I know it's a drive, but it's maculate out there yeah, they're punching next tuesday too I saw that yeah, yeah
Speaker 1:um national is in great shape.
Speaker 2:Their greens were great and we played in the afternoon.
Speaker 1:I mean we did off at two so they were baked but they were still still rolling, great. And but those Las Vegas golf group and everybody, how are the greens? How are the greens? How are the greens? And it's like, yeah, I get it, you want to be able to putt on nice greens, but yeah, I mean, not every course.
Speaker 3:Not every course is shadow creek and so high, that's what everybody cares about is the greens, and and and and courses need to invest in that area to. I mean, you'll bring people back, you'll get people to book, you'll get people coming back just because of your greens. Nobody really cares about anything else besides the greens. You know, because that's where you score and if it's like bumping, they're like and now it was green, you know it's but it's easy to.
Speaker 1:It's easy to crap on greens, you know, and I it's like I don't know. Yeah, it would be nice if everybody had pristine greens like piute yeah, I mean everybody goes through issues.
Speaker 2:I mean it's it's tough to maintain a golf course. It takes a lot of time and patience and especially a lot of freaking money, and when you have issues, uh, like irrigation issues for instance, it can be two or three days and you've already kind of already in the first process to losing your greens. Yeah, so you know what happens. It happens to the best. Look at pinehurst. They actually shut down this week. They shut down number four. Number four is getting a full green restoration. From what I read. I'm not sure if that's 100% true, but yeah.
Speaker 1:I was like and that's not too long after they did it.
Speaker 2:That's a year out of a major yeah, I mean that's one of the biggest resorts in the country, if not the biggest golf resort in the country, and so you know they got a shit ton of money. So for them to lose greens like that, you know it's like.
Speaker 1:I said shit happens, it happens. And you know, we had a crazy hot spell that came through and then it got cold after that and it's like we haven't had a spring. It's been windy as hell.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I'm wondering how much the wind has dried out a lot of these greens, I wonder if a lot of these courses are having to overwater to try to keep a little moisture in them.
Speaker 1:I know, like I said, we played National, we teed off at 2, and we played like four hours At 6 o'clock. The bunkers were hard as rocks and you know we've played out there in the morning and the bunkers are fantastic, but it was bad. I mean, it was hard, but I mean it's going to happen, you know, and the greens were burned a little bit but they still rolled good. I just feel bad. You know people forget that Legacy shut down for a little while because they you know, somebody bought it was going to try and put houses out there, the same assholes that bought prim. But, um, you know, and when you turn those, those water valves off and there's no water lubricating those seals, and then they dry out and then you turn it back on, it goes south fast. Yeah, it can. So I mean it's a struggle and hats off to the greenskeepers that I was telling people, hey, be lucky, we still have legacy, right? Yeah, there was a time when we didn't Be grateful and you know they're not.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and who's to say that in a year or two it might not be open? I mean, we're losing golf courses quick in Vegas and unfortunately, with the quality of golf courses and the price, the surge in pricing and how popular it is, it's tough to find a tee time and not pay under $100 dollars anymore that's just for local stuff yeah I couldn't imagine paying the out-of-town rates to play some of the quality of some of these courses well, I know what they charged us I know what they charged the locals or the non-locals.
Speaker 1:That went out in front of us and I was like whoo yeah, I would not be happy like yeah, fuck vegas. Yeah exactly it was. We were, uh, we were at dinner, uh, on wednesday. At that night, uh, I took joe's advice and went to um, what was it called? I got the menu here.
Speaker 1:I can't remember what it was called uh, but cleaver, cleaver, yeah, cleaver, yep, yep, yep what it's called uh, cleaver, cleaver, yeah, cleaver, yep, yep, yep, uh went to cleaver and uh, I shared this photo with you guys, not that one, this one, uh, please remove that photo, thank you this one right here uh, this is the menu and they've got the different temperatures you can see here, and the best one is well done, burnt, burnt and pointless.
Speaker 2:Pointless. Seriously they might as well just get medium, well and well done off of there.
Speaker 1:Yeah, my goodness, great piece of meat, great atmosphere had a blast. But across from us, where we were sitting, there was a table of 10 guys. And I look over and I'm like, oh, golfer. I see Titleist hat right, and then I see Masters hat right, and then I see Masters hat and I see Peter Millar polo, and then I see, uh, torrey Pines polo, and then I see, uh, colonial, and I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, oh, golf group. So, uh, erica just landed and she was on her way there. So Brooklyn and I are sitting at the table and we're having some bread, and so I was just, you know, just listening yeah, trying to figure out where they played what was going on where they're from.
Speaker 1:It sounded like they were all from Tennessee and, yeah, they were having a good time.
Speaker 2:Golf trips to.
Speaker 1:Vegas still take place, even with all these insane rates.
Speaker 2:Oh, for sure, For sure.
Speaker 1:Mike BGC said zero rates for tourists under $100.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, yeah speaking of what? Did you see that the tourism rate dropped in Vegas this month?
Speaker 1:yep it's happening?
Speaker 2:Canada, canada, oh, canada is not coming here because they're boycotting the US.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:Oh, jesus Christ.
Speaker 1:There's a significant amount of Canadian tourists that come here that are not coming now.
Speaker 3:Okay, get the Oilers or the Habs or the Maple Leafs, they'll come.
Speaker 2:We'll see you soon. We can do this next round and play Edmonton.
Speaker 1:We'll see how many Canadians come. They will. The people that we've hung out with and seen that were at games that were Canadians they're talking about. We do the 50-50 raffle. They're like oh yeah, this is great. It's so cheap. For me, it's a great way to win money. So, yeah, all right, let's see what do we got next. All right, so we've got a little bit of the Grass League. Oh yeah, so Grass League is going to be on YouTube tomorrow, and then Peacock the final thing thing, or their?
Speaker 2:dollar isn't worth it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, uh, oh, robbie's watching. Hey, robbie, let me talk about you baby. Uh, so it's. Yeah, streaming on peacock. Uh, youtube, you can watch it. And uh, yeah, so do that. Uh, gl Glenn's daughter's playing in it. She's on a team, they have quite a few teams on it and Michael Block's on the team. There's a handful of pros out there, like I said, michael Herrera absolute stick he's playing in it. What are you laughing at, joe?
Speaker 3:Fernando, my homie that I work with.
Speaker 1:He said we don't need money.
Speaker 3:Money is dumb money.
Speaker 1:Money is dumb, money is dumb, all right, uh. So lpga, black desert uh, second chance for black desert to be on tv. Uh, I think we all agree that they did not do the best job when the PGA Tour was there last fall. Didn't really showcase a lot of the holes. No need for that. Oh, my goodness, yes, well, no need for that type of language. We'll get into that in just one second. Let me finish with BlackRock. We'll go back to it. So this is another opportunity for BlackRock to get some eyes on it. Uh, hopefully they have a little bit more coverage, they see a little bit more holes. Uh, I'm looking forward to watching this one. It would be nice, because the lpga always comes on late in the evening, especially being on the west coast event, uh, so maybe get some live holes, uh, instead of the tape delay stuff that we occasionally get shafted on with that. If you're interested in checking out Black Desert, which I highly recommend, go do it.
Speaker 2:Black Desert is amazing.
Speaker 1:It's legit. It should be on TV.
Speaker 3:We got in at the perfect time too.
Speaker 2:It was nice and cheap.
Speaker 1:Nice and cheap and nothing in the trailer for the pro shop free tacos pretty good afterwards.
Speaker 3:I really, really want to play Entrada man.
Speaker 2:I really want to play that, of course take Haiti out there, bro, just do a stand play, do a little boyfriend girlfriend weekend, even though you guys are married. Just drop them off at some, drop the kids off at some ranch.
Speaker 3:Yeah, we could do that. Yeah, do a little boyfriend-girlfriend weekend even though you guys are married, Just drop them off at some, drop the kids off at some random house.
Speaker 2:They'll be fine, it's Utah. Drop them off at some family members.
Speaker 1:You just pull up at a Utah ranch and go hey, watch this for a little while.
Speaker 3:Yeah, Drop them off at Chick-fil-A and they'll be fine, I'm sure.
Speaker 2:Drop. Drop them off at Chick-fil-A and they'll be fine.
Speaker 1:I'm sure drop them off at a fire station.
Speaker 3:We need a break.
Speaker 1:We need a break, oh yeah, so Chris Torres brought this up. No need for that type of language. This was hilarious. You want to talk about first impressions? I have never played golf with Chris. He's come over. I've done some club work for him. Um, we've always chatted about getting out, but it's never worked out well I was the hardest guy to play golf with oh, and he told me he goes. He told me he goes.
Speaker 3:Yeah, we'll get out again, just probably a month, four weeks in advance um and uh, him and uh, is it?
Speaker 1:no, honey kevin and honey kevin and vj they were mccallan fame mccallan and and uh, I was walking me and julian were walking over to the starter shack to let him know that we were leaving and I see a nation logo on a bag and I was like oh, nation said torres would like that. Well, it was his bag. I didn't know. I go around the corner and vj standing at the starter shack and I'm like, hey, what's going on?
Speaker 1:and uh, I turn around and there's chris and I'm like, oh, what's up? And and they were getting ready to go out and I said, uh, how many people you got? And, um, he said there's just three of us. I said I'm gonna join you. You know, uh, julian was gonna get a ride with trey, so I didn't have to drop him off. I said let me go park the car and I'll meet you guys on the first tee.
Speaker 1:So I never played with Chris, never played with Kevin. I see Vijay, he's in the VGN. I haven't played with him in a round. So it was a good time and we were having fun. We were having a blast and Kevin forgot his golf clubs. He opens up his trunk and we were having fun, we were having a blast and, uh, kevin forgot his golf clubs. He, he opens up his trunk and there's no clubs in it. So he had to get a rental set. And if you know, if you know rental sets, they, they're shovels, they're they're super lofted, super strong lofted shovels. And he was smashing the ball, like smashing the ball, but it was going all over the place, right, and the group in front of us, they weren't playing fast, they weren't playing slow, they were just. You know there was a group in front of them as well, and you know we weren't really going anywhere. They were just there they were just there.
Speaker 1:And when we were on the second hole, and when we were on the second hole, somebody playing six hit over the hole through the number seven tee box, through the number three tee box, the par three, and came on the cart path Right On two. Yeah, Jesus. The three tee box.
Speaker 2:You know how the three and seven tee box are side by side.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so they hit over the six green, through the seven tee box, through the two tee box, onto the car path and it rolled down by the ditch and we were like, holy shit, never seen that happen. Oh, but wait we did see it happen again because when Nahani got to that hole, he did the exact same thing oh shit he hits a high fade.
Speaker 1:I won't go as far as saying it's a slice. He hits a high slice and it didn't slice. It went straight through, yelled four and like, landed right next to the dude, like right next to him, bounced through the trees when you know it was right there.
Speaker 1:I was like holy shit, right. And then we get to 10 and it happens again. Well, if you know, on 10, 11 t-box is to the left and back pulled it so yeah, he, it didn't, it didn't fade again and landed over by them and so they're ready. These guys are done, they're done right. And I'm like, oh, my god here we go right but then I remember, I mean, Chris is a big, big motherfucker.
Speaker 1:He you know, he, he packs some, some size with him and uh, we pull in there, I pull up and I was just trying to diffuse the situation, you know, and and they knew who it was and and so I just go up and I'm like, hey, apologize about that. He goes I don't want your fucking apology, just don't do it again If you can't hit the fucking ball straight. Chris goes there's no need for that type of language and it just like it just like made them cower down, it was. It was just like a total diffusing statement, you know. And they were just like okay, yeah, okay, we're out of here. And uh, yeah, it was, it was uh, it was a fun moment. And then, um on, on 16, he, uh, he put one onto eastern and it rushed our traffic and he hit it and it was, it was a no doubter. You know, northbound third lane is where it was headed.
Speaker 1:Yes, and I just turned around and went please sweet, baby jesus, please sweet baby jesus, don't hit a car, don't hit a car, yeah didn't. He didn't hit a car. So we were like and then chris goes, I'm not even teeing up, uh-uh, no, let's just go, I'll drop on the other side. I'm not even, nope. Drop on by the green. Yep, nope, I'm done. It was oh, but he did it on 13-2, the short par four, the little dog leg, one by the water.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, he pulls out driver and, uh, hits it to the bathroom rough day and bj goes. Dude, you've been hitting the three wood, great and and on now. Now you're gonna pull out the driver.
Speaker 3:Speaking of this, like I mean like first impression what situation do you guys consider when you're like I'm gonna bring my clubs or I'm not going to bring my clubs, Like what is the deciding factor? Like I know, I know you played rental clubs in Hawaii, I mean Matt, I mean, was it because you were going to play one round or because I would love my golf clubs through the back alleys of New York. If I'm playing Beth Page, I mean if I'm playing a Rainer, what's the deciding factor for?
Speaker 1:you. I didn't bring them to Hawaii because there's a fee every time you hop islands, and so there was a fee to get them to the main island, then a fee to hop an island, a fee to hop an island back, and then a fee to get them back the main island, then a fee to hop island a fee to hop island back and then so it's money. So money is the issue. I was. I was like I'm not going to pay 300 bucks to haul my clubs when I can rent a set.
Speaker 3:It's money, it's money yeah absolutely.
Speaker 1:That's just. That's a waste of money in my opinion. Yeah, um situation you know like we're going to oahu next month it's almost may so in june um going to one island, and if I, I'm gonna reach out see if I could find a place to play, and if so, I'll bring my clubs I just think it's interesting every time you like, if you're gonna go travel somewhere, it's like that.
Speaker 3:That's like the first question, like where could I play? Uh, who do I know there? What course?
Speaker 1:can I play?
Speaker 3:robbie's got a question yeah, I did, I did. Yes, yeah, I did rob. If you want to know about it, I'll tell you all about it. Um, but, dan, like for you, because, like for me, it's like I will do everything in my power to bring my own clubs and I will lug it with, uh, the stroller and the, the, the, the camper bed and all the kids clothes, and it's like my fingers will hurt, like it's hard not to bring your own clubs. I mean, what's the definer for you, for matt? It's money, of course I'm a snobbish golfer.
Speaker 2:I will refuse.
Speaker 3:I think we all are.
Speaker 2:I refuse to ever buy rental golf clubs. If I were on a trip for two weeks and I was only playing one round of golf club one round of golf I'm bringing my clubs. There's no Now.
Speaker 1:when I went to band the first time I went to band and we were on a road trip where we we went to crater Lake, stayed at Lake Victoria or the lake right above it for a little while, went over to Bandon, stayed the night, I played Bandon and then we went up the coast up to Newport, Lincoln and then back down. I brought my clubs. So I mean that was one round and I lugged them all around nevada, oregon, idaho, washington and california.
Speaker 2:so yeah, I just I think it's dumb to pay 300 bucks yeah, I can understand that if you're doing puddle jumpers and they charge you every time for doing that shit yeah and you weren't playing that much golf, that part I can understand and I would probably I might consider renting, but yeah, if, like I said, if I was only gone for two weeks, I'm only playing one round, I'm taking my clubs almost 99.9 of the times somebody put in the chat that joe's on mute, so he'll take himself off mute because he's not listening to me oh yeah, I.
Speaker 3:I think it's also different if, if you're going to band in, you're going to get you, you probably have the option of good clubs. If you're going to stream song, you got the option of good clubs. If you're going to the middle of nowhere. The one time I ever did rental clubs was in baltimore at the timbers course and it was like a big five set of senior flex wilson's and that gave me a bad taste in my mouth.
Speaker 2:I mean, I wasn't staff.
Speaker 3:I wasn't the greatest player at that time. No, it wasn't even staff. There was no staff on.
Speaker 1:It was just Wilson.
Speaker 3:It was just Wilson. It was probably sponsored by Big Five. It probably had a Big Five logo on it before the staff was on there.
Speaker 2:Don't knock the Wilsons bro.
Speaker 3:No, Wilsons are fantastic. When I started my junior golf career.
Speaker 2:I got a set of bernard langer signature wilson irons no dude wilson's fantastic eight years old like 12 wilson's great everybody's ass in southern california but this was the like.
Speaker 3:It was like the pre-packaged, like buy it in a box, you know kind of, you know, like a walmart, like a walmart yeah, it was like a walmart wilson, it was it wasn't the staff wilson. It's like you know, the one box fits all kind of wilson, you know like. But no it depends where you're going, I think, and you know, if you're playing some little muni in alabama where bob lost his range finder like yeah, rental meadows 100.
Speaker 1:Yeah, the meadows. They're still sending it. I would love to see the meadows still sucking shit. It's still stuck in the mail. It's still sitting in a box behind the counter they haven't, they want it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, they have it underneath the fucking host the coast no dude, they sold.
Speaker 3:Somebody sold that on whatnot already for sure?
Speaker 1:it was a display model only until, like alright, he quit calling, we can sell it now yeah, for sure, but no, I think that's it.
Speaker 3:For me it's like it depends where I'm going. If it's, you know, a little par three course in the middle of uh, alabama, um, I probably won't lug it around, but if it's uh somewhere I want to play.
Speaker 1:That I'm, I played, I played twice in hawaii with with rental sets. I brought my clubs to no. I played with a rental set in maui at Kapalua also. They were Titleist.
Speaker 3:AB2s. I wouldn't do that. I would not do that.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but you got to understand. Then we had five people.
Speaker 2:It was different times.
Speaker 3:Different times.
Speaker 1:Different times.
Speaker 3:Nowadays, you would never do that, though.
Speaker 1:The two other times that I played with rental sets was at Kona and Makai, and I broke 80 both times with rental sets and regular flex rental sets, and that's when you come home and you're like am.
Speaker 3:I playing the wrong, fucking irons. I got to buy that Wilson all in one box from Big Five.
Speaker 1:Walmart in cap. It's just blue light special, but nobody knows what that is it's funny, man uh, blue light specials kmart. We know that well, you do not everybody does.
Speaker 3:I think it's interesting, like the the thought process behind if you're going on a trip, like if you're going to bring your own clubs and and what determines it that's. I was just curious about that. I know all of us probably would, but I'm curious about it that is a good question.
Speaker 1:Anybody, if anybody wants to chime in, what is the point where you go not bringing the clubs? I would, I would be curious. Yeah, let's see. All right, let's see. So, um, let's see ebsen tour. We talked a little bit about that. I don't know whether, I don't even know if they're charging for tickets, but if anybody wants to go out and watch, support uh, the tour out here, um, like I said, dana fall is playing in it and yana wilson, so there's some local blood. There's some snga, former snga players playing in it as well. So, um, you know, if you want to go watch some professionals play golf, it's the the road to the lpga, so they'll be out there and see uh, the pga. Like I said, craig ranch um, robbie, if you're still in there, craig ranch, right, get cringy, or you.
Speaker 1:You probably, you probably love Craig ranch but, Jordan Spieth and Scotty are playing together in the group, so there's there's some some good pairings there. Harry's in the field back in the mainland plan so that there's some good golf going on this week. We got Joe. Are you joining us at Coyote Sunday?
Speaker 3:No, I'm not going to be there at Coyote Sunday. I wish I was. But hey, shout out Stems Golf in the Instagram chat. Go check out stemsgolfcom, especially if you're a Vegas Golf Network member. Go grab that. Rock it in the tournaments.
Speaker 1:Good stuff, just got that new polo.
Speaker 2:Yep dropped two new polos. Those things are sick.
Speaker 3:Yeah, targeted marketing yeah, we just need you to join us for a tournament stems.
Speaker 1:That's what we need yes, uh, you know we, we have 71 players for uh national through through. A little thing out there saying we're looking for three players. Uh had a bunch of bites, a couple of nibbles. Uh hooked one. We got one new player, uh that signed up, that wants to play. So he, he joined and is playing doing grips right now for my spring major tomorrow. Um and uh, peeler, peeler's back.
Speaker 3:Oh, peeler played Pebble. Peeler played Pebble. He must have had a little fire set under him, yeah so he will be.
Speaker 1:He'll be in the tournament. We gotta say we got one more spot left so what division is? He in Peeler. Yeah, he's in spades, he's in spades, so One more spot left. What division is?
Speaker 2:he in.
Speaker 1:Peeler yeah, he's in spades. He's in spades. So I tried to get Rocky. I don't think he's in the chat anymore, but he's still thinking about it. We got one spot to fill for that. So you know somebody, anybody Bueller, anybody somebody. Bueller, bueller somebody want to play national with us. I'm excited for it, I'm super stoked for it, like, oh it's, I love national.
Speaker 3:It's a 630 start too, so it's early. Oh, yeah, that's, yeah, that's 630 am start.
Speaker 1:It's early, oh sure, yeah, that's it 6.30 am start so yeah, yep, it's going to be dewy, hopefully a little chilly, a little dewy, a little chilly Yep.
Speaker 3:It's like you got to bring a quarter zip and take it off at some point. You know like those are the best rounds Quarter zip and shorts. Yep Quarter zip and shorts.
Speaker 1:And you in shorts and you're gonna have to you're gonna have to take that quarter zip off at some point and put some sunscreen on, like, yeah, those are the best rounds. This, this was, this, was the range. Uh, I got so many comments people saying, wait, hold on new range balls at national and you hit off the grass who the hell are you so no, he's a, he's a company man.
Speaker 1:That's what it is those were for the fittings and yes, we get to hit off the grass. We have a section marked off. But yeah, I've been painting lines. Man, that lie, adjustment has been perfect. But yeah, the course is in great shape. Can't wait to be out there again. Probably going to go play a couple more rounds before the tournament, just to get in some more practice. I would love to bring home a trophy for that. I. I would love to bring home a trophy for that.
Speaker 3:I got a national trophy up there, yeah, you do I don't have one yet. Let me see if I can Not national.
Speaker 2:I don't have a national one. Jeremy won last time. I think Beds won the year before that.
Speaker 1:Let me see if I can find the National would be good, get me a third one in a row.
Speaker 2:Let's go.
Speaker 3:Talking that trash. Look how kind of let's go. He's back, he's back.
Speaker 1:Fired up. Let's go. He is back. Let's see if I have this here. Oh yeah, here it is right here I can share it and this is what the template for the trophy is A fabulous Vegas Golf Network major champion. I like it.
Speaker 3:I like it.
Speaker 2:I like it. Just look at it.
Speaker 1:Unfortunately, squid Design is not going to be able to do these for us this year, so I'm trying something else, so hopefully we'll have those in time for june 1st. Tbc vegas coming up really soon. Let's see what else was it. Oh, um, these things right here, these grips no, they the rue grips the rue grips from grip master. I know my golf spy was talking about them. These are the grips that minwoo plays, although the ones he plays are a little different from what I remember, unless they've just worn out completely.
Speaker 3:But holy, holy crap yeah, they're pretty wild, they.
Speaker 1:Yeah, joe yeah, joe was at at. R saw him In pure.
Speaker 3:Hittin' Greens fashion. I just popped out of nowhere, Correct Just popped.
Speaker 2:Just came out of a hole on the golf course.
Speaker 3:It's correct. It's true. I didn't tell him I was coming, I just popped out of nowhere.
Speaker 2:I do got to say, though, those butt caps on those grips are horrible. Yeah, it's a little much. Yeah, that looks.
Speaker 3:It's a little butt cap-y.
Speaker 2:Somebody made that shit in their garage.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it's a little, but you know what? You don't see it when you're holding it. You're right. But wow, you want to talk about sticky. I mean like afterwards your hands, like oh, you feel it, you feel it, yeah it is you got some residue.
Speaker 3:Yeah, so Not like main tarp but you can feel it a little bit. Yeah, little Barry Bonds action Little pine tarp.
Speaker 1:Yeah, super tacky, super, mega, tacky, mega tacky. So I have those on my wedges now and my irons and one on my driver, so uh, full golf, nerd full golf. I really like how stable it is in your hand. I mean no glove either. Fuck a glove, you don't need a glove you don't?
Speaker 1:those are bobby specials I mean, it's you swing the club and if you want to like drop it out of your hand, you like hit a bad shot, it doesn't fall out of your hand. Yeah, um. So yeah, I've gone to that. And then the other big thing that happened um, the the, yeah, I, I put the mg3s back in the bag for a little, yeah, a little bit. Here I saw oh you know what, I can bring that up too, let me show you this and and basically went full golf.
Speaker 3:Nerd, the stat nerd.
Speaker 1:Uh, yeah, stat nerd that I am, uh, look at this right, uh, so this is my man, not so company anymore this is using the clipped app where you track your stats and this is my most uh, the area of my game that needs to improve the most, that can be improved the quickest, if that makes sense. Uh, so this is around the green, but in the rough one year trend and right where that falls off. Uh, that, that's when the Callaways went in the bag. So, yeah, my shot quality was a lot higher in this one segment.
Speaker 3:I'm curious Is it the clubs itself, or is it the way the club looks to you?
Speaker 1:I don't know. I'd be curious. I really liked the MG3s and I never thought I would. I was gonna switch to the callaways. But I really like the way the callaways look. I I like that blackhead, I like the interaction with the ground. But you know, I, I I've had one chip in, one chip in with the calloway and your calloway, your, your tailorlor, mazer like marked up, so they're dashed, they're, they're they're notched a lot um and the one chip in happened at national, so it was, you know, really recent um so, uh, yeah, I gave joe some.
Speaker 2:I gave joe some mg4s. If you want to buy them on whatnot upgrade?
Speaker 3:Go bookmark the show. We're going to try and do it Saturday night. If you need a referral code, you get $15 towards your first purchase Hit me up.
Speaker 1:We need a Whatnot ad Joe Also fellas.
Speaker 2:I don't know if you've seen them or not, but pictures of the MG5s came out. Did you see those a?
Speaker 3:couple days ago. I did not see those. No, I did see those Pretty sexy.
Speaker 2:I didn't see the face. I didn't see face or address. All I saw was the back of the wedge, but it looks good.
Speaker 1:Well, I put the Nippon Modus 105s in the irons. I'm pretty happy with how the irons are feeling right now, especially after the lie adjustment and having that shaft in there. The LAs just weren't kicking for me at the bottom, and so you know I have those LAs in the Callaway's wedges too. So I said, well, you know, I found the 115 Modus Wedgeflex shafts. I said, oh, let's build up the MG3s and see what happens. Geekens, yeah, that was that rabbit hole I dug a couple weeks ago, but I'm pretty happy with how everything is rolling right now. So we shall see. I'm looking forward to Sunday.
Speaker 2:So you don't have any Modus shafts in your Callaway wedges. You're not going to try that to see if maybe that changes.
Speaker 1:It depends on how these go. If I'm seeing some positive things, I may give it a try. I can always just pull one head and swap it out and see I hit my 50 more than anything else, but I'm excited about it. Swap it out and see, you know, because I hit my 50 more than anything else, um, but I, yeah, I'm, I'm excited about it, but we'll see.
Speaker 1:Okay, we, we shall see. I had them at, I didn't play. I played with the callaways at national and then built them up, uh, friday night. So I that I didn't have them. I didn't have the callaways with me at Rio, I just brought a couple wedges.
Speaker 3:Hey, are you guys going to buy the R7 mini driver?
Speaker 2:I have no use for it.
Speaker 1:No desire whatsoever. What's up with?
Speaker 3:the mini driver craze. They're easy to hit. I mean so it started with. Taylormade started bringing this shit out right, and then company the company did it. And then title list. Title has title list driver.
Speaker 2:Yeah, they have a gt. They have a gt mini driver, I know, but I'm talking about like before before recently the current situation um, I think they did in the TSR, I think.
Speaker 1:I don't remember.
Speaker 2:I think I might have sent one to Jeremy. Jeremy would know.
Speaker 3:Jeremy would know I might have sent a picture of a TSR. He's got a big old band-aid on his wrist. Right now he's like the.
Speaker 2:Phantom of the Opera right now. Love you, Jay.
Speaker 3:I love you. Jay, I just think it's so funny like the, the, the trends that happen, like seven wood big trend recently, mini drive so many people big all it takes.
Speaker 2:All it takes is just for one person to like something to hit, start touting it and and all of a sudden be like oh, if it works for him, it's gonna, you know, yeah, gotta work for me, yeah there he is, jeremy.
Speaker 3:I I mean, I do think the r7 mini driver looks pretty sick, though.
Speaker 2:So I was I think I was in love with the r7 quad and so yeah, I'm I'm excited to see what this looks like for sure. Yeah, I'm really curious about it. I don't think I have a spot for it in my bag at all.
Speaker 3:I don't either.
Speaker 1:I definitely want to see it. I could hit the AI Smoke really well off the tee, Like really well off the tee.
Speaker 3:But here's the thing is the Callaway AI Smoke. I'm going to cut you off for once.
Speaker 2:The ai smoke it just looks it looks like a regular ass.
Speaker 3:Ai smoke like fairway wood or driver like, yeah, cal or tailor-made is bringing back classics that people love and it's getting them rejuvenated into buying them. That's why it is happening like the the title is driver is just a mini driver of their current model, but taylormade is bringing back the classics because it's p, it's it's models that people fell in love with back in the day.
Speaker 1:That that burner didn't do so well last year, though.
Speaker 3:Dude, I saw burners, dude all over.
Speaker 2:You know what, though, ricky? I mean not that Ricky's playing great, but Ricky's gaming a burner.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I mean, but Ricky is a driver off the deck kind of guy and that probably fits his bag pretty well. It's like does it fit in your bag decently?
Speaker 2:fits his bag pretty well. It's like does it fit in your bag decently? But I can't. I can't think that the mini drivers and the three woods are much too, are much different for these guys no, I don't think so.
Speaker 3:Not the pros, don't? It's the?
Speaker 2:same. Yeah, I mean it's the same. It's just it's super easy to hit off the t. That's yeah, that thing.
Speaker 1:If you struggle with the driver, it's super easy to hit it off the tee.
Speaker 3:Or if you can't hit a three-wood off the tee.
Speaker 1:You'll be able to hit this off the tee. So I could hit it off the tee to save my life.
Speaker 3:I do think TaylorMade is doing very well. They're bringing back nostalgia with current technology and that's the way to do it. It's not follow the trend.
Speaker 2:That's the way to do it.
Speaker 3:It's not follow the trend, a way to do capitalize on nostalgia.
Speaker 2:That's why these guys are definitely a way to do it. For sure, it's a way to do.
Speaker 1:I don't think it's the way to do it. I it's not the way it's a it's a great release. They're gonna sell a ton of them because that driver was super popular back in the day.
Speaker 3:Oh, it's gonna kill it. It's gonna kill it all it.
Speaker 2:It's going to kill it, all it's going to take is somebody to put a driver, take a driver out of their bag and put the mini driver in and win a major with it. And then all of a sudden, the fucking floodgates are open.
Speaker 3:All you need is a mini driver off the deck like cool little stinger cutter next to the hole.
Speaker 1:Sold. You know know, and everybody's gonna buy it. It's happening in oakmont, yeah, probably good, uh, all right, we got guys, got anything else?
Speaker 2:I think, I think covered everything that I wanted to chat about um the club pga uh professional championship was this week and unfortunately uh, unfortunately uh the friend of the family, kyle mendoza, did not do very well he made the cut. Um, but uh, from what I heard, they had uh, very, uh, very tough wins the last few days and I was watching a little bit of it today yeah, so he missed it.
Speaker 2:But uh, blocky's back in, so yeah, you're gonna see some blocky love. And then the guy who won last time I checked he was up by 10.
Speaker 1:So he just obliterated the field. No, it was a, it was a four, four for one playoff really yeah, four for one playoff. Then it went for for a two for one and it was some guy. He looked like he was in his 60s.
Speaker 2:To win or just to get in?
Speaker 1:To win.
Speaker 2:Oh man, because I saw the leaderboard and maybe I saw it wrong, but they said one guy was at 17 under and the next guy was at seven under. What was the winning score? I?
Speaker 1:don't remember.
Speaker 2:I was just watching the playoff because it was a train wreck. I must have saw something fucked up then, yeah it was a train wreck.
Speaker 1:The older gentleman got kind of a funky swing but he used to be on tour. He's played in like 14 majors. He's been in golf forever and the other guy was a younger guy's first time, uh, getting to play in the in the major. So it was. It was cool how it happened, but yeah, it was it was a shit show.
Speaker 2:I have tyler tyler winning it by 10. Still. That's right, right on the pga website 15, maybe I'm, maybe it's something else.
Speaker 1:what was going on in florida that it was been?
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's what they're doing the PGA Professional Championship. I don't know if you can see it, but yeah, that's the score. First place 15 under. Second place 5 under. Not to play it Maybe not what the hell was I watching earlier today then, Maybe you're watching the seniors or something.
Speaker 1:Maybe that's what it was. No, because it was a young guy.
Speaker 2:You said some 60-year-old guy, dude, he was old. I was like, who is this?
Speaker 1:dude. Who is this dude? Now I'm going to have to go back and look.
Speaker 3:Jermaine Poblano bro.
Speaker 1:It was Jermaine.
Speaker 3:Poblano. He is a killer on the course, jermaine Poblano.
Speaker 1:Jeremy got a notification that his photo was shared. The IG chat now.
Speaker 2:Yeah, what's up, Jack?
Speaker 1:Well damn it. Now I've got to figure out what the hell that was yeah.
Speaker 2:I'm curious to see what kind of playoff you were looking at.
Speaker 1:Maybe it was some old shit, because they were. I know you were saying they had weather issues.
Speaker 2:It was on Golf Channel earlier today. Yeah. It looked like Florida 4th at 4 under Tied for 3rd.
Speaker 1:I'd figure out what the hell I was watching.
Speaker 2:It is what it is.
Speaker 1:Yep. Well, Joe, if we ain't got nothing else, you want to wrap this bitch up and we'll get out of here.
Speaker 3:Yeah, thanks for tuning in to another Saturday Night.
Speaker 2:Joe's Garage.
Speaker 3:What not shop let's go Sunday, sunday, sunday.
Speaker 2:You better be there, man. I wish I could be consistent man.
Speaker 3:I've been in the trenches and the depths of whatnot shout out uh, thrifty, right here, bangers only. Uh, man, I've been in the depths, so uh, yeah, it's fucking crazy what an app.
Speaker 1:I was buying knives last night, um they're dope, though dan says that those are funky-looking golf clubs.
Speaker 3:Well, I was trying to ask him. I was like dude, you can make those into divot tools. Do you manufacture those? Do you make those? I would buy divot tools from you that are based on that and it's just like whatnot is a crazy app. If you want to join bookmark the next show, 310 is back. He's making stuff again, he had a meteorite divot tool.
Speaker 1:Oh really, wow, that's great.
Speaker 3:I still use the 310 divot tool that you gave me back in the day. It's made out of kryptonite. You can get it live on whatnot no, I'm kidding Whatnot Saturday nights live from Joe's garage. Yeah, it's crazy, man, it's so much fun. Anyway, thanks for tuning in to this week's episode of the Chasing Daylight Podcast. We are here every single week, typically on Tuesdays.
