Matt’s Knee Surgery Prep And Anesthesia

What a what uh what a crazy experience. Um that was uh we we had to get up. I'll give everybody a little play-by-play. You know, we had to we had to get up five o'clock. Uh, you know, we did the podcast the night before, and I had it all edited and done. And then yeah, try to try to go to sleep easily, knowing you got to get up at five in the morning, get your leg chopped up. Yeah, it was uh a restless night, so to speak. Uh, but we got we got to the surgical center, got checked in, and man, it's wild. Like when I went in for the meniscus surgery, the anesthesiologist came in and was like, What's up? I'm the one that's gonna be knocking you out later, you know, and uh they're like uh take your sweats off, uh hop in the chair, let's go, and done, you know, in and out. This was like surgery, you know. I was like doing iodine scrubs, and you know, they're shaving my leg and they're doing these. I we had these giant like I'd say napkins, but they're they were like almost a quarter inch thick, and like you had to rub your whole body with those and like all over in three times, and and uh the prep the prep was a little bit more intense, and then the anesthesiologist came in and I saw him more than anybody else. I mean, he hung out for 15-20 minutes talking about everything, going over my medical history, asking any questions, and I mean it was really nice, you know. And he broke down exactly what was gonna be happening. I got a spinal spinal tap uh they put in, and I also got two blockers. So uh it was it there was no no didn't feel the damn thing, you know, and uh that sounds awful.

But then coming out of it, I hate it, I hate it. This yeah, worse nightmare.

The coming out of it was weird because you're so numb and you can't do anything. And and you know, I had to get an x-ray, got the x-ray done, and then uh laying down in the bed for a couple hours, and and um they said, you know, we're gonna make sure you're cognitive and everything, and then you have to you have to pee before we can let you leave. And uh pee?

Yeah, oh yeah, they gotta make sure that before you get a new knee, you gotta pee.

Recovery Room Chaos And The Legendary Pee Test

Matt 5:02

Before they'll let you out of the out of the surgical center, you gotta make sure that you can use the best, use the restroom. Oh shit. Well, it's because you know it's everything's numb down there, and and uh so new knee gotta pee. New knee gotta pee. And the guy next to me, he had the same thing done, but his right knee. And so he was an older gentleman from New York, he was hilarious, he was so impatient. Like, like, I I didn't know this was gonna take this long. I thought I was gonna be out of here already. Uh, what's taking so long? And it's just like, well, you have to pee. He's like, Well, I don't have to pee. And she goes, Well, until you pee, he's like, Well, let's just go try. And so he comes back, he's like, Fuck, I didn't I need to talk to chugging water because I can't even feel my dick, they want me to piss.

Oh wow, that's interesting.

And yeah, that's awesome. And so he was a little upset and hostile. The nurses are coming up to me, and she's like, Are you okay? And I'm like, He's like, Can I get you coffee? I'm like, Yeah, bring me coffee. The coffee was fucking great, by the way. And uh, so she goes, You just let me know when you need to go. And I'm like, All right, yeah, no problem. And uh, so it was like two, two and a half hours, right? And he was getting like irate, like, I need to get out of here, this is ridiculous. Blah blah blah.

Was he drinking coffee or no?

Oh, yeah, he was drinking coffee, water, you know, and they're like, No, they can they can do a uh diuretics in there, a catheter, and his buddy's like, You're not doing a catheter just to get out of here. He goes, No way, and I'm like, I will wait. I'm good. I don't have any problems peeing.

So uh the Olympics are on. We can we can watch TV all night.

I'm I'm good, I'm good. Uh and so then we're sitting there and and he's being grumpy, and his name was uh Joe. Yeah, how funny is that? His name was Joe. Hey, and uh I'm I'm sitting there and I take a sip of coffee and I'm like, why is my hand wet? I look down and I had pissed all over myself. And so I said, Hey Joe, I don't want I don't mean to rub this in. I said, I know you can't go, but I just pissed all over myself. He's like, Fuck you, Matt. That's funny. Um yeah, so then I got up to go to the bathroom.

No, uh, I get up to go to the bathroom, crazy lightheaded, crazy, you know, losing my balance. So, like, nope, back down, stay back down. So they gave me something for the nausea. I get up, uh so we waited about another man. Yeah, wait another 20 minutes, go back in, go to the bathroom, and then I'm sitting on the toilet, I'm just like pouring sweat, get crazy lightheaded. And she's like, Okay, let's go, let's go sit you back down, you know. And uh, so then they she goes, I can give you uh a pain pill because I she goes, I'm sure you're probably starting to feel it now. And I'm like, Yeah, she's okay. She goes, but I can't let you go for another half hour. I'm like, I don't I don't care, I'm good. You know, I just don't want to feel pain. So uh that's great. Oh yeah, yeah, cool.

Yeah, well they they pumps they pump you with so much fluids with the IVs while you're out, you know, and so now I got I got this thing that I I can't I got this leg that I can't even use nor feel, but I have to go to the bathroom like every 10 minutes, and it was uh that was the first the first 48 hours was was wild, wild. But you know, it's moving right along, up and moving around. I can walk without the walker now. I I mean I'm still using it just for safety because I don't want to you know flip or something and and catch a crack or something and and tumble.

Once the pain meds wear off, it's it's it's strenuous, it's yeah, it's not nice.

How many how many golf stickers do you have on your uh your thing?

No, I don't I I didn't put any on it because I don't I my goal was not to have it long. My goal was I didn't want to waste the stickers because I I don't plan to have that thing long. So we we'll see. I got my precision pro speaker on it.

Uh and uh I saw that upgrade. Nice upgrade.

Yeah, nice little upgrade. But I I they have me in this CPM machine that it it bends your leg, it bends your leg for you while you're laying down. And I tried it on the recliner, didn't work on the recliner, so it's in the bed. But you know, you your muscles don't work in your leg, you know. You you think normal, hey, I'll just pick my leg up and put it in that device. No, it it doesn't work. Your muscles don't work. Like, uh-uh, we're not participating yet. Uh we are up, so no. So I've learned to you know hook the bottom of my left leg with my right foot and then lift my right leg to lift my left leg. Uh, so we've been doing that to get in and out of things. Um, no problem getting inside the car. Uh, but uh what's the thing? What did he say?

First 48 Hours: Numb Legs And Nausea

You I'd like to file a complaint about some comments Joe has made to me. Not a very good look for chasing daylight podcasts. Oh my goodness, Joe. What is wrong with you?

So yeah, that's true. Yeah, I mean the the complaint box is in the is in the uh premium now. Yeah, it's the complaint box is in the lady's phone number you can call exactly.

Exactly. Yeah, so that that CPM machine is crazy because I have to I started at 50 degrees and this was on Thursday. I didn't do it Wednesday, I started on Thursday, and um I have to go six degrees every day, I have to do it for four hours a day, and then it goes up six degrees the next day, do it for four hours next day. It goes up six degrees, six degrees. So I'm up to 80 degrees, and uh tomorrow will be 88, and uh you know the goal is to get to 120, but uh I definitely feel it's working. Definitely feel it's working.

Joe's just going on. When will you go to the actual like physical therapy? Or have you done it? I've already gone, yeah.

I went Friday, I went Friday after the surgery, and I went uh Monday, and then I go Wednesday, Friday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Hopefully, three weeks, then I'll be I'll be good to go. But to that first day of physical therapy, I felt like such a pus. I'm like, she's like, okay, I want you to, you know, we're gonna have you lift your leg up off the table and you're laying flat and just straight leg lift. And I'm like, that's not happening. I I appreciate you, but that's not happening. And she goes, Okay, well, I'm gonna give you the strap to put around, and then you can pull it up and that'll help lift it. And I'm like, nope, that's that's not happening. And then they gave me some things to do at home. It's like sit at a table and and take your ankle and and drag it underneath the the chair. And I'm like, I I can't bend this thing 90 degrees yet. How am I supposed to do that? Uh, but there was some that was uh that was a day that I was like kind of embarrassed that I was there, and then yesterday I was able to do all the exercises plus and uh you know I they tell me hey, do 10 do 15 of these. I'm doing 20. All right, do 20 of these, I'm doing 30.

CPM Machine, Ice Compression, And Pain Meds

You know, just I'm I'm pushing hard just because fix your ball mark, fix two, fix two, exactly. Yep, there you go, right there, right there.

And the other the other cool thing is the ice machine that I have, that it's a it's a knee brace that's hooked up to some tubes, uh, it's air tube and a water tube, and so it goes to a tank that has ice blocks in it, and the water gets down to like 50, 45, 50 degrees, and so then it pumps water into the knee brace and then it compresses, so compresses, releases, you got you got some high-tech stuff.

Oh, it's uh right, right? Yeah, yeah. So and then they gave me this portable one that I have on right now.

So can you believe you'll be swinging a golf club in three months?

Uh, I grabbed my putter the other day and was just like holding it. My mom goes, put that down. I'm like, hey, just I'm not doing anything. Uh yeah, I I I'm excited. I I'm my biggest thing, and I was talking to Mike about this. Shout out beautiful golf courses. My my biggest thing that I'm looking forward to is not being in pain going to bed. That is like my biggest thing that I am like excited about. I've been talking to Mike about my sleep scores and my stress levels at sleep and everything. And I told him, you know, hey, on the on the pain meds, um, it's it's not as you know, I have a lot less stress level. And he's like, Well, yeah, it's pain meds, it's taking it all away. You don't have that pain that you're feeling. So let's let's get the knee working back to normal and off the pain meds, and then we'll see what your sleep scores are like. I think, yeah, that makes sense.

So they gave me a muscle relaxer, which is amazing. I have some nerve, like some stuff to re to help regenerate the nerve endings, and then the pain pills. So I have found out if you take the pain pills and the muscle relaxers really close together, yeah, high as fuck.

You're still I was watching TV last night. I'm sitting up and I was telling Emma this earlier. I said, I was sitting there and and I was like falling asleep and not asleep, you know, and I hate that. I either want to be passed out or wide awake. I don't want to be in that you know, that middle zone where you're half awake, half asleep. Yeah, and so I sat I sat up a little bit and I looked at the TV and and the TV just kind of started this small and went super big. And I was like, whoa, okay.

Physical Therapy Humbling Start And Progress

It's I was telling you guys this earlier. It's I it's because Mike sent me two books, two two great golf books that I didn't have, right? And he he also sent me a grabber to pick up up off the ground. What a funny guy. And and a coffee cup that says at least you don't have to wear a dog cone. Um so I I wanted to read the books, but I I can't focus. I I just I can't focus. I like I'm reading a page, and then all of a sudden I'm thinking about you know bowling at the show boat when I was 18. It's like what what am I doing? You know, it's just it's really hard to concentrate. Same thing with TV shows because I had so many TV shows that I wanted to watch, but I just I can't get into anything. The only thing, the only thing that makes me happy while I'm on these pain beds is watching people crash in the Olympics and bare knuckle riding, watching people beat the crap out of each other bare knuckle is like brings me joy.

Yeah, I was on those after ankle surgery and can definitely see how people get a dick. Yeah, I mean the the thing I'm happy about right now is is I'm only you know, because they gave me an they gave me enough for a while, and you know, I could take them. Mike says, Hey, don't care what it says on the the thing, he goes, Don't abuse them. But you know, if you for every four to five hours is okay for pain because you're post surgery that you know once you get weeks, two weeks out, then it's different. Um, but no, I'm just taking one a day right now.

So that's the thing. I mean, you're like, oh it yeah, it hurts a little now. I'll take another, you know. That's the whole thing. It's like, yeah, can you can you deal with it?

So something took place over the weekend, and uh, I think the only P the only reason people knew about it is because people were talking about it that weren't watching it, and so it got some traction. Uh, but Anthony Kim played a phenomenal back nine out in Adelaine, whatever it's called. Is that what it's called? Adelaine.

And uh beat John Rom, Bryson D. Chambeau, and it was it was awesome. It it was awesome to see. Super cool. I love a good story. I you know, and I said this, I posted this on Instagram. Not a live fan by any means whatsoever. And uh, I thought there was a lot of hype and a lot of just hey, let's get us some eyes on us by bringing in Anthony Kim. But uh dude has grinded, stepped it up. He's all about family, um, just has uh a new mission in his life, and it's awesome to see. It was awesome to see him play some amazing golf. He putted like a legend. Legend. I mean, I couldn't believe some of the putts he was draining, and uh it was awesome to see. But and there's a very big butt. This is not this is not the greatest comeback story in the history of golf. It's not, it's far from it. It's a phenomenal story, and I am super excited for his and I hope he can jump on this and play better and win a shit ton of money. I I'm all for that for him, but it's not the greatest comeback story in golf, it's a good comeback story.

That is so those irons are one of Juju's closest friends, the guy that actually got him into golf. And he has had those irons. If anybody knows, they're they're old, but he hits them so damn good. And he's one of those guys that hits the same spot on the face every single time. And he had some older uh drivers that didn't see better numbers with the new stuff because he hits it in the middle every single time, and it's like, you know, why upgrade? You know, why spend$700 on a new driver when your driver you're getting everything out of it? And so, yeah, he didn't even give you irons. Juju just rebuilt those for him. So that was that was crazy.
